FROM THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

InterAct Theatre Company is a theatre for today’s world, producing new and contemporary plays that explore the social, political, and cultural issues of our time.

I am always looking for plays that reveal a fascinating character, explore a little-known idea, dig a little deeper into a misunderstood issue, or offer a surprising and theatrical take on a familiar story. In this age of ever-revolving news headlines and 24-hour constant coverage, the personal narratives of the people whose lives are affected by “the big events” often get lost or obscured. So my goal is to bring these narratives to life through the intimate, communal, commercial-free experience of live theatre. Our 2011/2012 season will expose you to a mosaic of extraordinary people, stories, issues and ideas that go beyond the headlines, fly under the radar and exist off the grid.

The Philadelphia premiere of THE HOW AND THE WHY, by Sarah Treem, puts the female body front and center as it pits two generations of brilliant and daring evolutionary biologists against each other in a battle for academic survival. The Philadelphia premiere of MICROCRISIS, by Mike Lew, imagines a global lending scheme run amok when a hard-partying financial entrepreneur bites off more than he can chew. The world premiere of ETCHED IN SKIN ON A SUNLIT NIGHT, by Kara Lee Corthron, follows an African American painter who grapples with racial and other demons after exiling herself to the whitest place on earth. And our inaugural OUTSIDE THE FRAME festival of presented works will feature a multiplicity of dynamic and compelling voices exploring the ever-widening boundaries of our cultural landscape.

“Supersmart, super-engrossing… a glimpse into the thrill of working on groundbreaking OCT. science” - Philadelphia Inquirer

21 – NOV. 13, 2011

WRITTEN BY: SARAH TREEM DIRECTED BY: SETH ROZIN FEATURING: JANIS DARDARIS and VICTORIA FRINGS On the eve of a prestigious conference, an up-and-coming evolutionary biologist wrestles for the truth with an established leader in the field. Their real challenge has been negotiating the fiercely male-dominated enterprise of academic science, where a female perspective has rarely been considered… until now. But the two trail blazing women share more than a passion for science, as the revelation of long-held secrets threatens to change their personal trajectories. Evolution and emotion collide in this thought-provoking new play about science, family and the survival of the fittest. Inspired by the acclaimed best-seller Woman: An Intimate Geography by Natalie Angier of The New York Times THE HOW AND THE WHY sponsored by www.ballardspahr.com

Additional design by Jamie Blank - www.jamieblank.com

“A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for the financially dispossessed...” – Time Out New York

JAN. 20 – FEB. 12, 2012 WRITTEN BY: MIKE LEW DIRECTED BY: SETH ROZIN FEATURING: FRANK X, KEVIN BERGEN, BI JEAN NGO, HANNAH GOLD, DAVE JOHNSON and MAIA DESANTI What happens when wheeler-dealers on Wall Street use the Nobel Prize-winning concept of microcredit to ravage the world economy? Fast on the heels of the current recession, MICROCRISIS is a scathing satire that follows a smart, slick, big-vision banker as he draws a gaggle of innocent do-gooders into an outrageous global lending scheme, bouncing seamlessly between the U.S., Ghana, and Monaco. Never stopping to consider the destruction in their wake, the banker and his unwitting accomplices try desperately to stay one step ahead of the game.

“The savagery of MICROCRISIS is impressive indeed.” – The New York Times
