For more than 100 year s, Russell Athletic has supplied Amer ica’s athletes and teams with the latest innovations in spor ts apparel. The company was founded in 1902 by Benjamin Russell i n A l e x a n d e r C i t y, A l a b a m a , m a k i n g t h e Wo r l d s o l d est br and still in business. In 1920, Benjamin Russell’s son, Benjamin Russell Junior was attending the University of Alabama and during a football game had an idea for an all cotton version of the standard woolen jer sey that would stop the discomfor t and chaffing experienced when playing in wool garments. This radical concept for a cotton sweater was the inspiration that created the contemporar y sweatshir t as we know i t t o d a y. S o o n t h e c o m p a n y w a s m a n u f a c t u r i n g a l l c o t ton spor ts apparel and athletes ever ywhere loved the comfor table new fabric. Many year s later another innovation called Pro Cotton was introduced. Intended for the spor tsfield, these heavyweight and soft but r ugged garments soon became staples of Amer ica’s ear ly 1980’s bur geoning sneaker driven Streetwear scene. Russell Athletic Premium combines the original Pro Cotton fabric specifications with authentic details and labeling to create a contemporar y hybrid take on the br ands golden age . Russell’s long histor y as a blank supplier to American schools, colleges, teams and clubs is at the centre of the Fall14 Premium concept with refe r e n c e s t o I v y L e a g u e U n i v e r s i t i e s , We s t C o a s t t e a m s and obscure spor ts clubs with graphics drawn from Russell’s own archive in Bowling Green, Alabama.
