UWI’s three new degrees “It feels like I’m in a dream!”

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus marked the launch of three brand-new degree programmes with a region-wide media event, where one could “meet” with course facilitators across the Caribbean. The UWI has a presence throughout the Caribbean, in the form of both regular college campuses, but also smaller centres, such as the one in Olympic Way, George Town. From there students have access to many UWI different degrees via the centre’s distance learning facilities. These facilities were demonstrated to good effect during the event, as local centres were able to chat with each other via a state-of-the-art internet hook-up. Head of Cayman’s Open Campus, Robert Geofroy said: “We are having a regional media-launch for three new programmes that are being introduced; two in September and one in January. The two in September are the BSc in Early Childhood Development and Family Studies, and the BSc in Youth Development Work. Then in January there’s also a M.A Degree in English. Students can do all three courses from this campus here.” Mr. Geofroy believes that one of the biggest advantages about taking a bachelor’s or master’s degree through the Open Campus is cost, which to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

The other advantage Mr. Geofroy wanted to point out is the flexibility of study - the UWI Open Campus is geared more towards busy adults who just don’t have time, (either because of
work, home commitments, or both) to attend college full time. Many different options are open to them for study. Students enjoy coming to the Open Campus to hear a lecture delivered from an expert situated in one of the UWI’s main campus sites, but they also pursue their degrees through online resources in the comfort of their own homes. Lots of kids look forward to every second Saturday at George Town Primary School - that’s the day the Kiwanis Book Mobile hits town. The Book Mobile is really much more than just a library on wheels It’s also a chance to read a book with an adult, and so explore wonderful
worlds of imagination and wonder – enough to give a young child a thirst for reading for life. There are also books to borrow, as with a regular library, and group reading sessions too to really make books come alive. The Book Mobile is part of a worldwide project involving Kiwanis clubs around the globe. After a year of fundraising the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman purchased a trailer
in 2009, which they managed to transform into a mobile library. The project is always looking for new books and the clubs maintain the expenses required to operate the trailer and the vehicle that pulls the trailer. The club has invested over $17,000 into the Mobile Library and the average annual cost is approximately $3,000. The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman actively promotes the well being of young children and also supports the four Key Clubs in the High Schools. In addition to the Book Mobile programme, they are involved in organising other activities such as a golf tournament, Bike-A-Thon, the “Buy A Kid Breakfast” programme, “Santas Landing,” a Dog Walk, and a Key Leader Weekend If you have any questions you can contact Mobile reading programme at 916-6331.

Continued from front page The swimmer had kept the phone “as a keepsake”, Mr Bodden said, until, chatting later to a local shopkeeper, the clerk advised the tourist to contact police, who took possession of the phone “about 4:00 or 5:00pm”. “We have proved the cellphone belonged to Nathan” Mr Bodden said. “However, that area where it was found was part of our in-water search. We continue to search, though. We absolutely cannot draw any conclusions from where the phone was found. “Strong tidal currents can submerge and hide an object. We are very fortunate this individual spotted it, very fortunate to be able to say that we found something.” Mr Clarke disappeared Saturday evening at approximately 9:00pm after sharing drinks at Calico Jack’s on Public Beach with friends and fiancée Lisa Beck, 32, also a UK resident. The couple has been together eight years, the last four in Grand Cayman. Miss Beck has said she last saw Mr Clarke “walking towards the water’s edge” about 8:30, wearing only beige shorts. She telephoned him at 10 minutes after 9:00, reaching his voicemail as the group prepared to leave. The last call from Mr Clarke’s phone occurred between 8:07pm and 8:09pm on Saturday, Mr Bodden said, describing earlier reports that a signal had been detected as late as 1:00am on

Monday, 27 February, as “absolutely not correct”. He said police had interviewed the individual receiving the final call, but declined to identify anyone. He also declined to say how many calls had been made to Mr Clarke’s phone since his disappearance or during what length of time. He would not identify anyone who had tried ringing Mr Clarke, saying only “there have been a number of calls going to the handset, a number of calls from family and friends trying to find him, but none of them connected. They would have gone straight to voicemail.” In the wake of the discovery of the phone, Mr Bodden said, investigators had contacted “every cruise ship that was here in the last

five days, letting them know we are conducting this investigation “to ensure that no other property, which could be significant to the enquiry, has been retrieved by unsuspecting passengers and retained.” Repeating his message of yesterday, Mr Bodden dismissed rumours that Mr Clarke had been abducted. “We have no evidence suggesting any criminal activity has occurred.” “This is a missing person inquiry. Speculation is extremely unhelpful,” he said. Philip Beck, father of Lisa, said Mr Clarke had been a strong swimmer, unlikely to have gotten into trouble. “He was a watersports instructor, so treating the sea with a lot of respect was part of Nathan’s
background. It would have been a silly thing to do, “ he said, doubting that Mr Clarke had gone swimming after dark. ”I don’t think so, but I can’t say because I don’t know,” he said. Mr Bodden said the search would continue, but elapsed time made it more difficult. “We are now five days into the search, and while everyone involved remains hopeful, we have to be realistic and say that as time goes on the more concerned we are becoming about Nathan’s wellbeing,” Mr Bodden said. “Our searches today will once again concentrate on the beach and sea area around where Nathan was last seen and we will of course immediately make his family aware of any further developments.”

McKeeva/McLean(s) row over funds and favours

Proclaiming he is doing the best for the people of East End, Premier McKeeva Bush yesterday defied criticism of his allocation of $200,000 of ForCayman Investment Alliance funds to the district. Asking “why not the ForCayman Alliance?” Mr Bush defended his Tuesday night announcement that he would give $200,000 to East End independent political candidate John McLean Jr for district improvements, bypassing MLA Arden McLean whom, he said, had never asked for anything. Meanwhile, Opposition leader Alden McLaughlin said he was writing to Governor Duncan Taylor “because of this corruption”. ”It’s really the worst case I have even known of the blatant misuse of public funds by the government to promote the candidacy of their chosen candidate,” he said. Meanwhile in East End John McLean Jr said the money was going to two local construction companies for five community projects, and that while he would manage the allocations, he would not be paid.

“The money is not coming to John McLean Jr,” the independent district candidate said yesterday. “It’s coming to East End. We’ve been asking for some of these projects for over a decade. The usual politicians, the President and the Secretary of the Football Club,” he said, had all asked. “There is nothing happening in East End,” Mr McLean said, lamenting the dearth of economic activity, “and now I’m getting pushed down as I try to accept something for my district. “It’s only $200,000. I have asked for an amount for the craft market and a tourism building, to convert the old East End Library to a boxing gym and to build changing areas down by the beach so people don’t have to go into the bushes or change in their car. I am trying to get some activity for the district and trying to get people back to work,” he said. Mr Bush told iNews Cayman that John McLean had “asked for a lot of things for his district” while incumbent MLA Arden McLean “had not come to government. What kind of requests has he made and what has he asked for? “John McLean decided to request
and came to us and he should be congratulated,” Mr Bush said. “He asked us to do things and we are going to do them. “We are not giving $200,000 to John McLean, but to a group of gentlemen. These are good things to do and we will handle them,” he said. While Arden Mclean did not return calls by press time, Mr McLaughlin disputed Mr Bush’s statement that the East End MLA had never asked anything. “That is a complete and utter untruth,” he said. “He has made written and verbal presentations to Cabinet in which he asked for so many things.” The constitution entitles any district without a ruling-party MLA to appear before Cabinet every three months. Mr Bush acknowledged John Mclean was an independent candidate but said “I do not know” if he will run in 2013. Mr McLean said, however, that he had made it clear after he lost 2009 national polls that he would try again. ”I conveyed that immediately after the last election,” he said. “I made it clear I will run as an independent, but I am working
closely with the UDP. I am not differentiating among party politics. I worked closely with the UDP and I worked closely with the PPM on opposition to the East End Seaport. I have reached out and tried to work with them.” He described as “stupid” accusations of “vote-buying” and corruption. “This is a community thing. The government has put me as a manager for the beach and community clean-ups for three years and I was never paid for it. The opposition is only getting back what they have dished out to the UDP.” Mr Bush rejected criticism of using funds from the Dart Realty-government $1.5 billion, 30-year ForCayman Investment Alliance (FCIA) programme of infrastructure and community development for the district grants. “Why not do it? It’s not for John McLean. It’s for the district. I don’t care what people say,” he said. Tales of chaos after deadly pre-dawn storms HARRISBURG, Ill. (AP) -- Jeff Rann had ample warning that terrible weather was approaching before dawn. A frantic call to his wife from his mother-in-law alerted them to reports that a tornado was barreling down, and Rann heard the deafening wail of storm sirens. Rann was among those who survived the weather’s passing assault Wednesday, his home untouched. Yet just two blocks away in the southern Illinois town of Harrisburg, population 9,000, Rann’s parents were not as fortunate. Rann raced through the darkness in his pickup truck to his parents’ duplex but saw instantly there was nothing left, natural gas whistling eerily as it spewed from the property’s severed meter. In the mud of a debris-strewn field, Rann found the body of his dad, 65-yearold Randy Rann, and his mother, 62-year-old Donna Rann. “She just said, `It hurts. It hurts’,”
Rann said of his mother, who had been looking forward to early retirement next month but who died a short time later at a hospital. Caught in the relatively uncommon night-time twister, the Ranns were among six people killed when blocks of homes in Harrisburg were flattened by overnight storms that raked the nation’s midsection, killing at least 12 people in three states. In southern Missouri, one person was killed in a Buffalo trailer park while two more fatalities were reported in the Cassville and Puxico areas. A tornado hopscotched through the main thoroughfare of Missouri country music mecca Branson, damaging some of the city’s famous theaters just days before the start of the town’s crucial tourist season. Three people were reported killed in eastern Tennessee - two in Cumberland County and another in DeKalb County.
And in Kansas, a man whose Harveyville home collapsed on him after an EF2 tornado packing wind speeds of 120 to 130 mph demolished much of the tiny community was taken off life support Wednesday evening. At least 16 tornados were reported from Nebraska and Kansas across southern Missouri to Illinois and Kentucky, according to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., an arm of the National Weather Service. In Harrisburg, which has a rich coal-mining history, Mayor Eric Gregg called the tornado strike “heartbreaking.” The National Weather Service preliminarily listed the tornado as an EF4, the secondhighest rating given to twisters based on damage. Scientists said the tornado was 200 yards wide with winds up to 170 mph. Adding to the danger, it hit as many slept - a timing research meteorologist Harold Brooks
called unusual but “not completely uncommon.” Brooks, with the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla., said perhaps 10 percent of tornadoes happen between midnight and 6 a.m., a time when the danger level rises because the storms are harder to spot and it’s harder to get the word out. “If you’re asleep, you’re less likely going to hear anything, any warning message on the danger,” Brooks said.
US teacher dies in north Iraq school shooting SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq (AP) -- An American gym teacher at a Christian school in the northern Iraqi Kurdish region was killed Thursday when a student in a crowded classroom pulled out a gun, shot the teacher and then as his terrified classmates fled the room, shot himself, officials and eyewitnesses said. The incident marked a rare violent death of an American in the relatively peaceful Kurdish region, which has been largely immune from the chaotic violence that has defined the rest of Iraq since the U.S. invasion. The quarrel broke out Thursday morning at the Medes School in Sulaimaniyah between the gym teacher and the student, identified as 18-year old Biyar Sarwar, said city police spokesman Sarkawit Mohammed. Mohammed said Sarwar then shot himself, and died of the wounds later at a nearby hospital. Sulaimaniyah health director Retawit Hama Rashid confirmed Sarwar’s death. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos in the classroom. Ahmed Mohammed said he was there when the argument broke out. But he said he ignored it at first because Sarwar was in the back of the room and could barely be heard. “Then I heard the gunshot,” said Ahmed, his face pale as he recounted the argument. “I turned my head and saw the body of the American teacher on the ground with blood near it. All the students started to run out of the room. Seconds later as I was running to the reach the school gate, I heard another gunshot.” Sulaimaniyah mayor Zana Hama Saleh confirmed the police account but declined to speculate on Sarwar’s motive.
The Associated Press is withholding the gym teacher’s name pending notification of next of kin. Sulaimaniyah is located in Iraq’s comparatively peaceful Kurdish region, 160 miles (260 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad. The Kurdish region has generally been free of the bombings and shootings that have plagued the rest of Iraq in recent years. Foreigners, including American citizens, usually travel freely around northern Iraq without the armed guards or armored vehicles often used in the rest of the country. The attack came at the Medes School, a private, Christian, English language-based academy that covers elementary through secondary grade levels. It runs schools in the three provinces that make up Iraq’s northern Kurdish region with a total enrollment of about 2,000 students.
Students described the slain teacher as a devout Christian who frequently praised Christianity and prayed in the classroom. However, Saleh, the city’s mayor, said the teacher was not a missionary and cast doubt that the killing was motivated by sectarian issues because Sarwar “had no radical religious tendencies.”

British galleries buy Renaissance masterpiece LONDON (AP) — Two major British art galleries have raised 45 million pounds ($72 million) to buy a Renaissance masterpiece that has been in the U.K. for 200 years and keep it on public display — a purchase announced Thursday as a substantial cultural victory in tough economic times. Britain’s National Gallery contributed 25 million pounds to buy Titian’s “Diana and Callisto,” which it will own jointly with the National Galleries of Scotland. The rest of the money came from an art charity, lottery profits and private
donors. The galleries did not appeal to the public for funds. National Gallery Director Nicholas Penny said the purchase had used up most of the gallery’s 32 million pound reserve fund, accumulated from a century of bequests. “It’s true we’ve depleted our resources very considerably by the acquisition,” he said. “But if we hadn’t taken this opportunity I think we would diminish our chances of further bequests in the future. “I know some people might think, why not buy 10 lesser things, but I
think the National Gallery was founded primarily as a collection of great masterpieces.” The purchase means the painting will be reunited with its companion piece, “Diana and Actaeon,” which the two galleries bought for 50 million pounds in 2009. The prices, agreed with owner the Duke of Sutherland, are only about a third of what the paintings have been estimated to be worth on the open market.

Consumers spend more after incomes rise again WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers earned a little more in January and spent most of the extra money. The modest gains should keep the economy growing slowly. But they disappointed economists, who were expecting bigger increases after two months of strong hiring. The Commerce Department said Thursday that consumer spending increased 0.2 percent in January. That’s better than December’s reading of no change. Americans’ income rose 0.3 percent, the second straight monthly increase. A separate report from the Labor

Department suggested February was another strong month for hiring. Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dipped last week to 351,000. The figure matched a four-year low set three weeks ago, leading many economists to predict employers added more than 200,000 net jobs in February for the third straight month. After paying taxes and adjusting for inflation, incomes actually dipped in January. That reflected a big increase in tax payments last month, partly because of the expiration of a tax credit. At the same time, inflation-
adjusted spending was flat for the third straight month. That was partly because of warmer weather, which allowed people to spend less to heat their homes. “Stronger job creation is not generating more spending,” said Jennifer Lee, an economist at BMO Capital Markets. She expects many economists will lower their forecasts for growth in the current quarter. Hiring in December and January, rather than pay raises, helped boost income. That trend

How TV made heartthrob out of Monkees’ Davy Jones LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Before there was MTV, before “American Idol” made overnight stars of people you never heard of, there was “The Monkees,” a band fronted by a diminutive singer named Davy Jones who was so boyishly good looking that teenage girls swooned the first time they ever saw him. That was at the end of the summer of 1966, when Jones and his three Monkee cohorts, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz, arrived on weekly television, portraying a carbon copy of another band called the Beatles. Each Monday night for the next two years, people would tune into NBC to see the comical trials and tribulations of four young musicians who tooled around in a tricked-out car called the Monkeemobile. When they weren’t introducing two or three new songs per show, they would be busy rescuing damsels in distress or being chased by bumbling outlaws in a comical display of slapstick that has sometimes been compared to the work of the Marx Brothers. Although all four members handled the lead vocals during their music videos, it was Jones, the one time child star of the British musical stage, who quickly became the group’s heartthrob. With his boyish good looks and endearing British accent augmented by a strong, Broadway-trained singing voice, it was a role he would play for the rest of his life. Jones died Wednesday of a heart attack near his home in Indiantown, Fla., just months after he, Tork and Dolenz had completed a tour marking The Monkees’ 45th anniversary. He was 66. The Monkees had been created to cash in on the Beatles’ popularity, and although they never came close to achieving the critical stature of their counterparts, they did carve out a permanent niche in music as what Rolling Stone’s Encyclopedia of Rock `n’ Roll has called “the first and perhaps the best of the `60s and `70s prefabricated pop groups.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
Their songs were melodic, catchy, and many have endured over the years. The first two they released, “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer,” became No. 1 hits. So did “Daydream Believer,” on which Jones sang the lead and which Dolenz told The Associated Press four years ago remains the Monkees’ most requested song at concerts. “Of the four actors they hired, Davy Jones was by far the most accomplished as a singer and as a performer. He was really the perfect choice,” said Rich Podolsky, author of a biography of Don Kirshner, who was “The Monkees” TV show’s musical director. Born in Manchester, England, on Dec. 30, 1945, Jones had been a child star in his native country, appearing on television and stage, including a heralded role as “The Artful Dodger” in a London production of the play “Oliver.” When the show came to Broadway, he earned a Tony nomination at age 16 for the role, a success that brought him to the attention of Columbia Pictures/ Screen Gems Television, which created “The Monkees.” Hundreds of musician-actors turned out for the auditions, but the young men who became the Monkees had no idea what ultimately awaited them. “They had an ad in the newspaper,” Jones recalled on NBC’s “Today Show” last year, “and then we all showed up.” When they put him together with Tork, Dolenz and Nesmith, the chemistry was obvious. “That’s it,” he recalled everyone around him saying: “Magic.” At 5-feet-3 inches, he was by far the shortest member of the group - a fact often made light of on the show. But he also was its dreamboat, mirroring Paul McCartney’s role in the Beatles. And as the only Briton among the four, Jones was in some ways the Monkees’ direct connection to the Beatlemania still strong in the U.S. when the TV show made its debut. In August 1966, the Beatles
performed in San Francisco, playing their last live set for a paying audience. The same month, the Monkees released their first album, introducing the group to the world. The show would debut the following month. It was a shrewd case of cross-platform promotion. As David Bianculli noted in his “Dictionary of Teleliteracy,” “The show’s selfcontained music videos, clear forerunners of MTV, propelled the group’s first seven singles to enviable positions of the pop charts: three number ones, two number twos, two number threes.” The Monkees would soon come under fire from music critics, however, when it was learned that session musicians - and not the group’s members - had played the instruments on their recordings. They were derided as the “Prefab Four,” an insulting comparison to the Beatles’ nickname, the “Fab Four.” In reality, Jones could play the drums and guitar. Although Dolenz, the group’s drummer on the show, only learned to play that instrument after he joined the Monkees, he also could play guitar. Nesmith played guitar and wrote numerous songs, both for the Monkees and others. Tork, who played bass and keyboards on the TV show, was a multi-instrumentalist. The group eventually prevailed over the show’s producers, including Kirshner, and began to play their own instruments. Regardless, they were supported by enviable talent. Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” and Neil Diamond penned “I’m a Believer.” Musicians who played on their records included Billy Preston, who later played with the Beatles, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell and Ry Cooder. Eventually, even the critics would come around, with Rolling Stone’s rock encyclopedia acknowledging that the Monkees made “some exceptionally good pop records.”
After the TV show ended, Jones continued to tour with the group for a time, sometimes playing the drums at concerts when Dolenz came up front to sing. “He was one of the funniest men and most talented I have ever known,” Tork said in an interview Wednesday night. Although the group would eventually break up over creative differences, it would reunite periodically over the years for brief tours, usually without Nesmith. In 1987, Jones, Tork, and Dolenz reformed to record the album, “Pool It,” and in 1996 all four of the Monkees got back together for the album “Justus” and a TV movie “Hey, Hey, It’s The Monkees!” The film, directed by Nesmith, featured them once again tooling around in the Monkeemobile. “David’s spirit and soul live well in my heart, among all the lovely people,” Nesmith said in a statement Wednesday. For “Justus,” the quartet’s last recording, the four made a point of playing every instrument themselves, in part to prove that they could. Although the Monkees received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989, one honor that has eluded the group was induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica Pacheco, and four daughters from previous marriages.

The Editor speaks Throwing a Dart

One should always beware of someone throwing a dart, especially if it is aimed at you. Not only if it hits you it will hurt and if it is laced with poison it might kill you. I am somewhat astounded to learn from the Public Meeting held in East End last Tuesday (28) that the premier is giving John McLean Jr. $200,000 from Dart as part of the proposed ForCayman Investment Alliance donation to government. This public meeting was supposedly a government update for the people of East End but it turned into a United Democrat Party (UDP) election campaign. There was precious little new for the constituents of East End to learn and instead it was an endless barrage of criticism at the present incumbent, MLA Arden McLean, accusing him of doing nothing. Then came the announcement from Premier, Hon. McKeeva Bush that John McLean Jr., who ran against Arden Mclean at the
last general election and lost, is not a member of the UDP but he emphatically backed him if he were to run again in 2013. He said the $200,000 John McLean would be given was to “project manage a number of local community initiatives.” These included a community boxing and regular gym, a tourism and craft market and “other things.” So what are these “other things”? And why wasn’t this money offered to the District through Arden McLean? Did Mr. Bush say to Arden, “I have a large sum of money placed in my care for community projects and let’s see where it can do some good. Any ideas?” What a feather in Mr Bush’s hat and if Arden had turned it down……. We know the answer. Arden has publically said he had been forced to “beg from the private sector” to get an after-school programme started in his district. An afterschool programme. Doesn’t that sound better than John McLean Jr.’s initiatives? Arden made a presentation to government on May 18th
2010 asking for monies for projects estimated at $350,000. These included the after-school programme, canteen for the East End Primary School (because pupils have to eat outside), extra policing, Sunrise Cottage retirement home, hurricane shutters for those who cannot afford them, paving of access road to the Civic Centre, Changing rooms/toilet facilities on the Donoavan Rankine Playing Field, removal of turtle grass at the Colliers Public Beach and Robert White Hole in central East End, Learning centre at the Civic Centre, Clearing of beach area at Lower End of Bay and the continuation of John McLean Dr. westward. Arden’s presentation raised other issues too. For our premier to say Arden McLean had done nothing for East End and that is why he is backing John McLean, Jr. with the money “from Dart”, can only be interpreted one way. To help John McLean Jr. to campaign against the present incumbent! I doubt very much Dart is happy with this. He has been brought
into the political process and his ForCayman Investment Alliance’s money is NOT being used as it was (supposedly) intended. I do not know John McLean Jr. very well but I do know his father and we have always had a very good relationship. I do not think he can be delighted at this development especially as his son has repeatedly said if he runs it will be as an Independent. He still has time to duck the dart aimed right at him. I also have to support Arden Mclean’s anger at the premier’s accusation that he opposed Dr Devi Shetty’s medical tourism project. This is not borne out by the written presentation. I have commended Mr. Bush on a number of occasions as being the only professional politician we have. I have to question this last performance. He is fooling no one and digging himself a mighty big hole. Now let’s see if Mr. McLean Jr. can avoid falling into the hole as his huge supporter is teetering on the edge. The tip of that dart really is laced with some vicious poison.

Affirmations and self-improvement Is self-improvement important and can affirmations help?

Most of us have goals, dreams or ambitions but do not know how to go about achieving them. You may have thought about what would make up self- improvement and your ideal life, but have no idea how to even begin to make the plans and take the actions required to make them a reality. Every thought you think and every word you say is an affirmation. Affirmations are very powerful tools that can be key in bringing about change in your life, whether it is in the form of personal change or bringing new situations into your life. Self-affirmations are healing, optimistic messages that you give to yourself to counter your negative messages. Affirmations resemble visualisation with mental images but words are used instead. Words you say out loud, read or write each day that will help you internalise what you want to be and what you hope to achieve. Affirmations are self improvement prophecies that when visualised and believed in will come true. You may have a vague idea on how to go about self-improvement. Many of us believe that if only we had a better job, or had been given better opportunities, or met the love of our life, or whatever else, everything would be fine and we would be happy. We feel that our happiness or lack of happiness is decided by external factors and our thoughts and actions are of little consequence. We believe that if only

we had more money we could have whatever we want and be on their way to self-improvement. Some of us may have spent little time thinking about what we actually want from life, and do not really believe there is anything we can do to create our fuzzy version of utopia anyway, apart from buying more lottery tickets. Other people don’t even know what they actually want from their lives and may even have little idea what would really makes them happy. They seem to just drift from day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year, and do little more than just about get by. They may have seemingly secure jobs and be earning enough to live relatively comfortable lives. They seem happy enough and have no great ambition to achieve anything more from their lives than they currently have. Is self-improvement important and can affirmations help? Throughout our lives we are all constantly growing and developing. Circumstances make us grow and develop, even if we do not make the conscious decision to do so. Up to a certain age, we learn through formal education and we continue to learn through our experiences for the rest of our lives. We have to learn and grow to deal with everything that life throws at us. We all have to go through self-improvement. Modern life moves at a dramatically faster pace than at anytime in history. For anyone living in modern society there are more opportunities to do
anything that you want to do with your life than ever before. Because the workplace is so competitive, people who are ambitious and hungry for success know they need to learn new skills and knowledge to keep ahead of the pack. To attain this, selfimprovement is needed. So where does affirmations come in? Affirmations help you to improve yourself because by nature humans are compelled to follow what they believe in. What motivates you is your belief in the end result. If you continually tell yourself something, your inner self will make it become true. Affirmations strengthen ambition, create new solutions and activate the subconscious mind in order to make your affirmation come true. The affirmations you repeat will become a positive habit that will result in self-improvement of your mind, body and soul. Affirmations are said starting with the words: “I am”, “I can”, and I will”. An “I am” affirmation is a statement of who you are such as I am intelligent or I am creative. An “I can” affirmation is a statement of
your potential and power to change such as I can be strong or I can be a winner. An “I will” affirmation is a statement of positive change that you want to accomplish such as I will control my temper or I will handle financial matters wisely today. Affirmations should always be stated in a positive manner. An excellent way to use affirmations is to right down 30 of them, each on a separate index card. Each day of the month focus on one affirmation. Keep the card with you displayed in your sight and read it out loud during the day. Just repeating the words is not enough. Affirmations are not magical sentences that are said just a few times and then create miracles. For affirmations to produce results, they should be repeated often with feeling and conviction. A commitment to selfimprovement and personal growth may well be the deciding factor in how anyone’s future will turn out; and the affirmations you repeat will become a positive habit that will result in-self improvement of your mind, body and soul. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

something special. Another common scam is the Carat Total Weight scam. The tag on the piece of jewelry, usually a ring, only states the total carat weight of all diamonds in the piece, instead of listing the total weights separately for each diamond. This leads consumers to believe that the main diamond in the piece is actually bigger than it is. Ask what the total carat weight of the centre stone is. Also beware of fractions. Jewellery stores are allowed to round off diamond weights. And it always goes up. If you want an appraisal done on
a diamond beware of low balling where they undervalue and tell you they “will take it off your hands”. Get at least three other opinions. Another trick is to switch the diamond you have chosen and paid for with one of lesser quality and value when you leave it to be set in a piece of jewellery, or leave a diamond ring to be sized.

When it comes to diamonds, there are numerous scams to avoid. Most scams are minor, but there are some major ones that come up from time to time concerning the buying and selling of diamonds. Scams occur simply because most people who buy diamonds (for whatever reasons) don’t know that much about them. Therefore, they are easily fooled. Jewellery stores like to show their diamonds in bright lights. Lights
make diamonds shine. Ask to see the diamond in a different, darker type of lighting as well. Jewellery stores often run ‘fluorescence’ scams to varying degrees. Referring to a diamond as a blue-white diamond is one such scam. A bluewhite diamond sounds very unique and special, but in fact, this type of diamond is of lesser quality, even though the jeweller will try to make you think you are getting

If, like me, you are into high end audio you will be surprised to learn this from a blog I received the other day from Paul McGowan of PS Audio. If you were here in the Cayman Islands immediately after Hurricane Ivan (Sept. 2004) and looked up to the heavens you would have seen the sky was deep black, but thick with twinkling dots and dim wisps of cottony light. When I looked from the corner of my eye, the dim lights became more defined, easier to perceive as stars. To count them all would take years, if it were even possible. The number seems incomprehensible. And the mystery of what could exist out there, somewhere, at once inspired and humbled me. Because there was little or no electricity the night sky was spectacular. Enthralled by this, I spent hours every night looking upwards, knowing with a disquieting certainty that once Cayman returned to the ‘real’ world my focus would be drawn steadily and relentlessly away from the mysteries of the night sky as it was then. The real world when, even at nighttime, there is so much artificial light around it blurs us from the mystery of the night sky and the mystery of our lives. This point was driven home, recently, when I heard the following two intriguing but contradictory statements in the same day. First, in a recording, Carolyn Myss (he well known American medical intuitive) observed that this is the first time in which entire generations will grow up without seeing the stars! Imagine growing up in a big, bright city, without the resources to leave, surrounded by light, smog and tall buildings that blot out all but the most determined of the celestial objects. The second statement I heard came later that day, in a BBC World News story about the Hubble Space Telescope. A lead scientist for the telescope explained how, since the dawn of humanity we have been
seeking to understand the origin of the Universe. This, he said, is the first time that we do understand it. We can see the spectral remnants from the Big Bang and actually listen to the sounds of the Universe moments after its formation. What a strange world we have dreamed into existence. Our technology and science enables us to unravel the secrets of the stars while simultaneously creating communities that will never see them. As our understanding of our world and the Universe has expanded, we have, as a culture, become disconnected from the inherently mysterious nature of our existence. And as individuals we run the risk of losing touch with the powerful force of mystery in our lives. Since Ivan when was the last time you gazed into the sky? When was the last time you attempted to count the stars? When was the last time you wondered who or what might be out there in the vast reaches of space, or what your place is within this Universe? Mystery is a source of power for humans. We draw creativity, passion, healing and inspiration from the Unknown. Artists, scientists, inventors and philosophers all speak of the mysterious nature of discovery, creation and problem solving. Shamans and Healers of all cultures understand that the unknown holds the power to heal and transform the Soul, Mind and Body. When we lose touch with that mystery, we lose touch with a source of personal and communal power. Passion, too, comes from

Mystery. Consider your intimate relationships, past or present. It is not the daily encounters or the practical matters that keep a relationship growing. Nor is it the moments of tenderness and intimacy. These are all integral parts of a relationship, forming the foundation and structure. But it is in the moments of Mystery and Discovery that the flame of passion is refueled: It is when your lover surprises you with a perfect gift. Or when you catch an unexpected glimpse of your partner kneeling over a flower to inhale its aroma. When you close the door that leads to your personal mysteries, you deprive yourself of a source of power and passion. One way to reopen that door, or open it wider, is to embrace the mysteries around you. How does a tiny acorn transform itself into a majestic oak tree? How do the birds know when it is time to migrate? How does this

computer do what it does? What waits for us in the vast reaches of space? Do not believe that the scientists know everything. If Christopher Columbus had accepted the prevailing wisdom of his day, he never would have set sail. If Einstein had believed the existing theories of matter, space and time, he would not have formulated the theory of relativity. Bask in the mysteries. Challenge existing assumptions. Discover your own answers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant could be excused for harbouring a little grudge after Dwyane Wade broke his nose and gave him a concussion with a hard foul in the All-Star game, of all places. Instead, Bryant professes nothing but love for his fellow U.S. Olympian, even when the injuries required him to wear a sweaty protective mask in his first game back. And if Bryant had any hidden frustration about the whole situation, he probably took it out on the Minnesota Timberwolves. Bryant had 31 points, seven rebounds and eight assists while playing in that uncomfortable mask, and Los Angeles returned from the All-Star break with its 17th consecutive win over the Timberwolves, 104-85 on Wednesday night. Bryant didn’t miss a game after Wade fouled him awkwardly from behind, giving Kobe the first concussion of his athletic career. After getting late clearance from his neurologist, the NBA’s leading scorer slipped on a Richard Hamilton-style mask that quickly turned into “a sauna on my face,” but didn’t slow him at all. “It happens,” Bryant said. “You just have to deal with it and try to heal up as quickly as you possibly can, and get back on the court.” Although Wade and his Miami Heat visit Staples Center this weekend, Bryant is more interested in Friday’s visit from

the Sacramento Kings. He’ll keep wearing the mask until his nose is less tender — but anybody expecting payback for Wade on Sunday is foolish, he insists. “It was very simple: He didn’t mean to do it,” Bryant said. “He’s not that kind of person. ... He’s a nicer guy than I am, to be honest with you. He’s just not the type of person who would do something like that (on purpose).” Bryant has played through countless nagging injuries in the last few years as the prep-to-pro star hits his mid-30s. He’s been playing with a torn ligament in his right wrist since the season began. The foul left Bryant with headaches, nausea and neck pain on his way out of Orlando. “A lot of pressure,” Bryant said. “It just feels like constant throbbing at the base of my head and neck.” He made significant progress in the previous 24 hours and passed every test for concussion problems from his neurologist, Dr. Vern Williams, who declared him symptom-free before the game. “I understand the severity of the situation,” Bryant said. “You have to go through those steps. It’s part of the job. ... It’s definitely different. In that sense, you’re pretty helpless. You just have to be patient and hope for the best.” Bryant hit his first two jumpers in the opening minutes and finished the first quarter with 10 points. He also received several

brief massages on the bench from the Lakers’ physical therapist, both before and after scoring 12 points in the third quarter while Los Angeles pulled away. He made 9 of 10 free throws with the mask. Lakers coach Mike Brown felt confident enough in Bryant’s health to put him back in the game with the Lakers’ other four starters in the closing minutes when Minnesota chiseled the lead below 20 points. “Kobe is a special human being,” Brown said. “I don’t have answers for him. I don’t know what he’s made of. He’s just different. His body reacts different.” Pau Gasol scored 15 points and Andrew Bynum had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Lakers, who improved to 15-1 at home since losing their Christmas opener. Michael Beasley and Martell Webster scored 14 points apiece as the Timberwolves played the middle game of a back-to-back-to-back set without Kevin Love, who sat out with an apparent case of the flu. “From the start, they played harder than us,” Beasley said. “They wanted it more than we did. They were playing physical from the beginning. The 2011/12 Alex Alexander Memorial Season came to a fitting end with the DHL Cayman Storm raising the Alex Alexander Memorial Trophy for the first time since 2008. Since that time the John Doak Architecture Iguanas have held a firm grip on the trophy and the Iguanas certainly did not give up the trophy without a fight. The Iguanas, riddled with absences and injuries could only field a 12 man team on the 18th of February and the 3 man advantage should have meant an easy ride to
the trophy for the Storm. Instead, and as if possessed by the Spartan army, the Iguanas controlled the pace of the game for long periods and all were shocked to see the Iguanas 6-0 up with 1 minute left in the 1st half. The return of Venassio Tokotokovanua to the DHL Storm ranks was again to be the team’s saving grace as his try just before the half time whistle turned the tide of points to the Storm’s favor. Whilst the Iguanas never regained the lead they kept within breathing

distance throughout and only with a Baron Solomon solo effort late in the game were the Storm comfortable winners 34-15. In the earlier game of the day the Krys Global Buccaneers subjected the Queensgate Pigs Trotters to their 6th defeat of the regular season to secure 2nd place in the league standings but the game was again a close run affair. Going into the next stage of the domestic Cayman Rugby season the Pigs will be buoyed by the fact that the DHL Storm struggled
against a weakened Iguanas side and will hope to earn their first win of the season and march into the DART knockout vase final against what is likely to be the Buccaneers unless the Iguanas can turn around their injury woes in time for their clash. And now, excerpts from Hank Haney’s book on his six years as Woods’ swing coach are starting to be released. So when he was asked about the relentless scrutiny of his swing, his putting, just about everything, Woods fired the first volley. “Yeah, I know,” he said. “I think you’re one of the guys that does that, too.” There was nervous laughter before Woods continued. “It’s part of who I am and what I’ve accomplished,” he said. “I think it would have been probably similar if Jack (Nicklaus) was probably in my generation. Didn’t quite have the media scrutiny that they do now. And it’s just a different deal and I know that a lot of players don’t get the same analysis with their games that I do. But it’s been like that since I turned pro.” When questions turned to the book, Woods grew testy. Haney’s book, “The Big Miss,” is scheduled for release March 27, the week before the Masters. Navy SEAL,” Haney wrote, referring to the summer of 2007. “I didn’t know how he’d go about it, but when he talked about, it was clear that he had a plan. After finding out that the Navy SEAL age limit is 28, I asked Tiger about his being too old to join. `It’s not a problem,’ he said. `They’re making a special age exemption for me.’” When asked about the book, Woods said his disappointment with Haney hasn’t changed. When asked his reaction to the excerpt, Woods replied, “Well, I’ve already talked about it.” His agent, Mark Steinberg, said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that Haney engaged in “armchair psychology” that was “ridiculous.” “Because of his father, it’s no secret that Tiger has always had high respect for the military, so for Haney to twist that admiration into something negative is disrespectful,” Steinberg said. Woods’ father, Earl, was part of the U.S. Army’s special forces. The news conference at PGA National turned awkward when Alex Miceli, a Golfweek senior writer and contributor to Golf Channel, asked Woods if he considered being a Navy SEAL at the height of his career. “I’ve already talked about everything in the book. I’ve already commented on everything, Alex,” Woods said. “Then I must have missed you answering that question,” Miceli replied. “Well, I’ve already commented on the book. Is that in the book? Is it in the book?” Woods said. Miceli replied he had not seen the book. “You’re a beauty, you know that?” Woods said, forcing a smile. Miceli said Steinberg’s statement suggested something was wrong with the excerpt and he wanted to know if it was true. Woods paused for a moment, said with indifference, “I don’t know,” then stared at him for nearly five seconds and said, “Have a good day.” It was a change from the way he handled a news conference in December 2010. Tom Callahan had written in “His Father’s Son” that he would not have been surprised if Woods had followed his father into the military. Woods was asked that day where Callahan came up with that notion. “Well, I’ve always wanted to become
a SEAL,” Woods said back then. “That’s something that I told my dad from the very get-go - either I’m going to become a professional golfer or I’m going to go become a Navy SEAL.” On Wednesday, Woods worked hard to contain his anger. Even in questions related to golf, such as how he plays the Masters with the lead and his pursuit of the Nicklaus record, Woods rushed through his answers. He did not look as comfortable as he had been in dealings with the media earlier this year. He goes onto the course Thursday at PGA National, a course he has not seen since he was 14 and lost on the last day of the PGA Junior Championship to 17-year-old Chris Couch, who went on to win in New Orleans in 2006 for his lone tour victory. And while Woods looks capable of winning any time he plays depending on the putter - he no longer is considered the favourite. That role belongs to 22-year-old Rory McIlroy, who broke several of Woods’ records in winning the U.S. Open last summer and who could go to No. 1 in the world if he were to win. Also in the field is Lee Westwood, No. 3 in the world, coming off a semifinal loss to McIlroy last week in the Match Play.

Bolt can bolt to another world record at London Olympics Former Olymic Gold medalist and chairman of the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Olymics Game, Sebastian Coe, said triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt could get set for another world record. Because of the emergence of Yohan Blake and the return of American Tyson Gay all performing at the London Olympics this could push Bolt to even higher accomplishments. Bolt, who holds world records in the 100m (9.58) and 200m (19.19), has been head of the pack on the international sprinting stage, losing only once since dominating the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games where he claimed three gold medals, all in world record time.
His one loss came all the way back in August 2010 - when Gay got the better of Bolt in Stockholm. Sebastian Coe as reported in The Times of India newspaper said on Wednesday (29), “I do think it’s possible (for Bolt to run 9.4), but also having watched the extraordinary performances of Yohan Blake, his countryman, and Tyson Gay in the States it is not going to be a pushover either. I’m absolutely convinced that Usain can run faster, but this will be a Games that’s very competitive at 100 and 200. “I do seem to remember scientists telling people if they tried to break the four-minute mile, they would probably die in the process. I remember scientists telling me it
was probably unlikely that anybody would run significantly under 1:43 for 800 metres.” Coe’s world record of 1:41.73 for the 800 stood for 16 years. The former 800m and 1500m star athlete, who himself broke 13 world records and won two Olympic titles, also weighed in on the global fight against doping while warning against becoming suspicious towards every outstanding achievement. “Nobody comes from nowhere. Usain Bolt has been around a long time working very hard. It’s far too easy to simply say ‘they’ve made rapid and dramatic progress and therefore they’re on some kind of illegal supplement’. That’s rarely the case,” argued Coe.
