Mustang wrestlers eye state tourney berths When Brad Carson sized up his team’s hopes for the upcoming wrestling season, he figured Iola High’s squad would have some individual standouts, but not enough members to worry about success as a team. The initial reaction from his team of wrestlers has prompted the first-year coach to think again. Iola will field a squad filled with leadership and youth, Carson said, including a pair of wrestlers who have qualified for the state wrestling tournament. Anchoring the Mustang wrestling squad is senior Stephen McDonald, a two-time state qualifier who missed his junior year because of a knee injury. McDonald will wrestle at 208 pounds, well above the 189 pounds he wrestled at as a sophomore. Carson expects McDonald to continue to thrive as a senior. “You can tell from his experience on the mat that he knows what he’s doing.” He’ll be joined by sophomore Trey Colborn, who qualified for state in his freshman year as a heavyweight. “I’m excited to see what Trey can do,” said Carson, himself a heavyweight wrestler in high school and for a short spell in college. A Parsons native, Carson began wrestling at 5 years old. Like Colborn, Carson qualified for state as a freshman in the heavyweight division. But at 189 pounds, his first opponent at state outweighed Carson by about 90 pounds. “I had him in a headlock for about a second,” Carson recalled, until the other wrestler gathered his thoughts and methodically took control. He continued to wrestle at Labette Community College before deciding to focus full time on football. He later coached football at Garden City Community College and Fort Hays State University. Most recently, he coached at a community center in Arkansas before taking a teaching job at Iola Middle School and becoming an assistant football coach. Carson was offered the head wrestling position shortly thereafter. “It was a great opportunity because wrestling is my passion,” he said. Carson sees other experienced wrestlers who should find success this season. Mustangs eye victories in Pioneer League Iola High’s Mustangs took a large step forward in 201112, increasing its win total by eight games from the previous year. In order for the ascension to continue, the Mustangs must replace a six-member senior class that accounted for more than 34 points and 20 rebounds a game. Iola will do so in the environs of the Pioneer League after leaving the Southeast Kansas League last year with a 9-12 overall record and a 2-6 mark in league play. While Iola returns only one starter, senior guard Levi Ashmore, the squad has several athletic replacements waiting in the wings, head coach Bill Peeper said. “The group this year will have good athleticism and good average size, but will lack size in the post,” Peeper said. Coons, at 6 foot, 3 inches, and Grover at 6-1, both offer strength and physicality, Peeper said. “They’ll look to take control of the interior,” Peeper said. A pair of 6-2 junior forwards, Adam Kauth and Tyler Powelson, will offer depth up front. Peeper describes both as
“long and lean,” with the versatility to fill in inside while also quick enough to play outside with range on their jump shots to play along the baseline and in the wing areas. Kaden Macha, a 6-foot sophomore forward, also may be counted on after a strong freshman campaign. “He could work his way into the mix,” Peeper said. Junior guards Tyler McIntosh, 6-1, and Trent Latta, 5-11, offer quickness and ball-handling skills. “The guards will be aggressive and should be very good at getting to the lane for

scoring or passing opportunities,” Peeper said. Other newcomers include senior forwards Tyler Clubine (6-0) and Paul Specht (5-10) and senior guard Cole Morrison (5-10). Peeper noted Iola lost plenty of size with its graduating class. “We have few true post
players,” he said. “Rebounding will be a key for this group. Technique and aggressiveness will be needed to make up for a lack of size.” Iola also must find consistency in its outside shooting. “There is limited game experience at the varsity level with this team, so many key players this year will be asked to mature and contribute in a hurry. Limiting turnovers, while improving on ball handling, will be another important aspect of the growth process.” A pair of familiar foes, Chanute and Fort Scott, remain on the Mustang schedule, while other flourishing rivalries are certain to develop in the Pioneer League. Peeper expects Central Heights and Osawatomie to be primary contenders for the league title, while Anderson County, Wellsville and Prairie View are capable of making noise. The Mustangs open the 2012-13 campaign Friday at Girard.

Fillies counting on fresh faces in 2012-13 An Iola High squad light on experience will need to gel quickly in order to thrive in a new league for the 201213 season, Fillies head coach Becky Carlson said. Iola will bring in five new starters, and only two returning letter winners, from a 9-11 squad that bowed out in the opening round of the Class 4A Substate Tournament in February. “There’s a lot of the unknown right now,” Carlson said. “We lost a lot of scoring from last year.” The Fillies also must do without the services of senior Emily Ware, who suffered a concussion shortly before practices started and is sidelined indefinitely. “We’re not sure if she’s going to make it back this season,” Carlson said. The two returnees will be counted on for their leadership and scoring. Senior Libby Shay will line up inside and outside as the Fillies season takes shape.
“She’s versatile on offense, and she’s a good defender,” Carlson said. “We are going to need her to score for us in order for us to be successful this year.” Hannah Endicott is in her second year at Iola after transferring from Marmaton Valley. “She’s strong, and will play inside for us,” Carlson said. “She’s a good shooter, but she doesn’t shoot it enough. She’s also going to have to be one of our primary scorers this year.” Among others counted on to contribute include senior forward Reagan Ford. “Her strength is inside,” Carlson said. Junior forward Emma Sigg should see plenty of action at the varsity level. “She’s a scorer, so that will help us,” Carlson said. “She’s a tough player overall.” A young, but talented crop of sophomores are certain to make their mark as well. Forwards Emery Driskel, Addie Haar, Jo Lohman,
Emma Piazza, Lexie Long, Shelby Reno and Kyra Moore all have shown glimpses of what could be a strong foundation for Iola over the next three seasons.

the Fillies grow accustomed to their new responsibilities on the court, Carlson said. “It’s going to take patience, both from the coaching staff and the players,” she said. “We’ll be looking to find our way early on. After the players start filling their roles, it’ll get smoother. It’s just a big step from players who were on freshman or junior varsity teams to step up and play a major role at the varsity level.” Carlson said Anderson County and Osawatomie appear early on as teams to contend with in Pioneer League play. (Iola ended its decadeslong affiliation with the Southeast Kansas League last year.) “If we reach our potential, we’ll be competitive with anybody,” Carlson said. “Our goal is to win the Pioneer League. Lady Cubs aim for success in 2012-13 season HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High girls have taken their lumps on the basketball court, winning a combined three games over the past two seasons. But what has been a young squad adjusting to a new coach now has a plethora of experience and talent waiting to take a big step forward in 2012-13. Returning for the second year at HHS is head coach Sherri Nelson, whose squad lost two starters from last year’s 2-19 squad. “I think we’re already starting off on a better foot than we did a year ago,” Nelson said, noting the players are more confident and comfortable in practice. “We have good athletes and a lot of kids who can contribute. What we need are players who want to score. We have a lot of the other pieces.” A trio of seniors, Aubrey Maxton, Kristin Todd and Whitney Strack, will be counted on to provide leader-
ship for the younger players, Nelson said. Maxton will serve as point guard and can distribute the ball to others, Nelson said. Todd, meanwhile, will play in the post. “Kristin’s not the tallest player, but she’s not afraid to get in there and bang. Strack, meanwhile, can utilize her court savvy and experience, Nelson said. All three will be key defenders for the Lady Cubs, as will a pair of juniors, Sheri Middleton and Breanna Kline. Middleton, at 6-feet, will draw in defense because of her height. “Kline will be our leader in points this year,” Nelson said. “Both she and Sheri have stepped up their game from last year. You could tell it during volleyball season.” Both Kline and Middleton earned all-league honors in the Tri-Valley League. Nelson would like to see both do the same in basketball. Others are expected to
contribute. Kayle Riebel, a 5-10 junior, “is the type of girl who works her tail off and does a lot of the little things,” Nelson said. “We’re going to need her to shoot more.” Morgan Morris provides another physical post player. A trio of sophomores, Lakota Wilson, Delaney Umholtz and Karsyn Menzie, all have shown flashes of talent and fared well for the Lady Cubs last year in junior varsity play. “We’re looking for them to step up from JV to the varsity level.” Another key performer is Cheyenne English, whose season was cut short last year with a serious knee injury. “A lot of our success will come from the girls believing in themselves,” Nelson said. Nelson predicts Burlington will be at or near the top of the Tri-Valley League standings, while the Cubs should expect spirited battles against Yates Center and Burlington. Humboldt opens the season Friday at Eureka. The Lady Cubs will host a preseason tournament with three games next week. Stable of veterans lead Humboldt High HUMBOLDT — If the chips fall correctly, and Humboldt High’s boys improve on the court as much as head coach David Taylor hopes they will, big things may be in store for the 2012-13 Cubs. Humboldt returns its entire starting lineup, including its top reserve off the bench, from a squad that went 15-7 last year and lost by only two points in its substate defeat. “I’m excited for these kids,” Taylor said. “If they work hard and keep doing what they’ve been doing, we should be very competitive this year.” The Cubs look to offer a lethal combination of size, speed, athleticism and tenacious defense. Want to try to beat Humboldt inside? Try going up against 6-6 senior forward Noah Thornbrugh, who earned all-state honors last year in Class 3A, while
averaging 17 points a game. “Noah is big and strong, but he has a nice touch with the ball,” Taylor said. “He can really shoot it. He’s worked on his game over the summer. It’s nice to see how his skill set has improved since his freshman season.” Want to go outside? Then you’re matched up with 6-2 guard Tanner McNutt, who can drive to the basket or spot up from 3-point range. And he’s even better on defense, Taylor said. “He really does a nice job with his onball pressure, and he shoots the ball well.” McNutt also earned allstate honors in 2011-12. Sprinkled throughout the roster is a collection of talent and experience. Senior point guard Nathan Whitcomb — the Cubs’ standout quarterback on the football field — also serves as a quarterback of sorts on the basketball court. “Nathan takes control of everything for us,” Taylor said. “He distributes the ball well, and he does a good job of getting us out on our break.” Senior guard Blake Crawford has a knack, Taylor said, “of always being in the right place at the right time. In addition, Sam Aguirre, a 6-3 transfer out of Yates Center, will become eligible in January, giving Humboldt another scoring threat. Younger players are emerging as well. Robbie Sellman, Justin Meins, Kason Siemens and Caleb D’Armond all have shown glimpses of pushing upperclassmen for playing time. They’re part of a junior varsity squad that went 17-3 in 2011-12. “Practices are so competitive,” Taylor said. “Those who push the other guys in practice are the ones who will get the playing time.” Humboldt opens the season Friday at Eureka.

Wildcat girls aim for successful year MORAN — A quartet of returning players will be key for Marmaton Valley High’s girls to see success in 201213, according to head coach Kent Houk. Judging from early practices, the results are encouraging. “They already look better in the past week than they did all last year,” Houk said. The Wildcats will look to improve on a 2-19 campaign from 2011-12. Leading the way will be 5-6 senior guard Kaylee Boyd, 5-8 junior forward Kaitlin Ensminger, 5-6 senior guard Kacie Shadden and 5-10 junior center Emily Meiwes. All saw plenty of playing time as underclassmen and are ready to assume larger roles on and off the court. “The girls know my system, and they see the floor better,” Houk said. “They know what I expect in practice and they hustle a lot.” The Wildcats will look to push the ball on offense, while deploying a man-toman defense to disrupt opposing offenses. A number of newcomers
will be counted on as well. Ashton Louk is a 5-5 junior guard who played sparingly in years past, but has improved and should see a larger role. Tessa Olson, a 5-5 sophomore guard, and 5-6 freshman center Mackenzie Tynon also warrant consideration for playing time, Houk said. The upcoming season will hinge on remaining focused as a team, Houk said. “Unselfish basketball is what you’d call it,” Houk said. Houk sees plenty of competition for superiority throughout the Three Rivers League. Oswego offers a multitude of quick guards and a number of incoming 6-footers who thrived at the middle school level. St. Paul also has a good coach “who gets the most out of his girls,” Houk said. “They’ll be tough.” Marmaton Valley opens the 2012-13 season Friday at Uniontown. The Wildcats host a preseason tournament the following week.

Wildcats look for defensive mindset on court MORAN — Athleticism and experience are certain to be hallmarks for Marmaton Valley High’s boys in 2012-13. But the key to the team’s success will be the Wildcat defense, said head coach Tim Stinnett. “Our offense will take care of itself,” said Stinnett, a 2007 Marmaton Valley graduate and multi-sport standout. “We need to take care of things on the defensive end.” Marmaton Valley is coming off a 7-14 season but has a stable of key veterans counted on to improve the team’s fortunes this year. “We’re going to push the ball as much as possible,” Stinnett said. “When that’s not there, we are going to look for good shots. We have a lot of good shooters and a few big guys who can bang down low.” The Wildcats will rely primarily on man-to-man defense.
Cole Becker, a 5-11 senior guard, will be counted on to score for the Wildcats. He’ll be joined on the perimeter by 5-8 junior point guard Chance Stevenson. Stevenson’s ball handling and distribution will be key, Stinnett said, in order to free up Becker as the off-guard, Stinnett said. Manning the inside will be 6-3 senior Nathan Smart and 6-2 senior Levi Ramsey. “Nathan’s a rebounder,” Stinnett said. “He’ll get lots of garbage points from offensive rebounds.” Ramsey’s style is similar, although he can be counted on for solid defensive play. 6-1 senior forward Lucas Hamlin also is a heady defender. “They’re both smart, tough players,” Stinnett said. Senior guard Ryan Smith, 5-11, also defends well and can be counted on to help steady the offense.

Lady Lancers hungry for another state run COLONY — Crest High’s girls had a roller coaster season in 2011-12. The Lady Lancers struggled with a 6-18 season, but got hot at the right moment to roll through the Class 1A Substate Tournament to advance to the state playoffs for the first time in team history. said. “Qualifying for state is a little more of a goal for the girls this season.” To do so, Crest will have plenty of fresh faces on the court, and on the sideline. Not only is this Vaughn’s first year coaching Crest, it’s his first year as a high school basketball coach. “The girls have worked extremely hard in practice, and we have some good all-around athletes,” Vaughn said. Crest returns only one starter. Senior post player Kurston Gilliland has proven a valuable commodity on and off the court, Vaughn said. “She’s a strong shooter, but more importantly, she’s a good leader,” Vaughn said. “We have a lot of older girls pushing each other and showing our younger players what’s expected of them.” Madison Covey and Madison Keller will share point guard duties. “They’re both good all-around athletes,”
Vaughn said. Crest has several promising athletes. “Our only issue is that they don’t have a lot of basketball experience athletically,” he said. For example, Vaughn expects senior Brytton Strickler — who is playing basketball for the first time this season — to contribute. Sophomore Emmalee Seabolt has shown flashes as well in practice. “She’s going to be a big part of our team.” Vaughn is instituting a motion offense for Crest. ‘We’re slowing it down at the start,” he said. “As the girls get more comfortable and start doing the little things right, we can start speeding things up from there. We just need to take it a step at a time.” The Lady Lancers host Southern Coffey County Thursday.

Talented core returns to lead Crest COLONY — A team “top heavy” with experience is certain to be the catalyst for Crest High’s boys effort to return to the Class 1A State Tournament in March. “We have lots of experience, but you’ll find we run into youth pretty quickly after that,” Lancer coach Travis Hermreck said. A cast of five returning lettermen will anchor the Lancers — 15-9 a year ago — in terms of performance and leadership. Senior guard Kyle Hammond, a four-year starter, handles much of the ball distribution from his forward position. The 6-2 senior averaged 22 points in 2011-12, while earning all Three Rivers League honors and honorable mention for the allstate team in Class 1A. “The great thing about Kyle is he is so unselfish,” Hermreck said. “He’s smart and he makes good passes inside.” Jordan Morton, 6-0 senior, mans the outside at guard. Hermreck praised Morton’s athleticism and grittiness, recalling a former Lancer standout in the process. “Jordan is probably one of the most mentally tough kids I’ve ever coached,” Hermreck said. “I consider him like a Todd Johnston, which if you know me, you know that’s quite a compliment.” Morton, too, earned allleague honors, averaging 13

“He had a great summer,” Hermreck said. “He’s going to take some people by surprise.” Ellis and Boone usually were good for between six and 10 points a game in 201112. Landon Stephens, a 5-10 junior, saw little varsity experience last year, but should make his mark this year, Hermreck said. “He’s

New coach stresses speed for Wildcat girls YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s girls squad features a number of athletic, speedy guards. First-year head coach Chris Wells’ job is to help the Wildcats utilize that speed. If they can, Yates Center stands to show a marked improvement from 2011-12, when Yates Center ended the season with a 5-16 mark. Conditioning has been a constant theme during the offseason and again in practices for the start of the 201213 campaign. While Wells is new to the school, he has plenty of returning pieces to work with. The Wildcats return all 10 primary contributors from last year’s squad. “They’ve got talent and speed,” Wells said. “What we need is for the girls to take advantage of that. We want to beat the other teams up and down the court, and then outlast them at the end of games.” Leading the charge will be 5-7 senior guard Emily
Baker. “Emily is a great ball handler, and an outstanding shooter,” Wells said. “She can get up and down the floor and really handles pressure well.” One of Baker’s primary targets on offense will be 6-0 junior Bailie Chambers. “Bailie has worked all summer and fall on her ball handling,” Well said. “I think she’s going to surprise some people with her improvement.” Also expected to play major roles in determining the Wildcats’ fortunes are seniors Paige Steinforth and Allie Bruner. “We’ve also got a large number of juniors who will fill out the rotation,” Wells said. The Wildcats will emphasize ball movement with their offense, while pressing opponents with their defense. “The girls ran a lot of 1-22 zone defenses, but I want to take advantage of their speed,” he said.

Much of Yates Center’s improvement will hinge on player confidence. “I don’t want a team where everybody is expecting only one or two players to handle the offense,” he said. “We’re getting everybody involved.” Wells comes to Yates Center from Southeast High of Cherokee, where he assisted with the boys squad. He knows little about any upcoming opponents in TriValley League action, aside from seeing several of Burlington’s players in a summer league. “They’ll be tough,” he said. After struggles, future looks bright for YC YATES CENTER — A young Yates Center High squad took its lumps on the basketball court in 2011-12 to the tune of a 1-20 season. But that squad of primarily sophomores and freshmen has a year of experience under its belt. Add a pair of transfers, including an all-state performer in Class 4A, and the Wildcats could see a steady climb to success. Overseeing the 2012-13 edition is veteran head coach Kevin Brown. While this is his first year at Yates Center, Brown brings a 25-year coaching pedigree to the Wildcats, including stints at Larned, Columbus and Sublette. “We have eight or nine kids who started at some
point last year,” Brown said. “We will be much improved in a hurry.” Leading the charge may be junior point guard Cameron Brown — coach Brown’s son — who starred at Sublette in 2011-12. Brown, at 6-2, averaged 13 points, five assists and five rebounds last year in earning Mid-Continent league honors. He also received honorable mention for the Class 4A all-state team by the Wichita Eagle. The second transfer, 5-8, junior wing Caleb DeNoon, starred last year at AltoonaMidway, scoring an average 11 points and six rebounds per game. He earned honorable mention for the Three Rivers League. The returning players have shown a willingness early on
to run a fast-paced offense capable of tiring defenses in a hurry, Brown said. “We have a solid group of players returning,” Coach Brown said. “They may have struggled last year, but they did very well over the summer.” Key returnees are Trevor Chism, a 5-8 wing player, and 6-3 junior post player Robert Arnold and 6-4 junior post player Myles Dice. The trio combined to score 10 points a game for the Wildcats. Sophomore combo-guard Justin Rossillon (5-9) averaged five points a game, as did junior wing and forward Austin McNett (5-10). “We’re going to play fast,” Brown said. “Our strength is going to be our passing, and our secondary break. With
essentially two point guards on the floor, we’ll be able to push the ball a lot.” Brown also praised his team’s work ethic, even after last year’s struggles. “The entire team stayed involved with summer ball, and they’ve practiced extremely hard,” he said. Brown is uncertain how Yates Center will fare in TriValley League. He’s certain Humboldt will be a powerhouse to contend with, as will Burlington. The Wildcats are the only Class 2A team in the league. “I like that,” he said. “We’re going to have a tough schedule from start to finish. Titans work to avoid 2011-12 struggles The 2012-13 Southern Coffey County High basketball roster will see plenty of fresh faces. The Titan boys, who struggled through a 1-18 season last year, have only two players with varsity experience on this year’s squad. “Half the team is new this year, including several freshmen,” SCC head coach Brandt Miller said. “It’s going to be key for us to get past the first part of the season as the team gets adjusted.” The Titans will rely upon the leadership of juniors Aaron True and Chism Newkirk. leadership from the point guard position. “Chism is a goofy and tough kid who handles the ball well,” Miller said. From there, a crop of newcomers is beginning to emerge. Senior Charles Patterson will look to be a contributor, either from the starting lineup, or as the first or second player off the bench, Miller said. “We don’t know if we’ll start him,” Miller said. “We do know he’s going to play a lot.” Angus Nelson, a junior, saw limited action last year and will be counted on to step up in varsity play this year. “He’s very capable and he’s grown a lot,” Miller said. “He can be somebody who can rebound and get inside points.” At 6 feet, Nelson is one of the tallest players on the team. Meanwhile, Tyler Houston will be counted upon with his shooting. “He’s got some work to do on defense, but he’s a good offensive player,” Miller said. And 6-foot Josiah Witteman may be the team’s most athletic player. “He’s pretty green, but he’s a good athlete,” Miller said. “He may score 15 points one night and go scoreless the next.” The Titans will open the season Thursday at Crest before heading the following week to Yates Center for the Wildcat Winter Classic. the way, along with Brice Aiello, Raymond Branstetter, Andrew Garber, Jordan Long and Cody Conner. “The guys have two options,” Carson said. “They can all compete against each other for spots at that weight, or some of them can bulk up to higher weight divisions, where they can wrestle at varsity meets all year long.” Both sides have their advantages: one fosters greater competition, while the other gives individual
wrestlers more experience through the year. The key to Iola’s success is the growing popularity of the sport among Iola Middle School students and the Allen County Mat Warriors program for youngsters, Carson said. “Like anything, the guys get better with repetition,” Carson said. Wrestling also proves beneficial for athletes in other sports, especially football. “Plus wrestling has been around as a sport longer than football has,” Carson
said. Carson is assisted by Ron Schomaker, former head wrestling coach at IMS. “He’s been invaluable,” Carson said. The wrestling team opens the 2012-13 campaign Thursday in Eureka. The squad also will host a clinic Dec. 4 to coincide with the opening of practices for the Mat Warriors. “It’s a great opportunity to introduce wrestling to kids who may not have been exposed to it before,” Carson said.

Lady Titans successful on, off the court LE ROY — A trio of returning starters who have sparkled on and off the basketball court will be looked upon to lead the way for Southern Coffey County High’s girls. Senior Sarah Webb and Junior Breanna Isch will provide much of the inside strength for the Lady Titans, head coach Jeff True said, while senior guard Martyna Hegwald will lead the perimeter attack. They are the centerpieces for a squad that went 9-11 last year with high hopes for improvement this season. Much of True’s enthusiasm came from the team’s more recent performance on the volleyball court, in which the Lady Titans qualified for the Class 1A state tournament.

“This basketball team was our volleyball team,” True said. “Our seniors will need to carry over their good work ethic from volleyball to basketball. They are good role models and leaders for the underclassmen.” Leading the way is the 5-11 Webb, who averaged 8.1 points and 7.5 rebounds a game last year, and the 6-foot Isch, who scored 6.7 points and pulled in 7.5 rebounds. Hegwald averaged 4.4 points in 2011-12. “Martyna will have to step into more of a scoring position for us from the perimeter,” True said. Chenae Newkirk (5-3) and Miranda Alumbaugh (5-7) both provided plenty of quality varsity play last season. Myranda Hegwald, a 5-7 senior, will fill a utility role of sorts. “She could be playing a number of positions, both on the inside and outside,” True said. Three sophomores, 5-11 Brittne Brite, 5-foot, and Lydia Brooks, 5-foot Connie Lyda, will be counted on as well, True said. One key element that should play in the Lady Titans’ favor is its smarts — as in good grades. “You take this whole group of girls and average out their grade-point average, and I bet you’re looking at 3.8 or above, with several 4.0 students,” True said. Staying healthy and working hard are the keys to SCC’s success, True continued. “Our goal is to get stronger and play as a team,” he said. “We want to compete every day in practice and in our games to improve with our ultimate goal of being ready for postseason play.
