2017 Year in review
t was a challenging year for refugee resettlement. On January 27, the white House issued the first of three travel bans eliminating admission to the US for many Muslim refugees and drastically reducing the overall number of US refugee admissions from 110,000 to 50,000. as a result, refugee settlement in St. Louis declined by 59% from the previous year.

working with our many partners including the St. Louis Mosaic Project, we promoted a more welcoming commu-
nity. we made hundreds of presentations, served on work groups, and advocated for a vibrant multicultural community, especially through Festival of nations. During the year, the asian american Chamber of Commerce, Boeing institute of international Business of St. Louis University, and Better Family Life inc. made leadership awards to anna Crosslin and the international institute.

or almost 100 years, the International Institute of St. Louis has operated St. Louis’ Welcoming Center for New Americans. Our activities are many and varied in three pillars of service: Immersion, Investment and Inclusion. In 2017, our 91 staff provided services to 7,444 clients in St. Louis and at our branch office in Springfield, MO. Almost 1,000 volunteers donated more than 18,700 hours of service.

With multi-year support from the Lutheran Foundation, we began developing new models of community engagement for refugee resettlement. We also directed an occupational study of St. Louis immigrants to assess the extent of underemployment and unemployment among foreignborn professionals. Funded by the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank Trustee, the results will help us refine our recertification and Career Path services and align them with job vacancies, especially in STEM fields. A summer camp for refugee kids debuted in collaboration with the JCRC. Webster Arts offered arts and craft sessions. In US Citizenship preparation classes, nearly half of adult immigrants with literacy- to beginning-level English demonstrated progress toward naturalization. Achievement of US Citizenship is essential for newcomers since studies show that immigrants with US Citizenship earn higher hourly wages.

Through the International Institute Community Development Corporation (IICDC), our subsidiary economic development corporation, we started or expanded 39 immigrant-owned businesses. Busey. In the fall, our personal credit builder loan program debuted. With support from the Bawa Fund, we made four credit builder loans; 100% of borrowers are making timely repayments. Almost 50% of our clients obtained or maintained a prime credit score. The Empowering Refugee Women Program provided financial literacy to 40 at-risk refugee women with support from MasterCard. II Global Farms continued to draw a substantial number of volunteers, especially service learning groups.

The Institute’s Festival of Nations with presenting sponsor, Wells Fargo Advisors, drew 150,000 visitors to Tower Grove Park. 60% of the audience was between 19 and 54. We made almost 150 speeches and presentations during the year. In addition, we posted 200 stories and information pieces on our social media sites, reaching 12,000 followers. Institute staff appeared in almost 100 media stories or mentions. In December, we launched KYGV 102.9 LPFM, the Institute’s low power FM radio station. Throughout the year, we worked closely with numerous organizations, especially the St. Louis Mosaic Project, to introduce welcoming programs and activities. In collaboration with Casa de Salud and three other organizations, we launched the second year of the New American Alliance with support from the Missouri Foundation for Health.

Solid financial management enabled the Institute to complete the year with a modest surplus in spite of the funding volatility in our refugee resettlement program. Emergency support from the Lutheran Foundation and the Jewish community substantially assisted in defraying resettlement staff expenses during the 120-day resettlement pause enacted by the White House. In all, cash contributions surpassed 2016 by almost 40% as community members voiced their support in cash and volunteerism. By year end, the Institute’s first formal multi-year fund development plan was operationalized.
