Ethical Fashion

[eth•i•cal fash•ion]

noun • a popular trend, esp. in styles of dress and ornament that are morally correct • an approach to the design and manufacture of clothing which maximises benefits to people and communities while minimising impact on the environment

Glasgow is internationally recognized as a creative design city and is home to the primary retail destination in the UK outside of London. As our society is becoming more aware of the environment, ethical fashion has become an important concept in the world of fashion design. The Ethical Fashion Association has decided to build design studios to encourage young talent to develop their own collections and to forge connections with the industry by following the ethical approach to fashion design. The networking process is crucial for a young designer, therefor frequent events will take place. Fashion shows are the perfect opportunity for designers to present potential clients and press with their latest creations. The studio will be located in the West End of Glasgow; the hub of independent designers and stores.

Due to the economic state of the UK for the past years it has become increasingly difficult for graduates and young designers to find jobs or to set up their own studio. Glasgow has a large community of local independant designers that are extremely supportive of each other. The Ethical Fashion Studio will give the opportunity for young talent to share a space and facilities. This will be ideal for designers to network and become familiar with the industry and most importantly, making it financially easier for designers to start their own design label.

The Botanic Gardens Garage is the oldest motor garage surviving in Glasgow and quite possibly anywhere in the UK. Built in Vinicombe Street in the West End from 1906 to 1912 and currently abandoned, it is of great significance to blow new life into Glasgow’s heritage. Iconic elements of the building will be perserved to keep the character and history of the building alive.
