Change, a talented racemare who never won a stakes race, but who did take runner-up spot in the CCA Oaks (G1). Very Fair is a half-sister to the Storm Bird filly Spur Wing, who won the Carousel Handicap (G3) and who is grand-dam of English Group winner Nayyir, and Highest, runner-up in the St. Leger (G1) and Coronation Cup (G1) and a Graded winner in Dubai. Another half-sister to Very Fair, the Roberto daughter Make Change, won the Miss Liberty Stakes, but was also runner-up in five Grade 1 events. She is dam of Time Changes, a black-type winner in France, and grand-dam of Andromeda’s Hero, a graded winner and runner-up in the Belmont Stakes (G1). Equal Change is a half-sister to the Eclipse Stakes (G1) winner Solford, and she is out of a half-sister to Prove Out, a horse whose resume included a victory over Secretariat in the Woodward Stakes (G1). This is something of an historic family as it traces through Equal Venture, a sister to Triple Crown victor Assault, to Masda, a sister to none other than Man O’ War.

She is out of the Sir Cat mare Cat’s Fair and is the fourth stakes winner, and third graded scorer, by El Corredor out of a Storm Cat line mare. The mating was a pretty logical one as Crisp’s dam is a half-sister to Thorough Fair, the dam of Mr. Greeley’s Grade 1-winning two-year-old Whywhywhy (and also the Grade 2 winner Spellbinder). The grand-dam Very Fair is by Honest Pleasure and out of Equal

226 - SANTA ANITA HANDICAP, G1, Santa Anita, March 6, 10f 1 Misremembered (USA) 4 ch c Candy Ride (ARG) - Beyond Perfection (USA) (Quack (USA)) 2 Neko Bay (USA) 7 b/br c Giant’s Causeway (USA) - Brulay (USA) (Rubiano (USA)) 3 Dakota Phone (USA) 5 b g Zavata (USA) - World of Gold (USA) (Spinning World (USA)) ANALYSIS: The remarkable start made by the first crop of runners sired by Candy Ride continued with Misremembered’s win in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1). With his first crop – now four – Candy Ride has sired nine stakes winners, six graded, including other Grade 1 winners Evita Argentina and Capt. Candyman Can. His second crop includes Sidney’s Candy, who has established himself as a serious Kentucky Derby prospect with wins in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) and San Felipe Stakes (G2). This is quite some beginning for a horse with a decidedly unfashionable pedigree – he’s an Argentine-bred by Ride The Rails, an otherwise rather undistinguished son of the Fappiano stallion Cryptoclearance, and out of a mare by Candy Stripes, a successful sire in Argentina, but a tremendous disappointment when tried in the US. What Candy Ride did have going for him was truly exceptional ability. He went three-for-three in Argentina and became the champion miler after taking the Joaquin S. de Anchorena
