I am a small town girl. Growing up in Greyton, I developed three distinct passions; make-up, styling and singing. It sounds cliche, but I was a huge participator in musical theatre in my childhood, and always ď€ rst to audition for any and every talent show or musical around. However, moving to Cape Town in my later years, I soon realised my true talents lay behind the scenes in making the magic happen. I take it upon myself to stay on track with various trends, not only for inspiration purposes but it also helps me in my specialization; styling for high-fashion photography as well as the fashion and media industry. In my spare time, I enjoy the thrill of exercise, not only to feel good about myself and to maintain a motivated attitude but also to build on a healthier tomorrow. I have always been a huge fan of a great booty and, as such, I am honored to be sponsored by SlimLab and BrasilFit, who help keep me stay ď€ t and healthy by supporting a wholesome lifestyle of eating clean and training dirty.

ed’s letter star guest house in Sandton whilst we attended the Sustainable Tourism Partnership Programme (STPP) launch and last but not least a very big thank you to Fly Mango SA for sponsoring our flights to and from JHB in order to attend this very valuable event.

Greetings :) The last two months has been filled with so much growth and excitement for Inspire I am not sure I can fit it all into an intro letter! Firstly, I would like to say another VERY BIG thank you to all those who have contributed to our incredibly rapid growth rate, your support is so greatly appreciated that words actually fail me. Our March / April issue was received with such fantastic fireworks and it has simply gotten better from there. As the ultimate objective behind Inspire is to become a global publication, I am so thrilled to tell you that we are now being read in over 30 countries and have some fantastic new additions to our content contributors who come from various places around the globe. It is always so rewarding to see how many people are truly inspired by our publication and are “ready and willing” to get involved in a collaborative effort to stir passion, invigorate spirit, to connect and be connected, to close the gap and to create opportunity. We have been very fortunate to represent Inspire Virtual Mag at several events over the last few months, meeting some amazing people who are doing great things! As a special mention, I would like to thank Pieter Smuts of Delsma Farm for our fantastic accommodation whilst attending the launch of the www.winevalley.co.za, Caroline Ungersbock - President – NAA-SA for her generosity and hospitality at her gorgeous five

Through meeting so many people from all walks of life at these various events, one message has rung clear in my mind – and it definitely seems to be a common denominator amongst all of them. Learn from past experience, don't let it cloud your future – be true to yourself, be honest, express yourself and each and every day put 110% passion into your dreams. With keeping that message in the forefront of my mind, we have made “expression” the focus in this issue. We have decided to implement that in several facets of the mag itself, from structure through to design as well as content matter. We have also focused on several profile features this time around, as it is often through other peoples inspiration that we find our own. We all have within us, the ability to do, be and achieve whatever it is that we dream of. All we need to do is let go of all the things that inhibit us, express the true version of ourselves – shamelessly – and begin to walk confidently in the direction of our dreams. There is a lot to be grateful for RIGHT NOW in this very moment. What are you grateful for? Write it down, now! And remind yourself of it every single day. It is the very first step to changing the rest of your life – for the better! I hope you walk away from the pages ahead, filled with vooma! Enjoy it, share it and most importantly, grow from it. - Much love.

passion for people

Kirsty Chadwick, is passionate about education and technology. She started The Training Room Online in 2008, when she saw the need for alternative training solutions in South Africa. She spoke to Inspire about the massive potential for growing e-learning in South Africa as well as the importance of patience and fortitude. What does The Training Room Online do? We provide customized e-learning solutions to both the corporate and private sectors. Our team of creative experts works closely with each client to provide a customised product, using the cutting-edge technology. At The Training Room Online, we recognize that our clients require the most efficient and effective training methods, to save time and money. I have always been extremely passionate about education, and technology is an incredible enabler. The use of e-learning, rather than text-based or instructor-led training, has proven to increase information retention of by up to 60%. What is The Training Room Online best known for and why? We are best known for our passion for developing people. I have spent more than 20 years in education, and this has filled me with a keen sense for overcoming learning challenges. Incorporating technology makes learning interactive, improving the retention of information. There is a common misconception that elearning has to be internet-based, which is incorrect. We have provided e-learning solutions across many different platforms, ranging from the web to DVDs and cell phones. What sets The Training Room Online apart from its competitors? We are a full-service company in that we are able to develop our e-learning products from inception to implementation. The Training Room Online provides clients with tailormade products, specifically designed to meet their individual needs. Our production department that uses animation, audio and video technology to realise ideas based on clients needs and what comes from our team of highly skilled writers, designers and web developers, dedicated to creating e-learning products of an international standard.

inspired What keeps your customers coming back? Our individual service and effective e-learning solutions keep our clients eager for further project developments. E-learning is fast becoming recognized as a more efficient solution than previous education models, such as textbased or instructor-led training. Over the last five years we have become adept at providing our clients with unique products that are best suited to their needs. What are your key challenges? On a daily basis we are faced with the challenge of creating fresh and exciting ways to incorporate technology into education. As the business of education changes, so should our approach. By giving each client excellent service, and also giving back to local communities, we strive to become the leading e-learning service provider in South Africa, while positively affecting the future labour force. How do you see the future for The Online Training Room? In 1995, only 4% of American corporations were using elearning and this percentage has soared to 77%. The elearning industry, currently valued at $56 billion, is a rapidly expanding sector, and is likely to double by 2015. While e-learning is still a relatively new concept in South Africa, we recognize that there is a need for this type of education. Also, South Africa has a rapidly expanding business market, and with that, comes the need for the rapid and effective staff training. We currently have offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, London and the Seychelles, and are aiming to become leaders in the elearning market, expanding even further. What makes Kirsty Chadwick unique, and what do you need to be successful in business? I never give up. This business has presented numerous challenges, and I have always committed myself to finding the best solutions to challenges. I have learned that patience and fortitude are essential. Each day will offer new challenges and difficulties. The key is to be proactive and always strive to give your best. I am not my hair continued... “Aw. Sank yu. Ze grrobe is comfy, yes? Come, fallow me to ze next cubeecal! Yu ken lie down on ze bed, yes?” I did, and lay down on a gurney in a comfy robe. That should have signalled that a quick exit to an ambulance was a possibility. Enter Helga, half my size and age. “How are you, Ms Burbette? Is this your first time? Well, let's have a look, shall we?” My comfy robe was ungraciously parted and a gloved hand fumbled through my untidy region. “So what is it that we are wanting today?” I was not prepared for a partisan effort, so I was not sure what we wanted. “What do we think?” “It's quite bizzy down there. Did we have anything in mind?” “Like what?” “Oh, we're new, hey bokkie! Don't worry, you're in safe hands! How does your man like it?” WTF? If I had one, what was I supposed to have asked him? Short back and sides? Whiskers? Braids? GHD? I had no idea I had to consult him first! “Well, luvvy, the trend is the clean look. They like to see.” “See what??” “You know, what they are doing! What they are up to!” O-M-G! I seriously doubted whether being clean shaven would lead to the Holy Grail. Generally, we women know that it's mostly rub-a-dub-dub... “Oops you've just so lost the plot and the map. 'X' marks the spot – but we'll be patient – asking for directions is always good!” Then, enter the studious Matilda. Her “honey” was well heated in a white bowl. It was scented, too. The music was turned up. I realised why, after the fact. “Just relax. We are going to give you a Hollywood! Don't worry, you are in safe hands.” That's what they always say, just before they are going to remove an organ without an anaesthetic. Matilda hummed and stroked with her plastic baking spoon, and thwacked heated honey on to my virgin regions. Thwack, gulumph, smooth, smooth. The ritual went on for ten minutes. Olga returned with warm strips of gauze over her arm and placed them on the strategic places. Not bad, I thought. Then Helga the Horrible returned. “Vee arrrggh now goink to ggremove ze bandaitches.” “Oh, this is a breeze,” I thought, until she said, “Here, put

ze towwell between your tiese. It von't be painful – just very sore.” That was possibly the understatement of the new millennium. The first strip of gauzy wax was dexterously whipped from my inner thigh. The pain didn't register with the first swipe. I was simply incredulous. By the second and third strip I was begging for mercy and baying like a wolf at the moon. There was still some hair left, but I had already curled into a foetal position begging for water-boarding instead. As women, we use our hair as a sign of protest, a symbol of struggle: • I cut my hair to show I am equal • I grow my hair to show I am Woman • I cut my hair to show I am married • I grow my hair to show that I am a youthful girl-virgin • I cut my hair to show that I am lesbian • I grow my hair to show that I can be lesbian without being butch • I shave the hair on my legs to be less male • I shave the hair from my armpits – also to be less male • I grow the hair in my armpits to show that I can be a woman with hairy armpits but not a man – more like Julia Roberts • I remove my eyebrows to show… I am not sure what... • I tweeze my eyebrows to redefine the face of feminine • I shave my crotch to suit his fantasy • I don't shave my crotch to show him that I can have hair down there just like him • I pluck the hairs from my menopausal chin to be less of a hag • I can grow a goatee if I wanted to, it just won't look cool as yours Yes, we have hair issues. We say, “If my hair is not right, then I don't feel right!” Perhaps we spend too much time living up to the expectations of others who dictate what our hair should be like. Perhaps we should be reminded that hair is keratin, the same stuff that grows at the end of a rhino's head. They are killed for it. Why are we killing ourselves with all this attention to our hair? In the words of India Arie, “I am not my hair. I am not this skin. I am not your expectations! No!!! I am the soul that lives within.” Article: Burbette Scott Smith http://burbettestories.blogspot.com/

mango hosts largest aviation career day

inspired

Low cost airline Mango hosted its second aviation Career Day at the Swartkops Air Force Base on 10 and 11 May 2013. The Career Day comprised of over 30 exhibitors within the aviation sector and provided learners and other interested parties with information and assistance on careers in the aviation industry. Mango also launched its career and job shadow programme in Athlone, Western Cape earlier this year. “This was our largest Career Day expo ever,” said Mango spokesperson Hein Kaiser. “Learners and all interested parties had the opportunity to engage with representatives from across almost the entire sector to learn about the industry.” Kaiser said that the range of exhibitors included South African Airways, SAA Technical, SA Express Airways as well as cabin crew, pilot and other engineering schools among others. “The Mango Career Day expo at the Swartkops Air Show was a one-stop career and aviation enthusiast destination for information and advice.” Mango launched its Career Day and Job Shadow Programme late last year. It is aimed at educating learners and interested parties about potential career opportunities in the aviation sector. “We have thus far reached just over 14 000 learners over the first two events,” says Kaiser. Along with our partners, Mango expects to engage with thousands more this year. “We are an airline for all South Africans and for us meaningful interaction with tomorrow's leaders provides the opportunity to positively contribute to the future of both

the aviation industry and our country.” Mango and the Joburg based SA Mzansi Ballet (SAMB) company collaborated to perform a world-first at the Swartkops Air Show. A Mango new generation Boeing 737-800, skippered by Presidential Baobab award recipient and Mango Training Captain Scully Levin and Chief Pilot Quentin Mouton delivered a collaborative performance with the SAMB dancers turning the airfield into the largest audience for a ballet performance on the African continent, superseded globally only by the current Lady Gaga concert tour. “While the aircraft performed its procedure in the air,” said Mango spokesperson Hein Kaiser, “the Ballet Company executed movement on stage.” The ballet piece was choreographed to match and answer to the aerial movement of the Boeing 737-800. “Mango's participation at the Swartkops Air Show was more than just a fly-past. It marked our debut in the arena and participation had to match our mantra of innovation.” This, he said, laid the foundation for the aerial ballet idea. SA Mzansi Ballet chief executive Dirk Badenhorst added that while, at 7 minutes, it was likely the shortest performance in the company's history, it was also one of the most important. “We endeavour to take ballet to the public at every possible opportunity and to share its beauty and grace. What better platform than sharing airspace with a giant and graceful aircraft. What a juxtaposition,” said Badenhorst. Air show details are available at www.saafmuseum.org. Write your name and the burger of your choice on the chalkboard, grab a bottle of wine from the counter and sit yourself down at one of the wire garden table and chair sets – straight out of the 80s. When your order is ready, Nigel bellows your name and after you grab your burger, the fun really begins. These babies are huge, and there is no way you can eat one elegantly. Be prepared to leave with sauce smeared across your face, down your front and probably in your hair. You need to get there early though: Nigel only makes 50 of his homemade burgers a night, and when they're done, they're done. The same venue is open for breakfast and lunch too, so if giant burgers are too meaty for you (or you miss out), try the Mucky Mary's Hubcap Breakfast or a world-famous sandwich from The Bitches Tits. The Dogs Bollocks is open from 7.00 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday and from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm on Saturdays. Burgers are served on Mondays to Fridays from 5.00pm until they've all been scoffed. Phone 083440-7843 or visit

Haas Coffee Collective, Bo-Kaap If something slightly macabre is your cup of tea (or coffee), you'll love the quirky Haas Coffee Collective in colourful Rose Street: on your way to a table, a waiter in a top hat will take your order before you browse through some of the interesting items for sale. The shelves are filled with sculptures, ceramics, cushions, jewellery and other art pieces including bunnies and skulls in different shapes and sizes. Even the coffee mugs have skulls on them, and from the corners, bunnies watch your every sip. Apart from hot and cold beverages (including the famous cat-pooh coffee) Haas Coffee Collective serves delicious treats, as well as breakfast and lunch – yes, bunny chow is on the menu! They say that every day should start with a good coffee, but with comfy chairs strategically placed in sunny spots, the chances are that you could stay there all day!

Organic at Heart, Wynberg A picture-perfect thatched cottage in Bardia Street is home to restaurant with a lot of heart. It's also a wonderful spot for vegetarians and vegans although meat-eaters are very welcome, too! Organic at Heart offers a wide selection of meals and treats suitable for those with food intolerances, and if the décor isn't whimsical enough, they also garnish their dishes with edible flowers. Most of ingredients for their dishes come from their own organic vegetable garden and those that don't are organic and free range. Try their delectable cakes, including gluten-free chocolate and ginger cake or vegan carrot cake. Pop into Spades and Spoons Deli on the way out to stock up on biscuits, muffins and cheeses. Organic at Heart is open for breakfast and lunch, and on Sundays you can tuck into a three-course buffet lunch, with all the trimmings, for R 180. Also on the premises, are various massage options and meditation classes, so why not treat yourself to a delicious day of pampering and eating? Organic at Heart is open Mondays to Fridays from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm, on Saturdays from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm and on Sundays from 9.00 am for breakfast and their Sunday lunch buffet is available from noon. Phone 021 797 0180 or visit www.organicatheart.co.za.

Saints Burger Joint, Gardens It's all about rock at this burger joint in Kloof Street where dinner is served to the sounds of bands like AC/DC and Metallica. In fact, Saints even go as far as to say that Lady Gaga is not a jukebox option! There are dragons and “tattoo-esque” designs on the ceilings, and the stairs are emblazoned with the lyrics from Eric Clapton's “Stairway to Heaven”. The burgers, themselves, are pretty good and have cool rock n' roll names like 'Sweet Pretender' and 'Smoke on the Water'. You can also design your own burger (from the bun to the filling) and other dishes on the menu include vegetarian options, snacks, flatbreads and desserts.

Breakfast is served all day and there are specials on different nights of the week, like 2-for-1 burgers on Thursday nights with a daily hour every day between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm with craft beer on tap at R 20, cocktails are R 25 and your third tequila is free. Prepare for a rocking night! Saints Burger Joint is open every day of the week from noon, for lunch, and they close at 11.00 pm. Phone 021 424 0030 or visit www.saintsburgerjoint.co.za. I am constantly on the look-out for different and quirky places to have a meal, so if you know of any worth a mention, please let me know! MasterChef South Africa judge Pete GoffeWood will be appearing alongside Nederburg winemaker Wilhelm Pienaar at this year's Gugulethu Wine Festival in May. They will present the winery's now famous Taste Theatre, a fascinating journey of flavours. The dextrous duo who created such a spark last year in explaining to festival goers why some wine and food pairings seem heaven-matched, will bring their fun, entertaining and common- sense reasoning to this year's festival with a line-up of wines and elemental food flavours to demonstrate exactly what they mean. Their joint appearance comes just a few weeks before the June 11 start to the second season of MasterChef South Africa that once again stars Goffe-Wood in a judging role, together with his colleagues Benny Masekwameng and Andrew Atkinson. For the second year, Nederburg will be the sole official wine sponsor of the popular series. Guests, accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis in the Taste Theatre within the festival venue, will be encouraged to interact with the presenters, ask questions, express their opinions and share their own experiences of wine and food pairing favourites and fiascos. The presentations will be staged at 17:30, 18:30 and 19:30 on the Friday, and at 16:30, 18:00 and 19:30 on the Saturday. An exciting collection of Nederburg wines will also be available for tasting at an exhibition stand on the show, including the acclaimed Ingenuity blends, as well as the new generation, super-smooth drinking 56HUNDRED wines. Loyalists will have a chance to savour some nostalgia with Baronne, one of South Africa's topselling reds that celebrates its 40th birthday this year. Last year, the coveted Diners Club of the Year Award went to Nederburg. The winery was also judged the most successful South African winery at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London. The third annual TOPS Gugulethu Wine Festival will take place on Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25 on the rooftop of the Gugulethu Square Mall. Tickets, at R90 a head, can be booked by going to www.gugulethuwinefestival.co.za.

Special messages come with “hogs and kisses” from Hermon During October 2001, I drove to a festival in Tulbagh, admiring the valley with its vineyards, wheat fields and beautiful mountains and realized with a shock that I had run out of cigarettes. I looked for a place to stop, not knowing that there weren't any shops area, and was forced to turn of the major route, into Hermon. In this small village I found Die Rooi Spens (red pantry) cafe, and there, I met my husband. And that was my one and final stop. My husband owned a number of properties in Hermon so we decided to develop them to offer self-catering accommodation. Hermon Guesthouse originally belonged to my parents-in-law, who lived in it and ran a general dealer from the premises. Now it is a guesthouse with a fully equipped kitchen and an indoor braai (barbecue) facility. We have tried to keep the vintage style and charm. Our vision was to give each room its own personality and identity, so the three en suite bedrooms are named after flowers. The original shop has become “the Varkpaleis” (Pig Palace) – the entertainment and function room where guests enjoy breakfast and other social functions. Once that the guesthouse was complete we converted the original, local post office into a five-bedroom, African-inspired establishment. Again wanted to be true to the heritage of area, and because the San people used to take messages from one farm to another, the post office is now the /Hom Guesthouse (/hom means “the messenger” in the San language). This guesthouse is very popular for hosting large groups of friends and/or family: in winter they can spend fun time next to a fire, and around the tenseat dining table, while in summer, the circular braai under the trees is a real camp fire experience. The Shack is furnished with our personal sentimental items – we bought very little furniture preferring to revamp and recycle. The bedside tables are old wheel drums, and the hand basin is an old aluminium bowl in which my mother-in-law used to knead the bread. This room opens on to the swimming pool area outdoor braai. Olyfie (little olive) is a play on “ou lyfie” which, in Afrikaans, is also an endearing reference to a large woman and the décor reflects the colour of calamata olives. Lampies caters for guests who might be disabled, and Something Special is our most recent creation. It is a self-catering and open plan cottage with a large kitchen area. Equipped with a king-sized bed, it sleeps two and has a two-meter indoor fire place and a Dover stove for warmth in the cold winter months. It also has a unique bathroom: in the private garden couples can enjoy share a starlit bath next to an outdoor fire. The warthog in our logo is my husband's favourite animal and is the reason for our slogan, “Boetie & Marika welcome you with Hoggs and Kisses”.

from skinny, bullied, shy girl to rst afrikaans

yolandi malherbe’s determined road to success I was born to be a model. My very first homework assignment was “What do I want to be when I grow up?” and, even then, I knew. I made a booklet about modelling and fashion. My only challenge, then, was that I was too shy. Here and there, my mom entered me into modelling competitions for children, but the photo shoots were always a problem because I didn't want to smile or pose by myself. Then, when I was 12, I joined a modelling school, but they were more focused on the children who had confidence than the basics of modelling. I did make friends who shared my interests and gained confidence. However, ramp modelling was beyond me, so what had started out as a weekly highlight, and a possible future career, turned sour, not helped by the school bullies. Primary school wasn't a fun time: I was teased for doing modelling, teased for being the smallest girl in the class, teased for being skinny and teased for not having had developed breasts. Looking back at it now, it's actually quite funny, but for a child in her formative years, it was the hardest thing to deal with. In the end, I gave up modelling and tried to blend in: I had, at that young age, already learned that standing out means standing in someone's way.

my very first job in the Cape Town city centre, where all the casting houses and agencies are. Sadly many agencies rejected me for not “having the look”, not being tall enough or being too young. I gave up completely. The experts couldn't be wrong, could they? I kept the file with my pretty photos and made peace with the possibility of my dream never becoming a reality. Instead, I climbed the corporate ladder, and two years later, and in my first serious relationship, the possibility of a modelling career became even more remote. Although I was happy and content, I always longed for the dream I was too scared to follow and took a three-year qualification in media and journalism, instead. And when that was done, I started blogging. The purpose of the blog was to serve as an online writing portfolio. I wrote about random things – fashion tips one day, something newsworthy the next, and then something about celebs, the day after. I could never master a topic that would be unique, until I started blogging about my own life. When I included photos, the hits on my website climbed. I joined Twitter, too, which I mostly used to promote blog posts. I really enjoyed writing and still do. Then, mid-2010, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life and ended a 4 year relationship to follow a dream that still might not even work out. I was willing to take the risk.

When I got to high school, I didn't bother with modelling. I didn't want a repeat of my primary school experience, especially not in a bigger school. But this time, I had also grown in confidence and started to blossom, physically: modelling scouts approached me in the street, but my parents were adamant that I finish my school education first. So, I entered the local pageants and when presenters were needed at school shows, I jumped at the opportunity. This was also my chance to show peers where my passion was - my confidence was coming back and, in Matric, I was one of the tallest girls in the school so the bullies left me alone.

Shortly after that, I was approached by a photographer, who had come across my blog on Twitter, and who wanted me to do a lingerie shoot. Even though it had been years since I had last tried to pose, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. I even wrote a behind-thescenes blog and included the final images. I quickly learned how powerful the social media are. With those lingerie shots on my blog and on Facebook, people sat up and noticed and a mutual friend showed them to a designer. She immediately asked me to model for Young Designers Emporium (YDE), and for her new label, Siren Design. I then used those shots to audition as the lead dancer in JaxPanik's music video for “Dinosaur”. Again, I was chosen. I was back in the game and here to stay.

When I matriculated at the end of 2004, I finally had the opportunity to chase my dream. I compiled a portfolio and started approaching agencies, and was lucky to get

At the beginning of 2011, with the help of my two best friends, we put together a 13-hour photo shoot: two

photographers, a hair and make-up artist, two male models, several wardrobe changes and four different locations, all for a professional portfolio. I used this to market myself using the social media and entered the 2011 Sports Illustrated New Model Search, I cast for Playboy South Africa, and entered just about any competition or model search I could. Then, I was chosen as a Playmate, and I catapulted into the big time. Since being announced as the first Capetonian Playmate, and the first Afrikaans Playmate in the world, I have been a regular on radio stations, website interviews, in television interviews and in the print media. After this, my first challenge was to find an open door in this industry, and then to stay in it. To do this, I ensured I was a great Playmate and exceptional ambassador for Playboy. I went to each and every event and activity which would provide exposure. My fan base kept growing, and even more when I became a guest presenter on Good Hope FM's Breakfast Show. More eyebrows were raised when I was seen with big celebs and rumoured to be dating them. Today, my portfolio is extensive: I have hundreds of photos, and have worked with countless photographers, posed for ad campaigns and for major publications, been on magazine covers, done various music videos, an international TV ad and even a movie. I travel all over South Africa for shoots; I work with talented people and I meet models I have always admired. I've learned to follow my intuition and not the money. I've learned that one person's opinion should never shape my dream. It is in my hands. All the hard work, long hours, rejection, being bullied and the many sacrifices, have proven worth it! Have I made mistakes? Yes, many, but they are not failures, they are always lessons. I'm so fortunate to be presented with wonderful opportunities, daily, and I'm lucky to have been born with so much passion that allows me to follow my dream, no matter the obstacle. Next year is my ten-year high school reunion and I can't wait to thank the bullies who made me strong. model: yolandi malherbe dressed by: www.desray.co.za photo: jason paul hermann photography studio location: www.theimagineers.co.za

bridal couture w w w. v o n v e b r i d a l . c o . z a

Rochelle von Veh is 28, and by her own admision, driven. She loves fashion and all things pretty. She opened her own bridal boutique Vonvé Bridal Couture in December 2012. She shares her experience and what she offers with Inspire. What motivated or inspired you to open a bridal boutique? How did it all start? My career started as a multi media designer, designing fragrance and ad campaigns for a well know international brand. This was a very rewarding time in my life and I learned a lot about interacting with clients. I started a small clothing business on the side and took an interest in the fashion industry, and came up with the idea of opening a bridal boutique. To be honest, I first thought I was crazy, but after thinking about it carefully, I decided to invest some money and began to do market research. Our doors opened November 2012; it was a big step and I'm very proud of how it all came together. I love what I do. It is exactly as I imagined: stressful, busy, demanding, tiring, but amazing fun! What are some of the things that have helped become who you are? My ambitions, hard work and a strong desire to succeed have helped me become who I am. Also, I can't underestimate the support and faith of my loving relatives and friends. What's your favourite gown and why? It is impossible to choose one as a favourite – I love them all! It depends on the bride but I absolutely love the glamour and sophistication of our Felda gown. Teamed with a belt or a jacket, one is transported to glamorous Hollywood. I also love Floro which is whimsical, while the mermaid silhouette of the Fabiola gown fits the body to perfection. These are just three of many. What are the 2013 wedding trends? Lace wedding gowns are definitely all the rage this season. Lace is ideal for a timeless style: it gives a soft, elegant look and adds detail and class to a dress. Whether you choose a gown entirely made from a lace fabric, or even just some well-placed accents, lace adds heaps of texture and romance. What services does you offer that separates Vonvé Bridal Couture from the competition? We are very different. For example, we work exclusively by appointment, with one bride at a time. Each bride gets my undivided attention when she chooses the most important dress she will ever wear. Our main advantage is our individual approach, availability of wedding gowns, our delivery service and, best of all, we dress the bride on her wedding day.

What can we expect in the future? I cater for the modern, contemporary bride and I'm currently working on my own couture bridal collection label, which will be launched in a few months. The selection of gowns that I have to offer brides has played a huge part in what I have achieved today: high quality products with a very positive purpose! More about Vonvé Bridal Couture Vonvé Bridal Couture is an exclusive stockist of the awardwinning “Blue” collection by Enzoani. The collection is redefines couture fashion, providing exceptional quality, sophisticated beauty and a fit like no other. From its launch, with its innovative style and beauty, the Enzoani bridal collection has become one best-know brands in many countries. The range is romantic and feminine, graceful, timeless and elegant, incorporating vintage glamour. Inspired to be dazzling and unique, our classical wedding gown designs are given a modern twist and surprising details. All gowns are impeccably made, in sumptuous fabrics, that accentuate the bride's body, allowing her to walk away in sensual and timeless beauty. The Vonvé Bridal Couture team ensures that every bride's experience is truly inspirational, personal and one she will remember forever. We look after our brides, every step of the way: personally selecting from the latest styles, welcoming her and helping her to choose that perfect dress. If you're a bride looking for the best service and a relaxed, honest approach then make sure to choose Vonvé Bridal boutique!

pinned beauty product reviews Anouschka Venter - www.pampermenow.co.za I’m really excited to be able to trying the Africology Anti-Oxidant Serum as I’ve been convinced for a while now that we all need to add a serum to our daily antiaging routine. I wrote an article about this last year and listed the Africology Anti-Oxidant Serum as one of the serums that I’d like to try. In the simplest of terms, they are molecules that can inhibit the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which can contribute to cell damage. In the context of skin care, the use of a serum containing antioxidants can greatly enhance any skin care regime, as well as add protection from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays.

produce free radicals whey they absorb UV rays. This means certain sunscreens may cause more wrinkles than they prevent. AM: Apply to your face before you apply your moisturizer or sunscreen and let it absorb completely to protect from free radicals caused by infrared radiation PM: Focus on the lip and eye area and especially the neck area, to boost cellular energy production. 1. Antioxidants fight cell damage by neutralizing freeradicals before they attack our healthy cells. We all know that we need to apply SPF everyday to protect us from UVA & UVB rays. However, I recently learnt, that anti-oxidants aid in fighting free radicals caused by infrared radiation which is actually much more damaging. Even though antioxidants can’t get rid of the wrinkles you already have, they help prevent the breakdown of elastin by neutralizing those free radicals before they start attacking our healthy cells. 2. Plays a vital role in cellular energy production (i.e. generating energy within skin cells), which promotes healthy skin growth. Works wonders in treating thin, aging skin around the lips and eyes. Plumps up fine lines and wrinkles and regenerates vitamin E production. It directly promotes membrane lipids, inactivates superoxide and supports cellular energy production. Our Anti-Oxidant serum also contains evening primrose oil (rich in Omega 6 fatty acids) and borage seed oil, both of which contain gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an excellent emollient, antioxidant, and cell-regulator, promoting healthy skin growth. 1) Infrared radiation Which is why we need to apply this serum under our SPF, so we are protected from both UV rays as well as infrared radiation. 2) Certain Chemicals Certain SPF’s have chemical ingredients in it which

mothers are

lovers

As mothers, we know all too well how easy it is to become so focussed on managing our work obligations and our family's needs, that we overlook our own. We may eat erratically, get too little sleep, spend hours driving our children to sports and friends and, not least of all, neglect the fact that we are sensual beings, not just mothers but also lovers. We need to keep our individuality, cherish our personal relationship with our own sexuality and spend intimate, loving time with our partners. It seems appropriate that during May in which Mother's day occurs, we remind ourselves of some of the ways we can stay in touch with our own needs. By doing this and taking care of ourselves we also make sure that we are better mothers and partners. Mothers are all too familiar with schedules spending enormous amounts of energy organising events for the rest of the family; taking time to schedule “me time” is just as important. One way to do this is to book a specific date and time for someone else to take care of the kids – an outing to the aquarium, a movie or fun on the beach – and write it on the calendar. As essential as mom is, trust that your kids can survive for a few hours without you and that your phone can be turned off without a huge calamity befalling them. Then it's the time for you to indulge in that decadent cup of hot chocolate topped with a marshmallow and extra cream, turn on the music that gets your groove on and indulge your senses. The bath is also the perfect place to make friends with your body and its “imperfections”. Sure you may have stretch marks or a C-section scar, but loving your body and the miracle it has performed in creating new life is so valuable. And your partner probably thinks you are perfect just the way you are. Bath time is also the ideal opportunity to reconnect with your own sexuality and to love yourself. There are many stylish and waterproof vibrators available that can be bought discreetly online. The Intimate Pleasure Kit for women is specifically designed with a woman's delight in mind. This understated lipstick-style personal vibrator will caress your pleasure-spot and other erogenous zones, with

scintillating vibrations. The kit includes a 50ml Whet Personal Lubricant and comes in an organza storage bag.

Another way that to take care of our bodies, particularly before and after giving birth, are pelvic floor exercises. These are often referred to as Kegel exercises after the obstetrician who developed them, and that can build up and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor that support the bowel, bladder, urethra and uterus. Kegel exercisers like FunFactory's SmartballsTeneo Duo and Uno, as well as the Lelo Luna Beads and the Ami set of three progressively sized balls by Je Joue, are specifically designed for strengthening and toning; they make doing the pelvic floor exercises easier, fun and more effective and work on the same principle as lifting weights by increasing your resistance and accelerating your progress. Kegel exercisers are an excellent way for pregnant women to prepare for childbirth and are useful for treating and preventing urinary incontinence and uterine prolapse. They may also help to increase sexual satisfaction and are a great way for mothers to get back in touch with their bodies, and remember to use a good quality water-based lubricant like Whet Personal Lubricant to help insertion. Bubble baths may not be every mother's cup of tea but we should remember how important it to set aside a little time to do something, that makes us feel good or happy and that reinforces the unique individuals that we are, regardless of how small. The key is to tap into what honestly helps you to feel rejuvenated. “Me time” doesn't always have to be solo time. For some it may be book-club, meeting friends for a chat and a laugh or connecting with your partner on an emotional and/or physical level. It isn't something that should be have a low priority, so explain to your family why it is important for you to take care of yourself. Dr Phil says that “A good mother is not one who only sacrifices; a good mother is also able to give of herself. If you don't have passion and happiness in your own life, you can't give it to your children.” Article: Whet Sensuality Emporium www.whet.co.za

noted your

epidermis is showing

When I was a kid, we used go around teasing each other as if this was some embarrassing declaration. Of course the joke was that it’s almost always showing, especially in the summer! Our physical body is our face to the world, but it’s not all of us. If we consider that our skin is the clothing for who we really are, then what do you look like naked? Does your inner self reflect what’s on the outside and vice-versa? Well, if you are a cast

member of Jersey Shore, I would say the answer might be yes…but then there is the question of when is exposing too much epidermis making up for a lack of something underneath? And what about what you wear on your body? This, too, is an extension and expression of your true self and has nothing to do with looking like you stepped out of the latest issue of Vogue. The goal is to be so in harmony with your thoughts, words and deeds that it shows in your personality, clothes and interactions with others; save the masks and uniforms for Halloween or

a tv reality show. The irony is that most of the time transparency happens whether you like it or not what’s going on the inside will automatically be seen on the outside. So if you are not quite feeling like your magnificence is reflected in your Manolo’s (or your substance in your Snooki-bump or spray-tan), give me a buzz. I can be your outer mirror and inner stylist to help every part of you shine! Article: Kristina Leonardi http://kristinaleonardi.com/

healthy skin

Simply Nutrition's top tips for a healthy skin: Include foods which help to detoxify your liver and kidneys and therefore cleanse your skin. These include apples, artichokes, beetroot and asparagus. Include Omega-3 rich oily fish and omega-6 rich linseeds, seeds and nuts which help to soften and hydrate the skin and protect against sun damage. Eat avocados (now in season), because they provide antioxidant vitamins A, C and E as well as monounsaturated fats. Antioxidants help to slow the ageing process. Monounsaturated fats help to keep skin supple and These are especially great for anyone who suffers from eczema and acne. Make sure you drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, to hydrate the skin and help flush out toxins. Avoid alcohol which dehydrates the skin, creates harmful free radicals and depletes the skin of important nutrients such as vitamin B and vitamin C. Alcohol weakens blood capillaries, causing to thread veins. Avoid refined sugars. It's suggested that the effects of refined sugars on the elasticity of the skin are similar to smoking, leading to wrinkles and skin ageing. Use a moisturiser containing an sun protection factor (SPF), remembering to apply it to areas of your skin

which are often exposed to sunlight such as the hands and the chest. So, use a hand cream with SPF and use your SPF moisturiser on your neck and chest. Be cautious of moisturisers that contain harmful chemicals because they can damage your skin. Spend three to five minutes every day brushing your body in long, sweeping motions towards the heart. This helps to improve lymphatic drainage and circulation as well as shifting stubborn cellulite. Muffin-topped winter beef stew Ingredients • 500g braising steaks , cut into bite-sized chunks • 2 tbsp plain flour , seasoned with pepper and a little salt • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 450g carrots , cut into chunks • 2 large parsnips , cut into chunks • 1 bay leaf • 2 tbsp sundried or regular tomato paste • 300ml red wine or extra stock • 450ml vegetable stock • 225g plain flour • 3 tsp baking powder • 140g cheddar , coarsely grated • 2 tbsp olive oil • 150ml milk Method: 1. Heat oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Toss the beef in seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole. Fry the beef over a high heat until browned all over - it's easiest to do this in batches. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 2. Add 2 tbsp water and the onion to the pan, stir well over a medium heat, scraping up the crusty bits from the bottom of the pan. Lower the heat and fry gently for 10 mins, stirring occasionally until the onions have softened. 3. Tip in the carrots, parsnips and bay leaf, then fry for 2 mins more. Return the beef to the pan, stir in the tomato paste, wine if using, and stock, then bring to the boil. Cover and cook in the oven for 1¾-2 hrs until the meat is tender. Can be made up to 2 days ahead or frozen for up to 1 month. Defrost thoroughly in the fridge before topping and baking. Take out of the oven and increase the temperature to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. 4. To make the topping, sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl and add half the cheese. Mix olive oil and milk, then stir into the flour to make a soft, slightly sticky dough. Add more milk, if necessary. Spoon the dough over the meat and vegetables, sprinkle with the remaining cheese and bake for about 15 mins until golden, risen and cooked through.

disconnected in a highly connected world - fruit salad, anyone?

Everyday, we are inundated with email, blogs, texts, status updates, tweets galore and more. Although we are more connected through technology than we have ever been, people are more disconnected than ever. What kind of control do you have over the quality of interaction you have with the people who matter to you most? We can use technology to keep friends up to date with the latest photos of your holiday, or by sharing an interesting article, or even more mundane things like what you ate for

breakfast or how bored you are at work. How much of that is really meeting your need to share and bond with others? A Facebook 'like' simply cannot replace actually getting together with a friend over coffee or a glass of wine! Although social media tools have their pros and cons for connecting with the people we care about, something is missing from those interactions - they are a bit like a fruit salad that only has apples and oranges in it. Diana Ross sings, “Reach out and touch somebody's hand, make this world a better place, if you can.” We are humans, and humans need to feel 'touched' by other humans, not

computers. Some people might say that it's better to have some fruit than none at all – but hopefully you have enough variety in your human relationships to make to a tasty fruit salad. To do this, make the effort to have a meaningful interaction with someone in your life at least once a week. If you're not sure who that person should be or if you don't have time, let me help you to work out which relationships would be a healthy, colourful fruit salad, and which are just a bunch of artificial flavours. A unique star studded gala evening destined to become the black tie event of the year, featuring 14 acclaimed South African chefs, seven adept sommeliers and seven celebrated artists all under one roof in aid of youth development, will be held in the Cape Town City Hall on Thursday, 5 September 2013. Presented by Mercedes-Benz South Africa, 'Chefs who share – the ART of giving' will treat guests to an evening of glamour, culinary artistry and fine art – all for a worthy cause. All the monies from the ticket sales and the proceeds of an art auction will go towards two youth development charities: Make a Difference Foundation (MAD) and Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. “We are delighted to be in a position to host this inaugural 'Chefs who share' event in Cape Town. Together with our partners we hope to take this concept even further with similar events overseas in support of our chosen South African charities,” says event organiser Barbara Lenhard who has worked tirelessly to make her dream of creating this unforgettable evening of sharing a reality. The chefs are from all over South Africa and will be divided into pairs to share their culinary genius and individual menus with limited groups of guests. Each chef duo will be joined by a highly respected sommelier who will ensure that every dish is paired to perfection with a top South African wine. The evening will culminate with an auction of original works of art donated by participating artists. The beneficiaries of this singular event, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, both share a proud record of running successful youth development programmes that have made a difference to the lives of young South Africans from less fortunate backgrounds. Spearheaded by Francois Pienaar in 2003, MAD identifies and nurtures talented youths to become role models through a mentorship programme. Literacy and environmental awareness is promoted through a broad based educational programme. With a singular mission of using the power of sport as a tool for social change, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation helps children to overcome the limitations o f c h a l l e n g i n g s o c i a l i s s u e s f ro m p o v e r t y, homelessness and violence to drug abuse and AIDS. Founded over 10 years ago under the patronage of Nelson Mandela, the foundation is part of a worldwide programme of sports related community projects. Chefs who share' is destined to become one of the most prestigious events on the Cape Town social calendar. The event enables guests to get up close and personal with South Africa's finest chefs, sommeliers and artists and offers companies the opportunity to treat clients to a very special evening whilst supporting a worthy cause.
