Marian’s Story Marian Vaatveit had a more than seven decade relationship with the Iowa Health – Des Moines family, dating back to her sister Virginia Thompson’s work as an anesthesiologist at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in 1940. Over the years, Marian regularly attended the Star Donor Event, the Principal Charity Classic, and other events sponsored by the Iowa Health Foundation. Nearly three decades ago, Marian Vaatveit decided Blank Children’s Hospital and Iowa Health Foundation would receive a substantial bequest from her estate. Marian offered some suggestions on how her gift could be used, but left the ultimate decision up to hospital leaders. Marian’s bequest to Blank Children’s Hospital will be in excess of $1 million. Throughout her years in supporting the programs and services of Blank Children’s Hospital, one thing was clear: Marian loved children. And that love will live on as her gift will provide a full third of the funding for the establishment of the new Developmental Center. Currently, there is no center in Iowa that provides coordinated and comprehensive services for families affected by developmental or behavioral disability such as autism, muscular dystrophy, traumatic injury or cerebral palsy. Marian’s bequest will help change that. Marian’s friends and family are thrilled that Marian’s bequest is going to have such an immediate impact on the health of children. She was an elementary school teacher and remained involved as a school volunteer after retirement. Marian’s lifelong love of children will continue forever through the new developmental center. Marian’s gift is not only her personal legacy, it is an inspiration to others in how their own giving could make a difference in the lives of children. Each gift to Blank Children’s Hospital is a blessing that speaks to the impact our providers and staff members have on patients and families in need. From the Blank family’s initial gift that helped establish the hospital, to the donations we receive on a daily basis, we are humbled to be seen as worthy of charitable support.

Special thanks to our employee donors for jumping “All Aboard” in 2010! 30 3
