Founder Mark Dykes is the entrepreneur and mastermind behind the In the Game vision. Back in 2007, Mark set out to create a company that captured the passion, intensity, and unrivaled commitment toward high school athletics in the South Georgia area. Today, that vision has become a reality, and he continues to be the leading influence in what lies ahead for In the Game, despite his annual prediction that UGA will win the National Championship.
As a Pine Mountain, Georgia, native, Mandy’s move to Valdosta has brought enhanced artistry and intricacy to the ITG design team. The University of West Georgia alum graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in art with a concentration in graphic design. Her artistic nature has allowed her to use graphic design to win national and international design competitions, all of which are meant to serve as diversions and coping mechanisms for Alabama’s loss in the National Championship.
Anna became a member of the ITG Next team in 2016, serving as an intern for three semesters. After graduating from Valdosta State University in 2017, she remained with the team as an editor, devoting her editorial eye to the company for two years before becoming the Director of Operations. In her free time, Anna enjoys reading and writing. More importantly, although she claims to be a fan of the New Orleans Saints, there is fortunately no other sign of such irrational fandom.

Born and raised in South Georgia, Andrew attended Valdosta State University where he obtained a degree in marketing and business. He is passionate about sports, especially high school football (Go Cats!). Andrew’s focus is to develop and cultivate relationships with businesses all around South Georgia. Like so many other Georgia Bulldogs fans, his hopes of a national championship increase every year, but in the end they are just long lost dreams.
Phil Jones is a native of South Georgia and calls Valdosta home. He is a 19-year veteran of the newspaper business, during which time he served as chairman of the Georgia Press Association’s Sales and Marketing Committee. He was also recognized as the state’s top newspaper circulation and sales director in 2002. Phil has worked in the radio industry for the last 12 years as host of The Afternoon Sports Drive, a daily sports show devoted mostly to high school football and other local sports.
Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Tyrah Walker is excited to join the ITG Next family as one of the on-air hosts. A graduate of the preeminent University of South Florida, she received her bachelor's degree in mass communications with an emphasis in broadcast news (Go, Bulls!). Tyrah is also an author. She is looking forward to sharing sports stories with the community. When she's not hosting or blogging, Tyrah enjoys reading, photography, and spending time with family.

He currently uses a Sony 6300 but will be getting the new Sony A7siii. His dream is to be a videographer for the NFL or any sports team. His favorite sports team is Orlando City SC even though they’ve never been to the playoffs.

Ryan Spikes is a name you’re sure to hear more of in baseball circles in the near future, if you haven’t already. He has quickly become one of the top high school baseball prospects in America, and is getting ready for his senior season as an infielder and pitcher for the Parkview High Panthers baseball team. Ryan was born in Conyers Georgia and is the son of Reggie and Ayauna Spikes. According to his parents, Ryan grew up playing soccer, basketball, and football along with baseball. But, it was baseball that he always fell back on. “His older sister, Brittany, played basketball and Ryan was always hanging out with her at her
practices and games playing basketball, and he was really good at it,” said Mr. Spikes. “But, he became disinterested and gave it up. He wanted to play baseball.” Ryan began playing playing baseball almost exclusively, and it was when he was 10 years old that he tried out for the Atlanta Angles, a premier travel ball team in north Georgia. Ryan made the team, and according to Ryan, this gave him a ton of confidence. “When I made the team with The Angels, that is when I really gained a lot of confidence in my ability. That was my first time really stepping out,” he said. Armed with the confidence and God-given
ability, Ryan’s next big moment came at the age of 14 years old when he decided t go tryout with the 15-Under Team USA. The tryouts were in North Carolina, and Ryan made the trip, and made the team. His parents recall this achievement as a defining moment in their son’s life, confirming what they as parents had always known- “We knew when Ryan made the team, we knew he was well above just an average…he was truly one of the best.” As a member of Team USA, Ryan and his teammates would travel to Panama, where they would win the gold medal. Next for Ryan would be travel ball and high school baseball. Ryan was living in Conyers
at the time he entered high school at Alcovy High. He played two years for the Tigers, and it was during his sophomore season at Alcovy that his high school career began to take off. As a sophomore, Spikes hit .486 with 7 HR, 8 doubles and 2 triples, and had a stunning .606 on base percentage. He also was playing travel ball with Team Elite, one of the top travel ball teams in the southeast, who played in several Perfect Game WWBA (World Wooden Bat Association) invitation– only tournaments from 2017 to 2020 with Ryan as a member of the team. During that four year stretch, Ryan had 380 plate appearances over 123 games. He hit .317 with 75 singles,
18 doubles, 8 triples, 2 homeruns, with 56 RBI and 45 stolen bases. He drew 32 walks and scored 88 runs. His on base percentage was .410. All of that was against the best pitching in the world. These tournaments are the most highly scouted amateur events in the world, attracting over 700 college coaches and professional scouts representing all 32 major league baseball teams. Ryan admits these tournaments and the fact that he performed well helped raise his profile considerably. “Playing in those high profile tournaments helped me get a lot of exposure,” said Ryan. He was right. One of the first to notice was The University of Tennessee. Ac-

cording to Ryan, “they were one of the first teams to actually come see me play.” That made a lasting impression on the standout sophomore, and he committed to play college baseball for the Volunteers. Ryan and his parents would move to Gwinnett County, where Ryan would begin attending and playing baseball for Parkview High. Spikes arrived at the Lilburn campus armed with those incredible stats, and an offer to play at one of the top collegiate baseball programs in the country with Tennessee. But, there was still a void that Spikes wanted to fulfill, which was to win a state championship. He was hoping the move to Parkview would provide him with a great opportunity to finally win a title-After all, Parkview had won back to back Georgia class 7A state titles, and was looking to become the first team in the state to win a “3-peat” (a 3rd straight championship). Spikes’ arrival would be exactly what the Panthers and head coach Chan Brown needed to accomplish the feat. In the early part of last season, Spikes was picking up where he had left off in his final season before arriving at Parkview: He was hitting .405 with 15 hits in the first 15 games of the season before word began to spread that the season could be coming to an end due to concerns surrounding the Covid virus. Ryan remembers the day that Coach Brown called the team together to deliver the bad news. “We had just returned from playing 16 | itgnext.com
in a Perfect Game tournament in Hoover, Alabama. We were getting ready to play our first region game, when coach Brown called a team meeting to tell us that the game that day could very well be our last. Turns out it was. Spikes’ hopes of winning that first state championship would have to wait, as the GHSA called a halt to the 2020 baseball season. Parkview had finished 13-2 in those 15 games, possibly giving a glimpse into what could have been, but at he same time, what still can be. Spikes will be one of the team leaders counted on by Brown to hopefully lead Parkview to that elusive third state title. “Ryan had a great shortened season for us,” says Brown. In the 15 game junior season, Ryan finished with a .405 batting average with 15 hits, 8 runs scored, 5 RBI, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 walks, and he was hit by pitch 4 times. Just how much does Spikes mean to Parkview’s chances of capturing a 3rd straight state championship? “Ryan is one of the most dynamic players to ever come thru Parkview,” he says. “Ryan is a dynamic player that you can put in the lead off spot for a spark to start the game, or you can put him in the 3 hole (3rd in the batting order) due too his power and RBI production,” says Coach Brown. “Ryan Spikes can play any position on the field at a very high talent level. He is super athletic and versatile. Ryan Spikes will be our #1 or #2 starting pitcher on the mound this year. As a pitcher,
he has an explosive 3 pitch mix selection that is hard to beat. Ryan makes us better as soon as puts the Parkview uniform on,” adds Brown. “He has all the tools.” Ryan and his parents say the pro scouts that have followed Ryan throughout his brief high school career, his travel ball team, and the standout performances in those Perfect Game tournaments have began to call. “It’s happening”, says Ry-
an’s mother Ayauna of the MLB teams calling. “We’ve had several zoom meetings with teams who right now are just wanting to learn more about Ryan, and his makeup,” she says. Does Ryan have a favorite team? “The Atlanta Braves,” he says without hesitation. Ryan also isn’t the least bit shy or hesitant when discussing his goals. “I want to play professional baseball, but I don’t want to just be drafted-I want to
become a standout baseball player. I want to be the best of the best. I want to be a Hall of Famer some day,” he says. Remember the name Ryan Spikes. You could see it in Cooperstown some day. Does Ryan spend a lot of time thinking about whether he’ll be a high draft pick, or if he’ll instead honor his commitment to Tennessee? “Not really. I’m just going to let the process happen and kinda work itself out,” he says.

Camden loses several arms who contributed innings for the Wildcats. English may have to dip into the underclassmen to see who’s ready to step up. Camden must replace a total of five starters. 2021 could be a rebuilding season for the Wildcats.
Camden loses five starters to graduation. Chief among them are Corey Dowdell, who hit .404 with three home runs and eight doubles. The Wildcats also lose a pretty good arm in Chris Mobley, who logged 29 innings pitched with 54 strikeouts last season. Dowdell will take his talents to Georgia Southern, while Mobley will play at East Carolina.

Coach Kyle Kirk admits that he’s not sure what to expect from his squad heading into the upcoming season. “We really have a lot of untested players that we are expecting to step in and fill major roles for us,” said the Blue Devils Head Coach. He adds, “we lost most of our starting pitching staff, as well as five starters from last years team.” Look for Tift County to be stronger, as the athletic program added long time VSU strength and conditioning coach Michael Doscher to its staff. The Pines Organization is owned and operated by founder Brad Weeks. It is located in and operates out of Nashville, Georgia. In its 4th season, The Pines Organization currently has a total of 18 teams, 10 of which are baseball teams, with the remaining 8 softball teams. According to Weeks, he started small, with just one team. “I started with one team, just to give the local kids a team to play on, and to help them develop. That was in the fall of 2017,” says Weeks. “We went from one team to four in our first year.” Weeks said that he never imagined that his small, one team operation would grow into anything close to what it is today. But, he says, the growth of his organization isnt anything unique. “You’ve got small and large sized travel ball teams”, said Weeks. We simply responded to parents who wanted their sons and daughters to be involved with the best coaches and players, and travel ball has got that reputation, that it’s a bit more aggressive when it comes to teaching kids the game.” The Pines fields teams in every age category, according to Weeks. “We have every age group, from 7U to 14 U, and we serve a 100 mile radius from Nashville,” he says. Weeks admits that teaching the kids the basics and fundamentals of baseball is important, but don’t be fooled by what the expectations are. “These parents want their kids to learn the game, but they want them to be a part of a winning organization,” says Weeks. So, where does The Pines fall in that belief? “We strive to be cost effective without giving up that winning attitude that parents expect from a travel ball team,” says Weeks. Travel ball teams are starting to grow in terms of number of teams, and its important to stay competitive by recruiting the top talent-and that means in players and coaches. How exactly do you do that? With the players, it means fielding winning teams. Win and they will come, so to speak. What about the coaches? You pay them. That’s right… travel ball teams use paid coaches. The Pines, according to Weeks, uses paid and volunteer coaches. He says you have to with the number of travel ball teams that are popping up. “Lets be honest,” Weeks says, “You’ve now got so many teams that you’ve got to do what it takes to be successful.” Weeks continues, “if you don’t, parents will take their kids out of my organization and put them with someone else.”

Much has been said, reported, and written about the three high profile player transfers in 2020 involving Jake Garcia, Carlos Del Rio, and Chief Borders. After enduring a tumultuous year that included doubt and uncertainty about whether they’d be able to finish out their final year of high school eligibility after several moves with their families, the three standout players are playing high school football once again. The path they took to get here was anything but easy, and the families of all three players involved were eager to share their individual stories.
Chief Borders and Carlos Del Rio were teammates at McEachern High School, and each player was coming off a stellar junior season with the Indians. Then, the families of Borders and Del Rio made the decision to leave McEachern and finish out their senior seasons at other schools. Borders’ family made the decision to leave first and applied for a transfer to Carrollton High School. That’s when the problems arose. The Borders family

deferred all questions for this story to their attorney, Jason Thompson. He spoke on behalf of the Borders family and was fairly candid when asked about Chief’s transfer and the policies of the GHSA. “There are the individual players, then there is the overall problem, which is the GHSA’s rules and bylaws,” Thompson said. “The rules and bylaws are so messed up that most people don’t understand them or what they’re about. The rules are misapplied. What’s OK for one student isn’t
OK for another. Chief was the seminole case. Once Chief was denied eligibility at Carrolton, the GHSA allowed Chief to transfer again so that they wouldn’t have to admit they were wrong.” Thompson said that when Borders and his family moved from the McEachern school district to Carrollton, he felt that they had met all of the requirements for a legitimate move and transfer, including what the GHSA defines as a “bona fide” move. In an interview I had with GHSA Executive
Director Dr. Robin Hines on “Extra Point! With Phil Jones,” he explained what it means to make a “bonafide” move: “A bona fide move is a simultaneous move by all members of the previous households. It’s where every member of a household moves simultaneously while changing enrollments. It must be a move of the entire family unit from one place to another. They must show that they have made a bona fide move into the new residence, and they must also show and demonstrate that they have fully relinquished the previous residence – whether that means having put the residence up for sale, shut the house down, turned off all essential utilities.” Hines said it can be tough for people to fully understand. “It is a complicated issue, but that is what a bona fide move is,” he said. Thompson addressed the bona fide move with the Borders family. “Chief and his family did a bona fide move pursuant to the GHSA rules, but the as-
sociation simply didn’t want to admit that they were wrong when they incorrectly ruled that Chief was ineligible after the first move,” Thompson said. Thompson said that the GHSA then suggested to him and the Borders family that a second move would be OK. “That’s what they offered us and the rest of the student-athletes that wanted to transfer,” Thompson said. “That seemed odd.” Thompson said that there are many issues associated with the GHSA transfer issue.
“The GHSA has control over all of these student-athletes, and there’s no due process if you don’t agree with them,” he said. “It’s a real mess.”
Chief Borders and his family eventually moved and reapplied to transfer to Heard County High School, where Chief is attending school and playing for the football team.
In the case of Carols Del Rio, Carlos Del Rio Sr. said he wanted to move his family due mostly to opportunities with his construction business, but he also pointed out that there were things he did not agree with at McEachern. “I was simply not satisfied with certain things at McEachern,” Del Rio Sr. said. He was quick to point out that his son did enjoy his time at McEachern, and the decision was his alone, not his son’s.
“My son did not want to leave,” Del Rio Sr. said. “I’m in the construction business, and there were opportunities that opened up in the area that included the Grayson school district.”
He said that he was looking for a school with great academic qualities, as well as a solid football program, and Grayson seemed to fit what he was looking for. In the case of Del Rio, the problems arose with another student-athlete in the household. “I have custody of Jevon Baker, who also played at McEachern with Carlos,” Del Rio Sr. said. “He was a senior, while Carlos was a junior. Once we decided to transfer out of McEachern, Jevon wanted to stay. He had three months left before heading off to play at Alabama.” Del Rio Sr. said that there was a miscommunication with the GHSA related to Baker being able to stay behind. “The GHSA initially told me that neither Jevon or Carlos would be able to play if Jevon
stayed back at McEachern,” Del Rio Sr. said. “I informed them that Jevon was a senior, and that’s where the confusion came in. I thought it was then cleared by the GHSA for Jevon to stay behind while Carlos and I moved, but unfortunately we found out later once we were at Grayson that wasn’t the case.” That is when the GHSA informed Del Rio Sr. that his son was ruled ineligible due to the entire family unit not moving together, aka the bona fide rule. Del Rio Sr. said that he should have had a better understanding of the rule. “It’s all behind us now,” Del Rio Sr. said. Carlos Del Rio is now at Cartersville, where he is seeing playing time at QB for the Hurricanes.
The third and final transfer issue involves Jake Garcia and his family. In this case, which has received the most attention due to an interview that Randy and Yvonne Garcia did with ESPN, Jake Garcia transferred from California to Valdosta High School, where he was ruled eligible and played in the Wildcats’ season opener. However, following the much-publicized interview with the sports network during which a remark was made by the Garcia’s about their marital status, the GHSA reversed their initial ruling and declared Jake Garcia ineligible. The Garcia family filed an appeal, in which the GHSA upheld their initial ruling of ineligibility. According to the GHSA, Garcia gained eligibility using “false information” and
did not meet the bona fide move rule. Randy Garcia said it was never really explained to them what they did wrong. “They never gave us a specific reason,” he said. “All they would say was that it was not a bona fide move. They told us, ‘Just read the bylaws. It’s in there.’” Randy Garcia said the ESPN interview was a mistake.
“That hurt us and, unfortunately, our son,” he said. “We would not do that if we had to do it over again.” Jake Garcia is currently attending Grayson High School and is playing with the Rams. While these are the three biggest high profile cases, the GHSA said there are “thousands” of transfer cases each school year affecting multiple sports. Still, the
cases of Del Rio, Borders, and Garcia have raised several concerns with the GHSA rules and bylaws. The most note-worthy of these appears to be the rule allowing student-athletes to transfer multiple times between member schools within a calendar school year. Expect much more discussion to follow over the next few months and, hopefully, a change in the GHSA’s bylaws and rules. At the forefront of these and all other transfer cases is the bona fide move clause that is contained within the GHSA bylaws.

Winter Sports Continue Despite Rising COVID Cases Written by: Lexi Fitzpatrick
The GHSA has come together, with Dr. Robin Hines leading as the executive director, to determine the safest way to proceed with winter sports. Fall sports are coming to a close across Georgia’s high schools. Football is playing its last games in the state championship playoffs; volleyball is all wrapped up with teams like Alpharetta, Buford, and McIntosh coming out on top; and cross country and softball have both also found this year’s champions. With the excitement of the start of the school year and it’s first sports ending, an empty confusion seems to hang in the air as to what to do next. Challenges arise in this upcoming season for several reasons. The first problem is the move to heavier indoor arena sports. In the fall, sports like football, softball, and cross country are all played outside, allowing for open air and less hospitable conditions for the coronavirus to survive. Volleyball is indoors, but a non-contact sport. But in the winter, the games move inside for basketball and wrestling. This closed gym environment has reduced air circulation that allows for easier spread of the virus. The second factor that is troubling to the GHSA is that COVID-19 cases are hitting another spike. On Oct. 1, daily averages of positive cases were just under 1,200, but as of Nov. 19, daily positive cases have doubled with the average nearly hitting 2,400. Keeping this in mind, Hines feels confident in Georgia’s ability to combat the virus and take the appropriate safety measures to ensure audiences and players alike remain healthy. “We feel good about where things have gone so far, but as it gets colder and we move indoors, that’s certainly cause for concern, and we’ll take a close look at things,” Hines said. “Everyone’s going to have to measure the risk-reward factor as they go.” The GHSA has already set a few safety measures in place for the upcoming basketball season. Players will be expected to sit 6 feet apart when on the bench, and referees will have to use something other than a typical whistle to prevent them from accidentally spitting on the players. Wrestling is also taking precautions, such as frequently sanitizing mats and using more than one gym per tournament to spread out teams. But what do health officials think? Do they think that it’s a good idea to play winter sports? How much is one season worth compared to the lives that it might affect due to the pandemic? “I think it would be irresponsible to proceed with these sports, especially with spectators who would often be in higher risk groups,” said Dr. Mark Ebell, an epidemiology and biostatistics professor at the University of Georgia’s College of Public Health. It’ll be up to the individual schools as well as the GHSA to ultimately decide how the winter season proceeds.

WHAT TO EXPECT Glynn Academy feels like their best opportunity at a state title may have been 2020. The Red Terrors were ranked #1 in the state in 6A, and were rolling along with 12 wins in 14 games. But, that was then. What about this year? They still have a lot of returning experience from that squad, including three of their top four hitters from a year ago. Glynn Academy has a great opportunity to pick right up where they left off in 2020.

Hayden Murphy is a rising junior at Tiftarea Academy, and at first glance, one would probably guess that he plays football, and maybe basketball for the Panthers. Indeed, Hayden is getting ready to take the floor for the Panthers hoops squad as they prepare to get the 2021 season underway. But, the truth is that baseball is what’s primarily on the mind of Hayden Murphy right now. That’s because He is one of the best high school baseball players in America. He is an infielder and RH Pitcher, and is being considered a “Two-Way Player,” meaning he is talented enough to play both Pitcher and play the Infield. While the actual rankings will fluctuate slightly, Hayden is ranked consistently in the top 50 high school players in the most every respected national recruiting and scouting publications. According to Hayden’s father, Kris, Perfect Game ranks Hayden as the #48 player in the country, while Baseball Report ranks him #21 overall. Prep Baseball Report shows Hayden as #22 overall. No matter which publication has him at whatever number, one thing is for certain: Hayden Murphy is one of the most talented baseball players to come out of South Georgia. Hayden was born, grew up in, and still lives in Chula, Georgia with his parents Kris and Melissa, and Hannah Grace, a younger sister. Hayden also has an older sister, Kirsten, 19. He has attended Tift area Academy since kindergarten. Hayden completed two football seasons during his youth; one each for Tiftarea's 5th grade team and flag football at Tifton's YMCA. However, Hayden suffered numerous concussions while playing football. While his injuries brought an end to his short football career, it opened the door for Hayden to focus more on the game of baseball. According to Kris Murphy, it became evident that Hayden was blessed with a special God-given talent for baseball, even at a very young age. "Hayden was playing with kids a couple years older than him when he was six years old," Mr. Murphy said. "But her was actually the best player on the team." He is also quick to praise Brad Porter, who currently coaches the Valdosta Wildcats baseball team, but was at Tiftarea when Hayden was just starting to develop as a player. "Coach Porter helped Hayden's progress by allowing him to practice with the varsity team while he recovered from concussions." said Mr. Murphy. Coach Chance Benson is now the coach at Tiftarea, and said he can recall when he first learned of Hayden’s baseball prowess, after he succeeded Porter as head coach. “Soon after I was hired, I was told that we had an upcoming 8th grader that had worked out and practiced with the varsity over the summer program. Typically, in my experience, an 8th grader just isn’t physically developed enough to play at the varsity level,” said Benson. “But, once we started our 3 on 1 drills, we could all see right away that Hayden was a special player, and was not physically over matched.” 54 | itgnext.com

Hayden began playing travel baseball at the age of seven with Valdosta baseball and softball legend Carl Rose’s local travel team, The Black Sox. Once Hayden turned twelve, he began playing with one of the most recognized travel baseball organizations around in Team Elite South. Two years later, at the age of fourteen, Hayden moved up to play for Team Elite’s national group out of Winder. Team Elite’s Owner and General Manager, Brad Bouras, talks glowingly about Hayden. “Hayden has the tools to reach the highest level on the mound”, says Bouras. “ He displays the same qualities that our top talent has had. Between his strong arm, great movement on his pitches, hard work ethic and willingness to compete, he has the ability to play this game for a long time,” said Bouras. While playing for Team Elite, Haydens baseball career truly began to flourish to another level, revealing just how talented he truly was. At 14, Hayden was invited to play in the Perfect Game Select Festival. This is a showcase event that invites the top 40 fourteen year olds from around the country to play in a round robin type tournament. This began a series of events that would establish Hayden as truly one of the best young talents in the country. It also did a lot for Hayden’s confidence. “When I first got invited, I didn’t feel like I belonged there,” says Hayden. “But, as the week went on, I began to realize that I was good enough to be there. It was a great experience, and since that event, I have become much more confident in my abilities, and I have grown as a player,” he said. Kris Murphy looks back, and agrees that was a defining moment in his sons growth as a player. “I’m sure every parent looks at their child and thinks they’re a special player,” says Murphy. “But things started moving really quickly for Hayden when he turned 14. You could just see it.” In the summer following Haydens 8th grade year, Hayden attended a camp at Auburn University. He immediately grew to love the Auburn coaches, and made the decision then that Auburn was where he wanted to be following his high school career. What was it about Auburn that Hayden liked so much? “Butch Thompson”, Hayden says without hesitation. The War Eagle Head Baseball Coach made an impression on Hayden, enough that Hayden has verbally committed to Auburn. “There’s not a better place to be,” Hayden says of Auburn and Thompson. He also mentioned Karl Nonemaker, who is an Auburn Assistant to Thompson, and serves as Auburn’s recruiting coordinator. “I really liked coach Karl and Coach Thompson,” said Hayden. It is worth mentioning that any college cannot initiate personal recruitment of any player until September 1st of their Junior season, so until then the Auburn commitment remains a verbal, non-binding agreement. Of course, there’s another thing to consider, which is the possibility of Hayden being selected in a future Major League Baseball Draft. With professional baseball a very real thing in Hayden’s future, it’s quite possible that Hayden may never set foot on the campus of Auburn. At the moment, most recruiting services rank Hayden as a late first-round or early second- round selection. Both Hayden and his father agree that a lot of what will eventually decide Haydens future depends on what happens over the 56 | itgnext.com

next season or two. “I’m just content with letting everything just play out and see what happens once I’m finished playing,” says Hayden. “If it’s the pros, that’s great. If it’s Auburn, then I’ll go to Auburn and enjoy my time there.” Of course, it’s quite possible that both could happen; that is, Hayden could go to Auburn, then be selected in a future MLB draft. Mr. Hayden and Hayden’s mom are leaning towards college first, but they also understand that if the situation is right, that might mean going pro. “There becomes a line where if Hayden’s draft status is so high, then it would be crazy to not consider signing a pro contract,” says Mr. Murphy, referring to the millions of dollars that a top draft pick would command. Hayden plays 3B and pitches at Tiftarea Academy, then plays SS and Pitches for Team Elite. One look at Hayden’s stats certainly tell the story of his success. At Tiftarea, in his 2019 freshman season, Hayden batted .359, with a .578 slugging percentage. He hit 1 HR with 24 RBI and scored 22 runs. He went an amazing 10-1 with 64 K’s and a 2.14 ERA. Last season, in just 8 games, Hayden batted .316 with a .632 slugging percentage. He had 1 HR with 5 RBI in 19 AB. On the mound, he went 3-1 with 43 K in just 21 innings. He had an 0.33 ERA. In one game, Hayden struck out 14 opposing hitters in a 5-inning span. Hayden’s travel ball numbers are just as impressive. In 26 perfect game tournaments, Hayden has been named to the All-Tournament Team 20 times. He has one MVP award. He has been chosen as a Perfect Game and Under Armour Preseason All American the past two years. He has been on the South East Regional Team for USA Baseball. In Hayden’s freshman season at Tiftarea, he was named GISA First Team, and was named Region Pitcher of the Year that same freshman year.
Here are Hayden’s pitching numbers: Fastball clocked at 90-93 MPH His slider clocked at 89-82 MPH His Change-up clocked at 80-82 MPH His Curve ball clocked at 76-78 MPH At the plate, his Tee exit-Velocity was 93 MPH In his spare time, and away from the baseball field, Hayden enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Hayden will also play basketball this winter for Tiftarea. If you think that Hayden’s accomplishments are impressive so far, well, consider this: He excels at the game of baseball despite being a Type 1 Diabetic, a condition that he was diagnosed with, and has managed since he was 4 years old. Hayden must wear an insulin pump around the clock, and must routinely check his blood sugar 3-4 times per day. He removes the pump before starting each baseball game, but he must check his blood sugar level 30 minutes before games, and then usually once more about half way through the game. Like any Type 1 Diabetic, if his blood sugar is too high, he must stop and give himself an insulin shot, something that he has been forced to do several times during previous games. While diabetes is nothing to take lightly and can be a tough condition to manage, Hayden has shown already that when it comes to facing baseball’s toughest batters and pitchers, he can overcome and excel. No reason to expect him to slow down now.

The coronavirus may have changed a few things in high school football, such as the number of fans allowed at games and where the athletes are allowed to go when they’re off the field, but one thing remained the same: the intense competitiveness and raw talent of the athletes. Among the athletes considered to be the Georgia high school Heisman winner are running back Cade Peterson from Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga and quarterback Coleman Smith from Mount Pisgah Christian High School in Johns Creek. But, ultimately, the award this year goes to Collins Hill High School’s Sam Horn. Horn is a junior quarterback hailing from Suwanee, Georgia. His 6’4”, 180-pound frame immediately asserts him as a physical threat. Couple that with his skill, work ethic, and knowledge of the sport, and there’s no denying that Horn is one of the best players coming out of the class of 2022. Horn is a dual-threat quarterback, which means he’s proficient in both passing the ball and in seeing the field and making the decision of when it’s the right time for him to run. His large physique doesn’t stop him from being quick and agile with the ball. His background in baseball has also helped train him and increase his abilities, his overall strength, and his hand-eye coordination. In Horn’s junior year playing for the Collins Hill Eagles, he has accumulated noteworthy statistics. In 10 games he has thrown 2,550 total passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, and 226 pass completions out of 343 attempts. Along with the usual passing touchdowns that quarterbacks throw, Horn has also traveled 71 total rushing yards and has scored one rushing touchdown. He led his team to a total of 264 touchdown points and a No. 13 ranking in the state of Georgia for classes 7A-4A. All of his talent and hard work has garnered the attention of 13 Division I NCAA football programs: Tennessee, Appalachian State, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, Troy, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. According to 247Sports, Tennessee is predicted to be at the top of Horn’s list. He still has time to decide where he wants to commit to continue his football career and still has three semesters of high school to train, grow further as an athlete, and gain more attention nationally. The competition was steep this year, with athletes traveling to Georgia from all over the country to be able to play out a football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic stopping play in some states. But when it comes down to it, Georgia native Sam Horn is most worthy of the title Heisman winner.

They are a couple of infielders in Garrett Henderson and Shane Stephenson, along with outfielder Mack McDowell. Catcher and right handed pitcher Slade Taylor will also be missed. In addition to Taylor, Henderson, Stephenson and McDowell all spent time on the mound as right handed pitchers also. Those four graduating seniors will be missed, according to Strickland.

WHAT TO EXPECT The Cougars are still seeking a new head coach to lead the team after former head coach David Lamberth resigned. Whoever takes the job will get a team that gave up almost as many runs (73) as they scored (78) in the abbreviated season. The new coach will emphasize hitting the ball, as the Cougars finished with a .224 team average at the plate. Things could be tough in the always competitive Region 1-3A with Cook and Worth County as region foes. Look for a rebuilding year, as the Cougars transition to a new coach and philosophy.
KEY LOSSES The Cougars will miss the services of three graduating seniors who contributed nice numbers in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The group includes P/OF Toby Stripling, who had 17 strikeouts in just 12 games. Another arm will be missed with the departure of pitcher and utility man Connor Richmond. He had 23 strikeouts in the short season. INF/DH Nick Lanneau and his .346 batting average will be missed in 2021.

Chaos ensued as Samuel Hines Jr. drained the tie-breaking free throw to put the Wheeler boys basketball team ahead 60-59. One failed full-court heave later, the Wildcats stormed the Macon Centreplex as 7A basketball state champions, upsetting the topranked Grayson Rams. The Wildcats avenged their early-season loss by drawing a foul with 1.1 seconds left in the title game and sinking the game-winning free throw. Grayson, at 30-1 with the second-hardest schedule in the state, were heavy favorites against the 23-7 Wildcats, yet the Caleb Murphy-led Rams would not clinch a championship and shatter the impenetrable will of the Wildcats. Now, Wheeler is back for more. Just as suddenly as the upset of Grayson occurred, chatter of Wheeler’s future diminished. Moving down to Class 6A certainly did not help their case to maintain relevance. However, they have remained adamant on their path to success in the winter of 2020, starting the season with seven wins and a sole loss to South Cobb. Along with the placement in 6A came lower-classification competition but equally good games, much like previous years. The Wildcats opened their 2020 campaign with a 79-68 win over 2019 semifinalist McEachern, fueled by a 13-plus point differential in the first quarter. They opened region play with an 8-point victory over the Buccaneers of Allatoona. These two season-opening victories set the stage for a battle with 4-1 Sandy Creek, 3A’s top-ranked squad whose only loss was to Grayson. A 16-2 run by the Patriots in the second quarter seemed to bury the former 7A champions. However, Wheeler closed the Sandy Creek lead to only six with a 9-0 run. Scores were traded for the entirety of the third period and for the majority of the fourth. A late basket for the Patriots seemed to be the dagger, stretching the lead to 7, 61-54. Wheeler did not give up, as they scored 8 unanswered points and capped the victory with a dunk by Ja’Heim Hudson. This nail-biting 62-61 finish paved the way for a more dominating win three days later, as the Wildcats bulldozed Pope, 72-44. Hopes of an undefeated season came to an end quickly, as Wheeler fell at South Cobb 81-74. However, they handled the loss as well as possible, proceeding to defeat Kennesaw Mountain and Sprayberry in the next three days by a combined 38-point margin. Their most impressive win of the young season can be credited to this momentum, as Wheeler took down second-ranked Pebblebrook in convincing fashion 63-45. The schedule only gets more difficult from here on, as the Wildcats must take on Lanier, Milton, Kell (twice), and South Cobb in a rematch. Last year’s victory was not a fluke. Wheeler is back for seconds in a year where the table is strewn with the foods of success.
The GHSA is cracking down on basketball COVID-19 rule breakers during games. In its latest Weekly Blast newsletter, the organization stressed that if bench seating is not spaced at least 6 feet apart, or everyone on the bench is not wearing a face covering, then a report should be filed. Coaches were also informed to stay in the coaching box, as “there have been far too many instances early in the season where coaches are well out of the box.” The newsletter stated that everyone must adhere to the COVID-19 modifications to ensure a completed season.

Douglas County Boys Basketball Raises $12K for Season Douglas County boys basketball has created a WeFund4U account to raise money for their season that the school couldn’t provide because of COVID-19. With a goal of $4,000, they’ve already raised $12,625. With COVID-19 affecting school sports budgets, Douglas County wasn’t able to provide their boys basketball team with the funding they normally receive. The team decided to reach out to their community and ask for help so that they could still have a full season.
Sonoraville Seniors Combine for Big Rivalry Win on Senior Night On senior night against a rival, the Sonoraville Phoenix seniors showed what they could do. In a winning effort against the Calhoun Yellow Jackets, Sonoraville scored 55 total points. Fifty of those points came from the five senior players. Murray Somers, Orry Darnell, Garrison Mullins, Ian King, and Kevin Morrison were all named as the players of the game by Phoenix head coach Brent Mashburn. After the game, Mashburn said that he was “extremely proud of how those five guys compete and happy to see them get a good win on senior night.”

It was a pleasure to be with the Valdosta High School Wildcats on Friday morning game days this fall. We were able to serve them breakfast at local churches and the team was able to hear a devotional before leaving. We are so thankful for the local churches that prepared these meals and offered their facilities to make this possible. Some of these were First Baptist Church in Valdosta, CrossPointe Church, The Porch Community Church, New Covenant Church, Salvation Army, Azalea City Church of God and First United Methodist Church of Valdosta. We could not have done this without them. In October, we had our annual Christ Makes Winners Rally. Although it was down-sized due to the virus, we still had a great time. Justin Crenshaw and Band from The Porch Community Church provided the music and Thomas Wade from First Baptist Church in Valdosta brought the message. Thanks to all who were able to attend and to those who helped make this event a success. Our Spring Fundraising Banquet is scheduled for February 27th, 2021. The guest speaker will be Benjamin Watson. Ben was a first round draft pick and Super Bowl Champion. He played for the University of Georgia while in college. Ben is a very dedicated Christian who spends his life helping others. He loves the Lord and brings a great message that everyone needs to hear. Finding a replacement at SS for the departed K.J. Manning will also be a priority. Does Cook have the talent to do it? They do, as the Hornets have always been able to reload and continue at a playoff-caliber level. At first glance, Cook has the “advantage” of moving from Class 3A to 2A, but upon closer inspection, things may not necessarily get easier with the likes of Thomasville, Berrien, and Early County as new region foes.

WHAT TO EXPECT The Rams could struggle with so much talent lost to graduation. Senior Worth Smith is the lone returning starter, which will force the three remaining seniors to step up into full time roles this season. That group is Cameron Lewis, Griffin Melton, and Jacob Perrin. Perrin has been injured the last two seasons, so his return depends on if he is healthy to start the season. It will certainly be a rebuilding season in 2021 for Worth County. That, along with the Rams moving into Region 1-AA with Thomasville, Fitzgerald, Berrien, and Early County, along with former region foe Cook High will make this a tough go for Worth County and Coach Smith this season.
KEY LOSSES A lot. The Rams will lose 1-6 in the order from last year. That’s six starters, with four of those signing college scholarships. Those players lost to graduation include Cason King, the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year. He signed with Truett McConell. Jeremiah Riddell, who was 12-1 over the last two seasons on the mound for the Rams, is a walk-on invite with Georgia Southwestern. Jack Fletcher is now pitching with Emanual College. Bryce Gaddy signed with the University of Dubuque (Iowa). Baily Coker and Gabe Berger round out the key seniors who wont return.

Safe at Home: Former High School Coaches Return to Diamond to Coach Different Brand of Baseball Written by: Phil Jones
SGSA (South Ga Sports Academy) is a travel ball organization operating out of Valdosta and Lowndes County. It is owned and operated by former local high school baseball coaches Danny Redshaw of Lowndes and Tony Kirkland, who was the former head baseball coach at Colquitt County. The two long time baseball men took over SGSA in June of 2019 from its original founder and previous owner Ryan Page once he was named head baseball coach at Lowndes High School. According to Page, he decided to form SGSA after noticing a need for more South Georgia-based travel baseball teams. “There were not many travel ball teams serving the younger age groups in South Georgia-a lot of kids and their parents were driving to middle and north Georgia, or to Jacksonville just to get their kids with a team,” Page said. He came up with the name because he wanted create an organization that closely resembled that of a teaching academy. “We wanted to run it like an academy,” said Page. That would include an environment where younger kids could work on their hitting, fielding...all of their fundamentals, while giving them every chance to become successful baseball players. The results certainly speak for themselves: SGSA had two of its teams finish #2 in national tournaments in back-to-back seasons. The first to do it was the 11-U team finishing as runner up in the USSSA National Tourney. Then, the following season, the SGSA 12-U team finished as the #2 team in the Perfect game National Tournament. Page was hired in June of 2019 as the head baseball coach at Lowndes High School. Because of taking over the Vikings, he would no longer be able to oversee SGSA, so he turned to Redshaw and Kirkland, who agreed to take over. Page wanted someone to keep the SGSA program headed in the righ direction, and he knew he would have that in Redshaw and Kirkland. Not only has the two long-time coaches been able to keep the organization’s younger team’s success moving forward, but they’ve also added older age categories: SGSA now fields 10 fall teams, ranging from 9 to 18 years of age. According to Redshaw, the goal of SGSA is three-fold. Number one is to teach the younger kids the game of baseball “the right way”, stressing the fundamentals. Number two was to carry forward the original stated goal of creating and maintaining local travel ball teams that would allow South Georgia and North Florida players and their families the opportunity to have a local program they could call their own, stay close to home, and play for a competitive travel ball organization without having to travel to other parts of the state; and the third goal was to create opportunities for older age groups at the high school level to be able to showcase their skills, and hopefully have an opportunity to continue playing baseball after they leave high school. With Redshaw and Kirkland’s extensive background in coaching baseball, they’re able to apply their combined 60-plus years of experience to the participants of SGSA. Redshaw works primarily with the pitchers and fielders, while Kirkland works with the batters in the role of a hitting coach. Valwood’s Shipman will hope some of his younger guys can step up this year. They were only able to play a handful of games, three to be exact, and lost a lot of playing experience with five starters graduating. “Our team will be very inexperienced and untested this year due to not only the shortened varsity season. but because of our shortened b-team season, as well,” said Shipman. He added, “Its really hard to evaluate what we will look like until our guys return from playing fall sports.”

The Valiants will lose five of the starting nine position players when they kick off the upcoming season. That group includes Pitcher Tommy Davis, Second Baseman Wade Holton, Shortstop Colby McGee, Catcher Mason Williams, and outfielder Maddux Wood.
Twelve wins will be a plus for this inexperienced team.

A Season Like No Other Written by: Jon Nelson
In a season like the one just past, I’ll openly admit to two things. I enjoy seeing Georgia teams get national recognition when it comes to rankings in high school football (Grayson and Colquitt County as your examples…) and, just a much, I enjoy seeing newer teams and fresher faces making their presences felt in a post-season. Give you a few examples. Brooks County and Dublin dropped down from class AA to Single-A Public and still made a lot of noise. When the post-season brackets came out and we all saw the possibility of a second-round match-up between the two, it drew immediate attention. You could say the same about the quarterfinals match-up with Cedar Grove and Crisp- this time, however, the Class AAA rematch was in Cordele. But, that’s the rotation of the classes and brackets for you… it happens sometimes. The chance to see teams like River Ridge, Fannin County, Trinity Christian, Appling County, Riverdale, Perry, Jones County, Warren County, Washington-Wilkes, and Hughes go deep is special to towns like Blue Ridge, Baxley, Washington, Warrenton and Gray speaks volumes for those fan bases. At the same time, you get to see the return of teams like Valdosta under 300-win Rush Propst. You get to see Carrollton, Ware County, Coffee, Bainbridge, Peach, Oconee, Pierce, and Thomasville do their thing to reinforce what has been built as well. 92 | itgnext.com
But, as we turn the page into a new calendar year, I have seen coaches turn their coaching philosophies in the face of what we’re all facing. I have seen administrators and Athletic Directors be as flexible as possible to make sure student-athletes can continue to train, learn, and not be left behind in some very difficult situations. To all of you, you have my unending respect. Games have been lost and gained in 48-hour spans. Teams have abandoned non-region games to focus on region play- meaning their first month of their calendars are put away entirely. There were even a handful of teams that started out not playing at all that jumped back in to the schedule much like a lot of college football conferences we’ve seen this year. It was all about calling a game on the fly. Last, but certainly not least, I tip my hat to the GHSA and Executive Director Dr. Robin Hines. He was patient. He was prudent and looked at the landscape daily. He consulted and compared notes with neighboring states and came up with answers that meant a schedule happened. All of the teams and towns that make up the GHSA got to play a football season- if they so chose. But 2020 meant a lot more than that on a bunch of different fronts. Play it safe, everyone.
