May 17-19: What the Play?High School/ Middle School Show
Be sure to catch the Middle School & High School devised theater production of What Da Play? next week. “Devising theater is a process that involves directing, playwriting, researching, improving and playing. It is travel by a collective group, realized from one starting point, without a clue how it is going to end, but with a specific goal: Create a work of theater, bring a complete, new piece to be presented in front of the audience,” Arturo Wong, Director, explains. This incredible, premier event should not be missed. Tickets will be on sale in front of the MS/HS Cafeteria during lunch next week and can also be purchased at the door before the show. Show times are: Thursday, May 18 at 4:00pm (busses provided afterwards) Friday, May 19 at 7:00pm Saturday, May 20 at 5:00pm

PARENT EVENT ES, MS, HS Parent Coffee: Standards Based Reporting On Wednesday, May 17 at 8:30AM the elementary division is hosting a parent coffee about Standards Based Reporting, an ongoing initiative from our strategic plan. In the coming 2017-18 school year, there will be changes to report cards in the elementary school and an increase in feedback to students and parents. We are going to use this parent coffee to start talking about what those changes are at the elementary division. There will also be representatives from middle and high school to be there to share information about how changes at the elementary division will be integrated and supported as students transition to middle and high school. While the changes impact next year’s K-5 elementary students, this coffee is open to all ISP parents. If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, we encourage you to attend. We look forward to seeing you at this event.

EXPLORING ROADS IN PREK Pk3 is currently studying Roads. Children have become curious about the different types of roads they see, where roads go, how roads are made. A study of roads is a great opportunity for children to explore their interests. We encourage you to talk with your child about the different kinds of roads in your area and ask: What is it made of? What features does it have? Point out interesting features, such as traffic lights, signs, gutters, steel plates, crosswalks, ramps, and overpasses.
After many weeks of awesome learning, PK4 finished our unit on recycling. We are confident that students have understood the importance of our planet and its resources, and will continue “saving the Earth” any way they can. It’s difficult to believe, but the year is coming to an end, and to ensure a smooth transition into the next school year, we will be starting our last unit, “Getting ready for Kindergarten”, next week. Hope you are as excited as we are!

Students in 2nd grade are M.A.D (Making A Difference) Students in Grade 2 have spent time on recent units working on global issues that we can help with her at ISP. Connected to Earth Day and our school working towards becoming an eco-school (see more information here https://www.nwf.org/Eco-Schools-USA/Become-an-Eco-School/Awards/ Green-Flag-Award-Criteria.aspx) students have been gathering data and running initiatives on how to reduce our environmental impact. All students have contributed and we are sharing one video here from a student who worked with the elementary administrators to make a video to show us all how we can do better at being thoughtful about our school resources. ISP Camp—Information coming soon! Our annual camp will be offered this year in June and July. Under the guidance of Kary Almengor, we have made some big changes of the program that are going to be fun for students and supportive for families. MAKING CONNECTIONS THROUGH SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies changes, like so many other things in life. What was once textbook chapters and lecture has become an active and engaged classroom. Social Studies purpose is to connect student thinking with real world contexts from local to global scales. Why is social studies important for ISP students? Social Studies helps students:
Understand the facts, concepts, principles, and perspectives that shape the world they live in.
Apply learning to complex situations and contexts.
Think critically about important issues and communicate their findings engage in the processes of problem solving and inquiry.
The skills and abilities required for these ambitious goals include critical thinking and problem solving, initiative and selfdirection, and media literacy—not necessarily business as usual in the typical Social Studies classroom. These goals necessitate skills that are often not even seen as skills and might not be measurable and identifiable in their own right—but they will create a better student. In recent weeks 6th grade students have “settled” Mesoamerica. Their analysis of the geography, the resources provided, and a cost-benefit analysis allowed them to make informed decisions that would assist in the survival of their culture. 7th grade students have studied the geographic and historical influence and impact of Ancient Chinese achievements. Students examined the quality and reliability of the sources of information, experimented with new mediums for presenting the information, and collaborated effectively to produce a final project. 8th grade students have been engaged in meaningful debates on immigration executive policy. Teams have to research, prepare, analyze, synthesize, and formulate well-reasoned and convincing opinions.

Gabriel owns and operates Controles Nacionales, a company which he started to take full advantage of his skills in computer science and embedded programing.

Gabriel shows students and teachers how the computer based monitoring system he built sends alerts to his mobile phone when a alarm is triggered. During the visit students discussed their interest in several projects that would require similar skills in programming and engineering.

TRAILBLAZING DOLPHIN RUNNERS Track & Field / Cross Country students have been meeting every Friday until 5:15pm. We are working on improving skills such as pacing, trail running, high jump, throwing events such as javelin, shot put and discus; series and recovery time, core workouts, stretching routines, etc. In addition, since April an increasing number of students and parents have been meeting every Sunday morning to train at Parque Metropolitano. In this stunning location, the group has been running an average of 5k through trails surrounded by tropical vegetation and fauna, often spotting agoutis (“neques”), coatis (“gato solo”), sloths and hearing the roars of howling monkeys. These students will participate in the race NB Aullador on the 11th of June. If you are interested in joining us or want to have more information, please contact Mr. Sanchis (HS) or Mr. Binder (MS).
