A word from the Chief The clocks have gone forward and the days are getting longer.

There’s nothing like a bit of sunshine to make you feel a little bit brighter but sometimes it takes more than that, particularly if you’ve been through traumatic or stressful experiences as many of you have. This issue we take a look at wellbeing and some of the everyday things you can do to keep yourself well.

Different things work for different people and sometimes it can take a while to work out the best things for you. A good place to start is changing how you think about things, be kind to yourself and look for the positives have a read through the resilience tips from Off the Record Bristol’s Resilience Lab on p.16. We offer loads of activities at Independent People that will help you look after your physical and mental health, why not give them a go? To give you a taster of the things we have on offer, we hear from young people who have taken part in our Sporting Chance football (p.14) and RenewALL upcycling sessions (p.18). Getting crafty can be a great way to put a spring in your step (see what we did there?), check out the origami frogs on p.14.

We also hear from VIP volunteer Jenny about how volunteering with 1625ip has helped her develop skills and learn new things on p.4.

Someone who’s been where you are and understands what it’s like? Our peer supporters are there to do just that find out more from Peer Supporter Ryan on p.6.

Volunteer at Independent People

What do you enjoy about volunteering?

I enjoy volunteering because it gives me something to put on my CV while I haven’t got a job. It gives me a chance to give something back to a charity that helped me through a tough part of my life. Finally, as well as all that, it’s a chance to learn new stuff.

What sort of things have you got involved with as a volunteer?

I started off doing events like the Dragon Boat Race and helping out on interview panels, then built my confidence up to do Youth Board where I helped design flyers for the winter social and some feel good tips. I also helped out at Sleepout to help fundraise. Then I started doing training as a receptionist and event planning.

What made you want to volunteer?

1625ip helped me through a tough patch in my life and I wanted to give something back.

What sort of things have you learnt?

I have learnt interviewing skills, gained confidence and admin skills like answering phones, filing and greeting people at the door as well as improving my IT skills.

What do you want to do in the future?

In the future I want to work with children, people with mental health issues, support work or with young people.

Would you recommend being a VIP to others?

I would as the staff treat you well and the skills you learn you can use in your everyday life.

When we asked asked our Youth Board, made up

of current and ex-service users, how we could develop the support we offer Peer Support was one of their priorities. So we developed a Peer Support scheme, with Learning Partnership West (LPW) as part of Bristol Youth Links.

Peer supporters are young people who volunteer to give other young people a little extra support.

We chatted to peer supporter Ryan to find out why he got involved and the kinds of things peer supporters can help with...

What made you want to be a peer supporter?

“I spoke to someone who was already a peer supporter, who suggested I come along to training as I’d really like it. I was going to Brunch Club, helping to set up and engaging with the other young people, but not in a support role at that point as I was still a resident myself. Living at St George’s House, I saw all different types of young people coming in. I’d see a young person sat on their own in a corner and welcome them into the group.”

What kind of things can a peer supporter help with?

We’re like the bridge that joins it all up.

We can share our own experiences, and how we resolved problems. We also run Brunch Club at St George’s House and the Foyer. There’s no staff - it’s a chance for all the residents to come together as a group, like a family, and get along.”

What next?

“We’re like the bridge that joins it all up.”

“There’s loads of reasons someone might need a little extra help. It could be that they don’t know Bristol very well, or they don’t know the language, how to cook, the things that you need to get by day-to-day.

Young people should have the same opportunities no matter what, despite language, race, colour, or if they’re gay, lesbian or transgender. For some of us, we’ve been where you are - we know the score and we can either help you ourselves or point you in the direction of someone who can.

As if a free room makeover wasn’t enough, we have been offering a prize of £100 worth of DIY vouchers to the young person who has created the best room makeover with the help of their professional designer.

The winners of the first round of the competition were announced at our Cash Pointers event in January.

Redecorating can seem a bit daunting when you think about how much it costs. That’s where the Cash Pointers team come in....

Through the Room Make Over project, you get a small budget and the help of a freelance designer to help you design a room, source free items, upcycle old furniture, make curtains and cushions and decorate and dress the room.

After: “The room had no life before. I needed somewhere to feel at home and I needed motivation. I enjoyed upcycling what I had already and it was nice to see all the cushions come together.

I now know you don’t need to spend a lot of money to make a place nice.”

Hannah’s TRICKS OF THE TRADE One of our designers is Hannah Redden, a Bristol based Textile Artist and Interior Designer. Here she explains how you can create your perfect space for virtually no money!

“I’ve been working for the Cash Pointers project at 1625ip for over six months now and I have been able to help four young people create their desired rooms on a budget of just £50 per person. £50! I hear you say, YES it can be done!

Decorating on a budget doesn’t mean that you have to forget your ideas of your dream room.

It’s all about changing your way of thinking Rather than rushing out to buy something new every time you want to revamp a room, it’s about learning to work with what you’ve got or think what you can get for a fraction of the price.

Simple, stylish updates that anyone can have a go at make a big difference. Paint, wallpaper and fabric are key to unlocking a new look. There are many websites out there that will give you free samples of fabric and wallpaper that could be framed and used to create a feature wall.

If you are clever with your money and spend time sourcing items, you can do it!

One young person managed to get fabric table runners from Ikea for 50p each which we then transformed into cushion covers for her existing sofa, revamping the feel of the whole room.

If you hate a piece of furniture but don’t want to pay to replace it, you can hide it by painting it the same colour as the walls of your house. Tester pots of paint may not cover a wall, but there is enough in those little bottles to paint old picture frames and hang them together on what was an empty wall.

A little bit of vision There is potential in everything you own, that nondescript kitchen dresser that suddenly takes centre stage once you wallpaper the inside with a vibrant print, those plain Ikea drawers that are instantly updated when you replace the handles with mismatched vintage ones, even those plain pine draws that could stand out after being given a lick of something colourful.

And for people who are still not sure it’s worth it, you can easily make simple changes first and see what a difference it makes.

Change the focus of the living room from the TV to the fireplace; or face a sofa and chairs towards each other for a more sociable set-up. Once you have done this you will see that it really is worth moving on to the bigger stuff. Don’t be afraid to have a go – you can always change things again if you don’t like them.

The DOs, DON’Ts and I DON’T KNOWs of Private Renting Finding a home, talking to landlords and figuring out how to rent from a private landlord can seem like a minefield.

1625ip’s Allocations and Advice Worker Hana has some tips...

Finding that perfect pad is often all about getting noticed and convincing landlords that you’re the best person to rent to.

There are loads of ways that you can improve your chances, for example…

• Dust off that suit and tie - looking responsible can make a real difference.

• Well written emails or being polite and professional over the phone can really help you stand out from the crowd.

• Grab a folder, chuck in any certificates, a CV and letters of support (maybe from work, college or your support worker) Then show it to the landlord, that way they can view you in your best light.

• Check out our new Move on Training for all you need to know about finding and keeping your perfect pad.

• Be on time! All too often people miss out on great opportunities because they didn’t get there on time.

The private rented sector is competitive so don’t forget to set that alarm on your phone!

Independent landlords are great because they don’t charge agency fees. It can be easier to find a pad through an agency, just a bit more pricey and they often run credit checks which can make the whole thing more difficult.

Viewing should be free.

Look out for scams, remember all viewings should be free so beware if you’re asked for anything up front.

Sharing is the way to go!

Ask your mates, sharing is way cheaper and loads more fun.

Check out social media and shop windows for landlords and house shares, the more places you look, the better your chances.

Deposits All landlords will ask for a deposit, usually one month’s rent, it’s basically to make sure they are not out of pocket if something is damaged or you owe rent. You should get it back when you move out as long as there is no damage or rent owing.

IMPORTANT All deposits must be put in a protected independent deposit scheme, if you’re worried, call Shelter for advice on 0808 800 4444.

One month’s rent in advance Most landlords ask for a month’s rent to be paid before you move in. This can get tricky if you’re claiming housing benefit so make sure you keep your landlord in the loop or save up extra cash before starting a tenancy.

HELP If you can’t afford to pay your rent you could be eligible for Local Housing Allowance. This could be up to £290 for a room in a shared house, or in some circumstances a bit more.

Bristol Credit Union are really great too, they can offer you low interest loans and help you save up.

Bristol City Council Private Renting Team can sometimes help with paying a deposit, to find out more pop into the office to see us.

The lovely people at Vegfest Bristol have donated two weekend tickets so you’re in with a chance to win! Vegfest takes place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May at the Amphitheatre in Bristol’s Harbourside. Foodcycle Bristol are a group of volunteers who

collect surplus food from places like supermarkets and make sure it goes to good use.

They can be found every Saturday 2.30pm at Barton Hill Settlement cooking up a hearty meal to share with the local community. It’s a great chance to get a good feed and meet some new people.

The right foot

1625ip’s football team has been going from strength to strength this year. The team meet every week on Friday afternoons at Easton Leisure Centre 3pm-4.30pm.

Regular player Scott tells us what it’s like...

So you’ve been attending the football with 1625ip at Easton Leisure Centre.

How’re you finding it?

Very entertaining and it seems to help some people overcome shyness they may have trouble with.

What happens in a session?

Once a few people turn up we drift into a gentle warm up game to get things started.

What’s the group like?

The group are a good bunch of lads, of which some are very keen and recognised faces.

Numbers are improving every week.

Benefits?

Yes, many benefits such as making new friends, having a good time, also keeping yourself occupied.

What do you think about young people’s fitness levels in general?

The fitness levels are not the best (but not bad!). Our fitness levels are improving every week.

Do you have any ideas on how the football sessions can evolve? And how do you see your role in that?

I’ve spoken to a few people, mainly Duane (who organises the sessions), and had a discussion with head office and aim to move towards a coaching role/ manager player after entering an assigned team into a league.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are simply to get everyone in the sessions fit and occupied, have some fun, and continue to make new friends. I also looked to try out some new training techniques and explore the ins and outs of football and the many ways to progress in the beautiful game.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about coming along but needs some extra encouragement?

Why don’t you come try out for football? It’s a good laugh and always a good way to let off steam.

As the chosen charity for the Varsity series between University of the West of England and Bristol University, 1625ip was invited to enter our football team in a fundraising friendly fusball tournament before the main series kicked off.

They played against teams of students from both universities, giving them a chance to put their skills to the test outside of training sessions.

Off the Record’s Resilience Lab is all about learning how to deal with what life throws at you.

But what exactly is resilience?

Lin from Off the Record explains...

To be Resilient Life is not always going to be easy. Sometimes even the best changes can seem scary and impossible at first.

Stress is an inevitability – a little bit of which can even be good and push us to do things we otherwise wouldn’t.

However, more stress than we can cope with can cause us to become unwell or run ourselves into the ground.

Resilience is simply the ability to stand back up when you’ve been knocked down. It can help us become more able to adapt to the changes, good and bad, in our lives.

We are constantly thrown into situations which are entirely new to us. We make mistakes and we fail sometimes. Instead of focusing on what’s gone wrong, take the time to point out the silver lining.

For example, at school you may get a bad grade in a subject and this may cause you to believe you are stupid and it is not worthwhile for you to pursue that or any subject.

Tip: at the end of the day, try to find 1-3 things that went well or didn’t go as badly as expected.

When we first introduce resilience to young people perhaps one of the most important messages we aim to impart is that these are learnable skills.

That’s not to say developing your resilience is easy. Treating yourself with kindness might not be something you’re used to.

Certainly, culturally we are told at school, in the workplace or in the media to focus on what we are bad at, to magnify our flaws and try to change them.

At the Resilience Lab we encourage people to share their own strategies and we introduce people to ones that they might not be familiar with, such as mindfulness. A lot of it is about experimenting and learning that it’s ok if something is not for you, but to try it anyway.

There is no one way to become resilient, and everyone is already practising resilience everyday.

Origami Jumping Frogs...

A simple but effective wellbeing tip from 1625ip’s Mental Health Worker Tia Giving yourself small, creative and fun projects is great for relieving stress and maintaining good mental health. Why not give this easy peasy origami frog project a try?

You can use any paper but it’s easier if it’s not too thick. Choose a colour or design that you like or you can get really creative and draw/paint your own.

Could be a good way to use up any left over wrapping paper.

The fun doesn’t have to end there, you can challenge your friends to frog jumping competitions and see whose goes the furthest...

When something breaks or your favourite pair of jeans rip - not in a good way - you throw them out, right? Wrong.

RenewALL

RenewALL is a weekly upcycling workshop where you can learn to turn old, drab or has-been items into great gifts or fabulous furnishings for your home.

Here’s star up-cycler Nikita with the lowdown on what to expect: What can I say about the up cycling course? It was great!

I had been enthusiastic about it before it began as I often surf the net for craft projects. This was a great way to learn more about ways you can create fantastic products at a very small cost using items that normally would have been thrown away.

In the first couple of sessions we made a big mood board to brainstorm our ideas and next we got stuck in using a sewing machine to create the most brilliantly simple cushion covers. I plan to make many more for my first flat which will be a big start to making it homely and personal.

My favourite little project during the course was creating a large dream catcher that now hangs beautifully in my room.

It was a really great experience meeting friendly people and learning new skills and I can’t wait to furnish my own flat using upcycling as inspiration. I would recommend all to get involved, you won’t regret it.

What’s good about upcycling? Everything!

Healthy pizza?!

Don’t mind if we do...

Hey! My name is Geo and I’m a Resident Adult for 1625ip. I have a passion for cooking healthy food on a budget.

Here are two quick recipes for a healthy main course and dessert that will cost you £1.36 per person! I’m basing these prices on how much it costs to get these ingredients from Tesco or Asda and average portion sizes.

Aubergine Pizzas and Sweet Potato Fries for two (costs £1.11p per person) Aubergine pizzas

1 Aubergine ½ Can of tinned tomatoes ½ Onion 1 Sweet potato 4-6 Mushrooms Garlic 50g of cheese Oil Preheat oven to 200 degrees 1. Chop aubergine on its side into half-inch rounds, so you have little round circles like mini pizzas then lightly salt each side and leave them to dry on a piece of kitchen roll for 10 minutes as they have a lot of water in them!

2. While you let the aubergines dry, chop up your onion and garlic and cook them on a low heat in a frying pan. Once they are brown add half a tin of tomatoes and let it simmer on the low heat while you do step 3 (little tip, I like adding a spoonful of butter to make the sauce extra rich!)

3. Add a small amount of oil to each side of aubergine, place them on a baking tray and put them in the oven for 20 minutes.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner...

Well, aubergine - but definitely a winner!

4. By the time the aubergines are cooked, your sauce should be nice and thick and full of flavour. Take the aubergines out of the oven and spoon a bit of your tomato sauce on each one. Then slice your mushrooms and put them on top. Finally add your grated cheese then pop them back in the oven for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted and gone golden brown.

(You can experiment with what you put on top of these mini pizzas, I love adding tuna and sweetcorn to the tomato sauce!)

Sweet Potato Fries

1 Large sweet potato Oil Salt and pepper to taste 1. Take your sweet potato with the skin still on and cut it lengthways into thin fries 2. Put into a small plastic bag with some oil, a pinch of salt and pepper then shake them around until all the fries are covered 3. Pour out onto baking tray and cook in oven for 15-20 minutes (turn them over half way through)

2 Minute Healthy(ish) Layered Dessert (costs 25p per person) ½ a tin of canned fruit (I like peaches!) ¼ a pot of natural yoghurt 2 digestive biscuits 2 small glasses 1. Put your two digestive biscuits in a freezer bag or a small clean plastic bag. Use the tin of fruit like a rolling pin and bash the biscuits until they’re in tiny pieces.

2. Once that’s done, open your canned fruit and place a few pieces in the bottom of your glass 3. Dollop a layer of yogurt with a spoon then add a few bits of your crumbled biscuit, then add a another layer of fruit, yoghurt and biscuit!

4. All done, enjoy!

Straight talking, no b*llsh*t advice from Cash Pointers’ Harry Greatorex and da Youth Board...

Hi Rob, Sounds like your mate might fancy your girlfriend! Messing her around like that doesn’t seem like a particularly good idea. As well as hurting her feelings, you might find that it costs you a lot more to win her back, if you can at all.

It’s not unusual to feel like you have to spend money to show people you care. But most people care less about presents and more about spending time and having experiences with the people they love.

Organising a day out together or cooking a nice meal needn’t cost a lot of money. For tips of free things to do together, go to visitbristol.co.uk and click on ‘Free Days Out’.

If you don’t know your wok from your whisk, come down to our Skills Kitchen at head office and get a free cooking class. My top tip is to buy tea lights (mini candles) from a discount store you can usually get fifty for about a pound. Then use the candles to create a romantic mood!

If you are more creative, you might be able to write her a story or draw a picture.

Above all, talk to your girlfriend about how you feel. Everyone struggles with money from time to time. You might find she cares less about presents than you think.

Perhaps do something nice together than doesn’t cost too much money, like cooking her a meal and spend time together.
