SICARIO 2: SOLDADO

ART Wide Wild World… Some interesting art this month, beginning at UPSTAIRS gallery with work by local photographer OWEN HOPE. South Indian Culture [1], will feature a series of photographs taken whilst living and working in Southern India—namely Kochi and Chennai. These photographs powerfully convey some of the significant moments Owen experienced whilst living there, and the people he met during their daily lives. It runs from 28 MAY–29 JUN. It’s always worth pausing to check out the art at EDEN COURT and there’s a wide variety of stuff there in June. Wild Things by RYAN CONNELLY in the Stalls Gallery portrays some of the world’s most beautiful animals in acrylic from locations as diverse as the wild Highlands and the arid African plains, while BRIAN MUNRO’s Watercolour Landscapes display real talent from a man who only took up painting after retiring from a career in banking. Meanwhile, the FLOW gallery at EC continues its high standard with a collection by WILDFIRES called Somewhere Ahead I See You [2] in which three women explore what it is to be young. Their work both celebrates youth and touches on its darker moments. A heads-up too for Highland creative collective ILKA NORTH [3] who are curating a pop-up event at WILD GORSE STUDIO on Mealmarket Close running from the 22 Jun. Featuring the most exciting visual artists, makers and designers in the Highlands, the space will showcase the vibrancy and depth of creativity up here. As well as visitors being able to browse fantastic products and art pieces in a wonderful space, the Ilka North Pop-Up will feature live music, artist/maker talks and live painting with more activities to be announced nearer the time. BECOMING BELLANY, 27 May - 30 June, A public repainting of Bellany’s “Bonjour Professor Calne “ to mark the 30th anniversary of Bellany’s original. The work is significant as it documents Bellany’s recovery from a life saving liver transplant operation that heralds a lazaruslike personal renaissance. The 35 day project is the brainchild of Beauly artist Adrian Eaton who states; “The event is the culmination of my B.A.(hons) Painting course with the Open College of the Arts. Instead of a traditional degree exhibition, I felt that sharing the work that had been so influential in shaping the artist I’ve become would be a more satisfying and appropriate conclusion to both my studies and my engagement with Bellany.” Free to the public between 12-4 pm daily. With a focus on Citizen Science, this exhibition was created by Cromarty Courthouse Museum as part of a joint project with Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage Museum and the University of Aberdeen Lighthouse Field Station. Not So Fantastic Beasts? MAJOR NEW RELEASES It doesn’t seem to matter that, in your correspondent’s opinion, the whole ‘Jurassic’ franchise suffers from appalling animation (despite the plaudits), massive flaws of logic and a decreasing investment in talent in depth, everyone else seems to love ‘em and they sell, sell, sell—and I guess that’s why they’ll keep on a-makin’ them. In its previous outing, they even managed to make the ultralikeable CHRIS PRATT unlikeable. And still it sold. Chris is back in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM [1] (Vue 06 Jun; EC 22-28 Jun), along with BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD and a—shock!—returning cameo for JEFF GOLDBLUM, and we’re guessing more of those strangely weightless dino’s. It’s probably still all guff and you’ll probably all still love it. So, yay. Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 Sicario was a tense and shocking affair—the sequel, SICARIO 2: SOLDADO [3] (Vue 29 Jun) will be helmed by hard-hitting Italian director, Stefano Sollima, so whilst it may not have Villeneuve’s deft touch, the continuing involvement of writer Taylor Sheridan and stars Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, plus its adherence to an Icelandic-produced score (Hildur Guðnadóttir in place of the late Jóhann Jóhannsson) and heavyweight newcomers like Matthew Modine and Christine Keener, augres well. And whilst we’re getting darker, let’s go a little further with a supernatural horror from (the consistenly excellent) A24 that certainly has people talking. HEREDITARY [6] (Vue 15 Jun) features TONI COLLETTE, ALEX WOLFF, MILLY SHAPIRO, ANN DOWD and GABRIEL BYRNE in what some are calling the new Exorcist—only worse... yikes! On a lighter note (and we all need a lighter note), there is various faff, fluff and folderol available in the guises of OCEANS 8 [4] (Vue 22 Jun)—the first Oceans ‘sans Sodeberg’ but on the upside, an all-female affair, with SANDRA BULLOCK, CATE BLANCHETT, ANNE HATHAWAY, MINDY KALING, SARAH PAULSON, AWKWAFINA, RIHANNA, and HELENA BONHAM CARTER teaming up; more lady-centric entertainment in BOOK CLUB [2] (Vue 01 Jun & EC 15 Jun), in which DIANE KEATON, JANE FONDA, CANDICE BERGEN, and MARY STEENBURGEN discuss the pros and pros of Fifty Shades. Really; and, whether you thought you needed a sequel 17yrs after the original, you’re getting it—SUPER TROOPERS 2 [5] (Vue 15 Jun) explores more complex political issues around the US/Canadian border... EC FILMS As per usual, Eden Court have an eclectic mix of cinematic excellence on offer—you’ll find more detail on the centre pages, but allow us to point you out some highlights: REVENGE [9] (08–14 Jun) is a bold and stylish French horror—brave in these times to play with the rape & revenge trope despite giving it a feminist spin; About as opposite as you can get but still high on quality will be the live-theatre-onscreen of ROYAL BALLET: SWAN LAKE [10] (12 Jun); ZAMA [12] (15–21 Jun) is one of those almost indescribable movies—on the face of it, an Argentinian film about a remote South American colony of the Spanish empire, but actually a treat for the senses you deserve to enjoy; there’s two documentaries about protesting of sorts, the climate-change-challenging NOT WITHOUT US (17 Jun) and ERASE AND FORGET (24 Jun), an intruiging look at the life and times of Rambo-inspirer, Bo Gritz (look him up); There’s also RUPERT EVERETT as Oscar Wilde (also with COLIN FIRTH and EMILY WATSON) in THE HAPPY PRINCE [13] (29 Jun–05 Jul); three ace InFiFa WESTERNS [11] (12/26 Jun & 10 Jul) ; and BEAST [14] (29 Jun–02 Jul), a visceral Brit psychthriller with JESSIE BUCKLEY, JOHNNY FLYNN and GERALDINE JAMES.

KIDS Kids Play Now that Karen Gillan’s firmly ensconced into the Marvel Universe, it’s nailed on that her success is going to go even more stratospheric, particularly as she’s showing some pretty impressive directing chops too. She’s presumably an inspiration for many youngsters up here with hopes of making it as a performer and many of them are on show this month at EDEN COURT taking their first steps (exactly as Karen did) towards a world of possibilities. There’ll certainly be bags of enthusiasm at the PERFORMERS UK JUNIOR SHOWCASE on 02 JUN. Children performing include talented Saturday school members from the Yellow, Blue, White and Green Teams as well as the Junior Tricks & Tumble groups and RAD Ballet members, promising great entertainment for all. Also that day, the GAELIC YOUTH THEATRE FESTIVAL is on, while later in the month on 24 JUN there’s another extravaganza courtesy of TFX and their This Is Me show, featuring musical numbers from Broadway and the West End. If there aren’t jazz hands we’ll be sorely disappointed. Dance is equally well showcased, the highlight being the NORTH OF SCOTLAND YOUTH DANCE PLATFORM [1] on 07 JUN, where a wide variety of groups from across the Highlands are represented, Eden Court’s own classes joined by Plan B, Bodysurf and performers from Skye, Fortrose and Ullapool. A few days later, on 10 JUN at 2 & 4.30pm pupils from CAIRNGORM SCHOOL OF DANCE present their ONCE UPON A DREAM. The talented young performers take you on a journey of a young girl dream influenced by the books she has read, incorporating a variety of styles in their presentation. Yet more imaginative drama at the LAMDA SHOWCASE [2] (19 & 20 JUN) where, under the banner HIDDEN LIVES, young people from across the Highlands perform three plays. On 19 JUN it’s The Chrysalids by John Wyndham and Skellig by David Almond, then on WED 20 Ten Tiny Fingers, Nine Tiny Toes by Sue Townsend. Eden Court Musical Theatre’s INTO THE WOODS JR. (22 JUN) brings Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine’s skewed fairytale to local life, whilst WILLY WONDERS’ SPLENDID HOTEL on 04 JUN is a Roald Dahl homage created by the collective imaginations of the Intergrated Performance Group—taking its audience on a journey through a hotel full of magic, mystery and wonder. Prepare yourself to travel through floors of trees, elves and misnumbered rooms in a lift that moves sideways, backwards and in parambic motions. Finally, a hearty recommendation for the EDEN COURT COLLECTIVE NTS EXCHANGE HOMESHOW [3] on 25 JUN, leading up to the week long Exchange festival taking place in early July and showcasing a host of youth talent. Spoilt For Choice Music, music everywhere and not a penny to pay. That’s what you get at XPONORTH, returning on 27 & 28 JUN. As usual, the creative festival’s daytime talks, workshops and film screenings are just the warm-up for two nights of free gigs in just about every bar and music venue in town, with previous years having showcased many bands who’ve gone on to much bigger things. There’ll be over 60 acts on show this year including BREAKFAST MUFF [1], BE LIKE PABLO, TAMZENE, SPRING BREAK [3] and WOJTEK THE BEAR [2], so simply register at xponorth.co.uk and go on a bit of a musical binge. While XpoNorth goes from strength to strength, one long-standing Invernessian tradition is coming to a close. Locally born folk singer and guitarist of over 55 years, IAIN MACGILLIVRAY [10] is finally calling it a day and playing a Farewell Concert on SAT 23 JUN at the BEAUFORT HOTEL. Since 2003 Iain has played these Midsummer Gigs—usually as his duo (established in 1975) with Ranald Smith—but this final one will be solo. Since his very first folk group, ‘The Gypsies’ who won their heat at the local talent contest in 1964, Iain has been plying his trade all over the UK from Beverley to Baltasound and been involved in duos over the years with Dick Gaughan, the late Bobby Eaglesham, Chuck Fleming and ex ‘Corrie’ Bill Smith. We’re aure all those who’ve known and worked with him during the past half century will be keen to give him a fitting adieu. We salute you, sir. From the past to the future, more specifically FUTURE ISLANDS [4] at IRONWORKS on 12 JUN. The Baltimore synthpoppers are coming to the Highlands for the first time in the wake of a string of delightful songs and well over 1,000 gigs, so expect some well-honed delights. Even Future Islands haven’t got as much experience under their belts as BILLY OCEAN [6], who plays INVERNESS LEISURE on 24 JUN. And, admit it, even as you read that last sentence you’ve already got one of his numerous hits from the 70s and 80s burrowing inside your head. Goodness knows what the state of your noggin will be like after an entire show. What else? How about an entire day’s ‘festival’ of tribute bands at IRONWORKS on 30 JUN, with homages to AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Stone Roses, Oasis and more? The shindig goes under the niftily titled banner MOCKNESS. And just room for a few more recommendations in the form of Irish singer MARY DUFF [7] (EC, 21 JUN), SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA’s Summer Concert (EC, 15 JUN), DJ MALLORCA LEE (TOOTH & CLAW, 09 JUN), Strictly’s lead vocalist LANCE ELLINGTON [5] singing Broadway tunes (EC, 17 JUN), renowned traditional combo RURA [8] (UNIVERSAL HALL on 06 JUN, CEILIDH PLACE on 08 JUN and EC on 29 JUN), and the splendid CHRISTIAN GARRICK & THE BUDAPEST CAFE ORCHESTRA [9] (STRATHPEFFER PAVILION, 10 JUN).

As well as a host of bands (which you can read about in our Music section), there’ll be films, fashion, writing and more covered in the form of screenings, workshops and discussions at Eden Court and various other venues around the city centre. It’s free and open to everyone. All you have to do is register at xponorth.co.uk While XPONorth has become an established part of the year’s schedule, a rather older tradition is celebrated at the INVERNESS PROVINCIAL MÒD [1] taking place at EDEN COURT on the 15 & 16 JUN. There’ll be music, poems and songs in Gaelic from people of all ages, not just keeping an age-old culture alive, but celebrating its continuing strength in the 21st century thanks to a significant competitive representation by youngsters. Competition of a rather more boisterous kind at the BLACK ISLE SHOWGROUND on 02 JUN with the return of the popular IT’S A KNOCKOUT [2] in aid of Alzheimer Scotland. As with the famous TV show, this exciting event will feature games, inflatables, challenges and of course, lots of water. Now in its third year, the event has proved to be popular with work colleagues, groups of friends and other organisations coming together to challenge dementia and raise vital funds to support people living with the condition. Along with the North Coast 500, much of the recent surge in tourism up here has been credited to the Outlander books and TV series so expect plenty of fans of the show in attendance at the OUTLANDER DAY at the HIGHLAND FOLK MUSEUM on 09 JUN, its recreation of a 1700s Highland Township having been used as a filming location in the show. A couple more get togethers worth checking out are TRUCKNESS (BOGBAIN FARM, 02 JUN), featuring the largest collection yet of super-massive vehicles and the FISHERFOLK FESTIVAL, a celebration of the history and heritage of the Ross-shire Seaboard villages. Events include a special dinner on the Friday plus a street party, ceilidhs, music, food, art, workshops and more. Finally, at THE PAGODA in GRANTOWN ON SPEY, a highly topical talk by author DANIEL GRAY [3] on the 10th anniversary of the publication of his book HOMAGE TO CALEDONIA—an exploration of what drove so many ordinary Scots to fight in the Spanish Civil War, it inspired the STV Documentary ‘The Scots Who Fought Franco’.

It’s All About The Bike Last month’s Etape Rock Ness was a huge success with over 5,000 participants, splendid weather and impressive organisation that made it quite a spectacle for cyclists and spectators alike. That and the competitive season starting recently with the first Grand Tour of the year, the Giro D’Italia, will no doubt have inspired many to have a go at two-wheel events and there are plenty of opportunities this month to do just that. The most notable are the CAIRNGORM SPORTIVES on 16 JUN, held largely within the boundaries of the Cairngorms National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are two distances to suit your fitness and ambition, one of 82km and another a more gruelling 158km, the routes taking you from the heights of Cairngorm through the north of the Spey Valley, past several famous whisky distilleries, undulating through forest and moorland and then back up an alpine style climb finishing at the Cairngorm Ski Centre at 632m. Even more challenging since it involves running as well as cycling is the HIGHLAND CROSS on SAT 23 JUN, a 50-mile duathlon (20 miles on foot, 30 miles on bike) traversing the spectacular Scottish Highlands coast to coast, west to east from Kintail through Glen Affric and Strathglass to Beauly. Over the years it seems like just about everyone from Strictly… has turned up at Eden Court, something we entirely approve of. This month there’s not only the show’s lead singer LANCE ELLINGTON on 17 JUN (see p19), but two of its most loved professionals IAN WAITE & OTI MABUSE on 06 JUN, when they’ll not only be showing off their dancing skills, but also sharing stories about their careers and time on the programme.
The month kicks off with the highly impressive looking BALLET BLACK double bill on 04 JUN, the company celebrating dancers of black and Asian descent, showcasing technique, precision and 2 BALLET BLACK Eden Court, 04 Jun grace in specially commissioned pieces.

With new EDEN COURT boss James Mackenzie-Blackman firmly in place at the helm, the venue continues to deliver creative excellence and this month is no exception, the biggest attraction being the return of the INE NE ON LEITH Eden Court, 26–30 Jun acclaimed Proclaimers-inspired musical SUNSHINE ON LEITH from 26–30 JUN. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a funny, touching story of family, friendship and post-army life with, of course, some cracking songs.

Never A Dull Moment Aside from all that singing and dancing outlined on the previous spread, there’s plenty of top comedy at Eden Court again this month— as we’ve come to almost take for granted—with FRED MACAULAY on 03 JUN, the globally successful DANNY BHOY [2] on 07 JUN with a show understatedly titled Make Something Great Again for Stronger, Better Future Tomorrow Together, and the sharply dressed, well-spoken, disparagingly camp son of working class Bromley, TOM ALLEN [5] on 24 JUN (currently on your screens adding his pleasingly dry humour to Bake Off: The Professionals). A fairly late (but highly welcome) addition as we go to print is JONATHAN PIE: BACK TO THE STUDIO [1] on 13 JUN. The creation of actor Tom Walker, Pie is a world-weary political TV correspondent—you know, the ones always on outside broadcast in front of Westminster, thanklessly pitching unanswered questions to squirmy politicians in all weathers—and his act centres on what happens after the live broadcast, with Pie sounding off his real thoughts to his producer back in the studio, while the cameras still roll. Perfect for TV? You’d think so, but the risk-averse nature of our terrestrial stations has meant it’s been left to YouTube to break this act—accumulating millions of views and refreshing UK political comedy all the while. His stage show will allow him to break free from the ultra-condensed format required for online videos, so expect more outrage, exasperation, expletives and liberatingly cynical truth-telling. It’s not only Eden Court that’s the place to go for comedy, with FLORIANS THEATRE putting on a production of VICAR OF DIBLEY from 13–16 JUN, not only reminding everyone of just how well written it was, but also inducing a few tears remembering one of the stars of the original TV show, the recently departed Emma Chambers, who’s fan-fave character, Alice, is played here by SASHA DEVINE. Other cast name checks include LESLEY MACLEAN as Geraldine, SIMON LYALL as Hugo, RICHARD MIEMCZYK as David, TREVOR NICOL as Jim, MARTIN ANDERSON as Owen, ANNE BAMBOROUGH as Letitia and also JO GALLOWAY. A little less easy to define or pigeonhole are three mid-month shows: There’s inventive spectacle and alluring sounds from KARINE POLWART with her WIND RESISTANCE [4] at EC on 09 JUN. Inspired by the yearly migration of pink-footed geese from Iceland to Edinburgh, Polwart weaves everything from folklore to Scottish football history into a glorious multi-media mix of song and storytelling. Genre-defying.

DOWNS WITH LOVE (EC, 12 JUN) explores the subject of love and disability, challenging us to consider what we view to be “acceptable”. The play has been written around the performers and especially with ABI BRYDON, the central actor, the resulting work confidently transcending preconceptions and prejudice. Recommended. And another tricky subject is inventively addressed in EGG [3] at EC on 14 JUN. An original aerial theatre production from acclaimed circus company Paper Doll Militia it’s a powerful visual exploration of female fertility, sexuality and choice. Following the true story of a woman who gave her eggs to a friend to have a child, Egg promises a deeply personal and political journey highlighting themes of choice, chance, science and family. With occupancy geared so much towards tourism, this is the time when everyone’s off mistaking logs for Nessie, checking out places with the most tenuous of connections to Outlander and stocking up on shortbread, the hotels themselves becoming a haven of calm. Kingsmills Hotel on the edge of town is perhaps at its most alluring at this time of day, the bright spring sunshine filling its public spaces, particularly the handsome highceilinged lounge and spacious Conservatory Restaurant. It’s not just a fine space in which to relax, but also, it seems, for informal meetings to take place, as borne out by the presence in one corner of Caley Thistle boss John Robertson seemingly selling the prospect of the resurgent club to

no pimping with unnecessary flavourings. It’s advertised on the menu as being served with a caper vinaigrette and bread wafers, but neither element has made it to the plate. Instead there’s a scattering of salad leaves and some oatcakes, a simple and satisfying combination that works perfectly. My companion’s Goat Cheese and Beetroot Crispy Cake is an inventive vegetarian starter and equally proficiently prepared. Two slices of beetroot sandwich the cheese, the breadcrumbed and fried “cake” sitting on top of a small salad and decorated with a drizzle of balsamic glaze. A fine combination of sweet, salty and, courtesy of the beetroot, earthily vegetal, the cheese not too uncompromising in its flavour to overwhelm everything. And a nice combination of textures too. An unqualified success. Perhaps it’s because more and more of the hotel’s customers are shunning meat, or maybe merely that the chef is prepared to invest his dishes with a bit of imagination, but the vegetarian main course option is certainly boldly unusual. So my pal gets to eat Leek and Clotted Cream Tart, a creation that’s given the seal of approval after just one mouthful. Rustically presented within top-notch shortcrust pastry, it’s pronounced full of flavour, the luxurious clotted cream element working surprisingly well. The smoothest of mash, a selection of vegetables and a handful of watercress bring the whole thing together.

My main is Roasted Chicken Breast and again it’s beautifully plated. The meat sits on finely julienned vegetables and a flavour-packed red wine jus (proving conclusively that red wine and white meat DO go together) alongside the dinkiest potato gratin you ever did see,
the spuds sliced so thinly that the compressed block, while retaining its bite, has a lovely creaminess. The chicken is perhaps a tad overcooked, but it’s a good quality bird and tastes delightful. Putting quality over quantity remains the order of the day with my pudding. Cherry & Chocolate Gateau might suggest a massive hunk of cake, but instead the flavours of the Black Forest original are relocated to a beautifully layered little wonder that’s somewhere between sponge and jelly, providing just the right level of sweet flourish without obliterating everything that’s gone before. My pal’s Sticky Toffee Pudding is a rather more conventional example of the menu staple, but done very well and accompanied by a particularly impressive caramel sauce and top quality vanilla ice cream. Again, it’s not too heavy, meaning we get to come away from our meal without feeling either bloated or wiped out with sugar overload. A really very good lunch indeed then, in the most relaxing of surroundings. And extraordinarily good value. If there’s a better meal to be had in town at that price, we’ve yet to see it. Might not be one of the city’s best-kept secrets for long though. Price for 2: £31.00 (exc. drinks )
