The Daily Journal’s first Fire Prevention and Safety Guide was published in 1993. In 2014, the Daily Journal brought the section back as an annual publication to honor those who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting our community during disasters. They are there for us during fires at our homes and businesses, and spend their time promoting public safety and fire prevention.

It was truly amazing to see how many people featured in 1993 are still dedicating their life to serving and protecting us. In this issue, you will see every fire station in Johnson County featured, along with staff photos recognizing them for all they do. We hope it will remind everyone of the importance of fire prevention in each and every home and business.

October is Fire Safety Month, so please take some time to review your fire evacuation plan with your family or business, and make sure you have working smoke detectors.

center for emergency resPonse

cert stands for center for emergency response training. every year, fires and other emergencies take thousands of lives and destroy property worth billions of dollars. Firefighters and emergency service workers help protect the public against these dangers by rapidly responding to a variety of emergencies. They are frequently the first emergency personnel at the scene of a traffic accident or medical emergency and may be called upon to put

out a fire, treat injuries or perform other vital functions. C9 offers the training courses for this certification. The Fire and rescue curriculum may include five Indiana state fire certifications: (1) Mandatory, (2) Firefighter I, (3) Firefighter II, (4) hazardous Materials awareness, (5) hazardous Materials Operations. an additional two industry certifications may be earned by adding (6) First responder, and (7) emergency Medical Technician-basic to the curriculum.

If you’ve ever been interested in becoming a firefighter, now is the time to join the fire service. Firefighters are in high demand with a lot of job openings. Due to understaffing in the fire service, the hiring process that usually takes 6 months to complete is now done fairly quickly. anyone looking to apply for career opportunities must complete a Cpat test. (Candidate physical agility test) at a designated location. The card will be good for 1 year from date of completion. all departments have this as a requirement to apply. emergency Medical Technician is also a requirement, some departments (IFD) will do their own FF1/2 course as a conditional offer of employment while most departments will accept the IDhS Fire academy FF 1/2 program. after meeting all the application requirements then at that time candidates will go through both medical and physiological exams for the departments to make a final offer of employment.

fire safety tiP: Fire escape plans

a working smoke detector is the most important part of a fire escape plan. never ignore a fire alarm.

Most residential fires occur between midnight and six a.m.

In the event of a fire, you have less than two minutes to escape safely.

Prepare for an emergency by designing an escape plan with the entire family. Know two unobstructed ways out of each room. Feel all doors for evidence of heat before opening them. Close doors behind you to hinder the spread of fire. Close room doors before opening windows.

If your plan involves an upstairs window, plan a safe way to get to the ground decide on a meeting place. Pick a place that is safely away from the home but not across a busy street. The entire household should agree on a spot (mailbox, tree, neighbors house) and know to meet there in the event of an emergency.

Practice your escape plan with the entire household at least twice a year.

remember to crawl low under smoke.

Stop, Drop, and roll - if your clothing catches on fire.
