he holiday season is here! This means many of us will be invited to parties, dinners, happy hours and other gatherings all of which will be a great opportunity to healthily eat and drink. We could only wish! The fact is most parties we attend will have plenty of guilty pleasure foods ranging from cookies and pies to cheesy casseroles and buttery breads. At this time of year it is easy to forget about calories. Everyone is eating, drinking, and having a good time, so why shouldn’t you? Chances are you will also be given a little-or a lot-of grief for not having at least a taste of everything. You will more than likely not have control over the food served, but you can make wise decisions. With a little planning you can save yourself from the pounds you could pack on over the holidays. Here are a few tips:

18

IN FLUENTIAL

1. If you have control over the menu, make holiday dinners sensible. Don’t feel the need to make every dish normally considered part of a holiday meal. More than likely your guests will be pleased to not feel obligated to stuff themselves with a huge meal.

2. When making side dishes, steam instead of sautéing. Limit the amount of cream and cheese you use. Choose one guilty pleasure dish everyone likes and make that your only decadent choice.

3. Before you head to a party eat a small, healthy meal at home. This way you are not tempted to make your

entire dinner out of party food which is usually loaded with unhealthy fats, sugar and other simple carbs. Limit yourself to one or two small selections at the party.

4. The holidays are also a time to make merry with beverages. Start with water and make every other drink water. You will save yourself the calories and possibly the embarrassment of being the tipsy one at the company dinner everyone talks about in the break room the following week.

5. If you have multiple parties to go to in one evening, arrive after the meal is complete. You will be less likely to get a guilt trip for not eating. Of course, make sure the host knows you will be arriving later to the party if dinner is served as a seated meal.

6. Don’t stop burning those calories! Make sure to find time to keep up with your exercise routine. Try to get at least 30 - 45 minutes of cardio along with 2 - 3 resistance workouts in each week.

7. When you are not at a party or event, maintain your usual healthy eating habits. It is tempting to throw those healthy habits out the window this time of year. Try your best to stick to your regular, healthy diet and exercise routine.

8. Most of all enjoy yourself and don’t stress too much about it. Go ahead, live a little! Certainly do not drive yourself crazy thinking about the calories in grandma’s pumpkin pie or cheesecake. Make sensible decisions and do not overindulge. Wishing you healthy holidays!

Gucci Accesories for the Fashion Forward Woman By Marcia Nelson

As creative director of the fashion powerhouse Gucci, Frida Ginnani stands atop a fashion mecca. With a knack for marrying classic with contemporary, Ginnani has upheld Gucci’s high standards while keeping au courant. InFluential Magazine sat down with Erika Cerda, Gucci Brand Ambassador of Handbags and Accessories at Saks Fifth Avenue in Austin, Texas, to discuss Frida Ginnani, Gucci and its place amongst the shelves of Saks Fifth Avenue. How does Frida Ginnani incorporate her personal taste into her handbag designs? Frida was appointed to head women’s accessories in 2004. In 2006, she was promoted to creative director for Gucci. When Frida became head designer of women’s accessories, she went back to Gucci’s archive and incorporating her personal style and, re-designed several styles from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Among the re-designs is the new Bamboo logo for the lady-like type woman and the new Jackie for the easy-going, free spirited lady.

Who is the woman who carries handbags by Gucci? Gucci can be worn by everyone. If you plan to carry one bag a year Gucci has the style to fit your day. GG Canvas is Gucci’s most popular style. Each season it varies in the color of leather trim, the style, and texture. Gucci also has a way to fit the trendsetter. Each season Gucci puts on an amazing show in Milan and delivers new styles and colors for their collection.

It is available in the Sukey, the Joy Collection, and in the Continental Wallet. How does Saks Fifth Avenue cater to the fashion forward woman? Saks promotes various trends on-line and instore. Lately, each season we have seen multiple trends and Saks definitely delivers each trend. We are always one season ahead. We can see what is doing great the season before and make sure we continue it throughout the year. It is also making sure we have the hottest bags and accessories from the runways in the colors our clients need for their season’s wardrobe.

Dressed to Go By Marjorie Burciaga

Does keeping “Austin Weird” mean social attire is a coin toss when deciding what to wear? One might find themselves asking, “With clothing does anything really go when it comes to living in Austin?” Sometimes it sure seems that way when out on the town or attending functions. I choose to believe choices of attire must come from a position of not really knowing what is customary or expected for a particular event. Does one find themselves questioning, “What

I remember wondering how I had missed the news that the Purple One was going to be here in my city, doing what he does best (told you I was a fan). As I floated on Cloud 9 with ticket in hand, my last coherent thought at the time was “How do I get plugged into what’s going on around town?”

Incredibly, the arts in Austin continue to grow, literally, every year. As with music and film, Mr. Becker sees Austin becoming the Capitol of Live Performing Arts. Last year alone, there were over 650 live performances.

As a result of private

contributions, $150 million were raised to build the Long Center and support the remolding work needed at Bass Concert Hall. And with the new addition to the Zachary Scott Theater, Austin can

Still, in the age of having it all at your fingertips, it was a challenge for me to find out what was happening in the local venues in town because I had to go to so many places to view the information. That all changed when someone told me about a mobile app created by Performing Arts Programs Inc., also known as PAPI.

This brings us to another amazing feature of the app, the VIP Pass. “Think of the VIP Pass as having access to concierge level ticketing. We work with a third party company, Red Carpet Tickets, who are able to offer the best seats available for various events around town, not limited to performing arts, but also for ACL Stage, Moody Theater, and Frank Erwin Center Concerts, even sporting events. The people were patient and accommodating to me as a foreigner. Their architecture is beautiful and with so many mosques to photograph. I took all day shooting this city.
