In an exclusive interview with Industry Update, Senator Carr said the federal government, with its drastic Budget cuts, has abandoned a 10-year agenda to foster innovation.

Senator Carr said the “biggest furphy of all� is the announcement of a $155 million “growth� fund to compensate for the demise of the local automotive industry. “Calculations for the fund were based on the estimated consequences of the carmakers leaving Victoria and South Australia but ignored the impact on components manufacturers in other states, he said. “And when the funding profiles are projected to 2020-21, $155 million pales beside nearly $1 billion in cuts from auto industry programs.�

Senator Carr said cuts to these programs “did not have to happen.� “Instead of dismissing the car makers as a cabal of rent seekers, an astute government might have followed the example of the UK,�

Since the 1980s in the UK the automotive industry has moved away from high-volume car production towards niche products, especially in engine production. “Japanese manufacturers were encouraged to enter the market – not always with subsidies – and a once-languishing industry has been saved and transformed. “With a similar strategy Australia’s auto industry could also rise, phoenix-like from the ashes. But that is a vision the government refuses to see.�

However, Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane has strongly defended the Government’s new budget measures, saying that industry policy is at the heart of the Government’s economic strategy. “The Australian Government is setting a new direction for industry policy focussed on new jobs, new investments and making Australian industry more competitive,� Mr

Macfarlane said.

Mr Macfarlane said the budget focused on creating the right conditions for investment and jobs growth. “Industry policy will no longer be an overlapping plethora of small grants and entitlements, he said. “This new approach is setting the right economic environment by reducing red tape, equipping businesses with key market information and the opportunity to expand or export, and reigniting the Australian spirit of entrepreneurship.�

Mr Macfarlane said the Government is consulting closely with industry on the implementation of the Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program. “This consultation will ensure the program is targeted to industry’s needs. “The feedback from industry has been positive and there has been an understanding of the need to make hard decisions in the Budget to deal with the previous

ALCOHOL KILLS ONE PERSON EVERY 10 SEC Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, according to the World Health Organisation.

This is more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined – and the WHO warns that booze consumption is on the rise.

Including drink driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse, and a multitude of diseases and disorders, alcohol causes one in 20 deaths globally every year, the UN health agency said. This translates into one death every 10 seconds.

The research follows a previous study

by Monash University in Melbourne which found that about half of male manufacturing workers (49 percent) drink alcohol at risky levels and more than one in four smoke (27 percent).

The WorkHealth study involving 500,000 workers found that male manufacturing workers are the most likely of all Victorian workers to have a high risk of type 2 diabetes – due mainly to excessive alcohol consumption and

smoking.

This is a real worry considering 75% of workers in the manufacturing industry are male.

WorkHealth Ambassador, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, said resistance among males to head to the doctor and be proactive about their health was a factor in these results.

“WorkSafe research shows that time, cost and a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude are the major stumbling blocks when it comes to getting a health check, with males far less likely to have a preventative health check than women,” Mr Kayler-Thomson said.

Drinking is linked to more than 200 health conditions, including liver cirrhosis and some cancers. And alcohol abuse also makes people more susceptible to infectious diseases like tuberculosis, HIV and pneumonia.

The WHO study is a wake-up call for the entire manufacturing industry.

Alarm bells have been ringing for far too long – it’s now time for action.

The Federal Budget has delivered a mixed bag for Australian manufacturers.

While there have been cuts to nearly all of the Labor Government’s major innovation programs, new initiatives have been announced in a bid to revive key industry sectors.

The planned axing of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and severe cutbacks to the CSIRO has understandably caused much angst in science and technology circles. Likewise, the dismantling of assistance programs such as Enterprise Connect, Commercialisation Australia and the Innovation Investment Fund has created shockwaves in many industry circles.

As a compromise, the government has announced cuts in company tax rates – music to the ears of many struggling SMEs. One shining light in a tough Budget has been the establishment of a Trade Support Loans Program to encourage more young people to complete their apprenticeships.

Under the new program apprentices will receive a loan of up to $20,000 over a four-year apprenticeship.

The new scheme will be targeted at occupations on the National Skills Needs List, including plumbers, diesel mechanics, electricians and fitters.

It replaces the Tools for your Trade program that gave cash to apprentices to buy equipment needed for their work.

The government has also announced the establishment of an Industry Skills Fund, providing $476 million over the next four years.

This comes at a price. The government has announced it will axe the longstanding Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) program. This a real concern.

Kate Carnell, the newly appointed CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Australia's largest and most representative business organisation, says the “free-fall” in apprenticeship numbers is deeply alarming.

Industry and government must work together to restore incentives and reduce the cost for employers to take on apprentices, she says.

We couldn’t agree more.

HOW THE FEDERAL BUDGET WILL BENEFIT INDUSTRY Ian Macfarlane MP, Minister for Industry The 2014 Budget has set the future direction for the way that Government and industry work together to support Australian business and the Australian economy. It is part of the Government’s Economic Action Strategy.

The role of Government is to provide the framework that will give Australian manufacturers, businesses and innovators the environment to grow, create new opportunities and supply new markets.

The Budget gives small and medium sized businesses the resources they need to successfully diversify and improve competiveness in a global market.

We are simplifying and streamlining the programs we deliver and the way we deliver them.

These programs are now easier to understand and easier to access, through the new Single Business Service that will be run by my department. This means that businesses can get the information they need online, via phone or email and through a face-to-face business network.

The service will provide access to new Budget programs, like the $476 million Industry Skills Fund, that leads the move to training and support services that are focused on the needs of employers.

This program will deliver around 200,000 targeted training places and support services, over four years, which are designed to fill skills gaps quickly from January 2015.

This will ensure that workers have the qualifications and skills, including support

for language, literacy and numeracy, to make Australian industry more flexible and successful.

We have tackled the high apprenticeship drop-out rate and the impact this has on the supply of skilled labour.

At the moment apprenticeship completion rates sits at around 50 percent.

That’s why we are introducing Trade Support Loans.

These loans will target apprentices in occupations in the greatest demand, including plumbers, diesel mechanics, electricians and fitters.

Apprentices in these fields will receive loans of up to $20,000, to help with the costs of learning and completing apprenticeships.

As an additional incentive, apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeship will have the amount of their loan reduced by 20 percent.

In addition, the Government has committed $5 million to continuing targeted mentoring support to help apprentices stay in training.

We are also supporting businesses to support themselves with the new $484 million Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program from July 1.

This program will drive business competitiveness and promote economic growth through supporting business improvement and the commercialisation of new ideas.

It will equip small to medium enterprises with the management and business skills to

lead change and expansion.

Businesses will have access to market and industry information and business management advice from experienced private sector providers with links to supply chains.

It will also bring research and business together to develop and commercialise home-grown ideas, with the support of specialist expertise in intellectual property and private capital.

The Government is also committed to businesses transitioning from traditional manufacturing to higher value and growth markets, with a new $50 million Manufacturing Transition Grants Program.

Grants of up to $10 million will be awarded to manufacturers moving to knowledgeintensive or niche manufacturing sectors, where they can gain a competitive advantage.

The Prime Minister’s Industry Investment and Competitiveness Agenda will focus on our strengths, create jobs and exploit our competitive advantages.

When the Agenda is released later this year it will include initiatives to promote national competitiveness and productivity by reducing the costs of doing business, encouraging innovation, boosting investment and business growth.

By building on the success of our industries this Budget gives a framework to encourage the next wave of entrepreneurship and investment in the industries of the future.

STRONG RESULTS FROM NMW 2014

This year’s National Manufacturing Week (NMW) in Sydney in May delivered solid outcomes for participants.

More than 300 exhibiting companies made new links within Australia's fast-changing manufacturing industry following another successful show.

Preliminary figures reveal that about 6,300 trade visitors attended NMW 2014, taking advantage of a host of new features to build very strong links with industry suppliers.

A notable feature of NMW's visitor base was the high quality of visitors.

More than 40 percent of visitors were executives with purchasing power – representing an increased ratio of decisionmakers in the visitor mix.

This included engineers and Directors/ CEOs/GMs/Owners and equivalent from Government, Defence, the resources sector and other large-budget organisations through to innovative smaller businesses seeking out high-value new technologies.

Also notable was the success of new programs designed to spark closer interaction between exhibitors and visitors.

The popular NMW Solutions Theatres provided a rolling program of discussions on strategies for boosting innovation,

productivity and speed to market.

The presentations – from 35 experts across four different hubs on the exhibition floor – offered new ideas and interaction with exhibitors.

NMW also saw the introduction of Oneto-One Meetings, which gave exhibitors and potential buyers the opportunity to be paired for focused discussions. Some 60 meetings were held, resulting in solid leads for exhibitors including Russell Brinkworth from Leussink Engineering.

"I had opportunities for several meetings - and one, in particular, was just outstanding.

I was able to meet with the GM of Production of a company that has 12 welding bays, and who commented that our gear solved all his problems with fixture changes.

He's someone who might not have stumbled across Leussink without the meetings service - and for our company, he's a great new lead," said Brinkworth.

3D PRINTING BOOM SHOWS NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN With significant advancements in technology in recent years, 3D printing is set to soon overhaul traditional methods of product development and manufacturing.

Research released earlier this year found that additive manufacturing/3D printing has grown by an average of 32.3 percent each year for the past three years.

Wohlers Associates, a research consultancy focused on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, has been tracking the industry for more than 25 years.

Its latest research shows the market for 3D printing, consisting of all products and services worldwide, grew to $3.07 billion last year.

Compared with an averaged 27 percent growth rate over the past 26 years, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.9 percent is the highest in 17 years. The CAGR for the past three years (2011–2013) was 32.3 percent.

Wohlers Associates believes the industry will continue strong growth over the next several years, fueled by sales of under $5,000 “personal” 3D printers, as well as the expanded use of the technology for the production of parts, especially metal, that go into final products.

One person who is not surprised with the meteoric global growth of 3D printing is Ido Eylon, Stratasys’ South Asia General Manager.

The word is spreading fast throughout the world about the benefits of 3D printing.

“Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing market in the world for us,” Eylon told Industry Update during a recent visit to Sydney. “We are committed to the Australia and New Zealand markets – we see a lot of potential here.”

Based in Singapore, Eylon was in Sydney to inspect Stratasys’ impressive display at the National Manufacturing Week exhibition in May. Stratasys sponsored the event’s inaugural

Additive Manufacturing product zone – a star attraction for NMW visitors.

Eylon says shows such as NMW play a key role in educating the market (mainly manufacturers) to the benefits of 3D printing technology.

“As industry leaders we (Stratasys) play an important role in educating the market … and people are starting to understand the benefits, he says.

“Education is a big part of our marketing strategy – it is key.”

Has Australia been slow to embrace 3D printing technology?

“It’s all about making people more aware of the technology … sometimes it requires stepping out of your comfort zone,” Eylon says.

Eylon believes 3D printing offers many advantages over traditional manufacturing.

Though 3D printing will not replace traditional manufacturing “anytime soon”, it is revolutionizing the way people make things.

Eylon says 3D printing is now being used by industry sectors across the board.

This includes defence, aerospace, medical, automotive, consumer goods and electronics.

Growth areas include the education and medical applications including body parts and dental.

As well as exhibitions like NMW, Stratasys’ education also involves institutions such as universities.

“It is our job to educate the market and make sure the right message is out there,”

he says.

“NMW is part of the education process.

It’s a big show.

This year was the first time Stratasys has had a major presence at an Australian trade show.

“Many of the people who attend are our potential customers – beneficiaries of the technology we offer, says Eylon.

“We are here to spread the word and make sure everyone is aware of the benefits.”

“We are looking to interact with them to explain and educate about this new revolution.”

Stratasys will also be one of the major exhibitors at the new Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo, to be held in Melbourne on July 9-10.

Run by Mediabistro (formerly WebMediaBrands), the expo debuted in New York’s Javits Centre in April last year, with follow-up shows at San Jose and Chicago before being held in Singapore for the first time last October.

“We are looking forward to that show to further spread the message,” says Eylon.

“It’s hard to predict the future, says Eylon. “But what I can say is that 3D printing is becoming more accessible and more affordable for the masses.”

MELBOURNE MANUFACTURING GETS A BOOST More than 65 new manufacturing jobs will be created in Melbourne’s north by the first project to be funded under a new investment and innovation program targeting the region.

In April, Minister for Industry Ian Macfarlane and Victorian Minister for Manufacturing David Hodgett announced the first grant of $1 million under the joint Commonwealth/State Melbourne North Innovation and Investment Fund (MNIIF).

Epping business New Age Caravans will receive the grant to undertake a $3.7 million project to establish an advanced robotic manufacturing centre.

The new centre is aimed at improving the productivity and quality of its caravan and mining accommodation unit manufacturing activities to meet rising demand.

It is the first of many projects to be funded under MNIIF, a tripartite agreement between the Commonwealth Government, the Victorian Government and Ford Australia.

“This project is a great example of an innovative company in a growing market that is driving real improvements in productivity for the business, said Mr Macfarlane.

And the jobs that will be created by the new project would be suitable for ex-Ford and automotive supply chain workers, with only minimal retraining required.

to take advantage of new markets and new jobs. Using the existing skills base and knowledge of local workers is a priority in this process as we move into a new era for Australian industry,” Mr Macfarlane said.

Mr Hodgett said that this was the first of a number of projects that would help grow manufacturing jobs in the region.

The Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund (GRIIF) and the Melbourne’s North Innovation and Investment Fund (MNIIF) are competitive, merit-based grant programs. The funds are based on a tripartite agreement between the Commonwealth Government, the Victorian Government and Ford Australia.

The federal government will contribute $30 million, the Victorian Government $9 million and Ford Australia $10 million.

Of the total $49 million in funding, $24.5 million will be made available to the GRIIF and $24.5 million will be made available to the MNIIF. The funds were set up to help Ford manufacturing employees who will lose their jobs following the closure of the local manufacturing facility in 2016.

Ford contributed $10 million to the fund and plans to further help employees identify new opportunities at a jobs fair at its Broadmeadows facility in April.

In a climate of increasingly demanding customer expectations, how does an engineering business provide outstanding quality without hurting profit and growth?

With expectations high, businesses must focus not just on what they do but how they achieve their outcomes.

Delivering an impressive customer result is often linked to the quality of a company’s internal operations. While most businesses understand this synergy, many fall short of having a strong quality management system (QMS) in place.

It’s surprising that most organisations continue to operate without implementing an effective quality management system, especially when failing to do so can be detrimental to both reputation and profit.

The consequences may include ongoing operational delays, budget overruns, and a waste of precious resources. As a result, both a business’s reputation and profit may be at serious risk.

Additionally, some employees responsible for quality management morph into the role without any official training or education. In some companies quality management can land on the lap of an employee who hasn’t undergone any training whatsoever.

While this may have been a natural step within the business structure, it may be detrimental to overall performance.

An efficient quality management system, managed by a qualified staff

member, improves performance and internal efficiency, identifies inconsistencies and problems and recognises ways to resolve. As a result, staff morale and productivity is increased and consumers are given confidence in the business.

Without these fundamental guidelines, employees will not understand the rules and they will develop their own which may not align with the expectations of the organisation or the customer. You must also ensure that employees have the knowledge and skills to perform their work with confidence.

Deliver on your promises Make sure all operational aspects of the organisation are working cohesively to deliver the promise of quality, ensuring not to forget those aspects that are outsourced to external third-party providers. Do they understand what your promise of quality is, and their role in

keeping this promise?

5.

Evaluate and seek improvement Objectives and targets are of little value, unless they are used as the baseline to gauge success. Monitor and measure performance results to determine whether the promise of quality was achieved. And if not, determine why not. Using these results, seek to understand what needs to change in your business roadmap and operations.

6.

Apply the wisdom Up to now you’ve assessed the possible roadblocks to quality. Now you must remove them through controlled changes in your operations. If you have a sufficient quality plan in place you will be able to assess which process is most appropriate to the issue and apply the solution in a timely manner to achieve results.

WAKE UP CALL: ARE SMARTPHONE WORKERS BEING EXPLOITED?

An investigation into the electronics industry has revealed 97 percent of companies fail to pay factory workers producing electronic devices enough to cover their basic needs.

The findings, unveiled recently by Fairfax Media, have renewed concerns about workers in developing countries being exploited in the production of mobile phones, tablets and televisions.

The Electronics Industry Trends report, released by Baptist World Aid, examined 39 companies’ efforts to stamp out oppressive conditions in their supply chains.

Researchers relied on publicly available information and feedback from the companies, of which about half took part, to rank them on policies, transparency and worker rights.

The report’s co-author Gershon Nimbalker said minimum wages in manufacturing countries such as China, India and South Korea often failed to cover basic living costs, which was "critical in empowering individuals and communities to overcome poverty."

The report also found that 18 per cent of tech companies had only partial knowledge of where their raw materials were sourced, which Mr Nimbalker said increased the likelihood of slavery and child labour.

Mr Nimbalker said most of the 21 million victims of forced labour worldwide worked for companies supplying goods to countries such as Australia.

He said modelling showed that increasing workers’ wages to meet their basic needs would add $2 to $9 to the retail cost of a smartphone.

So the big question is: Would you pay $9 more for your smartphone if it guaranteed better working conditions for the person who made it?

Staff at Industry Update all say they would pay a little more for a mobile smartphone if it helped to prevent the exploitation of workers in developing countries.

Our production and design manager Angela Hankinson said she would happily pay an extra $9 or even more.

“If we can afford the luxury of buying a

smart phone we can definitely afford to pay a little bit extra, Angela said. “We would easily spend $9 on a coffee and a treat, lunch, drinks after work and so many more unnecessary things so it's without question that paying an extra $9 can easily be done.”

“This could make a big difference to someone who is working below a minimum wage. It may be the difference between eating or not.”

Finance and Accounts manager Michelle Alcock agrees.

“I would definitely pay an extra $9 for a smart phone if I knew the workers would benefit from it.

“I guess some people would be interested to know where the phones are made and where the materials come from, but if I was buying a phone I probably wouldn't give it much thought.”

Our advertising sales manager Sean Fletcher had the last word: “I would happily pay $9 more over the lifespan of the phone if the information was available when purchasing the phone.

“People nowadays just want the best price or best deal on a phone, but they don't necessarily do any research or ask any questions as to how or where the product materials are sourced.”

The demise of Ford, Holden and Toyota did not come as a great surprise to Professor Borland. Nor did Alcoa’s plant closing and crises at Cadbury and SPC. Australia simply can’t compete with low wage economies when it comes to labour intensive manufacturing like car making or textiles, clothing and footwear (TFC).

“But we are clearly still competitive in some high end manufacturing areas, such as food processing,” says Professor Borland.

“Manufacturing in Australia has always been at a bit of a disadvantage,” he explains.

A relatively small domestic market, as well as our distance to the biggest world markets places us at a disadvantage.

“Manufacturing in the 20th century has been about large-scale production to gain economies of scale, says Professor Borland. “With our small population and distance from the richer world markets we have never had access to the size of market that is needed to underpin large-scale

production.”

However, Australia has been fortunate to compensate manufacturing “losses” with a robust mining sector and other high productivity industries.

In the 1980s many industries were protected by Government subsidies and tariffs.

“Once Government withdrew significant amounts of protection it became inevitable those sectors would fall because of the strength of international forces, Professor Borland says.

Because of high labour costs, Australia has been forced to change its focus on industry that is not labour intensive.

The fact that a change in focus has resulted in job losses is regrettable, Professor Borland says.

But Australia is not alone when it comes to a decline in the manufacturing sector. Other “high wage” economies like the US and UK have been in the same boat.

But US manufacturing has been boosted by the strong emergence of its IT industry, which has helped to compensate for job losses suffered in the past three decades.

In his research, Professor Borland found the composition of manufacturing employment has undergone significant change in the past three decades.

GOOD OIL: GREAT FOR MACHINERY, BUT NOT FOR HANDS We’ve all heard it before: ”a bit of grease never hurt anyone.”

Unfortunately, this is not true, because commonly used grease and lubricants are capable of causing health complications that range from contact dermatitis up to those more serious, including a variety of cancers.

Engineering oil and the oily liquids used in machine maintenance aren’t harmless.

They are chemicals, and the chemical reaction they cause can harm workers the same as any other chemical.

Oil is a combination of many substances, including powerful neurotoxins, which can cause a range of symptoms including nausea, headache, euphoria and dizziness.

These symptoms are signs that the nervous system of those exposed to oil is being damaged.

“An added risk of oil exposure can be a lack of grip when trying to adjust greasy machinery where injuries can be sustained when hands slip. When workers are focused on getting the job done, it can be tempting to see gloves as an impediment to completing the task”, said Ansell marketing manager, David Nicholls.

“Even on sites where it’s mandatory

for gloves to be worn, many workers take them off, thinking that this will improve their dexterity and speed.

However, in doing so, they are unaware that oil, dust and small, sharp pieces of debris can be a nasty combination added to the surfaces that comes into contact with exposed skin. Getting a firm hold on a slippery surface can be quite a challenge but when other materials are added that can dig into hands and make one’s grip less sure, it can protract the time taken to complete a job.

INTEGRATED DRIVE SYSTEMS A ‘SNACK’ FOR SEW-EURODRIVE The choice between fully integrated systems or a mix and match approach can be a difficult one for engineers seeking to optimise drives and control systems.

By selecting from different suppliers, they can match each component in the system to their overall design.

Alternatively, integration offers simplicity, guaranteed compatibility and the advantages of dealing with a single supplier.

In a recently installed snack food conveyor system, an integrated system of MOVIFIT drives was implemented without compromising the design objectives.

A quick check of the local supermarket shelves gives a clue as to the complexity of the snack food manufacturing process. The variety on display is enormous. Everything from high-energy breakfast alternatives and morning pick-me-ups to chips and party foods is readily available.

Imagine then, the logistical exercise of continuously moving all these different snack foods through a clean manufacturing plant, where hygiene, energy efficiency and reliability are the priorities.

To achieve the tight production schedules, all these items must be boxed in their various manufacturing zones and moved along sophisticated conveyor lines to the appropriate packing and despatch areas. Design of the conveyor systems and

The layout of the snack food plant called for a complex system of conveyor lines

the motors and drives that power them is of critical importance in this environment.

According to Jason Thompson, Director of Contech Engineering, there was no need for compromise when designing the drive system for a recently installed snack food conveyor system in Sydney.

By choosing integrated and flexible motors and drives from a single supplier that was able to meet the technical requirements for the entire system, his design team had the best of both worlds.

While the mix and match approach had worked well in the past, the opportunity to source suitable drives and electronics from a single supplier, SEW-EURODRIVE, produced the optimal result at the snack food manufacturing plant.

The layout of the snack food plant called for a complex set of conveyor lines, feeding into the despatch area like a multitude of tributaries flowing into a major river.

From the manufacturing line, each snack food carton is placed on a conveyor that joins other lines before moving at a steady rate to an upper level in the manufacturing plant. To achieve this, and to keep the snack food production targets on track, the design incorporated a number of high grip and inclining conveyors. At the upper level, these lines feed into a single conveyor that carries the cartons to the

distribution area.

Thompson had a clear goal in mind when planning the project.

“We were looking for a reliable and integrated system of drives to keep the conveyor belts moving,” he says. “We wanted simple drive operation and decentralised installation, to save on space and cabling costs.”

To accomplish this goal, Thompson deployed 34 SEW-EURODRIVE MOVIFIT FC, 0.75 kW variable speed drives.

“The decentralised control units of the drive systems required less cable and fewer cabinets in the field, and that was where we made most of the space savings,” he says. “This reduced the design complexity and overall costs, while allowing for easy diagnostics and maintenance. The simplified design also reduced possible sources of errors in the wiring-up stage.”

The decision to close couple the gear motors to SEW-EURODRIVE decentralised motor controllers was a significant step, says John Gattellari, National Industry Specialist Food & Beverage, with SEW-EURODRIVE. Gattellari says that the MOVIFIT solution allows for flexible topology, which simplified the design process for the snack food conveyor system. This was aided by built-in local intelligence and local control functions.

Isolators are also local, providing an important safety feature. Additional protection devices were not required for the snack food application. This is typical of such projects and applies to wet areas as well.

Energy efficiency was another important consideration in the design of the snack food conveyor system. “The energy efficiency of the drives reduces costs, while also complying with new energy efficiency laws,” says Thompson.

Despite the complexity of the conveyor system, Thompson says that because of the system design and the equipment chosen, disassembly and reassembly on site were easily implemented.

The integrated design approach, with all drives sourced from a single supplier, allowed Thompson’s team to reduce the complexity of the conveyor system by minimising the number of different components.

At all phases of the project – planning, design and implementation – this approach proved to be cost effective and fulfilled all technical requirements. For the snack food conveyor system, integration of the drives was achieved without compromising the design objectives.

SIPPEL AIRSKATE FOR SAFETY AND SIMPLICITY This simple Four AS22-HP Airskate System (pictured) from the Sippel Group can be set up to move equipment weighing up to 16-tonnes.

It floats a load suspended by controlled air passing into and then out from under the diaphragms.

This allows almost frictionless movement from A to B in a relatively short time.

The tiny air gap between diaphragm and floor emits a controlled airflow, which is not fast enough to blow out a lighted match held close by.

attachment tapped holes.

The Yellow Hose Coil (20m or more) connects to the Pipe (silver) Manifold then to the Air Supply. The Manifold connects via green coiled tubing (4) to the Airskate Modules (4).

The Manifold Inbuilt Control Valve is controlled by the Handheld Deadman (yellow tubing connections).

The diaphragms when signalled from the Manual Deadman Control gently lift the load. Then it is just a matter of a slight push or pull and observation over or around the load for careful easy movement to the desired location, on a suitable horizontal surface. Ramps can also be negotiated.

The Deadman is there to stop the load in an emergency or it completes the job by gently depositing the load where required.

To set up each Airskate Module is usually just matter of placing or sliding each skate under the load in an appropriate position.

You then simply hook up the airlines to the designed Manifold Deadman Combo – and hey presto – most loads are ready to move.

Adequate vision around the load and along the selected path ensures optimum safety.

A supporting floor such as a steel trowelled factory floor is all that is needed

with sometimes a slip sheet of thin steel or lino if floor surface is below par.

Timber and grid floors have also been negotiated with the Airskate Hovair.

GAME CHANGER: WILL DRONES TECHNOLOGY BE THE NEXT BIG THING IN MATERIALS HANDLING? Plant and warehouse managers may have to add “Air Traffic Controller” to their list of job duties in the near future.

That’s because companies like Qimarox of the Netherlands continue to work up new ways to use drones in the material handling field.

Qimarox, a leading manufacturer of components for material handling systems, has launched a study into the possibilities of using drones for product palletising.

Manufacturers of consumer products can use these flying robots to design a very compact, flexible and scalable palletising process.

Qimarox is continuing along the path embarked upon by mega online store Amazon.com and others.

Amazon.com and parcel carriers UPS and DHL in the US have announced they would like to start using drones to distribute parcels to consumers.

The drones could slash delivery costs for consumers who order goods online.

There are already several videos on YouTube showing the first test flights of drones collecting packages in a distribution centre and flying them out towards residential areas.

Qimarox specialises in the manufacture of, among other things, palletisers and vertical conveyors.

It is constantly on the lookout for innovative concepts.

The company believes drones may soon offer a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional palletizing methods.

With little superstructure or extensive hardware to install, a drone-based palletizing solution could be deployed rapidly, and should be capable of a relatively high sustained load throughput.

Although the current limitation on their usefulness is clearly the weight of the carried load, this is not seen as insurmountable in the medium term.

And interest from companies like Amazon will continue to drive battery and control development.

While, farmers in the US are already starting to use drones to do things like survey their fields, drones and quad copters are still trying to find their niche in industry.

After using drones for external logistics processes, the next step is to use them for internal logistics processes.

According to Qimarox Operational Manager Jaco Hooijer: “Because of the limitations in terms of capacity and ergonomics, using people to stack goods on pallets is no longer an option for most manufacturers of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods.

“Using drones, they can fully automate the palletising process, while retaining the much greater level of flexibility and scalability entailed by using real people.”

The great thing about palletising with drones is that the process can be redesigned at any time without having to move or adjust any of your machines.

All that is needed is to change the coordinates in the software that controls the drones. Another advantage is that capacity can easily be increased or decreased by simply switching more drones on or off.

It is even possible to use a single drone to operate multiple end-of-line packaging lines.

The biggest limitation is currently the weight that a drone can carry. Currently, drones are being tested that can lift products of up to 2.3kg.

However, the technology is developing so rapidly that weights of up to 10kg should be possible within the foreseeable future.

Qimarox doesn’t expect palletising systems using drones to be the ideal solution for every manufacturer of consumer products.

KONECRANES GIVES B&D DOORS A BOOST Konecranes, a world leader in cranes and lifting, has delivered a complete materials handling package to B&D Doors and Openers’ manufacturing facility in Sydney.

The Konecranes team replaced 11 single girder cranes with more efficient, low maintenance and high safety types.

Initially, Konecranes carried out Crane Reliability Survey (CRS) reports on the old cranes, which ranged from 2T to 6T. They then determined with B&D it would be more viable to supply 11 new cranes than to pay for maintenance and upkeep of the ageing cranes.

“Of course price was a major factor in the decision to upgrade, says B&D Maintenance Supervisor, Brian Allen.

“Konecranes gave us great value for money – but it was the professionalism, expertise and efficiency of the Konecranes staff that made us feel confident we’d made the right decision.”

Established in Australia for over 50 years, B&D manufactures high quality commercial and residential garage doors at their facility at Revesby in Western Sydney.

The company prides itself on engineering ingenuity and innovation and

invented the original roller door. B&D also place a high emphasis on efficiency, safety and standards compliance, for which Konecranes performed additional upgrades.

These included modifying one existing crane from 2 to 3.2t to meet B&D’s requirements and upgrading four power supply systems to the Koneductor down shop power supply system, as the previous ones did not comply with the latest standards.

Koneductor is Konecranes’ conductor bar system for crane power supply. It is a method of conducting electricity from the power grid to the crane. The absence of plug connectors provides an extremely smooth connection that minimises brush wear on the connector trolley. The system’s structure is very sustainable and safe, avoiding problems associated with added resistance at joints and increased voltage drop characteristics when joints loosen or corrode.

“Konecranes was really good when it came to compliance, said Mr Allen.

“They recommended inspections, surveys and upgrades without being too pushy about it. Since Konecranes was given the

service contract for the upkeep of our cranes about 12 months ago, we haven’t had any problems and I can be confident that everything meets the rigorous safety standards of the industry.”

The Konecranes Group – which has more than 420,000 cranes of all makes under service contract worldwide – utilises RailQ and RopeQ surveys on crane componentry vital to reliability and safety.

The technologies use laser alignment verification of the rails or runways on which overhead cranes must run smoothly and safely, and real time monitoring of the wire ropes vital to the safety and reliability of all lifting equipment.

For B&D, Konecranes recommended a RailQ inspection on five crane runways,

which varied from being hook bolted to welded rail types. After this was carried out, Konecranes followed up with the repairs and modifications required to have the rails comply with the latest standards.

All of the upgrades, and the installation of the 11 new cranes, were undertaken according to an agreed program that provided the minimum downtime and disruption for B&D. The success of the operation has also involved Konecranes obtaining the maintenance agreement for the ongoing service of the cranes.

HOW EUROCRANE CAN GIVE SMEs A LIFT For small to medium sized crane manufacturers, the process of quoting, provisioning and manufacturing cranes can be a difficult ant time consuming process.

And for small to medium sized crane providers, the process of component selection and structural member sizing for new crane proposals has been a hit and miss affair. It takes years of industry exposure, trial and error and costly mistakes to be able to confidently select the ideal customer solution.

In fact, the process can be so time consuming and frustrating that most sales people approach prospects with a degree of gut feel and optimism all the while hoping that the customer doesn’t ask too many technical questions about the proposal.

Buyers are increasingly seeking out suppliers that can give them detailed product specifications and drawings of what’s being offered to them.

A buyer can visualise what they are buying when they receive a drawing at the proposal stage. They are more likely to understand what is being offered to

them when they are presented with a detailed specification and generally more appreciative of the finished product when it’s supplied to them as they expected it to be.

Unfortunately this isn’t an affordable luxury for the small to medium crane manufacturer to have at their disposal.

To be competitive in the marketplace while producing a quality product takes a fair bit of innovation, careful product selection and reliable suppliers. Buying “one size fits all” end carriages and hoists from the typical channels does not give you a point of difference or an advantage over anyone. Making your own components or sub assemblies will help, but in most cases the effort in this outweighs the advantages.

One thing that rings true for both of these scenarios is that your supply chain will be both long and fragile. In fact, no less than 15 different suppliers may be involved in one build! The effect of one delayed delivery could bring the job to a grinding halt.

By law any new machine must be supplied with operator instructions and

maintenance manuals.

Quite often the mechanical equipment that is purchased for the construction of a new crane doesn’t come with manuals, assembly instructions, electrical drawings, spare parts lists or operator instructions that could be considered adequate.

As the supplier of the final product, the responsibility falls on you to supply all of this documentation to the end user.

HONEYWELL AND DEXION ADD SOME SPARKLE TO SCHWEPPES WAREHOUSE inefficiencies caused by an out-dated paper based picking system, Schweppes Australia decided to implement a fully integrated voice-operated system to deliver a comprehensive picking solution.

Schweppes Australia’s National Logistics Execution Manager, Danny Murphy said the main goal was to build a fully integrated system that would eliminate the double handling of pallets and non-value add repetitive tasks.

The company was also keen to provide its managers and supervisors with visibility in the workplace, thus creating a safer workplace for pickers.

Schweppes Australia engaged Dexion to implement a multifunctional paperless solution that would control the physical and operational aspects of Archerfield’s distribution centre.

Dexion partnered with world leader in voice enabled solutions, Vocollect by Honeywell, to deliver a paperless, efficient and accurate picking system.

Iconic brand Schweppes has been delivering premium quality non-alcoholic beverages to Australians for more than 150 years.

Today, Schweppes Australia is a beverage powerhouse, boasting 1800 employees, 11 manufacturing sites and 12 distribution centres across the country. It manufactures some of Australia’s most loved and popular drinks including Schweppes, SOLO, Cottee’s, Spring Valley, Pepsi and Gatorade.

Working closely with its customers, Schweppes Australia distributes and delivers beverage products to over 30,000 customers nationally.

One of its largest distribution centres, the Archerfield site in Queensland services a large majority of the state’s market.

Over 40 employees pick up to 16,000 cases daily, which are then delivered to more than 5,000 customers.

Until recently, the site operated using a paper based picking system. The process of planning each load could take the picker up to 15 minutes.

To combat the inaccuracies and

Sales Manager, Mike Dowd, the Dexion Real-time Distribution System (RDS) was used as the platform to facilitate process improvements and integration with the Schweppes ERP system SAP. “The RDS provides a flexible and cost effective solution to provide coal face functionality and practicality with minimal impact on the Host system,” said Dowd.

A key consideration in rolling out the new solution was to establish how the pallets would be built according to order size. In contrast to the old model, in which all work was completed on paper with numerous SAP transactions, Dexion’s RDS provided a single real-time interface to Schweppes Australia’s existing systems, aggregating multiple features for the varying functions within the distribution centre.

Dexion’s RDS has resolved the issue of product identification, previously a major challenge for the Archerfield warehouse.

Under the paper-based system, pickers had to identify 400 different products in the warehouse – some of which have markedly

similar packaging, such as Pepsi and Pepsi Max. Under the new automated voice solution, a picker is provided with a pallet label. They are then directed to the correct picking location via the new Vocollect SRX2 Wireless Headset. The location is confirmed by the use of a check digit upon arrival – removing any manual direction or confusion about location.

The voice system advises the picker how many cartons they need to pick and the picker repeats the quantity back to the system.

Given the success of Archerfield, Schweppes Australia’s General Manager of Logistics and Customer Service Operations, Ian Gatenby, has plans to roll out the new technology nationally.

Mr Pawson says his company, which supplies products locally and overseas, constantly battles fierce competition from imported products, many of which are inferior to locally manufactured items.

“Companies in Australia only have to show 50 percent local content to qualify as ‘Australian-Made’, but it is at this point that term becomes muddied, he says.

“The term ‘Australian-Made’ has some hidden realities that aren’t properly understood or they are open to exploitation.”

Mr Pawson says the 50 percent component allows some companies to claim items such as tools used in assembly and cardboard packaging and overhead expenses within the framework of the definition.

“So this is where the process is, in a way, being abused.

“But this near-spurious 50 percent component regularly qualifies so-called ‘Australian-Made’ equipment that is then being purchased and used within many sectors of Australian industry without the consumer realising.

“With the overall local component of manufacture effectively disguised, end-users are exposed to potentially inferior products on the belief they are in fact quality locally made product.”

This can lead to unexpected maintenance costs, warranty costs and failure costs as well as “other headaches.”

Mr Pawson says education should be encouraged about the true stipulations of Australian-Made and how it is potentially open to various degrees of exploitation.

“Local industry should buy local product, he says.

“It is our obligation for the future success of local industry, local employment and technological advancement in the global market. Those supporting this ethical approach to succession should have faith that when purchasing Australian Made it truly is Australian Made and the buck stops here.”

The logo is trusted by 88 percent of Australians to identify genuine Aussie products, over and above claims made in writing or use of maps and flags.

Mr Harrison said the specifications for making a countryof-origin claim on a manufactured product in Australia differs by product category.

“But two rules remain constant – it must be substantially transformed in Australia and 50% or more of the cost of production must be incurred in Australia as well, he said.

“While goods may contain some imported components, they must have been manufactured or processed in Australia – not simply packaged or assembled – and a significant proportion of the cost of making the product must be incurred in Australia too.”

As a certification trademark, the Australian Made logo is governed by a Code of Practice, which sets out the guidelines for its use.

Companies must agree to comply with the Code of Practice in order to be issued with a license, and each year the product’s licence must be reviewed and approved.

The Australian Made Campaign also engages in random audits annually, and all complaints are investigated. If necessary, a company using the logo unlawfully will be taken to court.

Fines for misuse of country-of-origin claims can exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A new clean energy system has been developed to deliver cost savings in electricity generation for remote mining and industrial sites and rural communities.

The new system, which is designed to produce electricity and heat for onsite use, is a collaboration between Granite Power Limited, the University of Newcastle (UON), Newcastle Innovation, the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

The new technology was demonstrated at Wallsend Swimming Centre, near Newcastle.

The GRANEX demonstration plant comprises a 200-kW field of parabolic solar collectors plus related power block and thermal storage elements at The City of Newcastle's Wallsend Swimming Centre.

Invented by Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Dr Elham Doroodchi (UON) and developed by Granite Power, GRANEX is a heat conversion technology that generates low cost, zero carbon emission electricity from any available heat sources, such as industrial waste heat, solar and geothermal energy sources.

Professor Moghtaderi said the project provides a working proof that this breakthrough technology generates electricity for commercial use or sale into the Grid, improves productivity and quickly pays for itself.

The duo went first to Hertfordshire to see the new range of laser-marking workstations

by Electrox – a 600 Group subsidiary – recently exhibited with great success at the biennial machine tool exhibition, MACH 2014, at the vast NEC in Birmingham.

“The new family of laser markers offers significant benefits, not least of which is eliminating consumables, said Mr Griffiths.

“Such operating costs as purchasing replacement lamps and filters are a thing of the past, right across the new range – from the entry-level EMS 100, through the selfcontained EMS 200 with integrated laser and wrap-around door, to the large enclosure EMS 300 for more complex applications.”

The Electrox design team have studied the needs of end-users, and increased the capability of the new family, but not only in speed and accuracy. These machines have traditionally been used exclusively for engraving, but further refinement of the laser’s already exceptional performance means that these workstations can now cut, too.

Mr O’Doherty added: “Australia’s industrial companies are now able to permanently mark their products, and eliminate the possibility of a decal or label fading or falling-off and irritating their global customers.

“Another thing we saw in the manufacturing plan in Letchworth, Hertfordshire is the substantial increase in output of Electrox systems, meaning that customers in Australia now have much shorter lead times for the latest laser-marking technology.”

of the Colchester and Harrison lathes that have been the cornerstone of workshops throughout the world for more than a century.

“After a factory tour of the fullyrefurbished facility, which has created a new beginning for one of the oldest machine tool builders in the world, we were introduced to the new Tornado EL series of CNC lathes which is built on site, said Mr O’Doherty.

“The Tornado EL is a typical Colchester product, with quality and reliability stamped all over it. The new series is a CNC lathe that is competitively-priced for the Australian market. The visit focused on developing product knowledge and servicing skills, and was very informative.”

The requirement of end-users for turning and mill-turning with speed and accuracy influenced the design of the newcomers.

The four machines in the series can have full C axis interpolation, spindle disc-brake, and driven tooling, making such tasks as radial and axial milling, drilling, boring, and tapping easier than they’ve ever been before.

Mr O’Doherty noted that even the smallest member of the family, the two-axis Tornado T2, was very capable. It has a swingover bed of 440mm, giving an improved maximum turned length of 420mm and max turned diameter of 215mm. The T2’s bar capacity is 46mm.

“A massive 60° slant-bed and an unstressed, fabricated and ballasted plinth

ensure unrivalled levels of strength and vibration-damping in a lathe 20 percent heavier than comparable machines, Mr O’Doherty added.

The genial managing director of 600 Machine Tools, Cliff Purser, said the handson knowledge gathered by 600 engineers on such visits to OEMs is passed-on to workshop managers and skilled tradesmen all over Australia.

“Irrespective of whether a workshop services ‘big stuff’ for the mining, construction, and earthmoving industries, or produces tiny components for the electronics or aviation industries, the Electrox and Tornado machines are designed to enhance the competitiveness of their users.”

In his view, the four factors of capability, capacity, accuracy, and speed – in combination – give factories and workshops an edge while retaining existing customers and, importantly, when responding to enquiries from prospective new ones.

“Peter and Pat have returned to Australia now, having completed intensive courses that have advanced their product knowledge and its deployment in Australia’s industrial scene – which, I might add, is visibly returning to robust health,” Mr Purser said.

FLIR has added a number of enhancements to its F-Series and PT-Series security cameras.

These models now include a new, user-friendly web interface and an enhanced level of security with three login levels and continuous e-zoom functionality.

E-zoom functionality is now added to all 640x480 versions of the F-Series and PT-Series cameras. This means there are no more fixed intervals while using the zoom functionality. Users can now stop at any zoom position. The e-zoom appears as a very smooth and continuous image along the entire zoom range.

Other new features include the new web interface that offers a live streaming video page and web-based camera controls (for pan-tilt-zoom functionality, preset and scan lists, AGC presets and more).

And for enhanced security there are now three login levels (user, expert and admin).

With FLIR F-Series thermal security cameras you can see intruders and other threats to your facility clearly in total darkness and in bad weather. They are fully enabled for control and operation over digital and analog networks.

F-Series thermal imaging cameras are available in 160 × 120, 320 × 240, and high-resolution 640 × 480 formats, providing up to 16 times the image clarity and longer threat detection range performance than lower resolution cameras.

HOT WATER CASCADE SYSTEM FOR STERILIZATION OF LIQUIDS A new hot water cascade system enables liquids in closed receptacles made of glass or other temperature-resistant materials (such as ampoules) to be sterilized quickly, reliably and gently.

Developed by MMM Münchener Medizin Mechanik GmbH, the new system plays a major role in pharmaceutical/ biotechnology production.

GEMÜ valves are used to regulate the filling of the sterilization chamber during the process. This is first filled up to a defined level with deionised sterilization water.

This water then circulates through

a steam-heated heat exchanger and cascades over the item being sterilized at a continuously rising temperature of up to 121°C. In the subsequent cooling phase, the sterilization water flows through the now water-cooled heat exchanger and cools the item being sterilized down to a specific temperature.

Pneumatically actuated GEMÜ 554 globe valves control the filling of the sterilization chamber with water and the way in which the heat exchanger is heated by steam and cooled using water.

By contrast, GEMÜ 490 butterfly valves are used in the circulation line, as these have significantly more compact installation dimensions yet very high flow rates in comparison with pneumatically operated angle seat globe valves of the same nominal diameter.

Further, to meet these stringent requirements, they are fitted with highly resistant TFM plastic and FDA-approved silicone as a sealing material.

SNEAK PEEK AT EXAIR’S LATEST SUPER AIR NOZZLE EXAIR’s new PEEK 3/8” Super Air Nozzle has been engineered to produce the highest performance attainable.

The protective aerodynamic slots guide the airflow to a single point of convergence for hard-hitting force and dramatic noise reduction over typical blowoffs.

Its PEEK plastic construction provides non-marring protection to production items and excellent resistance to damage from harsh chemicals. And, it operates in temperatures up to 160°C (320°F). The PEEK Super Air Nozzle is suitable for blowoff, cooling

and drying applications located in general industrial or corrosive environments.

The Model 1104-PEEK 3/8” Super Air Nozzle provides a strong blowing force. High amplification of airflow produces a blowing force of 850 grams (1.9 pounds), with air consumption of only 35 SCFM at 80 PSIG. Safe operation is assured since the airflow of the CE compliant Super Air Nozzle cannot be blocked, which meets OSHA dead-end pressure standard 29 CFR 1910.242(b). Sound level is very low at 82 dBA and meets OSHA noise requirement 29 CFR 1910.95(a).

Available from Compressed Air Australia, the 1104-PEEK Super Air Nozzle is designed to easily replace existing wasteful nozzles or open pipes.
