A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT CATHEDRAL TRUSTEES BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dear Cathedral Family,

Incorporated 1972

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:18-19

Spring/Summer 2016 Volume 47, Issue 1 The Cathedral Highlights is published two times annually by Cathedral High School for alumni, parents, and friends.

It is with a great deal of humility and gratitude that I write this, the first of my writings for the Cathedral community. I am humbled by the many Cathedral folks who have reached out to me so far with great stories and a terrific sense of love and pride for this school community, and grateful for this opportunity to help lead this faith filled community. The prophet Isaiah speaks of deserts and wasteland, which certainly does not apply here, but his point of looking forward is clear. Our recent graduating class exemplifies the best of this beloved place; highachieving, diverse and service-oriented. And while we embrace and laud their accomplishments, I share with you today that even greater days lie ahead for us. Our new strategic plan, nearing its completion, will outline the next five years of our history, which will include our 100th year and much more. As our Board of Directors has decided to keep our school at its current location, we are now able to begin planning the specific details of the plan, which will include upgrades and enhancements to our facilities, the design and development of flexible new learning spaces, and much more. Of course, a new campaign will be developed to fund the plan, and we look forward to you being a part of it. For me as the incoming president, I am ready and energized to lead the way into these next five years, with our faith and Holy Cross values as the guideposts. The Cathedral family is nearly 100 years strong, and the best is yet to come! I look forward to meeting each and every one of you, and to hearing your story, as we move into a very exciting five years. For, as Isaiah said, “Now, it springs up, do you not perceive it?” Faithfully,

Contact Jan Stanich at (317) 968-7352 or jstanich@gocathedral.com ON THE COVER: Cathedral’s sixth president, Rob Bridges, officially takes leadership of the school this month and brings a strong belief in the value of a Catholic education at Cathedral. “We have one chance to raise our kids and…why not do it within the context of our faith, to go out into the world armed with that faith so the young people have a fighting chance. Right now, our children leave our houses, they leave kindergarten, they leave eightgrade, especially they leave high school…and they’re bombarded. “So unless they’re given a great, great, solid core—rituals, habits, deep beliefs that will carry them through that, it’s a risky proposition for kids. I think the odds are greatly maximized if they’re experiencing the gospel message of Jesus every day in all different ways. The Holy Cross tradition and the charism is a great blessing for Cathedral. It gives us a roadmap.” Find out more about President Bridges and his approach to Catholic education at gocathedral.com/president. 4

CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATION BACCALAUREATE REFLECTION BY JACKIE MOONEY, PRESIDENT, CLASS OF 2016 As we have learned from the teachings of Blessed Basile Moreau, “It is not the place that makes people holy, rather it is the people that make the place holy.” In this morning’s reading from 2 Timothy, we heard, “I have competed well—I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” Tomorrow, as we are gathered for our commencement, Cathedral’s Class of 2016 will finish the race. We seem to have given every possible ounce of our love, courage, perseverance, and passion to Cathedral and her people. But we know tomorrow, and next fall, and in ten years, there will be other races, other trials that we must finish well—and we will. We have faith. It is that faith that has helped us throughout our four years at Cathedral. Our legacy will live on in the people whose lives we touched with our humor, our compassion, and our love. We are a class of angels, both heavenly and earthly. Just as we heard in the gospel this morning, we are a class that has followed God’s instructions of loving others as he loves us. Our teachers and fellow students will remember our spirit, a spirit that is not embodied by a stick, but by our acts of kindness. I am proud of our positive impact and I am proud to be a member of the class of 2016. Let’s face it, the world needs our minds, our humor, and most of all, our love. Tomorrow we will finish this race. But it is not our last race or our last step. It’s just our next step together. We are ready. We are ready together. Psalm 73, verse 23 states: “But now I am always with you, for you keep holding my right hand.” As God has held our hands throughout our past four years, he will continue to hold our hands. So, let’s show our solidarity now by holding each other’s hands as God holds ours. Class, please all join hands together. Think back to the first time we held hands, way back to our first freshman year mass where we were oblivious to how close our class would become and

how impactful our loving class would be. Think back to the time we held hands as we danced the freshman welcome dance in front of the whole school as we were welcomed into the Cathedral family. Think back to the time we held hands our sophomore year as we

14

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

“BUT NOW I AM ALWAYS WITH YOU, FOR YOU KEEP HOLDING MY RIGHT HAND.” stormed the field and cheered on our classmates at the Cathedral vs Chatard football game. Think back to holding hands in a circle, releasing balloons, and praying as we honored and mourned the loss of our dearest Tacy. Together we were able to keep our faith during our journey of grieving and healing. Think back to holding hands while celebrating our theatrical performances, academic achievements, musical productions, sporting accomplishments, and countless other successes. We held hands in triumph as we finally won something, for the first and last time, junior year at Irish 500! This year we held onto one another and the sophomore class as we faced another tragedy, the loss of Jen. We did everything we could to help them through a pain we knew so well and shared with them our ways of keeping the faith and spreading our love. Many of us held hands at retreat, retreat closings, retreat prayer services and maybe even at a few retreat parties. Think about all the times we have held hands in this sacred place, in this gym. We hold hands right now, Cathedral class of 2016, and show the power of love and the power of unity. We celebrate as one. We have finished the race. We have kept our faith. Whether we are together or separated by distance. Let us continue to hold each other’s hands, hold each other in our hearts, and hold all of Cathedral’s teachings in our actions through all the races in our lives yet to come.

In 2016, 15 seniors were recognized as valedictorians for their accomplishments both in and out of the classroom, their grade-point averages, and the rigor of classes taken: Jennifer Barrett (Holy Spirit), Christopher Bessler, (St. Malachy), Gabriel DeSanto (St. Simon), Ellen Flood (St. Malachy), Nathan Gray (St. Pius X), Patrick Gresham, Teresa Heckman (St. Simon), MacKenzie Isaac, David Kronenberger (Holy Spirit Geist), Michael Rushka (St. Barnabas), Steven Salvas (St. Matthew), Gates Schneider (St. Malachy), Kathryn Stapleton (St. Matthew), and Julia White (St. Michael).

COMMENCEMENT 2016: Lance Rhodes, social studies teacher, was chosen by the seniors to address the Class of 2016 at this year’s commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 22. This is an excerpt of his remarks. There is good and evil out there and it has many faces. You will have to navigate this world. You will have to maneuver through it without the protection of your parents. There are heroes and villains in this world and they sometimes look the same. I want each of you to be a hero. I know you are not a villain. But I would ask you not to be the vast multitude of people that sit huddled cowering on the sideline while the struggle takes place. I am not suggesting that you have to be a soldier or sailor or a policeman or fireman to be a hero. Certainly those people are. You can be a hero by standing up for what you know to be right. Defend your values and ideals; whatever they are. Take a stand and battle for what is right in the world. Good and bad, right and wrong are not subjective terms or labels as some people would lead us to believe. There are things that all people, cultures and societies know to be wrong and evil. Sometimes bad behavior needs to be confronted and not rationalized, justified, or excused. You can fight for your values in the classroom, on the college campus, the workplace, and the community or wherever they are under siege.

Courage is the great quality that all heroes possess.

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

The 39th annual ShamrAuction, Passport to Island Paradise, raised $682,000 at the February 27 event. The funds raised go directly to the Cathedral Family of Funds to support academic initiatives, arts programs, athletics, technology, professional development for faculty, and for tuition assistance. “We are so blessed to have a community that comes together to support our students and helps us provide the very best high school experience,” says Monica Pollom, director of events and corporate relations. “To fulfill Cathedral’s mission of diversity, the school relies on the ShamrAuction events to be a significant contributor to the $2.6 million we need to raise every year for tuition assistance and merit scholarships to some 44% of our student body.”

CATHEDRAL FUND SEES RECORD $4 MILLION IN DONATIONS Every year, the Cathedral Fund, the school’s annual fundraising initiative, is charged with raising $2.6 million to meet financial needs not covered by tuition. These vital funds are used to help pay teachers’ salaries, update classrooms and facilities, support academic programs, and, in general, provide for the unique value of a Cathedral education. This year, the Cathedral Fund, which consists of year-round fundraising including the student raffle, annual fund contributions, the Cathedral Fund Dinner, and events such as the ShamrAuction, this year far surpassed its goal realizing a record-setting $4,285,669. “We are so grateful—and Cathedral students are so blessed—to be part of a community that truly supports out Holy Cross values, both spiritually and financially,” says Nicole Beasley, vice president for advancement. “Without the support of our alumni, donors, parents, staff and faculty, community business partners, and even the students themselves, Cathedral would not be able to offer all the classroom and co-curricular programs that help make our graduates so well prepared for college and career. “We thank everyone who has had any part in helping the school achieve this milestone and we keep you in our prayers every day,” she says.

NEW WALKWAY CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY When students return to the hill this August, they soon will have use of a brand-new walkway leading from 56th Street to the Welch Activity Center. The walkway, to be named in honor of Jen Maginot, class of 2018, who passed away unexpectedly last school year, will provide safer access for students as well as provide better surfaces for runners and walkers. The project was made possible by this year’s Funda-Need appeal at ShamrAuction 2016 with donors contributing over $100,000 for the construction of ‘Jen’s Way.’

WINTER/SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UPS: BOYS VOLLEYBALL- STATE CHAMPS! The Irish (34-8), after taking over the No. 1 spot in the IBVCA rankings in late April, turned in a memorable, emotional postseason performance. First, the Irish beat No. 6 Noblesville in a four-set quarterfinal – 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-12 – to advance to the final day of the season. They then beat No. 5 Brownsburg 25-12, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12 on Saturday, May 21, to win the state title. That victory capped a heart-stopping day for the Irish, having beaten No. 2 Roncalli 27-25, 20-25, 15-25, 2816, 15-13 in dramatic semifinal earlier in the day. The state title capped a memorable year for Irish volleyball overall, with the Irish girls having won the Indiana High School Activities Association state title and being named national champions by various outlets in the fall. That marked the fourth time the Irish’s boys and girls had won state titles in the same school year. “It’s a nice little bookend,” Head coach Rhonda Low said of the boys title. “The guys kind of put pressure on themselves. This is the fourth time we’ve had the bookends. To be able to pull this off … the guys are very proud. The school’s proud of them. They’re really excited that the hard work paid off.” The Irish boy’s 2015-2016 performance was keyed by a seven-member senior class, a group that included three players playing varsity volleyball for the first time. The seven seniors: *Middle Spencer Smith, the line Division I boys volleyball player in Indiana this past season. He will play collegiately at Ball State to become the fifth Irish boys volleyball player to play at the school *Setter Aaron Burrell . *Right-side/outside Dan Laskowski *Outside hitter Ian Smith. *Middle hitter Ryan Lane *Opposite Cole Kaiser *Setter Michael Kluger

WINTER/SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UPS: ROYAL IRISH RUGBY (RIR) - STATE CHAMPS!

BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING

The 2015-2016 season indeed was a very good one. And that’s how it should be remembered.

Cathedral’s boys finished eighth in the sectional meet with 151 points. The Irish were a slew of season- and personal-best finishes for the nine-swimmer team that participated in the postseason.

The RIR–made up mostly of players from Cathedral and Bishop Chatard High Schools–lost the national title game to Sacramento (Cal.) Granite Bay, 14-8, on May 21. That capped a grueling week of nationaltournament games played in soggy, rainy conditions. RIR beat Granite Bay for the 2015 national title after winning national titles in 2014 and 2012. RIR returned to Indiana following the national-title loss to finish its season, doing so on a high note with back-to-back victories in the semifinals and finals of the state tournament May 28-30.That included a 23-19 victory over Penn to clinch the state title for the program. That victory came on Memorial Day afternoon at Cyntheanne Park in Fishers. RIR had beaten Brownsburg in the semifinal, 3823, on May 28. The junior varsity also won the state tournament, also beating Penn for the state title. RIR’s only losses this past season came to Granite Bay in the national title game and narrow in-season losses to national single-school champion Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga and Penn. RIR finished the season 18-3.

BOYS BASKETBALL The Irish, one of Indiana’s top programs for the past several seasons, held that status again in ’15’16, finishing 17-6 and ranked 14th in Class 4A in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll. The team played in one of the most-competitive sections in Indiana high school basketball history, a section that included five teams that finished the season ranked 13th or better in Class 4A: No. 4 North Central, No. 6 Lawrence North, No. 8 Lawrence Central, No. 13 Arsenal Tech and Cathedral. The Irish, after winning their final seven games of the regular season and 14 of their last 16, lost to North Central 58-54 in the first round of the Class 4A, Section 10 Tournament at Arsenal Tech. The Irish fell behind 13-0 early to North Central before rallying to lead in the fourth quarter. The game was tied 54-54 before North Central secured the victory.

BOYS AND GIRLS BOWLING The boys finished fifth in conference regular-season play with a 5-5 record, then finished third in the sectional in early February. The boys also qualified two bowlers individually into the regional round. Junior Sam Vielee and junior Jason Lavelle both qualified for the regional, with Vielee bowling a 606 at Woodlawn in the event to advance, and Lavelle advancing with a 600 in the event. Vielee moved onto the semistate at Anderson with a 543 series at the regional tournament at the Rose Bowl. After finishing fifth in the conference during the regular season and fifth in the sectional last season, the girls team finished fourth in the sectional in 2016. The girls were led by junior Meghan Lee (125 average for the season), senior captain Victoria Fagg (113 average).

CHEERLEADING The Irish placed second in the Miami Valley Regional, then placed eighth in the prestigious Bluegrass Regional. They then followed those performances and capped the season with a fifth-place finish among 44 teams at the National High School Cheer Championships in Orlando, Florida, in February. The Irish clinched their fifth-place finish with one of their best performances of the season: a rare “zerodeduction” performance in the finals at nationals. That group included a 16-member team that featured four seniors–Lily Lusk, Olivia Sanders, Lydia Champion and Sara Schwer–who were key to the team’s success. The team also featured six juniors and two sophomores who made the performing team, with the team featuring a total of 12 underclassmen: Joanie Stephens, Abby Bailey, Nicole Cerar, Rebecca Derringer, Macie Lucia, Brooke Broecker, Myra Miller, Lauren Kaplan, Katie Garcia (alternate), Samantha Speckman (alternate) and McKenna Wylam (alternate).

WINTER/SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UPS: GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING

GIRLS TRACK

The Irish finished the sectional with 216 points, finishing behind perennial power and sectional champion North Central (524), Lawrence North (361.5) and Franklin Central (349.5). That was a solid performance in a deep, consistently strong sectional, and the Irish also won the Indianapolis City Meet, the Warren Invitational and the Schools With No Pools Meet. The Irish won the 200 medley and freestyle relays at city, with sophomore Annie Klein repeating as 200-yard freestyle champion, sophomore Lauren Burgett winning the 500-yard freestyle and junior Abbie Heinzmann repeating as champion in the 100-yard

The 2016 was a season will long will be remembered– for what it meant for the future but primarily because of the accomplishments of a talented senior class that will rank among the most successful in program history. The senior-laden Lady Irish team qualified four athletes for five events at the Indiana High School Athletic Association state meet, with two of those seniors–Cienna Jordan and Katherine Free – combining for 11 points at the state meet.

The goal this offseason is to add a diving coach, and develop a diving program to go with the improving swimming program.

BOYS TRACK The Irish this past season finished second at the City Meet to a veteran-heavy Bishop Chatard team, finishing in tie for third at the All-Catholic Meet and winning the junior varsity City Meet. The Irish not only finished third in the North Central Sectional, they finished sixth at the regional with junior Zavier Brown, senior Austin Mason and junior James Smith qualifying for the state meet. Mason finished fifth in the state meet in the 400-meter dash in 49.31 seconds his final high school meet and Smith finished 11th at the state meet in the discus with a 156-09. Mason was competing in track for the first time.

WRESTLING The Irish finished third in the state with 77 points behind state champion Warren Central (105 points) and runner-up Brownsburg (83). The Irish finished second in the state in 2014 and won the state title in 2013. The Irish turned in that third-place showing by qualifying six wrestlers for the state meet: freshmen Lukas Walendzak and Jordan Slivka, juniors Breyden Bailey and Ben Stewart, and seniors Blake Rypel and Ryan Guhl. Rypel repeated as state champion, and Guhl turned in one the Irish’s biggest moments of the season by upsetting a defending state champion. Rypel, who will attend Indiana University, was one of nine Indiana high school wrestlers to finish as undefeated state champions in 2016. 28

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

That was good for a 20th-place team finish at the state meet in Bloomington June 3, with seniors Ellen Flood (3,200 meters) and Princess Brinkley (discus) also qualifying for the state meet. Jordan finished fourth in the long jump at the state meet with a jump of 18-04.75 and 15th in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.40. Free finished fifth at the state meet in the 1,600-meter run in 4:57.45, and Flood finished 21st in the 3,200 in 11:26:46. Brinkley finished 14th in the discus with a throw of 113-11. It was Jordan’s first time qualifying for the state meet in the hurdles and the third time qualifying in the long jump. Her jump at the state meet set a Cathedral school record. Jordan–who will participate in track and field at Washington University in St. Louis and likely compete in the heptathlon–also set the Cathedral record in the 100 with a time of 14.8. Free, who will attend Indiana University, set school records in the 1,600, 3,200 and cross-country during her four-year career. Free advanced to the state by winning the 1,600 in 5:08.82 at the Ben Davis Girls Regional on May 24, an event in which she also finished second in the 3,200 in 11:30.89.

GIRLS BASKETBALL The Irish, after a 17-9 season in 2014-2015, finished the 2015-2016 season with a 16-9 record, losing to Lawrence North by a score of 80-51 in the Class 4A, Section 10 tournament championship game at North Central High School. The Irish started the ’15-16 season 2-7 against one of the state’s toughest early schedules, then won 14 of their last 16 games. That run included three victories en route to title at the Twin Lakes Holiday Tournament and a runner-up finish in the Indianapolis City Tournament.

WINTER/SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UPS: BOYS LACROSSE - STATE CHAMPS!

BOYS GOLF

Cathedral High School capped a dominant 2016 season with a dominant final game, beating perennial power and two-time defending state champion Carmel, 9-4, in the Indiana High School Lacrosse Association boys state championship game Saturday, June 4, at Fishers High School.

The Irish in 2016 won four tournaments as a team, including the City Tournament and the Sectional Tournament. They also won invitational tournaments at North Central and Angola, and had a sophomore named to the All-State team.

The Irish had finished as the state runners-up the past two seasons, losing to Carmel in the final game both seasons. The programs have met in the state finals six consecutive seasons. The Irish held Carmel to one goal in the second half of the title game, with senior All-State goaltender Tucker Senefeld rebounding from a difficult semifinal to close out his career with a standout performance. The Greyhounds’ lone goal of the second half came late in the half with the outcome decided. Senior midfielder Luke Dennen scored two first-half goals and finished with a hat trick as the Irish pulled away in the second half. Dennen, who will play lacrosse at the U.S. Naval Academy, played extensive minutes in the final two games because of injuries at the midfield position.

GIRLS LACROSSE The Irish, after establishing themselves as one of the elite programs in Indiana with a 2015 state title, maintained that status in 2016, spending the season ranked among the state’s best teams before losing the Indiana Girls Lacrosse Association state title game. The Irish lost to Hamilton Southeastern/ Fishers, 12-11, in double overtime in the title game played at Heritage Christian on June 4. “It was an amazing year,” first-year Irish girls lacrosse coach Adrianne Wagner said. “To have the season we had, and to be state runners-up … you can’t write it any better except by winning.” Senior Kelly Donnelly, a Notre Dame commitment who Wagner said helped put Indiana high school lacrosse “on the [national] map,” led the Irish with 78 goals and 99 points entering state finals weekend, with sophomore and University of Colorado-Boulder commitment Kate Burnside adding 51 goals and 69 points. Senior Grace Gregor added 24 goals and 28 points, with senior Kate Flynn adding 17 goals and 27 points. Sophomore Megan Mattei added 12 goals with 15 points. Senior goaltender Molly Mitchell, an AllState selection, had 107 saves and a save percentage of 57.4 percent.

A solid regular season stayed that way in the postseason, with the Irish winning two important tournaments over favored Bishop Chatard. The Irish as a team shot 326 in the sectional at Maple Creek – a tournament hosted by Cathedral. That was good for a two-stroke victory over Chatard, a team the Irish also beat by two strokes to win the City Tournament. The Irish then finished 11th at the Muncie Central Regional at The Players Club in Muncie with a score of 326, 20 strokes behind champion Chatard. Irish sophomore Austin Vukovits won the sectional with an 18-hole score of 74, three shots ahead of runner-up and Irish senior Nolan Lissman. Vukovits and Lissman had tied for individual-championship honors at the city tournament, with Lissman winning the title on the second playoff hole. Vukovits was the North Central and Angola individual titles in addition to winning the sectional tournament. Vukovits was named All-State, missing qualifying for the state tournament on an individual basis when he finished third in a three-man playoff at the regional. The playoff was to decide which of the three golfers went to the state finals. One outstanding story of the season was that of senior David Carr, who was cut from the team as a freshman before finishing with the 18th best scoring average out of 18 players as a sophomore. He contributed as a junior then played varsity throughout his senior season. Carr was one of 15 players in the state named Academic All-State in 2016. Vukovits played No. 1 for the Irish throughout the season and finished with a 37.9-stroke, nine-hole average, and Lissman – who Fagan said “played great for us all year” – finished with a 39.5 stroke average. Irish sophomore Danny Paris averaged 40.8, with Carr averaging 42.75 and junior Jeremy Wigham averaged 44.3. Lismann was an honorable mention All-Academic All-State.

WINTER/SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UPS: GIRLS TENNIS - STATE CHAMPS! Cathedral High School dominated 2016 Indiana high school girls tennis. That was the case from a team perspective, and it turned out to be true from an individual perspective, too. Sisters Maeve, Grace and Claire Kocielski keyed a dramatic Cathedral run through the Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament, winning the state title with a 3-2 victory over South Bend St. Joseph at the Indianapolis Racquet Club-Dean on June 4. Maeve Kocielski followed the team state title with a dominant performance in winning the individual title. The Kocielskis, playing Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles, respectively, went a combined 86-0 in 2016, with Maeve finishing 31-0, Grace finishing 27-0 and Claire finishing 28-0. Maeve followed the team state title by winning the individual state title the following weekend. She did not lose a set in three matches during state finals weekend, capping the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Lauren Marx of Evansville Mater Dei in the state-title match. The Irish as a team had entered the postseason ranked No. 3 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association final poll. The state team title was the second for the Lady Irish, who won the title with a 26-0 record in 1986. The Irish were the state runners-up in 2011-2012. Grace will attend Ball State next season. Maeve is a sophomore and Claire is a freshman. The trio’s mother, Amy, played on the Irish’s 1986 state champions. The girls’ father – Paul – played for the University of Texas. Senior Meghan Farrell and sophomore Rachel Long finished the season at No. 1 doubles for the Irish, with junior Kristin Caldwell and sophomore KK Combs playing No. 2 doubles.

The Irish’s run to the state tournament was as difficult as possible, and featured dramatic victories over the state’s most traditional, successful programs. The Irish, who finished the season 21-1, had to beat not only No. 1-ranked North Central in an emotional, memorable match that set the tone for a deep postseason run, they also had to beat No. 2.-ranked Carmel in the state quarterfinals. Carmel had won the last three consecutive state titles. The Irish beat the Greyhounds twice this season, including once in the regular season. The Irish beat North Central 3-2 in the sectional final at North Central on Thursday, May 19. The Irish had beaten Broad Ripple, 5-0, in the first round of the sectional. In perhaps the key match of the Indiana girls high school tennis postseason Maeve Kocielski beat North Central’s No. 1 – senior and Nebraska-signee Claire Reifeis – 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to clinch the Irish’s victory. The Irish then beat Hamilton Southeastern 4-1 and Lawrence North 4-1 before beating 18-1 Delta 3-2 in the finals of the semi-state round. The state quarterfinal victory over Carmel was equally dramatic, with Grace Koscieslski beating Zoe Woods of Carmel 6-2, 7-6 to clinch the victory. Maeve and Claire won their matches against Carmel by scores of 6-4, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. Maeve Koscielski beat St. Joseph sophomore Maddie Yergler 6-0, 6-0, in the state final with Grace Koscielski beating senior Mary Mullaney 6-3, 6-0 and Claire Koscielski beating Maria Anthony 6-2, 6-2. The Irish had beaten No. 8 Terre Haute South in the semifinal the morning before the final, with both the semifinal and final matches moved inside to the Dean facility because of rain. The Irish’s lone loss in 2016 came 3-2 to Zionsville in a match Grace Kocielski missed because of illness.

IRISH ATHLETICS

WINTER/SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UPS: SOFTBALL The Irish (18-15) played against yet another difficult state-level schedule, rolling through the Class 4A, Section 10 tournament at Warren Central by beating Arsenal Tech 13-0 and Lawrence Central 7-1 before beating Mount Vernon 10-0 for the sectional championship. The Irish then beat Pendleton Heights, 2-1, at Pendleton Heights for the regional title before a 12-3 loss to Franklin Central in the semifinal of the semistate round at Center Grove on June 4. The semistate appearance made the Irish one of the last eight teams remaining in the Class 4A state tournament in 2016. It also raised the standard for the program moving forward. The Irish last won a regional title in 2003. This year’s regional title was the third in program history, with the Irish also winning the regional in 2001. It was the Irish’s first sectional title since 2014 and second since 2011. The Irish have won 16 sectional titles. The Irish in 2016 also won the City Championship, beating Scecina in the title game after losing to Scecina during the regular season. The Irish were led by an experienced, veteran senior class – and a potent offense. Senior catcher Janae Hogg hit .494 for the Irish through 30 games with eight home runs, and senior shortstop Mallory Kimmell hit .482 through 30 games. Senior pitcher Alex Jackson went 12-9 with two saves and six complete games through the sectional tournament and sophomore pitcher/first baseman Brittany Ford ranked among Indiana leaders with 48 runs batted in. Other seniors included catcher Rachel McCluskey, third baseman Rose Holtrey, centerfielder Valerie Moore, outfielder/first baseman Grace McNulty and right-fielder Lily Lusk. Matthews said Moore’s defense in centerfield was critical this season, adding that Lusk’s speed was key, too. Holtrey played solid third base and hit No. 5. Underclassmen included junior shortstop Brooke Broecker, junior second baseman/shortstop Olivia Jackson, junior outfielder/first baseman Megan Wolcott, junior third baseman Meghan Lee, sophomore leftfielder/second baseman Jordan Lyman, sophomore outfielder Brittney Levingston, sophomore outfielder Liz Spiech, freshman outfielder Lily Jennings and freshman catcher Katie Carr.

October 6 CATHEDRAL FUND DINNER

Tom credits Cathedral and Coach Noe for shaping him into the person he is today, saying, “As a proud Cathedral alumni, I can truly say all of my experiences as a student and tennis team member helped shape the person I am today. Cathedral has an amazing academic staff which helps to prepare its students for college, and life beyond college. I am humbled to have been a small part of the Cathedral tennis program, and owe a large portion of my success to my coach/mentor Mark Noe. Coach Noe has great passion for the game, but most importantly, he invests in his players/teams and puts personal growth ahead of all else. Congratulations to Coach Noe and the Women’s Tennis Team on their recent State Championship! Being that tennis does not have a class system, it is a very difficult and impressive accomplishment that should not be minimized!”
