The History of

Valentines Day

Legend suggests that Valentine’s Day was named after St. Valentine who was a priest during 270. He defied the Roman Emperor Claudius’s orders of banning marriage during the war, by secretly performing marriage ceremonies for couples. The Emperor had prohibited marriage for young men because bachelors were needed as soldiers for his army. St. Valentine is believed to have been put to death on 14 February and was later named a saint by Pope Gelasius, known to be the third and last Bishop of Rome. Valentine’s Day was announced by the pope to honour the saint for his bravery for refusal to renounce his religion.

SILVER LAKES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER JAN DE WET CEO

While some may look forward to a New Year as a new start on old habits, the Silver Lakes Homeowners Association is continuing with the positive financial and operational trends from last year and ensuring that these continue in 2015. On the golfing side, 2014 ended on a high note with a record number of 40 542 rounds played during the year, which was our busiest golfing year yet. Andre Vermeulen, one of our residents, was the 40 000th player for 2014 and received a commemorative golf shirt and a round of drinks for his four-ball to mark this occasion. While on golfing matters, the South African Amateur Championship, with its roots dating back to the Challenge Cup that was first competed for in 1893, will be hosted at the Silver Lakes Golf Club during March 2015. We are proud to display our beautiful estate and course for a prestigious event such as this; we are currently hard at work preparing the course to the specifications required by the organisers. The practice rounds will start on 28 February and the course will closed for the next week during which the 144 competitors battle it out. The Garden Group, who took over the upkeep of our estate’s gardens and common areas at the end of last year are settling in well, are already bringing in a fresh look and approach to the estate’s environmental aesthetics and management. I would lastly encourage residents to communicate with me should there be any issues you would like to bring

THE PROPERTY OWNER AND INVASIVE ALIEN PLANTS On 1 August 2014, the minister of Environmental affairs published the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations which came into effect on 1 October 2014. A list can be found at www. invasives.org.za/legislation.html. What is required of the property owner after 1 October 2014? There are 3 categories of species: • Category 1a species must be eradicated and the land owner has to allow an authorised official from the department to enter onto the land to monitor, assist or implement the combating or eradication of the species.

DANIE VAN NIEKERK ESTATE MANAGER

SWIMMING POOL SAFETY With summer here and with many of us venturing into the water to cool off and have fun, we need to remember that swimmingpool safety is of utmost importance at all times especially if there are small children in the house. Please be vigilant at all times. • Do not leave children at the swimming pool alone without proper supervision • Ensure the safety mechanism on the access gate is self-closing & self-locking • Ensure that the pool safety net is properly fitted when the pool is not in use

RAINFALL 2014 350 300

• Category 1b species must be controlled and the land owner must allow an authorised official from the Department to enter onto the land, to assist with or implement the control of the listed invasive species. • Category 2 species require the person in control of the species to be in possession of a permit to allow him to carry out a restrictive activity within an area specified in the notice, or area specified in the permit. No person may carry out a restrictive activity of category 2 invasive species without a permit. • Category 3 species are subject to the exemptions of Section 71. The fines and penalties for non-compliance with the regulations can attract a heavy fine and legal sanctions. The fines and penalties will only become applicable if the landowner refuses an authorised official from the Department to enter onto the land to monitor, assist or implement the combating; control or eradication of the species, or flatly refuses to comply with the regulations after due notice. How will the regulations affect the seller of a property? In terms of Regulation 29: 1. If a permit holder sells the property on which the alien listedinvasive species is under the permit holder’s control, the new owner of such a property must apply for a permit in terms of the Act.

Rainfall 2014

2. Prior to the conclusion of the sale agreement, the seller of any immovable property must notify the purchaser of that property in writing of the presence of listed invasive species on the property.

The estate agent should request sellers to confirm in writing whether they are aware of, or hold any permit in respect of any alien invasive species located on the property. If the seller confirms that they are aware of any alien species, or that he holds a permit, then the estate agent can give a copy of this confirmation to the prospective purchaser, in which event the offer should include an acknowledgement by the purchaser that they have been advised of the alien invasive species presence on the property. FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME For many South Africans we hear the anthem and watch the sport but do we know all the words to the nation’s national anthem. So for the fun of it, here it is. Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land. So next time the game comes on you have no excuse, sing it like no one is watching.

CONGRATULATIONS On behalf of the Silver Lakes Home Owners Association, we would like to congratulate all the learners on the Estate, especially the matriculates who successfully completed their year of study in 2014. We wish them all everything of the very best for 2015 and their future careers. To those who were not so fortunate last year, remember there is always another chance. Take note of the following important quotes:

“OUR GREATEST GLORY IS NOT IN NEVER FAILING, BUT IN RISING UP EVERY TIME WE FAIL.” ~ RALPH WALDO “SUCCESS IS NOT FINAL, FAILURE IS NOT FATAL. IT IS THE COURAGE THAT COUNTS.” ~ WINSTON CHURCHILL “FAILURE IS SIMPLY THE OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN AGAIN, THIS TIME MORE INTELLIGENTLY,” ~ HENRY FORD

GONE FISHING FISHING CLUB / HENGELKLUB

Dilano Girodo is a member of the Silver Lakes Fishing Club, who was recently awarded with Junior Protea Colours for Bass fishing. We met up with Dilano recently to gain some insight into his love of fishing. HvdW: Congratulations on your achievement Dilano. At what age did you start fishing, and with whom? DG: I started when I was about 4 years old, when my dad Carlo took me fishing. It was a fly fishing trip to Trout Hideaway. HvdW: What are your favourite memories from your early years of fishing? DG: Fishing with Uncle Greg and Fishy Pieter at Rivendale and also at Highland run, where I managed to catch a 1.5 kg brown trout. Apparently, I thought it was a marlin at the time. HvdW: You have done a lot of fishing, and employed different disciplines. What are your personal best catches for these different types of fish? DG: I have caught several big fish on fly, including a 15 kg barber “catfish” and recently on a visit to the Vaal River with wellknown fly angler and close friend Pieter Bezuidenhout, I caught carp of 13 kg and 8 kg, all on fly. I have also caught yellow fish and mudfish on fly in the Vaal River. My personal best Bass was a fish of 3.35 kg caught at Arabie dam, near Groblersdal during our Northern Divisional Jnr Competition 2014 HvdW: Do you often fish at Silver Lakes? Yes, and I have caught several carp weighing more than 4 kg here, and Bass and Kurper “bream”. I would really like to appeal to ALL that fish, or make use of our dams to remember to keep the dams and surrounds clean. We are privileged to have the facility, let’s look after them. HvdW: You have been awarded Junior Protea colours for bass fishing. How does one achieve that? DG: You have to be registered as a member of a club, affiliated to SABAA (SA Bass Angling Association), and then you enter the provincial competitions. If you do well, you qualify to represent your province at the National South African Championships. At the National Championship, I finished in the top 13 and was selected as a member of the Junior Protea team to compete against Zimbabwe at Claw Dam in Zimbabwe in December 2014. HvdW: Do you have a “Wish list” of places that you would like to visit and to fish? DG: Yes, absolutely! I would love to fish the Seychelles and the Amazon River. I think it would be awesome to be a competitor in the American Bass Elite Series. More images to follow in the March issue.

CORLIA MATHEWS

ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS TRUSTEE

ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN FOR 2015 A new year has started and we are ready for the new challenges. As you know, nothing is cast in stone and we are open to suggestions from our homeowners. Some of the developments, suggestions, and ideas for the estate for this year, I will explain in this article, but as the year progress I will keep you updated of the progress. As you all would know, we are becoming part of a greater Pretoria East development, which will be kicking off in the near future.

The Hazeldean Times and other newspapers have being publishing articles about these developments. If you want to find out more speak to Danie van Niekerk at our Estate Offices, or Google Abland Hazeldean developments. Danie stays abreast with developments around us. Please, if you need anything phone Danie at 012 809 0142 or even myself on 083 448 9441. If I can help I will gladly do so, otherwise I will find out! On the map, you will see Silver Lakes’ game reserve dam on the top left, south of the N4. The new intersection with the N4 highway will be under construction in the next 2 years, with large-

tain in Gleneagles, which forms an integral part of this gate, will also be included, as well as the gardens of Pebble Beach Drive.

scale developments of malls, offices, and hospitals. Our previously rural area when Silver Lakes started out more than 21 years ago is developing into a full-scale city centre! On the garden and game reserve side, we will be continuing with the tidying up of the Estate: - remove the 97 original rose corners to unify the design and erect new signage architecturally designed to match other buildings on the Estate. Including some new roses for these corners; - revamp both the entrances; - take control of the sidewalks to unify the look-and-feel of a ‘welcoming’ estate; - in the game reserve we will continue with the removal of all obstructions to the game roaming freely – not only around the dam which is now built up and we need right-of-way for our game to move fast if necessary around the dam and in the game reserve - without obstructions and fencing in their path ways. The unnecessary roads criss-crossing the grassland area will also be scarified and seeded. De-weeding will also be a priority. All of this is important for the wellbeing of our game. Expanding the diversity of our types of game is also on the cards. Architecturally a lot will also be happening: - we will finally be building the new gate at the Silver Lakes drive entrance. Cover for those rainy and extremely hot days….tidying up the entrances so that we can be proud of our Estate; - the gate at Solomon Mahlangu drive will be revamped and the signage put back in place; - corner structures will be designed and erected to make sense of our street name and numbers as well as to the to unify the architectural and environmental theme of Silver Lakes; - the biggest building project will be starting January through to the major activities in March/April of this year – adding on to the Club, and for example moving the gas utilities to a central position, air conditioner replacements etc.; - So…with all of these we ask that you please be patient. Know that by the end of the year we will have an Estate in which we can relax and enjoy even more tranquillity and peace of mind than before; with world class facilities and ‘our own piece of heaven.’

This leads us to the Clubhouse, which will be the site for extensive rebuilding from March after major golf events on the Estate through to early summer in August/September of 2015. A new kiosk-cum-halfway house will be built at the swimming pool, with extra golf cart parking. The long awaited ramp and starter box will also be built for the golfers at the same time. This will include a set of stairs that will lead from the patio to the pool area, with planter boxes screening the patio for privacy. We will enlarge the swimming pool area, as well as make access from the kitchen to these areas easier. The restaurant will be revamped and rebuilt. Solid structure will replace the wooden decking and temporary canvas roofs. This will also extend the top patio for the convenience of golfers for their relaxation after their games of golf. A new entrance to the restaurant area will be developed through the old Pro Shop, with retail areas both sides of the entrance throughway. Covered walkways will ensure that wet weather will not hinder patrons to the restaurant. Included in this development will be the extension and re-development of the caddie and golf cart service area. Some golf cart parking will be made available on both sides of the new entrance and to the side where the new short game facility is. The full architectural drawings of this can be seen on page 17. Another fantastic bonus of which I am most excited is the new children’s play area that we will be developing next to the restaurant where the golf cart parking is at the moment, spilling over onto the existing 1st t-box. This t-box will be replaced with a new first t-box closer to the driving range.

In the two plans in this article on page 17, you will be able to see the new developments. The implementation of these plans will commence in March/April of this year. With this in mind, we will be relocating some of the services at the Club from time to time to accommodate the building process, but at the end of 2015, we will have a new restaurant, a more child friendly and a fantastic new experience at Silver Lakes. One of the main developments I am sure our ladies golfers and restaurant patrons will be very pleased about, will be the revamping of the men’s and ladies change rooms. The ladies will have the biggest ‘face lift’ as you will see in the images on page 16. It will also be enlarged so that we have more showers and space in the ladies change rooms. Enjoy 2015 – hope to see you all at our Social Events and at the newly revamped club during the year…..join us for fun while they are building! Have a fantastic last few summer months.

The architectural drawings above are of the new Silver Lakes drive gate, which will be constructed in 2015. The whole look and feel of the gate, in and outside the Estate will be upgraded. The foun-

THE REVAMPING OF THE MEN’S AND LADIES CHANGE ROOMS

INTRA MUROS FEB 2015 (17) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

The Darling Days of December CHRISTMAS IN SILVER LAKES Koos Marais It comes suddenly, a morning, gilded by the glitter and glitz of an early dawn, heralding the advent of the beginning of the end of the year. It is December. The rush and the madness of November are gone. Silver Lakes, our home, takes a deep breath. We see the contractors moving out and residents loading mountain bikes and jet-skis onto bike racks and trailers. Laughing children pour into the backs of vehicles packed to the roofs, ready for the journeys to their coastal vacation places. Every day the calm intensifies until one can sense, taste and smell it. The peace becomes palpable. One becomes aware of the harmonious chirps of the crested barbets, echoing throughout the estate, with the duets of their cousins, the red-collared barbets, in the background. The leafy streets are empty and resplendent in their green coats, like lanes in London’s Hyde Park. The sorcery of the early morning in its glowing, windless, and golden syrupy, tranquility builds up to a noon, white, hot and dry, with only a red-chested cuckoo calling, “piet-my-vrou, pietmy-vrou”, reminding me of an earlier age, of Christmas on a farm, with a green slimy dam as the only source of relief against the scorching heat.

Then the great white cauliflowers begin to emboss the skyline. Cumulonimbus clouds grow ominously, almost as by cue, in tune to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture, the cool wind exhales into one’s face, nature’s force erupts, explodes, like the cannon shots, leaving the green grass and the blue lakes glistening in the calm, honeyed glow of dusk. The aftermath of the thunderstorm begs one to light a small fire, or a few candles, to sip a glass of Pinot Noir, to sit back and marvel at, and enjoy, the miracle that is Silver Lakes in December. Perhaps if you are fortunate you will see a paradise flycatcher, dancing in the last rays of the sun, or a pied kingfisher hovering over one of the dams, eagerly seeking its dinner. Or perhaps you will take a leisurely drive through the game reserve to look for the newborn impala, springbok or blesbok. You may be stopped by the grandeur of one of the proud kudu or nyala bulls, tame and magnificent in their regal splendour. You will sense that you are in one of the best places in South Africa. The tranquility of your home, the freedom, the safety of your environment will conspire to daze you with the beauty of creation. December is a time when one can reflect on the past, and to consolidate the tears and the laughter of the year that was, to create

the dreams of tomorrow’s world. More than anything though, is it a time to live and see the present. It is the time to really see, listen, feel, and smell. It is the time when one can truely become aware. There is no need to perform and to rush. If one is willing to take the “risk” of staying “behind” in Silver Lakes one will be rewarded by the prize of awareness. Of becoming one with nature, seeing things as they are, framed by the grace of the Creator. The sense of peace, the real spirit of Christmas, will enfold you in the caress of its soft embrace. The irony is that many hardworking residents miss these balmy Silver Lakes days, because they are away, spending large amounts of money, in crowded places, festooned in eternal furies of coastal winds, while our estate breathes a pleasant sigh of relief and rejuvenation, and rejoices in this, the calmest time of the year, with our gardens in their greenest and most colourful ball gown dresses. One of the most satisfying things one can do, when one has the time, during an extended holiday in Silver Lakes, is to take a camping chair and to go and sit somewhere in the game reserve and wait for the birds to appear. Silver Lakes is home to 172 recorded species of birds and we are fortunate to have a mix of garden, wading, bushveld and marshland birds. There is a treasure trove of

enjoyment, education, enlightenment and ethereal peace, waiting to be discovered by the patient bird watcher and nature lover, right here, on our doorstep, at no cost. I have learnt that we tend to walk right past the most magnificent sights, because we simply do not make the effort to slow down, to reflect, and to open our eyes to really see what a beautiful world we live in. Only by really looking, do we discover the true beauty of things. God is in the details, in the small things. December offers us more than time to be quiet. It is also a time to renew relationships in afternoons or evenings filled with lazy conversations, easy meals, cool wine and soft music. The days are slow and the pace is at crawling level. We have the time to listen to each other, to laugh, and even to cry a little. There is no rush to get to the next meeting, or the next appointment, or the next party. It is the time when one can exchange profound views with a friend, taking enough time to formulate and express one’s feelings, opinions and deepest emotions. It is how we were meant to live. Many fear the silence, the quiet, and the loneliness. Perhaps they fear to be confronted by themselves, but to spend an entire month in the solitude and the solace of these warm, balmy, darling, days of December, in Silver Lakes, is an experience my family and I treasure deeply.

SILVER LAKES MATURE GOLFERS NEWS FROM THE MATURE GOLFERS GROUP PLAYING AT SILVER LAKES GOLF COURSE

MATURE GOLFERS

We had an extremely successful and enjoyable annual golf day on 20 November. A special thanks to all our wonderful and generous sponsors who we will name in the next newsletter. Also thank you to all the golfers, both the ladies and the gentlemen, who shared the golf day with the Mature Golfers. We had a full field of 120 players and half the field went home with a prize. The first prize value was in excess of R2500. Congratulations to all the winners with a special mention to Paul Laesecke who won the first prize for the day with individual stable ford points of 37. The ladies winner was Bernice Hendriks on 36. Prizes were also handed out to those Mature Golfers who won the various competitions held during the year. Of particular note was our singles knock out champion for the year, Andre Meij. The photographs reveal some of the proceedings during the Golf Day dinner and prize giving. Please note that the Mature Golfers play every Thursday morning at Silver Lakes and all senior male golfers are welcome to join the group at 06:45 for the draw---just phone the Pro Shop early in the week to add your name to the list. Looking forward to another great golfing year, Theo O’Neil - Captain of the Mature Golfers

Buddleja species produce beautiful sweet smelling flowers that attract butterflies and will provide food even during winter months.

THE GARDEN GROUP Elize Malan

ATTRACTING BIRDS TO YOUR GARDEN A variety of birds will visit your garden, if you cater for their different diets. We have seed eating birds, fruit eaters, insectivorous birds, nectar feeders and of course quite a few opportunistic cross feeders that will eat whatever is available. There seems to be some controversy about feeding wild birds. Some people feel wild birds should forage for themselves, while others will go to great lengths to provide food on a feeding table on a daily basis. Creating a garden environment that produces seed, flowers and fruit for birds to enjoy, will provide them with food throughout the year, and allow natural foraging. Although all bird lovers would like to have a “wildlife garden”, limited space and a need for tidy well manicured gardens, do present a challenge. When we think of birds, we usually associate them with our treetops. This would be a good place to start. Plant a few well selected varieties and you will have shade, food and shelter for an astonishing amount of birds. TREES FOR BIRD LOVERS Rhamnus prinoides (Dogwood): The small greenish flowers appear between November and January. The flowers attract bees and insects and these are a food source for insectivorous birds. The pea-sized purple fruit will attract birds like Starlings, Bulbuls and Barbets to your garden. Celtis Africana (White Stinkwood): Flowers appear in spring and attract insects as a food source for birds. These are followed by small round yellow fruit much enjoyed by Rock Pigeons, Thick-billed Weavers, and other fruit eaters. Larvae of at least three different butterflies feed on the leaves of the tree, creating a constant food supply throughout summer.

Although not seen as very impressive or important to gardeners, grass and especially indigenous wild grass is essential to attract seed eating birds to the garden. Wild grasses tend to get untidy and are often cut before the seed ripens. By doing this the natural reproduction is inhibited (less grass next season) and the food source destroyed. Most grasses will withstand light shading, but it will increase their height and reduce flowering. GRASSES AND RESTIO FOR BIRD LOVERS Eragrostis capensis Perennial and flowers from September until May. Pennisetum macrourum Perennial and flower from November until May. Andropogon chinensis. Flowers from December until June. Restio varieties Elegia capensis High water requirement and flowers from October to November. Tahmnochortus cinereus Needs water during dry winter months and flowers in May and June. Rhodocoma capensis Medium water requirement and flowers from September until November. Now pore yourself a drink, sit back, clean the binoculars and enjoy the bird life in your garden! Garden tip Windows, especially large sliding doors, are responsible for injuries and death when birds accidentally fly into them. Put on some attractive stickers to help alert birds (and human visitors) that there’s a barrier.

• If you require any help with a design of your pool area or complete garden revamp please call our Office for a Landscaper to assist you. 012 804 1807 / 1581 Elize Malan Horticulturist

Fruit Trees: These exotics are a feast for birds and usually the owner is not amused by the damage caused to the fruit harvest. Unfortunately, for the home owner, fruit trees have to be covered at certain times to prevent a total loss of fruit. Shrubs in our gardens are often pruned on top and cleaned at soil level. This tends to produce a sterile environment detrimental to bird life. SHRUBS FOR BIRD LOVERS Plumbago as a hedge is pruned and shaped before the sticky blue flowers can be enjoyed by nectar loving birds. Duranta left to grow as a bush will develop bunches of yellow berries for fruit eaters. INTRA MUROS FEB 2015 (25) DESIGNED BY

Golf course

maintenance

by Andrew McKenna

This is the first of the newsletters for 2015 so can I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New year and I hope it is a great year at the club. As you are all aware we are going through some extensive work on the golf course. It is normal and essential that a hollow tinning process occurs twice a year on a golf course. If we do not do it we risk a deterioration in the condition of the course. On the contrary we need to take the course forward and not stand still, our greens are over 20 years old now and like any living thing they have a life span, we therefore need to continually introduce new grasses to our greens annually to avoid the need to completely replace our greens one day. We are in a very fortunate position here at Silver Lakes as we are the only green keeping/golf course managers training establishment in Africa and we have tremendously valuable contacts in the industry to call on for specific technical advise for our course.

The sowing happened on Thursday 8th January after the hollow tinning was complete. My feeling is that in our climate in January, and the high soil temperatures, will encourage a speedy germination so we should see germination now. We have been strongly recommended to keep ALL traffic off the seeded greens for 14 days from sowing which will take us to the 23rd January. We will then not mow the greens for a further 7 days which will take us until January 30th. It is now our dilemma whether to stretch the temporary greens spell until the 30th until we can deliver proper playing surfaces to you, our members in the best possible condition. I am very appreciative of the understanding with this and will do everything we can to get our golf course to a better than ever condition.

Recently we had the leading grass specialist from Europe here to chat to us about how to handle the challenges we face on our course in our climate. It has been well documented that a new strain of bent grass has been cultivated called Alpha or T1. It has Poa combatant qualities and we have now gone through the process of seeding the new chipping green with it and over seeded all of our greens. The strong recommendation from Europe is that we do not walk on the new seedlings for 2 weeks at least. From the date of sowing of the seed it takes 5-7 days to germinate.

We have reciprocity lined up with the following courses for the duration of the working period on the greens: Woodhill, Centurion, Ebotse, Copperleaf, Pretoria Country Club, Irene, Wingate, Zebula and Elements. Please make the most of these wonderful facilities. The bridge on the 18th is being finalised in the next few days, there was time pressures that got the better of us in December and the closing of the building industry caused a 4 week standstill of the bridge construction and we are hoping to have it open by the 23rd in line with the greens re opening. We will then halt the building of the remaining bridges until after the club championships and the SA amateur championships being held in March.

Two further points;

Please remember to renew your membership before 15th January to ensure you are entitled to the free vouchers relevant for your membership category. Secondly if you own a golf cart please make sure you register it for 2015 in the pro shop. The stickers are ready and need to be collected before the end of January. As per the rules of Silver Lakes Golf Estate HOA all golf carts need to be registered annually. The fee this year will be R160 and is payable in the pro shop. Otherwise we can add it to your levy account if that is more convenient for you.

Thanks againand

nce for your patie happy 2015 to support and a everyone.

THE COOK ON THE CORNER From Seline van der Wat The new year is already in full swing and the month of love is upon us! I have historically not ever celebrated Valentine’s Day, but I must say that the idea of spoiling the person that you love, and taking advantage of the ONE day in the year on which you may be annoyingly corny, is really appealing to me now that I have a fiancé. Yes, Valentine’s Day is a great international marketing tool and money-making scheme, but surely that special person in your life is worth the time, energy, effort and corniness? I remember when I was a little girl my mom would always hide Valentine’s Day treats in our school or sports bags before we went to school. Finding a little note attached to a heart-shaped lollipop, box of chocolates or a little pink rose in the middle of your mathematics class was so precious. I would always get so excited and feel so special, regardless of the size or worth of the gift. I have come to love the gifts that take time and effort instead of those that require money. Sure a necklace is fine, but what’s more valuable to me is spending precious time with the people closest to me, especially your husband/partner/ boyfriend. As a result, I spoil my better half with sweet treats and three course meals, tailored around our favourite food memories or our favourite foods. These meals are hours that I treasure and that I’m sure I’ll remember for the rest of my life; after all, it’s been scientifically proven that we attach memories and feelings to tastes and smells. Why not spoil yourself and your loved one this month? Sure it’s commercialised and may seem silly, but it will make your partner’s heart giddy and will also score you some serious brownie points – and who doesn’t like that? The recipe that follows is one of my “go to recipes” for when I need to impress guests or score some points with my fiancé! The molten chocolate centre is warm, delicious and sensual and is the perfect way to end a romantic evening with your loved one. These fondants are decadent by themselves but are also great when served alongside ice cream or some fresh berries. May this recipe bring you lots of luck in love this February!

Instead, why not turn the tradition around and spend that time and energy reconnecting with your family, kids & loved ones this February. Fill the sugar-water paste into the heart shaped ice cube trays, about halfway full, and press tight into the mold. Let them dry overnight and then carefully remove the sugar cube from the tray. Enjoy! This will definitely spruce up the way you serve your guests their tea this Valentine’s!

Red lips are sexy, passionate and va-va-voom!!

LOVE -ly RED LIPS By Michelle van Zyl from Make-up by Michelle

INTRA MUROS FEB 2015 (38) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT RED LIPS With February being the month of love and red being the colour of love, this is the perfect time to wear that daring red lip colour you’ve always wanted to try but have been too scared to do!

My favourite type of red lipstick is the matt/ opaque ones with high pigment content, as its wears much longer. I prefer to use a deeper red for someone with a lighter skin tone and a slightly brighter red for a darker/olive skin tone, but play around and see which tone of red would look best on you. It should, amongst others, suit your personal style, hair colour and eye colour. • The ideal is to have well moisturised lips as your colour will last longer and look better, but not all is lost if you have dry lips. Most people don’t know that dry lips are better disguised with darker colours, like red, than with nude colours (almost skin-tone colours). • Line your natural lip line with a nude lip pencil, as this will help to avoid your lipstick bleeding into the small creases around the lip area. • Using your favourite red lipstick and a lipstick brush (I prefer to use a synthetic brush that is small, flat and firm with round tapered bristles), first draw your lip line. Be precise and make sure your lines are perfect. This part will take you the longest but will make or break your look. • Then fill in the rest of your lips by either using your brush or the actual lipstick. • If your line is slightly skewed, fix it by using a tiny bit of foundation or concealer on a clean brush (same type of brush as mentioned above). Use short strokes and be sure to wipe off your brush (on a tissue) in-between strokes, otherwise you’ll end up with a cerise pink outline…not the desired look we are aiming for!

When you wear red lipstick you want all the attention to be drawn to your lips, therefore you want to keep the rest of your face neutral and natural. • For the eyes – apply a matt eye shadow on the eye lids, using colours like beige, caramel or a very light brown. Apply a few layers of mascara. Apply a thin line of eyeliner, softening it with a brush or the tip of your finger. • For the cheeks – create soft rosy cheeks by using the same red lipstick that you will be using on your lips, dabbing and blending some on your cheeks by using your fingertips.

Make-up by Michelle Michelle van Zyl • Tel: 082 302 0287 Email: info@make-upbymichelle.co.za Web: www.make-upbymichelle.co.za

When you go shopping for a red lipstick, take your best friend with you as she will honestly tell you if that red tint works on you - or not! The big trick with applying red lipstick is to spend some time on the initial application. Here is how to perfect it!

• To make your lipstick last longer, pinch a tissue (one-ply) between your lips, reapply lipstick and repeat the process two to three times. • To make your lips appear fuller, you can highlight the outside of the lip line, with attention to the cupid’s-bow, using a lighter foundation or concealer. • Another tip for fuller looking lips is to dab a little bit of your highlighting-powder to the centre of your lips, using your finger. • If you use a matt/opaque lipstick, you can wear it as is (not recommended if your lips are dry) or apply lip gloss for some shine. If you want a bit of sparkle, you can apply a lip gloss with some shimmer . • Finally, to avoid getting lipstick on your teeth, put your finger in your mouth, close your lips and pull out your finger. This should remove the excess colour from the inner edges of your lips.

And voila! Perfect, full, red valentine lips…Mwah!

of the seamen sleeping in his bunk. The seaman named Lofty, was not only the second largest, after Seaman Clark, but had a scary temper on him!

KIDS STORY

- Just Nuisance -

So, you can just imagine Just Nuisance walking up to his bunk, finding a seaman in his bed. He nudged Lofty to get out but all the seaman did was roll over and sleep on, nudging Just Nuisance’s cap off his head. Snoring on. Just Nuisance got hold of the blanket between his teeth and pulled it off. Lofty woke up and stated lashing out with his fists. Obviously a bit drunk form his own night out on the town, the reason he was in Just Nuisances bed in the first place! The other seamen heard the commotion and flicked on the lights. When the bunk’s intruder saw Just Nuisance looming over him he let go with a torrent of swearwords, all aimed at the dog and grabbed the blanket back, pulled it over him and lay down again. Just Nuisance took it again and pulled it off. When rating Lofty started flailing his fists in front of Just Nuisance’s black snout, the large Great Dane got onto his hind legs and pushed the seaman onto his back with his front paws. His enormous mouth with its large teeth looming just short of the seaman’s throat, maybe Just Nuisance never had the intention to bite him, just warn him off? We will never know. The whole hut was silent except for a low growl, waiting, but then three seamen got Just Nuisance off the white as a sheet Lofty and one got Lofty out of Just Nuisance’s bed. Lofty was as white as a sheet when he went to his own bunk. Just Nuisance got into bed, with his cap on his pillow and calm was restored in the hut. Lofty slowly got off his bed and walked to Just Nuisance’s bunk extending a hand of apology. The dog watched the seaman approach with a squinted eye and then put out his paw to be shaken in apology. All went back to bed for a restful night. The next day when Leading seaman Clark got back from his shore leave Lofty got the scolding of his life because if they though about it – if Just Nuisance bite the seaman and possibly killed him because he is such a large dog, he would have had to be put down and none of the seamen could have handled that!! Just Nuisance never bit anybody, possibly only held onto them if he wanted them near to him or wanted to show them something. Only one other time did he scare the daylights out of another soldier. It was when they were all in Cape Town on shore leave and stayed over the night. They stayed in the Union Jack Club where Just Nuisance had a regular bed. He found a sailor in this bed that was reserved for him.

Images above - Just Nuisance asleep in his bunk, cap ready for the morning . . . and look at his size!! First things first : To all our Silver Lakes kids : From Just Nuisance and myself, I hope all the Silver Lakes children have a fantastic 2015 and that school, the holidays and just being in Silver Lakes will be fun and have a lot of surprises!! From sources I have it that Just Nuisance was very fond of children, and they of him. They were never frightened of him and he never felt threatened by them, but I have 2 stories of guys who were frightened of Just Nuisance just because they slept in his bed by accident. The one incident was at his own hut at Froggy Pond where they were stationed. The Leading Seaman Clark who was the master of the hut was still away in Cape Town when the incident happened. Maybe then it would not have gone as it did? But none the less. Just Nuisance got back from a night on the town in Cape Town, you will remember from last year that he has a free ticket on the train from Cape Town, he got home to Froggy Pond to find one

He tried in vain to roll the seaman out of bed with a paw but the seaman was too fat! When one of the other ratings that stayed with him remarked that he, Just Nuisance, would have to sleep on the floor. Just Nuisance took one look at the situation and got into bed with the fat sailor. As time went on he moved the fat sailor to the edge of the bed until he fell out with a big thud after about an hour of nudging by the big Great Dane and was left to sleep on the floor! The sailor grunted, snored and fell asleep on the floor. The Dog yawned and slept soundly in his bed. Until the next morning when Just Nuisance, ready to leave by train for Froggy Pond, licked the sailor to tie his hat for him as they were bed mates of a sort now. The sailor woke up with a dog licking his face and realised he slept on the floor! He stomped out of the room to go and complain to management that a dog shoved him out of bed! Obviously it helped nothing! To all our Silver Lakes kids – have a wonderful first term and enjoy school. See you all at the Silver Lakes events!! LOCK YOUR LOVE AWAY WHAT YOU NEED: Card stock paper Glue Sticky tape Scissors Tissue paper Glitter paper or any pretty Scrap paper lying around

STEPS: 1.To make the base of the heart piñata, cut out two heart shapes from the card stock paper. This article’s piñata is about 10 cm high and 15 cm wide. Then cut two strips of cardboard about 3 cm wide. The length is determined by measuring the radius of your heart cut out. Form the heart by gluing the sides of the strips along the heart. At this point, just before you glue the other heart onto the base, fill the piñata with your choice of ‘Baci Perugina’ inspired chocolates. 2. Now comes the fun part! Cut out strips of tissue paper about 5 cm in width. To make the process faster, fold the strip in half and begin cutting very thin strips to about 1 cm of the edge. Starting at the bottom of the piñata, glue the strips of tissue paper tassels one strip at a time. Make sure to work your way up, overlapping each strip on top of the previous strip. Cover the edges of the piñata with a few layers of tissue paper strips and trim the edges.

for your Valentine Throughout Italy the tradition of locking padlocks to bridges, railings and lampposts can been seen. The action is practiced by millions of young couples who tie a padlock around a lamppost and inscribe their names on it, lock it and throw the key into a nearby river, believing that this will keep them together forever. Our Valentine DIY is a modern take on this tradition, as well as the Italianinspired Valentine sweet gift, the ‘Baci Perugina’, a chocolate-covered hazelnut. We will be putting similar hazelnut chocolates in our piñatas to give our ‘love padlocks’ an Italian twist this Valentines Day.

3. To finish it off, cut a small slit in the fold where the two halves of the heart meet. Fold a piece of ribbon in half and tie it together with a big knot at the end. Take the knot and push it through to create a hanger for your heart piñata gift.

Do not stuff everything into cupboards Many potential buyers like to open cupboards to get a sense of storage space. Move spare furniture out However, do not turn rooms into barren spaces. Define each living space Make sure each room is kitted out for the purpose it was intended - buyers will be better able to conceptualise a room’s purpose. Do basic repairs Go through each room and do any minor alterations you can see would at little expense improve the finish. Clean the property Make sure every room is spotless, particularly bathrooms, kitchens and carpets. Do not spend money on expensive improvements The idea is to rapidly and inexpensively make your property more appealing.
