The Netherlands has an impressive tradition in animated film. Since the early seventies, numerous Dutch animation films have garnered international praise and notable accolades (including two Oscars). Dutch Touch gives us an update and presents the newest films from 2011 and 2012. This programme shows the works of both ‘old masters’ like Paul Driessen and Maarten Koopman as well as promising newcomers like Frodo Kuipers and Hisko Hulsing. Junkyard from Hisko Hulsing is this year’s Dutch entry for the Oscars.

Dol ly w ood – so hieß das Programm der niederlän-

dischen Puppenanimationsfilme, die von den 1940ern bis in die 1970er Jahre hinein im Geesink Studio produziert wurden. Joop Geesink sowie Marten Toonder und George Pál zählen zu den großen Pionieren der Animationskunst in den Niederlanden. Das GeesinkStudio produzierte vor allem Werbefilme und konnte namhafte dänische und internationale Unternehmen wie Philips, Mackeson, Ballantine, Campari, Coca-Cola, Knorr, Heineken und Heinz zu seinen Kunden zählen. Die lustigen Geschichten mit den niedlichen Puppen fielen durch hochprofessionelle Animationstechniken auf und wurden für Märkte in Europa, Asien, Süd- und Nordamerika produziert.

Dollywood – that was the name given to the Dutch puppet-animation films that were produced at Geesink Studio from the 1940s to the 1970s. Joop Geesink as well as Marten Toonder and Georg Pál are considered to be the greatest animation pioneers in the Netherlands. Geesink Studio predominantly produced commercials and counted renowned international companies as their clients such as Philips, Mackeson, Ballantine, Campari, Coca-Cola, Knorr, Heiniken and Heinz. Their amusing little stories with cute puppets were particularly eye-catching due to their highly professional animation techniques and were produced for European, Asian, South and North American markets.

Pavel Koutský (A Well Meant Advice) geben ihre Erfahrungen dort weiter und Studenten haben die seltene Chance, Autorenfilme zu schaffen. Ihre außergewöhnlichen Leistungen – etwa Filme wie Swimming Pool, The Clod oder Graffitiger – finden auch im Ausland immer mehr Beachtung. Dies könnte ein wichtiger Impuls für mehr staatliche Unterstützung und alternative Vertriebswege sein. Wir zeigen in unserem Programm Werke von Pavel Koutský, Michaela Pavlatova und vielen anderen ausgezeichneten Filmemachern.

Czech universities are a creative breeding ground for the art of contemporary animation. Filmmakers including Pavel Koutský (A Well Meant Advice) pass on their expertise and students are given the rare chance to create auteur films. Their extraordinary efforts – such as in films like Swimming Pool, The Clod and Graffitiger – are increasingly attracting international attention. This could be an important impulse for receiving more state support and alternative distribution channels. This programme will present works from Pavel Koutský, Michaela Pavlatova and many other award-winning filmmakers.

Für die Hochschulfilmreihe „rbb movies” entstehen seit 2004 in Zusammenarbeit mit der Babelsberger Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen „Konrad Wolf” (HFF) und der Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb) jedes Jahr sechs 30-minütige Spielfilme, deren Schwerpunkt auf der filmischen Interpretation des Lebens in Berlin/ Brandenburg liegt. Im rbb-Fernsehen haben diese ihre TV-Premiere. Drei davon werden in diesem Programm in Anwesenheit der Filmemacher gezeigt. Eintönigkeit, Festgefahrenheit, Vorurteile – all diese negativen Attribute des dörflichen Lebens finden sich hier wieder. Über all dem steht jedoch in jedem der Werke die Frage nach Veränderung: Wer wacht auf?

Initiated in 2004, this film academy short film series is created in cooperation with Babelsberg Film and Television School “Konrad Wolf” (HFF) and the German Film and Television academy (dffb). Every year it produces six 30-minute films that interpret life in the Berlin/Brandenburg region. All films are premiered on the rbb TV channel. A one shot or “long take” is an uninterrupted sequence in a film, often as a moving or “tracking shot”. But a long take is not just a long take – there are point-of-view shots, 360° shots, slow dolly shots and Steadicam takes all in a single uncut shot – everything that’s possible is attempted!

Umso fruchtbarer erscheint sie dabei heute als Nährboden für ein konzeptuelles Experiment: S o u nd & V i s i o n führt nun schon zum dritten Mal visuell auffällige Kurzfilme mit zeitgenössischen Musikern zwischen Neuer Musik und experimentierfreudigem Pop zusammen und präsentiert das Ergebnis als Live-Performance in der Volksbühne.

Providing live scores for silent films is practically as old as the film medium itself. While it used to be the only way to provide a film with sound, the development of talking films drove the art form into virtual obscurity. And that is an ideal realm for conceptual experiments: for the third year, Sound & Vision will once again take a collection of visually striking films and pair them with contemporary musicians, whose styles range from art music to innovative pop. / SPEZIALPREIS „ZEBU D’OR“ E H R ENGAST AUS MADAGASKA R / SPECIAL AWARD “ZEBU D ’OR” HONOURED GUEST FROM MADAGASCAR This year at the “Rencontres du Film Court” Film Festival in Antananarivo, Madagascar, a special prize was conferred by interfilm Festival Director Heinz Hermanns for the second time.

Beim Filmfestival „Rencontres du Film Court“ in Antananarivo, Madagaskar wurde dieses Jahr, von interfilm-Festivalleiter Heinz Hermanns zum zweiten Mal ein besonderer Preis verliehen. Die Gewinnerin des Hauptpreises „Zebu d’Or“ der Kategorie Dokumentarfilm wird zu unserem Festival eingeladen und studiert einen Monat an einer Filmhochschule. Den Preis im Bereich Dokumentarfilm richtet interfilm Berlin in Kooperation mit Laza Razanajatovo des „Rencontres du Film Court“ Antananarivo, dem Goethe-Institut, dem Institut Français und der Deutschen Botschaft in Madagaskar sowie der DFFB – Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin aus. Die diesjährige Gewinnerin Harimala Rason nimmt als Ehrengast an unserem Festival teil und wird in der „Konfrontationen“ Jury sitzen; Harimala Rason wird anschließend einen Monat Gaststudentin an der DFFB sein. Wir hoffen, diese Art von Preis zukünftig auf mehr Länder, in denen das Filmschaffen besonders schwierig ist, ausbauen zu können.

The winner of the main “Zebu d’Or” Award in the documentary category will be invited to our festival and receive a month’s tuition at a film academy. The Documentary Award is organised by interfilm Berlin in cooperation with Laza Razanajatovo of the “Rencontres du Film Court” Antananarivo, the Goethe Institute, the Institute Français the German Embassy in Madagascar as well as the DFFB - German Film and Television Academy Berlin. This year’s winner, Harimala Rason will attend our festival as an honoured guest and participate as a member of the “Confrontations” jury. After the festival she will be a guest student at the DFFB for one month. We hope to offer awards of this kind to other countries in which filmmaking is particularly difficult in future years.
