This is Kabir Singh, I am a 3rd year industrial designer currently studying at MIT Institute of Design,Pune. I hail from Dehradun, a city nested at the foothills of the Himalayas.

Personal Project Duration- 1 week As the name suggests the final product was the fourth idea/concept of the wood marker. As this hand tool is a very basic and simple it has to be cheaply manufactured and most importantly has to function easily.

The main problem with the wood marker is its stability during scribing, it generally shakes and the calibrations are generally not visible and using a ruler is difficult.

Unstable while marking

Adjusting is difficult

In the conventional wood marker the scribing force is generated due to the rotation of the tool

But in wood marker no.4 the scribing force is generated due to natural pressure of the user.

MS guide spot welded to the stock This tool is made in stamped mild steel to keep the cost low. MS guide for the stem welded to the stock

the stem is made in aluminium stamped mild steel stock

Individual Project Duration- 5 weeks Simple Product Design Using fevicol in workshop can be messy and specially while applying fevicol on planer surfaces such as laminates etc. it drips or sometimes pours in excess. The objective in this project was to come up with a solution which is simple yet functional.

Currently there is no specific way to apply/dispense fevicol on any surface. The fevicol is stored in the 1 kg sachet pack in which it is sold, but the package has tendancy to leak and spread all over and dry.

In this concept the plastic housing/handle is filled with fevicol and in the front is covered with flexible spring steel sheet. when the tool is moved over the surface with pressure, the steel sheet bends and allows the fevicol to come out and in turn spreads it on the surface evenly.

The final concept had problems related to manufacturing and fesibility as a product . So the concept was carried forward and the proposed idea was to integrate the applicator concept with the packaging of the fevicol.

PP applicator,

works in the same way as the previous concept.

HDPE container,

it can hold 1 kg fevicol equal to the existing package.

Group Project Duration- 4 weeks Display, Interface and control For this project the problem chosen was redesigning interface of a Compact Projector. These projectors are designed to match requirements for powerful presentations in medium-sized venues, like offices, schools, and personal use where portability is not a major issue but they can still be carried easily.

The main problems with projectors is the height/angle adjuster and the focus/zoom ring, in front of the lens. The redesign of the OSD (on-screen display) was nesscary as the present OSD’s are very confusing and are not good to look at.

Ideation of a input device which works as a remote for projector and as well as an input device for computer connected to it.

Surface touch controls with proximity sensors

This is the quick view compact projector, it solves the problem of adjusting and correcting the orientation with simple dials on the side. The quick view projector has a SD card slot & USB slot so that it supports standard formats without the need of a computer. Zoom ring with tab for better grip

Dials for adjusting angle and correcting the orientation

Backlit power button large vents for better cooling

The Gesture Pad is a remote/mouse device for the quick view projector. It syncs to a computer, which is connected to the projector, via bluetooth and works as a mouse pad in laptop. As the menu button is pressed the device wirelessly routes itself to projector and acts as a remote control working on simple gestures.

Individual Project Duration- 4 weeks Model Making This project was to understand how to make models and assemblies. Random Orbital Sander is a power tool which i selected to redesign and make, using basic workshop skills and materials.

The Sander has some new features, which includes integrated hand grip for forcing down the sander on the surface and integrating the dust filter in the form so that it does not touch the surface in tight places

These are some images of the model made. The model was made out of materials like MDF, HIPS etc. The form was initally made out of MDF and then it was vaccum formed, to make it hollow, so that it can house the internal parts, like motor, switch etc. The motor model is made out of rubber wood.

Individual Project Duration- 8 weeks Techno Aesthetic Detailing VC 1 is a Vaccum Cleaner with added functionality of an air purifier. Specially in a dusty environment like india it helps keep air contaminants low.

The form is angular, geometric and a lot different from the existing handheld vaccun cleaners. The form and the packaging of components is also different because it is a cyclonic vaccum cleaner

Power Button and Light

Silicone co-moulded handle

Centralised Motor and electronics for better weight distribution Dust collection canister, no filter cleaning

The dock, with the help of vaccum unit works as an air purifier. The vaccum cleaner filters out dust in the environment and the anti bactrial, allergen removal, purifing unit is in the dock. The dock also acts as a charger for vaccum cleaner.

VC 1 Vaccum cleaner

VC 1 Dock, with charger and air purifier unit

VC 1 is a cyclonic vaccum cleaner which does not have a typical HEPA style filter, instead the cyclonic motion of air creates vortices and seprates out the dust and dirt due to centrifugal force. So even after the dust can is filled up, there will be no loss of suction in the machine. Cleaning the dust can is also easy due to the absence of filter.

Pre-assembled / Standard Components 8. Power circuit, switch & LED unit 9. Motor unit 10. Battery pack

Group Project Duration- 2 weeks Manufacturing and prototyping This project was focused more on manufacturing detail and injection moulding. The idea was to make a box which was equal to or less than 10 cubic inches and it followed all the manufacturing details.

LxWxB- 50x50x64 mm Volume (of material)- 16 cc approx Proposed material- Polyproplene Material used for prototyping- ABS Wall thickness- 2/1.75mm Draft angle- 1째

All Dimensions in mm

This box has a sliding detail for opening and closing. It is done with the help of a snap and an undercut detail on other half. The lower half has a guide to limit the motion and it does not let the upper half to skew.

The final prototype just out of 3D printer and after being cleaned and assembled.

This chair was made in the open elective, Bamboo furniture. The joineries were inspired from the barrel nut and the seating was weaved in cotton rope.

These installations were made for the college fest quasar.
