country road trip in a recreational vehicle - and neither had my partner, Ray. We’ve never even owned one. But by November of 2020, neither of us had left the state of Texas in months and I was getting the travel bug bad. Mostly, I was missing my son, Ari, and son-in-law, David. We had not seen them since Christmas 2019 in Santa Fe. During the course of the year they made a move to Santa Monica, California and I decided it was time to see them. We just weren’t quite ready to get on a plane yet. But one morning, I woke up with a thought: let’s rent an RV and head west! Thank God, Ray is an adventurous man used to my wild ideas - especially the ones we’ve never done before. After some research on rentals, parks and, of course, mapping out our route, we set our sights on finding the perfect vehicle nearby. Amazingly, the first one

we saw was the one we rented. The interior was decked out in a Southwestern style that felt like my own home. Jason, who owns the RV, even knew Ray when he refereed Austin high school football and baseball games. That just sealed the deal. We rented his 2018 Winnebago “Zeppelin” Class C. That RV was beautiful and actually pretty easy for both of us to drive. In fact, it drives as a 26 footer, but when parked, opens up to a 32 footer. Through mapping out our route, I found exciting places to stay along the way. Our adventure was 3,500 miles round trip. It would take about 16 days to complete. For now, I’ll share our journey from my home in Buchanan Dam, Texas to Malibu, California, and the places in-between and back in a three part series. Sit back and enjoy the ride! In order to prepare ourselves to be an RV couple, we rented the 2006 road comedy, RV, starring Robin Williams. It was hilarious! By the end of the movie we both knew who had what job on the journey. While we’d split the driving, I was in charge of the food, ambiance and booking the RV parks. He was in charge of plumbing and all things mechanical. Make sure you watch the movie. We were fortunate to pick up our RV the night before heading out. That gave us time to get comfortable with all the nuances that come with such a vehicle. We packed up our clothes and other essentials that night and got good rest. Tuesday morning, November 3rd, we loaded our food and provisions and headed west.

the back and has plenty of closet space, a separate shower area and a bathroom. The kitchen had everything we needed and a great dining area with enough space for four people. The first time I drove the RV, it certainly took a little bit of time to get comfortable, especially when turning. I did get the hang of it and actually enjoyed my time as captain. Reservations were made at Van Horn RV Park. The beauty of the mountains can be enjoyed from the campsite, which is located in the desert outside of town. During that first long drive we began getting used to the noises of the RV. We also learned very quickly how everything needs to be in the right place, with drawers locked and dishes secured. The Van Horn RV Park is a sleepy little community. It turned out to be the perfect place to learn how to set up and tear down the camping features. This is something you have to do every time you do an overnight. The first evening, we were a bit slow and had to consult our checklist. As our trip went on, we became pros. That night we went for a walk around the park, watched a beautiful sunset and ate dinner at Penny’s Cafe, which is actually located on the property. It was some good, down home Texas fare. We both ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes, country gravy and green beans. It was delicious. This had been a good first day. Our plan that following morning was to get up at the crack of dawn. We had an eight hour stretch to our next destination, Phoenix, Arizona. Thankfully, our bed was super comfy and the fresh Texas air made for an amazing first night’s sleep in our home away from home.

In order to truly enjoy our trip, we made sure not to drive over 8 hours each day. We wanted to take our time. We both prefer leaving early in the morning and setting up “camp” before dark. Our first day’s drive was around six hours, putting us in Van Horn, Texas around 4pm. We knew this route well, as it takes you to Marfa, Texas, one of our favorite West Texas towns.

We ended up sleeping in a bit Wednesday morning, and enjoyed a cup of coffee before heading to Phoenix. The goal was to arrive in the RV park around 4 pm. This way, we’d have plenty of time for dinner. That evening, friends of mine were visiting Scottsdale from Beverly Hills. It was such an unexpected gift to be able to connect with them

and finally introduce them to Ray. Our route to Phoenix went through both El Paso and Tucson. We enjoyed the ride. We made a couple stops to stretch our legs and wander through roadside antique stores. The RV’s kitchen was super convenient for making lunch and snacks along the way. To pass the time, Ray and I took turns driving every two hours. We also listened to our favorite classic rock and country music. When we finally made it to the Phoenix Metro RV Park we still had time to chill before Ubering into Scottsdale to meet Jenifer and her husband, Michael, for dinner. One of the cool things about the RV life and RV resorts are that many are active communities and have extensive amenities. The Phoenix Metro Park is for a mature crowd of 55 and over. That means one person has to be at least 55 to stay or live there. Some of the amenities and activities at this park include a swimming pool and spa, indoor and outdoor recreation, plus a spacious clubhouse with planned events. We didn’t stay long enough to enjoy any of these perks, but it was good to have options. When driving a Class C RV without towing a vehicle, you may not want to pack up and drive to a restaurant knowing you’ll have to come back to the site and hook up again. That’s why we took advantage of a ridesharing service in order to easily come and go. That night we met our friends in Scottsdale at the Old Town Tortilla Factory. What a gorgeous place. It is located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale in the charming art district. Built from a historic 75-year old Scottsdale adobe home, Old Town Tortilla Factory has a timeless charm and distinct atmosphere exemplifying the essence of the Southwest. Their food was delicious and the company was amazing. We spent a couple hours kicking back with margaritas and sharing both memories and delightful food. Our dishes included the shrimp diablo sautéed with mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, onions and garlic in red chile

butter, served with toasted bolillo bread and chips and salsa fuego. For dinner Jenifer and Michael each had the red chile pork chop. Ray had the achiote ribs, while I enjoyed the pork verde. I am so grateful I could connect with my Priestess Sister on this road trip for such a fun and memorable evening. I actually married her and Michael years ago in Cincinnati and love them both dearly. Next stop Malibu! The drive to our destination of Malibu, California was 7 hours away. We planned to stay three nights at the Malibu RV Park. Our goal was to arrive around 4 pm, requiring us to leave around 8 am. The drive is fairly easy and very beautiful. On our way to the beach, we drove through Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs. We packed a lot in the past 3 days, so we were ready to set up a permanent camp for a while. We wanted to enjoy the perks of RV life, Southern California and spend time with the boys. I cannot tell you how exciting it was to make it onto the Pacific Coast Highway, Hwy 101! The traffic, no doubt, was less due to COVID, however driving the RV in Los Angeles still required skill and patience. Thank God for Ray! Malibu RV Resort was fabulous. Our experience there was fantastic. We parked our RV on a cliff overlooking the ocean. And we had views of the mountains. We were so excited to actually make camp for three days that we set out all of our chairs and fairy lights to create a little sanctuary. We had flowers at our site which attracted butterflies and hummingbirds. Sitting there and watching the ocean both night and day was such a pleasure. My son Ari and his husband live in Santa Monica. On our way to our site we picked up Ari at his place and he helped us check in and set up. After David finished work he made his way to us. We enjoyed an el fresco dinner and wine. We caught up and planned the next couple of days with them in Southern California and our adventure to Napa with them as well. This was one of our planned side trips before returning back to Texas.

Centennial Celebration 2021-2022

So far Ray and I had adapted to RV life pretty well. My biggest issue, however, was the showering. I did not take any in the RV. Instead, we used our shower space for wine and beverage storage. Ray used the RV Park facilities and I sort of winged it. But more on that later. The Zen moment of this leg of the trip was finally making it to Malibu. We enjoyed our dinner together as a family, all while overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I got to sleep every night to the sounds of the waves crashing on shore and rock. Next issue, we will be sharing our explorations in Southern California and our trip to Napa. Sending you much light, love and timeless journeys!

Our Spiritual Winter Evolution by Cynthia White Flower

“To every thing there is a season…’” so Ecclesiastes 3 in The Holy Bible tells us. Nature provides seasons to help us to evolve spiritually to fulfill our ultimate reason for living- to consciously return to God. We are here to realize that God is within us. We are here to discover that, as we look into the eyes of an individual, we are simultaneously looking into the eyes of God. Further, we are here to learn that we are the “God’s” of our destiny – the creators. Ultimately, as our realization evolves, we find that we are not separate from one another, but we are all One. All that we think, say and do affects the whole world, like a ripple in a pond, but the pond is infinite and the ripple keeps going. The seasons provide examples of where we are in the cycle of God realization and what to focus upon next. They show us what practices are supported by this special time of the year. In the winter, the cold encourages us to go within.

8

Meditation is suggested. The great Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda tells us that, “You will never find joy to equal that which comes when the thoughts are silent and your mind is tuned to the peace of God.” The weather that forces us indoors supports our introspection and solitude. We can meditate on a mantra to take us higher. Sit quietly. Take a deep breath and focus your sight in between your eyes. Say a mantra that will support the moment steering you away from wandering thoughts and taking you into a higher sense of awareness. Let’s say “Ohm Shanti Ohm” (pronounced “Aum shaun tee Aum.” Say it over and over. Feel the great peace over take you. “Ohm Shanti Ohm, ohm shanti ohm, ohm shanti ohm.” The “Om” is reputed to be the absolute first sacred sound heard at the creation of the universe. Sanskrit, the language of this mantra, is said to have been formed from the noises emanating from the objects and from the

Centennial Celebration 2021-2022

universe. According to ancient scriptures- it is through sound that all was created. “Ohm” when said correctly, reverberates from your pelvis to your head, unlocking the throat chakra, the energy center in the neck, connecting the divine (your head and crown chakra) with matter (the body) for better communication with self, spirit, others, the Divine. According to the World Pranic Healing Foundation, “The mantra “Ohm” purifies our mind and soul and takes our incarnated soul closer to our higher soul.” “Ohm Shanti Ohm, ohm shanti ohm, ohm shanti ohm.”

Master retreats where you can study and become more enlightened as you rest.

“Shanti” is the Sanskrit word for peace, rest, calm, bliss and tranquility. According to the World Pranic Healing Foundation:

Yogi Yogananda says “The first proof of God’s presence is an ineffable peace. This evolves into joy humanly inconceivable. Once you have touched the Source of truth and life, all nature will respond to you.” The Omar Khayyan reminds us to “Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” In the Winter solitude, may peace prevail in our hearts creating harmony and joy as we welcome the New Year!

“The first “Shanti” will free us from physical burdens. It filters negative thoughts related to our etheric body like disabilities, diseases and illnesses. The second “Shanti” cleanses our mind and soul. We can shed negative thoughts like jealousy, hatred, anger, worries from our mind. This takes us a step close to our higher soul. The third “Shanti” is meant to protect us from accidents and natural calamities. The mantra can give us peace and free us from stress, particularly when we are feeling depressed, frustrated, angry and all other sorts of negative emotions. This will create a field of calmness around us and help us to meditate properly.” “Ohm Shanti Ohm, ohm shanti ohm, ohm shanti ohm.” The season speaks to us through the days that are shorter, darker. Nature tells us to rest- to go to bed earlier. Being rested improves our memory, inspires creativity and helps our body to heal. When we feel good, we react to life from a positive state of well-being.

“Love is the energizing elixir of the Universe, the cause and effect of all harmony,” so Rumi reminds us. When we feel loved, we feel secure. When we love, we step outside of ourselves to become selfless, and true. As we allow ourselves to love, making the choice to see that there are reasons behind all behaviors, we grow the compassion of the Christos, the Christed One, love personified.

Since there is less light, we are shown that more light is needed in our lives. While we are sleeping, we can go to the Ascended Master’s Retreats to become more enlightened. 4 Steps to

Improved Immunity by Baker Chiropractic

Find yourself getting frequent colds? Your immune system may not be functioning as it’s supposed to.

BTestimonial aker Chiropractic The Chiropractic Care and Supplement Recommended by Dr. Baker Dissolved My Kidney Stones. There Are Natural Solutions to Avoid Surgery!

A properly functioning immune system is necessary for optimal health. But how do you get one? Follow these do’s and don’ts to help your body fend off sickness and make room for health. 1. DO take probiotics. Probiotics are the good bacteria that go into the digestive system and aid in the digestion of food. Research has linked the strength of the immune system to the quantity of probiotics inside the stomach. 2. DON’T subject yourself to sugar. Sugar is what many people know as an anti-nutrient. I am talking about the refined simple sugars that contain no nutrients and, upon entering the body, take nutrients away from the body’s storage to be metabolized into the system. Once these storehouses are depleted, then we have created a mess for our body and our immune system faces a greater challenge in fighting off colds and flus. 3. DO get nervous system checked. Your nervous system (brain and spine) controls every cell, tissue, organ, and organ system within your body. The key here is to be sure that your spine is in its proper alignment so it can send out clear signals to the rest of your body. Give our practice a call to schedule your next visit!

Lori Hoffman and Dr. Patrick Baker Dear Dr. Baker, I would like to thank you, Dr. Patrick Baker, for helping with not only with my ongoing back pain but for also offering a solution to my ten week battle with kidney stones. I first sought out Dr. Baker’s help because I threw out my back and could barely move. I was desperate to find relief from my pain as our family had tickets for the All-Star Game festivities. I needed to be on my feet and mobile for the entire week. The treatment I received for my back and shoulder offered relief faster than I expected and I was able to attend all of the events and I could not thank Dr. Baker and his staff enough.

4. DON’T let stress get to you. The more stress you subject yourself to, the weaker your immune system becomes. When our body is under stress we produce more cortisol, which is a stress hormone that increases blood pressure and blood sugar leading to a weakened immune system. The key here is to practice stressrelieving techniques such as meditation, yoga and exercise.

Then at the beginning of September I was rushed to the Emergency Room with severe pain in my left side. The emergency room doctor said I had a 5mm kidney stone and advised me to make an appointment with an urologist but I would have to wait two weeks. The ER supplied me with pain medication and Flow-Max medicines to assist with passing the stone.

Please contact us by calling (513) 561-2273 or schedule an appointment on-line by visiting our website at www. bakerchiropractic.org. We will help!

The stone did not pass in those two weeks, so the doctor suggested that I give it two more weeks to try to flush it out and if it did not pass by then I would need two rather expensive surgeries.

Centennial Celebration 2021-2022

After the second urologist appointment, I mentioned everything I was going through to Dr. Baker at my very next back therapy session. When we were discussing the options that were presented to me and the cost of the surgeries and Cat Scans. I wasn’t sure if he could offer any assistance but he was more than willing to listen when in reality “I was just hoping he could do something to help”.

So, Dr. Baker saved me from having two surgeries, the cost of the hospital stay, follow up visits and any further doctor visits. The CT scan at the ER alone was $3,186.00, so I can only imagine how much two surgeries would have cost. I can’t thank Dr. Baker and his staff enough for all the help they have given me. My back has felt so much better, I am able to help landscape our yard, tear down our shed and haul away the wood with my children and husband.

Dr. Baker said there was a kidney stone supplement pill that might be able to help in lieu of the expensive alternatives. I figured what I had nothing to lose, as my trust in Dr. Baker was growing with every visit.

Thank you, Lori Hoffman

I followed the directions with the supplement taking one week’s worth and went back to the doctor and to my surprise they could no longer find the kidney stone on the x-ray. I also had a followup visit and they still could not find the kidney stone. I was elated.

It is Time

by Cynthia M. Brown

It is the holiday season again. I just finished that horrible year of firsts. My mother died last November so we did the first holidays without her; first Mother’s day without her; first birthday without her; first anniversary of her death. It was a hard year. I think it is like that for most people. Everything feels not really new but foreign or somehow out of balance. I don’t know that this year will be much different. There are still times when the absence of my father still feels out of balance somehow, I guess that is part of the reason I recently changed jobs. Well, I have a serious nut and peanut allergy which forced me to get serious about making a change. I had too many exposures and got very sick after one exposure. A job opportunity hit my inbox and I took it. It is a very new chapter for me. The work is very familiar. I am back in the food industry. I do some food preparation but mostly it is customer service. I supervise the closing shift in a retail food establishment. What is new for

12

me is that for the first time since I was 19 years old, I am not the boss. I have only three responsibilities: I make sure guests are taken care of. I make sure the food is taken care of. I make sure the place is clean and buttoned down at close. It is an odd place to be for me. I am not in charge. I do not hire or fire. I do not make schedules or do inventory. The reduction in my stress has been incalculable. I sleep better. I am just much more relaxed in every way. I have more time for my home life which includes going back to school for my masters which has been a dream of mine for decades. My sister says life is full of seasons. My season for leadership, at least in the form I have known for almost 40 years is over. This is a new time; a new season; a new beginning. Missing my mother, the void created by her death; the lack of balance it has created has made it necessary

Centennial Celebration 2021-2022

It is Spring. Since my mother died, everything reminds me of her. She loved spring. She was an avid gardener, self-taught and extremely gifted in creating outdoor spaces of beauty. Everywhere, I see her and hear her wit and wisdom. I am older now and I have come to appreciate something about her I simply took for granted my whole life.

for me to create a new way of looking at my life. Time is very fleeting. Both of my parents died at 80. I will be 60 very soon. I have never thought of my work as a career with a capital “C”. I have always wanted to work to live but I reflect now that in many ways, the nature of the work I did actually meant I was living to work, 60-80 plus hours each week. Now, I work 40 hours a week and I am paid for every minute I am there. My time has value to my company and, ironically, it has made me value it more. I am looking at my life and discarding those habits of a stress filled, time starved existence. I am having my home redone. I have a new roof; new windows ordered; bathrooms and the kitchen are being updated. I have painted rooms and created a study and music studio. Now, I have time for those things. I even have time to study and complete my masters degree. One of my great loves is teaching and now as I near retirement, I will have time to teach a few classes at a local community college. Every time I think about making a commitment now, I have a new habit. I ask myself how this commitment is of value to me and my family, not just those asking the commitment of me. I try to be conscious of how these decisions affect my own life. I do not want to be selfish or lacking in compassion. I want to be more self-compassionate and more mindful of my own needs, and those of my family. I ask myself, what is my time worth. How will this commitment affect my home, my health, my existing commitments. As this holiday season approaches, I am so very aware of time; how fleeting; how precious. It is one thing we can never make up. I want to make the most of it. I want to create balance in my life. I ponder the gifts I give this year and keep coming back to the same idea. I want to be here for my family. I want to share time and experiences with those I love. For the first time in nearly 40 years I do not have to ask forgiveness for working on holidays, on days off and late into the night. That is a true gift to me and those I care most about. I wish you a season of peace, balance and precious time to be with those you cherish.

How Can Conscious Parents Create

and Keep Life Balance with Children? by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE

In your life B.C., Before Children, it seemed easier to get and stay in balance. You could get plenty of sleep, make time for self-care, and meditate every day, if you wanted. Most of the time, you felt grounded and centered, in the present moment, and in a space of calm inner peace. As a conscious parent, you still have good intentions, but creating and keeping balance seems to take more effort and it feels like you are always one step behind. For example, most mornings go like this: You wake up tired, because you stayed up late for some me-time and got up extra early to meditate. As you sit there, you either doze off or your mind runs through the list of all you have to do. You’d like to work out, but get interrupted so often you give up and resolve to just take the stairs and do squats and stretches throughout the day. After getting kids on the bus, you work hard all day at the office or at home with the little ones, barely taking breaks. After school, you drive each child to their after-school activities. Dinner is rushed and bedtime is too chaotic and late to accommodate calming, snuggly pillow talk. You wouldn’t trade your children or your life, but do feel guilty that you aren’t more calm, centered and present. You don’t want to be one of those perfect super-hero parents, or let your kids run wild while you zone out in the lotus position! You just want to live a more balanced life with children. Well you can, and the first step is to get into the “Balanced” zone with your parenting style. A parenting “style,” is your overall way of parenting, based on your belief system about what parents are “supposed” to do and be, which then drives your decisions, thoughts, words, and actions. Over the past 75 years, as recently as 2016, parenting styles research has identified five parenting styles

14

and their predictable outcomes. Two are controlling, two are permissive, and the one that gets exclusively positive long-term results is what The Parent’s Toolshop® has called the “Balanced” parenting style for over 25 years. Human evolution has not changed much in that time. Children still go through the same developmental stages, in the same order, from simple to complex, in eight domains (i.e. cognitive, emotional, social, etc.) at their own rate and style. Still, the most important factor in their development is having involved, responsive parents. So it’s wise to avoid being too hands-on, controlling and interfering and too hands-off, chanting, “All they need is love,” and leaving children to “figure things out for themselves,” with too little guidance, boundaries, or structure. The Balanced parenting style is a holistic, integrated approach that uses common sense logic, emotional intelligence and intuition to parent. For example, Balanced parents: • Provide love, guidance and support, without taking over or over-controlling. • Respond to children’s needs without coddling, spoiling, or over-indulging. • Build self-esteem, not egotism or people pleasers, and engage cooperation, by fostering self-motivation, without bribes, stickers or threats. • Offer choices to children within bottom-line limits, so they don’t become spoiled or demanding. • Teach children skills and provide some freedom, within structure and routines, so children can practice the skills safely and feel secure having consistency. • Acknowledge children’s feelings and ask openended questions, so children learn how to solve their own problems and make decisions responsibly. • Understand the cause of misbehavior, show children

how to meet their needs through positive behavior, and use discipline not punishment. •… And much more. Within the Balanced parenting style, you can also following these simple, practical tips for making day-to-day life with children more balanced and enjoyable: • Use good time management skills, to create flexible structure in your family routines that allow for down time, family time, and snuggle time. • Limit extra-curricular activities to only two per season, and rotate them throughout the year. • Limit screen time to no more than an hour a day, especially for children ages 2-5, or it starts literally rewiring and even damaging the developing brain. Interact with each other instead. • Learn stress-reduction techniques you can use almost anywhere, anytime, such as:

Finding Rewards

in the Still Silence of Meditation by John Van Auken

In all the conditions of life that we face, learning to tune to center in the midst of those conditions is a very valuable tool. Meditation helps you create your own personal sanctuary. When things get challenging, a meditation practice can help you find and keep your balance.

Cayce recommends we meditate daily, with the best time to meditate being 2 a.m.! Meditating is more important than sleep. Consider setting an alarm for 2 a.m. to practice meditation and see if you have a deeper, more reflective, twilight-like experience. For, know that the answer to every problem, to every question, is within self. For there, as given, He has promised to meet with thee.

Edgar Cayce’s readings say that during meditation, your better self comes through. The more you meditate, the better you become (in more ways than one).

-- Edgar Cayce reading 2438-1

Years ago, I started practicing meditation with a group at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. During my first meditation with the group, I recall thinking, “There’s nothing in here but me! And for twenty minutes?!” But I kept practicing. Within months, I started noticing changes, and sensing another dynamic reality, and that I was getting closer to what I was seeking.

Meditation and reflection is not thinking; rather it’s getting to a place beyond the self-conscious mind. Thinking cannot get you beyond thinking. Only in stillness can you get there. There is a magic in stillness. As you learn stillness, you can move into a place very close to your original self, the origin of your being. True reflection is connecting with the origin of your being and of life, which leads to the awareness of infinite oneness and the source of all life.

The type of meditation Cayce encouraged is holistic, in that the goal is to bring the body, mind, and soul into conscious union. He began with physical techniques of meditation. Then he would move to the mental and attempt to make shifts in consciousness to connect with the spiritual. But that is advanced meditating.

Eastern teachings reference the bird of paradise, where one wing is training, but the other wing is the right heart. A bird cannot fly with one wing, so you need both training and your heart in the right place. Success is achieved more quickly this way.

Still the Body, Daily For those new to meditation, (Edgar’s son) Hugh Lynn Cayce would often recommend simply getting used to sitting still for 15 minutes. First, still the body. Once you master that, begin to work on stilling the mind. In Zen Buddhism, there is a technique called shikantaza, which literally means “just to sit”—which is hard to do. Edgar Cayce says falling asleep can be a natural result of attempting to “go within,” because once the system shifts, that is very close to a sleep state. But you have to go through and beyond the sleep state to a “conscious sleeping state.”

Silence the Mind

Buddha emphasizes meditation. In the New Testament, Jesus goes alone to be in prayer. If you read about how he prays, there is a period of silence; a period of receiving. He receives messages during periods of silence. Silence then, is important to miracles happening. Then, listen—listen! For it is not in the storm, not in the noise, but the still small voice that rises within. -- Edgar Cayce reading 826-11 Reap the Rewards Meditation provides nourishment in a different but perhaps more important energetic way than even food does. Meditation stimulates the pituitary gland to rejuvenate the body, and I assert will leave you feeling

younger. Meditation is important to overall health and can be used to improve healing. In the midst of all that goes on in this physical life, meditation allows us to touch the original dimension of our existence. When I am with a group of people who are experienced meditators, I feel like I am with my soul group. I have used meditation in facing most all of life’s challenges, and I believe it’s been key to being a better and balanced person. I am confident, as Cayce was, that meditation can help you become centered in the various conditions life brings. And as ye open thy mind, thy body, thy soul, ye will find Him there; not in some other place, not as from without. For He is closer than thyself. For He would be thy very self. MEDITATE upon Him and what He would have thee do.

-- Edgar Cayce reading 833-1

A Time of Joy and Peace!

by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger

Words like “joy” and “peace” have personal meaning to us. As individuals, we experience them very differently, and our experiences shape what emotions we feel when we think of them. Now, as we focus on decorations and gifts and holiday gatherings, joy and peace can easily fade to the background of our minds and hearts. We have talked many times about how our animals are living expressions of what they feel. When your dog sees you walk through the door, they may rush to you with wagging tail and smiling face as if to say “you’re here, I am so happy to see you!”. Once you finally get to sit down, your cat may crawl up on you and begin purring and doing “happy feet” on your lap… the cat version of “you’re here, I am so happy you are here with me!”. If you have horses, being greeted with a head over the stall door with pricked ears and a throaty whicker is wonderful. Our animals

20

are present with how they feel in that moment, they are not afraid to make sure we know they are happy to see us. For many of this, this evokes a feeling of joy and love in us, if we take the time to stop and experience the moment. For our animals, there is no holiday season. They just know that we humans become very preoccupied, we spend less time with them, and we simply may forget to acknowledge their presence when we walk in the door. They do not understand this, and will often begin to act out in a way to get our attention back. For example, a dog that you thought had learned not to jump up on you when you come home may suddenly start that behavior again (“HEY I AM HERE”). A cat may get more insistent about walking all over you when you try to lie down to go to sleep, demanding that you give them attention first. Your tension about what you haven’t gotten done yet for

Centennial Celebration 2021-2022

the holiday will transfer right to your horse, and he may be more jittery or may even back away from you when you reach out to touch him. There are other extreme behaviors that may also surface – a cat that begins not using the litterbox, or who begins clawing on the furniture for no apparent reason. A perfectly housetrained dog may suddenly start having accidents in the house. The first thing to do, of course, is to make sure there is no physical issue by contacting your veterinarian. If no physical issue is found, then it is quite possible that the problem is behavioral. The first step is to think – have you rearranged the furniture because your cousins are coming for the holidays? Have you gotten luggage out in preparation to travel home for the holidays? Did you forget to clean out the litterbox? Are you leaving the dog alone more as you go shopping after work? Have you spent TIME with your pets or have you been rushing around busily getting ready for the holiday? Think about it. We are very quick to blame the pet for misbehavior. In reality, we need to look at ourselves and our behavior first. Let’s bring the discussion back around to joy and peace. Most of us take great joy in spending even a few minutes with our pets. We are happy and we feel loving and loved. Often this translates to a strong sense of wellbeing, and we are at peace with the world for a few moments. For us, having our dogs pile on us when we are sitting on the couch helps us feel very loved and quietly joyful. There is nothing quite as peaceful as having a purring cat lying on you when you are in bed and snuggled in for the night with a good book. For me, just standing quietly in my horse’s stall with my hand on her lowered forehead brings a sense of utter peace, contentment, and connection. Taking a few moments each day to connect with our pets will help us experience the true meaning of this season – love, joy, and peace. We would also like to share our annual tips for the holidays for those of you who live with cats and dogs. For those who have visitors coming to your home for the holiday, please explain to your pets who is coming and when. Make sure that your visitors understand that they must be careful that no animals are close

by when going in and out of exterior doors or gates. Make sure your shy cats and dogs have a place to be in the house away from active children and loud adult conversation. Be especially careful getting your pets in and out of your vehicle if you take them somewhere – make sure dogs are securely leashed with properly adjusted collar or harness before opening a vehicle door. Remember – your pets take their cues from you. If you are anxious and worried, your pets will feel less safe and may try to run away. They may also react by wanting to stay closer to you. In either case, be prepared with awareness and compassion. While we love sharing special tidbits of our holiday meal with our pets, make sure that you don’t give them chicken or turkey bones, as these can be harmful to them. Finally – We wish you and yours a very joyful, peaceful, and loving Holiday Season!

Universality of DNA by Jill Mattson

It is fascinating to learn that at least some of the building blocks of DNA - that all life on Earth is based on - are formed extraterrestrially in outer space. Is this evidence that life of Earth originated elsewhere in the universe? At the very least, we share a profound connection to other life in the universe. Since we share our DNA building blocks, we necessarily share biological fundamentals and (at least some) similarities in body and brain. (However, recall that we share close DNA designs with animals on Earth as disparate as monkeys, whales, and snakes...) A report published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported that eleven out of twelve carbon-containing meteorites studied contained the nucleobase Adenine. The nucleobase Guanine was also found in other meteorites. Further, numerous amino acids and other complex organic compounds that could be raw materials for life formation have been found in other extraterrestrial samples.i The presence of key components of DNA in outer space makes a strong argument for the widespread existence of life throughout the universe. It also reflects the nearmiraculous DNA design and suggests that at least a slice of all life in the universe is closely related to the life forms that we know on Earth. Perhaps we should play Mattson’s DNA Dreams, featuring the vibratory signature of DNA, through a radio telescope to the stars... to invite a connection. By listening to/and being immersed in specific frequencies and matrices of sounds, our bodies, our energies, even our mental and physical states are impacted profoundly. The evidence is overwhelming! Specifically, in regards to Jill Mattson’s new work DNA Dreams - we invite the open-minded listener to embark on a unique adventure in Sound - focusing on the DNA components found everywhere in your body. Consider that new cells are formed throughout your body continuously. DNA is the blueprint for life. DNA contains all the genetic material in a cell that is passed on when replication and reproduction occurs.

22

Accurate, healthy cell production relies on the precise replication of new cells driven by DNA processes. Does pristine DNA the ward off mutations and degeneration? Most experts agree that aging is due to mutations and the production of rogue cells. This is the beginning of most cancers. Can you reinforce and stabilize the essential systems in your body: DNA and RNA, by listening to its exact sounds? Everything has an energetic aspect and hence a frequency signature, which is characteristic of that thing. Exposing a substance or living cell to “pure” frequencies – that make up that substance – can strengthen and reinforce the substance – even at an atomic or molecular level. The DNA molecule is a remarkable - and a universal thing. Earth humans may have been “engineered” based on a universal DNA structure - however, our “Creators” did not want to empower us with the full potential of what DNA can do. (A large portion of our DNA is called DNA, as we don’t understand what it does.) Our DNA creates genes to form livers and brains ... but we don’t have genes for extremely long lives... or genes for telepathy... however, some humans experience these things from natural selection occurring in their genes. They develop telepathy and other physic powers. It is all there available in our DNA - it is just not arranged and activated to give humans some of the “near superpowers” that our creators have realized.ii New cells are formed throughout your body constantly. Accurate, healthy cell production relies on the precise replication of new cells driven by DNA processes. With sound can we keep our DNA pristine and functioning perfectly to the ward off mutations and degeneration? Most experts agree that aging is due to mutations and production of rogue cells… this is the beginning of most cancers. Can accurate sounds, reinforce and stabilize the most important systems in your body: DNA and RNA? Joel Sternheimer, is a French physicist who discovered that “while a protein is being assembled, the amino

acids’ movements are considerably slowed down… so a vibration or a frequency can be calculated…and transcribed into acoustical note….”iii Sternheimer found that the vibration of each amino acid in a plant can be assigned a note. If you play the notes, corresponding to the amino acids, back in the order that they are combined in a protein, a melody results. Amazingly when Sternheimer played the “amino acids’ songs” back to the subject plant, he documented up to 250 percent accelerated growth; also, resilience to drought and disease was improved.iv “The sound sequences used to stimulate plants were not random, but carefully constructed melodies. Each note was chosen to correspond to the stimulation of protein molecules. When the sound is sequenced in just the right order, they create a tune which is unique and harmonizes with the internal structure of the plant. Each plant has a different sequence of notes to stimulate its growth.”v “According to New Science ‘Sternheimer claims that when plants hear the appropriate tune of a protein, they produce more of that protein. Sternheimer also writes tunes that inhibit the synthesis of protein.’ In other words, undesirable plants (weeds for instance) could be inhibited with sounds, not pesticides.”vi “According to Sternheimer’s research, each molecule in our body can be reactivated through resonance if it ‘hears’ its corresponding molecular melody.”vii There has been a tremendous amount of fascinating work done using Sound Frequencies with living organisms to wondrous ends. The frequencies of proteins make a huge difference to the physicality of plants. Christmas Blessing It was Christmas Eve, my husband was out of town on a work assignment. I was feeling an emptiness in the house since my pet had passed the day after Thanksgiving. I told myself I would never have any more pets because I

24

had my sweet cat for 15 years as a constant companion, I knew that no other pet could fill that void, even though I found myself longing for a furry friend to dwell in the house once more. I did not need to make myself busy, I was so excited to get the last minute things done and needed to hurry because of family coming in for the Holiday’s, I could not wait to see everyone. Our usual Holiday travel on Christmas Eve was to see my Dad and Stepmom, I always looked so forward to it because my Dad is the best Father anyone could ask for and he always has a great sense of humor, especially around this time of year. It was a rainy but somewhat an unseasonably warm night out, my Dad greeted us at the door and said, “Your gift just arrived, it is sitting on the porch.” I looked around and

That doesn’t make one good or bad — just different. As I change on my spiritual journey, I also discover my taste in music changes. I prefer quieter music such as piano solos with simple tunes as opposed to a multitude of scales and chords. Once again, that doesn’t mean my tastes are the right ones and someone else’s tastes are wrong. Differing tastes simply add to the symphony of the Universe. The same could be said of religions. Tastes change with time.

seemed a bit confused that he stood smiling and did not hand the gift to me, he simply pointed and said there it is! I could not see a thing and was thinking the whole time, it must be some sort of a joke because my Dad was fun loving and liked to kid around sometimes. He kept pointing towards the side of the porch and I saw too tiny eyes sparkling in the light.

What I enjoyed when I was younger has been replaced with different tastes. And, that’s okay.

I was excited and amazed when this little kitten just stood in front of me, she was so precious and beautiful. My Dad told me someone had dropped her off on their doorstop just hours before I arrived.

At first I did not believe him, but he went on to tell me he knew it was suppose to belong to me because of it being on his doorstep and he had been thinking of getting me a kitten for Christmas. I declared her as my pet that day and what a blessing she has been! She has been by my side through good times and situations that have been stressful for me. It is underestimated how much having a pet can balance your life and fill a void that you never thought could be possible, she is part of our family now, we all adore her, especially at this special time of year!

Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home.” Different faith experiences define “home” differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.

Every Path Leads Home:

I grew up with the Beatles and Elvis. I was a fan of both, but I also enjoyed many styles. For the most part, I didn’t consider one form of music good and another evil, although there were times when my religion would judge some forms of music as being “of the devil.” It’s odd how religions can take something that seems as if it should be neutral and give it a judgment value. We had religious music, and we had worldly music.

A Time in Space

by Sarah Honu-Heart Gallant

I’m honored to be filling in for my friend Patti Lightflower. Her last article referencing the Japanese Art of Wabi Sabi, the mending of broken pottery with gold was such a powerful description and metaphor of a life progression, a beautiful philosophy of owning, as inherently valuable, all we experience, and a crossroad that I feel so many of us find ourselves on at this time. It’s a threshold of rebirth, claiming and integrating, embodying and expressing, the treasures gleaned upon the journey as Patti’s article so eloquently expressed with magical sprinkles of devotion and commitment. Imagine traveling the golden rivers of our own body temples, vessels that have been mended with self-compassion, love, and wisdom over time and lifetimes. This practical magic of authentic evolving wholeness reaches within and moves without as one breath, deeply peaceful, grounded, transcending space and time. On this page, I share a collage card titled Earthing. Creating these collage cards are a part of my own process of reaching within, moving without, and although you can’t see it in the image, the cards are all trimmed in gold . This one was made after a powerful integrative experience I had on a trip to Maui in 2014. The writing came spontaneously shortly after its creation, and feels to parallel what Patti shared last issue summed up in the last line of her poem “I am a Universe of I Am’s” Warm Greetings from Deep Space! It doesn’t really matter whether Inner or Outer - it’s really all ONE isn’t it? We are multidimensional Star beings just like you. We are in you, you are in us - our collective consciousness exists in every flower, rock, tree, water droplet and indeed in the very ground you walk upon on Gaia and in every heavenly being and body. We have long resided as image in a stack carefully and lovingly preserved for a special collage cardmaking moment, one that would be certain to make you smile. Yet our Essence is everywhere you look.

26

We make ourselves more tangibly known to you at this time to say that we come in Peace... ...In DEEP PEACE from DEEP SPACE and with ONE VOICE that encourages us all to deepen our connection to each other and to all living things in whatever form that may take for each of us - for surely in doing this, beginning in small ways, all together we are co-creating a new collective form; a Star Ship whose capacities we’ve only just begun to imagine. Whilst we are imagining, let us not forget that we as individuals, and our ways of contributing and working, may be very different yet are equally valuable. We are world-bridgers of sorts, rainbow riders and funloving spirits who raise a hand in friendship and cooperative alliance and in a high-five appreciation of YOU. We hear the Music of the Spheres and join the Universal Dance contributing our Steps and our Notes to Freedom’s Song. Standing Open, we allow our growing awareness of the Interconnectedness of all of Life to inform us and permeate each of our Hearts, and from the One Heart space we are committed to Spreading all the Love that we can. Will you join us as we glide on Resonant Sparks and Rainbow Arcs, Singing in Praise of Mother Earth while poised at Heaven’s Door? Although we understand the gravity of these times, we also plan on having some serious fun along the way! – Sarah Honu-Heart Gallant

New Year’s Traditions There are many traditions around the world celebrating each New Year by bringing in the best intentions for success all year through! Below are several examples of these special celebrations for ringing in the New Year! Greece: A cake is baked to honor St. Basil, inside the cake a silver or gold coin is placed. A slice of cake is given to each family member, the one who has the coin will be blessed with luck during the coming year.

place, people of all ages with bathing suits plunge into the icy water, which surrounds Vancouver, during the winter. Ireland: One ancient Irish custom on New Year’s Eve was to take a large loaf of bread or large slice of Christmas cake and hammer it against the door or window. This was done to drive out any misfortune and, allow happiness to enter. Portugal and Spain: The people of the Iberian Peninsula pick and eat twelve grapes from a bunch just as the clock strikes twelve on New Year’s Eve. This tradition is said to ensure twelve happy months in the coming year. United States: New Year’s Eve in the United States is a major social event, party goers stay out until dawn. The traditional New Year ball is dropped every year in Times Square, New York city at the stroke of midnight.

Feel Better Fast!

Netherlands: Many cultures believe the shape of a ring is good luck, for this reason, the Dutch often eat donuts to ensure good fortune for the coming year. Scandinavia: Some popular food items are consumed for good luck, like herring, accompanied by carrots and cabbage for assurances of wealth in the coming year. In some areas of Finland, on New Years Eve, a bucket of snow is brought in and tin metal is melted on the stove for each family member. After it is melted for that person, they throw it quickly in the bucket of snow. Whatever the shape the metal forms, represents a symbol of what your future will be for the coming year. Canada: The traditional polar bear swim takes

Gare luten-Free Diets Beneficial for Many by Dr. Joeseph Mercola Gluten-Free Diets Are Beneficial for Many — Not Just Those With Celiac Disease In recent years, the benefits of a gluten-free diet have become widely recognized and, according to recent research, people are embracing gluten-free in ever-growing numbers, even though the number of Americans diagnosed with celiac disease has not increased since 2009.1,2,3,4 In 2009, an estimated 0.5 percent of Americans were on a gluten-free diet. By 2014, that number had more than tripled, to 1.69 percent. Meanwhile, the number of people diagnosed with celiac disease remained fairly steady, declining only slightly, from 0.7 percent to 0.58 percent. Gluten-free diets are particularly popular among Caucasian women and younger adults between the ages of 20 and 39 — many of whom do it simply because it makes them feel better. It’s well worth noting though that while gluten-free has many advantages, just because a food is glutenfree does not automatically make it healthy. There are plenty of gluten-free junk foods out there.

by celebrity endorsements and an increasing number of books linking wheat and gluten to a wide range of health problems, from gut dysfunction and allergies to neurological diseases and autoimmune problems. This includes The New York Times Best Seller, “Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar; Your Brain’s Silent Killer,” written by Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist, in which he reveals how processed grains contribute to dementia. My own book on this subject, “The No-Grain Diet,” was published in 2003. While still in medical practice, I recommended eliminating gluten as a first line intervention before I would further fine-tune a patient’s diet to address their specific health problems. As the title of my now 13-year-old book indicates, I believe most everyone would benefit from avoiding all grains, not just gluten, as doing so well help you burn fat much better. Plus, healthy fat is a far cleaner and more efficient fuel for your body. Despite the prevailing skepticism, studies are now confirming that many people do indeed experience adverse reactions to gluten even if they test negative for celiac disease. This suggests gluten-sensitivity is a real problem,6 and that gluten-free diets may benefit many — not just those with celiac.

Just because a food is gluten free doesn’t make it a health food, just as a food sold at Whole Foods does not make it a health food. There are plenty of lousy fake foods in both categories.

Celiac Disease Versus Wheat Allergy and Gluten-Intolerance

For most people, drastically cutting down on your net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) is the key to optimal health. This includes but is not limited to grains (not just wheat, as all grains will spike your insulin levels and contribute to insulin and leptin resistance).

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder. People with celiac suffer severe gastrointestinal (GI) reactions and malabsorption of nutrients in response to gluten found in wheat and other grains, and a strict 100 percent gluten-free diet is critical for these people.

Doing this will help your body burn fat rather than carbs as its primary fuel, which helps optimize your mitochondrial function and boost weight loss.

Celiac disease is typically diagnosed by measuring the presence of autoantibodies such as transglutaminase 2 (TG2), which is thought to be the most sensitive marker for celiac.

Is Going Gluten-Free a Pointless Fad?

Many others have wheat allergy or some level of gluten intolerance or sensitivity, and fare better on a glutenfree diet even if they don’t have celiac disease. If you’re

Some doctors dismiss gluten-free as a mere fad,5 fueled

allergic to wheat, consuming it will result in an immune reaction that can be diagnosed by measuring antibodies called IgE and/or other immune system markers. Food intolerances, on the other hand, are typically related to a lack of a specific enzyme to break down the food in question. Food intolerances tend to generate fewer symptoms that are slower in onset, and can therefore be more difficult to diagnose. Diarrhea or constipation, bloating, headache, anxiety and fatigue are common symptoms of a food intolerance, but may not appear until hours or even days afterward. Gluten sensitivity IS real though, researchers say, and may affect up to 6 percent of the population. Gluten Sensitivity May Affect a Majority of People Gluten is a protein made up of glutenin and gliadin molecules, which in the presence of water form an elastic bond. Gluten can be found in grains other than wheat, including rye, barley, oats and spelt. Gluten can also hide in processed foods under a variety of names, including but not limited to11 malts, starches, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), texturized vegetable protein (TVP) and natural flavoring. If you do a search of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, you will find that gluten-containing grains have been linked to dozens of adverse health effects12 and adverse modes of toxicity. Topping this list is neurotoxicity, and in his book, “Grain Brain,” Perlmutter specifically looked at the neurological impact of gluten (wheat) and casein (dairy) on both our brain and autoimmune diseases. He also believes gluten sensitivity may be involved in most chronic diseases, because of how gluten affects your immune system.

zonulin in the intestine in response to gluten. This protein, found in wheat, barley and rye, makes your gut more permeable, which allows proteins to get into your bloodstream. This sensitizes your immune system and promotes inflammation and autoimmunity. In the press release announcing the publication of his new book, “Gluten Freedom,” Fasano said:14 “We’ve shown now that gluten sensitivity actually exists. It’s moved from a nebulous condition that many physicians dismissed to a distinctly identifiable condition that’s quite different than celiac disease. Gluten sensitivity affects six to seven times more people than celiac disease.” Mercola, J. “Gluten-Free Diets Are Beneficial for Many — Not Just Those With Celiac Disease” Retrieved September 21, 2021, from http://articles.mercola.com/ sites/articles/archive/2016/09/21/gluten-sensitivityceliac-disease.aspx ____________________ 1 JAMA Internal Medicine September 6, 2016 [Epub ahead of print] 2 Reuters September 6, 2016 3 WebMD.com September 6, 2016 4 Huffington Post September 8, 2016 5 Huffington Post September 7, 2016 6 Mother Nature Network September 8, 2016 11 Celiac.com, Unsafe Gluten-Free Food List 12 PubMed National Library of Medicine. According to Dr. Alessio Fasano, director for Celiac Research and the chief of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital, gluten sensitivity may be far more prevalent than previously suspected.13 He estimates virtually all of us are affected to some degree, because we all create something called
