Interview SaRaha – Breaking Boundaries through Music
Currently making vibes in Tanzania through her catchy music tunes and perfect Kiswahili lyrics is Swedish born, Sara Larsson – more popularly known as, SaRaha. In spite of her very fair skin tone and blonde hair, SaRaha may look different, but she is certainly not a foreigner to the Tanzanian culture. Having lived in Tanzania and East Africa for almost all her childhood, SaRaha developed a deep bond of belonging to the African culture. Coming from a completely different part of the world was certainly not keeping her away from exploring the Tanzanian way of living - with her focus being, bongo music. Inquisitive to know more about her remarkable journey so
far, Incredible Dar organized an interview with the budding artist. Exploring Bongo For SaRaha, music had always been her first love. Speaking about exploring bongo music and finally deciding to make a career out of singing, SaRaha said, ‘I always had a passion for music and started writing songs in my early teens, I have played with different band constellations and experimented with different styles of music. In 2009 I went back to Tanzania and discovered the East African pop scene and fell in love with the music. It was something I felt I just had to do, and since then, afro-pop has been my musical

focus.’ Breaking into the Industry For SaRaha, breaking into the industry had its own share of ups and downs. Coming from a contrasting cultural and ethnic background, SaRaha at first was not seen as a ‘real’ Tanzanian artist, since Bongo flava had generally been dominated by ethnic East Africans, she was clearly seen a foreigner and barely taken seriously. At the same time, being a different face in the crowd, made it easier for the people to recognize her and remember her music. After two years of strug-

gling to make a name for herself in the industry, it was in 2011, when she started using her stage name, SaRaha. She released her first Swahili song, Tanesco which received a lot of acclamation from critics and followers across the country. Today SaRaha’s music has successfully made its mark in the industry with chart topping songs, and vibrant videos that are frequently aired on local channels. International Reception Speaking about the fact SaRaha releases her music internationally as well, especially in her hometown, Sweden, SaRaha said, ‘Just like being different in Tanzania has positive and negative sides, it is similar releasing music that is different in Sweden. On the one hand, people are really interested in hearing something new as they don’t have much access
to African pop in Sweden, which makes them open for my music. At the same time, many people have difficulties letting new ideas and sounds in, and the Swahili music may seem distant to them. My song Mbele Kiza was played a lot on the Swedish radio during 2014, even entered
2015 | www.incredibledar.com | Incredible Dar | 7
the Swedish pop chart Svensktoppen, and received a lot of positive reactions.’ Future Projects When asked about her future projects, SaRaha was hopeful to bring something big to the industry but unwilling to spill the beans, she said, ‘At the moment I have a few new projects coming up in collaboration with Swedish producers, some of them in Swedish, which is an exciting new thing for me! Also I keep working on new projects with Tanzanian artists and producers, but I won’t reveal just yet what it is.’ Finally, speaking about her fans, and those wanting to make it big in the music industry, SaRaha had a special message for them: ‘Try to find your own voice and expression, keep practicing and writing new things daily. Things never happen by chance, you have to work hard to reach your goals. Most important - never lose your love for music!’

Interview Lights, Camera, Action: Tête-à-Tête
with Amil Shivji
In the world of filmmaking, the actors may dominate the screens and the hearts of the viewers, but the man sitting behind the camera, on the director’s chair is the one who actually give birth to these movie characters, may toil in relative obscurity. This however, is not quite true for Tanzanian filmmaker Amil Shivji, who at the age of 25 has been credited to produce critically acclaimed films like Shoeshine and Samaki Mchangani. To know more about the role of a filmmaker, Incredible Dar interviewed the documentary film maker himself. incredible dar: How did you realize you wanted to make films in Tanzania since the local industry was pretty much inactive? Amil Shivji: I wouldn’t say the local film sector was inactive. If anything, it was just picking up, and still is. I studied filmmaking in Toronto and kept up with the Dar film scene via blogs and social media. It was never in question whether I would return to Tanzania after my studies or not. I knew I was coming back the second I left to pursue my studies. Keeping that in mind, I wanted to be prepared. As soon as I landed, I did my best to jump on set, network with other filmmakers and artists and find a way forward. The very reason why I make films is because I, as many other Tanzanians, have a deep desire to tell a story. Our story. My form of expression is cinema and the only stories I can tell are the ones I know, Tanzanian stories. incredible dar: Your films are inspired by the stories of everyday people, and the current social and political scenario in Tanzania. What kind of response do you wish to see from people while you make these films? Amil Shivji: Making films of this kind of genre is asking your audience to question
10 | Incredible Dar | www.incredibledar.com | 2015
structures of power. If someone watches my film and it provokes a discussion and/or consciousness of issues raised in the film is what I wish to see. incredible dar: How powerful as a medium do you believe films or movies are to inspire social change? Amil Shivji: African filmmakers have been using cinema to express their dissatisfaction with the system since the late 60s. Those films to date are extremely inspiring and motivating to keep the struggle alive. Cinema has the widest reach, especially know with technological exposure and cinematically conscious audiences. If you ever want to gain someone’s attention, show them moving images. incredible dar: Owing to the fact that in today’s age, everyone owns a good quality camera or smartphones with video recording facility, do you think anyone can shoot a video and make a documentary?
2015 | www.incredibledar.com | Incredible Dar | 11
Amil Shivji: Anyone can shoot a video but not everyone can make a film. Film is an art, not a technique. There are so many aspects to make films whether narrative or documentary, pressing the record button is actually the easiest. Throughout the three stages of production, different mediums of art are combined to produce an overall piece of mixed media work. It is definitely a good thing that shooting devices are easily accessible, but the art of filmmaking needs to be mastered which takes time and commitment. incredible dar: What is the next project you are currently working on? Amil Shivji: We are about to release a feature film called ‘Aisha’ that was made in collaboration with Uzikwasa, a Pangani based NGO that uses art to address social issues in the region. This will be our first feature and we really look forward to local and international response. I am also working with the Tanzania Heritage Project on a feature documentary about a band of all-star musicians who have come together from the Zilipendwa era in an attempt to revive the golden era of Tanzanian music. incredible dar: Any message for our readers or those who wish to break into the industry? Amil Shivji: We need to give priority to stories told from our perspective whether it be science fiction, melodramatic horror or a social commentary. Let it be in the context of our society and do justice to our people. Recycling Items Green Choices: Recycling Food Packaging Food packaging waste is an observable problem in Tanzania. When walking or driving through the city of Dar-es-Salaam juice containers, tin foil cans and plastic containers are seen lying on the street – useless, harming the sight of a beautiful raw nation. The truth is that Tanzania is a developing country that lacks in resources that facilitate recycling of food packages. Many argue that this is a minor issue compared to the bigger picture
involving a poverty stricken economy but the fact still remains that in order to curb climate change we all have to work together. Moreover, there are many ways in which we can recycle food packages domestically to our own benefit. Below are examples of how we can recycle everyday materials to create something creative instead of going to the store to buy something that creates more waste. Egg cartons which are already made up of recycled paper, moulded pulp and clear plastic are sometimes hard to keep around the house without any use. These cartons may seem useless but there are many uses to it: lThey can be used as a coin holder where different types of coins can be
14 | Incredible Dar | www.incredibledar.com | 2015
separated by the egg holders. mEgg cartons can also be used as storage for small things such as golf balls, ornaments (lights, jewellery etc.) when decorating, and games and toy storage. tIt can also be used as a desk and jewellery organizer, to make it look appealing fabric can cover the tray and then small jewellery such as cufflinks, earrings, paper clips, push pins and rubber bands. The use of plastic bottles is very common as many people use them for water and then throw them away. Unfortunately, Tanzania does not have specific bins where we can throw in recyclables. However, there are people who that collect plastic bottles to earn what little cash they can. There are also many ways we can recycle plastic bottles. tAlfred Moser a Brazilian mechanic invented an extraordinary way to light up homes using a plastic bottle, water and two capfuls of bleach. The plastic
bottle filled with the water and bleach mixture allows the sun to be retracted, allowing sunlight into dark place. A very simple tool that can allow areas without electricity to enjoy the wonders of light. tIf you have many bottles lying around you can create a vertical garden by cutting the top of the plastic filling it with soil and planting a seed. tAnother great idea is creating shade using plastic bottles such as the image below; this can also apply to creating shade in the city for the public to also set an example to everyone about the benefits of reusing everyday objects. tBelieve it or not, plastic bottles can also be used to create a raft. The buoyancy of a water bottle is suited for a raft. If we can provide and educate the citizens about recycling and reusing waste and also provide them with bins around the city that allow for recycling and reusing, the city would be kept
2015 | www.incredibledar.com | Incredible Dar | 15
clean, we would decrease our waste and thus reducing the cost of pollution. The cost of littering and having large amount of waste is far greater than the cost of creating a clean environment and reducing our carbon footprint. Moreover, many industries that involve food packing should be incentivized by the public and the government to create more suitable packaging allowing for recycling. Men’s Grooming Guide: Hair Care Whether it is a receding hairline that has made you cover your head with a baseball cap, or a flaky scalp, let us be honest, hair is not just what women worry about, but hair problems can distress a man too. However, lucky for you, most of these issues have some very easy solutions that ask you to make some very small changes like changing a shampoo or getting a specific haircut. We have come up with a list of remedies for common hair problems that most men go through. Read on to know how to get ahead of your hair situation.
Otherwise, if you feel hair loss looks inevitable in your case, a good haircut may help give you a better look.
Receding hairline One common hair problem most men face is a receding hairline. Luckily, there is a lot one can do to make sure the hair loss does not look very obvious. Coconut hair oil and almond hair oil are both known to help stimulate hair growth, making it a great solution to hair loss.
Thick or Curly Hair Thick or curly hair may make your head feel heavy especially in the heat of the summers. The most practical solution to this problem is going for a manageable haircut that helps you survive the heat of Dar es Salaam, and keeps your head cool at the same time. For unmanageable
Dandruff Another common hair problem is dandruff. Severe dandruff can cause depression as well as embarrassment. Anti-dandruff shampoos and over the counter remedies may help in overcoming dandruff. However, if none of that works, it is recommended to visit a good dermatologist to discuss prescription antifungal and anti-inflammatory medicines.
26 | Incredible Dar | www.incredibledar.com | 2015
curly hair, applying gelling agents might seem like the only solution to tame your hair, however during summers, gels can make you feel even more uncomfortable with thick hair. It is a better idea to go for hair relaxing products instead. Gray Hair Gray hair is inevitable, but managing them can be a problem unless you accept them as a part of your appearance. On the other hand, if you decide to cherish your youth and dye your hair, make sure you stay clear of products that strip away moisture. In addition, it is a good idea to shampoo less often when you are dying your hair as hair dyes can dry your hair up, therefore it is always a good idea to moisturise them often. Thinning Hair Thinning hair can be difficult to cope with, and even harder to style. However, it is important to keep in mind the goal is to add volume to your hair. A good haircut might help you get the desired look. A professional hairdresser will know how to balance your hair to make look less thin and more dense. Good hair products may also help your hair achieve the volume you wish to have.

This article will reveal to you the foundation to weight loss success for life. I’m sure that many of you have been on many weight loss programs with no success whatsoever. Below I’ll reveal to you the foundation to successful weight loss for life. 1. Write up a weight loss plan The first step you should undertake to develop a slimmer body is to write-up a weight loss plan. Writing up a weight loss plan will help you stay focused on your weight loss goals thereby eliminating distractions that may appear from time to time. It will also make your weight loss journey a lot smoother and stress free allowing you to enjoy your journey. Things you should include in your plan include how much weight you would like to lose making sure you’re realistic about it (i.e. 2 - 4 pounds of fat loss per week),

writing shopping lists listing healthy foods, writing down specific exercises for you workout routine and planning your reward you would love to work towards, this reward maybe a be a pair of tight, well-fitting pants, shirts and maybe a holiday. 2. Eat frequently Contrary to popular belief towards weight loss you should eat more instead of eating less by eating smaller meals frequently throughout the day (i.e. 4-6 small meals), you’ll increase your metabolism thereby increasing your fat burning potential. However for many people preparing 4-6 small meals maybe too demanding on time therefore as an alternative I would suggest a 3 main meal, 3 snack approach. 3. Incorporate resistance training As part of your weight loss plan you should incorporate resistance training such as body weight exercises and weightlifting into your weight loss routine. Resistance training builds muscle mass allowing you the ability to burn fat faster as a result of
36 | Incredible Dar | www.incredibledar.com | 2015
the increased caloric demand from your muscle tissue. Simply said the more muscle mass you build the quicker and easier your fat loss. 4. Try HIIT cardio HIIT stand for High Intensity Interval Training and is considered to be far superior to regular cardio the reason being that HIIT cardio increases your EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) after you workout allowing you to burn fat for a whole 24 hours after your exercise session. HIIT is structured in alternating sets of walking and sprinting, for example 60 seconds of walking followed by 30 seconds of sprinting for one set. 5. Consume complex carbohydrates While many of you believe that carbohydrates are the main culprits to
weight loss, one should learn that not all carbohydrates are created equally, In fact as part of your balanced diet around 4550% of calories should be from complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body since they’re converted directly into glucose which is your body’s preferred choice of fuel. Carbohydrates you should avoid are simple carbohydrates such as white bread and white flour products. These carbohydrates spike your insulin levels leading to fat gain. So try your best to consume the bulk of your carbohydrates as complex carbohydrates. 6. Go to bed early By going to bed early you’ll allow your body plenty of recovery time after your exercise session. Hormones such as IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1), Melatonin and Testosterone are released during deep sleep thereby repairing muscle tissue as well as burning fat if you used HIIT cardio and removal of metabolic wastes. If you incorporate these 5 tips into your lifestyle today, you’ll eventually succeed in losing weight and keep that weight off for life.

How to Write a Professional Real Estate Property Description That Sells
By: Rose Manning Source: http://www.articlecity. com/articles/home_improvement/ article_7348.shtml There are do’s and don’ts when it comes to writing a professional property description that sells. An effective property description can determine whether or not you sell the property. Headline: To begin, your headline must jump out from the page and catch the attention of the buyer. Make the headline appealing with captivating and positive words. Description: Always begin your description with the selling points of the property. List the best features first to keep the attention of the buyer. Use adjectives to spice up the description. For example, instead of stating dining room, try spacious dining room for your family to gather and share
a meal. Let the buyer know why they will want the selling points of the house. It’s important to sell the area to potential buyer as well. Are you selling to someone looking for a single family home or a multi-million dollar estate? Highlight points in the area that appeal to your buyer like schools, shopping, public transportation, etc. Location: Include the geographical area in your description. Many buyers are looking to buy in a specific area. Price: Including the price of the property is especially important for the sale by owners. Price inclusion is a way to screen potential buyers. Call to Action: End your description with encouraging words for buyers to call you. Give them a reason for a call to action. This beautiful property will go fast, call now for more details.

Wording: Choose your words wisely and keep them positive. Certain words sound better and are more appealing to potential buyers. For instance try cozy instead of small. Now that you know what should go into an effective property description, you need to know what shouldn’t. Avoid the following: l Spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes l Uncommon abbreviations l Clich’s l Jargon l Passive voice l Over the top vocabulary Write in the present tense and make sure to include words like you and your in your description. This way potential buyers will feel as though you are speaking directly to them.
