Am I right in thinking St Andrew Square Garden is back this year? You sure are. This year the festivities will start even earlier too as the square plays host to the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, from 17 to 26 July. The Hard Rock Café will also have a three day music festival, from 30 July to 01 August, before the site officially opens for the Fringe on 04 August. Delighted to hear that. Will it be a similar set up to last year? Pretty much, with some minor twists; a bit more decking, and a bit more shelter from the rain. Local brewers and distillers Innis & Gunn and Edinburgh Gin will also be making their mark. It’s still free entry to the square and kids with their folks are allowed in. After dark it gets a bit more adult oriented with things winding down around midnight once the last show goes in. So what should I expect to see? Loads of stuff; kids’ shows, cabaret, theatre, music, a bit of magic, comedy… All kinds of everything really. St Andrew
Square Garden will be open for business from 10am with shows running from 11am – 2am daily in the Spiegeltent and Stand in the Square. What about some highlights? Have you got any insider top tips? David Bates of the Spiegeltent always finds the most amazing shows to put in his Spiegeltent, this year La Clique present Velvet, a sell-out five star show straight from the Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe with rave reviews. There is also a plethora of updated Shakespeare productions and past favourites such as Sunshine on Leith. The Stand Comedy Club is back with its Mongolian yurt, Stand in the Square, and they have Brendon Burns and Colt Cabana, comedy compilation Funny for a Grrrl and Michelle McManus. er public profile hasn’t been extensive since the low-key release of her self-titled debut album at the turn of the year, but the weight of critical adoration behind Ohio born, Virginia raised, Nashville forged singer-songwriter Natalie Prass is surely enough to ensure that she doesn’t remain unheard of for long. With the album given a full UK release last month and the singer touring the country in late June, her reputation will hopefully escalate in these parts as more come to see her perform and hear her wonderful music.
The 28-year-old is possessed of a wonderful voice, for starters, a dusky mix of hope and sadness which blends rich country vowels with a wide reaching indie songwriter’s aesthetic which takes in ethereal balladry, hints of a big band influence to some of her compositions and a gorgeous strain of recreated ‘70s metropolitan pop running throughout. While the style is often different, there are hints of Hall & Oates to her expansive, jazz ‘n’ strings compositions, and of Carly Simon in her distinctly Stateside twang.

THE FACT IT’S ALREADY BEEN TIPPED AS AN ALBUM OF THE YEAR IS NO SURPRISE TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY FALLEN FOR IT HARD
As with all new artists who spring out of nowhere, Prass has been paddling away under the surface all her adult life. She attended Berklee College of Music after leaving Virginia, and was in the backing band of alternative indie star Jenny Lewis for a time, before moving to Nashville and immersing herself in the city’s highly competitive scene. She has recalled it was a time which tested and honed her ability greatly, although after a few years without success she was ready to give up on music for a career knitting sweaters for dogs (the company was already up and running; it was called Analog Dog) when a chance reintroduction to an old school friend changed her fortunes. Matthew E White had already proven to be a huge critical success in 2012 with the release of his debut album Big Inner (the follow-up Fresh Blood came earlier this year), and the Spacebomb studio, label and house band he’d set up in Virginia wasn’t just intended for his own use. When he and Prass were put back in touch through a mutual friend, he and the Spacebomb crew came to work their magic on her first album. It’s a striking if reserved listen, from the mournful country groove of My Baby Don’t Understand Me and Why Don’t You Believe In Me to the dramatic orchestration of Christy and the swooning old Hollywood strings of It Is You. The fact it’s already been tipped as an album of the year is no surprise to those who have already fallen for it hard. Natalie Prass plays Mono, Glasgow, on Monday 22 June 2015.

Whether you’re partial to a thriller, rom-com, animation or action movie, this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival is rolling out the red carpet and bringing some of the hottest films to the big screen. Here we give you the lowdown on some of this year’s highlights. Opening Night Film Kicking off in style on Wednesday 17 June, the festival Opening Night Gala brings the much anticipated World Premiere of Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut, The Legend of Barney Thomson, to the capital. The Glasgow-set thriller puts Scottish favourite Carlyle in the title role as hapless barber Barney, whose descent into serial murderer makes this a wonderfully absurd and macabre comedy. Carlyle is joined by an unrecognisable (and hilarious) Emma Thompson. Family Gala and FilmFest Junior Not just for the kids, tickets will sell fast for the UK premiere of Disney Pixar’s latest animation Inside Out on Sunday 21 June, 2pm at the Festival Theatre. From the creators behind Up and Monsters, Inc., this fun and colourful animation follows the five
emotions living inside a teenage girl’s mind, with a voice cast including comedy titans Amy Poehler and Bill Hader. Ewan McGregor Returning to the festival for the UK premiere of Rodrigo García’s Last Days in the Desert, an intimate look at Christ’s 40 day pilgrimage across the sandy plains, Ewan McGregor, who plays both Jesus and the Devil, is set to captivate fans in this formidable role. He’ll be in town discussing his stellar career in EIFF’s live ‘In Person’ conversation on Sunday 21 June at the Royal Lyceum Theatre. At just 22 years old, the Hawick-born rugby international has already racked up 31 Scotland caps and was the youngest player on the 2013 British & Irish Lions tour of Australia. Now signed to the Glasgow Warriors we find out what he gets up to when visiting Edinburgh. What gives Edinburgh its edge? I love the architecture, the castle and it’s where Murrayfield is. What’s your favourite area? Stockbridge for the great coffee shops, restaurants and houses, I’d like to live on Anne Street. Hamilton’s is great for lunch with friends too. If you could change anything about Edinburgh what would it be? The weather, every time I’m in Edinburgh it rains… and I live in Glasgow. The shop you’ll always find me in: Laing Edinburgh. I’m a massive watch fan; I always get great advice and service there too. Your earliest memory of Edinburgh? Coming to watch Scotland games at Murrayfield when I was wee. You get the best views of the city from the stadium too. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Patisserie Valerie on George IV Bridge then a walk along Princes St and George St, coffee in hand. Describe a great night out in Edinburgh? My best nights out are on George St. The VIP areas tend to be busier than the normal part of the clubs though.

Gordon J Millar’s war cry to celebrate all that’s great about fashion and creativity in Scotland has been heard around the world. The Scot Street Style founder has just returned from flying the SSS banner at New York’s Tartan Week, was awarded Best Fashion Twitterati by the Herald and launched his first style annual, #ONWARD. All of this whilst practising as a full-time nurse. I’d describe my style as… urban gentleman, revelling in the barbershop renaissance, and dabbling through the centuries to express my individuality with panache. It’s important to express yourself, share your passion and define your own style. My favourite place to shop in Edinburgh is… the boutiques of Thistle Street, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield and the Grassmarket, they exude a unique Edinburgh energy and style. What drew you to a collaboration with Harvey Nichols? I’ve loved it since I was a young girl, it’s such a glamorous department store that you can spend all day in. It’s been such an honour to have my book there, so exciting. When you’re enjoying a day out, how do you like to refuel? I love to do yoga and get into nature by walking in Richmond Park, London, trying new places to eat out for every meal and watching movies in my pyjamas. Do you have a favourite of the featured recipes? The Thai beef. What are some easy improvements to make so we can all ‘get the glow’? Eat wholefoods, stress less, cut out processed foods, eat healthy fats and love your body. Swap white sugar for coconut sugar, white bread for rye bread, margarine for coconut oil and pasta for courgetti.

You can’t seem to walk a hundred paces without stumbling over art installations. Traversing the bounty of pop-up galleries is like a game of art scene whack-a-mole, craft events are filling every spare nook and cranny of public space and pop-up kitchens are turning up at the drop of a hat.
C
ounterculture and grass-roots arts have always been Glasgow’s thing. They’ve always been Edinburgh’s hipster sibling, brimming with rakish goings-on while the traditional capital glances over the Lothians with fraternal disapproval, secretly wishing it was part of the fun. The west coast has known it since the ‘80s when they launched the slightly smug but incredibly successful Glasgow’s Miles Better campaign. Historically there’s always been a connection between centres of industry and creative output, often realised by uninspired workforces looking for escapism. But, in Glasgow’s respect, much of that commerce has long-since moved abroad so what is it that makes Scotland’s second city first in all things culture. Correlation and causation may be inextricably linked here; as Glasgow’s industrial era came to an end the abundance of disused space became hives of creative activity with community arts hubs turning Glasgow into an artistic melting pot and cultural breeding ground. Could it be that the congruous new creative spaces appearing around Edinburgh are having the same effect;

the benefits rippling throughout the city? Like Glasgow, the beating heart of Edinburgh’s scene is pulsing from the commercial spaces remnant from industry particularly around Leith, dusty whisky bonds repurposed into bustling studios and galleries. In an effort to catalogue exactly what’s going on in the area, a cultural mapping research project entitled Leith Creative has been looking at resources and businesses. The council-endorsed report identified an urgent requirement for more studio spaces with the current hubs oversubscribed and trying to manage ever-growing waiting lists. By way of illustrating the growth; half of those surveyed considered themselves ‘emerging’ or ‘starting out’. The report noted “Leith’s growing reputation as a burgeoning cultural centre is undermined by the fact that there is not a dedicated multi-arts space in the area. The introduction of a venue would provide a much-needed focus
for cultural activity in Leith.” Those with an ear to the ground may have heard rumblings about a new venue called The Biscuit Factory and by all accounts, it may just fit the bill. Formerly owned by Crawford’s Biscuits, the warehouse on Anderson Place has lain empty for eight years before its recent resurrection by the Youth Heart Juice agency. Their ongoing investment will cover a full development over the following year with lofty plans that include a gallery, exhibition space, cafe, theatre, 30 studios and a rooftop garden, courtesy of newly appointed listed building specialist architects, Konishi Gaffney. The building’s studios are already at full capacity with a who’s who of the nation’s top-flight artists, photographers, fashion designers and organisations. And although not officially launching until the end of August, the uninterrupted warehouse expanses are in daily use for photo shoots, filming and creative meetings with a brimming events

calendar to boot. You’ll find Gordon from Scot Street Style (featured in i-on style this month) running his legendary annual shindig, The Gathering, on 04 July. In a recent Consumers of Culture survey; residents of EH6 and EH7 ranked third and fourth respectively in the whole of Scotland. Perhaps that’s why LeithLate’s annual one day programme has swollen to a massive four month affair this year. For those who don’t know; it was LeithLate that spearheaded the eminently popular Shutter and Mural Projects, with previous year’s works continuing to dandify otherwise baron and boarded-up premises around Leith and The Shore. LeithLate15 is already underway and will run until September; encompassing a whole host of arts events including art openings, gigs, open studio events, tours, screenings and a number of new permanent and semipermanent public exhibits springing up in the area. Other events include a 10th birthday celebration of Elvis

Shakespeare (the renowned second-hand book and record mecca), mural tours guided by the responsible artists and open studio exhibitions spanning a multitude of venues. The Shutter Project also continues unabated throughout the festival with the installation of three new commissioned artworks around Great Junction Street from a number of celebrated artists. Over at Meadowbank a nine-storey council building which had been slated for demolition was given a brighter outlook by the team behind Edinburgh Palette. The last of the government’s pension administrators moved out of St.Margaret’s House in 2003, fast forward to 2015 and the imposing shoe box exterior is the unlikely home to a thriving community of 200 fully subscribed studios, busy galleries, businesses and workshops. Aside from providing low cost studio space, the organisation is launching a new Arts Community Project.

Funded entirely by Edinburgh Palette, the project’s goals are to showcase and support emerging talent with commissions and exhibitions. Further support comes in the form of their art studio bursary program. As a career starting-block for select graduates of the ECA and Gray’s in Aberdeen, students are rewarded with a fully-supported free studio for 11 months after graduation. Notably, the Edinburgh Palette venture runs as a registered independent charity; completely free from external funding. The similarly community spirited team behind Full Cirqle were green-lit to expand their operation to a commercial space in Baileyfield industrial estate following a successful crowdfunding campaign. Transforming a drab business unit into a fully-fledged centre for the circus arts; the venue offers 24 hour access to members with all of the facilities to hone skills in disciplines such as aerial silks, trapeze, juggling and uni-cycling. Non-members can get booked in for classes teaching parkour, pilates, yoga, cross-training and, of course, professional circus training. Hot-desking creative companies can also take advantage of what has to be the most unique office views in the country. Floor-to-
ceiling glass walls onto the main hall area mean a day at the office would certainly never be dull. Unless you’re a sculptor or Newhaven resident; the building of the new £3m purpose-built Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop may have escaped you. Hidden behind Lindsay Road, you’d be forgiven for missing the two-part building designed by Sutherland Hussey Architects; home to the Bill Scott Sculpture Centre and the freshly completed Creative Laboratories with its commanding multi-purpose tower. Artists are supported in their careers and practice, not only through the provision of space and professional facilities but via funding, education and professional opportunities. Like the rest of the hubs mentioned, an environment of peer networking and community is fostered, paramount to the operation and a probable factor in the wave of optimism surrounding Edinburgh’s arts scene. W
hen my dad told me that he had just collected his watch from its service, I looked at him with a blank expression. ‘A service?’ He explained the importance of such service to me and my attention turned to my own timepiece; my beloved Breitling which hadn’t seen the inside of a jewellers for the best part of 10 years. My watch was gradually losing time, an indication that a check was overdue. I booked a consultation with the service manager at Laing Edinburgh prior to any work being carried out. She explained the complexity of servicing a mechanical watch and what to expect once it has been inspected. My watch would remain in their state-of-the-art servicing facility for at least the next four weeks in the hands of Walwyn Fletchman MBHI, Laing's watchmaker. Walwyn compares a watch mechanism to a small engine with hundreds of tiny parts. Some parts move constantly, some are load bearing and are subject to a huge amount of force. Being constructed from finest and strongest materials enables the components to withstand such pressures. He tells me seals can deteriorate and dust and moisture can get into the mechanism; moving from environments of different temperature can cause condensation which
in turn causes corrosion. Dust and moisture can enter the crown and result in rusty wheels and pivots leading to failure of the watch. During the service, the watch is stripped down and parts are checked, tested and cleaned over a number of days. Components may need replaced which are ordered direct from the manufacturer. The case and bracelet are refurbished before reassembly and extensive testing. During reassembly, many different oils and greases are used. Once the timepiece is put together, it undergoes pressure testing to check seals, hot and cold testing, and wet and dry testing. As these watches are professional devices, they can be water tested to 1,200 metres. All this work, which includes a complete rebuild of a complex mechanical device, was £395 for what feels like a new watch. Delighted with the result, I’ll make sure I don’t miss the next recommended service in three years time. t almost £70, this at-home gel polish kit is a bit of an investment but with my regular gel manicure costing £25, I figured even if I got three manicures, let alone the 10 applications suggested on the box, I’d be quids in. Along with the essential LED lamp, the kit included orange stick, buffer, lint-free wipes, gel cleanser, primer, base and top coat and gel polish. The instructions were very clear but I also watched a couple of YouTube videos to familiarise myself with the process. It was exactly like my last salon experience but took a bit longer as I had to wait between each ‘curing’ before working on the other hand. It’s a 30 second cure for base and top coat and a one minute for each colour coat. Are my home efforts as good as a salon? Not really but six days on they are still chip free and super shiny – although they did glow white in a couple of clubs with UV/ black light. The kit is great for convenience and everyday nails but I’d still definitely book a professional gel polish for a special occasion. www.sensationail.co.uk.

Her point of view: Always up for trying somewhere new, last week I visited JM Waxing, a stylish waxing room which sits inside the busy Dickson Reid hair salon on Frederick St, for a legs and underarms wax. Owner and proprietor of the business, Joanna Mancini is easy natured and confident, and didn’t make embarrassing small talk - a huge plus whilst being waxed by a stranger. As my first wax of the year, JM Waxing was a great place to start. My hair is very fair so Jo used SoBerry Lycon hot wax on me. Did you know you can get different types of wax for different hair and skin types? Aloe Vera for sensitive skin, apricot for thick and SoBerry for thin hair. I normally get the hot wax layered onto my skin, followed by a rip and a small squeal. This time was different; Jo giving a three second warning as conversation flowed and within 15 minutes I was good to go. JM Waxing offers waxing at its best. I’m hooked. His point of view: Despite being an avid groomer, waxing’s just never been on my radar (we’ve all seen The 40 Year-Old-Virgin). So, with a
chirpy sense of sado-curiosity I visited JM Waxing to have my chest, brows and nasal hair dealt with, and my blokey preconceptions challenged. “This’ll be a breeze,” says the lovely Jo. We’ll see. Any concerns about my eyebrows looking overly sculpted were allayed without having to voice them, Jo advising we’d simply be “removing the fluff”. I’m embarrassed to say I nodded off slightly during this, waking to super neat, natural looking eyebrows. Chest next and while this was a little more uncomfortable, it was far from unpleasant and over as swiftly as it had begun. The results of this were the most surprising of the three treatments; a profound anti-aging effect and athletic look, well worth two minutes of smarting. Finally was the nasal wax. Now anyone who’s plucked a rogue straggler knows the eye-streaming distress normally associated; so imagine my surprise when, after a quick yank, I heard a friendly “all done”. Amazing. ESTABLISHED, SINCE 1965 Charlie Miller 55 years ago, a 14-year-old boy was shaving the back of his father’s hairline with a Gillette razor when his mother asked “Charles, wouldn’t you like to be a hairdresser?” Now celebrating 50 years of his eponymous hairdressing salons in Edinburgh, Charlie Miller OBE tells us how he got here… “Fifty years ago after a wonderful training and five years in Bob’s, the best barber shop in town, I decided it was time to open up on my own and take men’s hairdressing to a new level,” recalls Charlie. “I found a small shop for lease in a housing estate in Prestonfield Avenue which my wife, Janet, named His Hair. After two years we moved to Rose Street, a street that was emerging as a fashion hub in the city.” Rose Street proved the perfect locale for Charlie’s expanding salon requirements and as the business matured; the family became increasingly involved in its growth and development. “In 1995 we opened a second
salon and then, when we had the right people in place to move forward, we opened a further three in 1998, 2005 and 2010,” Charlie explains. The search for a team that shared Charlie’s obvious passion started close to home with his clear love for family. ““My gifted, talented and dedicated sons, Jason and Josh, are joint MDs along with co-director India (Jason’s wife), our International Artistic & Creative Director. hen Sally de Waard first set eyes on the Old Millhouse, she knew it was a challenge she could handle. Positioned eight miles from Edinburgh on the banks of the River Esk and surrounded by 3.5 acres of land, the B-listed property had been empty for years and was in much need of love and attention, when her partner, Terry came across it by chance online. “It was a lovely day in June 2012 when I first viewed the house. The driveway was overgrown but at the top stood this beautiful but very sad building. I immediately called Terry and told him we had to go for it,” explains Sally. “It was a massive undertaking but it never fazed us. It wasn’t without its stressful moments of course, you only have to watch all the renovation programmes on TV to see how difficult it can be. We were very fortunate though and the local planning and building control departments were very helpful.”
EXTERIOR: The extension is a new addition to the property, called The Orangery (nicknamed ‘the talking room’). It has no TV as it’s purely for relaxing. When we hold an event it converts to sit 40 people for a wedding breakfast or family celebration. It’s a fantastic space and feels like you are sitting in the garden. We often spot deer and foxes. LIVING ROOM: When decorating a room I usually start with one piece, be it a rug or my chosen fabric and work back from there. The Jack Vettriano print is a favourite of Terry’s so that was the starting piece. The Bird fabric is Spanish from my contacts in Dubai, I have actually just introduced lovely big duck egg blue easy chairs I picked up from Inverleith Salesroom, which now bring ‘water’ into the room. The lamps are Italian, over 50 years old and were given to me by my mother.

One of the few mistakes made throughout the renovation was a very costly one. After approving the architect’s design of the stairs, the finished product was unsuitable. “In hindsight we didn’t have the experience or expertise to judge the staircase from the drawings. It was made and fitted, and had to be hauled out and discarded… firewood for a year. We had already moved in so it was back to ladders for three months. Our contractor then found a carpenter who handcrafted a new one on site and the end result is fantastic. But it was a very painful time for us.” Despite this setback Sally remained upbeat throughout the restoration, eventually giving up her job to project manage the work. After two years of bringing the historic building back to life with the help of a contractor, architect and team of stonemasons, its new owners moved in last year. “Now that it’s finished, I would describe my home as traditional and contemporary. It’s beautiful, warm and very
THE KITCHEN: Other than the four walls, the curved stone recess in the kitchen was the only original feature left in the house. It was painstakingly restored by Kevin, a gentlemen who worked on the house from start to finish. The Chandelier came from Dubai and is our bit of bling paradise. BATHROOM: Our roll top bath came from Victoria Plumb, great quality at affordable prices. It’s the perfect spot to have a long soak looking out into the trees, as this en-suite is part of the master bedroom on the third level of the house.

comfortable.” Stone, glass and oak are used throughout the house, helping to create its slick, country cottage feel. The main bedroom is Sally’s favourite room, thanks to the mix of Scottish themed fabrics and textures. “Mixing different textures stimulates the senses in terms of both sight and touch. I used silks, which gives off different shades depending on how the light changes in the room and I added wool to create a feeling of warmth.” The interior takes inspiration from travels and an eclectic mix of worldly finds but one of her favourite pieces of furniture is the Chinese Cabinet, sourced in Dubai where she used to run an antique shop. There are also Spanish fabrics throughout the house, antiques from auctions in Edinburgh and ornaments found in Singapore. The beauty of Sally’s converted Millhouse is that she’s opened the doors for others to enjoy. An intimate wedding,
anniversary, or just the chance to reunite under one roof with old friends are possible in this beautifully converted stone house, available for exclusive use hire. Growing up, Sally’s dream home would have looked like her dolls’ house, but somewhere in East Lothian. Now? “This one”, she answers simply. We’re inclined to agree. THE BEDROOM: The colour scheme started from the tweed and thistle cushions I was given from my friend Sue. The Thistle fabric is from Country fabrics at Crook of Devon - a fabulous shop. I have always loved this fabric so started my colour scheme from that. We sourced the headboard from a company called One Bay and the dressing table is an antique I found at Drum Antiques in Edinburgh. FIREPLACE: The fireplace underneath the Jack Vettriano print is from Stonecraft in Edinburgh and we use it while sitting in the Orangery in the cooler months. The fireplace in the living room, which is on the first level in the house, I discovered on eBay and it had been rescued from a country house in Cornwall. We burn logs in this and we use it nearly every night in winter.

ICONIC EDINBURGH Moray House

M
oray House is one of the Old Town’s most historic, and yet also most invisible buildings, hidden in plain sight on the Canongate. It dates back to 1625, at a time when the Canongate with its more open spaces was a popular place for an aristocratic townhouse. In 1643 the house passed to the Countess of Moray and the building adopted the name it still has today. Today one of the most obvious features is the gateway with its two large obelisk shaped piers and a porter’s lodge. The gate is normally open, so it is possible to walk through and see the south side of the building. Look out for the initials of the Countess above one of the upper windows. The other striking thing is the large stone balcony that hangs over the Canongate, held up with elaborately carved corbels. On Saturday 18 May 1650, this feature was the scene of a dramatic moment in Edinburgh’s history.
That day the house was the venue for the wedding reception of Lord Lorne, son of the Marquess of Argyll, and Lady Mary Stuart, daughter of the Earl of Moray. However Argyll had something else to celebrate that day. His archenemy the Marquess of Montrose had been captured a few weeks before, and that same day he was to be brought into Edinburgh for execution. Montrose was met at the foot of the Canongate by his executioner, and was paraded up the street bound to a high chair on the back of a cart. The procession stopped outside Moray House for members of the wedding party to come on to the balcony and gaze on their stricken enemy. It was said that one of the party spat on Montrose, but Argyll hid unable to look him in the face. Moray House was also once well known for its gardens, but now only a few fragments remain. arch can still be seen in a small garden on the campus, and tucked away in a side lane is the old garden pavilion. This unprepossessing building was once at the centre of the political drama that saw Scotland and England united in the Act of Union. Moray House became a teacher training college in 1848, and it remains in that use today as part of the University of Edinburgh. However it is regularly part of Doors Open Day, and that is a great opportunity to see another reminder of the house’s grand past. ver the past few years Thistle Street has garnered a reputation for its laidback bars and unpretentious eateries. The arrival of El Cartel, a Mexican street food restaurant, only helps cement this street on the must-visit list. Located where Tex Mex II once stood, El Cartel originally opened back in November. An electrical fire forced the closure of the restaurant - but it's now back, and cooler than before. Devoid of lime interiors and sizzling fajitas, El Cartel is an entirely different venture from Stu McCluskey, the man behind Bon Vivant and Devil’s Advocate. Dark and atmospheric with quirky touches like a metal corrugated ceiling, even without the hip hop music playing there’s a feel-good vibe that’s hard to match with anywhere else in town. There is a no reservation policy here but those not lucky enough to bag a table immediately can enjoy an aperitif across
the road at Bon Vivant until a table does become available staff will even come and get you. Now that's service. Once seated, peruse the menu with a delicious frozen margarita, £6.50. Made with Don Julio tequila and everything from plum to blackberry and apple, the flavours change regularly so keep an eye on the board for specials. The food menu is small but perfectly formed with antojitos, essentially starters or little bites, priced from £3 and the main event, their signature soft corn tacos individually hand pressed in-house, priced from £5.50. The idea is that you order a couple of dishes each and take it from there everything is made fresh to order so dishes come out as and when they’re ready. To keep hunger pangs at bay we shared the jalapeno bombers, £4, crisp and golden on the outside and oozing with soft melted cheese in the middle, and the fresh, flavoursome and moreish guacamole nacional, £4.50.

Seasoned perfectly, the dishes were light and delicious. To add extra spice, try the ‘hot sauce’, a secret recipe of executive chef Nico Ewart. Desserts are thin on the ground here (it’s ice cream or sorbet) but what they do have a lot of is tequila and mezcal – make sure you try the Del Maguey Vida, £4.40, or the Quiquiriqui Matatlan, £3.70, before you leave instead. Potent, but oh so good… Whether you visit El Cartel midweek or at the weekend, expect a good chilled atmosphere. And even better food. I
’ve often walked past the mysterious high-walled courtyard on Henderson Street and promised myself I’d find out what hides inside. Anfora is, at its heart, a wine bar but also offers a relaxed dining experience. The venue’s split into two distinct areas; a cosy, vintage French bar bistro as you enter and a more formal dining space. The historical dining room is where traders would’ve bartered over wine 400 years ago and now, with the room stripped back to reveal the exquisite original stuccos, you can practically smell the grapes. While the space is grand, the décor and ambience is simple, elegant and easy. Anfora’s French influence carries to the menu options; an à la carte or reasonably priced prix fixe (three course lunch £12.50 or dinner for £15.50). We opted for the à la carte with the suggested wine pairings. I began with some delicate, melt-in-the-mouth pan seared scallops; matched perfectly with a rich chorizo jam and punctuated with zesty apple and cauliflower puree full stops. The wine pairing was a citrusy refreshing 2013 Terre des Olivettes Viognier, just sharp enough to cut through that rich chorizo, ideal. Both of our starters were sublimely plated but I must confess to a major
case of food envy; my cohort’s pigeon breast was, without doubt, one of the prettiest dishes I’ve ever seen. My main was coupled with a 2010 Rhone from Châteauneuf-du-Pape; full of dark fruit, herb and spice, and the perfect teammate for my medium rare rump of lamb. The hugely generous portion of tender lamb was presented atop some jersey royals and maple glazed carrots with a pea and mint puree; the most expensive main option at £17 and worth every penny. The final leg of our two and a half hour sojourn meant cheese and dessert wine. The Alforn cheeseboard came with a balanced selection, some zingy homemade chutney, artisanal bread and juicy local blackberries. The match was a Beaumes de Venise Muscat from 2013. Again, right on point for the dish. Full marks. Our Saturday afternoon feast at Anfora will be hard to top. Go try if you can.

Viva Espana It’s hard to imagine a link between the global recession and an upturn in Edinburgh eating but the welcome influx of Spaniards and their food is almost certainly that. PERFECT HOME COCKTAILS Unless you’re a trained mixologist; the cocktails you make at home are never quite as good. Calum Lawrie from Panch Drinks agrees and he’s got a plan to change that. He’s developed a fool proof ratio system based on the five main flavour elements of a well-balanced cocktail. With the aid of Edinburgh-based product designers Cramasie they’ve came up with The Cocktail Key. “After many years of training bartenders, I wanted to introduce a tool to simplify the process of making cocktails without compromising drink quality. MAKE MINE A… CIROC PINEAPPLE SUMMER PUNCH For a drink that packs a fresh and fruity punch this vodka based concoction will be right up your street.
