Say What? PIONEER DJS-1000

It seems that there is a new piece of DJ kit hitting the market almost every other day. The new piece of hardware from Pioneer is the DJS-1000 which is billed as a DJ sampler for use in conjunction with a regular DJ set up. There is no denying that this in the right hands will make a huge impact on a DJ set but does the line between DJing and live performance need blurring any further? With Pioneer already having the Toraiz SP-16 is there really a need for further hardware? Only a hands-on test will prove this to be the case or not. Watch this space.

MIXXLIST

“Not another music app I hear you cry, but let me finish. In this day in age we all have playlists for this, playlists for that and conveniently thye are all on separate platforms. The beauty of Mixxlist is that it can collate music from those different playlists from the likes of Soundcloud, YouTube and Spotify and effectively repackage them in one easy to use and fully customizable playlist. To me it sounds like genius, but the proof is in the pudding. Expect a full match report next issue.

WE LOVE EL CHIRINGUITO

Like a boho phoenix, El Chirginuito rose from the ashes of where Eden once stood at The Rixos Hotel, The Palm. In its place is now a chilled-out beach club that caters for the more discerning music lover. El Chiringuito is an institution in its native Ibiza and you could quite easily be on the White Isle as soon as you walk in the leafy front door. It is when the sun begins to set that El Chiringuito takes on a different vibe and the energy levels are increased tenfold by the local and international DJ’s that visit Dubai on a weekly basis. Take this seasons bookings for instance – Maceo Plex, Sven Vath and Black Coffee to name only a few of the impressive a-list artists that will be leading the party out on the terrace. Not forgetting the stunning Saturday brunch that is currently on offer. With a sharing concept featuring food to die for, a perfectly chilled pool for those hot afternoons and the other worldly décor that adorns El Chiringuito throughout mean that this is one spot you will fall in love with too. For more information go to facebook.com/ElChiringuitoDubai.

What we did RICHIE HAWTIN @ BLUE MARLIN IBIZA UAE

The day was glorious, the weather just on the right side of hot, not a cloud in the sky and a light breeze in the air, perfect conditions for a party and what a party it turned out to be. We arrived early for a change expecting some queues but nothing, to be fair it was only 3pm, so the post brunch crowd stragglers were still tucking into their desserts back in the Marina. This initially worried me as sometimes if there was a big weekend previously or it was too far from payday then occasionally it took a while to fill up, but this was Hawtin, of course they will come. So, I had a word with myself and we all headed to the bar.

A handful of vodkas in, the sun started to dip, on point resident Frederick Stone appeared and so did the people, they came in their droves, all eager and excitable, the atmosphere electric and then around 8pm a waft of blonde hair caught my eye in the booth, Richie was here and ready to go. All great DJ’s build from what is already around them and Frederick had done a great job working the room, enough for Richie to jump on those flowing coattails and guide the night along, rolling, dropping, building and banging out tune after tune. I don’t think anyone was stood still, it was impossible as this music played out, it was infectious. For me the highpoint was “Grindhouse”, ok its more than a few years old, but those sounds and that demonic vocal blasting across the room had me smiling all the way home. Great booking as it’s only his 2nd time in the region; great set and looking forward to what BMI have planned next. Words by Stephen Day

LUCIANO

Chilean maestro Luciano and his imprint Cadenza have been an integral part of techno, house and its many sub genres for some time. Ahead of his headline show at Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE on Friday, November 3 we look back over some of Luciano’s hits‌.

LUCIANO & QUENUM ORANGE MISTAKE (2003) Cadenza’s first release and what a release it is. Tailor made for the Circoloco terrace, with its snapping percussion and slinky bass wiggles Orange Mistake was and still is an incendiary track to pull out come the early after hours.

ARGY – LOVE DOSE (LUCIANO REMIX) (2005) Another track that was made for the Circoloco, this track is possibly one of the most quintessential tracks from the minimal and micro house era before the genre ate itself. A firm favourite with Loco Dice et all.

SCI.FI.HI.FI VOL 2 (2006) This fine mix album from Soma demonstrates Luciano’s mixing skills and tune selection to a tee. Subtle and grooving leading to techy and banging, Luciano can shift through gears all day long. Crafted using 2 bits of wax and his imagination Luciano delivers an essential 21 track mix.

MICHEL CLEIS – LA MEZCLA (2009) One of the most recognisable hits from Luciano’s Cadenza imprint, when this landed in 2009 there was no escaping this flute infected techno groover. It has since been re-released but the original record was an immediate and signalled Luciano’s native ear on a global level.

JENNIFER LOPEZ

117 LIVE continue their schedule of top flight concerts with a visit from one of the most influential female artists of our time – Jennifer Lopez… Fresh from her record breaking “All I Have” Las Vegas residency at The Axis auditorium at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino Jennifer Lopez is more than match fit and she is ready to rock the Autism Rocks Arena to its foundations on Friday, November 17. Her Vegas residency has eclipsed that of any show in 2016 and became the most successful residency of the year by grossing $34.6 million. It was also met with critical acclaim by everybody from Billboard to Rolling Stone and MTV News was quoted as calling the residency “a quintessentially Las Vegas show”. This showcasing of J-Lo’s talents is not confined to just her stage shows as she has become one of the only females in history to have a number album in “J.Lo” and a number one movie in “The Wedding Planner” in the same week (2001).

Since the early days of her career Jennifer Lopez has gone on to become one of the most important and powerful celebrities in the world today. As well as becoming a successful best-selling musician and actor in her own right, Jennifer has worked to highlight a number of issues facing Latino’s. J-Lo’s humanitarian work has seen her collaborate with several high-profile charities and organisations such as Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, United Nations Foundation, Human Rights Campaign and to the benefit of those affected by atrocities caused by Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Sandy, the September 11 attacks and the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting. It is clear that Jennifer Lopez has that star quality in abundance and with her show stopping concerts comes an all singing, all dancing performance befitting of the reputation that she has created for herself. Be prepared to sing and dance the night away when she lands at the Autism Rocks Arena on Friday, November 17.

ANALOG ROOM 5

In 2012 Mehdi Ansari and Siamak Amidi began their mission to bring to Dubai a flavour of electronic music that didn’t really have any boundaries or labels, it was just good, quality music. What Analog Room stands for almost seemed to buck the trend of what Dubai’s club scene was about and still is (in large). Where some promoters were going big, the AR crew delved deeper and for their first party they invited along the finest exponent of the black and white tee / red wine combo – Move D. From there the line-ups and parties just got better and better.

In that time, as well as bringing the finest selectors and downright heroes from across the board such as Ben UFO, Kevin Saunderson, Francois K and most recently Roman Flugel, AR also harbour a burning desire to push the regional and international talent that makes up their team of residents. Artist such as the recent Karina (Zoo Project), Delano Smith (Detroit legend), Move D (no introduction required) and of course the original residents Shemroon, Siamak Amidi and Nasrawi. The time has now come to hand the reigns back to the region and to the artists that are now beginning to repay the city in which AR have lead the way. Expect the rest of the season to showcase some of the regions finest selectors and of course the AR crew themselves. To celebrate turning 5 there will be an evening with the Analog Room Soundsystem showcasing the crew’s residents, with there being some serious talent in their ranks this could mean huge surprises on the night. As an added bonus, there will also be an accompanying boat party with a special guest aboard. So, make sure you keep Thursday, November 2 clear for this one. INTERNATIONAL

Charlotte de Witte has emerged as a shining tehcno star in the last 12 months and with a slew of releases on highly respected labels and stand out performances at some of the best techno clubs and festivals in the world. I can guarantee you will be hearing a lot more from this in form Belgian artist… How has things been on the road this year compared to last? It’s quite impossible to compare. So many things have changed these last couple of months. I’ve toured the world, just got back from Australia and Central and South America and I’m about to leave to Asia for gigs in Bali, Singapore, China and India. This combined with all the European gigs in between have turned me into someone who’s actually constantly on the road or on flights, which wasn’t the case last year. I started travelling the world, and I absolutely love it! What has been your stand out gig this year Charlotte? That’s a tough one. I had my Awakenings debut in the beginning of the festival season in Amsterdam. I never expected there to be so many people so early! It was a very unique experience and I deeply cherish those memories. Another festival that definitely should be mentioned here is Belgium’s Rock Werchter. They usually don’t book DJs on their main grounds but I got the honor to close one of their stages. It was completely full with over 15.000 people. The atmosphere in there was unlike something I’ve ever seen before. I’m still getting goose bumps thinking of that one! What has been happening in the studio lately? Not much… To be honest, touring all the time doesn’t leave me with a lot of time to spend in the studio. Luckily I’ve been quite productive in the studio before summer season started so after having released Closer EP on Mary Go Wild Black, I still have two other EPs coming up early 2018. One on Suara and one on the recently relaunched NovaMute. In a genre that is dominated by men, do you ever feel that you are treated differently because of your gender? Well, yes. Of course. It still occurs when you read something online, you think to yourself “would they also say these things this exact way if I would be a man?”. But in general I have the feeling that women in the industry are much easier accepted than they were years ago. It’s a fact that the scene is still dominated by men, but that’s also the case when you look at fire fighters or police officers. It

doesn’t have to be 50 – 50 but people should be treated equally and get equal chances. What is your solution to this? Time. These things need time. The most difficult and important challenge in this would be to change people minds. And that is happening. Steady but slowly. With you due to make your UAE debut next month, what do you have in store for us? I usually bring a selection of my favourite tracks of this moment and some unreleased tracks of mine. It all really depends on what time my set is planned as well. I guess I would be able to give you a more pinned down answer in the days before the show. In any case, I’m extremely looking forward to my Dubai debut, also because I have some friends living there who I haven’t seen in a while and who will be joining. What is your take on the techno scene here either from what you have read or been told? From what my friends told me, I know that the techno scene in Dubai is in a lift. The underground is getting bigger and so is the amount of international techno artists you book and represent. I’m very curious to experience it all myself in a couple of days! Thanks for doing this interview with me! See you soon in Dubai!

SECOND TO NONE

With 360° and their famous roof terrace back open for a new season they have already had some stand out performances from the old guard of house music such as Joey Negro and Mr V. To help celebrate the open-air venues 13th birthday on Thursday, November 9 they have enlisted an artist that is very much from the new school of house. Secondcity is a UK born Chicago raised artist that is racking up some serious air miles at the moment. Thanks to his releases on esteemed labels such as Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, Claude Von Stroke’s Dirty Bird imprint and Huxley’s Saints & Sonnets labels have all helped to cement Secondcity as an up and coming player in the house music scene. Secondcity has just completed arguably one of his most successful summers to date and as well as him completing a US tour, dates in Russia, Belguim, ADE in Amsterdam and countless UK dates he has just completed a season long residency at Sankey’s Ibiza as part of the Abode team. Helping Secondcity set the party off will be resident DJ’s Jack Woodcock, CN Williams and Sophie Foster. As it is the venues 13th birthday there will be plenty of promotions and prizes on offer during the course of the event. For more information go to facebook.com/360Dubai

SENSATION-AL Dutch mega event Sensation have for the past 18 years been wowing thousands of clubbers with their extreme stage production and heavy weight line-ups. Dousing Meydan Racecourse in a sea of white on Friday, November 10 will see Sensation bring with them a huge array of the biggest EDM artist in the world…

Mr White has been there from the very start and is so entrenched in the Sensation ethos that his very character reflects that of the event. Entrusted to open up proceedings for all Sensation events worldwide, no Sensation would not be complete without the man in the white suit amping up the crowds. Sam Feldt is an artist that has emerged as a true star in the burgeoning house scene in the past few years. In a short space of time Sam is taken the charts by storm with his re-envisioning of “Show Me Love” with Kimberly Anne on vocals. His debut album “Sunrise” is also currently taking Sam around the world where much of his tour is sold out.

A relative newcomer to the EDM scene, Danny Avila has accomplished much since his debut at Ultra Music Festival in 2013. As a result of this Danny became the youngest resident to ever sign with Las Vegas super club Hakkasan. This has led to Spaniard Avila blowing up world-wide and with tracks like “Loco” with fellow artists Nervo, you can see why he has become so popular. Having reinvented himself from the heady days of electro house Don Diablo is now flying high in the EDM sphere and his high-octane DJ sets have won him legions of new fans. Amsterdam natives Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are also regulars with the Sensation crew and regularly release on Dutch super label Spinnin’. The duo’s recent smash hit on their own label Sono Music – “La Vela” will take the roof off Sensation when it is surely dropped. Headlining the EDM extravaganza is Swedish/ Greek mega star Steve Angello. His recent track “Rejoice” is of biblical proportions will surely go down a treat during Steve’s peak time set. For more information go to facebook.com/sensation.

BASE

BASE Dubai have more finely curated events coming up over the next few weeks, Infusion Magazine takes a look at the highlights heading your way…

In association with UP7, BASE Dubai has a frightfully good party lined up for you on Halloween. Middle Eastern born but raised all over the world Bedouin are the production and DJ duo of Rami Abousabe & Tamer Malki and as well as a host of residents the open-air night spot will be transformed in to a neon glowing forest packed with the scariest characters. Expect some of the finest production to be found in Dubai this season. The first weekend in November is shaping up to monstrous and with the Thursday night session on November 2 featuring a special surprise guest you can be sure that it is going to be special, so keep your eyes and ears open for more information coming soon. However, Friday (November 3) night belongs to an artist that has blown away her peers since her 2016 debut single “OOOUUU” announced the arrival of Young M.A. This New Yorker has a promising career ahead of her so watch this space.

Looking ahead to Thursday, November 9 and BASE Dubai has instore for you a headline set from London production and DJ outfit Disciples. This trio certainly impressed Pete Tong with their early material so much that he signed them to his FFRR imprint immediately. With the group having a great 2014, it was the following year that they broke in to the limelight with their track with Calvin Harris “How Deep Is You Love” peaked at number 2 in the UK singles chart and took the top spot in Australia and Belguim. Rounding out our look at what BASE Dubai have coming up is a set from one of the most in demand party DJ’s on the planet right now – DJ Ruckus. Having been a resident at Las Vegas super club Hakkasan since it opened in 2013, Ruckus has also joined hip hop hall of fame group Run-DMC as a touring member in 2012. This gives a small idea of how good his skills are behind the decks. Take it from us they are second to none.

Soundstage GREG PEARSON

Scottish musician Greg Pearson gives Infusion Magazine the lowdown on his life in music… Biggest gig....Edinburgh’s NYE Hogmanay party to 10,000 people. I was a session musician playing piano and synth with a local Edinburgh band. On this night we supported The 1975 and The Pet Shop Boys. Best known...for being the little guy that left school early and eventually moved here to Dubai to follow my dreams as a musician. Most Proud...of my fiancé and my family, this goes without saying. On the music side, last year I performed at The Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix, which was incredible. I’m a massive F1 fan, so to perform in the paddock club was great. Artist to work with...is Dua Lipa and her team. From the past, Michael Jackson! One thing you may not know...I am colour-blind. I can’t tell the difference between red, green or brown. My sound is described as...uplifting acoustic pop My music sounds like...a mix between pop, country and well known singalongs. Decade to be alive...The 1970’s. I would have loved to be around when timeless bands like Queen, and the eagles were in their prime. The one instrument I couldn’t live without...has to be my acoustic guitar. I take it everywhere I go.

One thing you might not know about me is…i’m a professional photographer. My worst job ever was…a corporate desk job, I only lasted a month. My favourite ever record is…Frankie Knuckles - Your Love Dubai’s clubbing scene is…on the rise I’m really proud of…my father, he’s a true artist and will always be my forever idol. What track could you drop in every set? Layo & Bushwacka! - Raw Defined. I can’t live without…pasta. My biggest DJ achievement to date is…my residency at Plus Minus. What is your guilty pleasure? KFC If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… late 80’s witnessing the birth of acid house and techno If I could go back to back with any other DJ it would be…it’s hard to choose from all the great local talent, but I’d love to share decks with Maks and Sam Farsio. From the International artists, the legendary John Digweed as I grew up listening to his music which was a true inspiration

You can catch Mo Ezaby in action at upcoming Plus Minus events.

Eat Sleep Rave Repeat BRUNCH NATION,

MARRIOT HARBOUR HOTEL

Brunch Nation at The Croft, Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites is a civilized affair, chilled, cool, relaxed, informal but still with an air of elegance, it’s less what you’re wearing, more how you’re wearing it. Secondly it has a great pedigree, The Croft was set up by Ramsey trained Darren Velvick. Taking our seats inside as it’s still a little warm for the outdoors we are welcomed with a large pitcher of Pimms & lemonade arrives, solid start. This is also no buffet style bun fight, but a coursed menu that travels the world, well kind of, it’s themed around countries in the British Empire and takes in cuisine from a handful of them. We start down under in Oz with a selection of salads, some rocket, a chicken one, a cucumber based one and seafood. To be honest I’m not sure if I associate Australia with salads. From here we take a flight to the Far East and bamboo baskets appear, I’ve never been unhappy with this sight, the dim sum looks great, some BBQ chicken bao, ha gow and excellent shu mai, accompanied with traditional dipping sauces and chop sticks to master. A quick hop to India and we arrive at possibility my favourite course of the day. A chicken Tikka Masala, a lamb Rogan Josh, some grilled prawns and vegetable curry, served with rice, poppadum’s and parathas. Each bowl distinctive from the other, the spicing just on the right side and as a curry should be, it danced in my mouth but never took over. After such a great stop over, where do we go from here, back to Blighty of course for Beef Wellington, fish & chips and some cheesy leek croquettes. As tasty as this all was, especially the roasties on the side it seemed a little bit of a let-down following the curry. Don’t get me wrong, it was all very nice but something was missing, maybe carving the Wellington at the table or a Yorkshire pudding with great gravy would have nudged it. Vibrant colours

however were on display with dessert though, ok back to small pots of this and that, a cake or two, but they actually tasted of something. The hero for me was a bowl of bread and butter pudding sat under the light, it lured me in, it’s glistening slightly burnt custard top too much to resist. I dived in with both feet/hands and was transported back to Sunday lunch at my Nans house, I love food that does this, a food memory always makes me smile and is why dishes like this are classics, although my waist didn’t thank me my taste buds surely did, so much so I went back for seconds. With the time reaching 4pm, last orders were called, a cheeky Espresso Martini was in order and a nice touch of drinks vouchers to spend up on the hotels 52 floor bar in The Observatory. Full but not bursting we head off to the lift, including one of our guests who’s gluten and dairy free. Normally she struggles to get full value in these deals but the team at The Croft were great. All in all, a successful afternoon and a place that is trying to set itself away from the crowd and in my book, that’s something that should be applauded and visited by all.
