In 1977, the Minister of Tourism, the late Jim Bodden, started the festival now known as Pirates Week to boost tourism during our low season. He succeeded and the event has grown bigger each year. Music, street dances, District Days, costumes, parades, local food and drinks, song competitions, children’s day, sports events, fireworks and of course the pirates landing including the capture
of the governor. Only in the first day was the real governor captured (Thomas Russell) and after he was jostled and pushed around a bit too much, it was decided to have an actor play the part ever since. I had the honour to be that actor thirteen times. Yes, unlucky it was one year when the boat sank carrying me to the shore! To add even more insult as I waded almost chest deep in the sea to the shore a huge water balloon
hit me in the head knocking me down into the sand to much laughter. It was not a dignified entrance. I did get my own back when, at my last appearance as the governor, the pirates that came ashore to do the capture asked me who was the governor? I was standing alongside my attaché (who was dressed only in a shirt and trousers whilst I had on the full attire – coat and feathered hat) and I pointed to him. He was bound and carted off.

The Cayman Islands Miss Festival Queen competition got the Pirates Week festivities off to a colourful and glamourous start. That was followed by the Steel Pan competition, divided into Junior and Senior steel bands. The Juniors represented schools St Ignatius Triple C, Grace Christian Academy and Cayman Prep.

St Ignatius finished fourth, Triple C was third, Grace Christian Academy came second and Cayman Prep won. In the Senior Category were three teams. The winners Paneramers won, in second place was Pandemics and in third place came Pandemonium. Miss East End, Kasey Bodden won the Miss Festival Queen competition with a beautiful shell costume. Miss Bodden Town, Tori Miller came second, in a wearing a wonderful dress embroidered with sea animals, including a lovely stingray. Miss North Side, Mariah Forbes wore a beautiful undersea costume complete with a real sea fan, and Miss West Bay, Tiffany Conolly, looked stunning in a costume with two big wings which depicted the sea world. Miss George Town, Melissa Rankine wore a lovely green dress, depicting the mangroves, and Miss Cayman Brac, Sophia Johnson was wearing an outfit that was truly fit for a queen.

Business leaders have described growing frustration with trying to rebuild Cayman’s economy and put people to work, fearing the Islands are in profound danger if development projects do not start soon. In a series of full-page advertisements, at least 33 business owners have signaled support for the Dart Realtygovernment ForCayman Investment Alliance, a $1.2 billion 30-year development programme that proposes an immediate outlay of $200 million in the next 12 months. Sparked by Thompson Development Group Director Gene Thompson, the “Make it Happen Cayman” plea points to high unemployment and stagnant investment, saying the alliance will stimulate the economy, put people back to work and create business opportunites. country will die” without both the Dart agreement and the cruise-portconstruction deal with China Habour Engineering Company. Due to be signed this month, Mr Bush was, however, unable to name a date for either, citing various “setbacks”. “If we continue to stop every project, we will end up back under the coconut trees,” said Tortuga Rum founder-owner Robert Hamaty. “No one wants to destroy the environment, but you have to think: What’s good for the country, for jobs, for your children growing up?.” Architect Burns Conolly, whose Emerald Sounds development was thwarted this week by elected officials, said the “Make it Happen” group was a product of “pure frustration.” “Nothing is happening in the country, and people need to pay their mortgages and get back to work. The banks are taking their homes. Dart is willing to invest, to spend $200 million in the next two years, while the Bahamas are trying to get them to leave Cayman. And we are getting people objecting.”

Beacon Group acquisition Cayman-based Caledonian Global Financial Services has announced the acquisition of the Beacon Group of companies, which is based in the British Virgin Islands and comprises Beacon Capital Management, Beacon Fund Advisors and Beacon Fund Administrators. Beacon is a provider of fiduciary services, fund management and administration, and other investment services in both the BVI and Cape Town, South Africa. While regulatory approvals are pending, this transaction will serve to reinforce Caledonian’s international presence. Caledonian Fund Services’ assets under administration will increase to USD5bn, transforming the group into one of the strongest administrators in the jurisdictions that they operate. Caledonian Fiduciary Services footprint will also be strengthened through the addition of these two new offices. Beacon’s founder, David Sims, has 20 years of experience in fund administration and will assume the global managing director role for the Caledonian Funds Group, but no other changes will be made through the organisational structure at this time. Sims says the combination of the two companies gives the group the opportunity to leverage resources and reach a larger market. Beacon employees will join Caledonian, but will continue to work in the BVI and Cape Town offices to service clients. “Our vision for Caledonian is bold; it is to diversify our financial offerings through pioneering services and technology. Beacon’s team and services perfectly fit within our mission and we are now uniquely positioned,” says Kobi Dorenbush chief executive of Caledonian Global Financial Services.

Billy Crystal returning to host the Oscars LOS ANGELES (AP) — Billy Crystal is doing it again. The 63-year-old comedian and veteran Oscar host said Thursday on Twitter that he is hosting this season’s Academy Awards “so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions.” “Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage,” said Crystal in a later statement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “I am thrilled to be back there.” This will be the ninth Oscar stint
for Crystal, one of the most popular Oscar hosts of recent years. His last time was in 2004. Only Bob Hope hosted more Oscar shows, with 19 ceremonies between 1940 and 1978. Academy president Tom Sherak called Crystal “a comic legend and Oscar icon, and it feels good to have him back where he belongs.” The naming of Crystal follows a groundswell of sentiment for his return after he led a tribute to Bob Hope on the 2011 Oscar show for which he received a standing ovation. Crystal said later he was moved by the warm reception and
that “it might be fun” to host the show again.

New Greek cabinet to be sworn in ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece’s incoming prime minister is due to name his cabinet Friday, a day after being appointed to head an interim coalition government that will push through a new European debt deal and secure continued bailout funding to prevent a catastrophic default. Former European Central Bank vice president Lucas Papademos held talks with the country’s main political parties late into Thursday night to determine who would staff his cabinet, ahead of the formal swearing in Friday afternoon. The appointments are a delicate balancing act for Papademos as he seeks broad support for his administration. The swearing-in ceremony was delayed
by two hours to 4 p.m. (1400GMT), the president’s office said, without giving a reason. Papademos’ appointment capped two weeks of a political crisis that threatened to derail an EU plan to get a grip on the Greek debt crisis and raised questions about the country’s continued presence in the eurozone. “The participation of our country in the eurozone is a guarantee for the country’s monetary stability. It is a driver of financial prosperity,” the incoming premier said Thursday after being given the mandate to form a government. Papademos must now implement the terms of Greece’s latest debt deal — a
euro130 billion ($177 billion) agreement reached on Oct. 27. It includes provisions for private bondholders to forgive 50 percent — or some euro100 billion — of their Greek debt holdings.
Detroit prayer event puts Muslim community on edge DETROIT (AP) — An area with one of the largest Muslim communities outside the Middle East is bracing itself for a 24-hour prayer rally by a group that counts Islam among the ills facing the U.S. The gathering in Detroit at Ford Field, the stadium where the Detroit Lions play, starts Friday evening and is designed to tackle issues such as the economy, race, samesex relationships and abortion. Rollover but don’t die
I have written a number of articles on the rollover issue and my opposition to it. I am a paper Caymanian so the Independent Member for North Side, Ezzard Miller, may not be interested in them. My views are totally in line with the publisher, Joan (Watler) Wilson, whom was very outspoken in her opposition when it was introduced by the very party she supported (at that time). Everything she forecast unfortunately has come true. I have always respected Mr. Miller and I am puzzled at his insistence that it is “incompetent government and the high cost of doing business that has caused Cayman’s economic difficulties and that the idea that immigration policy is preventing the country from attracting ‘high net worth’s’ or investors, as claimed by both the premier and Anthony Travers at the recent Generation Now debate, is a red herring.” I can agree with him regarding his comments of “incompetent government” and the “high cost of doing business” here are certainly contributing factors. The new Term Limit Extension Period (TLEP) to avoid Rollover is a giant step in the right direction providing the fears Mr. Miller rightly voices have the necessary safeguards. Mr. Miller’s concerns are that the issue of legal and human rights to residency after a given period may raise its head again with the workers who are granted a TLEP some of whom will have been living in Cayman for more than nine years when their new permit expires. Sherri Bodden-Cowan, Chairperson of the TLEP, denies this will happen. She says any suggestion to the contrary is scaremongering. The TELP allows workers who were due to leave the island under the seven year limit to stay for another two years subject to the usual conditions. The law, however, states they cannot apply for residency and will not be able to use this permit as a road to status. As long as Mr. Miller stays I don’t think any Caymanian, indigenous or paper, will need to worry about Government giving citizenship to persons coming here to work.

Women have worn corsets for thousands of years. In fact the oldest corset dates back to ancient Minoans from around 2000 BC. When most people think of corsets they think of the heavy bulky garments from the middle ages of Europe. Traditional corsets were heavy, restrictive and very uncomfortable to wear. As fabric technology has improved corsets are now not only more comfortable but are being worn as outwear. By wearing a tightly laced corset for extended periods - a practice known as tight-lacing - men and women can learn to tolerate extreme waist constriction and reduce their natural waist size. Tight-lacers usually aim for 40 to 43 centimetres (16 to 17 inch) waists. The Guinness Book of World Records records two instances of women reducing to 15 inch waists: Ethel Granger and Cathie Jung. Other women, such as Polaire, also claim to have achieved such reductions. These are extreme cases. Corsets were and are usually designed for support, with freedom of body movement an important consideration in their design. Present day corset-wearers usually tighten the corset just enough to reduce waists to dimensions that range from 18 to 24 inches. As a result of the above many people still believe all corsets are uncomfortable and wearing them restricts women’s lives, citing Victorian literature devoted to sensible or hygienic dress. However, these writings were most apt to protest against the misuse of corsets for tight-lacing; they were less vehement against corsets per se. Many reformers recommended “Emancipation bodices”, which were essentially tightly fitted vests, like full-torso corsets without boning. Most women don’t own or have never worn a corset. However if

943-7296 you’re looking for a fashion garment that accentuates your curves and bust line, a corset can be your best friend. A corset is a garment that covers your lower torso from bust line to waist. The sides have curved shaped ribbing that gives your body the classic hourglass shape. These ribs are usually made a thin lightweight metal or hard plastic. While these ribs do push your body into certain shapes, they aren’t ‘trainer’ corsets that pose health hazards to your internal organs. To wear a corset, first loosen the strings that are located on the back of the garment. There is usually a zipper in the front of the corset, unzip it and wrap the garment around your torso. Align it so the strings are in the back and close the zipper. Now grab the strings and gently but firmly pull to tighten. Pull the strings until the corset is snug and firm. Do not pull the strings so tight that you can’t move or breathe comfortably. The first thing that you’ll notice is your bust line is now enhanced and you will probably be showing more cleavage than you are used to. While this is normal it does take some getting used to. Many women with a large bust find a corset is more comfortable to wear, as it gives them more support than a standard bra. Most corsets fall into the category of intimate apparel. They come in a wide variety of fabrics such as satin,
silk, or lace and an array of colours. You can find something that allows you to be as modest or daring as you desire. If your corset comes with a garter belt and stockings be sure to put on the stockings before the corset, it’s just easier. Corsets are also moving out of the bedroom and being worn as outwear. There, corsets are very similar to traditional corsets but available in decorative and luxurious fabrics. They may not be appropriate for a Monday morning office staff meeting but are great for an informal party or night at a club. If you’ve never worn a corset and would like to try one start with an outwear corset first, they are generally easier and more comfortable to wear. However, moderate corset lacing is not incompatible with vigorous activity. In fact, during the late nineteenth century, when corset wearing was common, there were sport corsets specifically designed to wear while cycling, playing tennis, or horseback riding, as well as for maternity wear. Most modern day corsetwearers will testify that corsets can be comfortable, once one is accustomed to wearing them. A well fitted corset should be very comfortable. Around the world, people celebrated the triple convergence of 11s with a splash. Some 1,000 ethnic Chinese couples exchanged vows across Malaysia on a date viewed as auspicious and romantic. In China, a special “1111” train started at 11:11 a.m. on the No. 11 line in Shanghai. “The numbers rhyme with one husband, one wife and one soul in Chinese and signifies a marriage that would last a lifetime,” said nurse Pua Kim Giok, 25, who tied the knot with engineer Lee Chin Siong, 27. They were among 460 couples who got married at the popular Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur. Not everyone was smiling, however. Egypt’s antiquities authority closed the largest of the Great Pyramid of Giza following rumors that groups would try to hold spiritual ceremonies on the site at 11:11. The authority’s head Mustafa Amin said in a statement Friday that the pyramid of Khufu, also known as Cheops, would be closed until Saturday morning for “necessary maintenance.” The closure followed a string of unconfirmed reports in local media that unknown groups would try to hold “Jewish” or “Masonic” rites on the site. Amin said all reports of planned ceremonies at the site were “completely lacking in truth.” The rest of the complex, which includes two other large pyramids, numerous tombs and the Sphinx, and is one of Egypt’s biggest tourist attractions, remained open Friday, though security appeared to be heavier than usual. Venezuela hunts for Ramos and his kidnappers CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan authorities said Friday they are confident they can quickly solve the kidnapping of Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos. The abduction on Wednesday was the first known kidnapping of a major leaguer in a country that has scores of players on big league rosters, and it has brought a renewed focus on rising violent crime in Venezuela. Deputy Justice Minister Edwin Rojas said investigators are making progress in gathering evidence and have physical descriptions of the kidnappers based on the accounts of relatives. “We have faith in the quick resolution of this case,” Rojas told state television. He said President Hugo Chavez’s government “is working 24 hours a day to solve this case.” Armed men seized Ramos at gunpoint Wednesday outside his home in a workingclass neighborhood in the city of Valencia. Authorities said Thursday that they had found a stolen SUV used by the kidnappers abandoned

in a nearby town. Neighbors held a candlelight vigil outside his home and prayed for Ramos, as did fans at a baseball game in Valencia on Thursday. At games in three Venezuelan stadiums Thursday night, players and fans observed a minute of silence in support of Ramos. Some held signs reading: “Free Wilson Ramos!” Teams added green to their uniforms, some sporting a green ribbon on one shoulder, others a green “W’’ for Wilson embroidered on their jerseys. Security has increasingly become a concern for Venezuelan players and their families as a rising wave of kidnappings has hit the wealthy as well as the middle class. Venezuelan police said 618 kidnappings were reported in 2009, and the numbers have grown rapidly in recent years. In 1998, when Chavez was elected, just 52 kidnappings were reported. SYDNEY (AP) — It was the shot of the day Friday at the Australian Open, and one that made the Tiger Woods of today look ominously like the one of yesterday. Standing about 280 yards from the green on the par5 eighth hole at The Lakes, Woods grabbed his 3-wood, flushed it with a slight fade into a brisk breeze and rolled it on to the green. Two putts later, his birdie helped him to a 5-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Australian veteran Peter O’Malley going into the weekend. That impressed one of his playing partners, Australian Robert Allenby, who missed the cut after rounds of 75-73, but who still seemed to enjoy the front-row seat to Woods’ apparent resurgence. “Probably in the last six months, that’s the best I’ve seen him play,” Allenby said in the scorers’ area while Woods was mobbed by autograph seekers. “I’ve seen him at his absolute best ... that was a different human being. He’s on his way back, that’s for sure. “I think where he is right now is good enough to win. I think you’ll find if he keeps going the way he is going, he’ll win over the weekend.” Woods, who was at 9-under 135, thought Friday’s round might even have been better — “it felt it could have been 8 or 9 deep.”

Fabio Capello has confirmed that Frank Lampard will captain England against Spain on today - but John Terry will return as skipper against Sweden. But the England manager insists Terry - who is subject of a police inquiry over claims he racially abused QPR’s Anton Ferdinand - is innocent until proven guilty of those allegations. “I decided everything [selectionwise] before what happened,” said Capello. “He will be on the bench against Spain but play against Sweden on Tuesday.” Capello insists Chelsea defender Terry has his full support while the Football Association and police probe claims of alleged racist abuse against him. “He is innocent until proven guilty,” the England manager added. “Absolutely. I need to respect every

decision but I cannot speak about it.” It will be the second time Lampard has captained his country - and the Chelsea midfielder insists team-mate Terry was fine, despite the allegations against him. Lampard, who was skipper when England defeated Denmark 2-1 in Copenhagen in February 2011, said: “He’s coping just fine - as he’s always coped. “We’ve always had our moments in football, me included, but he has a very strong character.
