THE ROOSTER A monthly update from the Inland Empire Offroad Association

What’s New The sand season is under way, and members are set up at Wash 6 for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Dinner We will again be having a pot luck Thanksgiving dinner in camp on Thursday, November 22nd. Sign up online to make sure we cover the basics.

Veterans Day 2018 By Mike Bacon Photos by Pat Starr Pat and I arrived late Thursday night and drove right in the middle of camp to sleep for the night. We then moved to our spot in the morning. Once set up and greeting everyone we pretty much spent the day sorting things out as the wind was blowing. By late afternoon the wind settled down enough for a quick trip to Olds, Pat’s first ride in the dunes. We were able to have a small fire Friday night. Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny! The wind gave the Vet’s a break and we had a beautiful day for the Veteran’s Ceremony. John and Anna led us all out to the flag pole where we found a spot back a ways from the center of the ceremony.

Melissa’s Broken Ankle Unfortunately on Halloween night Melissa tripped over Shelby in the kitchen and fell, breaking her right ankle. After two weeks they installed screws and plates to hold it together, but this means the younger Kastle’s won’t be in the dunes for a while.

As the ceremony started we could see a flight of eight planes headed our way. As they got closer the smoke came on and all eight flew over the ceremony! We were then treated to multiple flyovers with

with a great ride. We ended up hanging around camp as I was expecting a couple of phone calls to deal with some things at home. After dinner we had a nice fire. Sunday the wind came up so we didn’t do any riding. We spent most of the day sitting in the garage of my trailer out of the wind. It is now known as “The Veranda”. Pat and I went to town in the afternoon looking for a part for my oven to no avail, but we did end up going to Wally World and got some lunch. Monday turned in to another Sunday with the wind blowing all day. We rode around the wash a bit to collect firewood, but spent most of our day on The Veranda.

We are set for the rest of the week, and looking forward to Thanksgiving. Hope to see you all here!

More Veterans Day Pics Pete and Jeremy Hagen were able to make it out for Veterans Day, and Jeremy flew his new DJI Spark Drone. It got some great pics, and is a nice compact drone. Check out their pics below:

BLM Radio Traffic Now Encrypted? Over the last few years, we have enjoyed listening to BLM radio traffic at Glamis. We found that they were using VHF frequencies that were easily accessible using our race radios, so we added the BLM frequencies to them so we could listen along. We have heard a variety of interesting events during the busy weekends, and it has show many of us how bad some of the visitors the rangers have to deal with actually are. It is surprisingly common for a taillight or registration stop to turn into someone with felony warrants and often drugs in their possession. It seems that the Rangers do a decent job of picking their targets, and when someone is clean and has the appropriate attitude, they often get let go with a warning. It seems that this season we might not get to listen along, as others have reported online and we have observed noticeable static on the frequencies we used to listen on. It has been suggested that this is because they started using an encrypted system for their law enforcement transmissions, which unfortunately would mean that there’s nothing we could do to listen in. I’m still optimistic that the Medical Aid calls on BLM MED will be unencrypted, but time will tell. It was at least fun to listen along while it lasted, and I’ll have more to report once I’ve been out there in person. -P.J.

This month we’d like to thank Mike Bacon for writing up his trip while still at Glamis. Next month we’ll have more coverage of the first real big trip of the season. We’d also like to hear from you, so if you have pictures, text, comments, jokes, or anything that you want to share, please send it to me at pkastle@msn.com. We will publish what content we have and a calendar of upcoming events in every month’s newsletter. -Paul, Melissa, Allie, and Marshall. 5
