ACTIVE ADVENTURES HIKING

Gede Pangrango National Park • Taman Nasional Gunung Gede Pangrango Most hikers’ destination in Gede-Pangrango National Park is actually Gunung Gede (elevation 2,958 m). The hike to Gede summit around the towering cliffs of its crater is a wonderful hiking experience, and offers extensive views of Pangrango, Salak, the Bandung area and on clear days you can see Gunung Karang in Banten Province, Jakarta, and the coastline of West Java. You can see Sumatra if you’re lucky. Pangrango itself is a dormant volcano with a forested summit. For fit hikers a trek to both peaks can be done in a weekend with only one night’s camping. Mount Gede and Pangrango is suitable for beginners or foreigners as a “familiarization hike” before exploring other mountains in Indonesia. By far the most interesting incident in my visit to Java was a trip to the summit of the Pangrango and Gede Mountain. - Alfred Russel Wallace -

ACTIVE ADVENTURES HIKING

Mount Papandayan Located about one hour’s drive from the town of Garut with some of the most spectacular scenery and varied in West Java. Its active crater attracts a lot of tourists. Mount Papandayan has several summit craters and is very much alive.Exploring the active crater is easily done in less than an hour. Further on, there are several peaks of a seemingly similar height, the principal and outer two being named Papandayan and Puntang, with various minor tops between them, one of which is the very rarely visited highest point in the mountain massif called Gunung Malang. Papandayan is a fascinating volcano filled with small wonders such as boiling mud pools, sulfur deposits, fumaroles as well as a crater lake. Spending time at this volcano was like being on another planet, the landscape didn't look like it belonged here on Earth.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST The crater itself and various wild animals and species of birds. RECOMMENDED PACKAGE TOUR _ 2D1N, start/end Mount Papandayan car-park ACCOMMODATION Tent INCLUDES Tent, sleeping bag, mattress Meals & refreshments Transportation: to/from Papandayan car-park Guide & porter

It was pitch black outside, save from distant glow of the moon and the last of the fireflies returning to their nests. It was a little over four in the morning, signaled by echoes of the final verse of the dawn prayer coming from the mosque. Morning mist settles, revealing the once again quiet Citalahab Village. The chilly air cuddles every last being, including roosters and goats. The smell of pandan leaves in the steam tells Ibu Kokom that the rice is almost ready. Just in time for her two daughters to leave for school. She sent them off with their lunches, they kissed the back of her hand. The lazy sun creeps in the distant, slowly painting the shape of the mountains with brilliant orange. Time for Ibu Kokom to put her rubber boots, straw hat, and woven basket for collecting the tea leaves with the others.

ACTIVE ADVENTURES CLIMBING • SWIMMING • SNORKELING

Krakatau Nature Reserve If you visit Krakatau and climb the active volcano Anak Krakatau today, you won’t believe that it was capable of causing so much damage and destruction in 1883. Especially when the “child” is calm and not “coughing”. But the child is of course smaller now, compared to the then huge Krakatau. Anak Krakatau, the active volcano, is surrounded by 3 islands, Rakata, Panjang, and Sertung. When approaching the area, you get the impression that the child is guarded from 3 directions. Quite chilling, but amazingly beautiful. The trip to Krakatau offers climbing Anak Krakatau, swimming and snorkeling near Rakata, and camping at Rakata.

SEE & DO Carita Beach, Krakatau area (Anak Krakatau, Panjang, Sertung), snorkeling and swimming near Rakata coral reefs, underwater biodiversity, monitor lizards

The trip to Krakatau is relatively short, one day, but very exciting !

INCLUDES Tent, sleeping bag, mattress (for 2D1N camping) Meals & refreshments Land transportation to/from Carita Fastboat Carita to/from Krakatau Snorkeling equipments Guide

“If I should go back to my country now, for one reason or another, I am satisfied. I am already satisfied because of today’s Krakatau Trip. The rest of my Indonesia Trip starting tomorrow I consider it as a bonus”. A testimonial from a very excited Danish tourist who travelled with us to Krakatau, after a One Day Krakatau Tour.

RECOMMENDED PACKAGE TOUR _ Full / one day tour _ 2D1N, camping at Rakata or Anak Krakatau _ Krakatau package tour can be combined with Ujung Kulon package tour ACCOMMODATION Tent (only for 2D1N)

Ujung Kulon National Park • Taman Nasional Unjung Kulon Ujung Kulon National Park forms the largest remaining lowland tropical rain forest ecosystem in West Java. Moreover, it is an ideal habitat for the rare animals like the Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceos sondaicus sondaicus). Some 700 species of plant are well protected, and about 57 of them are categorized as endangered species. This Park is an attractive ecotourism site, with impressive natural phenomena of fast flowing rivers, waterfalls, white sand beaches, thermal springs, sea gardens, and cultural/historical remains (a statue of Ganesha). Taken together, they create an unforgettable experience for the visitor. CYCLING inside the Ujung Kulon National Park is not possible. Nevertheless, “last miles” before reaching park’s entrance gate offers stunning scenery: beaches of Selamat Datang Bay to the right, ricefields and Mount Honje to the left. This badly maintained road is ideal for off road cycling while enjoying the mystical view of Ujung Kulon. "Paddling the Cigenter River was an unbelievably fantastic experience. It's remarkably peaceful and lovely here, yet full of primeval, Jurassic Park stuff—rain forest and trees that have fallen into the river. The rich colors of the place are so beautiful, and the strong tropical sun creates great pools of mottled light on the river's surface." - Martin Westlake -

ACTIVE ADVENTURES CLIMBING • CYCLING

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

For off road cycling lovers, not only recommended but a must, to ride and explore Bromo by bicycle !

If the spectacular Apollo 11 moon landing was a hoax, then it must have been shot on Bromo. A lunarlike landscape of epic proportions and surreal beauty, the volcanic Bromo region is one of Indonesia’s most breathtaking sights. Rising from the guts of the ancient Tengger caldera, Gunung Bromo (elevation 2,392m) is one of three volcanoes to have emerged from a vast crater, stretching 10km across. Flanked by the peaks of Kursi (2581m) and Batok (2440m), the smouldering cone of Bromo stands in a sea of ashen, volcanic sand, surrounded by the towering cliffs of the crater’s edge. Just to the south, Gunung Semeru (3676m), Java’s highest peak and one of its most active volcanoes, throws its shadow – and occasionally its ash – over the whole scene. CYCLING. Usually tourists are taken to Bromo area from their lodges either on a 4x4 jeeps or on a horseback. We suggest exploring the Bromo area by bicycle. Not an easy ride, but very challenging and exciting.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST Malang and Batu (cities), Cemoro Lawang village near Bromo, Welirang and Arjuno mountains. At BTSNP: Bromo, Kursi, Batok, Semeru, Tengger sea of sand. RECOMMENDED PACKAGE TOUR _ 2D1N start / end at Cemoro Lawang ACCOMMODATIONS Villas at Cemoro Lawang village near Bromo INCLUDES Accomodation Meals & refreshments Transportation: to/from Cemoro Lawang. In Bromo: 4x4 off-road jeeps Guide If a landscape was ever needed to demonstrate the meaning of the phrase desolate beauty, then this is surely it. Rugged, barren volcanic peaks, gravel plains and that sea of sand. Truly unworldly.

ACTIVE ADVENTURES CLIMBING

Mount Rinjani National Park At 3,726 m, Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia, dominates the landscape of the relatively small island of Lombok. Within its huge 50 km² caldera sits the crater lake Segara Anak (Child of the Sea). Eruptions within the caldera have formed a new small cone called appropriately enough, Gunung Baru (New Mountain). Segara Anak has a natural hot spring. The mountain and its satellites form the Mount Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani) officially 41,000 hectares within the park boundaries and a further 66,000 hectares of protected forest outside.

ON THE WAY Sembalun Lawang Village, savanna, pinetree forest, deers, monkeys, hot water spring/waterfall, Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls, Rinjani’s summit, Segara Anak Lake, Mount (volcano) Baru Jari RECOMMENDED PACKAGE TOUR _ 3D2N for fit hikers, start / end at Senaru Village _ 4D3N a more relaxed hike, start at Sembalun Lawang Village end at Senaru Village ACCOMMODATION Lembah Rinjani Villa & Resto Tent INCLUDES Tent, sleeping bag, mattress Meals & refreshments Transportation: transfer to/from Senaru Village or Sembalun Lawang Vilage Guide & porter

Few sights are as breathtaking as the sudden appearance of Gunung Rinjani's main crater at the end of the first day of this walk. Add in the even more astounding view from the volcano's summit and the serene beauty of being in the crater itself, and you've got a world- class trek that I can't recommend enough,

This isn't an easy walk, especially the last stretch up to the summit; the scree is exhausting to walk on and if you want to catch the incredible sunset from the top you have to start walking in the middle of the night. The summit is optional, but if you can manage it, you won't regret it. - Long-Distance Walks with Mark Moxon -

TEASER CYCLING

Lombok • Sumbawa • Tambora “Lombok is Bali 20 years ago”, that’s what they said 10 years ago. Today, Bali is still Bali and Lombok is still very much Lombok. A lot of similarities in its natural beauty, but Lombok offers a more quite, pristine, and calm surroundings, actually suitable for honeymooners. Many tourists visit Lombok without really reaching the mainland itself, but stay at Gili islands. Next to Lombok there is another bigger but more quiet island, Sumbawa. Unspoiled beaches, hills, and the legendary volcano that blasted in 1815 and changed the climate in Europe, known as “the year without summer”, Gunung Tambora.

CYCLING LOMBOK. Seeing Lombok by bicycle is another experience. A backroad cycling adventure upnorth along the Senggigi coast , or down to central Lombok and further to Kuta Lombok beach. The east coast of Lombok is also an untouched beauty. Ride through Sasak villages, ricefields, ride to the foothills of Rinjani, stop by the waterfalls. SUMBAWA • TAMBORA • BICYCLE vs HORSES From Lombok, cross to Sumbawa by ferry and explore by bicycle from the west coast to the north coast of central Sumbawa. Race against horses at the savanna of Tambora. The reward is climbing the Tambora. The crater rim of Tambora is one of the world’s most fascinating places and the views at sunset over Gunung Rinjani (Lombok) are fabulous. As for the incredible size of the crater itself, photos cannot really do it justice.

ACTIVE ADVENTURES ABOUT RISKS AND DANGERS

Climbing mountains in Indonesia is not to be taken lightly. Very low temperature at the top, sometimes down to 4 degrees Celsius, thunderstorm, trail become invisible after heavy rain, fallen tree blocking the trail, unstable volcanic soils, deep and deadly ravines, and not to forget wild animals.

Many experienced hikers can climb Gunung Gede all the way up to the summit from Cibodas in a few hours. They call it a “walk in the park”. There are some solo hikers who climbed Rinjani in one day, not to the summit but only to the crater rim, starting at 4:30 am in the morning and reached the crater rim at 9:00 am. These stories may have inspired us all, “yes, we can do it too”. But there are also many stories about solo hikers who were caught up in a very heavy rain and got hypothermia on these mountains. They luckily survived after being rescued by mountain guides, porters, or other climbers. HOW TO CLIMB A MOUNTAIN "Some mountaineers are proud of having done all their climbs without bivouac. How much they have missed ! And the same applies to those who enjoy only rock climbing, or only the ice climbs, only the ridges or faces. We should refuse none of the thousands and one joys that the mountains offer us at every turn. We should brush nothing aside, set no restrictions. We should experience hunger and thirst, be able to go fast, but also to go slowly and to contemplate.” Gaston Rébuffat (1921—1985)

We wish you a rewarding, experiential, and infinite Infiniti Adventures with us. See you up there !
