elcome to Lennox. If you are looking for a new home or are just visiting we hope you like it here. Lennox, like many small towns, is proud to show you what a lot of volunteers of all ages working together can accomplish. The Municipal Band is a group of volunteer musicians from Lennox and the surrounding area who get together to entertain at the park every Thursday night during the summer as well as at area fairs. The Ambulance squad has a mix of full time and volunteer members who work together with our volunteer Fire Department to take care of emergency needs for Lennox and the surrounding area. The Garden Club has been together for many years and takes care of the flowers at the park. It is a big job so they are always looking for new members if you have a green thumb. The beautiful flowers are just one of the reasons that we are proud of our park. One doesn’t need to look too far to see the ongoing improvements in the park. Ball games for all ages have begun with many volunteer coaches involved. The swimming pool has been sand blasted and painted for the swimming season. Plan to be here for our Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration. The Commercial Club spends many hours planning activities for the day. Starting with Cruise Night on July 2nd, activities on the Fourth include a road race, parade, arts in the park, softball and baseball games, band concert and fireworks. Come early and plan on spending the day. You will be glad you did. Walking downtown one can see continued work inside and out to improve our small town. We appreciate the efforts of all our volunteers, citizens and businesses who are working together to make our community one that we can be proud of and you will want to call home.

Lennox had its beginning with the establishment of the Milwaukee railroad branch through the area in 1879. Settlement in the Lennox territory gained momentum during the decade of the 1870’s. Lennox was named after B. G. Lennox, private secretary to S.S. Merrill, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific railroad executive. In its early years it was known as Ben Lennox, although it was shortened a short time later.

The City’s rich history is preserved through the effort of the Lennox Area Historical Society and shared with the public through the Lennox Museum. Located at 305 South Main Street, the three story brick building houses many artifacts, articles, and items donated by local residents that have relevance to the Lennox area. The LAHS opens the Museum for tours upon requests. Phone numbers are posted on the museum door. They are also open every second Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no charge but donations are always welcome.

Lennox is located on South Dakota Highways 17 & 44; five miles off Interstate 29 and 25 miles off Interstate 90. The City is located in Lincoln County, one of the fastest growing counties in the State. Lennox City Hall is located at 107 S Main Street. they are open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Lennox has a seven member council consisting of the Mayor and two representatives from each of three

takes branches, grass clippings, garden waste and leaves each Saturday during the season from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents in Lennox are also asked to license their pets. Tags are available at the City Finance Office and expire on Dec. 31 of each year. Animals must be current on rabies vaccination.

First Responders SERVE & PROTECT Volunteers are the backbone of emergency services in Lennox. The members of the Lennox Area Ambulance and the Fire Department are proud to provide quality emergency services to the citizens of Lennox and the surrounding communities. With updated equipment and top-notch personnel, both departments are well-prepared for emergencies.
The City of Lennox is under police protection 24/7. The Lennox Police Department is located at 120 West 2nd Avenue and currently consists of four full time officers and one part time officer. COMMUNITY LIBRARY
The Lennox Community Library is a beautiful building located at 208 West 5th Ave. The library is a joint venture with the Lennox elementary/Intermediate Library. The public entrance is located on the west side of the building with parking available.
The library offers books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, a separate adult reading area and computers with internet access. A library card is free to residents in Lennox, Chancellor and Worthing. During the summer, children can participate in the summer reading program. Throughout the year, children can also enjoy Storytime with special guest readers and crafts. Also throughout the year, adults are given the opportunity to participate in monthly book discussions.

The City of Lennox takes great pride in its park system. The parks offer activities and relaxation for people of all ages. Located on South Main, Westerman Park features a swimming pool, wading pool, playground, picnic shelters, baseball and softball diamonds, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a basketball court, a skate park, a bandshell, flower gardens, camping pads and a sand volleyball court. Located on west Fourth Avenue, West Evergreen Park has playground equipment and a shelter. During the winter months, an ice skating rink is featured at the park if weather permits. Shelters at both parks are available for family reunions, birthday parties and summer picnics. Call City Hall to reserve. Lennox takes great pride in the Lennox Municipal Band that performs free concerts every Thursday night (8 p.m.) during the summer season at Jacobs Memorial Bandshell, also located at Westerman Park on Park Drive. OPPORTUNITIES
Campsites can be rented for $11 a night at Westerman Park with the seventh consecutive night free. All campsites are electrical and a restroom/shower facility is available. A dump station is located at the park and can be used for $5. The camping area opens in the spring and closes in the fall as weather permits. All campsites are first-come, first-served and reservations are accepted beginning January 2 for all arrival dates during the upcoming season. Sites cannot be held until payment is received. Reservations may be made through the City Office (605) 647-2286.
Campsites must be re-registered or vacated by 4 p.m. Between May 1 and September 30, the parks close from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Quiet hours also follow these times. Please consider others in the park at all times. Disturbances caused by loud music or disorderly conduct can lead to expulsion from the park. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet. Pets (except service animals) are not allowed in swimming pool or in any park buildings. Owners must clean up after their pets. The speed limit in the park and recreation area is 10 miles per hour. Please be cautious in campgrounds and other busy areas. Be especially alert for children. Campfires are allowed only at designated campsites and in approved fireplaces, LENNOX

LENNOX BALL DIAMONDS, PARK & RECREATION Lennox has a rich history in baseball, its origin began in the decade of the 1880’s and has since figured prominently in the community. The Lennox Baseball Association, comprised of local volunteers, was largely responsible for upgrading the baseball diamond, making it a quality field that draws local teams and state tournaments, and making extensive improvements on the softball fields. Members of Lennox’s Park and Rec Board are committed to providing ball opportunities for all of the community’s youth. Westerman Park’s large baseball diamond hosts high school, Lennox Amateurs, Lennox Legion and Teener games. Youth teams and church league utilize the softball diamonds. Young up-andcoming players use the T-ball field on 7th Ave. and Blaine.

Senior LIFE
The Lennox Senior Citizen Center is a very busy place.
The Center is located at 519 South Main Street. This very active group of people in the community enjoy fellowship, daily noon meals, special programs and fundraisers throughout the year. Daily noon meals are served Monday through Friday. Meals on Wheels provides meals to the homebound and to seniors in Chancellor and Parker. The menu is printed each week in The Lennox Independent, courtesy of Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Residents can call 647-2435 to reserve a spot for the noon meal or to request meal delivery. Seniors enjoy playing Wii bowling, taking trips, playing cards and bingo, exercising and taking part in computer classes and special programs. Barb Pederson is the Activities Director. Birthday parties are held the first Tuesday of the month. Various fundraisers during the year help support the center. The Spec N Dicken supper in January and the Turkey Dinner in November, sponsored by Life Enrichment for the Elderly (L.E.E.), are two of the most popular. The senior citizens sell lunch and pie

Lennox School District #41-4 serves students from the communities of Lennox, Chancellor, Worthing, and rural areas in Lincoln, Minnehaha, and Turner Counties. The District Administration Office is located in Lennox along with Lennox High School, LWC Junior High School, LWC Intermediate School and Lennox Elementary. One other PK-4 elementary school is located in Worthing. Lennox School District 41-4 is a school system in which the school, parents, and community work collaboratively to form a strong support mechanism which is accountable for educational achievement. The District is AdvancEd accredited K-12. The District has a 7-member Board of Education that meets the second Monday of the month. Besides offering quality academic programs, the Lennox School District has excellent extracurricular offerings. Students have consistently had strong showings in sports, drama, vocal music, band, FFA and debate.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS Lennox is home to a large variety of active and vibrant community clubs and organizations. There are plenty of opportunities for residents as the clubs are always looking for new members and volunteers.
LENNOX AREA COMMUNITY FUND
Since it’s inception in June of 2004, LACF has received nearly $200,000 in donations to the fund. LACF has donated thousands of dollars back to the communities of Chancellor, Worthing, and Lennox through grants. Grants are awarded annually based on applications submitted by the August 1st deadline. VoterREGISTRATION Registering to vote is easy. A simple form is available at City Hall. You can fill out the form and leave it at City Hall or return it to our drop box after hours. The form is then mailed to the Lincoln County Auditor in Canton. You should receive notice from the county within 15 days that your registration has been received. The City of Lennox is divided into three voting wards designated Wards One, Two and Three. Each ward elects two aldermen to serve a term of two years on the common council. The mayor is elected at large and serves a term of two years.
If you move within the city, your voting precinct could change and you must update your information to be eligible to vote in the next election. The deadline for registering to vote is 15 days prior to any election. Your registration must be received by the county auditor before the deadline in order to participate in the next election.
WARD ONE: portion of the incorporated city limits east of a line passing along the center of Main Street. North to Rummel Street then East to Cherry Street and then North to City limits. CHANCELLOR Chancellor, SD is located in Turner County just six miles from Lennox. They are a part of the Lennox School District. The town was named after Chancellor Van Bismark of Germany in 1894. Businesses in Chancellor include a bank, a fertilizer business, a convenience store and gas station, a repair shop, an insurance agency, a post office, and beauty shops. Chancellor also has an active American Legion, Bertus Jurgens Post #283. A Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 2007 honoring area veterans who paid the ultimate price.
The Memorial is located on the east side of Main Street. Chancellor also has a strong Volunteer Fire Department that serves Chancellor and the surrounding area. POET Biorefining-Chancellor is

an Ethanol plant that is located right outside of town. The plant utilizes over 35 million bushels of locally grown corn and processes it into 110 million gallons of ethanol on an annual basis.
The City of Worthing, located nine miles from Lennox, is also a part of the Lennox School District. An Elementary school is located in town. Worthing was named Worthington after a Milwakee Road railroad conductor, the name was shortened to Worthing.
Worthing has a progressive community governed by a Mayor and four commissioners. Worthing has an active Volunteer Fire Department. They provide coverage for the city as well as the townships of Grant, LaValley, Lincoln, and Lynn. Worthing is also home to the Olde Towne Dinner Theatre. It was established in 1982 and offers fabulous meals with memorable performances throughout the year. It is located at 121 South Main Street. The LifeLight Musical Festival also takes place near Worthing every year during Labor Day weekend (47468 280th Street). This is the largest free Christian music festival in the nation.
