THE ROOSTER A monthly update from the Inland Empire Offroad Association

What’s New The Glamis season has started with Veterans Day weekend, and many members are staying in the dunes through Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is Almost Here

Veterans Day at Glamis The annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the flag pole in Glamis was held once again this year, and there were huge crowds of people in attendance. There were at least two different groups from Inland Empire there, since the later arrivals could not get as close to the front of the event. Many of the attendees from the group were Veterans themselves, and we are all grateful for their service. In the aerial photo below you can see how big the crowd was:

Camp is already set up for Thanksgiving in Wash 6, and people will be arriving most days between now and then.

Mona Bacon Memorial Poker Run By Mike Bacon, Photos by Mike Bacon & Pat Starr With things being shut down again for COVID we decided to go out early for the poker run weekend, and convinced Doug & Kris, and Jim to join us on Wednesday. We arrived about 2pm to find warm weather and Doug & Kris right on our heels. A couple hours later, just as we were wondering where Jim was, I received a text from him that he was at Red Earth with a bad wheel bearing on his RZR trailer. He came in about an hour later and I took him back to Red Earth so he could drive his RZR back, and he would fix his trailer the next morning.

On Thursday Jim went off to fix his trailer and Doug & Kris, and Pat and I went for a ride to try to find the jet plane crash site from a few weeks ago. After a quick discussion with one of the rangers we found the area, which wasn’t difficult because there were about a hundred orange cones leading the way. We walked around the area for a little bit and picked up a few small items. The area was littered with small pieces of carbon fiber and plastic, and a very strong smell of jet fuel and hydraulic oil. We headed back to camp and relaxed. Todd Cochran came in with his new (to him!) toy hauler and RS1 RZR, and Jim made it back with his RZR trailer in tow. We all went up to the Alamo for dinner.

Friday we were going to go show Jim and Todd the crash site, but when we arrived at the site, or at least close to it, we found a group setting signs restricting access, photography, and collection of items, so we didn’t get to see very much. We went on crossing over the hills and found a great, tight canyon, similar to Pooch Canyon, and eventually ended up at the Blu Inn for lunch. When we arrived back at camp it wasn’t long before Dave Huggard arrived, and we went to the Alamo again for dinner. Later Dana & Daniel arrived, as well as PJ, Melissa, Allie, and Marshall. Saturday we were off and running on the Poker Run although a little late. We went up Techtonic Gorge and down Tierra Del Sol, went by the Honda monument and the Pumpkin Patch, and ended up at the Blu Inn just in time to meet the Kastle for lunch. After lunch we went by Little People and Bin Laden’s Cave on our way back to camp.

We relaxed at camp for a little while, got everyone’s poker score cards completed, then went after the Closest To the Pin Competition handily won by Dana’s husband Junior. It was then Hot Dog time! Dinner was great, and as usual I ate way too much! We then gave out prizes for the poker run, won by Dana with Aces & Eights! A nice fire completed a great day!

Early Sunday morning the wind came up with a vengeance and everyone pretty much stayed inside. Dave and Todd left for home, as well as Dana, Daniel, and Junior. Jim & Nancy, Doug & Kris, and Pat & I went up to the Alamo for dinner, where because of the wind and despite the COVID regulations, we were allowed to sit inside. The wind blew all night and was still blowing when we loaded up Monday morning and headed for home. I want to sincerely thank all who participated and have supported this event this year and the years before, and especially all the people who have donated prizes and food. Thank you all!

Looking Back on More Anza Fun By Paul Kastle Mike covered most of the fun from the great annual Mona Bacon Memorial trip to Anza, but I wanted to pick up where he left off and talk about the fun we had on Sunday. Yeah, it was a little breezy, but as usual in the desert it wasn’t nearly as bad when we were out riding. Mike offered to let me take out the Talon so I led Allie and my Dad on a trip out toward the plane crash site. We had fun, and Allie says Anza is her favorite place to ride the Ace. It really is perfect there, and she went wherever she wanted. We even went to the OHV training area, where the Ace just didn’t quite have enough to take the tubes. The Talon had to show that it was as capable as its RZR predecessor, so the following photos were necessary:

We also decided to have a little fun an show a little scrap salvaging from the plane crash site. My guess is this is the type of thing the signs were recommending against:

Thanksgiving Pot Luck In this era of COVID, we have been wondering what to do about the Thanksgiving dinner, and other group events in camp. While nobody in the group wants to tell people what they can and can’t do (we’ll leave that to you Governor Newsom) we do want to make sure that whatever we do is safe and enjoyable for as many of our friends as possible. First and foremost, you should only do what you are comfortable with. Nobody should feel the need to be any closer to anyone else than they feel is safe. Along these lines, it would probably be best if we could set the food up outside, weather permitting. If we are forced to put the food inside due to weather, we should then spread out picking up food a little more than usual and only have a few people in the trailer at any one time. After we get food, people can choose to eat wherever they want, and hopefully the weather will cooperate better than last year and allow us to eat outside. We won’t have tape on the ground 6 ft apart or signs showing proper mask use, but hopefully we can still have a nice event that many people contribute to and people can be comfortable with. I usually go through and get food after everyone else has, and will plan on doing the same this year, even if it means a longer wait. In the mean time I’ll be hanging out outside and hopefully enjoying a beautiful day and the company of great friends, even if we are a little bit further apart than usual. For anyone who chooses not to participate, we totally understand and will look forward to your company at other times during the trip. We are looking forward to being together in the dunes again, and want everyone to have a good time. -P.J.

This month we’d like to thank Mike Bacon for sending in an article for the newsletter, and encourage everyone else to do the same. We’d also like to join in and thank our Veterans whether they were able to attend the flag pole ceremony or not. Please send your contributions for future newsletters to me at pkastle@msn.com and we will publish them along with a calendar of events each month. v -Paul, Melissa, Allie, and Marshall. 7
