MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE GUIDE

A Note From The Editor

Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Partner: Charl Chaka charlchaka@infusion.ae Editor: Charl Chaka Contributing Editor: Laura McCrum

Gadzooks there’s a shed load going on this fortnight and this little scene cat is well prepared to sacrifice her sleep in purrrsuit of all the musical good times and event extravaganza I can manage on a dose of cat nip. Boy George, Tiger CO-LAB, LTJ Bukem, Hector Couto, Krafty Kuts, World Boxing Championships, Break-dancing championships, music releases and Infusion Magazine Season Closing party are just a few of events to behold, but to be sure you don’t miss a thing, pour through this issue for a comprehensive guide to ‘how to not sleep for a fortnight’. But who needs sleep with summer fast approaching? Plenty time to recover and reminisce while swinging on a hammock and suppin freshly cracked coconut milk after the season ends. But the fat lady hasn’t sung yet and oasis in the desert Dubai has a few more weeks to give. Laura McCrum

BACK Retrospective on what’s been happening in our world.

Looking Back

What we did Vinny da Vinci at House of Africa Diminutive but titanic would be our description of Vinnie da Vinci. Holding the rep as one of South Africa’s house masters Vinnie did not disappoint. He kept the dance floor full and bubbling with tune after tune of happiness. Well all except a cover version of Gangnam style that, all be it, beautifully sung and well produced you cannot change the fact that it is Gangnam style – a turd that can’t be polished. All aside the vibe was so good we couldn’t get people to leave causing a near riot with the security at the end. House of Africa is fast becoming the heartbeat of Dubai proving the old African proverb, ‘The sweetest music and dance always comes from home’

Yard Rock, Demarco @ Chi Lounge When you think Jamaican Dancehall one tends to think, dutty whine and grinding nemo. Hot nights, booty popping beats and a whole lot of sweating. This was what Demarco delivered but sadly not a huge turn out for the event and a few in attendance weren’t down with the vibe. Regardless less people means more room for dancing and Demarco kept them bouncing.

Looking Back Mighty Mouse @ Inhale, Tamanya Terrace

An early start kicking off with Liminal Roots dropping the sunset beats. Rayner & Wisqo picked up the pace with some bouncy deep house warm up set before Mighty Mouse took over for the headline set. It was a great vibe with plenty of bad dancing and happy faces. As expected from Mighty Mouse a great eclectic mix including his amazing Prince rework of controversy and his new single with Du Tonic Surging Memories. Chris Rayner closed out the evening for the last half an hour dropping some classics for the remaining crowd.

Rock Fest @ Dubai world trade center

We ended up having and unexpectedly good night at Rock Fest. We had been told to catch Malmsteen and the recommendation was good as he smashed it out on the guitars. Epica and Dark Tranquility delivered brilliant sets. There is something about massive stadium rock type events that has you sucked up with all the energy and atmosphere, rocker or not. The bands have a dedicated underground cult following. Everyone in attendance was there in support, which created such a positive vibe. There was one little rocker who stole the show. An 8 year old kid by the name of Jordan. He was caught on the big screens head banging and feeling every bit of the music. Good show Rock Fest pretty epic event.

Looking Back

Say What HRH Betty’s Photobomb Jest

HRH Queen Elizabeth II gave proof to her famed sense of humour by ‘Photobombing’ a live news broadcast during a recent visit to BBC Broadcasting House. On an official visit to open the revamped studios, ‘Betty’ waved and smiled as she popped up behind newsreaders Julian Worricker and Sophie Long. The surreal moment was unplanned as she was due to be in another part of the BBC during the broadcast. Later when chatting to The Script singer Danny O’Donoghue, HRH joked ‘Don’t forget your wellies’ in reference to his forthcoming gig at Glastonbury this summer. Antithesis to the Duke of Edinburgh’s repeated offensive sexist and racist public gaffs – Queen B proved there is life in the old gal yet.

Short and tweet Sylvester Stallone “Have you ever talked to your muscles? As you bring up the dumbbells, say ‘Grow! It’s what I call ‘body dialogue...’” Britney Spears “I’ve never really wanted to go to Japan. Simply because I don’t like eating fish. And I know that’s very popular out there in Africa.”

Age aint nothing but a number Proving that you are never too old to try something new Dorothy Custer celebrated her 102nd birthday by base-jumping off the Perrine Bridge in Idaho, America. Last year for her 101st birthday she tried zip-lining for the first time and has now got the extreme sports bug. Not to be deterred from trying new things her spirit of adventure and zest for life drives her adventures. When asked her secret she replied, ‘I never thought about age I just went on living’. We crown you Infusion Magazines Inspirational person Issue 202.

infusion magical guide of mystery Fancy yourself as a magician? Well here are a couple of bar-room tomfooleries that you can use to entertain your mates… or fleece them for cash… Make Money Magic Trick

You will need: • A Match Box • 20 Dirham • Someone who can’t count This is less of a magic trick and more of a bar con! Take out your 20 Dirham and match box and ask your mark if they’d like to see a trick. Fold up the 20 Dirham and put it in the matchbox. Then ask them if they also have 20 Dirham. Ask them to fold it up and tuck it into the matchbox. Close the box and if you wish mumble some magical woohaa and give a jiggery shake. Next offer to sell the matchbox back to them for 30 Dirham. If they wish they can check to make sure the money is still inside. Now congratulate them on their win and act like the trick didn’t work! The truth is you’ve just made 10 Dirham as they’ve forked our 50 Dirham’s for a box with 40 Dirham’s in it!

Magical Statical Cigarette trick

Lay a cigarette on a table and then explain to the people around the table about the art of static electricity. Feel free to exaggerate and use terms like ‘electrical generative charge field’ and ‘magnetic moon reflective static’ Start rubbing your hands together. Rub them against various items of clothing on your person. Mumble a few magical satical words like “staticus elecricus” Next place your hands on either side of the cigarette, use magical finger gesturing and draw your hand to one side. The cigarette will magically follow your hand. Your audience will faint in amazement… The secret: As you draw your hand away from the cigarette gently blow onto one side of the cigarette. You must make sure the table is dry so that the cigarette will roll in the direction of your magical statical fingers! As Paul Daniels would say “You’re going to like this – not a lot - but you’ll like it!”

Kut The Kraft Krafty Kuts, man on a mission and heavy bass banger, will be breaking beats at Cirque Le Soir Loves Break Beats Boutique on June 25th. We caught up with him fresh from dentist hell to talk music, getting lucky and catching bugs in your teeth!

For those who don’t know, who is Krafty Kuts? A DJ producer from Brighton on a mission to bring the break to the beat My music style is‌? Funky bass heavy bangers!! How did your journey into music begin? I used to be a break-dancer a few years back then one day I started playing the music for all the other dancers in the crew. I soon became obsessed with funky music

and entered a DJ competition and the rest is history. What or who inspires you? Music is my biggest inspiration. I listened to Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop & Ska at an early age and soon discovered that the emotions, drive and desire I had while listening to this inspired me to want to DJ & write my own music. Certain Artists & DJ’s inspire me such as Jazzy Jeff, Fatboy Slim, James Brown, Kool & The Gang (early years 69-74), George Clinton & Parliament oh the list is endless. Music is my biggest motivator.

degrees and the lights from the stage were attracting a large amount of insects. After a while it was like Perth’s wildlife were attacking us on stage. Getting in our clothes, mouths, on the turntables flying all over us … there were thousands everywhere it was insane … like a scene out of I’m a celebrity get my out of here. What’s it like making music for adverts (Coca Cola) and Playstation games as opposed to dance floors? That was a rare slice of luck where they heard one of my tracks I wrote with ED Solo for the FA Premiership Football season. To be honest it is all potluck, they simply choose tracks that work for their games. I would love to work on a movie score or video game but for now I am concentrating my efforts on phat club tunes.

You won “best DJ” three years in a row plus Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat award. You must be proud? Very proud indeed, it is always amazing to receive awards, especially for all the hard work and dedication I have put in over the years. I feel that I have chosen the right career path and the best is still to come but the awards are simply a bonus as my purpose and goals are to entertain and give people exactly what they are looking for… Those are my real rewards!!!

What’s next for Krafty Kuts? I run a record label called Instant Vibes and have loads of amazing artists about to release. More Krafty Kuts collaborations. Tours of the USA, Canada, Asia, Oz, Nz & Europe and stax of Festivals for this year, so it’s non stop.

Most weird and or freaky experience as a DJ? Myself & A.Skillz were dj-ing at a Festival in Perth. It was 40

Thank you for your time Krafty – especially following dentist trauma! Look forward to seeing you on June 25th.

Released on June 24th and with a cheeky wee remix by SmokinGroove, Beautiful Blue Boombox has got a little bit of everything we like. A nod to the old school for this 5th release from Infusion. Album Reviews... Wehbba – Square Two House, Techo, Indie-Dance



I www.djwehbba.com/

House music, more than ever, is a global concern. Sure there are the bastions of the beat like the UK, Germany and Spain, but increasingly house music producers – and some of the best clubs in the world – are located in more exotic climes. And hailing from Sau Paolo is Wehbba, a recent visitor for audio tonic’s deep house sessions. If you were there, you’d have heard his mellifluous, cosmic take on deep house, with dovetailing harmonies and crunchy beats to the fore. And his second album for Christian Smith’s Tronic label is more of the same, as warm, analogue funk meets techy, deep house beats. ‘Whatever’ is a more modern take on Moby’s ‘Go’, while album opener – and hit single – ‘Glider’ is propulsive house at its best. There are experimental vibes on the album as well: ‘Clockwork’ is a stabby, disjointed flurry of broken beats, while ‘Home’ could be the dub version of a Phoenix track, taking things into indie-dance territory. Fresh and assured, Square Two is yet more proof that the world is operating under one groove.



How you approach dance music is vital. You could go at it from 2ManyDJs point of view and treat beats like they’re a pick and mix selection, or you could take the purist point of view like Richie Hawtin. The barely out of their teens brother-brother team of Disclosure have done something else entirely: by ignoring dance music past and present (they’ve only been making electronic music for a couple of years), they’ve created a timeless album that has house, garage and classic warehouse vibes. And, impressively, it’s the perfect snapshot of all that is good about the house music scene at the moment. Like Daft Punk they’ve used a host of guests to bring their ideas to life, but unlike Daft Punk, these ideas aren’t lost in a sea of mediocrity as Jessie Ware, Eliza Doolittle, AlunaGeorge and more give their club jams a pop sheen. The album’s key lies in its simplicity: opener ‘When A Fire Starts To Burn’ is simply crisp hats, a rolling and evolving 303 bassline plus a hip hop sample. But together, it’s dancefloor dynamite. And it’s a theme that’s maintained as top-notch production and simple hooks are the key stones to their debut album, with lead singles ‘Latch’ and ‘You And Me’ the most effective. Ignorance is bliss in Disclosure’s case, and long may it continue… Andy Buchan

Killing

Cuts softly We caught up with DJ Cut Killer in the vaudeville and cabaret, Cirque de Soir. Effortless turntable mastery coupled with a smile of confident delight, he toyed with the Beatnuts and Sugar Hill Gang cutting them up like only a killer could. A career of hard work and drive that states why this man is France’s No.1 Export in Hip Hop. For those who don’t know, who is Cut Killer? I am a Moroccan guy living in France. I am 42. I am a DJ, Producer, Radio Presenter, Turntablist, film and TV soundtrack producer… Just a man who loves working with art and music.

How did you first get into music? My father had many vinyls that I used to listen to over and over. At 8 years old I took my first steps into Hip Hop. We were living near a club called Global where we would hear Temple of Hip Hop, Public

Enemy, DJ Dynasty blasting, we had our first crew IZB – Incredible Zulu B-Boys. By 16 I started to DJ – I loved the music, the message, everything. I started working after school to buy vinyl. We made a lot of trips to New York; as for me in the 80’s and 90’s this was the Mecca of Hip Hop. I had learned how to make the cuts then I was invited to host my first show on Radio Nova.

gonna be crazy’. People were dancing in the movie theatre!

What is your proudest moment? In New York I met and became friends with people like Funkmaster Flex and P Diddy. Soon after 9/11 we all sat down and wanted to do something. We organised a gig in Marakesh bringing together Muslims and Christians through Hip Hop. I was so special.

What is next for Cut Killer? A lot of things! I have 160 gigs a year. Movie soundtracks. Co-producing, ‘MTV Shake Some Booty’. New artists. Screen plays but at the end I am still a DJ.

You featured in and wrote the soundtrack for the movie La Haine. Did you realise the impact of the film? No not at all. Mathieu Kassovitz asked me to do something special. The social commentary was strong so the music was important. We discussed the scene and the decided to mix something popular and something from France. I chose KRS ONE and Edith Piath. We shot in 2 days. I didn’t realsie until I saw the movie. I said ‘oh shit- this is

Tell us one thing people may not know about you? I have a daughter - 7 years old. But also I love going to museums. Photography exhibitions. I am inspired by visual art. Finish this sentence, “Music is….” My life

Cut Killer revealed more stories about working with De La Soul, MC Solaar, Tribe and a run in with the FBI! For the full interview go to: http://www.infusion.ae

DJ Booth: DJ Venus

A woman of Substance and musical credibility is our DJ Booth guest this fortnight. Venus has a bio that features every top club on the London scene before striding it internationally to Du-finity and beyond. Her passion for music and mixing is evident. Honed on the underground club and radio scene she sure can hold her own in a game of musical trivial pursuits. Her versatility sets her apart and she represents what a true DJ should be‌ on point.

One thing you might not know about me is… I am a woman, and I am wise…I am a wise woman! Being a woman in a predominantly male industry is like… Entering into a teenager boy’s bedroom... nerdy, technical, bit intimidating, annoying, yet curiously interesting... then realizing the power of the feminine... not that I use it. My worst ever job was… Potato picking… lasted 1 day in the field with no water or food… I was 16. My favourite ever record is… Many of them... ‘Ever’ is tough... but if I had to listen to one last tune before I die then it would be probably something to make me laugh like Karl Pilkington’s “I could eat a knob at night”. DJing is much like … (depending on the environment) it can be like... “Dancin’ around on the decks playing rowdy hip hop with friends at a party” or “ a deeply contemplative experience whilst creating a beautiful musically scenic backdrop of ecstasy to listeners, sipping cocktails, watching the sunset and snacking on sushi”. So the variety and spectrum is fun… and endless. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… Moving in the right direction! Need a few more bass bins dotted around the city and a few pirate stations. I’m really proud of… Not being a model and still being able to DJ. If I could change one thing about anything it would be… The radio stations worldwide and the shocking load of commercial tripe they play and feed to the kids like mind control programs. I can’t live without… My laptop? My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... learning to DJ straight, I’m always better when I’m ‘merry’… a bit like when I play pool, you think your unstoppable. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… late 70’s/ early 80’s in New York. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… Ricky Lyte aka Ricardo Da Force. You can catch Venus at her residencies: Barasti for some beach living and QD’s for some chill chic.

Weird News... Scent of a Zombie

We do love a good Zombie story here at Infusion HQ. From the people who brought you scent of Play Doh, Clean Windows and Holy Water, Demeter have a new line of fragrances that are said to mask your human scent leaving you free to leisurely stroll through your next zombie apocalypse. ‘Guaranteed’ to ‘make the dead simply pass by without offending.’ This scent carries deep tones of moss, mildew and mushrooms! Smelling like something died up your own ass was never on our Zombie Apocalypse survival plan – think we’re going to stick with chainsaws and sawn off shot guns to the cerebral cortex. WEIRD BITES I really love your Monkey Feet Scientists have discovered that 1 in 13 people have monkey feet. Research conducted on 398 visitors to the Boston Museum of Science showed 8% have flexible ape-like feet. A Jurassic genetic flaw or mutation aside, we’re pretty sure our very own Angry Monkey would be happy to pit a round of ‘Big-Toe war’ against any of these homosapiens.

Shield of poo

Astronauts on board the Inspiration to Mars mission have been advised to use their own poop as a radiation shield. Set to pass by the Red Planet in 2018, radiation could be the biggest risk of this entire mission. NASA have planned for this extreme danger by devising containers to store their waste that will then be used to line the interior walls on the space craft. Proving that more viscose substances such and water, food and poo are ideal radiation mops, science has yet again discovered the benefits of a good dump and it’s potential life saving qualities. Furthermore should water supplies deplete during this mission there is a handy on board gadget that can extract water from the faeces providing drinkable fluids with a hint of nutty flavour! Think of that the next time you complain about desalinated water in Dubai!

International man of cool – with a Brazilian lilt – Anderson Lima is our InFocus star this issue. Mixing bright colours with a cool breeze, Anderson is a man who knows what he likes in both music and fashion. With an insane hat and shoe collection and a watch for nearly every day of the month, Anderson gives us a peek into his wardrobe… I would define my style as Brazilian street style. Mix of bold colours and textures. The essence of Brazil – Vibrant. My style influences include hip-hop, drum n bass and jungle. I love the style and the influence of the street. As a DJ I dress for style and comfort but ultimately always bright and bold to bring character and flavour. By day I am casual, relaxed and informal - I wear a lot of track stuff. Comfort is essential but also if the occasion calls I go smart. By night I have a smart bold style but it also depends on the occasion. I am no stranger to suit and tie! I am crazy for trainers and hats. I have lost count now but I have no more space in my house for them all. I have a big collection of Converse trainers and I love to buy my hats when in New York. NY is the best for hats. I have had the odd fashion disaster – especially during a festival in Brazil called ‘June fest’. People dress like vagrants and my friends love to buy me scruffy shirts to wear for this. My favourite brand is Puma - no question. I also really like Diesel. My third addiction after hats and shoes are watches. I have pretty much every brand of watch perhaps around 28? I guess the one particular style I dress in is cool 80’s. Retro bold colours but no plastic! I don’t have a style secret but I am known for my low rider jeans. My friends can always spot me a mile off. Look forward to August 16th where Andrerson will be bringing some Samba flavour @ Brazilian Spirit – In Warehouse

Emirates to introduce shisha lounges onboard A380 fleet DUBAI: Emirates has announced that it plans to trial new shisha lounges aboard its A380 fleet. In a statement released this morning, the Dubai-based airline revealed that the lounges would be available to business and first class passengers on several of its long-haul routes flown using Airbus’ superjumbo, starting from next month. “Alongside unique offerings such as our Signature Spa and Onboard Lounges, with our new Signature Shisha Rooms premium customers will be now be able to relax amid luxurious surroundings with a traditional waterpipe,” the airline said in a press release. “This new service will provide our Middle Eastern passengers with the sort of home comforts they’ve come to expect on our awardwinning airline, while presenting those flying to the Middle East for the first time with the opportunity to sample one of the true tastes of Arabia before they’ve even landed.” According to the statement, passengers will be able to pre-order a shisha from the onboard menu while at their seat and retire to the lounge after the main meal. Emirates added that, should the trials run smoothly, it hopes to have the shisha service operational across its entire fleet of A380s by the year end.

The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Cool James Locksmith

Mo Megadon

Bringing John Morales to Dubai and giving us one of the best events of the season, the Dust gents are riding very high on the Cool scale right now. Time to test that Fonze-ability in possibly the hardest test any DJ has ever had to take… Infusion Cool Test! Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? I once said I was a relative of the Generally my name tends to get me Onassis family but they didn’t into trouble, rather than out of... believe me. My nickname at school was? Asneezis (a parody of my family name Anezis). Not very creative Mozzy or Moz or Moss. nor was I known to sneeze, just that it rhymed, I guess. Have you ever injured yourself at work? Ouch!! I just banged my knee on I get cramps if I don’t stretch before this desk. scratching! It’s not big and clever but… Locksmith is really just my Great It’s delicious? Grandfathers surname. My best claim to fame is… Never turning the music down. Never having been on a rollercoaster Describe your best track in 5 words… This is f@$%ing awesome dude! Throw Your Pants in-the Air Your answer to everything is… Thoughts become things. [Insert hilarious cat picture here] Have you ever been arrested? Several times in my previous life. Can you please repeat the question? What’s the best insult you could give each other? Hey four eyes!!

Locksmith maintains an unhealthy crush on Queen Latifah.

The verdict: Refusing to compromise on volume nearly won this for contender Locksmith. However a giggle worthy Queen Latifa smack down and a track that induces undergarment airtime see’s Megadon and this weeks winner!

ANGRY MONKEY Immaculate conception The Monkey is sick of many, many things (world banana shortages, orangutan butts and having to de-lice yourself ‘cos the Mrs is out on the lash with her Chimpanzee crew), but one thing in particular winds me up like a Karama watch. Club concepts. Back in the day, when Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles were creating house from disco, their concept was crystal clear: take one dark room, fill it with cool people and add a big f*ck off soundsystem. Now that’s a concept the Monkey is on board with, and even nearly 40 years later it’s still more watertight than the Lost script. Fast-forward to the ostentatious badlands of Dubai and you have a clubbing clusterf*ck. Bottles of Champagne come with enough fireworks to put NYE to shame and are held aloft by a 6-man team as if they’re Medieval royalty. And just how many VVVIP nights can there be in one city before Dubai entirely disappears up its own arse like some grandiloquent sinkhole? Clubbing is the simplest form of entertainment in the world, and should be an entirely concept free world. If a dark room, good music and good people was good enough for the disco divas and house heroes, then it’s good enough for me.

Monkey Out...
