Long Distance Love Struggles STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR LOVED ONES WHILE YOU’RE AWAY FOR LONG HAULS By JOHN CATLING FROM MARRIAGES MADE IN HEAVEN www.marriagesmadeinheaven.com.au

hether we believe in Adam and Eve, or the evolution of man as the birth of all human relationships, there is no denying that the desire for LOVE AND CONNECTION is still one of our greatest needs. The solution to satisfying the need for love and connection is best found in an intimate and committed relationship. But the challenge of building an intimate relationship and staying connected with someone we love is still as difficult now as it was then. Statistics are showing an alarming increase in family and relationship breakdown. It appears that people are finding it increasingly difficult to handle the complexities of developing a committed relationship Starting an intimate relationship with someone seems relatively easy but maintaining that intimacy is very hard. So if we all crave love and connection, and we appear to be able connect with others and even fall in love with them, then why are we having so many difficulties in keeping our relationships alive and strong? The answers lay in the way we communicate with each other and more specifically WHAT and HOW we communicate.

“Words of love attached to something tangible like flowers, chocolates or a gift will help cement the bonds of connection between people more effectively than an email or sms.”

If you want to stay connected to someone you love, then what you need to communicate to them are four very important messages. • I like you • You are valuable to me • I accept you as you are • I love you And if you are a man who loves a woman, you also need to communicate to her: • You are beautiful and you are special to me So HOW are we meant to communicate these simple, but powerful messages? The answer is through words and actions, by any and every means possible. HOW OFTEN? At least daily Nothing will ever replace the effectiveness of face-to-face, ‘I’m in-your-space’, physical contact however, nowadays with so many of us having to travel for work and particularly for those in the mining industry, it is of course difficult to maintain this physical contact daily. But there are other ways as modern technology has provided many different mediums for communication: Facebook, Twitter, e-mails, sms and video messaging allow us to saturate the airwaves with trillions of bytes of heartfelt words every day. Using our iPhone, iPad or PC to stay connected to each other is good, but it can of course sometimes feel very impersonal so it’s important that when you are home, you give the physical contact. A hug, a kiss, a word of encouragement or a thoughtful action delivered in person will always have far more impact on a relationship than any electronic message. Words of love attached to something tangible like flowers, chocolates or a gift will help cement the bonds of connection between people more effectively than an email or sms. So if you are serious about your relationships and want to stay connected with those you love, use the technology available, but also make the time to engage in good, old fashioned, physical touch and loving words spoken with eye-to-eye contact.

Rev John Catling and his wife of over 42 years, Patti, have been working with singles, engaged and married couples for over 20 years.

My wife and I have been married for over 42 years. Through the learning and application of the principles of marriage; and by trial and error, love and forgiveness and lots of hard work, we have an awesome marriage today.

Resiliency in the Workplace By Kelly maniatis, registered psychologist and member of the australian psychological society

We believe that a good marriage, like a good wine, gets even better with age and also that a good marriage provides the best foundation for success in every aspect of a couple's life. Time spent in getting and keeping your relationship right early in your marriage will save lots of time, heartache and money trying to repair a breakdown later on.

PRE WEDDING COACHING That is why we have a passion to not only help engaged couples have the most memorable wedding day possible, but also for them to get the very best in preparation for their marriage.

In the pressured lives we lead, everyday people commonly demonstrate resilience. Whether this is the sustained stress over time, the demanding hours we work, managing a difficult person (or boss) or completing a project in the short term. Being resilient does not mean that you have to suffer a major adversity or trauma. Being resilient is not a trait or a personality attribute whereby you either have it or you don’t. It involves behaviours, thoughts and actions which can be learnt and developed over time by anyone. The key is to accept responsibility for yourself and your behaviour. Being responsible involves the ability to respond not to react. When you react you give up control and act out of habit. The stronger the emotional reaction, the more rigid and predictable your behavior becomes. Lack of self-control is often caused by low frustration tolerance. It is a reaction that people have when things don’t work out or when others don’t behave the way they are expected to.

MARRIAGE COUNSELLING When it comes to marriage counselling, it’s often seen as something negative and used as a last desperate attempt to save a failing marriage relationship. Sadly, it is mainly used by couples who are already considering divorce. Most couples who seek marriage counselling as a last resort have allowed their relationship to deteriorate so badly before seeking help that when faced with the reality of what it would take to fix their marriage, divorce is seen as the easiest and least painful option. Good marriage counselling should be a problem detection and problem solving system. It should be utilised earlier and more regularly by married couples who haven't the skills or time to solve their own problems. We believe that if more married couples sought good marriage counselling sooner rather than later, we would see a lot more married couples enjoying the benefits of a dynamic, exciting and fulfilling marriage. There are MARRIAGE COUNSELLORS and there a GOOD MARRIAGE COUNSELLORS. All counsellors should have "counselling skills" developed either through professional training and/or personal experience. From research we have done over the last 15 years, the most effective marriage counsellors, i.e. those who have consistently helped couples not only avoid the disaster of divorce but also have helped them break through to the next and better level of marriage, appear to have the following characteristics: 1 - They believe in and understand the principles of building a dynamic marriage – they have the knowledge 2 - They have successful and stable marriages themselves – they have the experience 3 - They have been married longer than 10 years - they understand the challenges of change

If you would like some help please contact John: john@marriagesmadeinheaven.com.au or visit www.marriagesmadeinheaven.com.au n

Resilience is the ability to come back from failures, disappointments or setbacks, to be adaptable and flexible and to incorporate life experiences into new ways of thinking, feeling and acting” - Esther Orioli.

Characteristics of resilient people Contrary to popular opinion, people who are resilient are not necessarily highly optimistic. Resilient people possess characteristics of both optimism and pessimism. Resilient people tend to: • Cope effectively with stress and uncertainty • Bounce back from physical and psychological stress/distress • Adjust to disruptions in life • Remain calm during high levels of change • Maintain high levels of productivity • Have a strong capacity to plan ahead and look to the future • Have acknowledgement of current reality • Have an understanding of personal strengths and weaknesses • Posses a strong problem solving ability • Posses a strong ability to improvise and be flexible Building Resiliency To create a foundation of resilience in the workplace, consider three key areas: improving health and well-being, managing workloads and building happiness. In the next issue, I will discuss these three key areas in more detail and we will look at steps to achieving a happier and more satisfying life.

Business In The Spotlight

Miners Corp. Essentials

“Created by a Miner, for the Miners” M

iner’s Corp. Essentials (MCE) is a company that brings the mining community together through the mining and resources industry. Created by a miner for the miners, MCE provides available resources to assist with the various issues faced by those living the FIFO lifestyle. We spoke to Managing Director, Lynn Bowman to find out a little more about the company and how it started

How we started My husband, Graham came up with the idea that started MCE off and he’s been involved in mining for the past 19 years. He is a chef by trade, so his first intro to mining was through hospitality. It’s there that he found himself attracted to the ability to gain financially and boost his life plan. There was

12

Issue 17

also the opportunity to be able to achieve retirement at an early age! After six years of the FIFO lifestyle as a chef including servicing oil and gas,he moved onto underground mining. This “hard-core” career choice attracted him as it was more favourable and paid higher. He started as many used to - from the bottom, and worked his way up. He chose underground mining as he found it more exhilarating. He is interested learning about the earth, ground movement and the true Aussie spirit - blood sweat and tears! Over the years, Graham has been on both sides of the fence; management and the worker and he noticed something. Whilst coming into contact with quite a large number of people, young and old, the same questions, familiar issues and many problems with no answers started to appear consistently. He noticed a definite bond, immediately established within the industry which would

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

turn them into a family of their own - and unless you worked or lived within this, you could never truly understand it. They are a tight knit bunch, they trust each other and are reluctant to let in those who appear to have ulterior motives; they will always have each others back. Most of all, they are all tired of being targeted for their money, and being left disappointed for not being heard! There are many issues which go silently unaddressed and try to be solved within this “family”. It’s through this realisation that Miners Corp was created. The company would be a community hub for the Industry, gaining trust and respect by placing information within an area for all to access freely. This is an important core goal of MCE. The MCE logo represents the strength and bond of this family that exists within the mining industry. The symbol represents support, for when two hands are locked together it is impossible to divide.

CE provides an interactive website which belongs to the community. The website is the hub of the community that everyone and anyone can access and use for free by simply registering to become a member. Members can access all the information they seek, implement information themselves and play a physical role with how MCE grows including the content of material that is placed for all to view. Member’s information is placed onto a friendly, easy to use website and is accessible to them 24/7 within the community section of the website available nationally and internationally. For research, questions, provided requests and many known issues that affect an individual or all within the mining and resource industry and similar, MCE can provide solutions – and not only solutions to those within this industry, but to their support system including family and friends or even associates. Some of the questions or concerns that have previously been raised as well as the solutions include:

MCE provide a product proven to be far superior to all others and is the only product those who work within the industry insist on wearing. Safe, durable, protective coverage to the foot reinforcing the work safety boot, proving the ultimate health, hygiene and safety protection essential to industry OHS.

Solution: Field Professionals

Problem: “MY TOOL BAG ISN’T UP TO SCRATCH”

Problem: “WHERE TO NEXT?”

Accessories for the job Members were tired of paying good money for something that didn’t do what they need, or didn’t go the distance in the harsh environment they work in.

Solution: A Quality Product There is now an affordable product available that is once again superior to all the previous others, stands up in the harsh environment and the best bit, is made by miners!

Problem: “MY FEET HURT” Harsh work conditions leading to sore and damaged feet. Research from members provided MCE with a serious issue that constantly affected them; and this was also confirmed by people within the health industry. The environment the member worked in and the footwear required to be worn by OHS had a major effect on their feet, which basically translated into down time and the member not being able to work to their full capacity. Members reported tiredness, moisture issues, skin reactions and wasting good money for a product that just did not cut it.

Solution: The Ultimate Work Sock

Medical, counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists and more are working within the industry to provide solutions to alleviate and attain the worker’s emotional and physical health back.

Looking for the next job Research from members provided MCE with a serious issue that constantly affected them and this was also confirmed by professionals within various supporting industries. Recruitment agencies are constantly changing the way they process prospective employees. Many different agencies exist and many treat the members like “money tools” so highly skilled and talented people are lost along the way.

Solution: Recruitment and Training Professionals Problem: “I’M WORRIED ABOUT MY HEALTH” General health and skin reactions to work environment and toxins Members complained of numerous health issues that came about on the job. These varied from rashes to tiredness, infertility, mental and physical fatigue and vitamin deficiencies.

Solution: Bring on the Health Professionals Health professionals are now working alongside MCE on issues that exist from working in this environment, by providing awareness of existing solutions available and attending to solutions yet to be found.

Problem: “MISTAKEN IDENTITY” Don’t know why things are going badly! Isolation and long hours Members indicated that isolation and long work hours were a serious problem and quite often would fold into their personal relationships back home. Examples include anxiety, solitude, dependence, loss of control, depression, communication issues – the list goes on.

MCE seeks out and researches professionals who understand and offer true compliancy with regards to the miner as an individual. Whether for the light hearted issues, or the more serious that arise working within the mining and resources industry or to simply connect with those who share common paths, MCE connects and unites a community unto its own which deserves to be acknowledged accordingly. The mining and resources industry plays a major role for Australia, providing enormous financial support and stability. It’s the foundation that keeps the country’s economy growing so it’s only fair to provide the same enormous support to the very people who put their lives on the line and play an active role in the dependency of a country’s economic growth and history. MCE is there to answer all member queries, questions and requests. If MCE cannot provide the answer, they will research and provide direct awareness on the issue. The company seeks business and companies that are able to alter their services or products to the member’s individual needs and requirements. Broome’s Festival of the Pearl Shinju Matsuri

W

hether you’re a visitor, a new member of the community or you’ve been a local for years, Shinju Matsuri is the premier arts, cultural and community event in Broome. Running from the 10th to the 18th September, Shinju Matsuri - which is Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl” – has many exciting highlights including the colourful waking of Sammy the Dragon after his yearlong slumber right through to the spectacular fireworks finale. It’s an experience like no other as Broome comes alive with nine days of festivities that showcase talents of the region including traditional and contemporary arts. What’s more, the industry, community and tourism events celebrate and acknowledge Broome’s unique culture, history and diversity. Shinju Matsuri encourages all cultural groups from the Broome community to participate in the celebrations to develop constructive and harmonious community relationships. From designing and driving a float, performing on stage, submitting work for the art prize to carrying a flag, steering a boat, participating in a workshop and even tasting pearl meat, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. The festival really rekindles the excitement and romance of Broome’s early days as a world renowned producer of pearls and pearl shell. Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepangers, Filipino and Europeans flocked to Broome from the late 1800s to be a part of this prosperity. This unique multicultural population of pearl industry workers, including local Aborigines, contributed to the spirit and energy that is still present in the exotic town of Broome today. Located three hours drive from Perth, the area is truly unique. Not many places in the world are blessed with such an amazing blend of natural attractions as well as an abundance of quality local restaurants, wineries, art galleries and touring options. The towns of Dunsborough, Yallingup and Margaret River are a trio of towns that make for a sensational short break. Dunsborough is a popular tourist destination due to its quiet coves, north facing sandy beaches, surrounding national parks, nature reserves and scenic walk trails. Cafés, bakeries and fashion stores line the main streets of the town, and there are many restaurants serving delicious regional delicacies and premium local wine. For art lovers, there are stunning galleries showing off fine hand crafted pottery, wood works, sculptures and photography. For the adventurous, there is Ngilgi Cave to be explored and Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse to climb. Dunsborough is also a great place for water sports and is located near some of the best wineries in the region. As you travel further south along the coast, you’ll find Yallingup; an Aboriginal word meaning “Place of Love”. Yallingup township is positioned on a hill overlooking the stunning Yallingup Beach. The coastline is dramatic, where jagged rocks and high cliff faces are met by a haze of sea spray from the swell below. Yallingup Beach, Smiths Beach and Injidup Beach all offer some of the finest surf breaks in the world. Visitors can also see the spectacular underground caverns and the beauty of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. The most well known town in the region is Margaret River. Originally a chilled out surfie town, Margaret River has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of wineries, boutique breweries, unique accommodation and restaurants overlooking sweeping vineyards and surf breaks. Margaret River township is 10 kilometres from the Indian Ocean, positioned on the banks of the stunning Margaret River. Some of the most picturesque scenery in Western Australia is found there, incorporating

towering forest, a diverse coastline and lush green pastures that become a blaze of colour with wildflowers in spring. So many amazing experiences are waiting to be discovered, such as a cooking class or award-winning dinner at Cape Lodge Lakeside Restaurant to the ultimate pampering experience at Empire Retreat or an Indigenous cultural experience at Wardan Cultural Centre - not to mention the many world class vineyards and cellar doors that await you. Shark Bay Renowned for its white beaches, turquoise waters, rust red sand and marine life including whales, dugongs, turtles, dolphins, manta rays and more, Shark Bay is testimony to the wonders of the natural world. It became Western Australia’s first World Heritage listed area in 1991

Little Lagoon, near Denham

Denham Denham is the main service centre for the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. A small, friendly town, it offers safe swimming beaches and a range of accommodation, restaurants, shops, an airport and other essential services. It is also a gateway for exploring this beautiful and fascinating region. Cruises and tours to nearby attractions operate from Denham including Dirk Hartog Island, Steep Point, Shell Beach, Francois Peron National Park, and the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool.

Monkey Mia

Wildlife If you love wildlife, you will love Shark Bay. Some 17 species of mammals, 98 species of reptiles and amphibians and more than 230 species of birds have been recorded in the area. Whether on an organised tour or travelling on your own steam, you’re sure to spot some of the region’s fascinating wildlife. Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Visitor Centre Shark Bay became World Heritage listed in 1991, after meeting all four natural criteria. It’s only one of a handful of places in the world to do so. The World Heritage site covers 2.2 million hectares of land and sea on the coast of Shark Bay. The colourful and diverse landscapes, rare flora and fauna and world class examples of earth’s ecological processes all contribute to the region being World Heritage listed. The Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Visitor Centre celebrates Shark Bay’s biodiversity of ecosystems and explores the area’s World Heritage listing, natural landscape, bays, islands, lagoons, marine and terrestrial landforms and animals. Also call into the centre if you require information regarding tours, accommodation and related bookings in the Shark Bay area. The centre is open daily from 9am to 6pm except Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. Hamelin Pool Stromatolites Hamelin Pool, located 90 kilometres south east of Denham, is one of only a few places on earth where living marine stromatolites (the oldest living organisms on the planet) exist. These rocky looking lumps in the water resemble the oldest

and simplest forms of life on earth dating back 3.5 billion years. The water at Hamelin Pool is twice as saline as usual sea water due to sea grass banks situated across the bay’s entrance and rapid evaporation from the shallow water. Stromatolites are composed of bacteria and algae and animals that feed off these substances cannot tolerate such saline conditions. As a result stromatolites can grow here, undisturbed. Most stromatolites are extremely slow growing. Those in Hamelin Pool grow at a maximum of 0.3mm a year, so those which are up to a metre high are hundreds, if not thousands of years old. There is an excellent viewing platform out over the water and interpretive displays at the site and at the Hamelin Pool Telegraph Station nearby which houses a small museum. Shell Beach

Shell Beach This unique beach located approximately 50 kilometres south east of Denham is made up of countless tiny cockle shells layered up to 10 metres deep and stretching for over 120 kilometres. The shells were once quarried and used to build the walls of buildings in the area,

some of which can still be seen today. On a still day, the ocean at Shell Beach transforms into a palette of the most intense greens and blues. Eagle Bluff Just 20 kilometres south of Denham is Eagle Bluff. The scenic viewpoint features a 100-metre walkway along the top of a cliff face. The views from this vantage point are breathtaking and dugongs, rays and large fish are regular visitors in the shallow waters below. Peron Homestead Precinct Situated in the Francois Peron National Park, the Peron Homestead Precinct offers a taste of life from the 1950s when the park was a working sheep station. A self guided walk around the precinct explores the history of the area, visiting the shearing shed, shearer’s quarters and stock yards. Interpretive signs explain the station’s interesting history and an interpretive centre depicts stories of Indigenous inhabitants, European colonisation and current day conservation programs such as Project Eden. There is a natural hot tub fed from an artesian bore near the homestead that originally supplied water to the station’s stock and is now popular with visitors. The nearby barbecue and lawn is a great spot for picnics. Peron Homestead is accessible by two wheel drive vehicles. World Heritage Drive Follow the interpretive signage along the World Heritage Drive to learn about this amazing area and how it satisfies all four of the natural criteria to become heritage listed. The World Heritage Drive starts at the Overlander Roadhouse on the North West Coastal Highway and continues 180 kilometres through to Monkey Mia.

Little Lagoon Five kilometres from Denham towards Monkey Mia is Little Lagoon. This pristine waterway is a natural nursery for whiting. Beach and barbecue facilities provide for a peaceful day swimming, sun bathing, feasting on a picnic or enjoying the sunset.

Shark Bay Marine Park covers 1500 kilometres of coastline, making it the largest marine embayment in Australia. On any visit you’re likely to spot turtles, dolphins, manta rays, whales and dugongs, be it on a boat or from the shore. Francois Peron National Park Francois Peron National Park lies just north of Denham, adjacent to the Shark Bay Marine Park. The park covers 52,500 hectares of arid shrub lands, rolling sand plains and spectacular coastal scenery. Here, striking rust red sand dunes give way to brilliant white beaches and crystal blue ocean. The diversity of vegetation also provides a colourful spectacle in winter. The Wanamalu Trail stretches for 1.5 kilometres along the cliff edge between Cape Peron and Skipjack Point and is a 45-minute (one way) walk that provides excellent views of the coastline. Interpretive signs along the trail provide an introduction to the features of

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

the area and two viewing platforms at Skipjack Point provide striking coastal views and the opportunity to view Shark Bay’s abundant marine life. Vehicle access to Francois Peron Park is from the Monkey Mia road, about four kilometres east of Denham. The road to the Peron Homestead is accessible for two wheel drive vehicles but high clearance four wheel drives are essential for travel further north into the park. Designated basic campsites at Big Lagoon, Bottle Bay, Herald Bight Gregories and South Gregories lead to fishing spots along the coastline. Gas barbecues are supplied, wood fires are not permitted and visitors need to bring water supplies when visiting the park. The park was named after the French zoologist, Francois Peron, who arrived in Shark Bay in 1801 on the vessel Geographe, under Captain Baudin. Peron’s observations proved to be of great importance to the natural history of the region. Monkey Mia Monkey Mia Reserve is located on the eastern shore of Peron Peninsula about 23 kilometres from the town of Denham. Home to the world famous Monkey Mia dolphins, it’s a must stop for families and nature lovers alike. Monkey Mia also offers many other attractions and tours including beach camel treks, catamaran wildlife sailing cruises and Indigenous tours. Explore the area surrounding Monkey Mia on the easy, 1.5-kilometre walk trail starting at the Denham and Monkey Mia Visitor Centre and heading into the sand dunes before returning to the beach. Access to Monkey Mia Reserve is subject to a Department of Environment and Conservation National Park entrance fee.

Indigenous Perspective Gathaagudu is the Aboriginal name for Shark Bay, meaning two waters. Long before Europeans landed and settled in the Shark Bay area, the land and waters of Monkey Mia and surrounds provided a livelihood for the local Nhanda and Malgana people. You can get an Indigenous perspective on Shark Bay by taking a walking tour departing from the Denham and Monkey Mia Visitor Centre several times a day. Learn about the Indigenous history of Shark Bay and its many plants and animals. Become an animal tracker and discover which plants make good bush tucker and medicine. Along the walk you will visit significant cultural sites including a shell midden and caves where archaeological evidence has dated Indigenous occupation back thousands of years.

Zuytdorp Cliffs

Dolphins The dolphins of Monkey Mia are famous for their daily ritual of swimming to shore to interact with humans. As the bottlenose dolphins are wild, numbers and the exact time of their visit varies, however they usually visit the shore up to three times a day, usually starting at 7.30am. Wildlife Cruises Be sure to join a wildlife cruise aboard a catamaran yacht tour. Sailing out into the rich waters of Shark Bay Marine Park, you may get the opportunity to get close to dolphins, turtles, dugongs and many more marine species. Alternatively head out on a sunset cruise and relax with a drink as the sun sets over the nearby rust red cliffs. Abundant Marine Life Shark Bay Marine Park covers 1500 kilometres of coastline, making it the largest marine embayment in Australia. On any visit you’re likely to spot turtles, dolphins, manta rays, whales and dugongs, be it on a boat or from the shore. The shallow waters support a diverse ecology, including the largest number and area of seagrass species in the world, providing nutrition and shelter for the marine life. Shark Bay is also an important turtle nesting area. Tours are available, offering visitors the unique opportunity to witness Shark Bay’s abundant marine life. Dugongs Due to the vast sea grass meadows in the Shark Bay Marine Park, dugongs can be found year round near Shark Bay. The Shark Bay area alone supports 10 per cent of the world’s dugong population. They feed on the significant sea grass meadows that blanket the sea floor of the Shark Bay Marine Park. You can’t help but be enchanted by these graceful (if a little bizarre looking) creatures. You can experience dugongs on a wildlife cruise from Monkey Mia or on a scenic flight above Shark Bay to spot them. Dirk Hartog Island For those who like a little seclusion, Western Australia’s largest island, Dirk Hartog offers a peaceful retreat of beautiful scenery and private white sandy beaches. Dirk Hartog Island was the first recorded landing on Australian soil by Europeans. Captain Dirk Hartog announced his arrival by erecting an inscribed pewter plate at

the site now known as Cape Inscription. A replica of this plate can be seen at the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Visitor Centre. Fishing is very good around the island. Scuba diving, snorkelling and walking are also great ways to explore the surrounds. The island is open to visitors from March to October. Air and land tours and accommodation need to be prearranged and bookings are essential. Steep Point and Zuytdorp Cliffs Spectacularly beautiful Steep Point is the most western point of mainland Australia and is a Mecca for fishermen. In fact it’s known to be

one of the world’s most successful land based game fishing locations. Access is by four wheel drive only and visitors are advised to exercise caution and bring their own drinking water and supplies. This area also features the magnificent Zuytdorp (pronounced Zurtoff) Cliffs towering up to 170 metres above sea level. The Zuytdorp Cliffs that begin at Kalbarri to the south and end at Steep Point in the north make for some amazing scenery, including blowholes that shoot sea spray up to nine metres into the air. Land and scenic air tours are available to Steep Point and over the Zuytdorp Cliffs. n

Healthy Habits for Miners L

ets face it, a day in a life of our Australian miners can be tough, to say the least. They are working long hours, mostly in the heat and the dust and as if these conditions aren’t hard enough for them, many are not looking after their nutritional needs. To be a top performer under these conditions, looking after health is of utmost importance. How can miners improve their performance? Well luckily it’s not rocket science. Simply making small lifestyle changes and being prepared can lead a healthier life - with little effort. What are the benefits? Well besides feeling more energetic and performing better, good nutrition can give us more confidence and self esteem - simply because we look and feel better. Good nutrition can lower risk of developing a range of chronic disease. For example,

24

Issue 17

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

eating less saturated fat may lower the risk of heart disease. Good Nutrition and good eating habits will contribute to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight as well. A well balanced diet should consist of a wide variety of nutritious foods. To get the right balance, we need to eat plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits. Plenty of cereals (including breads, rice pasta and noodles), preferably wholegrain. Make sure to include lean cuts of meat, fish, poultry and/or alternatives, reduced fat varieties, where possible. Choose low-fat and fat-free dairy products. Breakfast We all know that starting the day with a good wholesome breakfast is a must. Skipping breakfast only results in lack of concentration and filling up on junk at morning tea time. Your day should consist of three healthy

www.indiana.com.au

main meals, and three nutritious snacks for morning tea, afternoon tea, and supper. Nuts, yoghurts and fruits are good choices for snacks and let’s face it, even the busiest people can’t use the excuse that they don’t have time to pack snacks like these.

Lunch Nutritious easy lunches should consist of salad sandwiches and rolls, with low fat meats, fish or poultry, such as lean ham, tuna, or salmon. Or lean chicken, or turkey breast. To keep food fresh and cool, pack lunches and snacks in small eskies with ice packs.

Dinner Low fat cuts of meat, like lean steak, chicken breast or fish, with a side serve of salad, or steamed vegetables and a microwaved baked potato, are good choices. And if you are going out to the pub or a restaurant to eat, that’s fine. Most venues these days are catering for the health conscious. They will happily grill fish instead of frying. Ask for salad dressings to be put on the side, and ask

them to replace chips with a larger serving of vegetables or salad. The other thing to do is watch your portion sizes. The result of overeating only leads to weight gain, tiredness and feeling sluggish.

Warm up this winter… Another good tip for miners who live onsite is to share the cooking with other miners, sort of like car pooling. Agree to have a nice nutritious meal together a couple of times a week and agree to try out healthy meals and share the cost instead of dining out. That way, you not only save money and avoid the situation of eating the wrong things but you might pick up some new cooking skills on the way as well. If these tips don’t help you and you really feel like you need some expertise, you can always contact me directly by email or phone, and I now consult via Skype. So what are you waiting for? Feel better today, and for the rest of your life! n

Now is the perfect time to relax and enjoy cosy booths by the fire and sumptuous wood-fired dishes whilst taking in the picturesque views of the Indian Ocean.

Sunday Lunch by the River in Perth At The Old Brewery

A

warded Perth’s Best Steakhouse for the third year in a row, The Old Brewery recently introduced a delicious new set three course seasonal menu to enjoy sunny Sunday lunches by the river. General Manager and chef, Greg Farnan said he was eager for everyone to be able to experience the best of The Old Brewery and the new set lunch menu is a great way to sample some of the most popular dishes. This new lunch special includes three courses with your choice of entrée, main and dessert. Experienced sommeliers are on hand to happily assist diners in finding the perfect matching beverage to accompany their chosen dish.

Greg’s personal lunch recommendation is the sumptuous roast black angus prime rib with yorkshire pudding and roast vegetables carved at your table, then wash it all down with the onsite Brewer’s latest seasonal creation, the Crawley Bitter. “You just can’t go past the roast on a Sunday,” said Greg. “If it wasn’t served at The Old Brewery for lunch, I would be cooking it up at home.” With Perth’s perfect weather, now is the ideal time to relax and enjoy The Old Brewery’s award winning food and beer by the river. Buying a Boat? We speak to Maz Yahiya from All Boat Business to get some TOP TIPS

I

f you’re buying a new boat, in my opinion you should definitely buy Australian. Australian boats are designed for the Australian lifestyle as well as Australian conditions. They hold their value more consistently than imported boats and it keeps your money right here in the country.

Event In The Spotlight

The 2011 Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show 14th to 16th October 2011

P

romoting and celebrating the unique West Australian boating lifestyles, the 2011 Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show kicks off on Friday 14th October. The event provides a plethora of information, demonstrations and activities on all aspects of boating and the boating lifestyle in the main entertainment areas at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club, Mandurah Ocean Marina. From cooking demonstrations and fashion parades to product reviews and even kayaking demos on the water, there’s something for every boating enthusiast. Even those that haven’t had much to do with boating are catered to with “how to go boating” demonstrations and this year seeing the launch of Tastes of the West, an exclusive food and wine segment dedicated to the exceptional local produce that WA has to offer. With adult tickets priced at only $18 (children and pensioner/student tickets are even less), this event is one not to be missed. Opening times are from 10am to 6pm on the Friday and Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on the Sunday. n

Another very important point for the new boat buyer is that Australian boats don’t have any towing restrictions. Imported boats can be over the width allowance and you can’t tow after dark or on freeways – there is a whole bunch of towing limitations. A lot of people won’t tell you about these restrictions on imported boats so the buyer doesn’t realise until they get their permit and of course by that time, it’s too late. At All Boat Business, we only sell Australian brand new boats and with second hand, we sell all sorts. We specialise in first time boat buyers and matching the buyer to the right boat. An example here is we look at the towing and storage limitations that the customer has. A lot of yards don’t care about that, but we will first look at their car and their storage and only then look at the options they have and their boating needs. There’s no point selling someone a 28 foot luxury cruiser if they can only store a dingy! So there’s a lot to think about. Basically if you’ve ever thought of buying a boat, come and talk to us. Our moto is ‘great prices, priceless service.’ We’re a complete marine dealership and deal with anything and everything nautical. What’s more, we have the best employees in the industry - we’re all about the right help. n

The Advantage of a Property Manager A

good property manager does so much more than collect rent on your behalf; they will make sure the management of your property complies with the Residential Tenancies Act, the Rental Bond Act, the Privacy Act and other relevant legislation. They will find the best tenant for your property by conducting extensive background checks using systems such as the National Tenancy Database, the largest tenancy database in Australia. A professional relationship is maintained with tenants, avoiding potential issues which can develop between a tenant and a landlord managing a property privately. Property managers will maximise the returns from your investment by achieving market value and minimising the time the property is vacant. A comprehensive Property Condition Report and Routine Inspection Reports are provided to you, as well as detailed end of month and end of financial year statements. They are also able to arrange maintenance with reputable tradespeople on your behalf. Ray White Kalamunda is able to facilitate all aspects of investment property, from investment finance and buying, providing quality property management and obtaining a premium price when it is time to sell. Call property manager, Kelly Stone or principal\licensee, Nigel Aldridge on (08) 9293 4888 for more information. n

Drill and Blast Careers

Go Off with a BANG

R

oger Patterson was just 15 when he saw his first blast. The loud pound of the explosives, the ripple as the earth lifted, the dust cloud and the eerie silence that followed gave him an exhilarating buzz that he still remembers to this day. Roger, who is Perth born, was living in New Zealand with his family and had accompanied his father, an engineer geologist, to work when he witnessed a blast being conducted at a tunnel construction site. It was this experience that cemented in his mind exactly what he wanted to do when he grew up – he wanted to blow things up. After four-and-a-half years, Roger still experiences that same buzz as a drill and blast supervisor working for HWE Mining in the Pilbara. Since starting his career with HWE Mining as a drill sampler, Roger has managed to scale the ranks and just recently joined HWE Mining’s Drill and Blast Supervisor Development Program. The program identifies high potential drill and blast crew members

and provides them with progressive training and on the job development so they can move into supervisor roles fully qualified. As part of the 18-month program, Roger will have internal and external training in safety and leadership and gain experience in all technical, operational and statutory areas of drilling and blasting. Part of the program also means Roger will obtain his Restricted Quarry Manager Certificate and Cert IV in Surface Extraction Operations. “I have been given this great opportunity to progress in my career and I feel that it's a testament to the fact that HWE Mining value their employees and are committed to training and developing them,” Roger said. “I took a chance with HWE Mining four years ago and they have reciprocated by taking a chance with me by offering me this opportunity.” Roger currently spends eight days working at site, before flying home to Perth for six days of down-time. During those six days off, Roger enjoys playing touch rugby, renovating

his property in Camillo and spending time with his family – wife Stephanie, young kids Heath, Kate and Aidan, and his two dogs Cooper and Murphy. “My favourite part of the job is the constant challenge and the job satisfaction when things go to plan,” said Roger. “There are always a lot of balls in the air in this role so you need to be very focused, have good attention to detail and be able to see the big picture.” Roger also admits that the buzz he experiences is the highlight of his job. “After all these years I still feel great satisfaction seeing something that has been meticulously planned go off with a bang,” he laughs. Roger’s message to others wanting to get on board with HWE Mining to take advantage of the Drill and Blast Supervisor Development Program. “If you are a goal oriented person and enjoy a challenge, HWE Mining is the company for you.” n

Heavy Minerals 2011 Conference in Perth

T

The Eighth International Heavy Minerals Conference 2011 is to be held at the Pan Pacific Perth Hotel from the 5th to the 6th October.

he Conference will provide the ideal forum to chart the technical advancements, innovative measures and market forces that impact in a technical manner on the heavy minerals industry. The event will bring operators, planning personnel, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, government regulators, consultants and research and technology personnel together to explore their achievements and build a better industry. The privilege of hosting the series of Heavy Minerals Conferences is shared globally among a number of mineral institutes and countries and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) is proud to host the 2011

conference. In conjunction with the other major institutes, this call for papers extends globally to all the key players in the Heavy Minerals Industry. Consistent with the aims of The AusIMM, the Conference will allow members and the industry to keep abreast of views and opinions on technical aspects and provide a forum to air technical and factual information within the Heavy Minerals sector of the industry. The heavy minerals industry has seen significant development in recent years and as we emerge from the global financial crisis, some say that we are poised for rapid development and more buoyant markets. Over many years we have seen a suppressed investment climate within the mineral sands sector and, arguably, we can

expect to see a resurgence of activity over the next few years as producers jostle for position in a recovering market. Innovation and technical development are essential parts of any successful company’s future and ability to realise maximum value. For more information on the conference, including registration, visit www.ausimm.com.au/heavyminerals2011/home.asp. Stop smoking the natural way... By BETTINA MANIATIS

W

ith a plethora of ‘quit smoking’ chemicals claiming to work nowadays from nicotine patches to prescription drugs, perhaps all we really need is a natural solution. Acupunturist, Jasmine Peris has helped many smokers quit the craving with acupuncture. “Because smoking is an addiction, it can be cured with acupuncture,” Jasmine said. “Things like nicotine patches are just a band aid really, and quite dreadful when you think about it. “It’s just pumping your body with more poison.”

So, how does it actually work? “It works at removing the craving of the nicotine by cleaning the blood,” said Jasmine. “It cleans the filter organs, strengthens the immune system and can also strengthen the lungs.

“By treating the nicotine craving as an addiction, we can re frame the mind so the addictive behaviour is gone.” According to Jasmine, acupuncture works on what is called you meridians, which are like pathways in the body your energy flows through. These meridians were mapped out by the ancient Chinese and by stimulating certain areas along them, different effects can be achieved. These points are the acupuncture points. “The needles act as conductors to your body’s electrical system and this in turn helps with the body’s energy flow.” Jasmine explains. “In short, acupuncture works on the central nervous system.” And for the needle phobes out there, not to worry; acupuncture needles are very fine, solid, sterile disposable needles that are about the size of a hair. Jasmine tells us that needle insertion techniques have been developed over the years so skilled acupuncturists can place a needle in with little or no superficial sensation.

So, now to the nitty gritty of it all – how many sessions does it take? “On average is takes three sessions,” Jasmine said. “Plus you get a bottle of herbs to take home. “What happens is basically, after the sessions, when a client takes in a cigarette, it tends to taste awful and that actually stops the craving. “And contrary to what people may think, the craving for cigarettes isn’t replaced with food,” she continued. “It’s usually just a habit that they change over from one to another - but this doesn’t occur with acupuncture.” So, next time you reach for the nicotine patches or go to pick up that Champix, why not think about ditching the chemicals for something natural. Your body will thank you for it. n

Range Rover Vogue Autobiography By sam tinson

I

f you’ve ever driven a Range Rover, or even been a passenger in one, you’ll know why these boxy, British-built four-by-fours are fast proving more popular than oxygen. From the lofty perch of those lovely, leatherclad armchairs up front, you can look down on the little people and know that you’re bigger, stronger, safer, more comfortable and better provided for than anything else on the road. For your inner Mariah Carey, that’s a kick almost as big as the one delivered by the big V8 turbo diesel under the Range Rover’s bonnet. Just as its name implies, the Autobiography is ‘all about me’; it takes the already lavish Vogue TDV8 Luxury model as a starting point, and dials up the opulence to levels that would make the Sultan of Brunei blush. So on top of the heated leather steering wheel, climate-controlled seats, 14-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, twin DVD players and automatic, well, everything, you also get a dual-view touch screen interface, all-round vision assist comprising no less than five external cameras, 20-inch diamond-turned alloy wheels and more wood and leather than a boatful of Vikings.

On the outside, the Autobiography has plenty of extra bling to help it stand out from the 4x4 pack. As well as those gangsta rims, you get a mesh finish on the front grille and side vents, and a beefed-up front bumper. There are performance enhancements too: adaptive dynamic ride and rear electronic differential as standard will make those pesky traffic islands even less of a bother. The longer you live with this car, the more you grow to appreciate the many little ways in which it makes your life easier. The heated front windscreen that never mists up; the almost total soundproofing when the windows are raised; the automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers; the courtesy lamps in the doors that illuminate puddles to stop you splashing your Jimmy Choos when you exit. It’s like having an entourage of paid servants fussing over your every whim. Like all Range Rovers, the Autobiography gets a raft of advanced passive and active safety features. Every item of accident prevention technology available has been crammed into the car’s underpinnings, and because Range Rovers are designed to go

offroad – indeed, to places where roads haven’t even been invented yet – it’s all engineered to more extreme performance perimeters than you’ll find in any other production car. You might think that a vehicle that’s furnished like a luxury hotel and built like a battleship might be a tad leaden on its feet. Not so. Heavy cars rely on engine torque for getup-and-go performance, and Range Rover’s new 4.4-litre turbo diesel V8 has 700Nm of the stuff. This is equivalent to having four Mini Coopers under the bonnet, and enough to boot the Autobiography from 0-100km/h in just 7.8 seconds. With the turbo providing an extra wallop of mid-range grunt, you’ll quickly forget you’re driving a car that weighs close to three and a half tons. And if you run out of highway? Well then you can keep on going, because for all its creature comforts and fabulous fashion sense this Range Rover remains a seriously capable offroad vehicle at heart. If you so wish, you can drive it up a mountain, through a river, across a desert or into a war zone – leathertrimmed floor mats and all. That, surely, is the ultimate decadence. n

how to get that car

sooner With a Personal Car Shopper! By BETTINA MANIATIS

A

s in our lives we get busier and busier, some tasks that used to be relatively straightforward are becoming more and more time consuming with others downright impossible. In today’s world though, there are now a variety of options when it comes to assistance. We can hire cleaners, nannies, gardeners,

people to wash our cars, people to do our laundry, people to do our ironing – the list goes on. There are some tasks however that still remain as time consuming as ever – if not more – like purchasing a car. With more makes, models and financing options than ever before, not to mention the

availability of information thanks to the worldwide-web, things to consider include research, applications, test drives, kilometres, warranties and so much more – and it seems when it comes to purchasing a car, there’s no cutting corners unless you’re quite happy to face the possibility of getting ripped off. So image my surprise when I learned of a

personal car shopper! And I’m not talking about handing over your credit card over to someone who’ll get all the joy of taking your new car on a test drive and making all your decisions for you. I’m talking about a company that arranges your finance pre approval, gives you a list of reliable cars based on your preference - each one fully inspected and approved, brings the vehicle to your home for you to test drive and finalises all the registration and paperwork at the end. I’m talking about a company called Smooth Financial Services. I spoke with Smooth Financial’s Director, Warren Haslam to understand a little more about what the company does, how they work, and most importantly, how they can get that car sooner. BM: Warren, tell me about the company and how it works. WH: We are a local finance company specialising in the purchase of vehicles, motor bikes, boats and the like. We look after the interest of the buyer and we’re basically like a personal finance specialist working for the individual. It’s great for time restricted people because our clients don’t need a lot of appointments. In fact, we can do everything online or by phone and we do finance pre approval as well. BM: OK, so if someone wants to buy a car… WH: We can get them the vehicles they’re interested in, get them pre approval for a lease or loan over the net or phone, have all inspections taken care of and even drive the car to the client for a test drive. It’s taking all the hard work out of buying a car! Their time is not spent running around trying to find the best deal - we take care of that for them. BM: Wow, so you guys can do the whole lot! Where do you get the cars? WH: Because we have 20 years of experience working with motor dealers, we have quite a few on our books so if a client wants a specific car, we can source them plenty to choose from. That’s why we’re like a personal shopper for your car! All the dealer vehicles come fully inspected. Smooth Financial Services can also arrange an independent inspection so when you’re buying a car through us, you know everything about it as you get a full report. BM: So you don’t deal with private sales? WH: Oh yes, in fact with private sales it is best to come through us because we inspect the vehicle, we do checks to make sure it has not been damaged or tampered with, and we make sure everything that’s needed is there such as chassis number, the registration details are all good, we make sure no one else owes money on it and that sort of thing. It’s all pretty important because a lot of times you see a deal that seems too good to be true, and it can often be just that. We just make sure we find out everything so nothing nasty pops up. BM: And you do both loans and leases… WH: That’s right. The difference between a loan and leasing is with a loan, you buy the car, and with a lease, you basically rent it. So with leasing,

48

Issue 17

the financier buys the car for you, and then you’re renting the car off them. We work one on one with our clients to determine what’s best for them by giving them all their options and explaining everything in detail. It really depends on the client’s use of the vehicle and the proposed time frame. BM: So what’s the difference between Smooth Financial and any other financial institution? WH: The Smooth difference is that we give every client a 12 Month Vehicle Hand Back Policy so if any listed life changing event occurs, like losing their job, getting transferred overseas or getting ill, our Vehicle Hand Back Policy can cancel up $7500 of the difference between what their vehicle may be worth and the payout on their financial commitment. BM: Wow that’s different! How are you able to do that? WH: It works for the client as well as the financier because one of the main reasons people don’t pay back their loans is the life changing circumstances I’ve mentioned. We’re really helping both sides of the spectrum. BM: And what about those people who have found the exact vehicle they want, or want to put in the work themselves and do the research? WH: Well, we can come in handy there too because we give the pre approval for the finance quickly, over the phone or net. We have plenty of clients like that who already have a vehicle in mind and just want to finance it with us. And for those who want to research for themselves, the client would come to us and say they’re interested in getting a vehicle for a certain amount, we give them pre approval and then they’re free to go and search for the car. If you know what your limit is, what’s in your pocket, you’re free to search around to find that really

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

good deal. We find though that about 50 per cent of our clients will say to us that they’re not only happy with the finance, they’re also happy with the vehicle we found for them. BT: Are there any other benefits in coming to Smooth Financial over, say, one of the bigger companies? WH: We can probably get our hands on a vehicle a lot quicker than the bigger companies because they have to put it through their systems which can be a pretty long process. Plus whenever a vehicle gets puts through their system, there’s a cost involved. Because we buy that many vehicles from dealers, they give us a pretty big discount. BT: And you mentioned something about taking the car to the client for a test drive? That sounds too good to be true! WH: No, I can assure you its true! Based on where the client lives, we normally have a dealer not too far away to drive the vehicle to that client. Then they can drive it themselves, no hassle. They don’t have to go to a showroom and actually see the vehicle without the fancy lights - and see it in their own garage. The reason we’re so flexible is because we already have all their details so we don’t have to worry about anyone taking off with one of the cars or anything like that! (Laughs) Also, some people can be intimidated going into a car yard so this is really helpful there. The client’s not being hassled by anybody. BT: OK, so in summary… WH: In summary we really are like a personal shopper for you car purchase. We are able to access the vehicle, we can finance it, and, should a life changing event occur, our clients aren’t committed. That’s our point of difference. We’re the only people that give a complimentary 12 Month Vehicle Hand Back Policy.

Wendy’s Predictions

T

he mining industry in my eyes looks set to boom even more – a great thing for Australia. I see huge purpose built satellite/sub cities being built across lots of land to accommodate everyone with a lot of thought gone into making people comfortable in the remote areas. Large airports will be servicing them. Everything is brand new, with the latest technology, and products. There will be one stop shops so to speak and you will be able to get everything done there and all of your needs met (i.e. dentist,

Who is Wendy Rosvall-Brookes? “I am a clairvoyant medium, from a long line of women in my family who also have 'the gift' including my daughters. I didn't choose to be this way -it's just who I am, and it's only now, at 42, that I finally step up and say proudly, 'My name is Wendy Rosvall-Brookes and I am a Clairvoyant Medium!' It took a while to be that comfortable. I have a busy practice on the Gold Coast, but I am a global clairvoyant. Current technology allows this. I travel a lot (too much sometimes) and my clients come from all over the world -and back again! To reunite people with their relatives that have passed over is, to me, the biggest gift have been given.

every issue we get the scoop from our resident clairvoyant, Wendy rosvall-brookes. this issue, she tells us what she sees in store for: The mining industry

doctor, shopping, entertainment, swimming and other recreational activities). I also see that the whole area is set up to be self sufficient and that the Government has had a part to play in instigating this also, and is proud of this achievement on the world arena. I also see huge singing stars and football games being brought to the towns for the people and families that live there. You will not have to travel anywhere else, a bit like what Google’s Head Office is like. All under one roof, but a big one! The father hearing from his son, the lung transplant patient hearing from the lung owner, the orphaned teenagers hearing from their parents - and so it goes on. To be a part of that peace giving moment -words cannot express. I have tears in my eyes even now and yes, sometimes I cry along with them. I run my practice in a very professional manner, with ethics, morals, humbleness and sincerity - there are no crystal balls here! It would be easier not to do this as a profession, and take an easier, quieter role in life - but that is not what I am here for. Before a clairvoyant takes to the stage, so to speak, it is my belief that we all suffer a traumatic time. To be able to deal with every situation and person that comes through the door, the school of hard knocks presents

I also feel that something is being mined in secret that the general population is not meant to know about, and is shipped overseas. It’s like a contra deal that is top secret and will always be covered up. I feel this metal is used for warfare, to build craft with – a sad business for our world. Scanning forward hundreds of years, these mining towns will become ghost towns of what used to be, and will remain a tourist destination showing what happened in old Australia. itself first and then the work begins. In my life, I have been through adoption, abuse by a parent, the death of my two brothers and sister, I had a parent attempt suicide, was reunited with my birth parents, had two destructive marriages (my last husband ended up in a cult!), experienced homelessness, redundancy, rejection in all possible ways, obesity, PCOS, A child with ADHD/ Aspergers, single parent hood - and the list goes on. But the real story is one of being a survivor in a sometimes cruel world and doing majority by myself whilst raising my daughters single-handedly. The only thing that got me through was my bigger than life belief of "upstairs" and in the fact I was never truly alone.”

AIMEX 2011 “Theme Days” Announced

...and the show just got a lot bigger

A

series of “theme days” which will look at addressing some of the key issues in Australian mining have been announced for this year’s Asia-Pacific's International Mining Exhibition (AIMEX), to be held at Sydney’s Olympic Park, from September 6 to 9. Each day of the exhibition will have its own theme, incorporating information and demonstration sessions, along with special networking events. The four theme days are: • Safety Day (Tuesday 6th September) • Women in Mining Day (Wednesday 7th September) • Careers and Training Day (Thursday 8th September) • Innovation in Mining Day (Friday 9thSeptember) In addition, throughout the four days of the show there will be a “frontliners” focus – aimed at mining industry frontline personnel, including operators, fitters, foremen, supervisors and the like. This will include a networking and social event every day, to which frontliners will be invited, plus every day there will be an opportunity to win an Apple iPad 2. And with unprecedented exhibitor demand for space at AIMEX, Reed Mining Events has released a further 1000 sq m making room for an additional 50 exhibitors. “This year’s exhibition will have more than 550 exhibiting companies, covering more than 45,000 sq m, making it nearly 20 per cent larger than the previous edition of AIMEX in 2007,” Baker said. For further information on visiting AIMEX 2011, please email aimex@reedexhibitions.com.au or visit www.aimex.com.au. n

Where Have All the Geologists Gone?

Are you a geologist? If so Western Australia and Digirock needs you!

n their continual search for experienced exploration geologists, Digirock - Australia’s provider of quality “boots-on-ground” geologists - constantly meets with the reality that rock-solid geologists with suitable skill sets are hard to find. According to Job Outlook, there were 7700 geologists employed in Australia in 2010 and 9.7 per cent, or about 750 geologists, leave the profession annually. With only around 200 geologists graduating in Australia each year (Graduate Careers Australia 2010 Graduate survey) it is no surprise that Australia suffers a rock-bottom deficit of about 550 home-grown geologists annually. In a labour market as tight as Western Australia’s, exploration and mining companies and suppliers like Digirock have to get creative with their staff attraction and retention strategies. To this end, Digirock has a strongly developed culture of structured training and clear career development pathways which turns today’s graduate geologists into tomorrow’s seniors and exploration managers. Exploration project management undertaken by Digirock provides the opportunity for graduates to progress into project geologist roles and for project geologists to progress to senior roles under the guidance and mentorship of Digirock seniors working within these teams. If you have the passion for geology, love working in the field and sharing your skills with team members, then contact Digirock on (08) 9477 3747 or email your CV to peta@digirock.com.au to start mapping your preferred geological career path. n

Sex

in Someone Else’s City When it comes to your health, it’s always better to be safe than sorry

W

hen you’re travelling overseas, the last thing you want to have to worry about is your health but imagine coming home after that well earned break with more than just a tan and souvenirs. According to Trish Langdon, Executive Director at the WA AIDS Council, Australians are at a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases when travelling overseas. “Australia is pretty fortunate when it comes to the level of aids on a population basis, but that’s certainly not the case in other countries,” Trish said. “Australians love going to places like Asia, Europe and the USA and it’s important to understand HIV epidemics are different in different countries.” Trish said there are many factors of a holiday that can often cause travellers to lose their inhibitions and do things they might not usually do. “Often people go on holiday to a sultry, sunny climate and have a relaxed time, get a tan and end up feeling more attractive,” Trish said. “Even when people are travelling for work, they might find themselves in a bar late at night talking to people and the opportunity to have a casual fling might arise or there are

guys that travel overseas to support sporting teams and there can be serious egging on to take part in daring behaviour. “These can all be factors in having unsafe sex overseas.” But not to worry, it’s not all bad news. According to Trish, the message is simply that it’s important to keep up safe sex practises when overseas “Condoms can be used as a protection against STIs as well as a contraceptive so it’s really double protection,” she said. “It’s really just important that people are confident with how to use them and how to negotiate using them – to be open to discussing that with your sexual partners.” Trish said another important factor in practising safe sex is to plan ahead. “If you ‘get lucky’ and you haven’t got anything on you, in the heat of the moment you might be tempted to throw caution to the wind,” she said. “Taking Australian made condoms with you is great because they’re reliable and don’t break.” If you do end up having unprotected sex overseas, Trish says all is not lost. “Obviously if people do go overseas and

they meet someone and they want to take the opportunity, just have a comprehensive sexual health check up when you return,” Trish said. “It will put their mind at rest and even if they have picked something up, they can get treated and not pass it onto anyone back home.” But it’s not just unsafe sex that Trish recommends avoiding - there are other aspects that go hand in hand with overseas travel that need to raise alarm bells in traveller’s minds. “With things like tattooing and piercing, we have very high standards here in Australia, so travellers need to know that there may be associated risks in getting it done overseas in terms of a blood born virus,” explains Trish. “And the same goes for drug use - don’t share needles, no matter what because you just don’t know what’s going on overseas and you need to be mindful and be aware. “When you travel overseas, most people have a heightened awareness in terms of their safety - like not walking around with their wallet out or going out alone at night – and the same goes for your health, you need to have that same heightened awareness.” n

Safety Briefing Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. Seatbelts Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. Tray Tables/Seat Backs Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. Smoking Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. Carry On Luggage If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. Talk Back with Occupation: Radio Announcer Favourite travel destination: I really loved Magnetic Island! The people were really friendly, the water was amazing and we literally did nothing but eat and drink! What a fabulous holiday. Not to mention the cute little ‘mini moke’ we fanged around in for the 10 days. It’s a mini car! Travel tip: Packing neatly doesn’t always work. I get way more stuff in when I shove it in! Seriously though, know where you

Camilla Severi are going before you get there. It’s horrible when you arrive and you spend the first two days not knowing what to do or where to go or eat. A few hours research can go a long way and will help you familiarise yourself with local customs too! Most embarrassing travel moment: When I got “pharaohs curse” (rampant diarrhoea) on a tour In Egypt and they wouldn’t let me off the bus as we passed through a town to go to the toilet, so I had to beg the bus driver to stop in the middle of

the “white desert” so I could go to the toilet. Too much information? That’s what the people on the bus said! And by the way, the white desert... not so white now! What are some exciting things coming up for you? I’m really excited about having another bubby in the not too distant future, maybe doing some more TV bits and bobs, but mainly I just love radio. It’s so much fun and am having the time of my life!
