I’ve put on enough nights around the city to know how important artwork is. While flyers might be more digital than they used to be thanks to littering/flyering regulations, they’re still the calling card for your night, they should encapsulate your night, your ethos and your party on one side of A4 or A3. Which is why we’ve highlighted five parties in Dubai that have gone beyond the obvious for their flyers (half naked woman/artist + artist name) and put some effort into their design. Elsewhere, we have another action-packed magazine rammedfull of content including previews of Sandance, Sensation and the Illusionists, and all the news, reviews, party photos and gig listings you’ll need. South African Braai Day @ Emirates Golf Course
BBQing is big business in South Africa: you just had to check out the wannabe Chefs who rocked up to our Bring and Braai event with their own self contained kitchen tent for proof of that. There were plenty of amateur chefs there as well, taking advantage of the dozen braais at the back of the enclosure, while the rest of the 400 strong crowd got stuck into the entertainment including the two bars, the bouncy castle, the petting zoo, dancefloor and South African comedian. With a buzzing atmosphere from start to finish and the Savannah flowing freely, we’re already looking forward to this becoming an annual institution.

Plus Minus feat. Karmon @ Level 41
The Plus Minus crew might have found a new home at the Warehouse-like Level 41, but they brought every part of their raving spirit for their house-warming party. Busy from early for Haidz rock-solid warm up set, international guests &ME and Karmon respectively rocked the joint with melodic, deep and techy sets that pushed all the right buttons. And with bananas given out on the night, there was no problem sustaining the dancefloor energy right until the 3am close. Now a monthly affair at Level 41, we’ve heard that the Plus Minus team have another tag team lined up, including a live show from Stimming on October 23. See you there.
Lady Gaga @ Meydan
Despite the early September heat and humidity, Lady Gaga – and her dedicated followers of Little Monsters in the crowd – was in fine form as she kicked off her latest world tour. Appearing on stage an hour late at 10.45pm, she quickly won over the Dubai crowd with an emotional, heartfelt introduction including a few words of Arabic. And, conscious about the UAE customs, her costumes had been dialed down a notch. With a voice that would put most pop stars to shame, and showcasing her musical ability by playing guitar and piano during the show, she rattled through her big hits like ‘Applause’ and ‘Poker Face,’ with the hot and sweaty crowd getting fully into the mood. Apart from losing a few litres of water through sweat, and the long, narrow layout which reduced visibility, this was an early highlight of the concert season, and a credit to Gaga’s star power.

You know the party season has properly kicked off when the boat and yacht parties sail into action, and the bi-weekly Never Get Out The Boat tech-house session remains one of favourites after 4 years. This season, boat (or should that be beat) captain Matthew Charles has introduced a Back-to-Back format, with audio tonic guests Mr Mr and Rod Lee setting the tone for the clued up crowd before Sammy Adami and Matt Charles closed proceedings infront of a full dancefloor. This is a place for true lovers of dance music, pretension free and full of style, love and smiles: everyone is welcome as long as you leave your attitude at the dock and have it on the top deck. – Stephen Day

Loca Sunset Brunch @ O’cacti
Late brunches are the new Friday standard it seems, and a new favourite is Pier 7’s Loca Sunset Brunch at O’Cacti. Starting at 2pm, it gives party goers that much needed recovery time from the night before. Its mouth watering a la carte style menu including Fajitas, Burritos, Nachos, Steaks and more, offered great tasting, freshly prepared Mexican Cuisine and free flowing Cervezas & Cocktails that kept us going until the 6pm Happy Hour. To the back drop of the Marina, DJ Taya Cruz dropped a blend of Deep & Commercial House alongside Latino Band, Latin Grace that had Brunchers on the dance floor and working off their overindulgence as the sun went down. Loosen those belt buckles Gringos as this is happening every Friday.
Globalfunk vs Bassworx: dBridge & SP:MC @ Casa Latina
Casa Latina was at capacity by midnight as dBridge made his Dubai debut for the first ever Globalfunk vs Bassworx. With an amped up sound system and an undercard that boasted a who’s who of the local drum and bass scene, it seemed like all the local DnB heads had crawled out of the woodwork for this event. dBridge played an unconventional set that mixed Drum and Bass, Jungle, Drumstep (Autonomic) and other genres beyond the realms of classification. The self professed connoisseur of musical imperfections, backed by SP:MC on the mic had an enthusiastic crowd jumping around the venue as he dropped a set heavily laden with newly produced material. The reception drawn by his 2hr journey felt like a game changer. For a region that likes to dance to the sound of Old School D’n’B, it’s proof there is a market for newer styles to push through. Props go out to Globalfunk’s Somalie & Mach4 who started off proceedings and Bassworx residents Woodle & JAB, accompanied by an MC Battle between Olly Wood & JD Odyssey, who ended the night with an all out, bass fuelled, assault that “could’ve turned Hari Krishna into a bad boy.” Quite.

Bet big on the Bingo Players
Dutch EDM DJ and producer Maarten Hoogstraten AKA Bingo Players is making his Middle East debut at Nasimi on Thursday October 9. Best known for big hits like ‘Cry (Just A Little Bit)’ and ‘Rattle,’ they were ranked 52nd in last year’s DJ Mag Top 100 DJ poll. Originally a duo, Maarten carried on making music after his partner Paul Bäumer sadly passed away. Cielo re-open with Robin Schulz
The stunning Creek-side bar and lounge Cielo Sky Lounge is open for business after the summer break, and they’re bringing down German DJ Robin Schulz on Thursday October 9. He’s a man in form, having had a No.1 iTunes hit in 27 countries with his remix of Lilly Wood and The Prick’s ‘Prayer In C’ while it was also the most Shazamed track in the world at one point.

Clubbing behemoth BMIU returns to action for the season, with a freshly tweaked soundsystem and a monster line up for October. Looking Forward Laughter Factory
The longest-running comedy show in the region returns for its monthly installment of rib ticklers with Ian Coppinger, Prince Abdi and Stuart Goldsmith in charge of the funnies. Teenage Ahead of his debut Middle East gig at Sensation on October 31, we take a look at Martin Garrix’s spectacular rise to fame… Cast your mind back to when you were 18 (if your memory will stretch that far). It was probably a blur of Clearasil, exams, chasing girls and life opening up ahead of you, wondering just what you’re going to do with your time on planet earth. That scenario has never applied to 18 year old Dutch teenage sensation Martin Garrix. His weekends revolve
around playing dirty club bangers to thousands of people, hanging out with the DJ elite like Tiesto, Guetta and Afrojack and having a global Number 1 hit with ‘Animals.’ Yeah, that’s pretty cool. His eureka moment came in 2004, when he watched his soon to be mentor Tiesto in action. "I had never been interested in electronic music," he admits. "Then, I saw Tiësto playing the Olympics on television. I hadn't heard that music before. My mom played classical piano, and my dad and I played guitar. It was the first time I witnessed the beats, tempo, and vibe electronic music gives you. From that point, I was hooked. I started listening to trance, and I slowly moved to house. I instantly began saving up money for my first DJ setup." Gigs for friends, family and weddings followed, but his first big break was only
Kicks! just around the corner. Aged just 13 – yup, you read that right – he made his club debut in Amsterdam, and a few years later, his production career was up and sprinting. A bootleg of Enrique Iglesias’s ‘Tonight’ effectively broke the internet, setting the blogosphere alight with Tweets, shares and downloads. Ground-up support grew quickly, so much so that iconic dance label ‘Spinnin Records’ offered him his first official release, while the super credible Joris Voorn released his ‘Error 404’ EP on his label.
Garrix then went on to create official remixes for Christina Aguilera and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike & Sander Van Doorn. Impressive enough for a man double his years, but let’s not forget this is a Dutch boy who’s nearer to nappies than he is to a mid-life crisis. 2013 really saw him break records and set himself up as a global superstar. His club conquering hit ‘Animals’ rampaged to the Number 1 spot on Beatport where it stayed for 4 weeks, and remains one of the site’s biggest sellers over its decade long history. In America alone, it sold over a million copies, helping make him a poster child and figurehead for the exploding EDM scene, where he went on to play huge festivals like Ultra and Coachella. "I've had that melody since I was 12," he smiles when asked about ‘Animals’. "It stuck in my head, and I wanted to do something with it for so long. The drop is very different. It feels like you're in the jungle. It's just a blast of energy." Now, aged 18, he’s the main attraction for Sensation’s first ever outdoor event, and poised to play infront of 15,000 people at Meydan on October 31. While he might call fellow DJs on the night like Roger Sanchez, AN21 and Max Vangelli mates, he often brings his childhood friends on tour with him so he
can catch up, and help keep himself grounded. And while he might not be able to enjoy a cold beer on the night due to the 21 year old licensing laws, rest assured that when Martin Garrix takes over the decks from house star Roger Sanchez, he will be giving it his all on stage, and living it up for all wannabe 18 year olds in the crowd.

Which other artwork do you admire? I like the Analog Room guys here in UAE plus the Superheroes artwork (done by Clare again). In Europe Fabric always did some cool stuff, as did The End when it was open.

And how long did it take from original vision to the final product? I think it was over a period of about 2-3 weeks, so a pretty quick turnaround to be honest.

Our artwork has always been very artistically driven, when you see it you stop and look to study it, it draws you in I guess.
And any problems faced doing it, or hurdles you had to overcome/ creative differences? Always if's, when you are not a designer you always have this picture about what you think would look cool, but naturally wouldn't even know where to start and a lot of the time, it's hard to describe to a designer exactly what you want. Ultimately you have to leave that to them as they are the experts, making ideas come to life through design is an art after all.

I briefed her on the concept and brand values, then Clare worked her magic and hit it perfectly.

And what are you trying to convey with it? I wanted to create a brand that was totally unique, fun, playful and ultimately accessible: these are the values of Superheroes as an event. Which other artwork do you admire? I love the work of Dutch artist Parra. He uses highly saturated colours and has a really funky weird vibe. His stuff was a big influence to us branding Superheroes. In terms of club art, We Love Space Sundays, their branding is very playful and totally unique. I prefer artwork for events that is not overly ‘cool’.
And how long did it take from original vision to the final product? Clare and I worked on the overall branding for a few weeks, trying different ideas and styles until we found something that we were happy with. The logo is very strong and I think yellow is the ideal colour to represent the brand. I decided I wanted a series of creatures to feature on the art each month, they would create a series over the course of the year. Each flyer/poster is an individual unique piece of art in its own right. I plan to remove the text and use them as such at the end of the year for a display.

Who designed your artwork? Deian Markov, Gareth Davies (touch ups), Andreas Graf (Season I). And what are you trying to convey with it? A musical event which has depth in thought, and something that is different from the rest of the industry flyers which usually have a safe, clean, colourful, and commercial appeal. Which other artwork do you admire? Since promoters have to cooperate with brand guidelines of their venues, there is lack of artwork for events which meets high international standards. Other people's artwork we support in Dubai are Clique @ 360, Audiotonic, Blue Marlin,
Electric Days, Analog Room, Machu Warriors, and Plus Minus Sessions. And how long did it take from original vision to the final product? It usually takes 1-3 days to feel really comfortable with a concept, but there are tweaks from first day of promotion to the day of the event. any problems faced doing it, or hurdles you had to overcome/ creative differences? Yes there are always roadblocks. With design there are limitations when it comes to technical know-how and expressing your imagination. That’s why it is good to collaborate with other designers and share thoughts, and use the experience of others to express your imagination if you face limitation in your skills. The end product is usually much better when you collaborate with one or two designers.

Our Sunny Vibe Up logo was initially designed by an Oxford based designer called Autumn Neagle and she also designed the early retro looking flyers for SVU and some other Deep Crates events. More recent SVU flyers were designed by Dubai based Kaspar Walker. Other than being a great alcoholic, DJ and generally top Bristolian, the hugely talented Kaspar is also responsible for designing the artwork of the annual Boomtown festival in the UK. And what are you trying to convey with it? SVU is a daytime, happygo-lucky, accessible event with on-point music and our flyer design and logo needed to strongly convey this fun vibe of the event to our crowd. I was strongly inspired by reggae-dancehall music record sleeves that came out in the late 1970s and 1980s (eg Tony McDermott) which usually featured hand-drawn cartoon figures dancing and having a good time to Reggae music.
And how long did it take from original vision to the final product? Easily 3 months. any problems faced doing it, or hurdles you had to overcome/ creative differences? Finding the right designer was the hardest thing. We tried out many designers and while most of them were good, only Kaspar really got the concept and was technically competent enough to execute it. We never had many creative differences and I think it’s because we both knew what we were trying to achieve.

What are you trying to convey with it? We wanted to have a continuation of the theme from last season's artwork, which was all designed by Gyula Deak from quint. He came up with this amazing B&W concept that was vaguely creepy and gothic, and heavily featured people wearing random animal
masks. There's no obvious connection to the music we play, but we like that. With a new season and new designer, we wanted to inject some colour, but keep using the people in animal masks - I guess because they look like they're off to a slightly weird but fun party, and that's how we hope people feel about BHP. How long did it take from original vision to final product? I found the image online, and then Salina and I banged it out in an afternoon at home.

Welcome back to the city, you've been here before – what nights stand out for you? Thank you! I love coming to Dubai, what a city. House of Afrika is going off right now, also anything at 360 or Blue Marlin. Anything that the Smokingroove boys are spinning at, I'm there! You're an Ibiza favourite with residencies at Space and Ushuaia and previously at Pacha, how did you climb the ladder to get where you are? You're a versatile DJ and are playing our House of Afrika night – what's your favourite sort of set? Anytime I can use my skills and play funky music – that’s when I really get into it. All that matters is if the crowd are down to dance and shake their asses to cool music. Super looking forward to playing the House of Afrika night. You're also a very technical DJ – how good do you have to be in today's DJ scene to make it? And what are your favourite tricks to do when you're playing out?
You don't have to be very good to make it unfortunately, if you have a strong social media presence then anything can happen. The real test is if you have the ability to impress and turn heads. That’s what I specialise in - making people know the difference between a DJ and a real DJ. I do this for the art of it all. I’m always learning techniques of the turntablist world and incorporating it into my sets. I’m a technological nerd when it comes to learning the new equipment. Tricks wise, nothing beats turntablism and juggling. What impresses you as a DJ, and who have you seen or heard recently that made you think you need to up your game? If you can make people jump and shout to hot music without going down the commercial road. There aren't that many DJs these days who can truly impress me. Legends like Jazzy Jeff and Dj Revolution have always got me taking notes. Hot Djs are never satisfied, there are always new things to learn.

Both members of EofS were in successful indie bands before. Luke Steele was in indie rockers The Sleepy Jackson, while Nick Littlemore is still a member of Pnau, the electronic duo who recently collaborated with Elton John for an album. They dream big. They’ve planned a film version of Ice on the Dune, their second album, but need a lot of money before it goes into production. Littlemore said: ‘We've written a treatment for [a film] but I guess we're just waiting for that person with a sackful of money to come along and pay for it. We hope there'll be a film somewhere down the road and a Vegas-style show. We want to do it properly with animals and everything. We've always wanted elephants and tigers.’

The duo scrapped over 100 tunes in the process of creating their self-titled debut album, and produced every track on their own, including smash single ‘We Are The People.’ But the process caused some friction, with Nick leaving the band to work on other projects for a year. The band believe in bigger is better when it comes to live shows, as they seek to cross ‘theatre with dance, imagery and art.’ There are three members in the live show, but they’re bolstered by outlandish costumes, dancers and madcap visuals. And according to Luke, they have an ‘imagineering team’. Right then. And, if pressed, they’d say their music was like ‘Rothko’s early work – the honeyed yellow and the pinks, and the subtleties within them. We try to paint with emotion.’

Music News... Pioneer DJ sold
It’s been rumoured for a while, but a private equity firm in the United States has bought Pioneer’s DJ equipment sector for the princely sum of $551 million. Pioneer will continue to hold a 14.95 voting stake, and the deal is expected to be confirmed in March 2015. The news follows the release of their brand new vinyl turntable. A joint statement between the equity firm KKR and Pioneer promised they would ‘jointly leverage their respective business resources, brand power, and technological capability”.
MUSIC BITES ‘Oh’ Jay Z is fighting a lawsuit over his use of the word ‘oh’ in his 2009 hit, ‘Run This Town.’ Record label TufAmerica own the rights to Eddie Bo’s 1969 funk track ‘Hook And Sling – Part 1’ which they argue Jay-Z sampled, and are seeking back-royalties and damages.

It seems U2 literally can’t give their music away these days. After being signed up to help launch Apple’s new iPhone 6 and give their album away for free to iTunes subscribers, thousands complained after they found no way to delete the album, Songs of Innocence, from their devices. In fact, the search ‘how to delete U2’ was the most searched on Google the day after the launch, which had apparently cost Apple an eye-watering $100 million. If you’ve heard Lorde, The Weekend or any of the stripped back, sultry minimal RnB crew that are dominating the airwaves at the moment, then you’ll know what to expect from Banks’ debut album. The production is glossy perfection, like a catwalk model walking in slo-mo. Then again, with blog-hyped producers like Shlomo, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Lil Silva on board, you’d expect nothing else. The combination of soaring vocals, rib-cage rattling snares and snatches of downtempo melody work on tracks like ‘Alibi’ and the quite brilliant ‘Waiting Game,’ which drips in love, lust and heartache, while a seismic bassline rumbles beneath. All too often though, the album trickles into the same musical dead end, as the depressive, dark lyrics, sparse backing tracks and thunderous bass segue into a homogenous whole (and at 60 minutes, this isn’t a short album). A lift in tempo, or a shift in dynamic would have brought more light and life to Goddess’s dark shadows, but if you’re looking for a headphonefriendly album to wallow in, this is it.

Follow up albums are never easy, even more so when one of your founding members leaves citing personal reasons. But Mercury Music Prize winners Alt-J have taken it all in their mathrock stride, and created a sophomore album that builds on An Awesome Waves melodic footprint. This Is All Yours revolves around gentle strings, padding rhythms and delicate, egg-thin harmonies. But for every mellow moment, there are plenty of soft/loud dynamics, stabbing bass frenzies and clever stop/start percussion. Tracks like ‘Nara,’ ‘Every Other Freckle’ and their poppiest moment yet – ‘Left Hand Free’ – simmer with that dovetailing mix of restrained melody and kinetic momentum, while haunting, almost glacial episodes like ‘Choice Kingdon’ and ‘Pusher’ allow the album even more breathing space. Like similar bands Yeasayer and Sigur Ros, it’s best to sit back and let the album engulf you.

Dubai club to launch drone strike bar service
Club Air, Dubai’s latest open-air venue, has announced that it’s going to start operating a VVIP drone bar service from the start of this year. The al fresco venue is launching the drone attack in a bid to cut down on accidental Champagne spillage. Jessica Heirhead said ‘Our customers love spraying their magnums of Cristal, obviously, but get very irate when some ignorant waiter spills a drop, so we’ve looked to fully eliminate that by introducing the airborne drones which we guarantee won’t rain down a Champagne storm.’ But the move has drawn criticism from Middle East patrons, who have claimed that by playing an air raid siren every time a Jeraboam is sold and unleashing the drone strike they’ll send clubbers scurrying for cover. Writing on Facebook, Mohammad Misile was appalled. ‘I’m appalled,” he said. Club Air could not be reached for comment.

eat sleep rave repeat Onshore Social Our food foraging restaurant reviewer Stephen heads to 0 Gravity’s latest launch, their highend, later afternoon Friday brunch
Love it or hate it (I’m in the latter camp), brunch is an institution in this city. So, it has to be something different to get me out on a Friday afternoon, and the pull of a late brunch (3-6pm), a mix of platters and cocktail jugs at your table was lure enough. While the beach-side 0 Gravity has been up and running for some time, this afternoon session is their first ever brunch. We were seated promptly upstairs (via a timely cucumber laden G&T offered midway) at a nice big table overlooking the bar below. The whole place is bright, airy and very spacious with fantastic views of the beach and JBR skyline. Our waiter Bek introduced himself and the concept: this isn’t your
usual brunch scrum, this is a much more civilised affair. There are 4 large courses each made up of a handful of distinct dishes and themes, all served at the table and accompanied by either Champagne (666 AED) or a mixture of wines and large glass jars full of house cocktails (444 AED), a bit like the ones you get fruit juice from at a hotel buffet breakfast. This is a great idea and much appreciated as the day moved on as we can help ourselves when needs must. The lazy afternoon kicked off nicely with resident David Craig behind the decks and a live saxophonist wandering around adding to the laid back vibe as this brunch doesn’t start until 3pm. At times, the music was perhaps
a tad too loud as we had to raise our voices to talk but maybe it’s because we were sat below some speakers, or I’m just getting old. The first course arrived on a giant tray and included anti pasti, cold cuts, salad nicioise, caprese and a quinoa salad. Each dish is perfectly presented and very fresh: the salad leaves crunch, the grilled Aubergine and Courgette are packed full of flavour and the buffalo mozzarella is creamy and light. Our glasses charged, we were asked if we would like to move on to the next course or repeat the first. This is a nice touch as you might prefer to stay on one of the courses only for the day or just repeat ones you really liked. We were
next greeted by a sumptuous display of predominantly Asian influenced bites, some sushi, sashimi, dim sum baskets along with smoky seafood bisque accompanied with a silky smooth rouille atop crispy toast. A quick top up of boozy watermelon lemonade and a much deserved break, and we were ready for the main event. Bek almost struggled to carry over the largest portion I’ve ever seen of lobster tail, shrimp, scallop on one plate, roast chicken, steak, sausage and lamb chops on another, all of it perfectly cooked, succulent and easy to eat. All this plus a Thai Green curry with the hottest (and tastiest green sambal) on the side. At this point I think we would have exploded if it wasn’t for the thought of something sweet
and sticky to end on. We weren’t disappointed with the large offering full of little pots of yummy, some chocolate, some cream and a delightfully light Baked Alaska taking center stage. If you still have room, check out the cheese station and especially the ice cream, as it was some of the tastiest I’ve eaten in Dubai. The official brunch time over at 6pm, we causally retired downstairs to the tables set out on the grass and beach for a final few drinks and a shisha, the perfect way to end as the sun started to set and the music picked up a gear well into the night. I’m reluctant to tell you how much fun we had as I don’t want to return and find it full of brunch veterans but I can’t help myself when I expel my enthusiasm for a venue that deserves some attention. Wasted DJs The Monkey, while mid-tree top swing the other week, had a sudden realization. Ever wondered why DJs and agents charge double to come out to the Middle East? Not only do they run the risk of being banged up (Grooverider), they won’t sell any more records on the back of it, and clubs – and clubbers – aren’t as clued up as in Europe, nor as fired up. A case very much proved recently. A huge, huge DJ was booked to play in the UAE, but just 90 minutes into his headline set, he was swiftly booted off so that the residents could do their thang. And that thang was car-crash EDM and RnB. Fair enough, play trash like any Tom, Dick or David (Guetta) but why bother to book an ultra cool DJ in the first place just so you could throw them off? And you wonder why DJs and their agents add another 0 to the price when they see Dubai...
