WHAT’S TRENDING IN ...

Snow removal By Jenn Willhite | PHOTO BY ADOBE STOCK

Indiana snowfalls may be unpredictable at best, but compact, lightweight and less toxic options for eco-friendly snow removal are taking the sting out of what is often a cold and dreaded chore. Battery-powered, single- and two-stage snow throwers are likely to be the main new thing this winter season, says Greg Dannemiller, owner of Dannemiller True Value Hardware & Service Center in Bargersville. Additional maintenance includes replacing the consumable parts when needed. Snow throwers have flights that are made of rubber and wear out with time. The thrower’s scraper bar, or shave plate, which makes contact with the hard surface to scrape the snow in the path of the spinning auger and flights, will likewise wear down eventually. “The biggest thing is the maintenance and service costs on a battery unit will be a lot less than on a gas-powered one,” Dannemiller says. “The downside of that is batteries are very expensive and, of course, that makes the machines a little bit more expensive initially.” Expect to get about 40 to 50 minutes of run time from a single charge. However, run time can be impacted by the depth and weight of the snow being removed, Dannemiller says. Heavy, wet snows will certainly impact run time. All battery-powered snow removal equipment should be stored in a conditioned space, like a garage, where freezing and exposure to the elements isn’t an issue. Avoid storing this type of equipment in uninsulated outdoor sheds that can be exposed to below freezing temperatures for extended periods of time, because no battery likes that, Dannemiller cautions. Typically, the starting price for a base model battery-powered snow thrower can run in the neighborhood of $150 or so, depending on the dealer and seasonal pricing specials. A quick online search reveals replacement battery costs range from around $50 to more than $300 depending on size and battery model. Those attached to their gas-powered units need not fear as they are still available and will be for the foreseeable future, Dannemiller adds. Falling in line with the eco-friendly benefits of battery powered equipment are the increasing numbers of eco- and pet-friendly snow removal products available this season. “We are seeing more and more products that are pet-friendly,” Dannemiller says. Organic ice melters offer more of a urea, magnesium or potassium base as opposed to something that has a sodium or calcium chloride base, Dannemiller says. Traditional ice melt products oftentimes ubiquitously use dyes of blue or green as a way to visibly identify what areas had received treatment. However, those dyes aren’t ideal and can create issues if consumed or otherwise accidentally imbibed or tracked into a dwelling. Today, artificial dyes have given way to pure ingredients that work in temperatures as low as minus 12 degrees, and they won’t stain shoes, paws or the surfaces on which they are applied. Tidying up

Most people ‘overwhelmed’ by messy home By statepoint | PHOTO BY adobe stock

While finances are a main topic that families fight over, a new survey discovers that cleaning and organizing also top the list. According to the survey, which was conducted by Duck brand, 76% of people feel “overwhelmed” by their family members’ messes. In fact, the research finds that messiness impacts relationships between family members: 46% of people say it causes “tension” between them; 35% say it causes arguments; and 33% say it is a “source of stress on a daily basis.” Knowing that disorganization impacts relationships, the survey aims to shed light on the source of the stress, as well as pet peeves families have when cleaning and organizing: • Arguments about tidying up may happen frequently because 74% of people say they have a different idea of what “clean and organized” is compared to other members of their household. Additionally, 44% say “cleaning and organizing frequency” is the most difficult task for their family to agree on. • Survey respondents say their top peeves about their family’s cleaning and organizing style is they procrastinate (56%) and they don’t like to clean/organize themselves at all (36%). According to 48% of survey respondents, another big annoyance is having to frequently remind other people in the home to pick up their belongings. When they don’t clean up after themselves,

most (58%) say it makes them feel annoyed and some say they feel angry/frustrated (29%). • Clutter in the living room is the “most annoying mess” that family members make on a regular basis, followed by not wiping up spills in the kitchen or fridge (45%), according to the results. Although there is a lot to disagree about when it comes to clutter, there is one thing families are aligned on: 85% believe “living in a tidy home leads to more harmony among household members.” There are simple solutions for a happier, more efficient home. Duck Brand’s Install EasyMounts interior drywall J hook in the hall closet, entryway or garage encourage family members to keep bags, hats and toys off the floor. If the kitchen is a messy hotspot, place Clear Classic EasyLiner shelf liner in the fridge to cut down on sticky spills. “Families are constantly on the go, so it is hard to keep up with daily tasks around the house,” said Angee Mantell, Insights & Innovation product manager at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “Implementing a few simple solutions can help teach tidy habits and encourage everyone at home to play their part in making spaces neat and clutter-free.” DAILY JOURNAL

The lavish look Steps for crafting luxurious interiors By Katie Laughridge, Tribune News Service | PHOTOS BY TNS

A

Achieving a lavish home doesn’t always require a hefty price tag. With a little creativity and strategic planning, you can transform your space into a haven without breaking the bank. Get ready to embark on a design journey that proves you can have the best of both worlds! 1. Define your style Defining your style is the essential first step when creating interior spaces. Understanding and honing in on your preferred aesthetic not only sets the tone for your design direction, but also ensures a cohesive look throughout your home. Whether your taste leans toward classic opulence, contemporary chic or eclectic elegance, defining your style provides a roadmap for selecting the right furniture, colors and decor that align with your vision. It also allows you to create a curated collection of pieces, creating a seamless and sophisticated ambiance. By clearly defining your style, you can confidently make decisions that elevate your space. 2. Invest in high-quality furniture Purchasing high-quality furniture is a crucial aspect of creating luxurious interior spaces, and it is an area where splurging is well worth it. High-quality pieces not only exude elegance but also offer unmatched comfort and durability. These exquisite furnishings become the focal points of your design, elevating the entire aesthetic and setting the stage for a captivating and refined living experience. From sumptuous fabrics to intricate detailing, each piece becomes a work of art that adds depth and allure. High-quality furniture is an investment that will pay dividends in the form of enduring beauty and a living space that truly reflects your style and aspirations. 3. when creating luxurious interior spaces, as it sets the tone of your home. Whether you opt for rich jewel tones to infuse a regal allure or embrace neutral hues for a serene atmosphere, the color palette you select plays a vital role in shaping the mood and character of each room. The key is to strike a harmonious balance between bold and subtle tones, allowing different shades to complement and enhance one another seamlessly. 4. Incorporate texture and layers Incorporating texture and layers is a hallmark of creating luxurious interior spaces, infusing your home with a sense of comfort and sophistication. By carefully selecting plush fabrics, sumptuous rugs and richly textured wall coverings, you can transform your living spaces into retreats. Layering tactile elements adds depth and visual interest, captivating the eye and enticing you to explore every corner of the room. From soft velvet upholstery that invites a refined relaxation to intricately woven rugs that ground the space, each piece contributes to a rich and indulgent environment. Embrace the art of layering by combining different textures, patterns and materials, creating a dynamic and inviting atmosphere. 5. Pay attention to lighting Lighting has the power to transform the mood of each room. To achieve the perfect lighting balance, consider incorporating a mix of natural light, chandeliers and other lighting fixtures and lamps. Natural light infuses a sense of openness and freshness, while chandeliers and other statement fixtures create focal points that draw the eye and add a touch of drama. Floor and table lamps are a must for most spaces, as they illuminate without being too harsh like overhead lighting can be. By strategically placing and layering lighting elements, you can achieve a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that showcases your interiors, allowing your luxurious living space to shine brightly day and night. Creating luxurious interiors is a journey that encompasses a harmonious blend of design elements and thoughtful choices. By embracing these five key steps, you unlock the door to a world of refined aesthetics and create a home that truly feels like a sanctuary of luxury. A dream bath Homeowners want seamless design, neutral colors and modern fixtures in their bathrooms By Jenn Willhite | PHOTOS BY ADOBE STOCK

10 HOME TRENDS MAGAZINE

O

Color, lighting and clean lines define the current bathroom remodeling trends. A simplistic approach takes the stagnant and dated to spacious, elegant and bright, say area experts. “Clients usually want the space to look bigger,” says Kim Davis, interior designer with Distinctive Kitchen & Bath Inc. in Greenwood. Of course, there are many ways to achieve the look one desires; however, it is simply a matter of vision, budget and patience, Davis says. It wasn’t that long ago that distinct grout lines of contrasting color dividing subway-style tiles of a bright, complimentary color were all the rage. Today, not so much. As foundational clean lines take center stage, minimal to no grout lines are at the top of the list of bathroom remodel must-haves, along with neutral hues that bring warmth and balance. “The number one thing my clients say is, ‘I don’t want to see grout lines,’” Davis says.

“People seem to be focused on grout lines right now where they don’t want to see them or want for them to be minimal, which means you will have to have a rectified tile so that you can push it as close together to about one sixteenth of an inch.” To achieve uniformity, a near-universal 1/16 inch spacing is used between tiles, says Tyler Crabb, owner of Crabb Home Services in Franklin. The days of using small 3-by-6-inch or 4-by12-inch subway tiles have given way to bolder looks using tiles as large as 4-by-4-feet and even 8-by-8 in some cases. When talking about trending tile colors, Davis says most are leaning into neutral palettes. Lighter subtle tones can go a long way to create the illusion of space, especially when combined with the right countertops and proper lighting. Quiet quartz’s natural, uniform design is replacing the busy composition of granite countertops for many homeowners, Davis says. Furthering the minimalist tone is the increasingly popular curbless shower. The lack of a threshold to step over offers more of a wetroom type of space rather than a traditional enclosed shower, Davis says. A downside of reimagining the traditional shower in this way can be found in the cost versus benefit. “They do cost a little more, but it is nice,” Crabb says. “The shower is pitched in such a way it butts up against the floor and there is really no curb at all.” In many cases, homeowners are either doing away with their bathtub altogether or they are trading their old drop-in tub for a freestanding one. Davis says many are embracing a sleek and modern slipper-style tub that further enforces the simplistic overall style of the space. Matte black, champaign bronze and brushed gold are the most requested finishes for bathroom fixtures, Davis and Cabb agree. “Matte black gives a modern feel,” Davis says. “And the champaign bronze warms it up.” Even if one has a steadfast loyalty to silver tones, brushed nickel is one finish that will likely never fall out of fashion. And for those who love their gold tones, there’s a more subtle and richer take on the traditional, shiny go-to, as a brushed gold option is making its mark with many homeowners, Cabb says. Not often mentioned, but worthy to note, is vanity heights have also had their own renaissance as the traditional 29½ inches has given way to ones of 34½ inches, Davis says. Flooring in the majority of bathroom remodels incorporates naturally-inspired, wood-look tiles and luxury vinyl plank that holds up well under the pressures of mess, stress and time. Another option is the concrete look that uses large-format tiles to further the seamless theme. While smart technologies are seemingly ubiquitous throughout the home, when it comes to the bathroom mirror customizable light on-demand steals the spotlight. LED mirrors that

offer a menu of light colors, combinations and features can be brightened and dimmed with a single tap via a smartphone. As holds true with about any home improvement project, it pays to do your homework before jumping into a bathroom remodel, Davis cautions. “When you first think you are going to remodel your bathroom you don’t think it is a big deal until someone like me starts asking you thousands of questions,” Davis says. “It is a lot of decisions, so I would say be ready to have patience.” And, don’t be hesitant to recruit help from a professional, Davis says. “It does help to have someone that is a professional and knows all the details,” Davis cautions. “There are a lot more details in a bathroom than anyone thinks there are until you get into it.”

Budget friendly ideas to freshen up your space

Whether you’re fatigued by seeing the same decor every day or simply looking for an opportunity to refresh indoor spaces with an appealing mini makeover, rethinking your favorite room in the house doesn’t need to be an expensive ordeal. Even if your budget is tight, you can still make small changes to transform a room. Consider these ideas:

By Family Features | PHOTO BY upsplash

Bring stylish flair to your space with a new color scheme. Rather than replacing all the furniture, which can be costly, focus on smaller accessory pieces such as pillows and decorative items. Create variety by using multiple hues of the same color or mixing two or more complementary colors. Introduce new accent furniture. Smaller and less cost-prohibitive than centerpieces like a couch, for example, accent pieces such as end tables or a coffee table can provide subtle changes to the look of a room. You could also opt to refinish a piece of furniture you have on hand to create a look that’s all your own. Morph your room by simply rearranging what you already own. Adjusting the orientation of your furniture and decor can let you see your favorite room from a whole new perspective. Whether it’s a flea market find, such as an old window frame that you paint and add a display shelf to the base, or a series of photos from your favorite vacation destination, adding some DIY art can not only update your room, but make it more personal, too. A new look for your favorite room can go a long way, so find ways to update your space for a comfy retreat you can enjoy. Find more ideas at eLivingtoday.com. DAILY JOURNAL

If you haven’t done so already, it might be time to swap out the seasonal wardrobe. Why not reorganize the closet in the meantime?

16 HOME TRENDS MAGAZINE

By cathy hobbs, tribune media services | PHOTOs BY tns

WHERE TO BEGIN Before purchasing, plan. Planning is the first place one should begin when it comes to organization. The philosophy of “everything should have a place and be in place” is a good rule to be your guide.

DESIGN RECIPES SHORTCUT Purge. Take inventory. Decide. Before getting started on your closet organization journey, toss what you don’t need. If you haven’t worn something in over a year, it’s time for it to hit the donation or trash pile. Then, take inventory of what you want to keep, retaining those items that are your musthaves. Finish by deciding where you want categories of items to go. The items you use or wear often should be front and center and easily accessible.

WHAT TO BUY Depending on your budget, there are a host of options to create organization and order. Modest budget If you are on a modest budget, consider just adding shelving and bars for clothing, as cabinets and drawers are more intricate and costly. Medium budget Many retail stores offer various ready-made, off-the-shelf organization and cabinet options. If possible, meet with an in-house professional so that you can take advantage of their design and measuring services.

READY TO SPLURGE? If budget isn’t an overwhelming concern, built-ins are the way to go. Built-ins allow you to truly go custom. The process often involves a custom millworker or cabinetmaker creating “shop” drawings and then building cabinetry to order. Regardless of your budget, aim to create a closet organization plan that will serve your needs for various seasons and as you grow and build your wardrobe. DAILY JOURNAL

Set up the ultimate children’s workstation By statepoint

Want to help guarantee your child’s academic success? While you can’t control what goes on in the classroom, you can facilitate their study time at home by setting up an A+ workstation. Here’s how: 1. Choose a location: Select a location that’s well-lit, preferably with some natural light, and away from noise and distractions. Whether it’s your child’s bedroom or a corner of the dining area, the area should be large enough for all their supplies and tech to stay organized. 2. Use color wisely: Research has shown that certain colors have the power to boost productivity and creativity or promote a sense of calm. Decorating the space with care could potentially help your student weather crunch periods with ease. You may also opt to color code binders, dividers and other supplies by coursework so that your child can quickly identify the items they need. 3. Update technology: Equip the workstation with the latest technology and educational tools. For easy essay composition, your child’s suite of devices should include a tablet or laptop and a printer. To get your student prepped for math and science classes, be sure to supply them with a graphing calculator featur-

ing the latest capabilities. The fx9750GIII, for example, is not only stylishly available in trending colors, it’s capable of programming in CASIO Basic and MicroPython. With graph and statistical functions, exam compatibility mode and a suite educational resources, your student will be well prepared to take on all their STEM coursework and test prep. 4. Prevent clutter: Clutter can pile up all too easily, making it difficult to find notes and assignments. Keep the mess to a minimum with the addition of a few organizational tools. Hang a corkboard to post reminders and to-do lists. Add wall shelving or a sorting tray to keep papers filed by subject area or due date, and use small baskets or cups to collect erasers, paper clips and other small supplies. Finally, be sure the workstation has its own waste bin, so that items that are no longer needed can be efficiently tossed or recycled. 5. Consider ergonomics: Eliminate distractions by making sure the workstation is ergonomic-friendly and comfy. If your child sits at a desk, ensure their computer monitor is at eye level and that their feet touch the floor. Adjustable laptop tables can transform a makeshift work area on the couch or bed into a comfortable workstation.
