2015 District Record 2-2 2015 Overall Record 5-5 Look for the “Blue Army” to make a statement in 2016. Under the leadership of Head Coach Josh Wright, the Marlins are ready to take the next step toward a championship. With the 2-year starter, senior Chandler Marshall at Middle Linebacker and senior cornerback Chuck Taylor getting after the ball on defense, they look to be a force to be reckoned with. Although they lost Quarterback Cody Saunders (West Virginia), Arnold is prepared to have a say in the playoffs. Coach Wright says, “This off-season was our most successful and we just have to transfer it to the football field.” This team is ready to compete with all on their schedule playing a “hard-nosed” style of football and being better prepared than their opponents. The Marlins are also looking for strong contributions from Senior Defensive Lineman Dalton Lykins and Senior Placekicker Nick Guzman. Underclassmen Dylan Gandy, Jarrett Dutton, and Veryl White are expected to contribute heavily this fall. A platoon of younger players will also make their mark this season. Coach Wright states “we have developed a culture of team here at Arnold High, we are in this together. That’s how we have become the ‘Blue Army’.” Three big games on the schedule for the Marlins are the home contest versus Mosley, Pensacola High, and West Florida High. Look for these experienced programs to challenge Arnold and define how good they will be in 2016.

The Gators of Baker High School are eager to add a fourth straight District 1-1A Title this upcoming season but it will not be easy. Coach Brunson will have to prepare a new quarterback and offensive line. The Gators advanced last year to the semi-finals and their goal this year is to go all the way for the state crown. With all the new starters on the offensive side of the ball, they will have to rely heavily on returning running back Jalen Ciurleo and receiver Kalee Ciurleo. Jalen was the leading rusher last year and brother Kalee the leading receiver. As the offense develops and gels, the Gators will be dependent on their defense initially in the season. Fortunately with 7 starters returning on defense, experience should be a difference maker. Defensive Linemen Oakley Kimbrel, Tanner Ward, and Chris Raines will lead the defensive front. Right behind them are returning Linebackers Nick Adams, Logan Rickman, and Chris Roller. Taking a leadership role in the secondary is experienced Jamal Day.

Also look for veteran placekicker Josh Springle to give these guys an advantage in the special team’s game.

All-Star Football Game Showcases Area Talent Each year in December, the week after the Florida football state championships, seniors from Escambia County take on seniors from Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties in the Subway High School All-Star Football Game.  This East (Okaloosa & Santa Rosa) vs. West (Escambia) battle started back in 2004 when community and sports leaders partnered with Pensacola Sports (then Pensacola Sports Association) to create an event to showcase Pensacola area seniors in one final game for their high school career.

Story and Photos Submited by: Pensacola Sports

During the regular high school season, area head coaches send in their nominations for their top seniors. Once nominations are in, Pensacola Sports holds a selection meeting, in which every school attends, to form the teams.  Each roster is made up of 44 seniors, and each school is guaranteed at least two roster spots on the team.  The goal of the game is to showcase each player, so everyone is guaranteed playing time.  Some players view this game as one final chance to prove to college scouts that they have what it takes to play on the next level, while others simply use the game to take it all in and celebrate the career they’ve had over the past four years with old teammates and new friends. Pensacola Sports Executive Director Ray Palmer, who has been a

part of all 12 All-Star Games says, “The players selected to play in the game can take great pride in knowing they were selected by not only their coaches, but the other coaches in the three county region.  Their selection allows them to play one more game in front of family, friends, classmates and fans from the area before moving on to the next stage of their lives, with something special to remember.” “For many of the student’s last prep experience, showcase talent against some of the best the area,” said Norm Ross, Deputy Superintendent of Schools in Escambia County. It’s amazing how many kids are recruited because of their appearance in the game.  It’s amazing the success stories that come from the All Star Game, and to be selected is monumental for the young men.”

Subway HSAS Alumni to play in the NFL Graham Gano, 2004, Tate, Carolina Panthers Mike Johnson, 2004, Pine Forest, Retired George Selvie, 2004, Pine Forest, Free Agent Terrell McLain, 2006, Pensacola, Dallas Cowboys Alfred Morris, 2006, Pine Forest, Dallas Cowboys Ladarious Green, 2007, Washington, Pittsburgh Steelers Trent Richardson, 2008, Escambia, Baltimore Ravens Akeem Spence, 2008, Fort Walton Beach, Tampa Bay Bucs Loucheiz Purifoy, 2010, Pine Forest, Indianapolis Colts

“Coaching in the All-Star Game provides a coach with an opportunity to see the best players in the area in a different light, see how they interact with their peers, see their work ethic, and things you wouldn’t see during a game,”

said Greg Seibert, former all-star coach and head coach from Catholic High. “It really provides us with an opportunity to get to know our colleagues and see how they interact with players and see their coaching techniques.”   Pensacola Sports facilitates the event by setting up coaching rotations, selection meetings, and practice dates, as well as ordering uniforms, scheduling referees, painting the field, inviting over 200 college scouts from the Southeast, and organizing a banquet for the players. The Pensacola area is proud to be the hometown of many great National Football League and college football players such as Emmitt Smith, Derrick Brooks, Danny Wuerfel, and Josh Sitton. Because of this, college recruiters do not pass up on the chance to see 88 of the best area players in one game.  Over 250 colleges from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana are invited to the games and practices to get a first-hand look at the talent.   For a high school senior without many college options, obtaining a football scholarship might be the only way for him to attend college.  Pensacola Sports hosts the Subway High School All-Star Football Game to help these seniors continue their football career, as well as pursue their college education.

The 2016 game will take place on December 16th at 7:00 p.m. at a location that has yet to be determined.  If you have any questions about the game, please contact Pensacola Sports at 850-434-2800.

Walton Braves

DeFuniak Springs, FL

The Walton High School Braves accomplished a feat that had never been done before in school history. They went undefeated in the regular season! 10-0! They also won the first district championship in 17 years. Consider that most of the team had not been born the last time this had occurred. Unfortunately, poor play saw them exit the playoffs in round 1. Coach Stephens realizes that in 3 years he has turned the culture and level of expectations around in the program. This year’s team is young and inexperienced with only 4 starters returning. He knows he and his staff will have to coach and develop young players quickly for the Braves to maintain their success from the prior year. Replacing great players is difficult in high school, and the Braves saw a great player Azende Rey graduate and head to play for Florida A&M. His younger brother, Juanyeh Thomas, (8 interceptions, 5 for TD’s), decided at the end of the school year to transfer to Niceville High School. Walton High has other players who will step up and help carry the load. OLB Dre Matthews (62 tackles, 15.5 TFL) is back and ready to help the Braves to return to the playoffs. Walton High School has one of the smallest enrollments of all 4A schools in the state of Florida. Currently they only have 32 players on the varsity roster. In spite of this, there is not one player on the roster that does not to expect to have a winning season this year.

The 2012 state championship is barely visible in the rear view mirror of the Northview Chiefs. The 2016 squad looks to erase the bitter taste of a subpar 2015 campaign and start fresh. “We were a young team last year with a very difficult schedule. Playing two 6A and two 4A teams was a challenge. We got off to a rough start and it hurt our confidence but I felt like we grew and matured as a team last year. We return a large group of seniors this year who we will count on to lead this team” said Coach Wheatley, the seven-year head coach of the Chiefs. Pointing to the eight returning starters on defense, Coach Wheatley is not coy about how that squad will play this season. “We’re going to get the most speed on the field as possible and play very aggressively – very”, he says. He also touts the return of Defensive Coordinator Derek Marshman as another reason to be optimistic. Marshman was on the defensive staff during the championship season. Jacob Weaver (LB – team leading 112 tackles in 2015), Justin Helton (DE/DT) and Jason Fischer (DE) anchor the defensive front. The offense returns five starters including multi-position star Luke Ward, who led the team in rushing and receiving in 2015. The holes up front will be opened by an experienced line of Dillon Clary, Hunter Cofield and Zach Payne. Coach Wheatley does worry about the lack of depth at his key skill positions and inexperience at running back when Ward is under center or split out wide. But he feels the QB position with either Ward or Seth Killiam is in good hands and the unit will be able to put pressure on the defense.

Looking at the Chief’s 2016 schedule, it is easy to pick out the game of Head Coach: Sid Wheatley the year. Coach Wheatley has it circled too. “Baker – It has decided the District Championship for many years now”. District: 1A-1 Stadium: Tommy Weaver Memorial Football Stadium

Statistical leaders in passing, rushing and receiving return to a potent offensive squad. A total of six starters on offense return for 2016. LEGEND Jim Goodman

Written and Photographed by: Arnold Gamber

Growing up across the street from the Blountstown High School Stadium destined Jim Goodman to spending most of his life working in the sport of football. Enjoying a career

that spanned from high school to the pinnacle of the National Football League, Jim has always had a special place in his heart for the panhandle. Having returned to Bonifay eighteen years ago, he was able to watch his sons play at Holmes County High School and settle in the area. Even today, Jim Goodman still has his hand in the sport of football.

Jim’s story begins with him graduating from Blountstown High School, attending Chipola Junior College, and spending the next two years at the University of Florida, graduating in 1974. One of the most important events that would happen to Jim in his life occurred while he was at Chipola Junior College: he met his future bride and wife of 41 years, Jennie. His first coaching job was as an assistant at Van Guard Ocala while Jennie was finishing pharmacy school in Gainesville. After they were married, Jim began his career in collegiate and professional football that would take him to the very top and then back to the Emerald Coast. Jim’s next stop was as a graduate assistant at the University of North Alabama for legendary coach Mickey Andrews. After going fulltime his second year in Florence, Alabama Jim moved on to the Head Coaching job at Marion Institute in Marion, Alabama. During his tenure as head coach at Marion, he met an individual that influenced his career in the future, Mike Shanahan, who at the time was the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida. Two seasons at Marion led to a coaching position at the United States Air Force Academy with Ken Hatfield. Interestingly, former Troy and Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey was the defensive coordinator on staff. In December of 1981, Jim Goodman took on an opportunity that not many people get a chance at. Valdosta State College was starting a football program and selected him as their first head coach. In a short 10 months, Jim fielded a team and began NCAA Division II play in the Gulf South Conference. The Blazers would finish 5-5 their first year. After 3 seasons, Jim stepped down as head coach to become the Athletic Director due to some health issues. Coach Goodman says that having three young children and only being 33 years old led him to this decision.

20 | itgsportsnetwork.com

An interesting side story in Coach Goodman’s career came in his first year during training camp. As one can imagine, it was a typical hot and humid August in South Georgia. So to motivate the players after a few grueling days, he came out to practice dressed in a stocking cap, parka, and ski gloves to downplay the heat. He laughs today and says, “I almost died.” He made it through that practice but nearly suffered from heat exhaustion from his efforts. Jim says it motivated the players to push through practice, but it still was not very smart. The call to return to coaching proved strong, and he reunited with Ken Hatfield at the University of Arkansas for three seasons. The next 10 years saw a two-year stretch with Steve Spurrier at the University of Florida and then rejoining Coach Hatfield at Clemson University and Rice University. In the spring of 1998, Coach Goodman renewed a relationship that would lead him on a different path in his football career. He took a position with the Denver Broncos as a regional scout. This led the Goodmans to move to Jennie’s hometown of Bonifay, Florida. The next 11 years saw Jim rise through the ranks of the Broncos with Coach Shanahan. In 2008, he was named Vice President of Player Personnel and Football Operations, but that also meant that the Goodmans would get to raise their children, Jeff, Nancy, and Tyler, in Bonifay. Two years later saw him move to Florida for good. The Denver Broncos underwent a leadership change and he was out. Initially he thought he would get back in, but for whatever reason, it did not happen. With some hindsight, he says it ended up not being a such bad thing. Currently Jim is the Deputy Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Holmes County School Board. His wife Jennie still works part time as a pharmacist in the area. Eldest son Jeff has a law practice in Chipley and youngest son Tyler is a physical therapist in Niceville. Daughter Nancy just recently moved to Atlanta with her family. Being close to their children and seven grandchildren is what life is about for Jim and Jennie today. With lots of family in the area, they are also close to both of their mothers who reside in the area. Coach Goodman says although he traveled all around the country, high school in the panhandle always stayed close to his heart. Over the years he heavily recruited in the Emerald Coast due to the quality of players and old school mentality found around here. “Friday night games still mean something to our area,” Jim says. “It is about town pride and bragging rights for the next year. Tradition and memories are built from the games played with almost everyone in attendance.”

“Football is one of the greatest sports to be involved in,” Jim went on to say. “It instills discipline, responsibility and develops character. Learning how to work as part of a team and life lessons are some of the intrinsic values one gains from playing.” Coach Goodman says he still receives calls and messages from his former players who thank him for the opportunities and lessons they learned playing for him. The resulting conversations and seeing how these young men have grown and developed means more to him then all the trophies and rings. It is all about giving back and enjoying the ride!

2015 District Record 0-3 2015 Overall Record 2-8 The Wildcats finished 2015 strong – winning 2 of 3 including a “w” against Region 5A champ West Florida. Entering his third year, Head Coach Charlie Ward is expecting that finish, a strong spring and 2016 pre-season to propel the 2016 Cats to where they expect to be, atop 6A. And the Wildcats will be looking to get to the top via the ground game. The ground game will be led by All-Everything Offensive Lineman Alex Leatherwood and his compatriots on the line Chris Flounlacker and Matthew Blum. QB Andre Hunt and RB Aaron Malory will be looking to hit the holes opened by the experienced line. Hunt will also have standout WR Mystikal McGhee who has proven speed to stretch the field. Coach Ward is excited about the opportunities to put points on the board. “We have been in this system for three years and

our guys are starting to understand what we are doing. We are looking to be balanced on offense and execute the fundamentals on each play. Playmakers need to make plays in order for the offense to be successful”, he stated. With six returning starters on defense, the Cats are focused on disciplined, assignment based football dependent upon good tackling and turning over the ball. Aaron Malory, Nick Berling, and Isaish White are an experienced line backing corp. Of course, opponents will have to get past a stout d-line led by Marsalis Jackson, Desmond Bettis and Olajuwon Lewis. Eric Goldsmith returns to prowl the secondary.

The mindset is changing in Lynn Haven. Coach Jeremy Brown has the Dolphins preparing for a breakout year. Quarterback Peyton Calhoun and Runningback Destin Coates (combined 36 TDs) are back and with 6 starters off last year’s defensive unit returning, this puts the playoffs well in their sites. Learning how to deal with adversity is a lesson this team dealt with last season and hopefully that experience will be a positive for the 2016 campaign. The Dolphins lost 5 games by a touchdown or less and suffered injuries to key players at crucial times in the season. So Coach Brown’s thoughts are to emphasize the importance of winning games with a team effort. A solid defensive front will anchor this unit for Mosley and 4 -year starter Trent Crum at Free Safety will bring experience and stability. The Hardrick brothers, DL Martavius and LB Jerian, will be counted on to provide solid efforts each game day. Look for DE Jamaal Henderson and CB John Miller to contribute in their roles. Explosive players RB Destin Coates (1403 yds. rushing) and QB Peyton Calhoun (1463 yds. passing) are being looked upon to be the workhorses. They will be depending on a young and inexperienced offensive line that will have to mature quickly for the Dolphins to be successful.

Head Coach: Kent Smith Stadium: Patriots Stadium District: 6A-2 It’s hard replacing a legend. Many pundits would tell you not to be the man to follow THE MAN. Kent Smith is that guy.

After 23 straight winning seasons (1991 – 2013), the team has struggled the past three seasons, going a combined 12-16. Legendary Coach Mickey Lindsey is no longer a fixture on the sidelines at Patriot Stadium. But make no mistake, Kent Smith is no Johnny Come Lately, having spent 22 years with the program. But now it’s his program and the expectations are on his shoulders. And he has high expectations of his own.

“I expect to be a physical football team. We should be better on defense and grow into the offense. We want to compete at the highest level” he said. And there will be a lot of new sights on the field this year for Pace. Coach Smith is installing a 2 back, gun offense. With only 2 returning starters on offense, he feels it’s a good time to change. Of course, when one of the two returners is star running back Anthony Johnson (2114 yards, 298 carries, 7.1 YPC, 25 TD’s) it makes the transition a little easier. Cameron Bozeman will be counted on to stretch the field from his wide-out position. The defense is in a much better position and will be leaned on heavily in the early games while the new offense gains some much needed experience. Defensive End Jaxon Adams and Lineman Baily Clark will be counted on to take care of business up front, while linebackers Layne Plant (team leader in tackles – 69) and Ashtain Davis will fill the gaps. The real strength will be the experienced trio in the secondary. Vito Orlando, Tony Gibson and Riley Fields will dare any QB to challenge them.

Coach Kersey has taken quite the challenge in taking on the job of turning the Royals football program around. Not only did he see two 1000 yard rushers graduate, he only has 7 total returners for this upcoming year. “We are very young and we need a lot of practice and playing experience for us to become the championship caliber team we desire to be” states Coach Kersey. “The players are very coach-able and have a desire to be successful and make the community proud of them, and that is what makes this job worth it,” he says. On top of that, the Royals have 7 players with over a 3.4 GPA. Look for 6’6” 320 lb. offensive lineman, Cade Diamond to be in the forefront on the offensive side and senior linebacker Matthew Saylor, last year’s leading tackler to head up the defense. This season may have some up and downs for the Royals but they will be better for it as they work hard to make it a successful one.

Friday nights in the fall for the city of Milton are big events. The whole community gathers at Haywood Hanna Stadium to support their Panthers. Coach Marsh and this year’s team are ready to give them something to cheer about. Turning in a winning season last year and barely missing out on the playoffs, this team is poised to take the next step. The offense will be the strength for Milton this year with returning Quarterback Aubrey Williams (1576 yds. Passing) Center Cody Harris anchoring the middle of the line, and Receivers Marquise McRoy and Cameron Shelton. The Panthers plan on building their play calling around these players to maximize their assets. The challenge will be to find 11 players to step up and gel on defense. With very little experience, the Panthers will have to prepare week by week until this younger bunch comes together. Fortunately, as Coach Marsh relates “we have developed a team unity of all for each other.” He has a group of eager players ready for the challenge. The 2016 Milton High Panthers plan on building on last year’s success and going the next step of returning to the playoffs. Also they plan to live up to the history and tradition of Milton football.

Although last season was a struggle the Crusaders persevered to make the playoffs, the 9th time in 11 seasons Catholic’s football team has achieved this mark. Coach Greg Seibert is hoping to capitalize off of this momentum for the upcoming year. With 14 returning starters, 9 on the offense, they are optimistic about having a much better year. Leading rusher Abram Smiley (984 yards) will be coming back for his sophomore campaign. In front of him, he will have offensive linemen Ethan Watson and Blake Brazewell. At receiver, the Crusaders will tout Kerrick Teamer and AJ Yates who have proven they can play. COACH SEIBERT STATES “WE JUST WANT TO BE

The goal of the coaching staff this past offseason was to improve the overall athleticism of the team and they will look at some of the better players going both ways on offense and defense. “Every year our goal is to compete for the state championship”, says Seibert. “Our team this year is focused and has been working each day with this in mind”. Although every game is important, the Crusaders are eyeing the second game of the year. They will host the Gulf Breeze Dolphins in a non-district matchup. As one can imagine, this is more about bragging rights!

For the Smell

of the Grass

Written by: Rebecca Stroud | Photos Provided by: Dr. Burkhart’s Office

If you live in the southeastern region of the United States and follow college sports at all, you’ve heard of the Florida State University Seminoles. You probably know some of the players, if not all. You might even know who the coaches are. There’s one man, however, you may not have heard of yet. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Scott Burkhart, the neuropsychologist for the Seminoles. He diagnoses, monitors, and treats concussions and other head injuries for the team. So what does a neuropsychologist actually do? Basically, they deal with how the brain and our behaviors are connected. When I asked Dr. Burkhart why he opted for the psychology route, he said, “I wanted a field with more unknowns than medicine.” Considering how new the field of concussion study is, he made an excellent choice. Recently, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) has become one of the most well known phrases pertaining to concussions, especially concussions related to sports. CTE is a degenerative disease of the brain that occurs when a person is repeatedly subjected to impact-related brain injuries and lets them go untreated. We’ve known about CTE occurring in boxers, like Muhammad Ali, since the 1920s, but in those days we called it dementia pugilistica. Symptoms of CTE can be very similar to those of Alzheimer’s and dementia, but manifest in people much younger than the typical

Alzheimer’s patient. Dr. Burkhart sees between 3,000 & 5,000 concussions per year, with about 750-1,000 of those happening during the fall. He sees concussions in cheerleaders and people who play soccer, volleyball, ice hockey, football, and lacrosse. In his line of work, he rarely sees “repeat concussions,” or concussions that occur backto-back with no time for the brain to heal in between. These are the concussions that can lead to CTE. For many, CTE has a scary and heavily negative connotation. Dr. Burkhart has a slightly different stance on the subject. When I asked his opinion about the public’s understanding of CTE and the causes of the disease, he said, “It’s not as scary as it has been presented.” One of the reasons concussions are so much more prominent now is because the symptoms are often visually manifested, meaning our eyesight is affected. Kids & Millenials spend a large portion of the day looking at some kind of screen, so when our eyes don’t work we know about it. The next question is, can we prevent these concussions? According to Dr. Burkhart, other than “wrapping our heads in 10 inches of bubble wrap,” there’s no real 100% effective prevention for concussions. Helmets are great, but they don’t keep the brain from moving inside the skull, which is what causes concussions. Education is the first line of defense. When concussions happen, go to the doctor.

More importantly, go to the right doctor. Concussions are brain injuries and should be checked out by a specialist. As Dr. Burkhart said, “I wouldn’t take my 4 year old to urgent care for a cavity.” Dr. Burkhart hails from Oregon, but now lives in Tallahassee with his wife and two sons. From a young age, he has had a love for sports. He spent his childhood on the soccer and baseball fields, and like many other young American athletes, he fell in love with the lifestyle. He said one of his favorite things about working in his field and with the Seminoles is that he still gets to be in the athletic world. “I can still remember the way the grass smelled,” he said, with the air of someone talking about their first love. Eventually, Dr. Burkhart’s love for sports meshed with an interest in psychology. “I wanted to know how psychology and sports meshed.” The joining of the two passions lead him to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and his Doctorate degree Clinical Psychology from George Fox University. After graduating with is PsyD, he moved to Pennsylvania to do his fellowship in the sports concussion program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Now he spends his professional time researching, preventing, and treating concussions while working for the Seminoles and directing the Regional Concussion Center at Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic, and of course, enjoying the smell of the grass.

Q&A WITH DR. Burk hart ITG sat down with Dr. Burkhart to ask him about the safety of sports for young athletes and some of the possible implications and possibilities of head trauma. With all the attention on this issue today we wanted to get his expert opinion on this matter. ITG: How safe are modern day sports for kids? Dr. Burkhart: Modern day sports walk a delicate line when the conversation of safety is raised. On one end of the continuum, education and technology have never been better. However, sport specialization and kids playing one sport year round can be potentially problematic. Overall, I would say modern sports are very safe, but the threats to safety have changed. ITG: Is enough being done to prevent and treat concussions? Dr. Burkhart: More can always be done; education continues to be a significant limiting factor. This is even more problematic in outlying and rural areas where access to a concussion specialist is limited. Science is evolving and the manner in which the injury is managed is constantly improving. But, access to resources and better education would be areas where more can always be done. ITG: Do you have concerns if we lose sports like football, would we lose the ability for kids to develop team building characteristics, character development opportunities? Dr. Burkhart: I have concerns with declining participation rates in sports like football, but not from the character development end. I believe kids can develop character in an array of activities. My concern’s with the decline in participation in football is more associated with two factors. First, childhood obesity and lack of exercise are a major concern. Kids today

have such easy access to technology that they often miss out on opportunities to be active. Second, a large amount of fear around football participation in particular is not well formulated or educated. Parents and kids should educate themselves before making decisions on which sports to participate. There is an inherent level of risk in many sports or activities, however sports teach many valuable life lessons. ITG: What do you see as the future of the sport of football? Dr. Burkhart: There is a lot of talk about taking off face masks, expanding roster size, or making football more like rugby. The view of the future of football likely varies depending who you ask. My personal belief is that the game needs two things. First of all, a lot more education about this issue. I am probably sounding like a broken record, but athletes, coaches, parents, and everyone involved need to be better educated regarding concussion injuries. The second point is I believe football needs to focus on respect. If I am playing football and I respect my competitors, I can still go out and try to win without inherently attempting to hurt my fellow competitor. If I play the game to win, but not injure another human being, then my focus is in the right place. Football should be played with technique, intelligence, and respect. I don't need to hit a guy in the head with a dirty hit out of anger to win a game. ITG: Would you let your child play football? Dr. Burkhart: Absolutely, I have two boys and if they want to play football I would definitely let them play. Football isn't scary and neither are concussions if you treat and manage the injury appropriately.

If there is a team everyone in the panhandle is anxious to see play this fall, it is the Pine Forest Eagles. From an outside perspective, it seems all the pieces are in place. It takes a lot of intangibles to put together a championship caliber team, but you couldn’t have a more experienced captain at the helm than Head Coach Jerry Pollard. Coach Pollard has been part of 3 state championship teams in his tenure at Pine Forest. Last season had its ups and downs for the Eagles, Coach Pollard missed the first half of the season with health issues. The team struggled with inconsistent play during the same time. But by the end of the regular season, they were moving in the right direction. The Pine Forest offense returns 9 starters, including quarterback Xavier Saulsberry (1602 yds. passing), running back Jaden Gardner (1266 yds. rushing), and leading receiver Jacob Copeland (39 receptions, 771 yds.). Four of the five starting offensive linemen are back as well. If the Eagles offense can find their consistency early, this unit could put up some big numbers. On the other side of the ball, there are only 3 starters returning. Linebackers Wesley Philpot and De’arius Howard and DL Nikierce James are the returners on the defensive unit. The Eagles have a lot of untried talented young players eager to earn a spot. The coaching staff will have to grow and develop this squad quickly. As the season progresses, the Pine Forest Eagles will be in a position to control their own destiny.

Crestview Bulldogs

Expectations for the 2016 Bulldogs are on the rise after a disappointing 2015 campaign left them 6-5 on the season. Although they had injuries to some key personnel early in the season, Coach Tim Hatten says “that is just excuses, we had opportunities to win several games, and we didn’t execute well enough to win.” This year they might be a little young but they are very athletic. As a whole they might be the most athletic skill group in the panhandle. Heading up the offense is senior quarterback Rusty Moorer. His goal is to get the ball into the hands of his talented receiver corp. Last year’s leading receiver senior Andrew Adkins, senior Keenon Redd, and junior Keon Voisin. Returning offensive linemen Jonathon Glisson and Bryson Norris will help give Moorer some time to get the ball off. Defensively the Bulldogs have 5 returning starters and the coach’s main focus is to put the players in a position to make plays. There is a slew of younger talented players working hard to earn playing-time. Coach says he will play a few players on both sides of the ball as situations call for it, Keon Voisin being one of these talented players. Placekicker Cody Trawick will give the team some consistency not just on the field but also in the classroom with his 4.2 GPA. Friday nights still mean a lot to the Crestview community. The Bulldogs fans will fill Jack Foster Stadium to support their red and black and to see their team succeed.

Having won three National Championships in the last two years, the 8U Colts and 12U Browns are looking to compete for the title again this year. The Colts have a two year run of the title and are looking to defend it for the 3rd straight year. While the Browns came up a bit short this past year they are hungry to regain the title. These are a few of the players who will play pivotal roles for these teams this fall. Do not be surprised if you see their names in a few years for some of our local high schools. Head Coach: Kevin Womble Stadium: Memorial Stadium District: 1A-2

In his first season back home, Head Coach Kevin Womble managed a 4-6 season, 2 more wins than the team’s prior 2 season’s wins total. But more importantly to Kevin who played at Holmes and is from Bonifay was changing the culture and setting expectations. He remembers when Holmes County was a force in the panhandle and his goal is to return the Blue Devils to that level. With over 80 student-athletes out for varsity and JV programs, the future is looking bright. This season is looking promising for the Blue Devils with 15 starters from last year returning and an offense that averaged 30 points per game. Look for their offense to pick up where they left off with QB Shane Sellars, RB Justice Bice, and 4 returning offensive linemen, Ty English, Alex Mancill, Bailey Rich, and Clayton Williams. On the other side of the ball, returning linebacker Juwan Shack, last year’s leading tackler, leads a group of 7 returners. The Blue Devil’s defense was proud of having a +11 turnover ratio last year. If they can keep their lineman healthy this team has a chance to make a statement this season.

Another area this team can take pride in is there are 7 starters with over a 3.4 GPA. As per Coach Womble “We try to teach them the qualities to be good football players but those same qualities will enable them to be good citizens, husbands, and fathers.” The city of Bonifay hosts an annual rodeo at Memorial Stadium each October. So after midseason, they will have big patches of sand on their home field.

District: 6A-1 Head Coach: Mike Davis Stadium: Emmitt Smith Field

After an 8-1 record in the 2014 campaign, 2015 saw the Gators take a slight step back. Head Coach Mike Davis is entering his fourth year as head coach has an amazing 24 years with the program and he is expecting a return to regional prominence. “I expect us to be a much better team on offense. The offense should carry this team”, said Coach Davis. With half of their 2015 wins against powerhouse programs West Florida, Niceville, and Lake City, the potential for the 2016 Gator squad is evident. Coach Davis is looking to build the team’s depth while replacing highly talented seniors Jabir Frye, Trae Barry and Seth Richardson. That trio led the team in rushing, passing, and receiving. But with 8 returning starters on offense and a new backfield consisting of quarterback Z’kari Blocker and running backs Ray Samuel, Amarquez Moore, and Martin McGhee, the Gators are primed to make the scoreboard spin. Stopping the opponents in 2016 should come easier, especially against the run, with an experienced d-line led by defensive end Shountrell Hills and tackles Daishon Folson and Aundre Pleas. “Last season, we had key players hurt during our biggest games. We need to build depth and spread the ball around more. Our biggest challenge is not to look ahead. We play a good team every week. Focus on that team and improve each day and we will have a ‘winning’ season. Right now, the total focus is game #1, the first Thursday of the season – it’s the first one that counts.” says Coach Davis.

2015 District Record 0-4 2015 Overall Record 5-5 Head Coach Jim Anderson really likes the 2016 Bulldogs. “We had some good wins last year and built on the success that we had in 2014 after going winless in 2013. This group has been through the fire and they have stuck with it. They know what it takes” says the coach entering his 16th year with Freeport. Building on the first non-losing season since 2012, the Bulldogs return seven starters on both sides of the ball. But there is a catch – those 14 starters are actually nine players. Having less than 25 players annually, and that’s 25 TOTAL on the team, most players have to play on both sides of the ball. The reality is some never leave the field from the opening kick-off to the final whistle. Conditioning, work ethic and most importantly, avoiding injury are always on the mind of Coach Anderson.

Decker rushed for an incredible 1,014 yards on 192 carries (5.3 YPC) and Seay accounted for 20 touchdowns (16 rushing, 4 passing).

On the defensive side of the ball, the line will again be anchored by Dalton Simpler and Shannon Carswell. Oh, and Chris Decker at linebacker and Zack Seay roaming the secondary.

Coach Anderson smiles and says, “we have a very smart and committed team, great chemistry, work ethic, and cohesion. We have more talent and speed than we typically have.” Perhaps that is the key word for Freeport in 2016 – more.

A Coach’s Wife! Written by: Arnold Gamber | Photography by: Michelle Smith

Managing the chaos of a family of three young children while working full-time is usually enough to challenge any woman. Add to that mix that your husband is a high school head football coach and she really has her hands full. Mindy Clayton, like many wives and mothers out there, keeps it balanced because as she sees it, this is what she is supposed to do. The wife of Gulf Breeze High School Head Football Coach Bobby Clayton is no stranger to this life; she is the daughter of legendary Pine Forest High School Head Coach Jerry Pollard. So her life has not taken a strange twist, she is doing what she has known her entire life.

In The Game | 45

Mindy and Bobby are the parents of three children, 11 yearold Brock, and 6 year-old twins Lilly and Brooks. Like many families, there is always something going on. They are active at Gulf Breeze United Methodist, Little League, where Bobby coaches Brock’s team and other usual kid activities. Throw in two demanding teaching careers and leading a football team and there is not much time to catch one’s breath. And at this printing, they are in the process of purchasing a new home and selling their old one.

SO EACH DAY IS A NEW ADVENTURE AT THE CLAYTON HOUSEHOLD BUT MINDY WOULD NOT HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY. Growing up as a coach’s child, Mindy says she did not really notice how much her mother Katie did. Besides raising her brother Beau, Sister Olivia and herself, her mother was a full time teacher. She sees her mother as a role model for what she has embraced as a mother and a wife. She recognizes the dedication and sacrifices coaches make for the young people in their charge so it is all part of the package of being married to one. Laughingly, she does say Bobby does a few more things around the house than her father might have. The couple does find time for each other whenever possible. Her teaching position at Gulf Breeze Middle School allows Mindy to see her husband every day at lunchtime with the adjoining campuses. They have been married for fifteen years and still with the kids try to do all they things they enjoyed as a couple, skiing, hunting and boating. She says she has recently taking up hunting. She had Bobby teach her how to shoot a rifle and what to look for. According to Mindy, she is not sure what is the best reward; a trophy buck or several hours of peace and quiet in the woods.

As a coach’s kid and having three of her own, Mindy knows there are some great experiences her children will be part of. Being around the team and in a way being part of the team is unique. She says it never really dawned on her how special it was until she came back from college and saw all her mother and father did for the school and their family. Maybe it was having a coach as a father that has helped her be stronger in dealing some challenges life has thrown at her. Mindy admits there are days things can pile on, but she says she just tells herself this is what I signed up for and reminds herself how good she has it and she always tries to remember what is important. Mindy says it will be a little different this fall being in the stands at Gulf Breeze High School instead of Pine Forest. Yes, she went to every game to support her father and Bobby who was an assistant coach, and it was her alma mater and where she met her future husband. She is planning on making all the games with the children to support Bobby this season. Mindy has not made up her mind where she will sit for the games yet, but there is one thing that really bothers her about sitting in the stands. It seems today some fans feel they can yell and shout personal comments about the coaches and players. Some of these comments can be quite hurtful especially when they are about your husband. But what really bothers Mindy is how disrespectful these actions are to the men who give up a lot to work with the kids and she adds, trust me, it is not for the money. “High School athletics is about teaching young people about developing character

46 | itgsportsnetwork.com

“HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS IS ABOUT TEACHING YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT DEVELOPING CHARACTER AND RESPONSIBILITY, NOT AS MUCH ABOUT THE WINS AND LOSSES. PEOPLE SHOULD BE MORE APPRECIATIVE OF THE WORK THEY DO AND TIME OUR COACHES’ GIVE.”

and responsibility, not as much about the wins and losses. People should be more appreciative of the work they do and time our coaches’ give.” Football season is drawing near and Mindy will be busy preparing for the season. But it will not be two-a-day’s or drawing up x’s and o’s, but overseeing the Clayton’s new household during Bobby’s busy time. Supporting the Dolphins in Bobby’s inaugural season is very important to her, but being a family is also. Like her mother, Mindy will be cheering this fall and most importantly being MOM!

In The Game — Emerald Coast salutes all coach’s spouses and the sacrifices they make so their husband and wives can stay In The Game and make a positive impact on young people.

Reflecting over last year’s season which was disappointing by not making the playoffs, Head Coach Paul Tisa realizes that it is the small things that made a difference. Going into this season his plans include preparing his players better physically and mentally. “We lost several games in the 4th quarter and I don’t plan on letting that happen to us this year”. Coach Tisa is assuming responsibility and will take over as the offensive coordinator as well this season. The Seahawks will have a new defensive coordinator as well with Correlle Banjoman taking over the reins. One player that has been a vital cog for the Seahawks and is returning this year is Austin Garofalo. This young man was the leading receiver last year on top of starting at cornerback and serving as the placekicker. South Walton returns 5 players on each side of the ball, but Garofalo, Jireh Crittenden, and Ben Balfanz each play both ways. Balancing playing time and trying to keep the best players on the field will be a big part of Coach Tisa and his staff finding success in the 4th quarter. The “Battle of the Bay” versus Freeport High School is THE matchup those in this part of Walton County look forward to. The 2 schools are only separated by a few miles and Choctawhatchee Bay, straight down Highway 331 from each other. This game is a matter of pride for these communities.

This past year the Raiders got to enjoy something many programs never experience. They ran the table in their regular season, that’s right 10-0. Unfortunately, they lost by 1 point to the Tate Aggies in the first round of the playoffs and their season ended early. Look for Navarre to be a force again this year with senior OL Nick Brahms and RB Michael Carter leading the way.

Entering his 2nd year as Head Coach with the Vernon High School Yellow Jackets, Willie Spears knows it will be a challenge to repeat last year’s success. They won their district, went 7- 0 at home and defeated rival Chipley High for the first time in 5 years. With only 6 returners from last year squad, Spears and his coaching staff will have to do a lot of coaching of younger players to prepare them for the season.

A bright spot for the Yellow Jackets is returning Quarterback Kody Hagens. A lot of leadership responsibility will fall on this young man’s shoulders. New Head Bobby Clayton has his hands full trying to turn around the Gulf Breeze program. Even though they are 6A, the Dolphins only have 40 athletes out for football. Coach Clayton is very familiar with the program, since he played for the Dolphins. Having coached in the Pensacola area for over 15 years he believes Gulf Breeze can be a program to be reckoned with in time. One of the strengths for the Dolphins this upcoming year is the offensive statistical leaders are all returning. Quarterback Tyler Phelps threw for 1161 yards, Running Back Tristan Covell rushed 604 yards. rushing, and Receiver Cole Sheppard with 77 receptions, 820 yards, 12 TDs. On the offensive line, they have veteran John Learned and Dimiti Pejic setting the wall so Phelps will have time to distribute the ball. With this experience at these key positions, Coach Clayton feels like he can get it started. 5 Defensive starters return from last year. Defensive Linemen Liam Gessler and Matthew Hawkins, Linebacker Logan Green, and defensive backs Walter Yates III and interception leader Matthew Demahey. The plan for this year is to get all 11 defenders flying to the ball. Coach Clayton feels like his senior leadership and the team’s hard work will show results this Fall. It will be the first step in changing the culture of the program and getting the players to believe they can win. He also wants to instill a level of competition in the Dolphins where they will finish plays and not give up. On another note, Coach Clayton wants to see his alma mater become a playoff contender each year and more Gulf Breeze students come out for the team.

Having only 25 players on the roster for this upcoming fall, Coach Rob Armstrong and staff will have to be innovative. Rutherford High School has seen decreasing enrollment these last few years. This has resulted in fewer numbers out for football. Making the playoffs for the 1st time in 13 years hopefully will challenge a few more to take up the sport. The Rams have another achievement they can be proud of. The Rams Football Team won the Bay County Academic Champions Award with a 3.3 team GPA. As hard as they are working on the field, these guys are also striving hard in the classroom.

Trying to be competitive in their district with such a small squad, Coach Armstrong is working every angle to give his team an advantage. Since only 4 starters return from last year, he knows they will have to be in great condition to play a full game. Many of the better players will have to play both sides of the ball. Veteran players as LB T. Williams, DB EJ Foster, and DB Malik Gibson will be counted on heavily to contribute to the Rams success. One can definitely say the Rams are making progress as scholars and athletes. 50 | itgsportsnetwork.com

The Tornadoes made it to the state playoffs for the first time in 12 years and he hopes to see them make it 2 years in a row. Returning Defensive Coordinator Sean Killets hopes to maintain consistency, Coach Watkins hopes to establish Bay High School as a team to be reckoned with. Putting in a new offensive system will be a challenge in hopes of scoring a lot of points in the fall. Quarterback Sam Clement and receivers Jayvion Wilson and Keyshawn Woodfaulk will have to help the offensive players get up to speed. As per Coach Watkins, “we just have to take it day by day and hope to get better each day. Look for Inside Linebacker Demond Ross to head up the Tornadoes defenders with fellow returners Anthony Hayes DE, Jayvion Wilson SS, Joe Boehm ILB, and Keyshawn Woodfaulk FS. These players got a taste last season of what it is to win and want to feel that again. Going into the fall the Tornadoes biggest challenge are themselves. They are working hard to be a little better with each workout. Another hurdle Bay High will have to face is playing their home games at Dean Bozeman High Schools Stadium. Gavlak Stadium, their home field is undergoing renovations this year and will be unavailable.

Only in your mind – Camden “Bone” Siefert has had quite a summer. Af-

ter being profiled in the June edition of In The Game Magazine, he just can’t go anywhere without being recognized. On a recent shopping trip to Dave Bowen Sporting Goods, he not only was a celebrity, but he also had to sign autographs for 30 minutes. That was just the beginning. As was pointed out in the article, “Bone” is following in the footsteps of Jim Abbott, who made it all the way to the big leagues. After seeing the magazine, Mr. Abbott was so impressed with Camden, that he sent him an autographed picture and a hand written letter. “Bone” is now practicing with his football team and looking forward to First Grade.
