S.E.S. announces September Students of the Month Submitted Report Contributor
Selmer Elementary School and Mrs. Jennifer Taylor with Project BASIC are pleased to announce the outstanding Students of the Month for September. Each month, one student is selected from each classroom for exhibiting outstanding character from one of the pillars of character and following the I CARE Rules
which are ongoing themes in their guidance classes and Project BASIC classes throughout the year. During September students learned about being “responsible” and practiced what they learned. Being “responsible” takes hard work and deserves recognition. Each of these students was awarded a special Certificate of Achievement and a special treat from McDonalds. Congratulations to each of these “Responsible Students” at Selmer Elementary School.

Red Ribbon/Character Counts Week at Adamsville Elementary By Diane Dierks Contributor
Adamsville Elementary School will celebrate Red Ribbon/Character Counts week on Oct. 29 – Nov. 2. To kick off the week, students have completed an art activity and watched an informative video to educate the students on the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol, beer, tobacco, and other substance abuse. Students were also educated about the harmful effects of bullying and unkind or disrespectful behaviors. Every day this week will have a Red Ribbon/ Character Counts theme. Students may dress according to the day’s theme. Monday, Oct. 29 – “Angry Birds Knock Out Drugs!” Students may wear their Angry Bird character counts shirts or the color that represents their grades. (Pre-K – gray, Kindergarten- orange, 1st – light blue, 2nd- yellow, 3rd – dark green,

4th – red, 5th – sapphire blue, 6th- lime green). Tuesday, Oct. 30 – (Lounge Day) “Don’t Day Dream about Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco, or Unhealthy Behaviors!” Students may wear flannel pants or appropriate lounge pants with a t-shirt or sweatshirt. (House shoes are NOT permitted.) Wednesday, Oct. 31 – (Cowboy/Cowgirl Day) “Round ‘Em Up and Choose to Stay Away from Poisons, Drugs, and Bullies!” Students may dress up accordingly but are NOT allowed to wear hats. Thursday, Nov. 1 – (Camo/Black-out Day) “Black Out Drugs! Don’t Let Drugs and Alcohol Camouflage Your Life!” Students may wear camouflage or all black. Friday, Nov. 2 – (Cardinal Crazy Day) “Cardinals Are Crazy about Good Choices and Good Character!” Students may wear Cardinal shirts or colors. It is important that students abide by the school dress code. Appropriate shirts, pants, skirts, shoes, etc. must be
worn. No hats are permitted. This week is also dedicated to better educate students about healthy choices versus unhealthy choices. Healthy choices include such decisions as nutritious foods, exercise, good character, and friendship skills. Unhealthy choices include unhealthy foods, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, bullying, and not exercising good character. Earlier this year, A.E.S. has adopted the 5210 Nutrition and Fitness Program. The basic program is as follows: 5fruits and vegetables a day; 2- less than 2 hours of screen time per day; 1- one or more hours of daily physical activity; 0- sugary drinks. To enhance the education lessons that have already been implemented in academic and specialty classes, we will emphasize positive activities to correlate with areas such as visual arts, sports, and academics. Our goal is to help students make good decisions to help them live happy, healthy lives.
