MINI MAKEOVERS

Budget friendly ideas to freshen up your space

Whether you’re fatigued by seeing the same decor every day or simply looking for an opportunity to refresh indoor spaces with an appealing mini makeover, rethinking your favorite room in the house doesn’t need to be an expensive ordeal. Even if your budget is tight, you can still make small changes to transform a room. Consider these ideas:

BY FAMILY FEATURES | PHOTO BY UPSPLASH

Bring stylish flair to your space with a new color scheme. Rather than replacing all the furniture, which can be costly, focus on smaller accessory pieces such as pillows and decorative items. Create variety by using multiple hues of the same color or mixing two or more complementary colors. Introduce new accent furniture. Smaller and less cost-prohibitive than centerpieces like a couch, for example, accent pieces such as end tables or a coffee table can provide subtle changes to the look of a room. You could also opt to refinish a piece of furniture you have on hand to create a look that’s all your own. Morph your room by simply rearranging what you already own. Adjusting the orientation of your furniture and decor can let you see your favorite room from a whole new perspective. Whether it’s a flea market find, such as an old window frame that you paint and add a display shelf to the base, or a series of photos from your favorite vacation destination, adding some DIY art can not only update your room, but make it more personal, too. A new look for your favorite room can go a long way, so find ways to update your space for a comfy retreat you can enjoy. Find more ideas at eLivingtoday.com. DAILY JOURNAL

If you haven’t done so already, it might be time to swap out the seasonal wardrobe. Why not reorganize the closet in the meantime?

8 | HOME Hancock homesMAGAZINE 16 TRENDS

BY CATHY HOBBS, TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES | PHOTOS BY TNS

WHERE TO BEGIN Before purchasing, plan. Planning is the first place one should begin when it comes to organization. The philosophy of “everything should have a place and be in place” is a good rule to be your guide.

DESIGN RECIPES SHORTCUT Purge. Take inventory. Decide. Before getting started on your closet organization journey, toss what you don’t need. If you haven’t worn something in over a year, it’s time for it to hit the donation or trash pile. Then, take inventory of what you want to keep, retaining those items that are your musthaves. Finish by deciding where you want categories of items to go. The items you use or wear often should be front and center and easily accessible.

WHAT TO BUY Depending on your budget, there are a host of options to create organization and order. Modest budget If you are on a modest budget, consider just adding shelving and bars for clothing, as cabinets and drawers are more intricate and costly. Medium budget Many retail stores offer various ready-made, off-the-shelf organization and cabinet options. If possible, meet with an in-house professional so that you can take advantage of their design and measuring services.

READY TO SPLURGE? If budget isn’t an overwhelming concern, built-ins are the way to go. Built-ins allow you to truly go custom. The process often involves a custom millworker or cabinetmaker creating “shop” drawings and then building cabinetry to order. Regardless of your budget, aim to create a closet organization plan that will serve your needs for various seasons and as you grow and build your wardrobe. DAILY JOURNAL Hancock Homes | 17 9

Set up the ultimate children’s workstation BY STATEPOINT

Want to help guarantee your child’s academic success? While you can’t control what goes on in the classroom, you can facilitate their study time at home by setting up an A+ workstation. Here’s how: 1. Choose a location: Select a location that’s well-lit, preferably with some natural light, and away from noise and distractions. Whether it’s your child’s bedroom or a corner of the dining area, the area should be large enough for all their supplies and tech to stay organized. 2. Use color wisely: Research has shown that certain colors have the power to boost productivity and creativity or promote a sense of calm. Decorating the space with care could potentially help your student weather crunch periods with ease. You may also opt to color code binders, dividers and other supplies by coursework so that your child can quickly identify the items they need. 3. Update technology: Equip the workstation with the latest technology and educational tools. For easy essay composition, your child’s suite of devices should include a tablet or laptop and a printer. To get your student prepped for math and science classes, be sure to supply them with a graphing calculator featur-

ing the latest capabilities. The fx9750GIII, for example, is not only stylishly available in trending colors, it’s capable of programming in CASIO Basic and MicroPython. With graph and statistical functions, exam compatibility mode and a suite educational resources, your student will be well prepared to take on all their STEM coursework and test prep. 4. Prevent clutter: Clutter can pile up all too easily, making it difficult to find notes and assignments. Keep the mess to a minimum with the addition of a few organizational tools. Hang a corkboard to post reminders and to-do lists. Add wall shelving or a sorting tray to keep papers filed by subject area or due date, and use small baskets or cups to collect erasers, paper clips and other small supplies. Finally, be sure the workstation has its own waste bin, so that items that are no longer needed can be efficiently tossed or recycled. 5. Consider ergonomics: Eliminate distractions by making sure the workstation is ergonomic-friendly and comfy. If your child sits at a desk, ensure their computer monitor is at eye level and that their feet touch the floor. Adjustable laptop tables can transform a makeshift work area on the couch or bed into a comfortable workstation.
