Informative Platform(s): the new public library
The Library embodies one of the last true public and open institutions in cities today. At the same time, as new media and technologies redefine traditional modes of learning, books tend to become an “old kind of software”. As information is becoming increasingly ubiquitous and available even in the most remote places, the role of the library is radically shifting from that of a physical depository of books into an informative, flexible platform that can provide other, new services for the promotion of knowledge but also fun. With or without books, libraries are gradually turning into reconfigurable places of gathering whose main activities aspire to be embedded into the local communities which they serve.

The experimental nature of this studio explored these new possibilities through the design of a medium-sized library as an architectural device able to host a variety of new learning activities and events. By viewing the library as an urban piece of “upgradeable hardware”, one can deermine the types of future “software” it will be able to host. In doing so, one can study the synergies created by the juxtaposition of different programmatic and spatial configurations in order to synthesize an integrated, multi-functional, gathering environment.
The studio consisted of two main aspects: research and design (Project A & Project B). Both projects resulted into two different, collective project books. Through the two main projects and smaller assignments students got to know and utilize a broad spectrum of tools that are integral to the architectural design process at different stages. The different assignments involved critical thinking, scholarly research, reading, discussing, writing, diagramming, model making, drawing, content editing, presenting, revising and epublishing among others. The final architectural product consists of and was informed by these processes.
Informative platform(s): the studio blog
Short but substantial reflections of the readings were posted on the studio blog (http://informativeplatforms.blogspot.com/) before each class, in order to ready to engage into a critical discussion. The purpose of the blog was to promote collective thinking on common issues but also act as a cross section of the studio process – an architect has to be always ready to describe and present his or her most current material or work in progress in a clear and engaging manner. Regular online postings, comments on co-students’ work and updates with material from the design process were a significant part of the studio.
