Longshot novice targets Jenkins By SUSAN LYNN The Iola Register

Margie Wakefield knows it would be an upset of epic proportions to unseat incumbent Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins. Which is why the Lawrence Democrat has been surprised by the support she has been attracting for the 2nd Congressional seat, which includes Allen County. “I’ve been gobsmacked,” said Wakefield in a visit to the communities of Iola, Humboldt and Chanute on Wednesday morning. Wakefield, 56, credits the response to constituents tiring of Jenkins’ toeing

the Republican Party line, with nothing in return for Kansas. Earlier this year, for example, Rep. Jenkins introduced legislation to overturn the Affordable Care Act — the 51st time by Republicans. “That’s the very definition of insanity,” Wakefield said, “where you try the same thing over and over but expect to get a different result. “The majority of Americans like the new health insurance plan,” Wakefield said. “They like that they can get health insurance despite having a pre-exist-

In a run-up to graduation ceremonies Sunday afternoon, Iola High School seniors were honored twice Wednesday evening. First, they and a handful of underclassmen were recognized at an awards presentation in the school’s commons area. Complete details of award winners will be reported in Saturday’s Register. Then, they trekked to Wesley United Methodist Church for baccalaureate services.

Banking on pot

Youth ministers Mason Wilson, Harvest Baptist, and Matt Stuckey, Wesley United, encouraged the seniors to keep their paths centered on God. Wilson asked the 30 seniors attending to “love God and love people. My goal is to see every young person make a difference, have an impact.” “There are many houses of worship, but one thing brings us all together, God,” Stuckey said. “You will have many highs and lows and God always will be there for you.” He encouraged the students to talk daily with God through

Lawmakers approve marijuana financial system Organization sponsors stoplight dance By KRISTEN WYATT Associated Press

Colorado lawmakers have approved the world’s first financial system for the marijuana industry, a network of uninsured cooperatives designed to give pot businesses a way to access basic banking services. The plan, approved Wednesday, seeks to move the marijuana industry away from its cash-only roots. Banks routinely reject pot businesses for even basic services such as checking accounts because they fear running afoul of federal law, which considers marijuana and its proceeds illegal. The result: Pot shop owners deal in large amounts of cash, which makes them targets for criminals. Or they try to find ways around the problem, like drenching their proceeds in air fresh-

ener to remove the stink of marijuana and try to fool traditional banks into accepting their money. “This is our main problem: Financial services for marijuana businesses,” said Sen. David Balmer, RCentennial. “We are trying to improvise and come up with something in Colorado to give marijuana business some opportunity, so they do not have to store large amounts of cash.” Colorado became the first state to allow recreational pot sales, which started Jan. 1. Washington state will follow suit, with retail sales expect to start in July. The U.S. Treasury Department said in February that banks could serve the marijuana industry under certain conditions. With the industry emerging from the underground, states want to track marijuana sales and collect taxes. It’s a lot easier

prayer. “And don’t be afraid to serve,” Stuckey said. “You’re all unique and you can leave your mark on the world.” Several of the seniors had roles in the service. Mackenzie Weseloh led the call to worship and also sang in the Wesley praise group. Levi Baker gave the invocation. Hannah Endicott and Bryan Mueller read Scripture. Halie Cleaver read a commissioning statement, concluding with, “Be at peace with your neighbor and your God, and be happy.”

to do that when the businesses have bank accounts. But most banks have shrugged at the Treasury guidelines, calling them too onerous to accept marijuana-related clients. “This is not something that we can wait for any further,” said another banking sponsor, Rep. Jonathan Singer, D-Longmont. The bill approved Wednesday would allow marijuana businesses to pool money in cooperatives, but the co-ops would on take effect if the U.S. Federal Reserve agrees to allow them to do things like accept credit cards or checks. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper supports the pot bank plan and is expected to sign it into law, though a spokesman said Wednesday the governor had yet to review the final language. Iolans will have the opportunity to bust a move on the town square. Power Up Iola is hosting its first fundraiser in the community with a Stoplight Dance from 9 to 11 p.m. May 16. The dance will be on the east side of the square between Madison Avenue and East Street. Those who are in a relationship are encouraged to wear red, if it’s “complicated” wear yellow and singletons are to wear green. “We wanted something exciting and fun for our first fundraiser,” Power Up member Elyssa Jackson said. “We had a dance like this at my university and people here really liked the idea.” Power Ups are 21- to

39-year-olds who live in rural areas. Power Ups enjoy things like the ability to know your neighbors, commute to work with no traffic, being able to shop in local stores and have community engagement. The newly formed Iola organization is trying to raise funds to help out in the community. To enter the event dancegoers must purchase a wristband for $5. The wristband comes in handy after the dance. Local bars, Scooters and 5 O’clock Somewhere, will have exclusive drink specials for those wearing the stoplight wristband. Wristbands will be available at the dance or can be purchased at Around the Corner, Class Act and Fifty 50. These stores are managed or owned by Power Up age people. “That’s what is important to me, supporting Power Up-age business owners and managers,” Jackson said. “I want to help support them in their business ventures.” See STOPLIGHT | Page A5

Pancake breakfast planned for Saturday Haunt For Hirschprung’s, a local effort dedicated to raising funds for children suffering from the rare disease, will host a pancake breakfast Saturday morning at the Iola National Guard Armory. For $5, participants will get all the pancakes they can eat from 7:30 to 11:30. Juice and coffee also will be served. Proceeds will go to the Giving Hope Program, affiliated with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which treats children suffering from Hirschprung’s, a disease that forms when nerve cells do not fully

develop within a child’s intestines, often causing partial or complete bowel obstruction. All children with the disease require surgical treatment. The National Guard also is hosting a recruiting event to coincide with the breakfast. For more information, contact Andy and Theresa Laffery, 3631742, or Brian and Lindsey Shaughnessy, 3801213. Hunt for Hirschsprung’s also has a car show and hot rod run planned for Aug. 16 and a fright house on Halloween night.

5 Kansas counties declare disasters WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated five counties of south-central Kansas as disaster areas because of production losses caused by drought. The agency has declared Butler, Kingman, Reno, Sedgwick and Harvey counties as primary disaster areas. The designation lets farmers and ranchers seek federal assistance, Sen. Jerry Moran announced Wednesday.

The declaration also makes producers in 12 contiguous counties eligible for help. Those counties are Barber, Chase, Cowley, Elk, Greenwood, Harper, McPherson, Marion, Pratt, Rice, Stafford and Sumner. Farmers and ranchers in the 17 counties may receive federal disaster help such as the emergency loan program and the supplemental revenue assistance payment program, Moran said.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Voters in Kansas and Arizona will have to provide proof of their U.S. citizenship when registering to vote using the federal form even as a U.S. agency appeals a federal judge’s order that helps those states enforce their voter registration requirements, the judge ruled Wednesday. U.S. District Eric Melgren rejected the requests from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and voting rights groups to put his earlier ruling on hold while the case goes to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Melgren ruled on March 19 that the commission must immediately modify a national voter registration form to add special instructions for Arizona and Kansas residents about those states’ proof-of-citizenship requirements.

The commission contends that the added d o c u m e n tation burdens result in an overall decrease in regis- Kris Kobach tration of eligible citizens, undermining the purpose of the National Voter Registration Act. The states argue the requirement protects the integrity of their elections by ensuring noncitizens aren’t voting. Melgren ordered the commission to carry out “forthwith without further delay” his March 19 directive. The judge wrote that the commission and its supporters had not shown that the public interest is best served by suspending his ruling. “Public interest is best expressed through laws enacted by the public’s elected representatives,” Melgren wrote in a nine-page

fused to comply with a federal court order,” Kobach said. “The rule of law requires parties to comply with a federal order. Here we have the federal government thinking it can defy a federal court order.” The election commission had argued that it is likely to succeed on appeal because Melgren’s order conflicts with a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year, among other things. Arizona enacted its proof-of-citizenship requirement by voter initiative in 2004, and Alabama, Georgia and Kansas followed with similar laws. Most voters in Arizona and Kansas register with state forms, but their officials said the availability of the federal form created a loophole in enforcement of proofof-citizenship requirements. Some 17,604 Kansans now have their voter registrations on hold as a result of the requirement.

Educators charged in test cheating PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A city principal and four teachers perpetuated a culture of cheating on standardized tests by changing student answers, providing answers to students and improperly reviewed questions prior to administering the tests, prosecutors alleged in announcing charges against the five. Attorney General Kathleen Kane said today that the defendants are accused of “perpetuating a culture of cheating” on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests over a five-year period. A grand jury found that after the cheating stopped in 2012, the percentage of students who scored well on the tests dropped dramatically, authorities said. The School Reform Commission, an appointed board that oversees the district, in January fired three high school principals

and announced plans to discipline dozens of teachers and administrators following an investigation into cheating. The educators worked at Cayuga Elementary School in the Hunting Park section of North Philadelphia. Charged were principal Evelyn Cortez, 59, and four teachers: Jennifer Hughes, 59; Lorraine Vicente, 41; Rita Wyszynski, 65; and Ary Sloane, 56. Cortez lives in the suburb of Dresher and Hughes in Jeffersonville. The other three are from Philadelphia. The defendants were

Thus the inability to register voters is “only theoretical,” the judge said. Bryan Whitener, a spokesman for the commission, said in an email that the agency was reviewing the ruling and exploring its options. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach told The Associated Press said it’s significant that the judge found that the harm to Kansas and Arizona outweigh the alleged harm to the federal agency. “It is shocking that the federal government waited 49 days and re-

TOPEKA — The decision by state officials not to expand Medicaid eligibility could deny thousands of uninsured Kansans access to life-saving cancer treatments, according to a recent report by researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center. “There are some people who will die of cancer because we’re not able to screen them or provide them with the prevention services they need,” said Dr. Edward Ellerbeck, director of the Cancer Control and Population Health Program at the medical center. The report, issued in March, estimates that without Medicaid expansion about 40,000 uninsured Kansans may not get necessary screenings for colorectal, breast and cervical cancers or get the medical help they need to quit smoking. “The potential for improved health and reduced financial impact of cancer would be drastically altered if Kansans with incomes less than 100 percent of FPL (federal poverty level) had access to common life-saving screening and prevention services,” the report concluded. Currently, most of the approximately 400,000 Kansans enrolled in Medicaid — called KanCare — are poor children, new mothers, the disabled and seniors who need help paying for nursing home care. Able-bodied adults with children are eligible only if they earn less than 33 percent of FPL,

The KU report projected that Medicaid expansion would give more than 11,800 Kansans access to smoking prevention services and help more than 4,300 obtain colorectal cancer screenings. In addition, more than 20,000 women who otherwise might not receive screenings for breast and cervical cancer would have access to them if covered by Medicaid. The projections were based on the number of Kansans expected to fall into the “gap” between 33 percent of FPL and 100 percent of FPL and the numbers within that population whose age or health status would make them eligible for the screenings. KU report in a recent column he wrote for the association’s newsletter. “This excellent study is concrete information that providing access to health care to this group of low-income, uninsured Kansans through our KanCare program could improve the health and quality of life of a significant number of our fellow citizens,” Bell wrote. Kansas hospitals are leading the lobbying effort for expansion because administrators see it as a way to reduce the amount of charity care they provide and to offset reductions in Medicare reimbursements that they agreed to absorb to help pay for the reform law. Kansas is one of 19 states — most of them headed by Republican governors opposed to the ACA — that have opted not to expand the program.

Brownback: Mixed messages

Gov. Sam Brownback and Republican legislative leaders have given various reasons for opposing expansion. Ini-

tially, they questioned the reliability of the federal government’s promise to pay 100 percent of expansion costs for the first three years and not less than 90 percent thereafter. More recently, the governor has said he doesn’t want to increase Medicaid enrollment until the state can afford to serve Kansans with physical and developmental disabilities who are now on waiting lists. However, just before the start of the Medicaid expansion debate, Brownback stressed the importance of early detection in an open letter to “the citizens of Kansas” published as part of the state’s 2012–2016 cancer control plan. “It is imperative for Kansans to work with their physicians to determine what screenings are appropriate for them based on family history and risk factors,” Brownback wrote. “It is important to understand that being diagnosed with cancer means it is time to fight. Working together, we will beat this disease.”

~ Journalism that makes a difference

Blame rise of deadly superbugs on human folly In September, the Centers for Disease Control sounded the alarm: Unless we stopped misusing and overusing antibiotics, they could become useless against disease-causing bacteria that are becoming resistant to them — evolving into so-called “superbugs.” We could find ourselves living in a “post-antibiotic” era, the CDC warned, one in which common infections and minor injuries could once again prove fatal because antibiotics are no longer effective. Now the World Health Organization is saying that era is already here. Superbugs able to resist the most powerful antibiotics — drugs known as carbapenems — have been found all over the globe. And the problem is only getting worse. One of the most common superbugs is MRSA, a staph infection that kills an estimated 19,000 Americans each year, mostly in hospitals and convalescent facilities. Many countries — including Canada, Great Britain, Japan and Australia — report they have patients with the dangerous

sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea that is resistant to all available antibiotics. And more than half the patients in many countries can no longer be treated for E. coli, which can cause meningitis and in-

fections of the blood and kidneys. A Doctors Without Borders physician reports, “We see horrendous rates of antibiotic resistance wherever we look in our field operations.”

It continues to be important for doctors to responsibly prescribe antibiotics; for patients to use them as intended; and to stop routine, low-dosage use of the drugs in the livestock and poultry industries.

Lawmakers must give the Food and Drug Administration greater authority over use of antibiotics among farm animals. Currently, more than 70 percent of all antibiotics in the United States are given to farm animals, either to bulk them up faster or as a preventive measure in crowded, dirty conditions. But the existing prevalence of superbugs suggests those steps alone aren’t enough anymore. We’ll need to take stronger measures to prevent infections in the first place, since it’s become harder to treat them after the fact. And the world will need to invest in research to develop new medicines that will be more effective against bacteria resistant to what’s available now. That investment isn’t lucrative to drug companies more interested in developing longterm maintenance medicines rather than ones that are taken for short periods of time. A federal Manhattan Projectstyle initiative might be called for in this case. — The (Tacoma, Wash.) News Tribune

How we became unwitting migrants By LESLIE WHARTON McClatchy News Service

My husband and I are climate change disaster survivors. Following our federal scientists’ work on Third National Climate Assessment, we want to share our story. We hope that the NCA release, along with our firsthand account, will help others realize climate change is happening in the United States and will likely get worse. My husband and I had our first climate shock years ago while scrambling up a steep gorge to ice climb a frozen waterfall. To our shock, the waterfall wasn’t there. We looked and couldn’t find a trickle of water, let alone ice. Later, while backpacking in the Rocky Mountains, a ranger warned us to watch for falling dead trees. As we hiked, it was so hot. There was no shade, and all the trees were dead from pine beetle infestation and drought. Instead of feeling joy, we were fearful of a possible wildfire. The fires did come, and we lost our home to the High Park Fire, one of many recent drought-driven forest fires plaguing Colorado. The summer we lost our home, the heat was record breaking. The hills glowed at

night with flames. The fires destroyed 259 homes, and one woman died. It was 21 days before we were allowed to visit the site where our home had stood. Experts reported unprecedented fire behavior. It was so hot, the soil was sterilized deeper than a “normal” fire, and it would take longer for the forest to grow back. The sterilization and drying out of the land also exacerbates the risks. Scared by the dangers of climate change, my husband and I decided to move to the Pacific Northwest. Driving the northern route in mid-September, fires burned in every state. I wept as we drove. We were leaving stable jobs and friends who supported us, for a cooler place where it rains. We became climate change refugees. Since then, I have dedicated myself to curbing humancaused climate change and am shocked at how little action the U.S. population has taken. The carbon we produce from burning fossil fuels is forming a thick blanket around the Earth. A forest fire is a doubleedged sword, adding carbon as it burns and killing plant life that if alive, would absorb carbon. The reality is that global warming is happening faster than many experts predicted and faster than many species

can adjust. It is causing all kinds of strange weather patterns: storms and floods, followed by droughts and fires. Scientists who wrote the National Climate Assessment confirm warming and its impacts. In recent decades, the Southwest has been hotter than during any period in the last 600 years. Future droughts in the Colorado River Basin will be more frequent, intense and longer than at any point in the historical record. This will have severe impacts on the region’s agriculture, affecting millions of Coloradans. I’m embarrassed that my country lags behind other nations in addressing this challenge. My husband and I wish Americans would move past debating the well-established science of human-caused climate change and focus on implementing solutions. We cannot stand by and wait for scientists and engineers to find solutions, God to unfold a plan or policymakers to enact a new law. We must take a hard look at our lives and work together to stop further damage, and create a safer future. Wharton is a mountain climber and carpenter from Fort Collins, Colo. She now lives with her husband in Bellingham, Wash.

Report: Climate change already affecting every U.S. region (MCT)

WASHINGTON — Climate change is already being felt in every region of the United States, resulting in hotter summers, shorter winters, extreme precipitation, even worsening allergies that will change the way Americans live, according to a government report released Tuesday. The National Climate Assessment mandated by Congress and published every four years to guide policymakers, offers sobering details of climate change’s immediate effects. “The overall message is that climate change is happening right now — we can’t think of this as an issue for future generations,” said Radley Horton, one of the lead authors and a climate scientist at the Earth Institute’s Center for Climate Systems Research at Columbia University. “We know that the effects on ecosystems, infrastructure, economics and public health are going to

grow.” The report sketches out grim scenarios for different regions. The Northeast and Midwest, for instance, would see many more heavy downpours that could lead to flooding and erosion. The Southwest, including California, would be more prone to extreme heat, drought and wildfire, while the Northwest could see widespread tree dieoff because of wildfire, insect outbreaks and disease. “Evidence of climate change appears in every region and impacts are visible in every state,” the report asserts, saying that a national infrastructure built to withstand “historical conditions” already is being overwhelmed by prolonged rains, rapid snowmelt and extreme heat. The assessment tackles head-on humanity’s contribution to climate change, the thorniest question tied to the issue and the heart of the debate that has deadlocked ef-

forts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. A variety of evidence confirms human activities have driven global warming over the last 50 years, the report concludes, citing specifically the emissions of heat-trapping gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas. Arguments often used to deny that man-made climate change is occurring are dismissed in decisive language. The idea that warming temperatures have been caused by greater solar activity or volcanic eruptions, for example, is not supported by satellite data, the report states. A recent pause in the rise of global average land temperatures “appears to be related to cyclic changes in the oceans and in the sun’s energy output,” it says. The report, written by more than 240 scientists, businesspeople and other experts, uses existing data to make the case that climate change is a fact

whose effects will widen. It says the U.S. annual mean temperature since the late 19th century has risen by 1.3 to 1.9 degrees, depending on the study, with most of the increase occurring since 1970. “Temperatures are projected to rise another 2 degrees to 4 degrees in most areas” of the country over the next few decades, according to the report. If the U.S. and other big polluters cut emissions considerably, U.S. temperatures would rise about 3 degrees to 5 degrees by the end of the century. Under today’s “businessas-usual scenario,” U.S. average temperatures would rise by 5 degrees to 10 degrees. Most Americans believe that climate change is happening or will happen in their lifetimes, according to a Gallup poll in March. But only 1 in 3 sees it as a “serious threat” to their way of life, the poll reported. The White House, which has named special adviser

John Podesta to spearhead its climate efforts, has fully embraced the effort to build “resilience” to the impact of higher temperatures. In February, the administration created so-called climate hubs under the Agriculture Department to connect farmers and ranchers with experts who could help them prepare for wildfires, pests, flooding and drought. The president asked Congress for $1 billion in his 2015 budget to establish a “climate resiliency fund” that would finance research, preparation and infrastructure to adapt to extreme weather driven by global warming. Such efforts help the White House connect to Americans who might be seen as strange bedfellows for a Democratic president, such as rural farmers and insurance executives. Advocates for legislative action to combat climate change hope that, over time, those connections will build a coalition.

Strong winds derail train McPHERSON, Kan. (AP) — Strong winds that blew through central Kansas knocked a train off the tracks, downed power lines and damaged roofs. No serious injuries were reported after Wednesday night’s storms. The McPherson Coun-

ty Sheriff ’s office says most of the damage was reported in Canton and Galva, where wind blew 33 cars of a freight train off the tracks. The sheriff ’s office says two people were on board but no one was hurt. Westar Energy reported 12 poles in that area were damaged, knock-

ing out power to about 650 people. The National Weather Service says the winds reached 65 to 80 mph as the storm moved north out of Harper County. Power lines and trees also were downed in Dickinson County, with damage reported in Abilene and Carlton.

Pot: Shops get financed Continued from A1

Lawmakers from both parties supported the banking co-ops as a way to properly audit marijuana shops and to make sure they’re paying all their taxes. Dispensary owners came to the Capitol this session to tell of their difficulties paying taxes and utilities in cash and the dangers of dealing in cash. “It is very easy to see somebody get killed over this issue,” Marijuana Industry Group Director Michael Elliott testified last month.

The plan had bipartisan support, though some Republicans said that the effort won’t pass federal muster. A few banks are accepting marijuana clients in light of the federal regulations. Numerica Credit Union in eastern Washington state is accepting limited business from marijuana growers and processors, The Spokesman-Review reported Wednesday. Colorado pot shop owners say a small number of credit unions will do business with them, too,

Tennis star’s home burns

By TAMARA LUSH The Associated Press

Investigators were continuing to process the scene of a fire at a million dollar home owned by former tennis star James Blake where the bodies of two adults and two teenagers were found. Officials say the early Wednesday fire inside the home in Tampa’s exclusive Avila neighborhood was intentionally set. Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Col. Donna Lusczynski said Blake rented the home to the Campbell family. Voter registration records identified them as Darrin Campbell and his wife, Kimberly, but investigators say they won’t know the victims’ identities until preliminary autopsies are completed. Officials say the Campbells were unaccounted for Wednesday. Lusczynski described the fire as unusual and said there were “vari-

ous fireworks” throughout the home. Two victims suffered from upper-body trauma, but Lusczynski didn’t indicate James Blake which ones or provide other details. She also said no weapons had been found at the home and that murder-suicide was a possibility. A former neighbor, George Connley, said Darrin Campbell was the treasurer of Carrollwood Day School, a private school attended by the Campbell’s teenage children, Colin and Megan. “They were a very nice family, we know nothing of any problems,” Connley said. “The kids were outstanding children. This is very difficult to put our arms around.” He said that Kimberly Campbell was “so-

phisticated and classy.” At one time, Darrin Campbell was the senior vice president at PODS, a company that provides mobile, temporary shipping and storage containers. According to his LinkedIn profile, he left PODS in 2007 and was a vice president at IVANS, an insurance company. IVANS was purchased by another company and Campbell no longer worked there, said Matt Fogt, a spokesman for the new company, Applied Systems, who was reached by telephone. The fire at the morethan-6,000-square-foot home north of downtown Tampa was reported about 6 a.m. Wednesday. Blake bought the home in the Avila subdivision in 2005 for $1.5 million, according to Hillsborough County property records. It had five bedrooms and five bathrooms. Video of the fire showed it engulfed in flames.

like that insurance companies can no longer set a limit on their coverage. They like that they can keep their children on their policies until they are 26. They like that preventive measures are covered. “Do things need to be fixed? Absolutely. But I can’t imagine rolling back the program. For many people, this is the first time they have received health insurance. They have been lifted out of desperate situations.” Wakefield said working to reduce the price of health care should be the next goal of Congress, including prescription drugs. She also was critical of Kansas joining a compact to opt out of the Affordable Care Act. If elected to Congress, Wakefield said she would not support allowing these states to selfmanage federal funds dedicated to Medicare and Medicaid. CREATING JOBS is

The best approach is from within, she said, by getting business and education leaders to work together to create emerging jobs. “We have the talent,” she said, noting a recent tour of Pittsburg State University’s School of Technology that left her greatly impressed. As a state, Wakefield said adequately funding education should be a priority. She took issue with Jenkins’ support of sharply reducing education programs such as Head Start; cuts to Pell grants for the lowincome to attend college;

and reduced funds to research institutions as outlined in the recently passed House budget. “My personal favorite, however, is the Republican proposal that students currently enrolled in college should be required to pay interest on their student loans,” she said. “As a student, I sure couldn’t have done that.” A good public education is “key to our economic growth as a nation,” she said. Kansas’ reputation as a good place to do business could use some work, Wakefield said. “People are very cognizant of the business climate here,” she said. The recent downgrade by Moody’s Investment Services for Kansas is not “business friendly.” Recent tax receipts have shown the state is considerably off the mark from its projections. “Cutting taxes in itself is not a business plan,” she said. “You have to be smart about it. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A citizens’ task force on Wednesday recommended replacing the existing three terminals at Kansas City International Airport with a single terminal, subject to more information on costs that have been estimated as high as $1.2 billion. Nineteen of the KCI Terminal Advisory Group’s 24 members voted in favor of the proposal, which mirrors a plan the city’s Aviation Department supports but which many people in the community have rejected because they like the convenience of the current set-up. The advisory group’s recommendation is intended to guide the city toward one of its most important civic building projects of the next decade, The Kansas City Star reported. The Aviation Department has said it needs to modernize the 40-year-old airport. The recommendation is the start of what could be a two-year process to devise a more de-

tailed plan for the next phase of construction. Airlines and the Aviation Department have pledged to collaborate on an affordable plan to move the airport forward by April 30, 2016. The citizens group, appointed by Kansas City Mayor Sly James, has been meeting nearly every two weeks since June, hearing from airlines, business leaders, security officials and several hundred citizens who showed up at four town hall meetings. Doing nothing is not an option, the group

concluded, because of the airport’s crumbling infrastructure, aging operating systems and insufficient gate and security space. Proponents say the proposed airport would offer better security, more parking and more retail options, and it would save on the cost of repairing the current aging facility. Opponents say that while the current airport may need significant upgrades, demolishing and rebuilding is unnecessary and would also be costly.

Fredonia home closes FREDONIA — Residents of Fredonia’s Golden Living Center were notified last Thursday of its impending closing. In a review of the nursing home, Golden Living administrators determined the structure needed “significant repairs,” according to The Wilson County Citizen. “Facilitating the

long-term correction of this issue would be cost prohibitive,” administrators said in a letter to the families of residents. “Therefore we have made the business decision to close our Living Center.” Administrators have met with families of residents. The target close date is July 1. The closure affects about 50 jobs.

Iola doubles team shows net gains By SPENCER MICHELSON The Iola Register

Doubles and singles tennis are essentially the same game, except for an obvious difference — a partner. In singles tennis, there is no one to blame except for oneself. In doubles, if a team loses, it could very well be one player’s fault over the other’s. Senior Bryan Mueller and sophomore Colby Works are a prime example of how a doubles tennis team can thrive. After going through a modest 16-8 record last season, Mueller and Works are 21-3 going into the Class 4A Regional tournament, which opens Friday in Chanute. The top performers there go on to the state tournament the following week in Winfield. “Communication on the court’s a big deal,” Works said. In order to create that chemistry, Mueller and Works trained together in the offseason. During the summer they attended lessons in Manhattan. They also played together as much as they could. “Whenever there was nice weather in the offseason, we’d just come on out

and hit on weekends,” Works said. Their goal for the offseason was to improve enough so that teams they should have beaten last year, wouldn’t give them trouble this year. “I think last year, we let a couple teams that weren’t as good as us, beat us,” Mueller said. “That’s probably been a big difference.”

Not only was last season their first season together as a doubles team, it was their first year in tennis. Not only that, head coach Joe Turner, who replaced the retired Lyle Kern, is in his first year of coaching tennis — ever. Turner helped coach Iola’s cross country team last fall. That’s where he first met

Class 4A Regionals Friday-Saturday Chanute High School Works and Mueller. “I was able to get a sense of who they were,” Turner said. “So taking on the tennis head coaching job really wasn’t a hard choice. It was really nice to jump in here and help them.” THE GOAL from the start of the season was to make it to state, Mueller said. The pair have a chance to accomplish that if they do well at regionals. In order to advance in the tournament, the pair must win their first match. A win guarantees at least two more matches. Two straight wins effectively guarantees a trip to state, although there’s also a chance by advancing through the losers bracket. “Obviously, focusing on technique and not just playing and thinking about what we’re doing and having See TENNIS | Page B6

Shields pitches KC past San Diego By JAY PARK The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) — James Shields was on another road mound and that’s a good thing for the Kansas City Royals. Then again, he really was at his home away from home. “It was nice to sleep in my own bed last night,” Shields said after pitching Kansas City past the San Diego Padres 8-0 Wednesday. Shields (4-3) won at Petco Park, which isn’t far from his residence in Rancho Santa Fe. “I got to play with the dog and see the kids for the first time in about a month,” Shields said. “It was really nice to be around the house.” Shields wasn’t a welcome sight for the San Diego batters, scattering seven hits over seven innings. With Eric Hosmer driving in a season-high four runs

and the Royals scoring three times in the first inning, Shields was able to win with less than his best. “I didn’t think my stuff way that good today,” said Shields, who threw a seasonhigh 118 pitches. “I was all over the place, getting behind in counts a lot. It was a grind day, but sometimes you got to go out there without your good stuff and compete and that is what I did.” Padres ace Andrew Cashner (2-5) didn’t see the fifth inning. “We’re kind of in a teamwide funk,” Cashner said. The Royals are headed the opposite direction. They won their second straight game, took their first series at Petco Park and snapped a five-game losing skid since rolling into town. “That was what you call an AAGG — an all-around good game in all phases,” Kansas City manager Ned

Yost said. “Shields was fantastic, the bullpen was great, our defense was solid and we had very, very good baserunning. And our offense had as good as a day as we have had against a darn good young pitcher in a long time.” For a good stretch, Shields, who struck out four and walked two, has been tough on the road. He’s won four straight starts away from Kauffmann Stadium and since the start of last season is 14-4 with a 2.00 ERA. Hosmer got three hits. He finished the series going 7 for 15 with seven RBIs, a homer and a double. “The power numbers will come,” Hosmer said. “I’m not worried about that. It’s early in the season and right now I’m just doing anything to help this team win.” “The biggest thing today was coming up with runners in scoring position and getting guys in,” he said.

Durant leads OKC to win OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Russell Westbrook had a triple-double, MVP Kevin Durant fell one assist short and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Los Angeles Clippers 112-101 on Wednesday night to tie their Western Conference semifinal series at one win apiece. Westbrook had 31 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to claim his third triple-double in his past five playoff games. Durant had 32 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists before leaving the game with 1:21 remaining. According to information provided to the Thunder by the Elias Sports Bureau, no pair of teammates has had triple-doubles in the same playoff game. J.J. Redick scored 18 points, Chris Paul had 17 points and 11 assists, and Blake Griffin added 15 points for the Clippers. Serge Ibaka and Thabo Sefolosha each scored 14 points for the Thunder, who shot 51

percent from the field and outrebounded the Clippers 52-36. The Clippers made 15 of 29 3-pointers in Game 1, but just 9 of 27 in Game 2. Durant scored 17 points in the first quarter on 7-for-11 shooting to help the Thunder take a 37-28 lead. Paul, who scored 17 points in the opening quarter of Game 1, went scoreless in the first quarter of Game 2 and watched most of the period from the bench with two fouls. The Thunder led 46-40 when both Westbrook and coach Scott Brooks were called for technical fouls. Westbrook felt he was fouled on a drive against DeAndre Jordan and didn’t get the call. The Clippers made both free throws, then Paul made a 3-pointer to cut Oklahoma City’s lead to 46-45. The Clippers went ahead when Griffin connected on a mid-range jumper with just over 4 minutes remaining in the first half.

I’ve become very Goth. I have piercings and tattoos and got my real hair cut for this part.

•You’re an early-40s wife and mother of a young son. How do you like this new look at this stage in life?

It was a little jarring at first, but I’m getting used to it. I’m having to rock the Chloe look in my real life. It’s kind of fun. I’ve had the regular long hair for many, many years, so it’s kind of cool that as a full-grown woman, I get to be the punk-rock, Goth “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” that I never was. It’s a general, dark, edgy look that you see all the time in different ways. It’s really reflective of where she’s at and how she is now angry and trying to hide and lashing out a little bit. It’s very different for me, and it’s very cool. I’m still trying to figure it out. 1:00

y a D s ’ HMS athletes earn golds Mother ERIE — Humboldt Middle School’s track team ended its 2014 season with a bang — and plenty of medals. Both the seventh- and eighth-grade boys teams took third in their respective divisions, while the girls squads took fourth in both seventh and eighth grades. Among the highlights: Kaylie Johnson set personal bests in the long jump and 400-meter dash to win gold in both events. She then anchored the seventhgrade girls medley relay team, leading them to another gold medal. Johnson, Morgan Mauk and Aricah McCall placed in all four of their events. This trio accounted for 47 medals between the three of them. Sierra Brinkerhoff improved her personal best in the long jump to win the eighth-grade girls long jump. Meanwhile, Kaiti Carpenter had a pair of strong finishes in a pair of sprints. She edged another runner at the line to take second in the 400-meter dash before passing another runner in the final leg of the medley relay, this time to win gold. On the boys’ side, the

seventh-graders’ 4x200meter relay team continued its dominance with another gold medal. Bo Bigelow and Tucker Hurst placed in all four of their events to lead the team. For the eighth-graders, Jacob Barker set personal bests in both the long jump and 400, finishing second and third, respectively. Barker and Noah Johnson placed in all four of their events. MV loses twin bill CHETOPA — Marmaton Valley High’s softball team dropped a pair of heartbreakers Tuesday on the road, falling 15-14 and 13-9 to host Chetopa. “The Lady Wildcats played a good game,” head coach Darlene Stewart said. Adding singles for Marmaton Valley were Emily Boyd, Shauna Knight, Hanna Hoffman and Brooklyn Newman. Knight had an RBI. Chetopa took a big lead in the second, then held off a furious Wildcat comeback. Boyd, Knight and Pinkerton collected two hits apiece. Hoffman added a single. Pinkerton and Jesse Gardner both hit doubles; Gardner also collected an RBI. Pinkerton pitched the distance, getting five strikeouts. “We’re still working on pitching more strikes,” Stewart said.

strategies going into the matches is a big part of (our success),” Works said. Last year, the pair won their first match in the Class 4A Regional tournament. However, they went on to lose their next two matches, missing out on the state tournament. “I’ve really been trying to push them to stay focused,” Turner said. “Just like me, I’m kind of learning

the ropes, but if you’re feeling confident it sort of just comes out in your game. That’s what I’m trying to show them. Stay confident, know what you’re going to do, attack, stay with the plan. Obviously, we can see it’s been working out really well.” “There’s definitely lots of anticipation for the tournament,” Works said. “We’re really excited to start it and see where it takes us.”
