A monthly institution that’s been running longer than even us, this must-attend comedy road show is a constant bright spot in the city’s ever-packed calendar and returns to put a sunny slant on the January blues with three more comedians this month. Danny Mcloughlin, Rich Wilson and Markus Birdman are the men who’ll make you laugh, all comedy superstars in the making. And you can pick up a copy of Infusion Magazine while you’re there to keep you occupied during the drinks breaks. Win win. EZ @ ZERO GRAVITY UK Garage is a sound that never really went away and it’s fair to say it’s a sound most people adore. I personally grew up with inspirational CDs like Todd Edward’s ‘Locked On’ and other gems. Yet it’s taken me this long to witness arguably garage’s top selector, DJ EZ. Benji B calls him ‘King of the CDJ’s’ and it’s clear to see why, EZ is a bad man on the decks and he wasn’t holding back for his Zero Gravity set. To be succinct, this is one DJ you really should see before you die. It’s not just what he plays, but how he does it. He’s a proper DJ, and the crowd were in full agreement. Sadly his set seemed to be over in a flash at around 90 minutes, leaving the follow up DJ with an almost impossible job of closing the night. At that point it all became a bit ‘Dubai Marina’ for me personally with a little too much cheese to keep the crowd entertained... so I took a swift exit. But I’m delighted to have said ‘I’ve now witnessed one of the best DJs on the planet’. EZ, I salute you! GarethIsOnIt

GROOVE ON THE GRASS FEAT. RICHIE HAWTIN @ EMIRATES GOLF COURSE Love it or hate it, New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights out of the year, normally a mix of true clubbers and people who barely leave the house. And this year the city had a dizzying array of choice. As well as the standard fireworks we had the ear assault of Guetta & Garrix across town or Luciano up the road at BMI, but there was only one destination for me: Emirates Golf Club to witness the regional debut of the undisputed king of Techno, Richie Hawtin. The evening was perfectly built as usual by hand-picked local talents like Tobie Allen, Maks and Adam Rahman before GOTG boss Deian started to ramp it up in time for a solid strong set from John Acquaviva. The countdown began, the drums rolled, the glitter cannons went off and Hawtin stepped on stage. Richie played a set of banging bouncy techno with the trademark M-nus sounds at the fore, with plenty of clicks, beeps, drops and rolls. Everyone was as one, with arms in the air and feet moving, it was almost impossible to stand still. He looked like he was having a great time, we certainly did. Stephen Day

Nestled in a secluded nook you’ll find the brain child of Rahul Kaul & Hitesh Sugandhi, a cosy, minimalist venue snuggled away next to Meat & Co. With its understated entrance, brick wall backdrop and low level bespoke lighting, the bar reminds us of a modern day Speakeasy. Specializing in signature Cocktails & Oysters, Entourage boasts a mixology menu and vintage raw bar. We started proceedings with a selection of Oysters served on ice and Carpaccio which were presented elegantly and tasted ocean-fresh. For mains the stand out dishes were the Prawns Provencal & Papillote Sea Bass, cooked to perfection and served with an accompaniment of vegetables. With a selection of lounge and deep house as our soundtrack, Entourage made for the perfect pre club venue to enjoy a few drinks and a dinner. Vip Patel

IN THE NIC OF TIME Saved Records head honcho Nic Fanciulli kickstars the 2016 party season with a set at Eden on January 15 before jetting off to Beirut, New Zealand and Australia A very warm welcome back, you’ve got a long history with Dubai haven’t you? I’ve been coming to Dubai for about 12 years, it’s one of the places I go on holiday every year with the family, the city has always had a special place in my heart. My professional relationship with the city probably started around 10 years ago in 2005/2006 - my first show was with Renaissance, and after that I always played for Trilogy. I really feel the city has grown up in terms of musical knowledge. The music I play, and this is true around the world, went from being really niche to
being appreciated on a much bigger level, and the venues followed suit. Your brother has been out here a few times recently, how proud are you of his progress? I’m really proud of Mark, he helped me a lot on the label side of things over the years, and I owe a lot to him as he really helped turned Saved Records around. When I was running the label back in 2008/2009 I really didn’t have the time or resources to focus on it as much as I wanted, or needed to. Mark came straight out of university and really helped shape the label
into what it is today - we’re now coming up to our 135th release, so it’s really been an amazing journey for both of us. And what are the differences in musical styles and DJ styles between you? Mark’s musical knowledge is ridiculous - he’s been around music for a long time, and used to come and watch me play when he was 11 and 12 years old - his first gig was at 14. He’s the guy that will listen to Dave Clarke or Jeff Mills on a Sunday afternoon, and loves everything from Model 500 all the way through to Underground Resistance. My background is rooted firmly in house music, and I love what these techno guys do, and have worked with a lot of them over the years, but my focus is always on the groove and funk, and what gets dance floors moving. You had a big festival season this summer, and went back to back to back with Joris Voorn and Sasha at your own festival The Social. That must have been pretty special! Obviously playing with Joris is a no brainer, he’s one of my
best mates, and we’ve had our Ibiza residency (La Familia) together for the last two years, so playing b2b with him always works. When I was 16/17 I used to follow Sasha around the country with my girlfriend at the time, and go and see him and Digweed play for hours on end, so it’s always a special feeling to play with him. He’s such a nice, humble guy, and is actually one of my real heroes in the scene, so it’s always slightly surreal for me when we play together. You’re then playing 4 gigs in 4 nights in Australia and New Zealand – is that the most gigs you’d like to play consecutively, what’s the most you’ve done in a row? I think the most I’ve done in a row must be on the Around The World tour last year, definitely the most demanding! We visited 8 different countries and continents in 10 days. The concept behind the tour was to connect the dots between different cities and audiences around the world, through music. We started in Toronto, then went through to San Francisco, Manila, Tokyo, Mumbai, Dubai, Madrid, and

Cover Feature finally finished up in Manchester 10 days later - it was a lot of fun. I don’t really mind the consecutive shows, as I’m really lucky to be able to do what I love. When you’re older and retired, will your Grammy nomination be the coolest story you tell your grand kids? The Grammy Nomination was a great milestone, but for me there are also a lot of other things that are equally as important. Thinking back to the fun we had on the One+One tour in 2007 (with James Zabiela), that was probably another huge milestone for me, and something that I think was really important to my career at the time. Musically speaking I’m also really proud of some of the compilations I’ve put out over the years, and I’m working on a lot of new music at the moment, so I’m looking forward to sharing that with everyone later in 2016. Musically, what’s working for you at the moment – can you describe your sets? I absolutely love what Bicep are doing at the moment. They remind me of when I first made music as Skylark, it’s really raw, very housey, and very sample based with a great groove. They’re the ones that are making the records people dance to, every time I drop a Bicep record people ask me what it is. I also think &ME is just incredible - everything he does is gold, and he has a big single coming on Saved Records in March. You’re playing Beirut the night after Dubai, have you been there before, do you know what to expect? I love Beirut. I’ve played there a lot before, and it’s amazing, the crowds absolutely rock and its always so much fun, so I’m really looking forward to it. WINNERS 2015 was a truly vintage year for the city’s club and music scene, and we’re proud to have been a part of it. We’ve rounded up our highlights in our officially unofficial Winners of 2015 feature… DJS OF THE YEAR Sam Farsio, Jixo & Danz, James Locksmith.
As consistent as he was in demand in 2015, Sam Farsio stepped up and delivered in every set, playing deep, emotive but uplifting house and tech-house. Somehow combining full time work with near full time DJing (they must live on Espresso and Red Bull), Jixo & Danz dropped deep, tech-laced house science at every party worth going to last year (which was a lot). Closing out our selection is the versatile James Locksmith, who not only turned his hand to techno (Groove on the Grass), house (Night Vibes) and pretty much everything else (DUST), he was also involved in bringing Mr Scruff, Dam Funk and Kenny Dope to the region.
URBANS DJS OF THE YEAR Rone Jaxx, Dany Neville
A truly timeless DJ, Rone Jaxx constantly delivers, notably at his Tuesday night residency at 360 where he drops old and new school classics with consummate ease. And The Angry Monkey and Dany Neville might have had their differences in the past, but there are few better urban ambassadors for the region in the Radio 1 DJ and White Dubai resident.
NEW NIGHT OF THE YEAR Karak Beats Bold, experimental and with a dedicated following, they’ve brought something fresh and truly alternative to a packed party schedule.

BIGGEST LOSERS OF THE YEAR That choice has resulted in some half-filled venues, with clubbers split across a dozen or more parties each weekend night. Quality, not quantity, is still key.
CONCEPT OF THE YEAR We’re a firm believer that club concepts should be kept simple: good music + good venue. Stereo Arcade truly raised the bar with their action-packed venue (complete with a fully equipped arcade room) that brought the 80s and 90s back to life in style.

DEDICATED FANS OF THE YEAR Analog Roomers. No matter who the headliner, who the competition is that night, they’re there in force.
COMEBACK OF THE YEAR The Recipe. The hip hop trio took their art to the next level, with their first official single, a ludicrously good mixtape and some seriously strong live shows. 2016 should be their year.

LOCAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR Moe Turk, Abu Dhabi, Consoul Trainin Dubai. Prodigious – and hugely talented – producer Moe Turk has had a huge 2015, signing tracks to Toolroom, Armada and more, while Consoul Trainin has had work signed to Lou Lou Records, Prison Entertainment and more, while several of his nu-disco remixes went viral in style.
BAND OF THE YEAR Carl & The Reda Mafia, Hollaphonic. Funk-fried rock and roll from Carl & The Reda Mafia who took to their Bon Jovi warm up like true rock stars while Hollaphonic went from strength to strength with their house/EDM sound, booking several international gigs and getting big airplay from BBC Radio
ALBUM OF THE YEAR Ma’Ana Dubai
A strong compilation of the city’s house, techno and nu-disco talents that got picked up by Sony, with the 2nd installment set for release this February. Well done to Tobie Allen for getting the project off the ground and into stores across the world.

KZ Records had several tracks that breached the upper reaches of the Beatport Top 100, and gave a platform for local producers to get their music heard by the masses. And audio tonic continued their strong form, signing up big hitting artists like H.O.S.H for remix duties, with international ambassador Raxon spreading the musical word.

Back to the future New weekly club night Back2Basics launches at Level 41 on Thursday January 14 with Nick Warren before Bedrock signing Quivver takes over the following week.
Nick Warren, January 14 A DJ for almost 30 years, Warren is best for his work with Global Underground and as part of the progressive house duo Way Out West. The Bristol DJ was signed to Sony for 4 artist albums, while there’s a new album scheduled for release this year, alongside rumours that Way Out West could be making a live return this year. Until then, Nick Warren will be bringing decades of house music experience to kick-off Back2Basics’ season in style.
Quivver, January 21 Another product of the 90s house scene, Quivver AKA John Graham, featured 5 times in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll and has released music on Perfecto Records, John Digweed’s Bedrock and Toolroom, and was also a resident DJ at Twilo, the cult New York club at the start of the century. More recently, he toured as part of prog/breaks outfit Hybrid, while last year he released The Fever with Matt Lange on Deadmau5’s mau5trap label which did damage on dancefloors across the world. He’s not just a talented house music maker though – he’s created music for CSI:NY, and worked on the soundtracks for cult video games like Call of Duty, Transformers and Batman. Music News ROCK ON! Long-running Californian festival Coachella has managed to bring not one but two cult bands out of retirement to play their 2016 event. Indie-dance group LCD Soundsystem (pictured) have reformed and headline on Friday April 15 and 22 while the original Guns’n’Roses line up are back together (for now) and play the Saturday slots. EDM kingpin Calvin Harris closes out the festival.
TECHNICS RE-LAUNCHES THE 1200 TURNTABLE It’s time to start saving, or maybe start pestering Santa, as Technics have re-launched their cult 1200 turntable with the first limited edition run coming this summer, and a full launch at the end of the year. The new unit will have a set of high precision rotary positioning sensors and a micro-processor control system that will actively suppress vibrations. All this technology won’t come cheap, however, as the high end units are likely to retail upwards of AED10,000.

2015
Andy Buchan, Infusion Editor •New Order – Music Complete. A proper return to form for the Blue Monday crew (minus Peter Hook), with already classic tunes like ‘Tutti Frutti’ and ‘Plastic’ among some of the best music they’ve made. •Grimes – Art Angels. The 4th album from the Canadian was as willfully odd as it was brilliantly pop – think fizzy wine drunk Bjork crossed with helium-balloon vocals and you’re not far off. •Hudson Mohawk – Lantern. Properly experimental beats and pieces album that struck a chord with the mainstream, with high voltage melodies mixed with boom bap beats. Then again, you’d expect nothing more from the Warp and Yeezus producer. •Hot Chip – Why Make Sense. Opener ‘Huarache Lights’ signaled their intent: all freeform bass, live drum beats and nagging melodies. And ‘Need You Now’ was rinsed by every DJ with ears, a brilliant slice of forward thinking retro house.
•Chemical Brothers – Born In The Echoes. Not quite classic Chems, but tracks like ‘Go’ and the warped crescendo of ‘Reflexion’ were among some of the most played of the year.
Last year was a vintage year for music. So good in fact, that we couldn’t pin it all down ourselves so we asked some of our favourite DJs and promoters to pull together their Top 5 albums of the year Stephen Day, Infusion reviewer •Jamie XX - In Colour. Beautifully grown up album from the XX beats man that is way beyond his years, a true artist.
•Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool. I discovered them on the Mercury short list and I love the fact every song seems like it’s from a different album: great songs, great band.
•Ghostpoet - Shedding Skin. Challenging and sometimes difficult to get through but that’s the point of music in my mind, put in the effort and enjoy the reward.
•Courtney Barnet - Sometimes I Sit & Think & Sometimes I Just Sit. Possibly the best album title of the year and a great new talent that I first saw at Glastonbury.
•Noel Gallagher - Chasing Yesterday. Noel’s back: how can you not only not love his tunes but his cutting sense of humour in the press?
Lobito – Deep Crates •Kamasi Washington - The Epic. That’s right, Jazz. A return to true musicianship and cultural heritage, this album brings jazz to a whole new generation without watering down its essence. I’m so happy to see support for this artist and through his affiliation to the Brainfeeder camp its bringing real musicians to an audience it would never normally reach. •D’Angelo - Black Messiah. After a 14 year gap, D’Angelo released a modern masterpiece. The cultural references within this album would take a dissertation to unpick, but needless to say this LP reignites civil rights era discussions and pain from that ongoing struggle today. A very deep record. •Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly. An obvious choice but also necessary just because of the scope of the vision, this LP deserves to be acclaimed as much as it should be criticized but that’s the point. This is another culturally dense record that touches on some of the themes of D’Angelos release. Musically it finally brings concepts and musicians from the cutting edge brainfeeder and Flying Lotus school into the mainstream. •Action Bronson - Mr Wonderful. There’s no doubt Action Bronson has his own style and while he’s been reduced by some as the “white Ghostface,” he differs stylistically in many ways and this LP, which is a very weird long player to listen to start to finish, has some standout moments that will work their way into many discerning DJs set. •Local album of the year: The Recipe - Throwback To The Future Mixtape. The Recipe’s latest mixtape mixes classic and modern beats with their distinctive flow and lyrical talent. It’s great to see new energy in the group’s output and a clearer vision of how to push their sound,. There definitely seems to be a clear sonic direction and renewed maturity in their latest efforts and their ability to rock any crowd deserves more attention.

On The Record Soulful house outfit MustHaveSoul are back in business and have launched their own record label, with their first release out now. We caught up with one half of the outfit Simon Reid to find out what to expect in the coming months‌

The best thing about running your own label is… This is something that we’ve wanted to do for a long time after supporting so many DJs/producers and their music down the years. For us, the best thing about running a label instead of a party is being able to spread the word about music you truly believe in. The worst thing is… Finding up-and-coming talent. It’s not easy, especially from the Middle East. What does your label sound like? It should sound like a great night out. We’re strongly focused on bringing music you love to listen and dance too so whether you’re a DJ or dance fan, the sounds will make you want to dance, share and enjoy. How do you make yourself stand out? The music really should be the only thing that makes a label stand out from the crowd, that and a good promotion team! How does a smash hit happen? It depends how you class a smash hit. A piece of music doesn’t have to be played in the clubs and radio to be popular. For me, good music should keep you listening from the start until the end. How involved are you with UAE/Middle East producers, how can people get in touch with you? As a brand I think most DJs
and producers in the UAE who have been around for a while will have heard of us and know what we stand for. We’d love to work with local and international talent to deliver the very best musical product. Nowadays it’s not easy at all to make money from a label after all the costs that go into promoting and releasing tracks. MustHaveSoul isn’t about making money, it’s about giving artists a platform and promoting good music. Any money made will go to the artists and back in to the label. And what’s next for your label? Lots of hunting for new artists and more releases. We may even host a party at some point to let everyone know we’re back so keep a look out for that.

The Brazilian resident DJ at The Dek on 8 explains why he’d like to DJ in the 70s and why DJing is a lot like running… One thing you might not know about me is… I love politics and I hold a degree in international relations. My worst ever job was… As a civil servant. I could not handle such a strict routine and bureaucracy for so long. Boring! My favorite ever record is… Moby’s “Porcelain”.
DJing is much like… Running! You should never release the energy too fast and your main task is to build up the vibe to unleash power and the feeling of winning the race. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... It could be more music-oriented rather than money-oriented. What track could you drop in every set? Candi Staton – ‘Hallelujah Anyway’ (Larse Vocal). I can’t live without: I can always adapt. But a world without music would be extremely tedious! I know... Very predictable! My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Warming up for Buena Vista Social Club and being in the “Art For Freedom” project, developed by Madonna and Steven Klein. What is your guiltiest pleasure? To have an entire pot of Haagen Dazs after my sets while laying down on my sofa. Waiting for the sponsorship after this answer! If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I’m not a nostalgic person and nowadays there is a lot of music diversity to work with. But if I have to chose one decade, it would be the 70s: the rise of disco and sexual revolution expansion. Rarely could a dance movement fit so precisely within a decade. And I would like to know how I would fit in those flared trousers. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Basement Jaxx. Banging house tunes, an array of powered vocal singers wearing gorilla costumes, belly dancers and a trumpet player dressed as a crow. Sounds too much fun, doesn’t it?
