Charles “Killa” Whittaker’s chance of becoming champion of the world took a huge step closer after his latest triumph in the ring. The West Bayer leapt into number two spot in the world rankings after a unanimous points victory in Miami over Cuban Giorbis Barthelemy. And as he recovers in Florida, Killa says his management team is in discussions to hold the biggest fight of his life on home soil. The 37-year-old said: “I do not have the words to express how happy I would be if I could fight for the title in Cayman. It would just be a fantastic opportunity and it is possible. “If the people of Cayman could watch me fight for the title with their own eyes on home soil then it would be fantastic. Fireworks, trials, and cardboard boats end Pirates Week

JML International were the proud victors in what has become one of the most popular events in Pirates Week – the Cardboard Boat race at Hog Sty Bay. The winning team just managed to get to the shore one second ahead of the Cayman Mechanical team, who appeared to have thought they’d won too. The turnout was spectacular, with every participant making a great soggy splash this year with some truly amazing cardboard creations. There was a stunning Star Trek style Starship Enterprise boat covered in silver paper. Then there was a huge red and white toadstool, paddled by smurfs There was a boat made from a huge piece of Swiss cheese, run by the local branch of a Swiss bank and, appropriately enough, a mini cardboard pirate ship manned by the team from Margaritaville. A huge turtle came paddling ashore next and one of the boats, called the Sinkfast, was paddled by a crew dressed like Hawaiians, complete with flowery Lei necklaces Some of the boats didn’t make it. Being made of cardboard, they got all soggy and capsized. Their fearless teams brought them in just the same, somehow managing to paddle and swim the soggy cardboard ashore. every boat made it safely to shore. Their crews, undaunted, kept paddling to the bitter end, as their boats sank lower and lower. Some teams only made it to shore by swimming, and holding on to fragments of waterlogged cardboard. Digicel had a bright red boat, paddled by an early incarnation of Santa, accompanied by several Mrs Santas. There were plenty of other events on the last day of Pirates Week, including a Walking on Water competition, a High School Paddle Board Race Relay, and a snapper cook-off competition, to see just who could cook up the tastiest snapper. But the highlight of the evening came with the Trial of the Pirates, when the pirates are traditionally found guilty of holding the Cayman Islands to hostage for a week and
kidnapping the Governor. This year things got a bit complicated as the pirates in question were actually on trial for being in fancy dress. The fireworks display, heralding the end of Pirates Week, was one of the most spectacular end-of-piratesweek displays ever.

Man stabbed during assault A man received stab wounds following a fight outside a bar in the early hours of Sunday morning. It is thought that the victim was refused entry to Jah T’s on McField Lane just before 1am. A fight then started and the man, a 42 year old, received multiple stab wounds to his body. He was taken to George Town Hospital. A spokesman for the RCIPS said: “At about 12:49 AM on 20th November 2011 911 received a report that a 42-year-old male had been physically assaulted by a few males on the outside of a George Town business. “Apparently, the victim went to the place, but he was not welcomed by his assailants and a fight ensued. As a result of the fight, the victim sustained multiple stab wounds, lacerations and bruises to various parts of his body. “The Police and medics personnel attended the scene, and the victim was transported to the George Town Hospital where he was admitted and medically treated for his injuries, which are non-life threatening. At about 11:00 AM today the Hospital discharged the victim.” Anyone who was in the area at the relevant time who witnessed the incident, or has any information which could assist police, should contact George Town police station on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).

Environmental officials said yesterday they were waiting for the weather to clear before examining possible reef damage caused by a Thursday night boat wreck and fuel spill in the North Sound. However, 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel loosed into the water had evaporated by Sunday afternoon, leaving little trace, while marine police remained at the scene on Monday, clearing debris from the wreck and the reef. Department of Environmental Health Chief Marine Enforcement Officer Mark Orr said he was waiting for a break in the weather to examine the site, just north of the Sand Bar, for possible damage. “The spill didn’t spread very wide,” he said yesterday. “The outflow was about 150 yards and was sucked out to sea. It was a very thin sheet and evaporated very quickly. There was a bit of a diesel smell, and that was a little uncomfortable at first.” Salvage boats from nearby Harbour House Marina were unable to vacuum up the fuel that had “slowly spilled from Friday into Saturday,” Mr Orr said, “but by Sunday it was all gone.” Marine police were standing by to investigate, “and as soon as the weather breaks, we’ll assess any damage,” he said. Meanwhile, Marine Police Sergeant Dewey Ebanks, among the first to

arrive at the scene following the initial “NivenD” Marine Unit response late Thursday night, said he was unsure how the accident had happened, but no contraband had been found aboard the 72-foot fiberglass-hulled Pacemaker motor cruiser, dubbed “Flight”. “It still remains a mystery what happened,” Sergeant Ebanks said. “I don’t have the full story.” The two crew, Australian males, 35 years old and 38 years old, were unhurt. “They came into North Sound because of bad weather and I don’t know how they missed the head of the main channel. ‘There is nothing left of the boat here on the reef, except the stern and another piece. The engine is sitting right on top of the reef. Harbour House Marina is doing most of the salvage. Anything we determine as a navigational hazard we’ll take into
storage,” he said. He declined to discuss the cargo on “Flight”, acknowledging something was being transported, but it was “not illegal. You’ll have to wait for the official police statement.” The boat, he said, had been en route from Cuba, stopping in Cayman because of bad weather. An earlier police statement said the boat had originated in Miami, planning to navigate the Panama Canal en route to Australia. Police investigations would resume when the weather broke, Sergeant Ebanks said, “but we hope to finish operations today, possibly tomorrow.” Mr Orr said, inclement weather meant “no one has been able to assess what was on [the boat] or the condition of the reef,” but crewmen were helping investigators.

PM takes control KINGSTON, Jamaica - Prime Minister Andrew Holness has taken temporary control of an initiative touted as the country’s single largest, most comprehensive infrastructural programme after the Auditor General identified serious management shortcomings. The multi-million dollar Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP) was previously the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport and Works headed by Mike Henry. However, PM Holness took over in the wake of the findings of a special report by Auditor General Pamela Monroe Ellis, which was tabled in Parliament early last week. That report found that the programme was not being executed transparently, and suffered from inadequate capital project planning, monitoring and record keeping, which threatened its primary objective. Patrick Wong, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Works Agency, which had programme oversight, has resigned at the request of the Minister of Transport and Works, a government statement said. “An interim head will be named shortly,” the statement added. PM Holness said the JDIP would be reviewed to improve its accounting, reporting and general management structures. “The services of an independent consulting firm are being procured to provide oversight, and quality assurance to determine value for money,” the government statement noted. “The Independent Consultant will operate from the Office of the Prime Minister and provide technical advice on project prioritisation, evaluate the various work activities, review payment certificates and work orders, as well as, provide project management oversight of JDIP.”

Pastor Al Ebanks loses fight Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com
It was with much sadness I learnt of Pastor Al’s death last Saturday (19). He had been fighting a brain tumour for some time and there was real hope he would make a full recovery. Sadly, he died around 7pm on Friday evening. He was much loved throughout the Cayman Islands and when I first met him he was selling my wife, Joan, a one-piece jump suit in a clothing store he had on Fort Street! His real name was Alden A. Ebanks and he was ordained a minister of the Christian Church in 1987. His first congregation was the church known as “The Church on Hospital Road” because that was where it was situated, near the George Town Hospital. It was later to become officially known as the Agape Family Worship Centre in its present location on Fairbanks Road. Pastor Al served as Chairman of the Cayman Ministers Association from 2001-2006 and was Chairman of the Cayman Islands Constitutional Commission, which is responsible for reviewing Cayman’s governance arrangements with the United Kingdom. He was also Chairman of the Health Services Authority Board from August 2005 until September 2009. He also served at the Marine Institute and the National Youth Commission. He was a recipient of the Certificate and Badge of Honour from the Cayman Islands government. Following Hurricane Ivan, he led efforts to process applications and identify those most in need of assistance. Messages of condolences have come from nearly all the various congregations and denominations of the Islands’ Christian Churches and other organisations and individuals including Wil Pineau, Chief Executive of the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce and Health Minister, Hon. Mark Scotland. Premier, Hon. McKeeva Bush said the country had lost a “good man.” Opposition leader, Hon. Alden McLaughlin said, “I don’t know that there’s any other person in Cayman that has that level of love and respect as Pastor Al.” The last time I spoke to Pastor Al to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
was when he phoned me in May to ask whether there was any memorabilia left over from the International Soprano Lisa Carlisle concert at The Wharf commemorating the Royal Wedding. He said he wanted something “for my dear wife, Kathy.” Unfortunately everything had been sold. He was a compassionate and loving man. A real example of a “Man of God.”
He is preceded in death by his eldest son and survived by his wife Kathy and two children. Rev. Nicholas Sykes, speaking on behalf of the Cayman Ministers’ Association said, “We give grateful thanks to the Lord for the gift and privilege of knowing such a good shepherd and guide, having him as our friend and benefiting from his outstanding leadership.”

NYC mayor: al-Qaida sympathiser arrested NEW YORK (AP) — An “al-Qaida sympathiser” who plotted to bomb police and post offices in New York City as well as U.S. troops returning home has been arrested on numerous terrorism-related charges, city officials said Sunday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced at a news conference the Saturday arrest of Jose Pimentel of Manhattan, “a 27-year-old al-Qaida sympathiser” who the mayor said was motivated by terrorist propaganda and resentment of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. The mayor said Pimentel, a U.S. citizen originally from the Dominican
Republic, was “plotting to bomb police patrol cars and also postal facilities as well as targeted members of our armed services returning from abroad.” Authorities have no evidence that Pimentel was working with anyone else, the mayor added. “He appears to be a total lone wolf,” the mayor said. “He was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad.” Instead, Bloomberg said, Pimentel represents the type of threat FBI Director Robert Mueller has warned about as U.S. forces erode the ability of terrorists to carry out large scale attacks.

Top Khmer Rouge leaders’ trial opens in Cambodia PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodians were bluntly reminded of their tragic history Monday as the trial began of three top Khmer Rouge leaders accused of orchestrating Cambodia’s “killing fields” in the late 1970s. After Judge Nil Nonn declared the trial open, the prosecution started its case at the U.N.-backed tribunal — more than three decades after the Southeast Asian country witnessed some of the 20th century’s worst atrocities. An estimated 1.7 million people died of execution, starvation, exhaustion or
lack of medical care as a result of the Khmer Rouge’s radical policies, which essentially turned all of Cambodia into a forced labour camp as the movement attempted to create a pure agrarian socialist society. The defendants are old and infirm, and there are fears they won’t live long enough for justice to be done. On Monday, they sat side by side with their lawyers in the courtroom especially built for the tribunal, as the prosecutors read opening statements describing the scope of their alleged crimes. One man, vote for all
I quote from Wikipedia: ‘“One man, one vote’ (or one person, colin.wilson@ieyenews.com one vote) is a slogan that has been used in many parts of the world where campaigns have arisen for universal suffrage. It became particularly prevalent in less developed countries, during the period of decolonisation and the struggles for national sovereignty from the late 1940s onwards. It was used in this form in an important legal case in the United States, the United States Supreme Court majority opinion of “Reynolds v. Sims”, issued in 1964.” The meaning “one man, one vote” means legislative districts need to be divided according to population, so that each person, and therefor each interest, has an equal amount of representation in government. The “Reynolds v. Sims” ruling held state political districts of unequal size resulted in under-representation of some citizens’ interests and over-representation of others. In order to meet constitutional standards, districts had to be reapportioned so each had approximately equal population. The position here at the moment is if there is an election, a person will be able to vote for more than one candidate. In other words, a strong candidate, say the premier Hon. McKeeva Bush, can take two or three much weaker persons with him because they are a team. If there was ‘One man, one vote’, the larger districts like George

Town, West Bay and Bodden Town would be divided up into equal divisions based on population. The system is fairer because one gets proportional representation and one person accountable to his or her neighbourhood. The present constitution would appear to call for a single member vote but when North Side MLA, Ezzard Miller, brought the motion of “one man, one vote” to the L.A. last Thursday (17) so as to amend the election law in line with the constitution, it was defeated by the government. “I cannot find any dictionary that defines ‘an’ as four,” Mr. Miller said. “No other country in the modern day has such a convoluted system as what we have. The constitution sets out clearly in section 92 that eligible persons can vote for an elected member showing the intent of one man-one vote.” It is unfortunate that the previous government, the PPM (People’s Progressive Movement) didn’t make the wording clearer. I would have hoped that the members who voted against it would have voiced their reasons. There are some excellent government people there, including back-benchers and I, like many members of the public, would have liked to hear their reasons. Whilst I can come up with one I don’t imagine they would have wanted to voice it. A week is a year in politics and an election is still a long way off. Silence is golden, but this decision gives even more weight to the dissatisfaction much of the population has with this government.

Who is the boy?” “His name is Erastus Pronando,” began Anne; “and—” “Pronando?” cried Katharine Vanhorn, in a loud, bewildered voice—”Pronando? And his father’s name?” “John, I believe,” said Anne, startled by the change in the old face. “But he has been dead many years.” Old Katharine rose; her hands trembled, her eyes flashed. “You will give up this boy at once and forever,” she said, violently, “or my compact with you is at an end.” “How can I, grandaunt? Miss Vanhorn waved her hand for silence. “If you will let me tell you, aunt—” The old woman bounded forward suddenly, as if on springs, seized her niece by both shoulders, and shook her with all her strength. “There!” she said, breathless. “Will you stop talking! All I want is your answer—yes, or no.” The drawing room of Madame Moreau had certainly never witnessed such a sight as this. One of its young ladies shaken—yes, absolutely shaken like a refractory child! The very chairs and tables seemed to tremble, and visibly hope that there was no one in the salon des élèves, behind. Anne was more startled than hurt by her grandaunt’s violence. “I am sorry to displease you,” she said, slowly and very gravely; “but I can not break my engagement.” Without a word, Miss Vanhorn drew her shawl round her shoulders, pinned it, crossed the room, opened the door, and was gone. A moment later her carriage rolled away, and Anne, alone in the drawing room, listened to the sound of the wheels growing fainter and fainter, with a chilly mixture of blank surprise, disappointment, and grief filling her heart. “But it was right that I should tell her,” she said to herself as she went up stairs —”It was right.”

Perhaps Aunt Gretta will know.” Miss Teller did not know; but one of the husky-voiced old gentlemen who kept up the “barrier, sir, against modern innovation,” remembered the particulars (musty and dusty now) of Kate Vanhorn’s engagement to one of the Pronandos—the wild one who ran away. He was younger than she was, a handsome fellow (yes, yes, he remembered it all now), and “she was terribly cut up about it, and went abroad immediately.” Abroad— great panacea for American woes! To what continent can those who live “abroad” depart when trouble seizes them in its pitiless claws?

Are you for or against the death penalty?

Every evening when we sit back on our sofas and relax, we watch TV. Many of the shows depict violent action. We watch as people are murdered, but we find it exciting and are entertained. What would the consequences be if some of these episodes were moved into real life? A verdict can be very strict, the most cruel verdict of all. Murderers can be charged with the death penalty. Nowadays we have a conflict on this basis. Should one be condemned to death or get a life sentence? If it’s the second option is that really enough punishment? Those who stand for the death penalty always use the famous Bible Old Testament quotation “An eye for an eye.” They also refer to the Bible reciting one of the Ten Commandments “Thou shalt not kill”, and the punishment is therefore death. Revenge is a powerful motivator to take actions. Understandably, a person who has had a relative murdered wants the perpetrator to suffer as much as their beloved has. The ‘Death Penalty’ was widely used in the past and for different purposes. For example you were beheaded for stealing cattle during the Frankish Empire; you could be tortured and killed for betrayal in Old England, and you could be fed to the dogs for killing a lord in Old Germany and so on. There are hundreds of examples of retaliatory sentences. The question I ask is: Do we possess the authority of God to take somebody’s life even if he/she took somebody else’s? Are we to judge other people? Jesus, in the New Testament, preached love. “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you,” (Luke 6:27-28) and, we are to “turn the other cheek” when we have been struck. (Matt. 5:39) Nowadays saying “An eye for an eye” is oldfashioned and out of touch with present times. You would not kill a cat because he accidentally scratched you. We live in a democratic, free state where everybody is equal before the law and have to behave as such. In Europe there is no country left where the death penalty still exists. Not that long ago, Europe was eager to execute anybody and everybody who went against the law. The ways to punish became milder, easier, and faster. Step by step, the death penalty was cancelled because of victory of humanism over revenge. There is no Death Penalty here in the Cayman Islands although it remained in the statute book

up until 1991. The United States remains in the minority of nations in the world that still uses death as penalty for certain crimes. Other countries are China, Japan and many Asian and Middle Eastern countries, plus some African states. Many see the penalty as barbaric whilst others see it as a very important tool in fighting violent pre-meditated murder. In the USA there are two recent incidents which have once again brought this issue to national debate. One is the release of some highly publicised studies that show a number of innocents had been put to death. If DNA testing had been carried out, they would have been found innocent. The second is the issue of terrorism and the need to punish its perpetrators. A popular bumper sticker says, “We kill people to show people that killing people is wrong.” The slogan is wrong because the Death Penalty does not punish people for killing but only for murder. If it is morally wrong to rape rapists, is it acceptable to execute murderers? The answer there is easy. If you rape a rapist it does not stop him raping again. You kill a murderer he will not do it again. If killing someone is wrong then killing in self-defense is also wrong. Are then police officers guilty in killing attempted murderers to save a victim’s life?
Is it wrong to just lock someone up for murder? He gets a life sentence in an air conditioned cell, free meals three times a day, personal recreation time and regular visits from friends and family. The way things are going the human rights commissions will see that all prisons are actually a very nice place to go. Then there is the argument to re-educate our murderers and turn them into civilised members of our society. Of course, that is at the tax payer’s expense - us, including the relatives of the person the prisoner murdered. Is the Death Penalty applied fairly? Many say it isn’t. If this is the case then this argument applies to all sentences. What is my view? I am not God and I would never dare play God. Have any of you read the Apocryphal Book of Judith? Judith murdered a terrorist in his sleep because he had murdered hundreds of people and was going to rape her, give her to his men for their pleasure and then have her killed. The terrorist (Holofernes) did not know she knew this and she had prayed to God to give her a lying tongue to deceive him before he did this to her and the strength to kill him by decapitating him with his own sword. Thanksgiving: facts and myths

The legend of Thanksgiving goes back more than 350 years. Is the story how the Pilgrims (Fred and Ethel?) spent Thanksgiving with the Natives and ate fully, really true? There are many John Wayne impersonators all over the Internet at this time with impressionists saying things like, “Well Pilgrim, I see you’re still protecting the ladies” and “Hey, Pilgrim, hand me those mashed potatoes won’t you?” Another story doing the rounds is, the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 on a big rock on the east coast and was highlighted when a Native American drove the first Plymouth into the middle of the festivities? Some older accounts of Thanksgiving history state that Pocahontas joined Captain Myles Standoffish for the first Thanksgiving celebration, but revisionist history states this isn’t so as Pocahontas actually died just a few short years before the first celebration. According to new data in regards to the history of Thanksgiving, it is now known that the body of Pocahontas was dug up for the celebration and propped up at the end of the table. She was regarded as the wise old aunt who barely spoke a word and probably had a buzz on as she was smiling the whole time. Again in 1621, Governor William Bradford declared Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday, but since the Revolutionary War had yet to take place, no one knew what this meant. It wasn’t until George Washington was President in 1789, that he had the power, after the Revolutionary War to declare Thanksgiving as a national holiday. After doing so, George promptly bit into a huge turkey leg and split in two his fine wooden teeth! The true story is this: The Wampanoag Indians were descendants of the Iroquois who had spent their time in New England for thousands of years. The tribe lived off

the land by hunting deer and other animals in the summer and early fall, fishing salmon and herring in the spring and then moved farther inland during the winter to seek shelter from the storms. The group lived along the coastal region in round-roofed houses called ‘wigwams’ unlike the Midwest Indians who used teepees in order to travel quickly. The people were friendly and hospitable towards strangers. However a group of English travellers had saddened villages across the region by bringing disease and capturing many to be sold on the slave market. One of the villages, Patuxet, demolished by the English was one of a famous Native American, Squanto. Squanto was a Native American who befriended John Weymouth (an English Explorer) and headed back to England in order to learn their customs speak English and become Christian. During his stay, a British Slaver captured Squanto and sold him to the Spanish in the Caribbean. Luckily a Spanish Franciscan priest helped Squanto back to England where he would pay Weymouth to bring him back to his homeland. On his return home Squanto had realised his village was deserted and left with skeletons. The neighbouring tribe of Wampanoag took Squanto in and treated him as their own. In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers— an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first
brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore. As the weeks went on the Pilgrims grew weaker and couldn’t survive much longer. Luckily, the Wampanoag came to the rescue. The Wampanoag brought food and hospitality towards the people. Since Squanto spoke English he easily communicated with the Pilgrims and showed them how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. The two groups then spent three days together talking about the land and eating food. There is no record of what type of food was on the menu. As the Pilgrims did not have an oven I am not sure my earlier article on the subject suggesting they ate pies is therefore correct. As the years passed, more Pilgrims came and forgot about the friendly Natives. They stole land, tortured and enslaved the Wampanoag while the rest were left foodless and with disease. For many, Thanksgiving is a time for rejoicing and thankfulness for what our ancestors had endured during the early years, but for the Wampanoag it is a time they would like to forget. For more than two centuries, Thanksgiving days have been celebrated by individual colonies and states. Research to provide data to strengthen civil society All non-profit and nongovernmental organisations that comprise civil society, one of the fastest growing sectors in the Cayman Islands, are being encouraged to participate in a groundbreaking study to examine the sector’s unique needs and challenges. This research will be broad in scope covering non-profit and nongovernmental agencies (e.g. the Cancer Society, Special Olympics) as well as churches and professional associations that all are included in the civil society sector. The key outcome of the research project is to build capacity of civil society in the Cayman Islands to encourage their role as advocates, and supporters of good governance in our community. The research is co-sponsored by the Governor’s Office and the Office of the Premier and is being conducted by Innotiva Ltd. There is estimated to be over 250 section 80 companies (charities) operating in the Cayman Islands. There are also other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) who are active in the community but are not registered companies. While Government and the private sector support a significant number of CSOs, there are many unanswered questions about the role, scope, finances, and activity areas of these organisations as well as the impact of these organisations on the community at large. Governor Duncan Taylor explained, “The Cayman Islands and the Caribbean Overseas Territories as a whole are undergoing significant social, economic and environmental transformation. This research will provide a comprehensive picture of the civil society sector in the Cayman Islands, identifying their sphere of activity and influence in the community. I am pleased that my Office is able to support this worthwhile and important exercise.’” The research is being supported by a survey that will be accessible to the public online. With Thanksgiving less than a week away, you most likely have plans in place. Whether you are hosting a potluck dinner, cooking an entire meal, or visiting a special restaurant…I hope you have a wonderfully blessed day. Now…on with the cooking! After the turkey, the most anticipated dish is the dressing/ stuffing. Many people wonder what the difference is. Quite simply the dressing is cooked in a separate dish and stuffing is literally placed in the turkey cavity. Today, most chefs agree that cooking stuffing in the bird is not safe. When the turkey is done, the stuffing is not and the juices from the turkey are not at safe temperature. If you bake the dish long enough for the stuffing to cook, the bird is overdone. Besides, you would miss the crusty bits that are oh so good! Every family has its own dressing recipe. I wouldn’t begin to compete. Whether you add sausage, oysters, fruits or nuts, this is the time to enjoy your tradition. Mine is a simple southern style cornbread dressing and regardless of where my daughter celebrates Thanksgiving, she insists on
eating my dressing. A few years back we shared the day with my best friend, Connie and her family. Her daughter, Brandi, and mine, Kristie, are also best friends. Both girls were insisting on “their mom’s” dressing. Brandi decided that we would have a cook-off. Connie chops celery and onions in a food processor then adds them to the bread raw. (I should add she makes the best cornbread!) I hand dice everything to exact greatness and sauté in butter until

perfection. I make my own bread croutons and cornbread, spending much more time on the dish. When the “dressing battle” began, Brandi announced that she couldn’t tell a bit of difference between the two. Now that is funny and should have been a lesson learned, but I will continue to pamper my dishes in the name of “tradition.” As I said, I wouldn’t compete with your family recipe, so I decided to give you one that is different and really great any time of year.

Directions • Preheat oven to 350 degrees • Bake Mexican cornbread per package directions. • Cut in half after baking and use only half. • Sauté diced bacon in large skillet until done, but not crispy. • Add onion to skillet on medium low heat. • Sauté about five minutes. German police suspect suicide attempt by referee COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — A referee in Germany’s top league was found bleeding in his hotel bathtub Saturday hours before he was to work a game in what police suspect was a suicide attempt. Babak Rafati was in stable condition but will need “intensive treatment” and be hospitalised for some time, German Football Federation President Theo Zwanziger said. Donovan, Beckham lead LA Galaxy to MLS title CARSON, Calif. (AP) — David Beckham thrust the shiny silver trophy above his Los Angeles Galaxy teammates’ heads, and a sold-out stadium roared for its hometown team through a blizzard of confetti. Although Beckham’s five-year American odyssey hasn’t always gone according to script, he clearly learned a little something about Hollywood endings along the way. Landon Donovan scored in the 72nd minute on passes from Robbie Keane and Beckham, and the Galaxy’s three superstars won their first MLS Cup together with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday night. The trio’s beautiful goal highlighted another brute demonstration of the Galaxy’s dominance in perhaps the greatest season for any MLS club. Los Angeles had the second-best record in league history during the regular season before barreling through the playoffs without a loss to win the franchise’s third title. Beckham was brilliant throughout the postseason, contributing four assists and controlling play in midfield despite injuries to his back and hamstrings. “We’ve been through a lot this season,” Beckham said. “We’ve had a lot of games. Bruce and his staff are the ones that got us to this game tonight.” Los Angeles had the most expensive and eyecatching roster in MLS history, but the Galaxy got full value from their three highest-priced players, particularly in the playoffs. Although the 36-year-old global icon insists he hasn’t decided where he’ll play next year, the Galaxy hope Beckham extends his California sojourn for at least another season. The Galaxy fanatics in the Angel City Brigade supporters’ section chanted “We want Beckham!” after the match as Beckham took a long tour of the pitch with his sons. “It’s been the most enjoyable time of my career in America over the last year, and this just tops it off,” said Beckham, whose services are coveted by Paris Saint-Germain and a handful of British clubs. “I’ve said before, I need to sit back and relax and enjoy this moment, and then I’ll figure out what I’m going to do next year. I might talk in the past tense sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I’m leaving. It’s been an amazing five years.”

There were three finals being played at the KPMG Legends tennis finals at the Ritz Carlton tennis courts. The Junior Finals came first, with Alex Leonard beating William Hayward six sets to three. The singles final was between Thomas Blake and Wayne Ferreira. Ferreirra won the first game decisively, but then it looked as though Blake was going to get the upper hand, and at one stage in the match Blake was ahead of Ferreira by six games to four. But Ferreira caught up, bringing the score up to seven games all. The game was decided with a 12-point tie break, won decisively by Wayne Ferreira, 7 points to 1. It was with the mixed doubles that the evening’s entertainment really got into full swing, however. Chanda Rubin and Murphy Jensen formed one side, and Martina Hingis with Mark Philippoussis on the other In the end, Martina Hingis and Mark Philippoussis won the match eight games to five, but the entertainment came equally from the tennis, as well as from the players funny antics and witty quips - which never seemed to stop. The comedian of the match was surely Murphy Jensen, who pulled funny faces, and got up to all kinds of mischief, even jumping

over the net to play a shot from his teammate. The feel-good factor was high throughout the match, and plenty of laughter from the crowd, with all players throughout the match really having fun. It was, after all for two really good causes. Cayman Crisis Centre and the Junior Tennis Federation were the two organisations which benefitted from the whole tournament’s proceeds.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday and his brother was arrested as a suspect, Dutch police said. Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels said police were called to a home in the port city in the early hours of the morning and found the 24-year-old Dutch player bleeding from a stab wound. The officers and ambulance paramedics were unable to resuscitate Halman. Wessels said the officers arrested Halman’s 22-year-old brother. She declined to give his name, in line with Dutch privacy rules. “He is under arrest and right now he is being questioned,” Wessels told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “It will take some time to figure out what exactly happened.” No charges have been filed in the case. Halman hit .230 in 35 games and made starts at all three outfield positions for the Mariners in 2011 before being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. Because he played professionally in the United States, Halman was not part of the Netherlands team that won the Baseball World Cup in Panama last month. The Dutch beat Cuba 2-1 in the final to become the first European team to win the title. Born in the city of Haarlem, Halman played in the Dutch Pro League and was part of the goldmedal winning Dutch squad at the 2007 European Championship.
