NO TIME TO PARTY Bars bitter over booze board plans

Some owners think the hour may already be too late, but the Liquor Licencing Board says it’s thinking about midnight closing laws on New Year’s Eve. The holiday falls on Saturday night this year, and restaurant and bar owners are recalling the disaster that ensued in a similar situation six years ago when laws requiring midnight closings and a halt to alcohol sales were strictly enforced. This time, however, Board Chairman Mitchell Welds says he is thinking about making arrangements to enable late openings, but has not made any decisions yet. “It’s already too late,” said Reno Mancini, manager at The Wharf, which sponsors one of Cayman’s biggest New Year’s Eve parties each year. “The Power To Make a Difference – Through Action” was the theme of this year’s Silent Witness march through George Town, intended to draw attention to domestic violence. The march, organised by the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW) began at the Glass House lawn, and ended with a special presentation in front of the Legislative Assembly. The Silent Witness movement began in 1990 when a group of writers and female artists at a Minnesota college decided it was time to speak out about the escalating number of women killed by domestic violence in their area. Since then, the movement has become international, and is observed in 47 US

states, ad well as 18 countries around the world. The marchers carry red silouettes made out of foam plastic, which represent those who have been killed at the hands of a husband or partner. During the presentation in front of the Legislative Assembly, BPW club member Linda Mcfield said: “We need to ensure that more people know and understand that domestic violence is not a private matter, it is a critical national problem that affects us all, in every community, every workplace, and every school. “Men can also be victims of domestic violence, but very often they are too ashamed to tell others about their problem, as they think they might lose face by doing so. BPW President Heather Anderson

spoke about the effect domestic violence and abuse has on the children who grow up there: “They see the physical abuse, they see the tears, they see the pain, they feel the hurt,” she said. “Kids don’t miss much, but what many people don’t realise is that when kids see this type of thing it changes them forever. “Abusers are cowards and bullies, and they often commit their crime when they know no one else is around. They use fear to keep their victims silent, and if people don’t stand up to them the behaviour continues. We need to stand up and support those being hurt and encourage them to get professional help that is available on the Island, with such services as the Crisis Centre, among others. To the victims of abuse I say, ‘take your life back.’ If you’re currently in a situation where you know you’re not being treated right, please don’t think that there aren’t any options. Hon Mike Adam, Minister of community affairs, Gender Affairs and Housing said: “Domestic violence is an infection that has weakened the underpinnings of our society structure. It affects our homes, schools, work places, communities, our economy, and our families are often torn apart by this horrific crime.”

Local bar owners call for late opening Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Continued from front page “We need to prepare in July or August, and I have been asking the board since April or May: Can I be open? Can I extend? I have talked to [Premier] McKeeva Bush about it, and at this point, he said, he hasn’t made any decisions,” Mr Mancini said. Less worried, Handel Whittaker, owner of the beachfront Calico Jack’s, said he would take advantage if New Year’s Eve extensions became available, but, if not, he told iNews, “we are not going to cry about it. “I don’t think there’s much we can do about it,” he said, “but it’s not necessary to do everything they do in New York. We don’t need to bring in parties all night. We don’t need to open until 3am. “Cayman is a religious society, and I don’t have a problem closing at 1 o’clock at night. One of the things that ticks me off is that we allow any Tom, Dick and Harry to come in and dictate what we should do. If the board is mindful to extend the hours, then that is something we will all apply for, but if not well, I don’t have a problem with it.” Mr Welds, citing 2005, said the problem “always happens when New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday”, and that “licenced establishments” had “already been advised that this happens and that they have to close at midnight. “However,” he said, “the problem is

being sorted out at the moment. “We are looking at the regulations and if there is a way around for the licenced establishments. We are aware it’s a problem,” he said, “and are trying to find how the board may be able to accommodate them. “We are looking to see about extending the hours into New Year’s Day, but they would have to get approval. He declined to indicate how many hours the extension might encompass, but said the board’s quarterly meeting was scheduled for December when “we may have some information for them”.

While one bar owner, asking anonymity, said a 2am deadline was under consideration, Mr Mancini said December “information” was far beyond the time needed to plan, although 2am, he said, was “plenty -- I don’t need more than that, and a lot of people would be ok with that.” But at the moment, especially with no planning and no decision, he said, “it means everyone has to leave at 11:30. I already have 90 people booked, but they are going to have to go home.” Mr Mancini lamented what it meant for the Cayman Islands and its tourist industry, particularly in a recession, to turn away visitors. “We need to hire a DJ, order fireworks, party favours, champagne, wine, food. These things all come from overseas. We need a band, and they can’t just be sitting around wondering what they are going to do. They’ll go elsewhere. People are planning their vacations, they plan a year ahead of time. “It’s not just about parties. Tourists come to our beautiful island and we tell them nothing is open? You can’t close a country at 11:30 at night. “I spend thousands of dollars, and everyone makes money. This means, though, that government doesn’t get the duty fees, the freight is not moved, and employees don’t work. This is a business issue,” he said.

Israeli soldier emerges from 5 years of captivity MITZPE HILA, Israel (AP) — Gaunt and pale, Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit returned home Tuesday after more than five years in captivity, freed in a lopsided exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners that could greatly complicate Mideast peace prospects and strengthen the Islamic militant Hamas. The swap set off massive celebrations in Israel and the Palestinian territories, where crowds in Gaza called for more kidnappings of soldiers, chanting: “The people want a new Gilad!” The 25-year-old Schalit’s poor

condition, a jarring appearance by masked Hamas men during his release and the prospects of a strengthened Hamas bode poorly for future relations between Israel and the Palestinians. By winning the release of hundreds of militants accused in notorious suicide bombings of the Palestinian uprising a decade ago, Hamas reinforced its message that Palestinian goals are advanced most effectively through violent struggle, and not the moderate approach of diplomacy favored by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. “Israel was forced to pay the price,”

Hamas’ supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, boasted in a meeting in Egypt, where he greeted 40 freed prisoners who were immediately sent into exile under the terms of their release. To Israelis, the return of a young man whose plight had become a national obsession brought a welcome lift.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding to resign Sunday KINGSTON, (AP): Prime Minister Bruce Golding is expected to formally tender his resignation to the Governor General on Sunday while a new prime minister is sworn in. This will take place at a special ceremony at King’s House, commencing at 4:00 p.m. The education minister Andrew Holness is to be sworn in as Jamaica’s ninth Prime Minister at 4 o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Golding presided over his final Cabinet meeting today and used the occasion to thank his ministers for their support and hard work under his leadership.

He noted the Government had overcome significant challenges over the last four years but emphasised that much remains to be done to accelerate the pace of economic recovery in order to be able to tackle the country’s urgent social needs. Golding also noted that while some elements of the government’s reform agenda had been completed, other important items are yet to be implemented. These, he said, were at an advanced stage of preparation and urged his colleagues to complete the process as a matter of urgency. The prime minister also thanked the

Cabinet Secretary and the staff of the Cabinet Office as well as the Permanent Secretary and staff of the Office of the Prime Minister for their support during his tenure.

Dalai Lama prays for Tibetans who self-immolated DHARMSALA, India (AP) — The Dalai Lama fasted and led prayers Wednesday to honor nine Tibetans who set themselves on fire in protest against Chinese rule, while Beijing criticized the Tibetan spiritual leader’s support as inciting “terrorism in disguise.” The 90-minute-long service at the Dalai Lama’s Tsuglakhang Temple, in the northern Indian town where he lives in exile, focused on the monks, former monks and a nun who have self-immolated since March in a restive Tibetan area of western China that has been under martial law-type police controls. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Aged in their late teens and twenties, at least five died of their injuries, while the condition of the other four is not known. At the service, the Dalai Lama led rhythmic prayers for the dead and suffering as Tibetans tended butter lamps. The newly elected prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Lobsang Sangay, urged China to stop its tight controls on religion in Tibet and called on the United Nations to send factfinding teams to the Himalayan region. “We would like to appeal to the Chinese government to immediately stop its repressive policies in Tibet, and

to resolve the issue of Tibet through peaceful means,” Sangay said. The commemorations underscored how the immolations served to draw attention to the situation in Aba, a Tibetan community that has been a flashpoint for Tibetan unrest.

A good sport

Being “a good sport” means you are gracious when you colin.wilson@ieyenews.com win and gracious when you lose. Both are difficult but more so when you are accustomed to winning and unexpectedly you lose. Here, in Cayman, we don’t have too many sporting wins because of our small population and the facilities for our young athletes woefully small. We are accustomed to being losers and, as a population, we just shrug and hope we can do better next time. We are gracious because we are used to it. But we do have some sporting heroes. Chantelle Morrison, Cameron Stafford, Cydonie Mothersill, Ronald Forbes, Mark Letterlough and Charles Whittaker, are a few names that come to mind, who have achieved winning success. They have all been gracious in their wins and are certainly ‘good sports”. It was with some pride to learn of the achievement of our sensational swimming brothers, Brett and Shaune Fraser to be placed 1 and 2 in the same race (200m freestyle final) at

the Pan American Games this week. Not only did Brett get a gold medal (Cayman’s first ever in the Pan Am Games) but broke the Games record that now stands at 1min.47.18secs. Congratulations. Last, but by no means least there is our under 20 female football (the proper football game) team. The Cayman Islands national men’s football squad have been lacking in all departments, not scoring goals, some members not turning up for practice because they want paying to practice, and showing very little pride in being selected to play for their country. Our young girls; however, have shown them how it’s done. They beat Suriname in Suriname 4-0 in their CFU World Cup qualifier. Listen to what 15 year old Shanelle Frederick from Cayman Brac had to say after the game: “It’s an honour to put on the Cayman Shirt and play with these girls. They are all my sisters and we are a family.” Now if those words do not make Shanelle a “good sport” I cannot think of any others that are higher. Let’s all be “good sports”.

CIASA congratulates gold and silver medalists: Brett and Shaune Fraser Statement from Tom McCallum, President CIASA As the wonderful news broke of the Gold and Silver medals of Brett and Shaune Fraser at the Pan Am games a massive outpouring of emotion burst forward from so many as if a dam had been breached. Tuesday October 18th 2011 was a truly momentous day in the history of Cayman Swimming. With hearts full of pride and joy the Board of CIASA joins Cayman’s Swim Family and indeed our whole country in congratulating Shaune and Brett Fraser. These two brothers and indeed their whole family have committed so much, and for so many years, to the vision of achieving this level of success, they deserve all the praise that is now flooding in their direction. Their hard work, commitment, dedication and humility; along with the outstanding

support of their family - Jim, Laurice and Kyle - is truly representative of the very best of Cayman! At this time the focus is on these two remarkable young men, so we will not list the many that have supported them on their journey to this point. We will however mention Coach Dominic Ross who not only recalls the night’s achievement as the “newest, proudest swimming moment in his life” but who has also, along with his family (albeit indirectly), shown commitment and dedication to the sport of swimming. The list of hugely committed and passionate individuals and organisations in Cayman and beyond is lengthy. You know who you are, and you have the thanks of a grateful country and swimming

community too. Whilst we take a moment to celebrate, the focus will soon shift to a certain swim meet in London in 2012. All of the Cayman Swimming and sporting family will continue to support them in the year ahead as they journey to the Olympics. We wish all athletes continued success in these Pan Am Games including swimmers Lara Butler and Tori Flowers and those representing the Cayman Islands in other disciplines as well. We know all of Cayman’s athletes at the Pan Am Games will today be walking with just a little more “swagger” today and rightly so! Congratulations Shaune and Brett. We look forward to welcoming you home soon.

Developments at the Office of the Auditor General The Auditor General, Alastair Swarbrick has announced that his office have launched a new website and issued the details host of programmes. The new OAG website, www. auditorgeneral.gov.ky, provides information about the mandate and work of the OAG and is much easier to navigate than the old site. Mr. Swarbrick is excited that the new site will be more current and relevant for anyone needing information about the Office’s work. Deputy Auditor General Garnet Harrison, who has spearheaded the work, stated that “there is a lot of information on the new website previously unavailable to the public except through freedom of information requests”. As he is the official responsible for Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, Mr. Harrison believes the new site will ensure the key provisions of the FOI Law will be met more efficiently and believes it will be an example of good practice for other public bodies to follow in the future. For example, the Office has made public the management team remuneration, key payments and contracts, employee travel expenses, the register of interests for key employees, and the hospitality

received and given. In addition, visitors to the website will be able to find copies of the Office’s press releases and audit reports dating back to 1995 and get to know us better through our Quick Guide to the Office. In an effort to provide useful information to other officials in the Cayman Islands Government, the website will have information about good practices for the management of the public sector as well as links to other websites that provide information that could assist public sector managers. Mr. Swarbrick is also pleased to announce that the Office’s recently completed Strategic Plan – Making a Difference – and the planned programme of performance audits are now available on the website. “Since being appointed Auditor General in July 2010, I have spent a lot of time talking to Government officials and the public to understand how my Office can provide the government with an effective independent public audit function. I believe the Strategic Plan captures the essence of this effort and will be a good base for how we want to go forward in the future. We desire to make a difference in how Government operates by promoting

good governance, transparency, and accountability in the use of public funds.” Said Mr. Swarbrick. With respect to the programme of performance audits Mr. Swarbrick stated that “the purpose of this plan is to inform all stakeholders of the performance audit reports that we plan to issue over the next 18 months, along with other areas that we plan to keep a watching brief on and which we may report on in the future. I also hope that it will help stimulate stakeholders to contribute ideas about the areas my Office should be auditing.” Public sector employees and the public are invited to meet the Auditor General and his staff, and have a “tour” of the new website at an open house to be held on November 2, 2011 between 1.00pm and 4.00pm at the Office of the Auditor General, 3rd Floor, Anderson Square, 64 Shedden Road.

National Energy Policy Committee previews work to Chamber The National Energy Policy Committee (NEPC) will provide business leaders with an overview of its work to date on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at 3.00 pm. Committee members, including public and private sector stakeholders, have been working for over a year to prepare a national policy to guide the energy sector through 2032. They are scheduled to discuss their mandate and findings so far with Chamber of Commerce members, as part of that organisation’s BE INFORMED series of meetings, at the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Centre conference facility in Governor’s Square. NEPC Chairman Cline Glidden says the committee is well aware of the challenges that the Cayman Islands faces with regards to providing an energy product that is to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

both affordable and secure. “Our vision is to encourage a diversified sector that is supported by informed public behavior. We believe this will help to strengthen our economy in a number of ways: by reducing the cost of fuel; generating a demand for new products and services, and creating more jobs than are lost in the transition from fossil fuels. We would, of course, also be reducing the Cayman Islands carbon footprint,” Mr Glidden comments. The development of a sustainable energy policy speaks to at least two key drivers in the Future of Cayman partnership between the Chamber and Government: building a smarter infrastructure and diversifying the economy. Members of NEPC committees and subcommittees include: the Ministry

of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture, Department of Environment, Department of Environmental Health, Planning, Lands and Survey, the National Roads Authority, Electricity Regulatory Authority, Petroleum Inspectorate, Chamber of Commerce, Caribbean Utilities Company, Cayman Brac Power and Light, Cayman Contractors Association (CCA), Cayman Society of Architects Surveyors and Engineers (CASE). BE INFORMED is sponsored by Steppingstones. Persons can register to attend the event online at www. caymanchamber.ky. The draft national energy policy will be submitted to Cabinet in the first quarter of 2012 after which the committee will begin a period of extensive public feedback.

The Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation launched its third annual awareness campaign at the Harquail theatre, with a drama skit and poetry reading focusing on this year’s theme of sexual harassment with the slogan, “I am not the one who should be ashamed.” Through the year-long campaign, the Foundation hopes to raise awareness of the issue, while giving victims the confidence to speak out. The campaign also aims to educate the public as to exactly what constitutes sexual harassment. This year’s campaign will involve television and radio appearances and various community-outreach

initiatives to raise awareness about sexual harassment. “We are aware that sexual harassment is a prevalent issue in the Cayman Islands,” said Mr Rayle Roberts, Chairperson of the Foundation, “and we are hoping to get the public talking about it so that victims learn that their suffering should not go unreported. Sexual harassment, in any form, should not be accepted in our community,” The campaign also urges the public to support legislation that seeks to prevent sexual harassment and speak to their employer about implementing a policy against sexual harassment in the workplace. Kevin Creary and Dara Flowers-

Burke were MC’s during the launch evening at the Harquail Theatre. There was a poetry reading by Nasaria Suckoo – Chollette, and also a musical performance by the UCCI Choir. There was also a drama sketch put together by members of Women’s Media Watch which had the aim of drawing attention to some of the issues surrounding sexual harassment. The sketch involved three characters working in a typical office environment. There was Mr. Brown, the boss, and two employees named Aliyah and Roberta. feel uncomfortable. “You can’t take it seriously…men will be men,” she answers. “You like it here, don’t you? You don’t want to be regarded as a troublemaker, do you?” Roberta continues. During the next scene, Mr. Brown is talking to Aliyah: “You can get on here, if you use all your assets,” he says. The spotlight then picks out Aliyah, who is also clearly feeling uncomfortable, “I’m confused,” she says. The next thing we see is Roberta approaching Mr. Brown for a “little talk” about her colleague. She thinks it’s foolish for Mr. Brown to waste his time with his unwanted advances

towards Aliyah, but the twist is she is not confronting him, rather she is making it clear that she is more than willing to play along with his game instead. The final scene is where Aliyah is dancing to some music in the office – thinking she is by herself, but Mr. Brown starts joining in with the dance, beginning to touch her as he does so, but its clear that his advances are unwelcome. At that point the play stopped, and the houselights went up as the actress playing Roberta asked the audience a series of questions about the sketch. “What is it that makes Mr. Brown feel that this sort of behaviour is all

right?” she asked. Answers ranged from the ‘attitude of other men,’ to, ‘the attitude of her colleague,’ to the prevailing culture. “What was Aliyah feeling?” she asked next. Actress playing Aliyah answered according to her character’s feelings: “Confused, and under pressure.” The obvious power difference implicit in the boss and employee relationship, it was agreed, was a significant factor in the inappropriate nature of Mr. Brown’s advances. Other answers were: “It was unsolicited. It makes the other person uncomfortable.”

Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir,

Recently, for the first time in the long history of the Courts of these Islands, comments have been made publicly which bring into question the integrity of decisions of the Courts. While the great majority of the responses which have followed in the media (most notably, perhaps, by Mr. Ramon Alberga QC) identify the inappropriateness of such comments, persistent debate in the media and in the wider community calls for a response from the judiciary itself. This letter offers what I trust will be accepted as an appropriate response. Confronted by the current unprecedented wave of armed violence, it is entirely natural that everyone will be concerned for the loss of our common sense of security – that sense of security that few places could offer as steadfastly as did these Islands. Our common security will not, however, be regained by futile and misguided attempts to deflect blame away from one arm of law enforcement to another. The rhetoric that seeks to blame acquittals by the Court for criminal conduct is not only misleading and misguided, it is also itself potentially harmful in the farreaching and fundamental sense that it would invite a loss of confidence in the administration of justice in these Islands. This is so not only in respect of the particular decision under scrutiny, but also with regard to subsequent decisions of convictions that may arise. This is because it could lead observers to begin to question whether the decisions themselves merely reflect the judges’ responses to the pressure of criticism. It is in that context that I believe the people of these Islands are most requiring of a response by way of assurance from the judiciary and this I now proffer: the judges and magistrates of the Cayman Islands will remain faithful to their

Constitutional oaths of office no matter what the criticisms and no matter what the consequences. I should also remind the public here what the judicial oath of office requires: judges will “well and truly serve Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her Heirs and Successors and the people of the Cayman Islands, and will do right to all manner of people according to law without fear or favour, affection or ill will. So help [us] God.” In a criminal trial, what the oath therefore requires is the returning of a true verdict according to the evidence and the applicable law. But not even by virtue of that solemn oath may the members of the judiciary claim to be infallible -- they can claim only to do their very best to be true to their oaths. The question of whether judges are right or wrong is a question of law. The law ensures that judges are immediately and uniquely accountable -- in a way that no other arm of Government is -- by way of appeal. And the appeal process is hierarchical: going up in the typical

case, from a single judge (or judge and jury) to three judges and, then, finally, to five (in the Privy Council). This process ensures the greatest likelihood that the cases which involve matters of far-reaching consequences for persons and that are of fundamental importance to the society as a whole are properly decided. That is how our system of justice is intended to work -- under the rule of law. It is a system that has worked remarkably well for centuries. It both requires and deserves the respect and trust of the people of these Islands; this holds true no less so than for the other agencies involved in our relentless struggle for law enforcement against those who would bring violence and anarchy into our midst. It is only by our common efforts and mutual respect for the law and for its institutions that we may prevent them from succeeding. Hon. Anthony Smellie Chief Justice to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away!

dody.denman@ieyenews.com

It’s raining! It’s not just raining, it is gloriously raining. The sky is dark as I sit here in the quiet listening to the wind; lightning and heavy drops hitting the roof. The rainfall beats against the metal fireplace flue taking me back to my childhood. I remember sleeping at my grandmothers, especially on cold, rainy nights. The smaller children shared a bed, lined up like sardines. Then the weight of the handmade quilts would pack us in making it impossible to move.

The only heat was from the fireplace, but unless you were standing directly in front of it, there was no warmth. If you did face the fire, your backside was cold, so it was a continuous rotation to stay comfortable. So with little heat, the heavy quilts were piled high. There was no turning after that. My favourite was on the nights it would rain. As the downpour pelted the metal roof, it created a musical symphony that nothing can imitate. I would lie awake as

long as possible listening to the water lullaby as the rhythm lulled me to sleep. The house is gone, my precious grandmother is gone, but today it rains on my metal chimney and my memories are forever with me. There is something about going back to your childhood that makes you long for the comfort foods of those days. I decided it was time for a “Chicken Pot Pie.” This is a loved recipe in my family. I hope you will make it one of yours.

Chicken Pot Pie Ingredients

• 2 lbs. chicken (I used four breasts. Save the bones for another use. Place in freezer and I will explain soon.) • 2 carrots (sliced) • 2 celery stalks (diced) • 1 onion (diced) • 2 large potatoes (diced) • 2 tsp. Chicken soup base seasonings (or bouillon) • 1 cup frozen green peas

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Heat large skillet or dutch oven over medium heat with 2-3 Tbls. oil. Dice chicken in bite size pieces. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and flour. Shake off excess flour and add to skillet. You will have to do this in batches. Brown all the chicken removing to plate. Add oil if needed then place carrots, celery, onions and potatoes in pan. Lightly salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat until done. Remove vegetables to plate. 3. Add butter to pan and melt. Stir in flour to make roux, scraping brown bits off bottom of pan. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook for about 2 minutes. (You want the raw flour

taste to cook out.) Add 2 cups chicken broth and soup base. Heat until thickened. Add more broth if needed. 4. In 9x13 baking dish evenly place chicken, vegetables, 1 cup frozen peas and broth. Cover with pie crusts crimping the dough to fold over the side, pressing to make it stick. (I used frozen for this.) Use excess crust to decorate pot pie. Beat egg with 1 tsp. water in small bowl. Brush the dough with egg wash and make 4 slits in the top for venting steam. Place on baking sheet and bake for 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown and filling is bubbling hot.

Breast Cancer survivors enjoying the survivors tent.

Over 700 walkers and runners turned out for the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens (LCTG) Annual Brenda Tibbetts-Lund 5K Memorial Walk/ Run, which was held at West Bay Public Beach on Saturday, October 8. Now a firm fixture on the events calendar, the memorial run/walk is in its 14th year. Organised in memory of Brenda Tibbetts-Lund who lost her battle with breast cancer, this event seeks to raise funds to fight against breast cancer and to promote the importance of early detection as the best protection in

this fight. The event also celebrates the survivors of breast cancer and all other types of cancer. A special ‘survivors’ tent was erected on the beach and it was inspiring to see the interaction between the survivors, family members and participants in the walk/run. Awards for the run/walk were given for first, second and third place in different age sections.Spot prizes were given which included a $500 travel voucher donated by Higgs & Johnson, champagne brunches by Westin and Ritz Carlton Resorts, an

island tour by Webster Tours and many more fascinating prizes. Lion Wendy Wiltshire, Chairperson of the BCA Committee stated that she was overwhelmed by the continued support from the public for this event. She gave a special thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and members of the Lions family who she said made the event the success it was. Cayman Islands put 4 past Suriname

Women’s Technical Director Thiago Cunha gets the Women ready to face Suriname

Andrew Zarczynski info@ieyenews.com

The Cayman Islands under 20 Women’s Team opened their CFU World Cup Qualifying campaign with an impressive 4-0 win over the hosts Suriname. An excited crowd was on hand at the Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname to witness Cayman take on the home country. The first half of game didn’t live up to the billing as both young teams showed signs of nerves and seemed to be overwhelmed by the occasion. The Cayman Islands were fielding a very young team; Eight of Caymans starting eleven were 18 years old or younger. Cayman managed to create a number of half chances in the first half but unable to convert and went into the dressing room at half time 0-0. The second half saw Cayman take the ascendancy; the girls came out firing on all cylinders and opened the scoring in the 48th Minute form a set play. Shanice Monteith bent in an inviting cross that was converted by Courtisha Ebanks who managed to rise above the Suriname defenders and power home her header. Two minutes later Cayman doubled their lead with a superb 25-yard lob from Brianna Hydes who caught the Suriname keeper off her line. Brianna’s goal

seemed to push Cayman into overdrive as they came with wave after wave of attack. Suriname’s resistance was breached again in the 60th Minute when Marrisa McLaughlin latched onto a cross from Jetena Bodden who worked tirelessly all game. The rout was completed in the 75th minute when Shanice Monteith manufactured a goal out of nothing; Cayman Captain Jessica Ebanks found Monteith in space on the half way line who then ran 45 yards with the ball before calmly slotting home Cayman’s fourth. Head Coach Eric Dobrzanski was very satisfied with his teams second half performance and result, Dobrzanski said “The team played an inspired second half and proved that they wanted to make a statement in this round of qualifiers, they realised the adjustments that needed to be made and capitalised, I could not be more proud of every single one of the girls who was wearing a Cayman jersey tonight”. Cayman Islands Striker Shanelle Frederick from the Cayman Brac who is still only 15 years old was a constant threat in attack and instrumental in everything that Cayman had to offer going forward. Shanelle said “It’s an honour to put on the Cayman Shirt

and play with these girls, they are all my sisters and we are a family. I should have had a few goals tonight but the main thing is that the team won and now we focus on Trinidad and Tobago”. The Cayman Islands Under 20 National Team will play Trinidad and Tobago Thursday October 20, 2011 in their final Qualification game of the first round. Kick Off is 5pm Cayman time.
