WORKERS LIVES AT RISK

Calls for tough penalties and policing to prevent falls from heights Falls from heights are a major cause of death and injury in Australian workplaces. According to Safe Work Australia, about 26 workers fall to their deaths each year and nearly 8,000 others are injured. An estimated 800,000 Australians work at heights – and most in the industry agree there is a strong need for tougher regulations and enforcement by state workplace authorities. Australians who work on roof-tops routinely hook their safety harness systems onto roof anchors embedded in a building’s structure. The anchors are designed to prevent, or arrest falls. But earlier this year the Working at Height Association (WAHA) conducted an audit of 3245 roof safety anchors during a three-month period and found nearly one in three (31 per cent) was “unusable.” WAHA also found that no formal qualifications were required for installers, who are able to certify and fit compliance plates to their own work. Standards Australia, a world leader in product standards and compliance, has introduced strict new standards for fall

protection equipment – including anchor points. Late last year new safety standards were introduced (AS/ NZS5532:2013) relating to anchor devices for people working at heights. However, Richard Donarski, Team Leader Health and Safety, Product Services at SAI Global says although there is a certification system in place to ensure worker safety, it is not being enforced by regulators or government. Mr Donarski admits “there is a need for the various government departments and safety regulators to work out who will be inspecting permanently installed building anchor

devices to the new AS/NZS5532 standard”. “Bodies like Work Cover usually only get involved after there has been an accident or a breach reported to them – and that’s a problem,” he says. Mr Donarski says under current safety laws it is not illegal to sell or buy fall protection equipment that is not certified. “It’s up to the employer or end user who purchases fall protection equipment to make sure it complies to Australian and New Zealand safety standards such as AS/NZS1891.1 or AS/NZS5532 – and the product is certified, he says.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CUT RESISTANT SAFETY GLOVES Today’s companies are placing greater emphasis on worker safety than ever before. In fact, many companies use a prospective supplier’s safety record as a criteria for awarding contracts, which means businesses with poor safety records will lose profitable contracts to competitors have better safety records. Organizations are not only concerned about the wellbeing of their employees, but they are also increasingly conscious of the impact that injuries have on their bottom line. Considering that hand injuries account for more than half of all reported workplace injuries, and nearly 75 percent of those involve lacerations, high-performance safety gloves are an essential addition to any safe working environment. Equipping a workforce with Level 5 cut protection gloves can mean the difference between risk and safety, and is an effective step toward creating a successful Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) program. When selecting a glove for its cut resistance, the fabric plays a critical role in determining the effectiveness of the glove’s cut protection. There are several cut resistant materials used by glove manufacturers, and each one offers different strengths and weaknesses. The oldest and most common glove material is leather. Leather is highly abrasionresistant and can withstand contact heat at relatively high temperatures, making it an ideal material for machine shop applications or other situations involving the handling of hot metals or abrasive materials. However, leather only offers an average of 100-400g of cut resistance, which is less than ideal for many situations. It does offer flexibility, dexterity and grip, but since it cannot be laundered without compromising these qualities, leather is best used in conjunction with other materials. Commonly recognized as the bulletproof vest material, DuPont Kevlar is a synthetic fibre with a high tensile strength-to-weight ratio (it is five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis). Kevlar is an ideal glove material because it is fairly inexpensive, extremely lightweight and easy to integrate with other fabrics. However, Kevlar offers very little puncture resistance. There have been many examples of severe injuries caused by a puncture through a glove, with the sharp tearing the skin, and the glove remaining unharmed. Also, Kevlar can be itchy and uncomfortable, and is not well-suited for extended use in warm conditions. Dyneema (High Performance Polyethylene or HPPE) is a molecularweight polyethylene fibre that offers high cut resistance, even when wet. This material is

lightweight, flexible, and is ten times stronger than steel per unit weight. Used in a variety of applications such as glass handling and sheet metal assembly, it is also cooler to wear than leather, cotton, or Kevlar. Dyneema provides 50 times greater abrasion resistance than synthetic polymers and better cut resistance over leather. Dyneema performs well in chemical environments and resists degradation, but like Kevlar, it is not puncture resistant. It also does not mix well with other materials to create dynamic glove solutions. Composite yarn is a fabric made up of a core thread and a covering layer. The core thread is typically a thin metal wire, and the covering layer is typically a fibre such as Kevlar, which is wound around the metal wire roughly five to 60 turns per metre. Composite yarns have provided hand protection with higher levels of cut resistance, while maintaining the high levels of dexterity offered by Kevlar or Dyneema. By capitalizing on the strengths of the various materials used, composite yarns are often able to combine high strength, flexibility, slickness, and rolling action that allows knives to glide over them without

cutting through. This combination of attributes allows glove manufacturers to create PPE offerings that meet very specific and niche industries, markets and conditions. The main drawbacks of composite yarn is the loss of elasticity over time, metal fibres breaking down or shredding, and issues with electro conductivity caused by the metal core. SuperFabric by HexArmor was designed to meet almost every conceivable performance need. SuperFabric is created when a small armor plates are layered on top of a base fabric. This proprietary fabric provides industryleading cut, puncture, and needle resistance, exceeding both ISEA/ANSI F1790 and CE/ EN388 Level 5 protocols. With more than 4000g of cut resistance, SuperFabric offers the highest level of cut resistance on the market. This performance is enhanced through the unique application and configuration of tiny “armor plates” that provide a barrier from abrasions, scuffs, and scrapes, yet retain fabric-like flexibility. Gloves with integrated SuperFabric offer patented protection from sharp edges such as glass, metal, ceramics, as well as

various needlestick hazards. It also provides superior tactile sensitivity, even in wet and oily situations. Since the introduction of SuperFabric in 1996, HexArmor has provided over a quarter billion hours of hand safety. A major manufacturer of industrial gas turbines was experiencing at least five hand/ forearm lacerations per year. After trying several products, SuperFabric was introduced on a trial basis, and there were no recordable laceration injuries for the first full year the arm guards were being used. Since then, the manufacturer has reduced injuries while also lowering total expenditures on safety equipment. As more and more materials and options for PPE flood the market, it is more critical than ever to understand the hazards and work environment, as well as the materials that go into your PPE, their strengths, and their weaknesses. Through this understanding we can all contribute to creating safer work environments. Blackwoods Ph: 13 73 23 www.blackwoods.com.au

MANUFACTURERS HAVE EVERY REASON TO FEEL CONFIDENT Australia’s carbon tax is gone. The Senate is close to repealing Labor’s oppressive mining tax – and the Australian dollar shows signs of coming off the boil. Manufacturers have every reason to feel more confident. Scrapping the carbon tax will take a big cost burden off Australian businesses, making it easier to compete and create more jobs. And Australia will become a more attractive place to invest. It’s also great news for Australian families who should see a substantial reduction in power bills in coming months. After a gloomy start to the year, most of the clients I’ve spoken to expect to end the year on a high. And Swift Metal, a leading metal pressing and stamping company, tells me business is so good their marketing manager has had to don his overalls and join fellow workers on the factory floor. A recent Commonwealth Bank survey found that mid-sized businesses in the manufacturing sector had expressed

the highest levels of confidence out of all sectors in the June quarter. According to the survey, manufacturing recorded a confidence level of 22.5 for June, an increase of 7.3 above the previous reading of 15.2. The survey found that confidence among manufacturers was boosted by the lower dollar and the subsequent improved trade prospects, as well as “a higher level of preparedness and better business planning.” It found that more than half expected revenues and profits to rise in the second half of 2014. And Australia's manufacturing sector has recorded its first positive result in eight months, with the AiGroup performance manufacturing index rising by 1.7 points to 50.7 points. New orders grew for the third consecutive month, while manufacturing employment increased by 4.7 points to 50.2. Despite very tough conditions, the manufacturing sector continues to show strong resilience. Australia is open again for business!

SHOULD WE FOLLOW U.S. FORMULA TO REVITALISE MANUFACTURING?

There are moves afoot in the US to limit tax breaks for American companies that move their operations overseas. A new bill, introduced recently into the US Senate would prevent companies from deducting expenses related to moving operations to a foreign country. Under the proposed legislation, companies that move manufacturing operations back to the US from a foreign country would be offered tax credits. Senate Democratic leaders say the bill would end “senseless” tax breaks for companies that ship jobs abroad. According to a White House statement, President Barack Obama will supports the bill. And most Republicans have indicated they are prepared to consider the bill – with the possibility of some amendments. In its present form the bill would cost US companies that move overseas $143 million in additional taxes over the next decade, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation, which analyses tax bills for Congress. Companies moving into the US would see their tax bills drop by $357 million over the same period.

The difference — $214 million — would be added to the budget deficit. This is one of several initiatives the US administration has foreshadowed to help revitalise US manufacturing. President Obama says he is committed to making the US “a magnet for jobs and manufacturing so we can continue to build things the rest of the world buys.” The President’s plan also includes training US workers for high-tech manufacturing jobs and opening up new markets for American-made products. Obama has also floated plans to create a network of 15 manufacturing Innovation Institutes and to reform the US business tax code. This would include a lowering of the tax rate for manufacturers to 25 percent, expanding and making permanent R&D tax credits and putting in place a global minimum tax. We sincerely hope Australian government officials keep a close watch on the outcome of these initiatives. No doubt they will provide plenty of food for thought.

“If they don’t and something goes wrong they face heavy penalties and fines. “In the event of an accident, the first question a safety regulator or coroner will ask is: ‘Was the equipment compliant and certified to a certain safety standard?’” Mr Donarski says a major national education campaign is needed to generate awareness for manufacturers and users of anchor points to the new AS/NZS5532 standard. SAI Global can assist manufacturers, employers, and contractors get through the process of certification and accreditation. Mr Donarski says SAI Global has begun working with manufacturers of anchor devices to assist them in meeting the new certification standards. Employers have a key role to play when it comes to training and educating workers on workplace safety issues, Mr Donarski says. The onus is also on employers to ensure the equipment supplied to workers meets current certified safety standards. WAHA chairman Michael Biddle says the new standard relating to anchor points has “sent a shockwave” through the industry at all levels. This includes manufacturers of anchor points, installers and end-users (the customer). But Mr Biddle says the big problem is that standards aren’t mandatory – they are only recommendations. “But ultimately manufacturers have to make sure they are making products that are safe. “In the event of an accident, regulators would be asking questions of the building owner or employer to ensure they comply.

Mr Biddle says on average two people die every month in Australia as a result of falls from heights – and authorities should be concerned by these alarming figures. “It’s the third highest cause of death in the workplace after motor vehicle accidents and being hit by moving objects,” says Mr Biddle. “In most cases, regulators are more concerned in taking a reactive approach after an accident has happened. “There is a great need for an enhanced level of enforcement.” Mr Biddle says WAHA is not calling for “draconian” safety measures, but would like to see a more pro-active approach by regulators in the field. “If we had an increase in penalties and stronger enforcement of standards I’m sure we would see a higher level of compliance by industry,” he says. Mr Biddle agrees an education campaign is needed to inform industry of the new standards. “Education and training is always the key,” he says. “We must bring people’s attention to the risks of working at heights and the significant cost in injury and lost time that can follow as a consequence.” So what should companies or contractors look for when purchasing fall protection equipment? “The first thing they should look for is whether the product is certified to local standards, Mr Biddle says. “If a product has been certified by an organization like SAI Global it provides peace of mind for the people who are using the gear. “The next most important thing is to choose the piece of equipment that is right for the job. “Often people choose equipment that is not suitable for a

particular application. “Then you must ensure you have the appropriate training and competency to use the equipment.” WAHA, which represents manufacturers and installers of fall prevention equipment, called a summit meeting earlier this year to discuss the issue. At the summit there was overwhelming support for the following call to action for policy makers: • The safety of Australia’s fall prevention equipment installations must be improved • Compliance with Australian Standards for fall prevention equipment should be compulsory • Formal training for fall prevention equipment installers should be mandatory; • Fall prevention equipment installers should be licensed; and • Regulators should inspect fall prevention equipment. The call to action adds: “Users of fall prevention equipment stake their lives on the competency of the installer … WAHA is concerned that the unsafe installations will result in fatalities and serious compensation claims, if not already, and seeks immediate intervention by the regulator.” WAHA recommends concerned workers contact their state regulators for advice and more information is available at: http://www.waha.org.au/fall-crisis

The Research & Development Tax Incentive has been a popular and useful support program for many years. It was improved in 2012, with the new system adapted to better suit the way that R&D is conducted by most businesses. And more than just the classic view of bespectacled scientists in white lab coats, the R&D Tax Incentive supports any Australian development by Companies that is generating “new knowledge” for products, services and processes across the full range of activity – manufacturing, IT, mining, financial services, and much more. The Federal Government’s May budget has for the most part preserved the value of the R&D Tax Incentive. However, it has used the 2014-15 tax year to claw back a little extra cash from the program prior to the introduction of the reduced tax rate for companies whose taxable income is less than $5 million. From July 1 this year the R&D Tax Incentive benefit will drop from 15% to 13.5% for companies with revenue under $20 million. So for companies in this bracket not yet earning a profit, this will reduce the immediate cash benefit from 45% to 43.5%. For companies earning over $20 million, the benefit will drop from 10% to 8.5%, reducing the net tax deduction from 40% to 38.5% for the 2013-14 year. This is only loosely tied to the legislated principle that the R&D Tax Incentive was supposed to be “unshackled” from the corporate tax rate, meaning that changes to one should not

affect the other. It is more compliance in letter rather than principle. However, given the substantial cuts to other programs, the innovators in Australian industry are nonetheless breathing a sigh of relief that the outcome wasn’t more severe. The benefits will be restored to small companies (<$5 million taxable income) after July 1 2015, when the corporate tax rate drops from 30% to 28.5%. The R&D Tax Incentive benefit will go back to 15% of R&D expenditure for companies with annual turnover under $20 million. The benefit for companies with over $20 million turnover will depend on their profitability. Athough the basic benefit will be 10%, companies with >$5 million taxable income will be slugged with an extra 1.5% (parental leave) tax, which will erode the benefit to notionally 8.5%. Unlike many other incentives, the R&D Tax Incentive is a legislated elective entitlement programme. It is non-discretionary, and companies that are conducting eligible R&D are entitled to claim the rebate on their associated expenditures. Of course, companies that choose to take up these entitlements must also choose to comply with the requirements of the programme, most particularly including evidence and record keeping relevant to the R&D and its costs. This is just one reason why the services of specialist consultants can be particularly beneficial. As noted by Rod Campbell of Access RnD Tax Solutions, “More than just assisting companies in identifying all of the eligible R&D expenditures to be claimed, a professional consultant also provides guidance on planning and documenting your R&D. And given that AusIndustry intends to review every claim at some level on a regular basis (say every 3-4 years), we also stand behind our work by supporting our clients through that process for no extra charge.” Companies can lodge their claims for their entitlements from their 2013-14 from July 1. For many, this will be an excellent chance to claim a vital early cash injection for the new financial year. * Dave Sammut is a consultant for Rod Campbell & Associates

AXING THE CARBON TAX: HOW MANUFACTURERS WILL BENEFIT Ian Macfarlane MP, Minister for Industry The Australian Government has delivered on its commitment to abolish the carbon tax. In doing so we are making sure that Australian businesses, and manufacturers in particular, are no longer burdened by this unnecessary cost. By removing the tax we’ve made it easier for Australia’s manufacturers to compete against foreign suppliers at home and in export markets. The repeal of the carbon tax also assists manufacturing to continue to be among Australia’s largest employing industry sectors, sustaining and boosting jobs for over 921,000 Australians. Sectors like printing, wood and paper, and machinery and equipment have grown strongly over the last year and this change will sustain this growth. Manufacturers will save more in power and other input costs and consumer will also benefit from the repeal of the tax - the

BAC Workplace Systems

average household will save $550 a year. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission – the ACCC has been tasked with ensuring that cost savings are passed onto consumers. They have the powers and the funding to make this happen. Scrapping the carbon tax is a key element of the Government’s Economic Action Strategy. This strategy will build a stronger, more prosperous economy for a safe and secure Australia. The Economic Action Strategy is already delivering results. Since the end of last year, 110,000 new jobs have been created. Our red tape repeal day in March cut 50,000 pages of unnecessary red tape, as part of our plan to save Australians $1 billion in red tape costs every year. Signed Free Trade Agreements with

BAC Vertical Drawer, Racking & Shelving

Korea and Japan mean that 97 per cent of Australia’s exports to Japan will receive preferential access or enter duty-free once the agreement is fully implemented. And we’re working to scrap the mining tax. We’re working on more action to make life easier for manufacturers and other industry sectors. Another red tape repeal day is planned for later this year and we are simplifying and streamlining Government services available to business, including the way they are delivered. This year’s Budget introduced the $484 million Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program and the Single Business Service to deliver it. This program will drive business competitiveness and promote economic growth by supporting business improvement and the commercialisation of new ideas.

REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY UP TO 25% WITH NEW HV TRANSFORMER

Powerstar HV MAX is a high voltage transformer with an amorphous metal core that can deliver high energy savings, reduced carbon emissions and savings of up to 75 percent more than conventional steel core transformers. The unit uses Powerstar MAX electronic-dynamic intelligent technology to provide a variable voltage output, which will achieve high efficiency and save huge amounts of energy for a site. Older transformers have high levels of standing losses and the majority of modern transformers used on commercial sites use Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) steel within their core, which still provides significant losses for buildings in comparison to amorphous steel. CRGO steel is usually supplied by the producing mills in coil form and it has to be cut into laminations that are then used to form a transformer core, which is an integral part of any transformer.

Powerstar HV MAX includes amorphous alloy, with super magnetic characteristics. It comprises a noncrystalline structure with atoms randomly arranged and quick magnetisation switches to minimise the losses. Amorphous metal contains ferromagnetic elements alloyed with a glass former. These materials have high magnetic susceptibility (assists in increasing efficiency levels) with low coercivity and high electrical resistance. The high resistance leads to low losses when subjected to alternating magnetic fields. This results in transformers that use amorphous metal at its core – such as Powerstar HV MAX – reducing standing losses, delivering greater efficiency and increasing savings. Powerstar HV MAX can be used to replace older transformers on existing sites or be included in new build projects in order to provide the optimum voltage

output for sites, reduce standing losses by around 75 percent and lower electricity bills by reducing on-site energy consumption. Utilising high voltage management technology, Powerstar HV MAX combines savings achieved from replacing an older high-loss transformer with the efficient amorphous core model, with the additional benefits of integrated electronic-dynamic intelligent technology, thereby producing a variable voltage output. Simply replacing a HV transformer with a super-low-loss amorphous core transformer will provide savings of between 3-10 percent compared to traditional transformers, along with reduced transformer losses. Powerstar HV MAX also combines Powerstar’s existing electronic-dynamic voltage optimisation technology to provide a further 12-15 percent saving. Therefore, the expected energy savings from Powerstar HV MAX could range from 15 percent to 25 percent. Powerstar HV MAX provides one combined solution to two common problems whilst also eliminating the issue of over voltage at source before it enters a site, which achieves high voltage management efficiency. HV MAX should be considered for any site that has its own HV distribution transformer. Powerstar HV MAX is ideal for new build developments, sites with older transformers and sites that have previously had physical space restrictions making voltage optimisation installations difficult to implement. This is because HV MAX can be installed outside, correcting

Big energy savings … Powerstar HV MAX

issues before they enter they site. The electronic dynamic technology of the HV MAX ensures that voltage is supplied to a site at a constant level regardless of the input instability. Companies choose to install Powerstar HV MAX technology because when the grid voltage varies (often throughout the night as the load on the grid disappears), the HV MAX technology is able to hold the site voltage at the optimum level and maintain a higher level of savings. The stabilised voltage output offered by the HV MAX technology is a vital feature for sites with critical loads, secure data and important operations that require high levels of reliability and security. Example sites include supermarkets, data centres, hospitals, hotels, education facilities and retail outlets. Powerstar HV MAX offers an innovative high voltage management, energy saving solution that provides significant reductions in electricity consumption and financial savings. HV TRANSFORMER Vs STANDARD DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMER Powerstar HV MAX is an electronically variable super-low-loss amorphous core high voltage to low voltage transformer with an integrated voltage optimisation triple-wound Powerstar system. The HV transformer and electronic-dynamic voltage optimisation solution is specifically designed to provide a system that is dedicated to saving energy. Powerstar HV MAX is the only fully electronically variable HV transformer currently available on the market. The benefit of having an electronically variable HV transformer is that regardless of the grid voltage variations the Powerstar HV MAX will provide a fully regulated voltage

12

industryupdate.com.au

output at the specified voltage (1.25V). The Powerstar HV MAX, can accept up to 33,000V input into the HV transformer and provide a fully electronically regulated output at 380V (user defined). The voltage output can be altered locally through the HMI or remotely (via the Internet as units are IP addressable), through BMS (ModBus) and through GPRS (remote access). Standard distribution transformers are simple step-down double wound (Delta – Star) transformers. Their main purpose is to reduce the high voltage to low voltage. Regarding system losses, both iron and copper losses are

significantly higher than super-lowloss HV transformers, and losses from Powerstar HV MAX are even lower due to its unique design. Even with super-low-loss standard HV transformers, the iron and copper losses are at least 30 percent more than the Powerstar HV MAX system. Reducing the voltage on the HV site as standard transformers do, results in the increase of the I2R losses within the transformer. For example, a 5 percent voltage reduction on the HV will result in a minimum 25 percent increase in the transformer losses. Therefore, it is not advisable to install an HV transformer and set the output voltage to 380V for these reasons:

1. Increase in the I2R losses. 2. Risking low voltages with the grid HV variations. The tappings of a standard HV transformer, which allow voltage variation on the HV site, are not automatically variable. There are mechanical auto-tap systems but these are exactly what they say, mechanical. In the event of these auto-tap systems failing, there is a loss in the electricity supply. With Powerstar HV MAX, all tapping changes are electronic (solid state with no maintenance required) and in the event of the electronics failing, these are automatically bypassed and the site electricity is fully maintained.

TAX INCENTIVES THE ANSWER, NOT SUBSIDIES A concerted push by industry leaders for government tax incentives for innovative Australian companies is fast gaining momentum. Barry Thomas, vice president and APAC Managing Director of Cook Australia, a leading medical device manufacturer, says manufacturers are not looking for direct subsidies. But under the proposed Australian Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Incentive scheme companies would be given tax relief for the development of intellectual property (IP) and subsequent capitalisation of the IP through the commercialisation and manufacturing processes. Mr Thomas, a driving force behind AIM, warns that if incentives are not provided for manufacturers, more companies will leave Australia to manufacture off-shore. Nearly one million Australians are employed in manufacturing, contributing more than $106 billion to the economy

each year. And manufacturing is one of the main sources of innovation in Australia. While the sector makes up just 8 percent of the economy, it is responsible for a quarter of all investment in research and development (R&D). Mr Thomas says Australia ranks seventh in the world for its inventions and ideas, but ranks 30th in the world when it comes to getting them commercialised. “That is appalling,” he says. “Australia is a great ‘incubator’ for ideas … but then other nations come along and pick the eyes out of it. The AIM Incentive is designed to address this gap. The main goal is to stimulate innovation and manufacturing within Australia. Currently, the Australian company tax rate sits at 30 percent – one of the highest in the developed world. Implementation of the AIM Incentive would make the commercialisation of IP and manufacturing in Australia more

genuinely viable for businesses. It would provide a reduction in the tax payable on any profits derived from the commercialisation of qualifying IP in Australia (either via licensing or manufacturing and sale of products incorporating qualifying IP). Qualifying IP for the AIM Incentive purposes, would be patents (including certified innovation patents), data exclusivity periods and corresponding licences to those patents. Broadly, qualifying IP profit would be taxed at the lower rate (a recommended 10 percent) with the standard corporate tax rate to be applied to other income. This in turn would create more employment, manufacturing and export opportunities – and attract overseas investment. Mr Thomas says a new website will soon be launched to further promote the AIM Incentive scheme. And AIM executives are continuing to lobby political leaders of the major parties.

AIM has developed a database of more than 100 Australian companies who support the AIM concept. “It’s all about spreading the word,” says Mr Thomas. Is this the solution needed to revitalise Australia’s manufacturing sector? “At worst this would slow down the decline and at best it will reverse it, says Mr Thomas. “And obviously that is something we would all like to see. “At least this scheme encourages people to ‘have a go.’ “If we don’t do anything, we will not achieve anything. “Standing still is not an option.”

CARBON TAX REPEAL TO STIMULATE BUSINESS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH The abolition of the carbon tax should help to stimulate business and economic growth and help restore all-important investment confidence, says the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). ACCI CEO, Kate Carnell said the carbon tax was a dead weight on the Australian economy. “Abolishing it is a win for consumers, a win for energy users and a win for business," she

said. "Australia's carbon tax was one of the highest in the world, making our key industries less competitive and providing very little by way of environmental benefit. “The Australian business community will breathe a sigh of relief that the carbon tax has finally been repealed.” ACCI congratulated the Abbott Government for “keeping its word with the Australian people” and abolishing the tax.

“ACCI also congratulates the senators who respected the wishes of the Australian people and honoured the Liberal National Party's unequivocal mandate to repeal the carbon tax,” Ms Carnell said. ACCI has opposed the carbon tax from the outset and the cost it imposed on business and households. "Business confidence will rise off the back of this decision,” said Ms Carnell.

ABB SIGNS FIVE-YEAR GLOBAL DEAL WITH SHELL

In case you haven’t noticed, a “green revolution” has been sweeping through the industrial landscape with businesses looking to improve workplace environments and improve energy efficiency. The revolution has brought with it a “greening” of office fit-outs, to improve air quality, energy use, water use, innovation and ecology. Tenants throughout Australia are keen to use space more efficiently and wisely to improve staff engagement and productivity. According to De Carolis Constructions Managing Director Matt De Carolis the “new wave” of office design is all about improving business outcomes to create a competitive advantage. Melbourne-based De Carolis Constructions, a leader in commercial office manufacture, build and fit-out is at the cutting edge of the move towards more efficient, enjoyable and environmentally friendly offices. “Increasingly, office refurbishment and fit-out is being used as a tool by managers to re-style workplaces and eliminate the spatial waste which inhibited workers’ performance in the last century,” Mr De Carolis said. “New technologies are forcing change – status windows, bulletin boards, silo-sized canteens and ‘water cooler conferences’ are out – the wall-less office delivering less workstation isolation is the new norm. “Even the company reception area is under threat. “The traditional company greeting area of 80 sqm is rapidly being carved up and transformed into meeting facilities and breakout rooms, as office tenants seek to make the

whole floor a more functional, dynamic and cost-effective workplace.” According to De Carolis, some of the more popular office design improvements include: • Modernising work stations which embrace high design values, materials and finishes, stand-up tables for casual meetings and workrelaxation-conversation couches • Clustering of departments around open plan offices and breakout areas for meetings • Low acoustic features as more offices convert to open plan and an ‘open door’ policy • Mega canteen areas – in some cases in excess of 400 sq m – designed to get all levels of staff together - from the CEO down • Use of technology to breakdown communication barriers and create an inviting office environment where openness and honesty are highly valued. “Offices that incorporate these new concepts are increasingly being used by commercial office tenants to not only reduce costs but define corporate culture, attract and retain talent, and improve productivity and morale,” Mr De Carolis said. “From whatever vantage point you view this new office movement, one thing is for sure, ‘offices ain’t offices’ anymore.”

ONE YEAR ON: SAFETECH-TIEMAN KEEP RAISING THE BAR

Almost a year ago, two leaders in Australian materials handling and lifting – Safetech and Tieman Materials Handling – merged to form Australia’s largest lifting solutions provider. In this exclusive interview, Safetech Managing Director Lindsay Wakefield gives Industry Update readers an update on how this “marriage made in heaven” is progressing as the One-Year Anniversary approaches …

The merger of Safetech and Tieman Materials Handling last October created a huge buzz in manufacturing circles. At a time when many Australian manufacturers were struggling to survive, these two companies were growing – and prospering. The new joint venture now known as, Safetech Tieman Solutions (STS), has defied the current trend by continuing to expand. It’s a prime example of Australian ingenuity. “It’s a good marriage … a very good fit,” says Safetech Managing Director Lindsay Wakefield. One company’s strengths compliments the others weaknesses: • Where Tieman were strong in direct sales Safetech

were lacking • Safetech’s focus on engineering delivers STS an enviable engineering resource • Tieman’s market share and its established, long term relationships with major Australian retailers and builders provides a platform for growth, as does the Safetech distributor network • Safetech has developed a strong web presence and web lead generation • Both companies have long and trusted international partnerships that offer both product and manufacturing sourcing. “Between us, we have developed an excellent supply chain,” says Wakefield. “Also, we have a strong partnership network overseas in China, Thailand and the United States.” Wakefield says one of the keys to the company’s great success has been its ability to design, develop and manufacture products in Australia. “Most of our competitors just import products from overseas, he says. “We invest a great deal in R&D each year to develop innovative new products.” Since the merger, Safetech has grown its staff from 50 to 85 full-time employees and added 1300 sqm of workshop space. Headquartered at Moe, east of Melbourne, STS also has sales offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. It has increased it team of highly experienced design engineers from seven to 10. STS is without peer for its experience, design skills and market knowledge. And no Australian industrial lifting company can match its range of products and international partnerships. STS supplies materials handling and lifting equipment for all industries and many of Australia’s major companies. The STS range includes Australia’s largest array of dock equipment, freight hoists, pallet handling equipment, workstation cranes and scissor lifts. It supplies nearly all industry sectors including retail, warehousing, self-storage, mining, manufacturing and construction. Its client list reads like a who’s who of Australian retail and mining.

Major clients include Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Myer, Target, K Mart, Big W, Liquorland, Dan Murphy’s and Rio Tinto. The secret to the company’s success? “We have chosen markets that are very conscious of having safe equipment that is of high quality, good design and is reliable, says Wakefield. “Our products are generally large and complex … we generally don’t produce goods in large quantities. “We have the capacity to solve unique problems and in many cases we are the only company to design and produce products specifically for major projects.” So where will the company be five years from now? “We will be the Number One supplier of hoists, retail scissor lifts and dock equipment in the Australian market, Wakefield says confidently. “We hope that some of our designs will be used by overseas partners so we can supply other markets.” A number of “parallel markets” are now being considered to distribute the STS product range. Wakefield says STS is also looking to expand its business with a range of industrial doors, using new and innovative overseas designs. “I can’t say too much about that at this stage, but you can expect an announcement soon.” All in all, the future certainly looks bright for STS. As a new force in Australian lifting solutions, the new company has the size and skills to serve a diverse Australian customer base. One thing is for certain – you can expect STS to be around for many years to come serving the future needs of Australian industry. GUIDE TO HELP PREVENT WORKPLACE VIOLENCE SafeWork SA has developed a guide to help employers and workers prevent violence at work. The guide, Preventing and Responding to WorkRelated Violence has been developed by SafeWork SA and workplace safety authorities from around Australia. Work-related violence – where a person is abused, threatened or assaulted while at work, includes both physical and psychosocial behaviour that affects the workers ability to safely perform their job and it has a

16

significant economic and social cost. The guide provides information on two types of work-related violence: 1. External violence – perpetrated by someone from outside the workplace and usually involving people working alone or in isolation. Public transport workers, security personnel and workers within the retail, hospitality and cash-handling industries are the most vulnerable. 2. Service-related violence – where workers are providing a service to clients, customers, patients or people within the justice system. This most commonly affects workers in healthcare, aged care, disability services, youth services, education and law enforcement. During 2011-12, 203 workers were assaulted, 246

reported harassment or workplace bullying, and 98 were exposed to workplace or occupational violence with more than 4,000 incidents recorded in South Australian hospitals where nursing staff required security assistance because their safety was compromised. Statistics also show that each year more than 70 percent of all armed robberies occur in retail outlets, with service stations accounting for a quarter of these. There is also a high percentage of abuse by customers within the retail sector which is often tolerated due to the “customer is always right” philosophy. The Preventing and Responding to Work-Related Violence guide can be downloaded at: safework.sa.gov.au.

ANYONE FOR VIRTUAL GOLF?

GOLFZON SIMULATOR GIVES YOU ACCESS TO 200 WORLD CLASS COURSES

How would you like to play a round a golf at many of the world’s finest courses? Well, now you can. With the new Golfzon Simulator users can play at famous golf courses from Europe, US, China, Japan, Korea – day or night. This includes the famous St Andrews in Scotland to Pebble Beach in the US as well as leading courses in England, Japan, China and Korea. And new courses are regularly being added to the list. Golfzon was first launched in Korea in 2000 and is now being rolled out in capital cities throughout Australia. The first Australian Golfzon centre opened in North Strathfield, Sydney in March. The centre has six “virtual” golf rooms, catering for up to six players in each. In coming months new centres will be established in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Golfzon can be found at hotels and resorts, recreation centres, residential developments, corporate boardrooms and some shopping centres throughout the world. At last count Golfzon had more than 5000 sites in 43 countries – the largest pool of virtual golf courses for any golf simulator in the world. Golfzon can simulate the exact playing conditions (including wind speed and direction) at any of its courses. Alternatively, you can create your own playing conditions. A special Swing Plate creates various slopes during tee shots and putting. It adjusts the slopes in detail for iron shots. Different mats are also available to simulate putting greens, rough and sand bunkers. And if you have a spare US$67,000 (excluding installation and construction) you can install the system at home. If you are not that flush, memberships are available at the reasonable rate of $100

per year – or you can play on a casual basis. The centre charges an hourly rate (about $65), which can be split between the number of players. Players can use their own set of clubs or hire clubs from each centre. Members can play against other golfers “online” in other countries that are linked to the Golfzon network. Competitions are currently held throughout the world – and Australian players will soon be invited to join. If you just need a practice session, Golfzon offers a special driving range. Or if you would like to improve your swing, Golfzon features an easy to use swing shot analyzer. Users can record front/side swing shots and compare it with that of pro golfers. The analyzer captures swing shots before and after the moment of impact. It also senses club head speed, ball speed and the ratio, which shows how accurate the shot was. A sophisticated and precise Golfzon vision sensor precisely measures club trace, impact and ball reactions. It exactly reproduces the same as the actual shots and realizes draw, fade and lob shots. When users play Golfzon simulator, the round data is collected and shown on Golfzon websites in real time so you can revisit your record, share them with friends via Simple Notification Service (SNS). Can the Golfzon simulator help to improve your game? “Most definitely,” says David Kim, Business Development Manager for Australia Golfzon. “Golfzon can improve your skills … iron shots, putting and driving. But the main objective is to have fun.” Mr Kim says all the golf courses in Golfzon Simulator are under license from individual courses, with royalties paid to each course per round.

QUALITY HOSE REELS A MUST FOR PRESSURE CLEANING Pressure washing equipment demands an extreme level of solidity and reliability in order to function in the field under such high pressures. While pressure washing units are generally up to the task, occasionally accessories such as budget hose reels can let down an entire pressure cleaning operation. Reels not designed to withstand these pressures for long duty cycles can buckle under the strain, resulting in warped flanges and spools and ultimately bringing the job to a standstill. Australian hose reel specialist ReCoila offers a word of caution against cheap imports or “general purpose” reels that are not specifically designed for pressure washing.

“We see a lot of reels in the field that we would consider not fit for purpose,” says ReCoila managing director Michael Pawson. “In addition to this making life harder for the operator, the hose reel can end up being a safety hazard – reels not rated to the required pressure can fail suddenly, resulting in potential injury to workers.” Pawson recommends ensuring the hose reel is rated to the right pressure for the job and has a very solid base design resulting in greater structural integrity. “We are the only authorised Australian distributor of Reelcraft hose reels, and we find Reelcraft’s PW Series pressure wash reel to be very popular in the pressure cleaning sector,” he says. “The PW Series is rated to 5000psi

which is adequate for most common applications, however we also manufacture and import other models capable of handling much higher pressures.” A compact dual pedestal design is incorporated into Reelcraft’s pressure wash reels. The PW Series is able to hold 15m or 30m of 10mm hose and comes complete with a high pressure water swivel for maximum product delivery. The swivel is designed to handle a broad range of pressures, temperatures and chemicals – perfect for agricultural, marine, equipment cleaning and pressure washing applications. A robust spring rewind mechanism allows for easy deploying and retraction. ReCoila has been building hose reels in Australia for over 35 years and is at the

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BOWEL CANCER Bowel cancer is easily treated if caught early, however it is still the second highest killer of Australians – both men and women. About 40 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer today – 11 of those will die because it was diagnosed too late. There are risk factors associated with bowel cancer, such as family history and increasing age, however 4 in 5 people who develop the disease have no known risk factors. Bowel cancer testing kits are easy to use The way to prevent bowel cancer is

through screening. The FOB (Foecal Occult Blood) test is inexpensive and can be done in the privacy of your own home. Bowel cancer starts as polyps – they look like “ulcers” along the wall of the bowel and take 5-15 years to develop into cancer. Polyps can leave a trace of blood in the stool (which you can’t see) and the FOB test detects this. If blood is detected, you might need a colonoscopy. During this procedure, any polyps can be easily removed – along with the risk of them becoming cancer. At a recent Gut Foundation event, an FOBT kit was given to all the guests. One of the guests who completed the FOB test, received news that traces of blood were found in his sample – despite him having no visible symptoms. He then booked in for a colonoscopy, where he was found to have serious polyps. They were removed during the colonoscopy, along with his risk of developing bowel cancer. More people need to be tested

Unfortunately the incidence of bowel cancer is increasing, especially in younger people. Testing kits are readily available from GP’s and pharmacies. And the Government even posts a kit to you once you are over 50 years. But only about 34 percent of people who receive kits in the mail, actually use them.

Remember, a one minute test done at home, can save your life. The Gut Foundation encourages Industry Update readers to be tested. For a free FOBT kit, email them at: info@gutfoundation.com.au Gut Foundation Ph: 02 9398 9546 www.gutfoundation.com.au

MENTALLY HEALTHY WORKPLACES ‘GOOD FOR BUSINESS’ The impact of employees' mental health conditions on productivity, participation and compensation claims is estimated to cost Australian businesses at least $10.9 billion a year. To protect profitability it is in the best interests of businesses to look at resources available to tackle these conditions in the workplace. So businesses are now putting considerable effort into managing work health and safety and the physical health of their people. New research from the VIC

Government’s Heads Up mental health initiative, shows that attention by a business to the mental health of its people – even small steps – can reap dividends. It can result in higher productivity, higher staff retention and higher quality recruitment. Kate Carnell, CEO at the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: "We've done a lot of good work in Australia over the last 20 years on occupational health and safety, but the focus has primarily been on the physical safety of workers, not as much on their

mental health. "Attention to mental health is an opportunity for businesses seeking a competitive edge, and the coming Heads Up website shows them just how they can make the most of the opportunity". ACCI, through its involvement with the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance, has contributed to the development of the Heads Up website and developing recourses to make it easier for business to make workplaces mentally healthy. The HeadsUp online tool provides access to a range of information and

tip sheets to help employers deal with psychological health and safety issues. Businesses can register on the Heads Up website to select the resources best suited to their needs.

IT’S AUGUST: TIME TO FOCUS ON WORKPLACE HEALTH

The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is calling on tradies to take care of their health and to better manage their

24

work, life and safety habits as part of Tradies National Health Month this month. Tradies have among the highest number of injuries, musculoskeletal conditions and other health and safety risks of any profession. Nearly one in every five serious workplace-related injuries involves a tradie. Within the manufacturing industry, there was an average of 60 claims each day from employees who required one or more weeks’ off work because of work-related injury or disease between 2007-12. APA National President Marcus Dripps said the association started Tradies National

Health Month to raise awareness among tradies that they shouldn't ignore their health in the workplace. "Many tradie jobs are physically demanding but this doesn't need to be done by ignoring pain, Dripps said. "Despite the majority of tradies relying on their musculoskeletal health to do their jobs, many continue to ignore aches, pains and body stress – which often means an early retirement, or worse, living with a disability and debilitation.” Musculoskeletal health is a major issue in Australia estimated to cost $20.9 billion in direct health and lost

productivity costs. “Tradies are among the highest at risk so it is imperative early intervention and treatments such as physiotherapy become the norm among this group,” said Mr Dripps. During August, the APA and Steel Blue will promote health and safety tips for tradies as physiotherapists visit construction sites around the country. Tradies and trade companies are encouraged to register and be involved in this important initiative. For more information visit: www.tradieshealth.com.au

HOW TO SAVE ON ENERGY COSTS USING COMPRESSED AIR The most expensive component in the total cost of compressed air is energy. In fact, over the lifespan of a typical compressor, energy typically costs several times more than the purchase price of the compressor.

The bottom line, maximizing energy efficiency saves you money. The first step to reduce compressed air energy costs is to measure and monitor your compressed air system's energy consumption, flow rates and operating air pressure. Small adjustments can reduce your operating pressure and energy costs while improving flow rates and output. The US-based Compressed Air and Gas Institute offers the following 10 steps you can take to optimize your compressed air system and save energy costs: 1. Turn it off There are 168 hours in a week, but most compressed air systems only run at or near full capacity between 60-100 hours. Depending on your shift pattern, turning your compressors off during the evenings and weekends could reduce your energy bills up to 20 percent. 2. Fix existing leaks A 1cm air leak at 100 psi can cost you more than $2,500 a year. Pipe systems older than five years can have leaks of up to 25 percent. Because it takes energy to generate compressed air, any air that leaks is money wasted. About 80 percent of air leaks are not audible, so to minimize these problems, third-party help in detecting these leaks may be a necessity. 3. Prevent new leaks
Be proactive and look inside your piping system. A clean, dry pipe indicates good quality air and no corrosion issues. Dust in the pipe is caused by particles in the compressed air. If compressed air

26

industryupdate.com.au

is not filtered, or if the filter is clogged, pressure drops will occur and the risk of end product contamination will increase. Sludge in the pipe is bad news and must be fixed immediately. Dust and sludge in a compressed air piping system will cause corrosion very quickly and will greatly increase the number of leaks. Dried and filtered compressed air keeps piping clean. 4. Reduce pressure. Run at required pressures, not beyond Each two psig reduction cuts energy consumption one percent. Check the system pressure and resist the urge to turn up the pressure to compensate for leaks or drops in pressure due to piping problems or clogged filters. A central supply side controller can greatly reduce the operational pressure band and orchestrate air production much more efficiently and effectively. 5. Check drains. Are your condensate drains stuck open?
Condensate drains on timers should be adjusted periodically to ensure they open as intended or aren't stuck open. Better yet, replace timer drains with zeroloss drains to stop wasting compressed air.

6. Review piping infrastructure
A piping system design should optimize transfer of compressed air at the desired flow and pressure to the point of use. Increasing the size of a pipe from two to three inches can reduce pressure drop up to 50 percent. Shortening the distance air has to travel can further reduce pressure drops by about 20-40 percent. The more flow through a pipe the greater the pressure drop will be. Pressure drop in a pipe increases with the square of the increase in flow, which means if the flow is doubled, the pressure drop will increase four times. Air distribution piping should be large enough in diameter to minimize pressure drop.

gives off heat, and as much as 90 percent of that heat can be recovered for use in your operation. For example, you can produce hot water for washrooms or direct warm air into a workspace, warehouse, loading dock, or entryway. The savings can really add up.

7. Change filters systematically
Inspect and replace filters systematically to ensure the quality of your air and prevent pressure drops. Go beyond the air compressor and compressor room. There are several air-line and point-of-use filters within the facility. Those are just as important to maintain as the air compressor and air compressor room filters.

10. Identify and eliminate inappropriate uses of compressed air Inappropriate uses of compressed air include any application that can be done more effectively or more efficiently by a method other than compressed air. For example, high pressure air often is used for cooling or applications where much lower air pressure is required.

8. Recover heat. Compressing air generates heat – re-use it!
It's simple physics that compressing air

By following these 10 steps and identifying and fixing these problems, you can achieve significant, immediate savings.

9. Emphasize proper maintenance. Ignoring maintenance costs more.As with most industrial machinery, a compressor runs more efficiently when properly maintained. Proper compressor maintenance cuts energy costs around one percent and helps prevent breakdowns that result in downtime and lost production. Protect your reputation and profits with proper maintenance.

BIO-FABRICATION THE NEXT ‘BIG THING’ IN MANUFACTURING

3D PRINTERS MAY SOON BE USED TO MAKE BODY PARTS

Australians may be just a few years away from being implanted with 3D printed body parts. Clinical trials are planned soon using the technique to enable the body to grow a new breast after a mastectomy. In fact, two Australian universities are now offering masters degrees in this practice, known as bio-fabrication. Eliza Whiteside was 28 when she found the lump in her right breast. It came as a complete surprise, as there was no history of breast cancer in her family.

“Not only did I have that one lump that I could feel

28

industryupdate.com.au

but I had 10 separate legions throughout the breast, she told the ABC. “So for me I had no choice. The cancer had gone into the muscle wall behind the breast so I found out, I guess, on a Friday. I saw the surgeon on the following Monday and by Tuesday my right breast was gone. Despite chemotherapy, she found lumps in the left breast and decided to be safe rather than sorry and had that one removed too. Eliza Whiteside eventually had silica gel implants, but as often happens, her body rejected them and she had revision surgery.

Twelve years on she's very thankful to be alive, but would relish the opportunity to once again have her own breasts. “I didn't have enough skin to actually have an implant that was anywhere close to my size, says Eliza. “I was proud, I had a decent bosom, but you know I went from being a C cup to an A. Really it would be lovely to have had the opportunity to actually go back to how I looked pre-cancer.” That dream may not be far away. Scientists at Queensland's University of Technology are using 3D printers to grow replacement body parts. Professor Dietmar Hutmacher, the university's chair of regenerative medicine, said: “Based on the experience and the expertise we have now to regenerate bone, we translate this now also into breast tissue engineering and we think that in the next two to three years we can also start clinical trials for breast reconstruction.”

The art of 3D printing, or bio-fabrication, is where

scientists print custom-made scaffolds using bio-ink and the patient's cells to regrow human tissue. For patients like Eliza Whiteside, her own breast tissue would grow around the implanted scaffold which would eventually dissolve, leaving the natural breast to thrive. “Those requiring this kind of surgery for medical reasons, whether it's prophylactic, so having it prior to it, or as a treatment for breast cancer, you know, this is tens of thousands of Australian women let alone women worldwide,” Eliza said. The big vision is that bio-fabrication will one day lead to the 3D printing of organs. But Professor Hutmacher says that's still more than 50 years away. “One of the biggest challenges we are facing is more complex the tissues become and when we move from a tissue to an organ, which means that we have to regenerate multiple tissues in one organ that we have to learn how we direct the biology. And that is something where we need more time to understand this.” Professor Hutmacher says it's not beyond the realms of possibility but it will take a lot of money and resources.

This is why QUT, in collaboration with Wollongong University and two European universities, have launched the world's first masters degree in bio-fabrication.

Professor Hutmacher believes bio-fabrication could be the cornerstone of Australia's next big manufacturing industry. “This is really a technology where I see a lot of scope for Australia to move into to create the manpower which will make Australia highly competitive,” he said.

• 3D Printing

CAMMPRO BREAKS DOWN CONVENTIONAL DESIGN BARRIERS 3D printing, the technology that is bringing revolutionary changes to all forms of industry, is often referred to by a number of different names. The term Additive Manufacturing (AM) has now been commonly adopted to cover all forms of 3D printing. Much of the focus in today’s media is on how AM can provide high end patientspecific solutions in bio-medical applications. This is certainly true, and especially from a research and development point of view. However, the concurrent developments in AM technologies that are providing us with access to higher resolution printers and a much greater range of materials and composite material choices are breathing new life into small to medium engineering and manufacturing companies. The versatility of AM and the ease with which it can be incorporated into an existing business structure allows manufactures to provide new solutions to their customers and also capture new customers who previously would have had to deal with a number of different companies before they could bring a device or product to production. Now, manufacturers can provide an inhouse end-to-end production solution, from concept, to prototype and onwards to final production. An example is CammPro, the newest arm of the Camm Engineering Group (TCEG), an Illawarra based polymer products manufacturer with 25 years’ experience serving the steel, automotive, timber and mining industries. Conventional design barriers have been broken down with the installation of an Objet Connex350. Greater design capabilities have been enabled and allow the group to provide innovative solutions that are having a direct positive impact on their customers

businesses. It is often the case that small series production of components are required by industry. At the same time, it may be impractical to produce the complete series by AM and certainly prohibitively expensive to justify production of bespoke metal tooling. In this middle-ground AM is able to provide solutions that make the series feasible. A Queensland based mining company required the production of polyurethane v-blocks. It was envisaged that a series of about 20 units would be required. The design called for a large number of machining operations and repositioning of the work piece. Instead of machining a pattern from which a mould could be produced it was much more cost and time effective to print the pattern directly. The resolution and excellent surface finish that is now achievable through AM and some basic manual finishing makes this feasible. The completed pattern was then cast in a high density polyurethane mould and cured. Removal of the pattern resulted in a practical mould with durability suitable for the project. “We undertook this project as an experiment to prove the moulding process with Objet Vero materials. This capability allows us to provide our customers with a much greater level of mould complexity while maintaining accuracy,” says Zahra Shahbazian, Business Development Manager, CammPro. A global leader in the provision of equipment and services to the cement and minerals industries, FLSmidth produce a range of easily serviceable conveyor systems. Complete systems represent a significant capital investment to their customers. So as to differentiate themselves from their competitors FLSmidth Australia

A fully functional 1:5 scale model of a serviceable conveyor roller assembly produced by additive fabrication as a sales tool. The complete assembly clearly demonstrates the mechanisms operation to potential clients within FLSmidth’s global operations.

commissioned a scaled model of a conveyor roller unit that would incorporate all operating functionality. Detailed CAD drawings of the product were provided so that a scaled model configured for the best possible printing results could be prepared. One of the great benefits of AM is the capability to incorporate moving components into an assembly. With the multi-material capability of the Connex technology it was possible to assign different colours to separate elements of the assembly highlighting rotating and static components while allowing for 200μm clearance between moving surfaces. It was also possible to produce a skin of rubber-like material on the roller surface to accurately represent the company’s product. Modifications also included a scaling factor of 1:5 so that full use could be made of the available build volume and provide a robust model that could be transportable in air luggage. “Within a week of making a small investment in a fully functional 3D printed assembly we were able to secure a $1,000,000 international sale” explains James Matete, Customer Service Project Manager

with FLSmidth Australia. The success of this initial project has encouraged FLSmidth to commission further models and is likely to lead to further innovation in their design and how they promote their products. 3D printing is having a profound impact on the complete spectrum of industry, from conventional manufacturing right through to next generation medical research and innovation. Solutions that were previously impractical or even impossible due to the boundaries of “design for manufacture” can now be freely conceptualised and fabricated. And the creative future of manufacturing and especially small to medium manufacturers who are willing to embrace this revolution is certainly bright.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 WAYS

The majority of workshop managers in the industries of Australia are aware that the 600 Group is a truly international family of companies that serves their needs, from the sugar mills of Mackay in northern Queensland to the coffee-bean processing plants of Brazil. However, not everyone is aware that the company provides “hands-on” expertise in such activities as bigscale cheese-making in New Zealand, fishing-fleet repairs in Iceland, manufacturing equipment for the oil and gas industry in Saudi Arabia and North America, mineral mining in Africa, not forgetting the turning of components for the biggest warship ever built in Great Britain, the US$5 billion HMS Queen Elizabeth. The company is the largest manufacturer of turning machines in Europe, and one of the world’s biggest. It all started in Queen Victoria’s reign, when the Colchester and Harrison companies launched manual lathes that were to become a legend in workshops from Perth in Scotland to Perth in Western Australia, and from Alabama to Zanzibar. These two brands are still producing industry-leading machines, for prototyping and volume-production, tool-making, and education, and continue to be regarded as the benchmark by which other training lathes are judged. There are two reasons for the preeminence of these 600 Group brands. Firstly, they have been designing machines specifically to meet the needs of the world’s workshops for about 130 years, harnessing breakthroughs in technology to their designs to make each generation of machines more accurate, flexible, and reliable. Secondly, the 600 Group is not a “drop the box and run” operation. Every machine is part of a package that includes being offered as the right machine for the customer’s needs, configuration for specific applications, installation and commissioning, training of operators, detailed documentation, and continuing support over the lifetime of the machine. Yes, that is what you expect in Melbourne or Hobart, but what if you are servicing the oilfields of West Africa or the Arabian Gulf? In every country where the 600 Group has an installed based of machines, there is either a branch of the company or an accredited agent with the necessary expertise to provide unstinting support and exemplary service – often on a 24/7 basis. Sydney-based 600 Machine Tools Australia is far more than the focal point for the Group’s activities in the states and territories of Australia. It is the AsiaPacific hub of a geographic cartwheel that has spokes reaching out to New Zealand, PNG and the Pacific Islands, The Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar (Burma). In this region, the Australian company sells and supports machines manufactured by 600 Group companies, and hand-

picked machines from well-known brands that require service and support from a vastly experienced team. One of the 600 Group companies, Clausing of Michigan, designs and builds powerful machines for companies that need rapid removal of metal on a large scale. Since 1911, the company has provided lathes to customers all over North America. Its current range includes large-swing heavy-duty CNC lathes that provide the grunt needed in shipbuilding, oil and gas, mining, papermills, and power stations. In the Asia-Pacific region, these built-to-last and purpose-built machines are sold and supported by 600 Machine Tools, and can be seen doing ‘the hard yards’ by turning large, heavy workpieces in the industries of the region. Clausing sells to more than 200 distributors in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Notable projects include the maintenance facility for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. And despite a certain female politician in Alaska believing that Africa is a country, the 600 Group deals with a wide range of customers in the 54 countries that comprise the Dark Continent, from the oil-rich desert-countries of North Africa to the gold-bearing areas of the Cape. Since the early part of the 20th century, customers in the remote areas of this vast continent have their needs met by 600 Group International, based in Colchester – the original Roman capital of England – where the Colchester Lathe Company was established in 1887. The company has branches or distributors in 24 African countries. Electrox of Welwyn Garden City, is a 600 Group company and a leader in an industrial market segment that is experiencing exponential growth. The company has developed laser technology that is at the forefront of product marking. This was most recently displayed at the MACH 2014 exhibition in Birmingham. In addition to branches in UK, US, and Australia, the company has knowledgeable and experienced distributors in Canada, Mexico, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, China, Japan, and Singapore, with Spain, Italy, Finland,

Peter Griffiths, 600 Machine Tools exhibits a Colchester Tornado with local distributor Managing Director Bernard Koh of BMT Technology at the recent Malaysian Trade Show

South Africa, and Brazil about to launch. Managing director of 600 Machine Tools, the genial Cliff Purser, endorsed the surge of interest in the laser technology for marking developed by sister company Electrox.

“To assist customers in the Asia-Pacific region, we are setting-up laboratories in Sydney and Brisbane, using two of the very latest lasers, for the purpose of developing applications,” he said. “Simply put, a customer with a product that appears too difficult or tricky to mark will be able to ask our specialists to develop an application that performs the required task quickly, precisely, continuously, flexibly, and affordably.” What’s new, pussycat? “Whenever I hear that song on the radio, it reminds me that one of the major advantages of being involved with the 600 Group is that there is always something new being created,” Mr Purser said. This year, the company launched the Tornado EL, a typical Colchester product, with quality and reliability stamped all over it. The new series is an entry-level CNC lathe with a design influenced by the requirement of end-users for turning and mill-turning with speed and accuracy.

The four machines in the series can have full C axis interpolation, spindle discbrake, and driven tooling, making such tasks as radial and axial milling, drilling, boring, and tapping easier than they’ve ever been before. Even the smallest member of the family, the two-axis Tornado T2, is very capable. It has a swing-over bed of 440mm, giving an improved maximum turned length of 420mm and max turned diameter of 215mm. The T2’s bar capacity is 46mm. A massive 60° slant-bed and an unstressed, fabricated and ballasted plinth ensure unrivalled levels of strength and vibration-damping in a lathe 20 percent heavier than comparable machines, Mr Purser explained. Mr Purser says the UK-based 600 Group has been meeting the needs of workshop managers for well over a century. “Thousands of man-hours goes into the research for every new product – including customer feedback from around the world – before the first CAD design is used to manufacture prototypes. “The innovation cycle is never-ending, and it results in exciting new technology for you … irrespective of whether your workshop is in Brisbane or St. Petersburg.” 600 Machine Tools Ph: 02 9674 4738 www.600machinery.com.au

TUBE BENDING MACHINE HELPS BOOST PRODUCTION A Unison all-electric CNC tube bending machine is helping UK specialist tube bending company T+T Tubecraft to accelerate production of precision tubular parts and eliminate material waste through right-first-time manufacturing. Tubecraft has a long-established reputation for metal tube, pipe and section bending. Founded in 1949 to produce parts for aircraft and motorcycles, the company nowadays serves a diverse customer base including pharmaceutical, petrochemical, aerospace and food processing industries. Tubecraft also has a particularly strong presence in the oil and gas sector – including bending rigid small-bore hydraulic tubes for several subsea equipment manufacturers. Tubecraft's pipe and tube bending services have been based on hydraulicallypowered machines, although in recent years it also invested in several hybrid hydraulicelectric machines. However, an increasing proportion of the company’s business is for very demanding shapes and smaller batch runs – which are not ideally suited to production on hydraulic tube benders. Many of the company's oil and gas projects fall into this category. Setting up a hydraulic tube bending machine to consistently produce parts of this complexity can be very time-consuming; it usually takes Tubecraft’s specialists about 90 minutes to fit the tooling and configure a machine for bending a particular part. It's then necessary to bend two or three trial parts, making minor machine adjustments each time, before a part passes measurement inspection and production can begin. Given that more and more projects are generally produced in small batch sizes

– sometimes as small as one – before the machine is retooled for the next part, this time overhead soon mounts up. On average for instance, for manufacturing subsea parts, Tubecraft performs eight complete tool changeovers a week – representing as much as 12 hours lost production time. The company had looked at numerous tube bending machines over the years, including offerings from US, German, Swedish and Chinese manufacturers, and concluded that UK-based Unison’s allelectric technology represented the optimal way forward. The Unison tube bending machine – a 50 mm Breeze all-electric model with a multi-stack tool head for fast, automated tool changeover – was installed at Tubecraft’s factory in Woking in January 2014. It is networked to the company’s CAD facilities and a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) that is used to verify bend accuracy and design conformity. The tube bender can be programmed manually or by importing CAD data using industry-standard IGES or STEP files, while data obtained by the CMM from the first manufactured part can be used, if necessary, to automatically adjust the bending machine ready for a production run. large 2.2 kg filament spools can be accommodated within the printer. High-quality components such as low-play drives are used throughout. Trapezoidal spindles replace traditional metric threaded spindles on the z-axis leading to less backlash and higher accuracy. Since only one motor drives the z-axis, the X400 is less prone to step losses. All axes are provided with hardened shafts. The electronic components are compatible with the OpenSource RepRap Software. The modular concept allows easy access to all mechanical components and offers maximum flexibility for custom adaptations and future extensions, for example, milling spindles. German RepRap GmbH was one of the first German companies to market their own 3D printer based on an OpenSource project. GermanRepRap Australia Ph: 02 8030 8979 www.germanreprap.com.au

THE SEVEN KEY CHALLENGES FOR FOOD AND BEVERAGE SUPPLY CHAINS

AND HOW AN AUTOMATED STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM CAN HELP YOU SOLVE THEM David Rubie, manager Industry Logistics at Dematic, discusses why increasing numbers of manufacturers and distributors are taking advantage of automated storage and retrieval systems ASRS’ compelling performance-to-cost ratio compared to conventional manual warehousing for fast, reliable, cost-efficient automated pallet handling, storage and order fulfilment. challenges now facing this vital sector.

David Rubie … new challenges

The Food and Beverage (F&B) sectors in Australia and NZ are changing rapidly, with new trends and drivers creating new challenges for manufacturers. Grocery retailers are putting pressure on suppliers’ margins, consumers are becoming more price conscious while at the same time asking for a greater range of products, input costs including labour, raw materials and energy are increasing, and safety and product tracking regulations are becoming more onerous. All these trends pose significant challenges to F&B manufacturers’ supply chain and logistics operations. Leading F&B manufacturers are investing in warehouse automation to address these challenges and deliver significant and lasting competitive advantages to their supply chains and businesses. They are taking advantage of lower costs and the latest developments in automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) – driven by modular design and reduced subcomponent costs – to increase productivity and reduce costs, improve storage capacity and consolidate manufacturing and distribution operations, as well as maximise service levels, system flexibility and operational resilience. Dematic, a leader in materials handling and supply chain solutions, has recently released a White Paper that takes a detailed look at the trends and drivers facing F&B manufacturers in Australia and New Zealand. The paper demonstrates how the latest ASRS can cost-effectively address the

40

industryupdate.com.au

1. Cost pressures: the need to reduce costs and maximise productivity The imperative to optimise productivity and reduce costs in supply chains has never been greater for F&B manufacturers. Manufacturers are increasingly looking to insource their logistics operations and build supply chain competence back into their own business. For many, the timing of this presents an ideal opportunity to optimise their distribution activities. The rising cost of labour and decreasing labour availability – the latter primarily driven by an ageing population and a workforce increasingly reluctant to work in warehouses, especially cold stores – has major implications for distribution costs. While manufacturers have automated their processing lines, for many their distribution and warehousing operations remain highly labour-intensive. In recent years, many companies across different sectors have increased labour productivity through human resources measures. Many are now recognising that having implemented these measures to their full extent, the next step change in improving labour productivity will be through investment in productivityenhancing technology. Increasing productivity and reducing costs with ASRS ASRS fully automate the process of product storage and handling, eliminating “touches” by operators, greatly reducing warehouse labour and operating costs. Although highly dependent on the specific inventory profile of a manufacturer, productivity gains of up to 20% - 30% can typically be realised with ASRS. ASRS also reduce waste, product and rack damage associated with forklift trucks, and typically have lower maintenance requirements in comparison to forklift leasing and maintenance costs. 2. Consolidation of production and distribution: land availability implications There is a growing trend for manufacturers to consolidate their production facilities in response to cost pressures, reducing the number of nodes

in their networks to lower warehousing and transport costs. As part of this consolidation, F&B companies are building their distribution operations adjacent to their manufacturing lines, eliminating the costly and labourintensive process of shipping finished goods from a processing facility to a warehouse. However, the limited availability of land next to manufacturing facilities and the increasing cost of land – at least in high-density population centres – can make this prohibitive with conventional manual storage and handling solutions. By maximising storage density and allowing heights up to 35m, Pallet ASRS systems require up to 60 percent less space compared to conventional pallet storage. With a reduced building footprint, ASRS can make it feasible for manufacturers to build finished goods distribution facilities adjacent to their manufacturing plants, even where land is limited. And, by consolidating distribution into an ASRS warehouse, manufacturers can reduce safety stock holding requirements and total inventory costs. ASRS is also a very cost-effective solution for conventional warehouses that are running out of space. Replacing conventional pallet racking with ASRS significantly increases pallet storage capacity extending the life of the existing building, reducing costs and eliminating the need, costs and disruption associated with constructing a new facility or relocating. 3. Ensuring superior customer service levels In such a competitive consumerdriven market it is imperative for F&B manufacturers to get the right product in the right quantity at the right time to customers, more so than in any other industry. In a manual staging and despatch area, pallets need to be staged in trailerload quantities to ensure trucks can be loaded rapidly. Having a large enough despatch area is critical for dealing with daily operational fluctuations; however many dock areas have limited floorspace and the headroom is usually underutilised (as opposed to in an ASRS). In the event of a disruption, such as a truck breakdown

on the way to the facility, stock for orders is often left in despatch until the problem is rectified. This can lead to potential bottlenecks for other orders, which can cascade into disruptions to upstream operations, with significant impact on delivering customer orders. A very effective alternative is extending the use of ASRS to staging and despatch. With ASRS delivering faster cycle times than manually operated forklift trucks, pallets of stock can be retrieved from the system so they are ready for loading when the transport vehicle arrives in the yard. While pallet conveyors and monorails provide robust and reliable links between production and automated storage, the ideal solution for operations that are looking for maximum redundancy and flexibility are Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Apart from providing reliable and cost-effective pallet transport, the inherent flexibility of AGVs means that as throughput requirements and pickup and delivery destinations change, pathways can be easily adjusted and additional AGVs readily added to the fleet. 4. Dealing with increased SKU proliferation and order complexity Consumers are demanding a wider range of products, driven by tastes and food fashion trends, fitness and health concerns. Just one example of this is the shift away from mainstream beers, milk and soft drinks, and the associated increase in the consumption of craft beers, cider, soy milk and health drinks. Manufacturers are responding by introducing many new products.

Pallet in-feed and out-feed stations deliver goods in and out of the ASRS system

FEATURE •

Up to 35m high, Pallet ASRS automate the storage and handling of pallets and other loads like bins, cages and drums

In a manual warehouse system, the implications of handling additional SKUs means that everything has to get larger – more pallet storage and picking locations and more travel, which leads to slower and less efficient operations, in bigger, more expensive warehouses. By offering greater storage density and the opportunity to go higher, ASRS provide operations with significantly more storage locations for handling additional SKUs without increased travel. And with order profiles changing, including variations in throughputs of individual SKUs as they shift from slow to fast movers and vice-versa, ASRS can readily reslot product to ensure fast movers are located closer to outfeed zones, increasing system responsiveness. 5. Managing occupational health and safety (OH&S) OH&S is regularly cited as the number one priority for many F&B manufacturers. The movement and storage of heavy pallet loads, potential breakages and spills, all pose dangers to operators. Many DCs require complete operational separation of MHE and personnel to ensure operator safety and compliance with new work safety requirements. Apart from the human factor, Lost Time Injuries are becoming increasingly costly to operations. And an ageing workforce only increases the imperative to address OH&S challenges. A further safety factor, Chain of Responsibility, takes into account axle loading, and it is up to warehousing

operations to ensure compliance. ASRS, by eliminating the need for operators and forklift trucks in storage and staging applications, significantly reduce the OH&S risks associated with manual handling. ASRS deliver precise put-away and retrieval from storage locations, removing the risk of product, pallet, or rack damage. With regards to Chain of Responsibility, ASRS can deliver pallet loads to a trailer in the precise sequence specified by a host system according to axle load requirements. 6. Rising energy costs driving the need to improve efficiency Rising energy costs are also impacting on F&B manufacturers’ margins; this has particular significance for manufacturers with energy-intensive cold store operations. By maximising storage density and reducing the footprint, ASRS reduce energy requirements for cooling or warming the storage cube. This is particularly significant in temperature-controlled facilities where reducing the volume required to cool translates to significant reductions in energy use. ASRS systems also require significantly less lighting, further reducing energy consumption. Equipped with energy recovery technology, Dematic ASRS also conserve energy during operation. For example braking energy is regenerated and used by the lifting motor, enabling Dematic ASRS to consume up to 29 percent less energy than conventional non-regen ASRS.

7. Tracking requirements Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) requires food to be tracked through all stages of production, processing and distribution (also known as farm to fork). The aim is to enable quick and effective corrective action in the event of something going wrong, such as a product recall, and prevent contaminated product from reaching consumers. ASRS can be fully integrated into an operation’s Enterprise or Manufacturing Resource Planning, or Warehouse Management System via a Warehouse Control System (WCS). The WCS provides precise tracking of product movement and storage locations in real time. As part of its comprehensive inventory tracking capabilities, the WCS manages batch and lot tracking of products and, in conjunction with the host, manages FIFO and FILO rules. The WCS also seamlessly integrates other systems in the warehouse, including palletising, conveyors, monorail and AGV pallet transport, and picking technologies including robotics and voice-directed systems, providing complete systems management and visibility. In the event of an incident, such as a product recall, management can immediately identify the specific batches or lots in question and task the system to take appropriate action, such as bringing out the product to a specific location. Conclusion The latest developments in ASRS and associated materials handling and software solutions provide significant benefits for F&B manufacturers looking to address the latest challenges facing their distribution operations. ASRS provides distinct and lasting competitive advantage by reducing labour touches and improving productivity by up to 30 percent, increasing service levels, minimising OH&S risks, enhancing operational flexibility and resilience, while delivering comprehensive tracking, visibility and operational management capabilities. And ASRS achieves this using up to 60 percent less space compared to conventional storage solutions. ASRS allow F&B companies to review their complete manufacturing and supply chain networks and look at where they can consolidate storage and distribution to reduce total costs and deliver superior operational capabilities. And with the cost of automation falling significantly in recent years, the business case and return on investment for ASRS has never been greater. WASTE MANAGEMENT WORTH $10.4 BILLION IN AUSTRALIA Waste management services in Australia were a $10.4 billion industry in 2010-11, according to new data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). "The supply of waste management services was up by nearly $1 billion on the previous year, and there was also an increase in the sales of recyclable or recoverable waste," said Mark Lound from the ABS. The value of sales of waste rose from $4.6 billion in 2009-10 to $5.4 billion in 2010-11. Household expenditure on waste management services – which is mostly municipal rates – rose slightly during the

same period. Households spent $1.9 billion on waste management, up by 9 percent from 200910. The total amount of waste generated in Australia was just over 53 million tonnes, down from 54 million tonnes in 2009-10. "The construction industry and households were the main waste creators, each producing just over 14 million tonnes, said Mr Lound. “Waste produced by the construction industry decreased by 1.6 million tonnes or 10 per cent from 2009-10.” In 2010-11, a total of 31 million tonnes of waste was recovered, and 22 million tonnes sent to landfill. This is a fall of 14 per cent in

the amount of waste going to landfill from the previous year. "Masonry remains the most recovered

type of waste material, accounting for just over a third of all recovered waste," said Lound.

DUMPMASTER BIN TIPPER NOW WITH VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE The versatility of the Dumpmaster Bin Tipper has been enhanced with the addition of further intelligent design features. Though primarily used for the tipping of

Intelligent design … Dumpmaster Bin Tipper from Sitecraft

mobile waste bins, Dumpmaster Bin Tippers have proven to be effective in a wide range of industries and applications that require the tipping or pouring of drums, vessels and tanks. The Dumpmaster Bin Tipper is now available from Sitecraft Materials Handling Equipment with the option of a programmable Variable Speed Drive (VSD). This option was recently used in an application where a customer had a requirement to decant product at a relatively slow controlled rate out of a large square bins. In this application the heavy duty MegaDumper was specified due to the heavy nature of the product. The Variable Speed Drive enabled the MegaDumper to be programmed to accelerate up to full speed in 1sec then

slowing down by 50 percent once the tipping motion starts then decreasing to 20 percent of full speed during the final tipping stage. This feature can also be used in applications where a fast tipping speed is required initially then tapering off to a slow pour, much like petrol station pumps that allow fast but accurate filling of controlled amounts of product. The Air-Powered option for the Dumpmaster has recently undergone further development. This option is primarily used for tipping applications in hazardous environments, instead of using explosion-proof electric components. The performance, operating speed, and noise level of air-powered machines is very similar to standard electric ones. The machines still utilise hydraulics for lifting force, which give full and accurate

control of the lifting and lowering functions. The main difference is that the standard electric motor is replaced with an air motor, which drives the hydraulic pump in the same way as usual. If air pressure is lost for any reason, there is no risk of the load coming down in an uncontrolled way. (The load can still be lowered without air pressure, as lowering is done with a manually-operated valve). Apart from the air-preparation unit, the machines are almost indistinguishable from standard ones, and have the same intuitive controls. An on-board filter/regulator and lubricator, and a silencer keeps the noise level to around 60dB. Sitecraft Materials Handling Equipment Ph: 1300 363 152 www.sitecraft.com.au

HIGH COST OF NOT HAVING THE RIGHT SPILL EQUIPMENT The ramifications of not having the correct spill equipment or procedures can be detrimental on many different levels. Substantial fines, irreversible environmental damage, health implications and damage to surrounding wildlife can result from spill negligence. Late last year the VIC Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell warned that failure to comply with government environmental conditions would be taken seriously. “We will pursue any company who is found to be doing the wrong thing,” the Minister said.

Examples of companies who have paid a high price for not taking appropriate spill precautions include: • Streeters Earthmoving Pty Ltd – fined $45,000 over the unauthorised frequent spills of waste oil and diesel at Yarwun Quarries near Gladstone, QLD. • Lochert Bros Pty Ltd – fined $50,000 for causing serious environmental harm by polluting the environment. • United Water International Pty Ltd – fined $80,000 over polluting the environment causing environmental harm in the Barossa Water Treatment Plant. • York Civil Pty Ltd – fined $40,000 over

oil spills into state waters due to diesel and hydraulic fluid leaking from a capsized vessel. Such costly penalties, negative publicity and severe impact on the environment could have been avoided if the correct spill equipment had been used. Global Spill Control offers a broad range of environmental products, including polypropylene absorbents for oil and chemical spills, and a range of oil skimmers, oil containment booms, and oil/water separation systems. By investing in the appropriate spill control equipment companies promote environmental protection, workplace safety

– and most importantly avoid unnecessary penalties. Global Spill Control (03) 9335 5366 www.globalspill.com.au

SAFE, AUTOMATIC HANDLING OF SELF-TIPPING SKIPS With workplace injury claims growing across Australia each year, safety and ergonomic specialist Actisafe has released a range of automation to safely empty standard sized dumpsters. Actiskip is suitable for most industrial businesses, warehouses, government offices and depots, service stations, fast food restaurants, clubs and pubs, schools and TAFEs. Any situation where there is an OH&S

imperative to safely handle dumpsters (commonly referred to as Otto bins), the Dumpmaster is the strain free solution. Actisafe says Actiskip is ideal in facilities with several bins in use and frequent labour input that may lead to an injury. Actiskip eliminates back strain and uses a simple bump mechanism to release the skip into the waste container. In government department buildings, where

paper and cardboard is collected for recycling en masse, Dumpmaster is a safe solution. In manufacturing where metal offcuts are put in bins, the mass can be quite heavy and a danger for one or more people to lift (and probably illegal). Actisafe Ph: 1300 852 397 www.actisafe.com.au

Bestech Australia has unveiled a new circular sensor – the colorCONTROL ACS7000 spectral colour measurement system – for challenging surfaces. The ACS7000 performs high precision inline colour measurements on structured, highly reflective and shiny metallic surfaces. The colour impression of painted or woven surfaces often depends on the viewing angle. This not only applies to the human eye but also to sensors. The new ACS2 circular sensor illuminates the measurement surface in a 360° circular manner and provides exact measurement results independently of the working direction, even on difficult surfaces such as metallic paint. The sensor has a measurement geometry of 45° circular/0°. The sensor resolution (measurable colour distance) is ∆E<0.08. The sensor’s very high measurement frequency of 2,000 Hz enables it to be used in high volume production applications. The measurement spot diameter is 5mm; 9mm is also available as an option. The optimal measurement distance is 28mm. The colorCONTROL ACS7000 spectral colour measurement system from Bestech provides three measurement modes: colour recognition of up to 15 colours stored; colour measurement with trend analysis;

as well as spectral comparison, whereby the reflection spectrum of the test object is displayed and evaluated. The colorCONTROL ACS7000 colour measurement system with the new circular sensor ACS2 offers colour measurement independent of the turning position of structured, highly reflective and shiny metallic surfaces. Measurement applications are in quality assurance, textiles industry, plastics engineering, machine building and car manufacturing. Bestech Australia Pty Ltd Ph: 03 9540 5117 www.bestech.com.au

SMOOTH MOVE: SIPPEL SHIFTS 7-TONNE VESSEL WITHOUT A HITCH When the University of Queensland faced the major challenge of moving a 7-tonne molecular biology research vessel, it contacted specialists the Sippel Group. The job involved shifting the massive the double insulated thermos vessel a distance of 35m within the university. To complete the task the Sippel Group used a set of four 18-hp Airskates with a total lifting of capacity 10 tonnes. The two visible yellow low profile 460mm diameter 63mm high disc structures (pictured) are the AIRSKATE modules/units supporting the vessel. A crane was used to lift it from a

truck over a wall. It was then floated on the Airskate set down a plastic sheeted pathway into a specialised clean room for installation. Though some sections of the pathway were sloped, the Sippel teamed managed to guide the 7 tonne easily and safely in almost frictionless conditions, with just a few workers guiding its progress. The Sippel Group has been safely moving machines and heavy objects with 100 per cent success for more than 36 years, with no personal injury or damage to equipment, floors or buildings. The Airskate has been used successfully in nearly all industry sectors including manufacturing,

HOW TO PREVENT INJURY OR DEATH WHEN WORKIN

Michael Biddle, chairman of Working at Height Association (WAHA), explains how employers can protect workers from dangerou

Let's face it – accidental falls on the job happen. Even workers with extensive experience working at heights can lose their balance, trip or misstep. The danger of falling at height is real, and can bring devastating consequences. In Australia over the eight-year period between July 1, 2003 and June 30 2011, 232 workers were killed following a fall from height. This represents 11 per cent of total fatalities recorded in the period. The leading cause of worker fatalities on construction sites is falls, accounting for 37 per cent off all deaths.* Falls are strongly represented in other industries as well – specifically agriculture, (including forestry and fishing), transport (postal and warehousing) and manufacturing. Regardless of industry, the impact on the health of workers sustaining falls is significant. In 2011 alone, 7730 claims for serious injury were lodged due to a fall from height, meaning 21 employees per day lodged a claim for an injury that required more than one week off work. Additionally, a typical fall-related claim in 2011 involved 6.2 weeks off work, which is considerably longer than the 4.4 weeks for all serious injury claims.*

Fatal falls are often the result of a failure to follow workplace safety procedures, a lack of proper safety gear to perform the job, or the misunderstanding or misuse of equipment. The reality is that the effectiveness of fall prevention and protection equipment, no matter how durable or reliable, is compromised when workers don't use products correctly. When do I use fall protection? Where buildings or structures are in place and maintenance activities required to be undertaken, safe means or systems of access may already be available. For example, the use of parapet walls on commercial buildings, combined with walkways, guardrails complying with AS1657. Where there are no alternative practical means of access, fall protection equipment may be required. To ensure the safety of their at-height teams, this is where companies need to get serious about fall protection equipment and learn what systems and components are ideal for each job. Safety gear is not one-size-fitsall, nor is it one-product fits-all-applications. Different scenarios require different equipment. Provide the best job-specific equipment and ensure your workers are

knowledgeable about the products they use and their safety will be maintained. Choosing your equipment Typically we want to avoid the circumstance where a person has purchased gear for a job, without specific applications in mind. When it comes to fall protection equipment, there are four functional categories of you should be familiar with: 1. Fall arrest This is where if any risk exists that a worker may fall from an elevated position and therefore a fall arrest system is required. Fall arrest systems only come into service when an actual fall occurs; in other words, the device is designed to arrest a fall in progress. A typical fall arrest system is composed of a fullbody harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or retractable lifeline, an anchor point, and a means of rescue. 2. Work Positioning/Restraint Technique A positioning system holds the worker in place while keeping his or her hands free to work whereas a restraint technique system allows a worker to egress towards an edge

but not fall. It's important to remember that under AS/NZS1891.4, while a positioning system is not specifically designed to arrest a fall, all of the equipment used to create the work position must be rated for fall arrest. This was added to the Standard in 2007 due to the possibility that a person utilising work positioning equipment may have a change in their environment that moves their circumstance from work positioning to fall arrest and therefore need therefore to protect the person following a free fall. Such a circumstance might be the collapse of a balcony, a fall through a skylight when traversing a roof or other similar event. 3. Suspension Suspension equipment lowers and supports the worker while providing a handsfree work environment. A suspension system's components are also not required to arrest a free fall, so it's crucial to use a backup fall arrest system in conjunction with a suspension system in the event the circumstances change. 4. Rescue/Retrieval This component of a fall protection system should be in every Safe Work Method

NG AT HEIGHTS

us falls from heights by following simple workplace procedures …

Statement, however it is often forgotten or ignored. In the event of a fall, retrieval equipment is needed to rescue or remove a worker and bring them to a safe level. This could be either a self-rescue or a peer-rescue, depending on the particular situation. Such devices include tripods, davit arms, winches and comprehensive pre-engineered rescue systems. Choosing the right descent and rescue equipment depends on the jobsite and the task being performed. Equipping workers with durable and reliable job-specific equipment is a great step toward improved safety. However, the right fall protection equipment for the right application, even if it's paired with a written fall protection plan, still isn't enough to keep workers safe on the job. Even the most comprehensive plan will fail if workers are not adequately trained to execute the program and use the equipment properly. Training: a vital tool to a safer workplace Formal training is crucial for any person who performs work at height – no exceptions. Without such training, workers may not fully comprehend that the severe consequences of a fall, including serious injury or death, can happen. Until workers actually see that fall protection equipment can be comfortable and easy to use, they may avoid donning it altogether. Others might be embarrassed to ask about the proper way to use the equipment and use it incorrectly as a result, which will ultimately decrease the effectiveness, comfort level and usability of the equipment. Therefore, it's important to instill the value of fall protection training within your workforce. All employers should provide training programs tailored to their specific job tasks and environment. Employer obligations The statutory obligation to provide a safe work environment for all workers and visitors to a site rests with the site owner. Given that construction sites are typically littered with many hazards including falls, it is critical that all relevant state regulations, Codes of Practice for safe work at height and the Standard

AS/NZS1891.4 are closely observed. All these guidelines specify the involvement of a competent person to undertake tasks on a worksite. AS/NZS1891.4 defines a competent person as someone with "the skills education and experience to perform a specified task". It is up to the employer to ensure that only those people performing working-at-height activities are competent to do so. Who should deliver training? Fall protection training is best delivered by training organisations that specialise in vocational training and assessment. In Australia, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are independently assessed by the Australian Skills and Quality Authority (ASQA) for their ability to deliver competency based training against a strict criteria. TAFE colleges and private training organisations are examples of RTOs. They should be able to provide you with a registration number to validate their status as a current provider. Another method to validate their competence is to identify their details on the www.training.gov.au website, which will also allow you to verify the nationally recognised competencies they are registered to deliver. The bottom line Give your workers the confidence they need to conduct their work safely with the right equipment and with the knowledge to help their co-workers in the event of a fall. Equipping your team with the right fall protection equipment is a vital step toward a safer jobsite. However, none of it will make a difference unless each and every one of your workers knows how to use the equipment and, simultaneously, understands the consequences of not using it. Invest the time and effort to ensure your employees not only have the right gear for a given job, but are also using it correctly. Nothing is more paramount than a safe, application-appropriate fall protection system for your workforce.

PILZ LAUNCHES ROBOT SAFETY COURSE Australia is seeing a significant growth in the use of robots especially in nontraditional industries, as the relative cost of robots decrease. Also, more companies are turning to robotics to achieve improvements in operational costs and efficiencies. Now Pilz, a leader in automation technology, has designed a new robot safety training course to assist companies who integrate robotic systems within their supply chain. The one-day course examines how the risks associated with the use of robotic systems should be assessed and how to achieve safety while maintaining productivity.

Designed for technical personnel responsible for ensuring robotic system compliance, the course covers best practice standards including ISO 10218 and AS 4024.3301 – Robots for Industrial Environments – Safety Requirements. Participants will learn about risk assessment in robotic cells, common hazards and controls and robotic safeguarding techniques and leave with the knowledge to apply the correct strategy to ensure right first time engineering. Pilz Managing Director Scott Moffat says there has been a huge increase in the number of robotic systems used in manufacturing. But while the systems can deliver

numerous benefits, they can’t be at the expense of safety. “Our new Robot Safety course will enable participants to create safer robotic systems and reduce accidents, Mr Moffat said. “We have also invested in upgrading our SafetyEYE, a safe 3D camera system that allows for users to program various levels of danger zones letting the worker interact more closely with the robot without comprising safety. “The new version of SafetyEYE has an improved application range and higher resolution making it suitable for a wider range of installations.” The Robot Safety course will enable

DOES YOUR WAREHOUSE SAFETY RACK UP? The busy warehouse professional has many diverse and daily challenges – staff management, inwards and outwards flow of stock, forklift operation and maintenance – the list is never ending. It’s not surprising that certain fundamentals of warehousing can easily get overlooked in the “if it ain't broke don't fix it” mentality. One of these important elements is the

mainstay of the warehousing world – Pallet Racking. It regular gets nudges from forklifts, a beam might come unseated here or there, or safety clips get knocked by stock and lie abandoned on the floor. It’s not a big deal, I hear you say. AUSTRALIA ADOPTS INTERNATIONAL MACHINERY SAFETY STANDARDS Standards Australia has recently released a number of revised parts of the Australian Standard AS 4024.1 Series - Safety of Machinery to align with global standards and strengthen workplace safety. The revised parts have been individually issued at this stage with the entire standard due to be released as a 2014 version once the application guide (part 1100) is finalised later this year. The AS 4024.1 series provides designers, manufacturers, suppliers, employers and users of machinery with guidelines to help reduce the risks of working with, or near, machinery.

According to Scott Moffat, Managing Director of Pilz Australia, the Safety of Machinery Standard has grown in relevance over time. It has recently been adopted as an AS/NZS Standard and is now being revised to form closer alignment to the European machinery safety standards. It is also set to incorporate the new conveyor standard (AS1755) in the near future. “It is a logical step to continue to update AS 4024.1 Series to European standards as they lead the world in this area of machinery safety,” said Mr Moffat. Standards Australia’s Technical

Committee said the principle task of the 2014 revisions for the AS4024.1 Series was to consider the latest international standards and incorporate these into the original 2006 Standard. “The original standard was published as a series of small parts so that when new editions of relevant ISO, IEC or EN standards became available they could be adopted and published within the framework of AS 4024 with minimum delay,” said Standards Australia’s Technical Committee. In total 19 Parts have been revised. “Pilz Australia and New Zealand is well placed

to assist our customers with the revised Standard as our company has a rich European background and a large number of technical experts locally and globally who are very familiar with all the European standards,” said Mr Moffat. INDUSTRIES RALLY BEHIND SAFETY IN ACTION SYDNEY More than 4000 health and safety decision makers from multiple sectors across Australia will head to Sydney in September for the Safety in Action show – the largest exhibition of its kind. This is the 12th Safety in Action show to be held in Sydney. Presented by the Safety Institute of Australia, the free event offers three days of quality networking, learning and premium safety sourcing opportunities for anyone working in the safety sectors of their industry. It is an outstanding opportunity for industry professionals to keep up-to-date with the latest innovations in safety products with more than 150 exhibitors in attendance. According to SafeWork Australia there were 19,002 successful workers’ compensation claims for serious injury or illness in the manufacturing industry in 2011-12. And from the five years from 2007-08 to 2011-12, the industry accounted for 16 percent of all serious workers’ compensation claims. On average there were 60 claims each day from employees who required one or more weeks off work because of work-related injury or disease. Steve Wiggins, director of Verge Safety Barriers who will be exhibiting at the show, said: “Safety is an increasingly important issue for all manufacturing projects for multiple reasons. This includes, protecting the welfare of employees, providing a safe work environment and controlling construction costs. “By responsibly handling the issue of safety it can lead to cost reduction in the form of reduction in lost work days, avoidance of WHS fines and legislation, insurance costs and damaged product and plant/property. “In recent years too many incidents have occurred where inadequate separation between unsafe work zones and valued staff have resulted in severe injury and many fatalities. Gone are the days where a painted line on the floor is an acceptable means of separation.” Exhibitors at Safety in Action this year include Elide Fire Ball Australia and a revolutionary new invention for fire safety – the Elide Fire Ball. With the increasing number of older employees in the workplace, Hercules Complete Lifting Solutions will provide the latest solutions in strain prevention and risk reduction. And Toyota Material Handling Australia will showcase its vast range of material handlings equipment. A series of Safety Seminars will be held in conjunction with the show. This year’s program includes presentations on building safety, workplace bullying and mental health, drugs and alcohol in the workplace, and driving safety. Speakers include Fair Work Commission

Vice President Joe Catanzariti, Senior Project Manager at Beyond Blue, Nick Arvanitis and Siobhan Flores-Welsh, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright. Also, Terry Wong from Move 4 Life will give a presentation on How to Future-Proof an Ageing Workforce Against Sprain and Strain injuries. With sprains and strains constituting the highest proportion of workplace injuries in Australia, this interactive presentation is ideal for manufacturing industry employers and workers. The Advanced Logistics and Materials Handling exhibition will again be held with Safety in Action, Sydney. This is a must see show for professionals looking for packing solutions, industrial cleaning, manual handling and general end to end supply chain solutions. It comprises key logistics, supply chain and materials handling companies and can be accessed each day of the exhibition. And exclusive to Safety in Action Sydney, CleanScene, the largest cleaning and workplace hygiene exhibition will be again be held. Presented by the National Cleaning Suppliers Association, the co-located show features a large number of exhibitors catering for cleaners, facility managers, government agencies, and purchasing officers. COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO PUMP WASTEWATER A good wastewater pump is hardly noticed in a plant. Fitters and operators can get on with general plant improvements, improved efficiency measures and safety improvements. Owners of Gorman-Rupp pumps have time for these other tasks because GormanRupp wastewater pumps are engineered to do the job. They are ruggedly constructed and built to last. They require less maintenance than other wastewater pumps and are easily kept at their best efficiency point (BEP). Gorman-Rupp’s new Ultra V pumps are the most efficient self-priming centrifugal

trash pump now available, according to distributors, Hydro Innovations. They can be applied on flows as low as a few litres per second (l/s) up to 150 l/s, with heads to 90m. They are often “employed” by plants that have had problems or maintenance issues with submersible pumps, lobe pumps or helical rotor pumps. They can be used for pumping industrial wastewater, raw sewage, grey water or sludge. Operators find Gorman-Rupp pumps the best choice because they choke less frequently.

They also find them easier to access because they can be located up to 7.5m above the water level (and prime every time). Fitters find working on the pumps is very simple, where pumps can be left in the piping for their service – no need to send them back to the workshop. And where operator safety is concerned, having a reliable self-priming pump means a vast improvement in OH&S and the elimination of confined spaces issues. Improved safety levels can lift morale, lift productivity and reduce costs. Gorman-Rupp pumps are ideal for mines,

NO POWER? NO WORRIES WITH GORMAN-RUPP 12V PUMP A 12V submersible pump is the perfect companion for work crews operating in locations without power. The SE0.5B3-E.33 12V GormanRupp utility pump, available from Australian distributor Hydro Innovations, can provide flow rates to 150 litres per minute and heads to 7m. The 12V pump is designed for use with a truck battery as a back-up unit in

the event of power failure, or for use in remote locations where electricity is not available. It has a 250W 12V DC motor and is supplied with 9m of cable with battery clips (like car jumper leads). It is easy to manage, having a built-in carry handle, and weighs only 15.8kg. The SE0.5B3-E.33 12V has a cast aluminium casing with 38mm discharge

and a cast iron impeller capable of handling dirty water with solids to 9mm. A built-in steel strainer prevents larger solids from entering the pump. The power cable has an on/off switch and the pump is capable of operating for about 45 min on a fully charged 55 amphour battery. The pump is thermal overload protected and has a Buna-N mechanical

seal with carbon/ceramic faces. Hydro Innovations say that contractors, road crews, “telco” crews and anyone else required to work in dry pits, ditches or trenches will find this pump an ideal addition to their tool chest. Hydro Innovations Ph: 02 9898 1800 www.hydroinnovations.com.au

If the flow velocity in a loop reduces, it can fall below a critical value. But when the GEMÜ 650TL diaphragm valve is used, selected tapping points can automatically be closed by the central process monitoring system to reduce the tapping quantity and increase the flow velocity. The GEMÜ 650TL "safety valve" was last year awarded a prestigious Innovation Prize at the SIPEC trade fair in Orléans, France. With the GEMÜ 650TL it is now also possible to query the position of the handwheel. In this case, the position "handwheel closed" is detected by an optionally available proximity switch and communicated to the plant control system. Previously, this was only possible for the piston position of the actuator. Due to this improvement, a visual check of the plant in person is no longer absolutely essential. The position "handwheel closed" can be checked simply and conveniently from the control room. This optimisation adds to the reputation of the GEMÜ 650TL as a "safety valve", because the additional

functionality further contributes to protecting plant operators and the conducted medium. Even if the valve closes due to the prevailing parameters (shutoff of control air) and the operator inadvertently forgets to close the hand wheel, uncontrolled escape of the medium can still be prevented. www.gemu-group.com

According to Aussie Pumps, the new Tsurumi model, called the LH4110-W, will change the way mining engineers, quarry and construction operators carry out dewatering duties. “Being able to use one pump to get up to a 200m total head is a huge breakthrough,” said Aussie Pumps’ Craig Bridgement. “To think that Tsurumi have been able to achieve this with a pump that provides a 1,000 litre per minute maximum flow, but

Game changer … new Tsurumi twin impeller slim line pump

is only 23 inches (592mm) in diameter is a revolution,” he said. Tsurumi’s LH-W series are a super high-head version of the existing LH range. They feature two abrasion resistant, high chrome closed impellers and a centre mounted discharge flange that ensures the pump is balanced for lifting. LH-W range are available with discharge ports of between 50-100mm (2 to 4 inches) and are a slim line design enabling the pump to be used in bores and wells, with major cost reductions for users. The big benefit for operators is the pump’s ability to be able to move water from substantial depths without needing to stage dewatering through ponds or tanks.

The LH4110-W incorporates all of Tsurumi’s standard features that build reliability. Features include a fully lubricated dual silicon carbide mechanical seal enclosed in an oil chamber. This eliminates spring failure caused by corrosion or abrasion and keeps both surfaces of the mechanical seal lubricated and cool. The pump comes with a 2 pole, 415V motor, driving the impeller through a hightensile, stainless steel shaft supported by deep groove ball bearings. WOMEN URGED TO TAKE UP A TRADE TradeUP Australia is a new not-for-profit organisation working with industry and the wider community to introduce skilled trades as a viable career option to women.

58

industryupdate.com.au

Of the 1.43 million tradespeople working in the construction, automotive and electrical industries, less than two percent are women. “The main thing stopping women from considering becoming a tradie is a lack of exposure to what the work actually involves and under-confidence with performing practical tasks,” says Founder and Director of TradeUP Australia, Sarah Jayne Flatters. Ms Flatters, 25, is a licensed electrician and EnergySafety 2013 Apprentice of the Year. Opening the 2014 E-Oz Energy Skills Australia Women in the Industry Conference, she explained how a better gender balance could be achieved in skilled labour industries. “There is a lot we could do quickly and easily to increase the level of participation

by women in non-traditional roles,” she said. “We can talk to women about what it is like working in a trade, provide them with opportunities to develop some basic practical skills using hand and power tools and introduce them to women already established in the industry.” Based in Western Australia, TradeUP Australia has four initiatives aimed at helping it achieve its mission – speaking engagements, DIY workshops for women, an online mentoring forum and a website that provides easy access to information about working in a trade. “If more women understand the opportunities that being a tradesperson brings, like flexibility, financial security and the variety of jobs in the industry, we could allow industry access to an untapped, under utilised workforce,” says Ms Flatters.

“In turn, increased participation will help close the 17.5 per cent gender pay gap and enable more women to gain practical independence.” Earlier this year, with the support of Men’s Shed Association, TradeUP Australia hosted its first DIY Workshop for Women on International Women’s Day. TradeUP Australia has since hosted another two workshops, run by tradequalified facilitators. The last scheduled workshop received over 130 booking requests. It is already seeing results – the workshops have helped two participants to secure apprenticeships. TradeUP Australia is actively looking for industry and community support to continue implementing its initiatives. To learn more visit: www.tradeupaustralia.com.au

The Socket Outlet Test saves electrical contractors many hours when fault finding and compliance testing socket outlets on electrical installations.

It allows users to quickly and easily test the electrical safety of a socket outlet. And it eliminates the need for a trailing lead connection from the PE terminal on the socket outlet to the PE bar in the switchboard for the earth resistance test, conducts the 3 polarity tests between active, neutral and earth between the socket outlet and the switchboard and indicates a Pass/Fail test result. The Socket Outlet Test tests the active-earth, neutral-earth, active-neutral connections and compares the results to the 10ohm, 5ohm and 150ohm values from the connected Resistor Box. The test also eliminates the need for probing the socket outlet as users simply plug in the mains test lead with 3 pin plug into the socket outlet, press the Test button and the MI3125 to automatically sequences through

the required tests. The MI-3125 also allows users to set Pass/Fail limits, offering a quick and simple way to carry out compliance testing across and electrical installation, from insulation resistance of an installation, and RCD testing through to fault loop impedance. • AUSSIE MADE

IS THE AUSSIE MADE MESSAGE BEING LOST IN THE MIX?

Glenn Cooper … ‘education campaign needed’

When selecting a product, how do you know if it is made or grown in Australia? “It’s not always easy,” admits Glenn Cooper, newly appointed chairman of the Australian Made Campaign – the not-forprofit organisation that administers the famous green-and-gold Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) logo. Mr Cooper, the executive chairman of Coopers Brewery Ltd, who has been on the AMAG Board for the past seven year, is concerned at the lack of an effective country-of-origin labelling system. He is also concerned that buyers are confused by a “myriad of logos” purporting to promote Australian made goods nationally and internationally. “We need one logo that is easily identifiable and trusted, he says. “That is the Australian Made logo that has been around since the mid 80s.” Mr Cooper puts much of the blame for the confusion in the marketplace on Government departments. “Government departments should support just one logo – a logo that is recognized and trusted not only in Australia, but throughout the world. “That is the AMAG logo. The green and gold triangle is now recognized

throughout the world.” Mr Cooper says the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) has developed its own version of an Australian Made logo at a cost of $20 million. The logo comprises two boomerangs and carries an Australia Unlimited slogan. “What do two boomerangs and the words ‘Australia Unlimited’ mean to people overseas?” Mr Cooper opines. “It’s frustrating that Government departments want to go down a single path and create their own logo. Why re-invent the wheel?” Mr Cooper can’t understand why government is not doing more to support the high-profile AMAG logo. “We have a logo that is already recognized. Why don’t we start building trust in that logo? The AMAG logo is simple in design and carries a strong message. The green and gold colors are worn by Australian athletes in competition internationally and the stylized kangaroo inside the triangle is also synonymous with Australia. “It can’t be anything else,” says Mr Cooper. Launched in 1986, it is now used by more than 1800 companies on more than 10,000 products, across the country and around the world. Companies that display the AMAG logo must abide by a strict set of rules. “Those displaying the logo on goods must adhere to those rules and they are monitored. So you have to stay within the guidelines,” says Mr Cooper. Conditions attached to other “Australian Made” logos may not be as strict. In these cases, some companies may be selling imported goods under an Australian Made banner. Mr Cooper says an education campaign is needed to assist consumers about the

benefits of choosing Australian Made products. Given a choice most people would choose Australian Made products over imported goods, he says – even if they have to pay a little more. But in many cases consumers are not sure which products are Australian Made. Mr Cooper says one of the biggest problems for consumers is identifying which food products are grown or processed in Australia. “We struggle with the identification factor,” he says. Rather than increased “protection” for Australian Made goods, we should make identification far easier. To help achieve that goal, the Australian Made Campaign has been pushing for sweeping changes to food labelling laws. Earlier this year AMAG representative appeared before the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry to give evidence to the committee’s inquiry into the countryof-origin labelling of food. Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, and Compliance and Policy Manager, Lisa Crowe made recommendations to the committee on how food labelling laws could be improved, to build greater consumer confidence in the labelling of Australian products and produce. “Research clearly shows that consumers have a preference for food products that

are made and grown in Australia, Mr Harrison told the Committee. “An effective country-of-origin labelling system, trusted and understood by consumers, will strengthen this important asset for Australia’s food growers and processors. “This will help combat the number of companies attempting to mislead consumers regarding their products’ true country-of-origin. “Consistent food labelling laws would provide consumers with greater certainty in the choices they make at the checkout, and support growers and manufacturers of genuine Aussie products.” So why should Australians buy Australian Made products? “For our children and for our future,” Mr Cooper says frankly. And by supporting Australian Made, consumers are helping to protect Australian jobs. “You can’t push or force people to buy Australian products, he says. “But we need to encourage people to support Australian producers.” Mr Cooper says his main aim as the new AMAG chairman will be to explore ways to further promote the traditional logo nationally and internationally. HILLS HOIST PEGS ANOTHER TOP HONOUR Hills continues to be one of Australia’s most enduring and innovative companies with the Hills Hoist voted the nation’s most trusted iconic brand for the second year in a row in Reader’s Digest’s 2014 Trusted Brands Survey. Australians have been using Hills products with confidence for almost 70 years, starting with the hoist – one of Australia’s great inventions. The company estimates there are more than 7.5 million hoists in Australian backyards today. The hoist has also been installed in over 20 countries worldwide including the United States, Japan and India. “Hills is a company built on innovation and as we enter our 70th year, we are delighted with this result as it encourages us in our transformation into a provider of next generation technology solutions in security and surveillance, health and aged care, and smart homes,” Hills CEO Ted Pretty said.

“Australians can expect the same high standards of quality and reliability they traditionally associate with the Hills brand in the security, patient care, communications and audio-visual solutions we’re delivering into schools, hospitals, businesses and governments. “We continue to draw on the vision and ingenuity that led to the hoist becoming one of Australia’s great inventions in our search for technology solutions that make life easier and doing business simpler.” While Hills is famous for the hoist, the company estimates nearly every Australian home is using its other products including security cameras and alarm panels, analogue and digital antennas, and health and wellbeing products like MyLively. As part of its ongoing commitment to growing innovation locally, Hills has opened the Lance Hills Design Centre and D-Shop R&D facility in partnership with the South Australian Government and

UniSA, Flinders and Adelaide University. It is already making great strides in developing new nurse call and monitoring equipment for arthritis sufferers and is supporting the development of gaming technology for children with cerebral palsy. The annual Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Survey has been operating for 14 years as an independent survey of the Australian public. This year 46 categories were featured and more than 2,400 people were surveyed.

• Hills security systems are protecting other major Australian icons such as such as Sydney Harbour Bridge, Royal Randwick Racecourse and Perth’s WACA Ground as well as trusted environments like banks, schools, universities and hospitals. • Hills satellite dishes are being installed in all of Australia’s major overseas embassies and posts, significantly improving the security of communications.

COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELLING SHOULD BE ‘MANDATORY’ FOR ALL FOOD PRODUCTS The Australian Made Campaign is renewing its call for mandatory country-oforigin labelling across all food products. This follows an announcement by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) that this information would remain optional on a small range of unpackaged foods. FSANZ was originally instructed to develop a proposal to extend countryof-origin labelling across all primary food products for retail sale as part of the Government’s response to the Review of Food Labelling Law and Policy in 2011. However, FSANZ recently made public that mandatory country-of-origin labelling would not be extended to

unpackaged foods not already covered by the standard, including game meats, poultry other than chicken, eggs and cheese. Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, said he was disappointed that the proposal had been scrapped, arguing that extending the country-of-origin labelling requirements to all foods would have reduced consumer confusion and promoted confidence in the system. “Food labelling requirements should be clear, straightforward and above all consistent – all food, packaged or unpackaged, should be required to carry a country-of-origin label,” Mr Harrison said.

“Why should fresh chicken, for example, have to carry a country-of-origin label, but not duck or quail? Why should sliced ham have to carry a country-oforigin label, but not sliced cheese?” “Consumers want to be able to buy with confidence, and a big part of this is knowing where their food comes from,” Mr Harrison said.
According to Mr Harrison, the impact on producers would be minimal, and some major retailers are already labelling these unpackaged foods voluntarily. The Australian Made Campaign has called for mandatory country-of-origin labelling across all food products in numerous submissions, including to the

The Lencrow Group has been appointed as the distributor for the Dieci range of telehandlers and attachments in Queensland and Victoria. Lencrow is an experienced equipment supplier of a range of materials handling products and the inclusion of the Dieci Telehandler is a natural fit to its range. “We provide the complete solution for materials handling from pallet truck to container movers, says Ross Grassick, Managing Director of Lencrow Australia. “However, the ‘missing link’ in our market offering that we could not address was the rough terrain Telehandler. “Dieci are a global leader in telehandler design and manufacture and we are very excited about our new Dieci partnership.” Mr Grassick said Lencrow would target the key markets of construction, mining, agriculture,

infrastructure and rail. “We look forward to extending both our own and Dieci’s presence across these market sectors in Victoria and Queensland,” Mr Grassick said. Paul Jenkins, Director Dieci Australia said Lencrow is the ideal partner for Dieci Australia. “Both companies share very similar values of customer focused support and quality across all aspects of the business, he said. “In Lencrow, Dieci are confident they will extend their sales and support network across both states. Dieci sales staff in Victoria and Queensland will transition to Lencrow thereby keeping consistency of contact with the customer base.” Both companies see benefits and synergies with their current service agents, including Dieci’s Authorised

HOW TO DOUBLE PRODUCTION CAPACITY AND MINIMISE COSTS In today’s business environment, time is a critical element. Warehouse managers are often faced with the dilemma of how to process orders in ever shortening production allowance times. Customers are now demanding shorter supply times – “we want to order today and we want it delivered tomorrow!” And at the same time, management and stakeholders want and need more growth. In a typical warehouse operation where orders are being picked/packed the typical solution is often to use more labour or force staff to work longer hours to process orders. Inevitably, warehouse managers contemplate a move toward automated handling and its associated benefits. An automated conveyor system specifically designed to meet customer requirements, can and will deliver rapid and startling results. Benefits include: • Better than 50% reduction in labour costs

to process the same number of orders • Alternatively, better than 100% increase in the number of orders processed using the same number of staff and sometimes less • Significant “cost per parcel” reductions to process higher volumes of orders • Personnel travelling times throughout the warehouse is markedly reduced • Provides reduced incidence of recorded errors in order processing • Minimises the potential of OH&S incidents as operators do less manual tasks • A win-win-win scenario for business owners, managers and customers with regard to time • Can often provide more accurate order tracking and feedback • Offers capabilities to “cross dock” orders from receivables to dispatch for “back orders” or “urgent orders” on the same day that they are received into the warehouse – a major advantage given the above mentioned adjustment in consumers’ expectation of

time. Many of these benefits can be achieved with even the simplest automated system designs. Often, there is no need for massive capital expenditure associated with more sophisticated hardware and controls. Today’s system hardware offers excellent “scope” to upgrade from a basic system design through numerous growth stages within the company as it grows. This means you can start your business off with a basic system and build it up as your business grows. Put simply, manual handling is no longer a

sustainable production method – it certainly can’t support or provide growth. Adept Conveyor Technologies manufactures high quality conveyor systems in Australia, for a broad range of industries. The company has an enormous depth of experience and can assist with any materials handling project. Contact Adept if you’re considering a cost-saving automated handling system. With large spans, spanning over existing offices and amenities, the Life Fitness team was able to double the floor area in the allocated space. The unique raised floor concept created by Dynamic, has created large open spans beneath the floor, to be effectively used for assembling and packing areas. The existing warehouse has been transformed into a large storage platform, complete with safety loading gates and staircases to provide pedestrian access to the floor. Global fitness company Life Fitness recently approached Dynamic Warehouse Solutions to provide an effective solution for its storage needs. The storage and logistics of fitness equipment provides its own challenges due to the sheer size and weight of the equipment – with treadmills and large gym sets weighing up to 1000kg per piece. The use of conventional pallet racking proved a slow and ineffective way to store and access the items and lacked the flexibility to cater for the different sizes and nature of the equipment. The solution lay in the design and installation of a 1200 sqm Pro-span Raised Storage Area,

generation of 3D drawings, through to fabrication and installation on-site, Dynamic Warehouse Solutions were able to provide a turnkey solution and complete the project in less than six weeks. This allowed the Life Fitness team to carry out its day-to-day work with minimal interruption. From small racking supported floors to large raised office areas, Dynamic are the experts in raised storage systems providing “Innovative Storage Solutions for Productive Workplaces.” Dynamic Warehouse Solutions Ph: 1300 668 468 www.dynamicws.com.au

MRT AUSTRALIA HAS ALL THE RIGHT MOVES There are many operations found in manufacturing and processing industries that require multi-directional movement of products. The application of purpose designed and built components to assist in product handling is often solved by simple but unique products. One such product has been designed and introduced into the industrial market by MRT Australia. Sourced from their German sister company, the ASR range of Poly-Directional Rollers is now available for use in many varied product handling operations that often require products to be moved sideways, transferred perpendicularly or rotated. Available in a range of sizes from 40mm, 48mm, 60mm and up to 80mm, they are designed to handle light to medium loads of 10kg-40kg (per roller capacity). The unique one-piece design has proven to be a more robust design to the 2-piece units currently offered from alternative sources and the MRT design has been moulded with flared openings that actually assist with cleaning. All stainless steel axle pins built into every unit enable the complete range to be used in wet or wash-down areas within most industries. The simple but well thought out design of the MRT range means that the ASR product can be used in both manual (static) handling applications as well as powered applications, simply by adapting the internal bore sleeve to suit the driving axle used. The unique body design ensures that the rotating “barrels” are at all times in contact

with the base of the product being handled and the range can be supplied with barrels of Acetyl (POM) polymer – as standard, or from Polyurethane (PU) for special “nonmarking” applications. The ASR range is ideally suited to most manufacturing or assembly operations as well as food processing and warehousing processes across all industry groups, with the product suited to the handling of all flat based items such as cartons, trays, skids, pallet or slave boards and tote bins. The range has found ready acceptance in unusual applications such as stone cutting/ finishing machinery as well as car and truck tyre manufacture or processing. They are also being used to handle larger bulky items such as building sheets, plate glass and acoustic or laminated panels. MRT offers the industry’s tightest mould tolerances and only high quality virgin polymers in all of its moulded products. All top-quality MRT products are designed to perform – at a highly competitive price. MRT Australia Pty Ltd Ph: 0419 803 619 www.mrtaustralia.com.au

NEW PALLET JACK FROM LENCROW HELPS PREVENT BACK INJURIES Lencrow has just lunched its latest pallet jack with power drive, offering a much safer alternative to hand pallet jacks. The EPT20-15EJT is a pump to lift loads up to 1500kg. It is designed with 4.5mm ribbed fork high strength frame to give many years of operation. The unit offers increased safety with less operator strain in pushing or pulling pallets and with the automatic brake the unit will not roll away on slopes if pallet is elevated.

The unit has been fitted with anti skid drive wheel and auto reversing safety switch on handle. Ross Grassick managing director of Lencrow said: “This low cost unit was not designed to replace heavy duty power pallet jacks that have much longer duty cycles. It was designed to offer low duty cycle operators a unit that will stop work place strain injuries as well as improve operating efficiency for there sites. The unit work very

much like a standard hand pallet jack with addition of drive unit that offers braking.” The unit works in the same area as a standard pallet jack. Weighing just 150kg, it is ideal for use in shops and bulky goods outlets. The unit is self-contained with a built-in charger that can be charged at any power point. As with all of the EP green range, they are pollution free and work with a reduced

carbon foot print. Call Lencrow Materials Handling for more information. Lencrow Group Ph: 1300 536 276 www.lencrowgroup.com.au

QHDC CELEBRATES 30 SUCCESSFUL YEARS Gold Coast based family-owned company QHDC Australia celebrated 30 years in business last month. From its humble beginnings as a small powder coating business, QHDC has expanded to become Australia’s leading and biggest supplier of shopping trolleys to the retail sector and a rapidly growing supplier of wheels, castors and small pneumatic tyres. The Company also stocks and sells a range of stock trolleys and hand trucks. Some 20 years ago the QHDC team was chosen to refurbish a large number of trolleys

for a major retail chain. The end result was so good that QHDC was asked to design and manufacture new trolleys. The company now supplies the two biggest retail chains and many smaller businesses with trolleys and other retail equipment. With a new catchphrase “we’ll keep you rolling” QHDC decided to diversify into wheels, castors and more recently, small tyres and tubes. “This part of our business has really taken off,” says Business Development Manager, Bruce Atkins. “We have formed alliances with

carefully selected suppliers in Asia, Europe and North America and hired key personnel with combined industry experience totalling more than 80 years which has given us the ability to compete effectively in the market and to provide customers with great solutions and excellent products.” Last month QHDC launched a new website and a new catalogue that is also available online.
