The Argentine-bred sire was a tremendously talented runner – he was undefeated in three starts in his native country becoming champion miler before transferring to the US

where he went three-for-three, including a three-and-a-quarter length victory over Medaglia D’Oro in the Pacific Classic (G1). However, his sire Ride The Rails (by Cryptoclearance, a Fappiano horse who was a useful but never a particularly fashionable sire) was only a Grade 3 winner, and sired only two other Grade 1 winners; one in Argentina and one in Uruguay. From a South American family, Candy Ride is out of a mare by the Blushing Groom horse Candy Stripes, a very successful sire in Argentina but a major disappointment when given a go in the US Candy Ride’s first crop has produced nine stakes winners, including the Grade 1 winners Capt. Candyman Can, Evita Argentina and Misremembered, and the graded scorers Chocolate Candy and El Brujo. His second crop, currently three-year-olds, also has a standout in the shape of Sidney’s Candy, who led from start to finish for an impressive triumph in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Sidney’s Candy has yet to be tested on dirt, or over the Derby distance, but there is reason to be optimistic about his capabilities to handle both. To begin with, Candy Ride’s remarkable track record-breaking victory in the Pacific Classic (G1) was achieved over 1m2f on dirt. Sidney’s Candy’s dam Fair Exchange is a daughter of Storm Cat making Sidney’s Candy the third Grade 1 winner for the sire out of a mare by Storm Cat or a son. She is out of the Explodent mare Exchange winner of the Matriarch Stakes (G1), Santa Ana Handicap (G1) and Santa Barbara Handicap (G1), the last of these three being run over 1m2f. Exchange is a half-sister to the dam of South Australian Derby (G1) winner Blue Murder who stayed well, despite being by the sprinter Bluebird (Storm Bird, sire of Storm Cat). Exchange’s dam Wooly Willow is a half-sister to Steady Growth (Briartic), a champion juvenile in Canada and winner of the classic Queen’s Plate over 1m2f, and to Kingsbridge (Icecapade), a champion Canadian turf horse, and winner of the 1m4f Breeders’ Stakes. Briartic and Icecapade are both by Nearctic, also sire of Explodent, so bred on similar lines to Exchange. The stamina in the family may owe a lot to Sidney’s Candy’s fourth dam Crelita. She comes from a family nutured at the Royal Studs and is by Epsom Derby winner Crepello, out of Carmelita, a daughter of the French Derby winner Charlottesville. She was out of the Coronation Stakes winner and Oaks fourth Avila, who in turn was

by Epsom Derby and St. Leger winner, Hyperion. 265 - PROVIDENCIA STAKES, G2, Santa Anita, April 3, 9f 1 City To City (USA) 3 ch f City Zip (USA) - Stormbow (USA) (Storm Cat (USA)) 2 Andina (IRE) 3 ch f Singspiel (IRE) Fragrant Oasis (USA) (Rahy (USA)) 3 In The Slips (USA) 3 b f More Than Ready (USA) - Tjinouska (USA) (Cozzene (USA)) 266 - POTRERO GRANDE HANDICAP, G2, Santa Anita, April 3, 6f 110yds 1 Ventana (USA) 4 b c Toccet (USA) Full Figure (USA) (Polish Numbers (USA)) 2 Gato Go Win (USA) 4 b/br c City Place (USA) - Brooks N Boots (USA) (Odyle (USA)) 3 E Z’s Gentleman (USA) 5 b c Yankee Gentleman (USA) - Tensie’s Pro (USA) (Distinctive Pro (USA)) 267 - BUDWEISER ARCADIA HANDICAP, G2, Santa Anita, April 3, 8f 1 Compari (USA) 4 b g Redattore (BRZ) - Southern Charm (USA) (Dixieland Band (USA)) 2 Fluke (BRZ) 5 b/br c Wild Event (USA) Uff-Uff (BRZ) (De Quest (GB)) 3 Battle of Hastings (GB) 4 b g Royal Applause (GB) - Subya (GB) (Night Shift (USA)) 268 - OAKLAWN HANDICAP, G2, Oaklawn Park, April 3, 9f 1 Duke of Mischief (USA) 4 ch c Graeme Hall (USA) - My Lady Amelia (USA) (Real Courage (USA)) 2 Win Willy (USA) 4 gr/ro c Monarchos (USA) - City Fair (USA) (Carson City (USA)) 3 Jonesboro (USA) 8 ch c Sefapiano (USA) - Mom’s Command (USA) (Top Command (USA))

Afleet (Mr Prospector), Northern Afleet began his career inexpensively in Florida. He got off to a bright start with those crops and by the time his son Afleet Alex – a member of his third crop – won the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1), Northern Afleet had already moved to Taylor Made Farm. The first “post Afleet Alex” crop sired by Northern Afleet is now three, and its been quick to make an impact with Aegean winning last year’s Kentucky Juvenile Stakes (G3), Negligee, who won last year’s Alcibiades Stakes (G1) and the Californian-bred Evening Jewel, who broke through at the highest level with a game win in the Ashland Stakes (G1). Evening Jewel is also notable for being the first Grade 1 winner out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway (whose son, Eskendereya, ran away with the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) on the same day as Evening Jewel’s win). Giant’s Causeway’s first daughters were only four-year-olds when Evening Jewel was conceived, and he has had only 35 starters in that role, so has got off to a bright start. Intriguingly, Evening Jewel’s dam Jewel Of The Night is bred very similarly to Eskendereya as not only is she by Giant’s Causeway, but her dam is by General Meeting, a son of Seattle Slew out of an Alydar mare, so bred on an identical cross to as the dam of Eskendereya. This is a good west coast family developed by the late John C. Mabee family. The grand-dam, Jeweled Lady – who produced stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Saucey Evening to More Than Ready – is a sister to the top-class runner General Challenge, successful in the Pacific Classic (G1), Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1), to the stakes winner Western Hemisphere and is three-parts sister to Grade 1 winner Notable Career. The third dam Excellent Lady is out of Northern Dancer’s graded-winning daughter Northern Sea and is halfsister to Southern Halo, a multiple champion sire in Argentina. Southern Halo, who did not win a black-type race but was Grade 1 placed, was the best runner produced by Northern Sea and was grand-dam of multiple graded stakes winner Snow Dance. She was by Forest Wildcat, a son of Giant’s Causeway’s sire Storm Cat and so bred on similar lines to the dam of Evening Jewel. 270 - ILLINOIS DERBY, G3, Hawthorne, April 3, 9f 1 American Lion (USA) 3 b c Tiznow (USA) - Storm Tide (USA) (Carson City (USA))
