A graduate of Virginia Tech, Mary Cox has enjoyed a career that has spanned three decades, with her tenure at Virginia Commonwealth University starting in 1992. Her role there, as university architect, is to oversee the work of design architects and engineers, and to create an attractive and cohesive campus environment. Cox has been responsible for managing more than $2 billion worth of new construction, renovations and additions while at VCU and has overseen the completion of two master plans. She leads the mentoring track for the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute at VCU, and has served in leadership positions for the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects, the national AIA board of directors and the Association of University Architects. Cox is a trustee of the Virginia Museum for Architecture and Design, and an AIA Fellow. This is her second year as a judge in this program.

Chris Morrison, a principal in the Perkins+Will Washington, D.C., office, has more than 20 years of experience in architecture, historic preservation, sustainability, adaptive reuse and planning. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and chemistry at St. Louis University and his master of architecture degree at the University of Maryland. He served as the principal in charge in the design and approval of the first LEED-certified condominium in Washington, D.C. Morrison is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Lambda Alpha International and the DC Preservation League. He also serves as a lecturer and guest architectural critic for the University of Maryland, a guest architectural critic for the Catholic University of America, and as a supervisor and mentor for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards Intern Development Program. A Fellow and very active member of the American Institute of Architects, Morrison has served on numerous committees and has represented the group in several capacities over the years. His projects have received numerous design awards, including, most recently, The Catalyst Award and The Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects Washington Chapter, the D.C. Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation, a Merit Award from the General Services Administration’s Design Excellence Program, and the Custom Home Award from Custom Home Magazine. This is Morrison’s first year as a judge in this program.

A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Steve White graduated magna cum laude in 1995 with a bachelor of architecture from North Carolina State University’s College of Design, where he was a Caldwell Fellow. He also studied art and architecture in Florence, Italy. White began his career working in Old Town Alexandria. This month White became a principal and studio director for the Washington, D.C., office of Fentress Architects, based in Denver, Colo. With additional studios in Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Shanghai and London, Fentress is internationally known for innovative, award-winning design of airports, museums, convention centers and laboratories, and higher education, office, civic and governmental buildings. His previous work with HartmanCox Architects in Washington, D.C., comprised museum, office, residential, academic and institutional projects. Clients include the General Services Administration, Boston Properties, the city and county of Denver, the Morehead-Cain Foundation at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. White currently serves as president-elect for the American Institute of Architects | Washington, D.C., chapter, co-chairs the AIA|DC Design Excellence Committee and is a member of the George Washington Chapter of Lambda Alpha, the honorary society for the advancement of land economics. This is White’s fourth year as a judge in this program.
