An investment in this kind of education can be a powerful engine of economic development.” “At Western, we want to produce graduates who will be contributing in more ways than just getting a job and making a good living. PrabhatJha(M.D.,D.Phil.) Scientist

Canada Research Chair in Health and Development 30 Bond Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5B 1W8

Phone: 416 864 6042 Fax: 416 864 5256 Email: prabhat.jha@utoronto.ca Dr. Jha is an internationally recognized scientist who has made invaluable contributions to the fields of epidemiology and economics, helping to shape global health policy over the past decade. Two of his ground-breaking publications on tobacco control policy, led to the first-ever global treaty on tobacco control, now signed by over 160 countries. In addition, he has documented smoking as a major cause of social inequality in mortality. Dr. Jha is currently conducting the world’s largest prospective study of premature mortality called the Million Death Study (MDS), he uses a novel method to ascertain causes of death in over 1 million homes in India from 1997-2014, and estimates the contribution of key risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and the environment. Early findings from the MDS show that smoking kills over 1 million Indians; that HIV causes far fewer deaths (0.1M) than previously believed, but that malaria kills many more people than previously estimated (0.2M); and that practicable interventions can substantially reduce the 2.3 million child deaths in the country. Dr. Jha is a uniquely persuasive figure because he recognized early in his career the need to bridge academic research and public policy. He has been remarkably successful because the scientific evidence produced by his research is not only world-class in quality and publication impact, but is also linked directly to institutions that can put this information into action.
