Increasingly parents are now looking for technology for their children to help them with their studies, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation.

It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most catch-up TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best all-rounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99). In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top-end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle is just £59.99 and does the job perfectly well. It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be.

Christmas in Telford If you are looking for something to do with friends or family over the festive period then Telford is the place to be. How to Build Up Your Credit Rating Being able to borrow money when you need it is a crucial part of everyday life for most people. It enables you to enter the property market when the time comes, helps you buy your first car, and provides the means to deal with emergencies when they happen. Many undergraduate bank accounts offer a credit card and arranged overdraft facility when you start university, with the overdraft facility often being increased over the following years depending on the risk involved to the lender.

Using a creditbuilder credit card is one of the most effective ways to build a good credit history if it’s used properly. So that you don’t miss a payment, it’s a good idea to set up a direct debit from your bank – then at least there’ll be a minimum amount paid to your credit card each month, which you can always add to if necessary. • Make sure you’re on the electoral register Any lender will want to see that you have a fixed address, and be able to confirm your identity. This increases confidence that you’re trustworthy, but as a student living in halls the best option is to use your home address. You can apply to be included on the register by contacting your local council or using the gov.uk website. • If you apply for credit, use a landline number Putting a landline number on an application for borrowing, rather than a mobile number, indicates stability and will work in your favour when the lender makes their decision. • Don’t exceed your overdraft limit without authorisation

Do lenders think you will default? This is partly how lenders decide whether or not to accept an application for borrowing – it’s based largely on the risk of default that you present to them. This risk is assessed using your credit file, which contains a credit rating and other information. The problem for you as a university student is that, because of your age, you’re unlikely to have a credit history that lenders can use. They can’t predict how you’ll manage your money, so having no credit history can be as bad as a poor one in their eyes. There are certain steps you can take to address this problem, however, and build up a good credit rating at university. The earlier you start, the better your credit file will look to a lender later on. Building a good credit rating certainly takes time, but when your degree course is finished and you start work, you’ll be thankful for the steps you’ve already taken. So what can you do to help yourself at this stage? • Apply for a credit-builder credit card These credit cards are for people with no credit history, or a poor credit rating that needs to be rebuilt. In your case, a card such as this will allow you to build up a good credit history, as long as you are sensible and use it in the right way. You should use it each month to pay for regular but relatively low outgoings - your food shopping, for example, or rail tickets. The crucial part is to pay off the balance in full, and without fail, every month. Missing a single payment will instantly damage your credit

Going over your arranged overdraft limit, even for a day, will trigger high interest charges and other fees, but crucially it will also damage your credit score. If you know that you’re going to need extra money for a limited time, talk to your bank and see if they’ll agree to increase your limit, even if it’s only on a temporary basis. • Avoid taking out store cards Store cards often have higher interest rates than credit cards. If you’re offered one when you’re shopping, it may give you 20% off your bill, but the risk of overspending on it and damaging your credit rating for the long-term just isn’t worth it. • Avoid multiple applications for credit If you’re refused credit by one or more lenders it will adversely affect your credit rating, so it’s a good idea to avoid making multiple applications at the same time. • Pay all your bills on time It’s not just your credit card bill that you need to pay on time – you should make sure all your household and other bills, such as broadband and mobile phone, are paid promptly. Setting up a direct debit ensures that you don’t forget. • Include rent payments in your credit file The Rental Scheme was first introduced in 2016. It involves paying your rent to the landlord through an intermediary, who informs the credit reference agencies that you’ve paid on time. The three main credit reference agencies in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit – each hold their own information about your credit history. SEMI-PROFESSIONAL ICE HOCKEY TEAM

Telford has seen many changes over the last 50 years but did you know that there has been a semiprofessional ice hockey team in the town since 1985?

There is much more to the club than the top two teams however, as junior hockey in Telford is the real key to the future of the Tigers and continues to nurture stars of the future. Age groups range from learn to play, Under 9’s through to Under 18’s.

Well, the Telford Tigers are still going strong and start their league campaign in a revamped league at the start of September. Tigers are an ice hockey club with two teams playing in the National Ice Hockey Leagues (NIHL) 1 & 2 respectively.

Over the years the junior hockey system has produced a steady stream of local talent, including Rick Plant, 7 time league winner in the EPL as well current senior players Adam Taylor, Josh Hustwick, Ben Washburn and recently Brodie Jesson.

In 2014/2015, Telford Tigers won the English Premier League (EPL) title by some distance, before collecting the British Challenge Cup in a thrilling final against Manchester Phoenix. The 2016 /2017 saw some considerable additions to the previous years team and Tigers once again won the EPL. 2017 / 2018 sees the start of a brand new chapter with a ‘One Club Two Teams’ brand as the club competes in division 1&2 in the NIHL North. Under the guidance of Head Coach and General Manager, former Great Britain player Tom Watkins, Tigers will be one of the teams expected to challenge for silverware.

A number of the juniors have recently been recognised with national honours, including Grace Garbett and Teagan Hyatt, who were invited to training camp with the England Girls School of Excellence and U18’s players Brodie Jesson, Henry Adams and Dan Mitchell invited for a trial with GB. From the learn to play program to the Tigers first team, the club are community focused, looking to encourage people of both sexes and all ages to come along and join in, try out the sport or just cheer on all the teams and players as they compete for silverware this season in a fun and family friendly atmosphere. Helping Children

It can be bewildering when your child has a meltdown, as the reason for it often seems pretty minor. However, while children may think they’re upset because their sibling got an extra sweet or because they want to carry on watching TV, there’s often an underlying issue. Tiredness, hunger and sugar crashes can all make children over-emotional. Of course, children often won’t realise why they’re feeling like they do and may be very quick to tell you that no they’re not hungry, they’re cross because you’re just being SO UNFAIR. Children also often store up any anxieties and let them loose in a safe place, i.e. at home. An argument with a friend at school, for instance, can result in a shouting match over switching the TV off at home. Or, if your child is worried that you might love their siblings more than you love them, a perceived unfairness can be a trigger to letting that worry come out. A worry box can be a useful tool for discovering any underlying anxieties that may be bothering your child. Help them to decorate a cardboard box and write ‘Our worry box’ on the side. Encourage your child to write down when something is worrying them, and to pop it in the box. If they’re too young to write their worry down, they could draw it or ask you to write it for them. Just the act of getting it down on paper can sometimes help children to work through the issue. Pick a quiet time, when your child seems at ease, to take out a piece of paper and discuss the worry. If your child is still feeling anxious about the issue, they can put it back in the box. Otherwise they can throw it away.

TO DEAL WITH BIG EMOTIONS

Coping with a meltdown A meltdown is usually fast and furious, but short lived. Speaking in a low, soothing voice can help children to calm down. Just repeating that they’re OK and that you’re here can be all that’s needed. Keeping calm when you’re being screamed at is certainly difficult, but reciprocating will just escalate the situation. If you need to walk away and take a few minutes to breathe deeply, then do so. Young children aren’t always capable of logic, so attempting to reason with them often won’t help. Likewise, telling them to calm down, to stop crying, or to ‘suck it up’ will just make things worse. While giving in to your child’s demands can sometimes diffuse the situation, it won’t uncover any underlying causes for the meltdown and can make things worse in the long run. That being said, it’s always a good idea to properly consider their request before a situation escalates. It’s often very easy to say ‘no’ without actually considering whether there’s room to meet halfway. Once your child has calmed down, you might want to sit with them while they eat a non-sugary snack. Big emotions can be scary and tiring for children. It will take years for them to develop the mental capacity to be able to properly control their emotions, so don’t try to make them feel guilty about losing control. Instead, ask whether they want to talk about what just happened and about how they’re feeling. A hug can go a long way towards making both of you feel better too.

INSPIRED BY COLOUR

Everything changed from the early 19th century, however, when chemists, spurred on by the industrialisation of textile production, began to develop synthetic colours, and the price of ‘colour’ began to fall. Many new colours were developed and old ones were improved – though there were exceptions. Emerald Green, for example, commercially available from 1814 to the early 1900s, was based on arsenic, and fumes from wallpaper – including designs by William Morris – printed with the ink could be deadly. The new Victorian palette included bottle greens, gold, burgundy, crimson, rose, violet and mahogany, as well as intense chemical yellows, blues and greens, the results of the invention of aniline dye colours used first for wallpapers and textiles, and then for paints. The story of colour is the story of society, of fashion, of the way we live, of science, of art – in fact, of mankind itself. We look at all aspects of colour, from its history to this year’s most fashionable shades. Did you know that there was a time when green wallpaper could kill you? Or that a very expensive dye was once made from boiled snails? But first, the early history. It was back in the Palaeolithic era - about 35,000 years ago - that Stone Age man began to create cave paintings in which earth pigments were mixed with resin, water or glue made from animal bones and hides. For many centuries, the most widely used natural pigments were extracted from soil and rocks, plants, insects (cochineal, for example) and animals (the distinctive Suffolk pink was made by diluting whitewash with bull’s blood). Ash and chalk were also basics; at a price, however, it was possible for strong, bright pigments or dyes to be extracted from other sources. Ultramarine blue, for example, came from ground lapis lazuli gemstones, and was once more expensive than gold (hence in art it was often reserved for painting the robes of Mary and the infant Christ), while Tyrian purple required 10,000 boiled snails to produce one gram of dye, and was employed for fabrics worn only by kings, queens and emperors. Historically, the use of colour was governed by its ease of availability – and therefore its cost. The richest colours were always reserved for the most important parts of religious and royal interiors. In the Georgian period, the ‘common’ colours that were affordable and widely available included stone and timber colours, greys and whites – in the form of distemper and white lead. Middle class households would often use the slightly more expensive oil colours such as ‘drab’ (dull brownish grey), olive, pea green and sky blue. More expensive paints included pink, lemon, orange and straw colour, while the most costly were verdigris, ultramarine and smalt, a glittering blue. It was household income, on the whole, rather than personal taste, which determined how colourful a home could be.

In a reaction to these bold Victorian colours, perhaps unsurprisingly, Edwardian hues became softer and paler and, ever since, colour has followed the roller-coaster of fashion as well as inevitable scientific advances: from the ‘greeneryyallery’ of the Aesthetic movement to the brilliant white produced by the introduction of titanium dioxide in 1916, and from the sorbet colours of the Fifties right through to the ontrend pinks, blues and greens of 2017. These days, ready-made paint colours are inspired by historical periods, fashion themes, travel, architecture, the natural world – or you can have them specially mixed to any hue you desire. It’s fair to say that the modern world of colour has no limits.

FOR FIRST-TIME BUYERS AND EXISTING HOMEOWNERS Shared Ownership Eligibility You may be eligible for the Shared Ownership scheme if your annual household income is £80,000 or less (£90,000 or less in London) and: • This is your first home. • You have been a homeowner, but are now unable to afford a property.

If you are an existing homeowner wanting to move up the property ladder, or are looking to buy your first home, a number of government schemes could help you make that investment. From boosting your savings for a deposit to buying a share in a property, take a look below at the main government initiatives to find one that suit your circumstances.

Help to Buy ISA Eligibility • First-time buyers only. • Purchase price of up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). • You must live in the property. • It must be your only home. How it works The government boosts your Help to Buy ISA savings by 25%, up to a maximum of £3,000, so for every £100 you save into the ISA you will receive an additional £25 from the government. If you and a partner are saving for your first home together, you can each open a Help to Buy ISA and take advantage of a savings boost of up to £6,000 in total.

Equity Loan (in England) Eligibility • Applies to new-builds only. • First-time buyers and existing homeowners may be eligible. • Property purchase price up to £600,000 in England. • You must live in the property, and not sub-let it. • It must be your only property. • The home must be purchased from a registered Help to Buy builder.

• You already use the shared ownership scheme. How it works You purchase between 25% and 75% of the property outright and pay a subsidised rent on the outstanding portion. You may be able to purchase more shares until you own the whole property, and the rent is reduced proportionately.

Starter Home Scheme The Starter Home scheme is the latest government initiative to help first-time buyers in England onto the property ladder. Although not yet fully up and running, these are the latest eligibility criteria and details known. Eligibility • First-time buyers aged between 23 and 40. • Maximum household income of £80,000 (£90,000 in London). • Must have a mortgage. • There will be restrictions on the resale or letting of the property for 15 years after purchase. How it works The government is offering a minimum discount of 20% on a property’s market value, so purchasers will need a mortgage of up to 80%. The purchase price after the discount can be up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). Starter homes under this scheme will be exempt from the Community Infrastructure Levy, which house builders normally have to pay to local authorities. What has caused a housing crisis in recent years? A rise in the UK population, falling numbers of new-build properties and high prices in certain areas of the country have all combined to create a dire need for affordable housing. There is a growing trend in Telford of people getting stuck in between selling their home and buying a new one. I am going out to see lots of people who want to move, are happy with their valuation, but will not go on the market until they have found somewhere to move to. And that can present a problem.

“If your house isn’t even on the market when you find your ideal new home, you are in a pretty poor bargaining position from the outset.” You will potentially be under pressure to pay the full asking price on your chosen home to persuade the seller to hold it while you sell yours.

And you will then be quite likely to be ready to accept a low offer on your home because you will need to sell quickly. What often happens in these circumstances is that you end up missing out on your ideal home because the seller accepts a rival offer from someone who was ready to move. Sellers see it as chicken and egg, but you might not even get the chance to view some of the prime new instructions if your house is not on the market because some vendors will turn you away. Hello from Coleman Estates in Sunny Wellington! So much for the traditional ‘quiet summer months’ - At Coleman Estates, we agreed 16 sales between the end of June and the end of July making us the top selling branch of estate agents in Telford as well as letting 17 properties in our letting department! No mean feat considering that we seem to have had the annual rainfall of Seattle in the past month (Obvious observation of the month: if it rains, people tend to cancel their viewings). So how is the property sales market in general? Due to available stock being at a 40 year low, we are achieving a high number of sales with many asking price offers with unprecedented demand for all types of property - simply put, it is a sellers market! In my opinion, this could do with correcting with more property coming on to the market, offering more choice and stabilising house prices. High selling prices sound great on paper... unless you’re upsizing or god forbid, moving south within an hour and a half of London (think 2-3 bed semi / terrace depending on area in exchange for your nice four bed detached in Priorslee). This brings me onto a question that I am frequently asked at the moment:

‘Should I put my house on the market when we haven’t found anywhere we want to buy yet?’

The answer is a resounding ‘YES!’ for two reasons: - As a vendor, the ball is in your court in today’s market; unless we agree a sale to a buyer with a long chain (rarer and rarer these days thankfully) your buyer will usually be very understanding that you will need 4-6 weeks to find a new property.You’re our client - we work to your timescale. If you can’t find somewhere in this timeframe, most buyers will wait (due to a lack of alternative choice) or we can remarket and begin again. - The second reason hits even closer to home: Take two examples we sold in Priorslee recently; Carlton Drive, which sold for the full asking price when a hawkeyed buyer spotted our board and Highgrove Meadows which sold for the full asking price within 3 days of marketing. By the time we arrange professional photography, your EPC and floorplan, the property you had your eye on is under offer. The bottom line is that if you’re not on the market, you are going to miss out time and time again. My advice would be to be brave, to take the plunge and trust our experienced team to help you move into your dream home. FOUR LANES, OR THREE WITH A HARD SHOULDER?

If you’ve driven on Britain’s motorways recently, you can’t fail to have noticed that the hard shoulder is sometimes being turned into another lane. On some motorways this new lane is at times a lane and at others a hard shoulder. Indications on gantries above the lanes tell you when this is the case. These roads are termed “smart motorways” and there are three types: those with “Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running”, ones with “All Lane Running” and a third called “Controlled Motorways”. So, what exactly are these? When driving on a Dynamic Hard Shoulder motorway, expect the hard shoulder to be a lane at busy periods and a hard shoulder at other times; when it’s a lane you can use refuges, placed every 500m or so, to stop in an emergency. All Lane Running is just that: the hard shoulder has gone, replaced by an emergency refuge every 2.5km. Controlled Motorways are like old style motorways: three or four lanes with a permanent hard shoulder. Except now the carriageways are subject to variable speed limits.

If you breakdown on the first two types of motorway, and can nurse your car to a refuge, don’t just set off after fixing the fault: gone is the Highway Code directive of “gather speed on the hard shoulder and rejoin the carriageway”. Now you must contact the Highways Agency, who will then escort you back onto the carriageway. Statistically motorways are the safest roads in the UK, but with three lanes or sometimes four, variable limits and no continuous hard shoulder, it’s still best to know what kind of road you are travelling on. With its new Z.E.40 battery, the Renault Zoe now boasts a real-world range of up to 184 miles. Simon Davis puts it to the test. The Renault Zoe could be the Twizy quadricycle’s older sister. However, the Zoe is a proper family car with five seats, a boot and a useable realworld electric driving range. It’s also a zero-emissions vehicle, meaning it qualifies for the government’s full £4,500 plugin car grant, and there is no vehicle excise duty.

What’s new? The Zoe has been facelifted for 2017 and gains a new battery – the Z.E.40. There’s also the new Signature Nav top-level trim. This new battery dramatically increases its appeal compared with its rivals. The quoted 250-mile range is based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), however, and Renault says that realistically this will be closer to 184 miles in summer and 124 miles in the winter.

Our test vehicle was fitted with Renault’s R90 electric motor, developing 91bhp and 220Nm of torque, giving a 0-60mph time of 13.3 seconds and a top speed of 84mph.

That low price point is apparent in the cabin, where you’ll find plenty of cheap and scratchy plastic surfaces. Compared with the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, the Zoe’s interior is a let-down.

The Zoe comes with a home-charging unit, so you’ll be able to replenish its batteries in as little as seven hours.

What’s it like to drive? While the electric motor reaches 30mph in a timely fashion, it takes a long time to reach open road speeds, so the Zoe isn’t ideal for long-distance drives. Around town, however, the Zoe is perfectly capable. Visibility is good, it’s comfortable, easy to drive and its relatively small size makes for easy parking. The steering is rather vague, though, and the regenerative brakes are rather grabby.

We think the Zoe is pretty and very chic, and one of the most attractive-looking EVs on sale today.

It wins on space, however. Two adults can sit in relative comfort in the back seats as long as the front passengers are not too tall. Boot space stands at a decent 338 litres.

What’s the spec like? Standard equipment is fairly generous: even entry-level models include Renault’s R-Link infotainment system and satellite navigation. Our mid-range Dynamique Nav specification test car had a hands-free key card, DAB radio, Bluetooth audio streaming and rear parking sensors. Prices for the Renault Zoe start at just £14,245, considerably less than its rivals. However, that does not include the mandatory monthly battery hire fee, which costs upwards of £59 per month based on mileage.

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

The Bridge Inn is situated just off the main High Street in Lower Bar, Newport and with a recent makeover on the outside of the building it certainly stands out as you pass through the centre of Newport. The new owner, Michael Smylie took over about a year ago and has worked hard to revamp the building both inside and out. As you enter there is a lovely snug area with comfy seating by the inglenook fireplace. As you head towards the rear of the building you are greeted by the impressive well stocked bar and if you continue past the bar you will reach the lower ground dining area with its vaulted ceiling and exposed brickwork, where further seating is available. We were seated just past the bar area next to a window looking out onto the courtyard. Our drinks order was promptly taken, Nik chose a glass of Malbec and I thought I would try one of the many gins on offer, the grapefruit and coconut gin was a great choice! As well as the main menu there was also a specials board with a varied selection of main courses including fish dishes and vegetarian options. For starters Nik chose the Devilled Whitebait and I ordered the Ham Hock Terrine. The Devilled Whitebait was served with salad, tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. Nik said the whitebait had a beautifully light crispy coating with a hint of spice from the paprika, a wonderful starter. My Ham Hock Terrine had lovely chunky pieces of ham and came with two slices of toast, a mixed crispy salad and a delicious apple chutney. I chose my main meal from the specials board which was the Chicken Breast in a red wine sauce and Nik selected the Beef Short Rib off the main menu.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT The succulent chicken breast had a tasty crisp skin and was served with new potatoes, a lovely mix of vegetables including green beans, mange tout and baby carrots, there was also a mushroom and red wine sauce which worked perfectly with this dish.

The Bridge Inn is the only Free House locally and stocks a good selection of real ales, draught lagers, wine, spirits and plenty of soft drinks, Michael said, "I am delighted to be an independent outlet and not tied to any breweries." Children are welcome here and although there is no childrens menu they can order smaller portions off the menu.

Nik's slow roasted beef short rib was melt in the mouth tender and the meat just fell away from the bone, it was served with an intensley rich gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, sweet baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans, a great hearty main course.

On Sundays the full menu is available and there is always a couple of roasts to choose from on the specials board. At lunchtimes there is also a range of sandwiches to choose from, as well as the main menu.

We just about had room for a dessert and I ordered the Raspberry Roulade and Nik chose the Cherry Bakewell Tart.

Food is served Wednesday to Saturday between 12:00-2:30pm at lunchtimes and evenings between 5:00-9:30pm and also on Sundays between 12-6pm.

The roulade had a lovely light textured meringue with a slight crispness to the outside and the raspberry sauce, strawberries and blueberries added a lovely sweetness to the dish.

There is a great range of food available which is priced very reasonably, so is great value for money. Pop in and try it for yourself but it would be best to book a table in advance to save any disappointment!

Nik enjoyed his Cherry Bakewell Tart which was wonderfully moist and packed with juicy cherries and sliced almonds and was served with a light vanilla custard.

Recipe

COCONUT RICE PUDDING WITH CARAMELISED APPLES A classic with a twist, this creamy rice pudding has added coconut milk for extra flavour and is served with spiced apples in a caramel sauce. Serves 4 Ready in 2 hours 30 mins

INGREDIENTS: • 50g unsalted butter, softened • 100g pudding rice • 400ml full-fat milk • 200ml coconut milk • 40g caster sugar • 1 tbsp runny honey • 2 red apples, skinned, cored and cut into wedges • 75g demerara sugar • 1-2 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 tbsp apple juice

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130°C, gas 2. Use a little of the softened butter to thoroughly grease a 1.2-litre shallow ovenproof dish. 2. Tip the pudding rice into the buttered dish and stir in the milk and coconut milk. Add the caster sugar and stir again. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Carefully remove the dish and give the pudding a good stir, then stir in the honey and dot with a little more of the butter. Return to the oven for a further 1 hour 30 minutes or until a golden skin has formed and most of the milk has been absorbed by the rice. 3. About 10 minutes before the rice pudding is ready, melt the rest of the butter in a heavy–based frying pan over a medium heat. Add the apple slices and fry for 1-2 minutes, turning once. Sprinkle over the demerara sugar and cook gently, without stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the cinnamon and apple juice and simmer for a further few minutes until syrupy. 4. Stir the rice pudding (remove the skin first, if preferred) and spoon into bowls. Top with the apples and syrup and serve.

TIP You can use other fruit slices instead of the apples – try peaches or pears or halved apricots.

Worldwide, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men aged 50 and over will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. World Osteoporosis Day on 20th October aims to raise osteoporosis awareness. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones weaken and decrease in density, increasing the likelihood of fractures. The high incidence of fractures in the over-50s is mostly due to weakened bones. Although osteoporosis can affect any bone, the wrists, hips and spine are the most commonly affected.

Who is at risk? Women are generally at greater risk than men, as falling oestrogen levels during the menopause affect bone density. Women are at even higher risk if they:

• Experience menopause or have a hysterectomy before age 45.

Older People Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is urging people aged 60 plus to think ahead to the colder winter months by offering free home energy checks. The local charity that supports older people across the county has secured some funding to offer a free advisory service which will help to make homes warmer and could save money on heating bills. Being cold can be particularly dangerous for older people with Shropshire having one of the highest death rates in the country in colder weather - every year 285 people die from cold-related causes. The local company working with Age UK STW say it’s not just about keeping warm as improved insulation can also keep us cool during the summer months. Phil Newcombe, Project Manager of Marches Energy Agency, said: “The people I visit are finding the home energy checks an interesting and enjoyable opportunity to think about how their homes work for them. This can be about keeping cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter.

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin (Age UK STW) is pleased to announce that its Diamond Drop-in group is moving to the Fire Station Exhibition Centre in Shifnal.

The group is for both carer and the person living with dementia and will build on the success of Age UK STW’s other 10 Diamond Drop-in’s across Shropshire.

Neil Brookes, Senior Co-ordinator for Dementia Services at Age UK STW, said: “The fire station is a fantastic place to hold our Diamond Drop-in because it is packed with local photographs and memorabilia and provides a very friendly and welcoming environment.

Kevin Moore, Director of Operations for the charity, said: “We have been working in partnership with Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group whose funding has made it possible to set up this new service. Living with dementia touches the lives of over 5000 people in Shropshire and the people who care for them, and we want our Diamond Drop-in to put a little sparkle back into their lives.

“Everyone enjoys reminiscing about old times and the exhibition turns this into an even more interesting experience with pictures of old sports teams and fire service artefacts.” The former fire station was refurbished in 2009 and Shifnal History Group have amassed a permanent display of Shifnal’s cultural heritage at the centre. The Diamond Drop-in will be held every month and the first session will be on Tuesday 24th October and then on the 21st November and the 19th December from 2pm-4pm. The group will provide: • A chance to get to know others and share experiences in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. • An opportunity for everyone to take part in interesting activities and have some fun. NOVEMBER IS LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Around 44,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. It’s one of the most feared, yet preventable, cancers. Lung Cancer Awareness Month aims to foster hope with news of new treatments and alleviate stigma, reminding us that lung cancer can affect anyone. Lung Cancer Causes Smoking

Smoking is responsible for 90% of all UK cases and 6 million deaths, worldwide, each year. Tobacco smoke contains 60 carcinogens and also causes breast, bowel (colorectal), blood, bladder, liver, mouth, pancreatic and stomach cancer. Cannabis also contains carcinogens.

• Severe pain in the shoulder or down the arm. • In one eye: drooping eyelid and/or a small pupil. • Loss of sweating on one side of the face.

Diagnosing Lung Cancer

Your GP will assess your general health and breathing. They may refer you for a blood test and/or X-ray. If necessary, they’ll refer you to specialist who may perform further tests including scans (ultrasound, CT or PET), a bronchoscopy and a biopsy.

Types, Stages and Treatment of Lung Cancer

The more common non-small cell lung cancer is classified in stages 1 to 4. Stage 1 is the least extensive, while Stage 4 indicates lung cancer that has spread to both lungs or other areas. Treatment depends on your health and the type, stage and position of your cancer. Treatments include:

Starting smoking when young increases lung cancer risk, but quitting reduces risk to that of a non-smoker in 15 years.

• Surgery.

Passive Smoking

• Radiotherapy.

Non-smoking women living with smoking partners are 25% more likely to develop lung cancer than those with nonsmokers. Smokers should never smoke near others or in their environment, as toxins can settle on surfaces and be re-released or form toxic compounds. It’s now illegal to smoke in a vehicle carrying under-18s.

• Chemoradiotherapy.

Environmental Toxins

Small cell lung cancer usually spreads more quickly. It’s classified as ‘limited’ if it hasn’t spread beyond one lung and nearby lymph nodes, and ‘extensive’ if it’s spread beyond this. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy is usually recommended.

These include radon, arsenic, asbestos, beryllium, cadmium, coal and coke fumes, silica, nickel, diesel fumes and high levels of nitrogen oxide (mostly from vehicles). Age and Genes About 80% of lung cancers occur in the over-60s and a family history of lung cancer may increase risk.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

If you have any of these symptoms, DO see your doctor immediately but DON’T panic; they can indicate less serious conditions. Common symptoms: • A new, persistent cough. • A long-standing cough that changes or worsens. • Persistent/frequent chest infections. • Pain or blood when coughing/breathing. • Persistent breathlessness/fatigue. • Loss or change of appetite. • Unexplained weight loss. Less common symptoms: • Finger clubbing (fingers become more curved or thicken at the fingertip). • High temperature. • Difficulty or pain when swallowing. • Wheezing. • Hoarseness. • Swelling of your face or neck. • Persistent ache or pain in the chest or shoulder. • Pins and needles/numbness in fingers/toes. • Drowsiness, weakness, dizziness and confusion. • Breast swelling in men. • Blood clots.

• Chemotherapy.

• Symptom relief. If you’re in good health and the cancer is in one lung, surgery followed by radiotherapy is often chosen. In other cases, chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy will be recommended.

Could Brexit Cloud Your Plans

TO RETIRE IN THE SUN?

When the TV programme “A Place in the Sun” launched in the year 2000, it seemed to capture a growing spirit of optimism at the start of the new millennium. International travel was becoming easier and cheaper thanks to the birth of lowcost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair, and the show’s aim was to demonstrate how simple it could be to buy a home - or a second home - in a sunny spot abroad, settle down and “live the dream”. The dream included cheap property, an affordable cost of living, straightforward travel to and from the UK and a more relaxed lifestyle in a sunny clime. The prospect of owning a place in the sun was particularly tempting for older people planning their retirement: with properties in France, Spain, Portugal and Greece available at roughly half the cost of an average family home in the UK (or in some cases, even less), retirees could downsize and use the remaining cash from the property sale to supplement their pensions. Legislation allowing the free movement of EU citizens meant that it was easier to take up residence in another country and travel freely without the need for visas, while reciprocal EU healthcare arrangements provided access to free medical treatment throughout the European community. Spain has been one of the most popular destinations for British buyers and to date it is thought that over 300,000 UK residents have made a home in Spain, while more than 600,000 have bought second homes. France is the second most popular country, with an estimated 171,000 Brits now settled there, but recently, thanks to the EU referendum, the picture has begun to change. Earlier this year a report by Spain’s Association of Land and Commercial Registrars revealed that British demand for second homes had reduced by 30% since the referendum, while estate agents on some of the more popular Greek islands reported an even sharper decline, with an estimated 80% drop in interest. It’s clear that we are becoming more cautious when it comes to investing in European property. One of the greatest concerns for prospective buyers is that the rights and benefits British citizens have previously enjoyed as a result of the UK’s membership of the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) will be withdrawn when we leave. Listed below are some of the key points of contention:

Buying a property Currently the fall in the pound is making overseas property purchases more expensive for UK buyers, but it is hoped that the pound’s value will eventually strengthen when more is known about Britain’s prospects outside the EU. While there is no doubt that Britons will continue to be able to buy property and live in an EU country after Brexit (just as non-EU and non-EU European nationals do without problems

today), there are questions as to whether property-owning Brits will be charged higher taxes on their assets. Although nothing is certain at this stage, the economic benefits UK property owners bring to less affluent areas of France, Spain and Portugal may make it less likely that EU countries will want to penalise British owners.

Travel Once we have left the European community, it’s unlikely that we will experience the same speedy passage through passport control that we once enjoyed, but the jury is out on whether you might need a visa to visit another EU country. If visas are required, spontaneous trips to the UK from your home abroad - or from Britain to your EU holiday home - could become a thing of the past, as you will need to factor in the administrative time required to process your visa when you travel.

Medical treatment At present, anyone receiving a UK state pension gets the same level of free healthcare as a local pensioner if they live in an EU country. It would be extremely costly for the NHS if, after Brexit, it had to care for everyone who currently receives treatment abroad, so it is expected that negotiators will try to keep some sort of reciprocal arrangement provided the UK remains in the EEA.

Mobile phone roaming charges The European Commission recently ruled that EU citizens (and that currently includes British mobile users) do not have to pay roaming charges if they are calling between EU countries. Although the Three network has pledged to maintain free roaming charges regardless of the Brexit outcome, other providers have not yet made the same commitment. HELPING YOUR CHILD TO CREATE STORIES

Whether they’re slaying dragons or discovering new worlds, children’s imagination knows no bounds. When it comes to creating stories with characters and plots though, it can be difficult to get started when faced with a blank page. A few props and story prompts can really help to get those creative juices flowing. Creating characters Fill a cloth bag with accessories, such as perfume and aftershave samples, a silk tie, an old pair of glasses, a toy, a brooch, a hat, a watch and other personal items. Try to avoid things that your child already associates with someone they know. Scour your local charity shops and ask friends for donations. You could also add a few fantastical items to the bag, like a pirate hat, fairy wand, bottle of witch’s potion, toy spaceship and so on. Ask your child to choose two or three items from the bag, without looking. Then ask them to create a character based around the items. Ask questions to help. What does the character look like? Are they male or female? How old are they? What do they like doing? Where do they live? And so on. Your child can then write about their character, or draw a picture of them, or both.

Creating stories If your child is struggling to think of a story, creative prompts can help them to get started. You could come up with a scenario and ask them to think about what might happen next. For example, ‘Your character finds a door hidden behind a bookcase. It’s only two feet high, so they have to crawl through it. What do they find when they do?’ Alternatively, you can write short story prompts on pieces of paper. Here’s a few to get you started: •

Fold each story prompt up so it can’t be read, and ask your child to choose one or two. They can then use the prompts as the basis for their story. Don’t be too rigid. If they don’t like the prompt, let them pick another. If they have a different idea for a story, even better!

It kept our young testers entertained for a good couple of hours, and the results have become treasured keepsakes. The kit costs £16.50 and can be bought from Amazon, Hobbycraft and independent arts and craft shops. If your child needs a bit of motivation, they could enter a competition. Libraries and literacy organisations often organise or advertise children’s creative writing competitions, as do Writing Times (www.writingtimes.co.uk), Young Writers (www.youngwriters.co.uk) and Families magazine (www. familiesonline.co.uk).

so skinny you’d struggle to get through them if you were carrying anything heavy or bulky. If possible choose one wide enough for you to push a wheelbarrow through with ease – this will make jobs such as changing the border soil or just bringing in compost so much easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. The choice needs to be made at the outset, and your supplier will be able to advise on what is best for the greenhouse you choose. I prefer to have a solid path up the centre of the greenhouse (essential for practicality) and then an open bed up one or both sides. The advantage of a bed is that you can fill it full of quality soil and plant directly into it, making maintenance of crops such as tomatoes an awful lot easier. A solid base means you will need to grow greenhouse crops in containers.

If you can possibly squeeze a greenhouse in to your garden, it’ll be a purchase you won’t regret. A greenhouse will literally transform your gardening activities and open up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you get and where should you put it? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees. These not only make for shady conditions that will reduce light getting to the plants inside the greenhouse, but falling branches or other tree debris also increase the risk of damage to the glass as well as the guttering becoming clogged. If you are going to want to install electrical equipment such as heating, lighting or even some electrically heated propagators, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the house or other existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. So what size should you go for? The answer is simple, larger than you might expect! Pretty well whatever the size of greenhouse you get, you can be sure you will eventually wish it was larger. Most of the initial costs rise by a relatively small amount as the size of the greenhouse increases, so save up a little longer if necessary. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if space or budget only allow for a 4ft x 4ft, then still go for it!

When you’re placing the order, try to get some greenhouse staging in your greenhouse. This is usually made from wood or metal and is slatted, making a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass but there are other options; if the garden is used by children, you may decide to do as I did and install safety glass or reinforced glass to reduce the risk of a tragic accident – especially likely at the base of the greenhouse. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’ are also available from some outlets; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they are designed to last, and think about how they will look too. If possible consider some really useful extras, including: shading (necessary to help to keep temperatures down in the sunnier months and to reduce the risk of plant damage); guttering and a linked in water-butt (a brilliant way to have a handy water supply without elaborate plumbing, and the green option too); and an electrical supply (expensive and must be installed by a properly qualified and registered electrician, but allows electrical heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator). Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (most commonly aluminium). Which you choose will really depend on personal preference: many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a wind-prone area.

You will be able to raise a lot of plants from seed yourself, so saving money.

•

It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight.

•

Plants get plenty of natural light and so are more likely to thrive.

In the height of summer a greenhouse will soon heat up, and temperatures can rise to the extent that plants will be damaged or even killed. Plenty of ventilation helps to reduce the temperature and also allows for better air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases etc. Consider roof vents as well, which aid air circulation and are an especially efficient way to let excess heat escape.

Join the residents of Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge as they celebrate Halloween in traditional style during the autumn half-term, 21st - 29th October. The Victorians marked All Hallows Eve with some curious customs and unusual rituals such as carving turnips (rather than the modern day pumpkins) into Jack-olanterns to frighten away evil spirits. Visitors can play light-hearted divination and fortune telling games with the townsfolk in their cottages, follow a trail around the historic streets to discover more about Victorian Halloween traditions and ‘meet’ Sweeny Todd, the demon barber who will be looking for more victims to dispatch. In Victorian England, Halloween was marked by the popular practice of ‘souling’, when children, and sometimes poor adults, would dress up and go

around door-to-door offering prayers and songs in exchange for Soul Cakes, paving the way for our Trick or Treat custom. A selection of these simple round spiced cakes, which were often marked with a cross, will be on sale in the Town’s bakery. Every day between 12 noon and 3pm (apart from Sunday, 29th October), everyone is invited to take part in the national Big Draw Festival to create spooky scenes of the Town using the Victorian pointillist painting technique, but with modern spray paint. With this method hundreds of dots of pure colour are applied to a picture; rather than mixing colours on a palette it relies on the eye of the painter to mix the colours. The completed scenes will be displayed at Ghostly Gaslight on Saturday evening, 28th October. One of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Blists Hill is open 10am to 4pm, apart from 28th October when it closes at 3pm to prepare for the Ghostly Gaslight evening event. A DRESSING ROOM

The Modernist architect Le Corbusier (a man who knew a thing or two about designing buildings) advised readers of his collected essays: “Never undress in your bedroom. It is not a clean thing to do and makes the room horribly untidy.” Clearly, this was a man who was strongly in favour of separate dressing rooms. Move on almost 100 years or so and, while most of us don’t really feel that it’s unhygienic to take our clothes off in the bedroom, many of us do yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes in good order, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, as large and luxurious as you like, containing not just clothes storage but also room for a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, perhaps in an apartment or older property, you may find that it is more efficient to turn a small room, part of a large landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? The most effective way to work it out is simply to get out your tape and measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space and drawers. Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-to-reach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To turn your space from a walk-in wardrobe to a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist and choose from one of their ranges; or use off-the-shelf elements, readily available from DIY sheds or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. The latter option, though undeniably the cheapest, has the disadvantage of being less flexible and, because all the parts will be made to standard measurements, may not make the best use of your space, particularly if it is awkwardly shaped. It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. Wall fittings, dangling pendants and floor lamps may be in the way, so inset ceiling spotlights are often the best option. Ensure

And if you decide to screen off your clothes with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors. While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, openfronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. In an ideal world, you would match the style of the dressing room to that of your bedroom, picking out colours, finishes and details such as drawer handles and light switches to blend seamlessly from one room to the other.

CREATING A DRESSING ROOM AREA IN A BEDROOM If you don’t have enough space to build a dedicated dressing room, consider sectioning off one end of the bedroom to act as a storage/dressing area. You could simply use a curtain or screen to separate the spaces or, more permanently, build a false wall to act as a headboard and, on the other side, a wardrobe. Make the wall as high as the hanging space needed for your longest clothes, but stop it short of the ceiling to increase the sense of space and light in the room. As with any space-saving storage requirements, ensure that any fitted furniture makes use of the full height and width available, and look out for clever fittings such as corner carousels, pull-down hangers and tilting laundry baskets.

Patagonia

In the southernmost reaches of the American continent, Patagonia is divided between two countries. To the west Chile owns a mere 25%, while Argentina to the east claims the remainder. Between them rise the Andes, but in the ancient land of the ‘big feet’, so called by early explorers, the beautiful Patagonian lakes have no borders. A thousand kilometres south of Santiago de Chile, Puerto Varas sits on the bank of Llanquihue, meaning ‘blue water’ in the local Mapuche language. Protected from the Pacific by a mere strip of land, it is the most popular and second largest lake in Chile. It opens out like a fan, looking across to mighty volcanoes where snowy tops barely disguise the danger. At over 2,600 metres, Osorno has been dormant for almost 150 years but its neighbour Cabulco erupted in 2015 with hardly any warning at all. Yet on the southern shore, the pretty resort of Puerto Varas is as relaxed as ever, sprinkled with alpine chalets, manicured lawns and flower gardens, hence the name ‘City of Roses’. From the cuisine to the architecture, there is much German influence around, reflecting the ‘selective immigration’ of the 19th century designed to boost development. Below the lush meadows where the red-topped church spires rise, dark sands glisten along the lakeside promenade and after dark, garlands of lights twinkle around the bay. Here you can kayak, trek, ski in winter or explore the Perez Rosales National Park, home to the Petrohué waterfalls, exotic birds and over 100 species of trees. Puerto Varas is the departure point for the scenic boat-bus crossing of the Andes to San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina,

taking in a string of lakes. Most visitors overnight in Peulla, a magical sort of place by a tiny remote lake, before facing every type of weather the Andes can conjure up in 48 hours. At 893 metres, on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, San Carlos de Bariloche owes its name to ‘the people behind the mountains’, hidden for centuries from missionaries and conquistadors. Today visitors come from afar to ski on Cerro Catedral’s slopes, trek in the forests of the National Park or sunbathe on the beach. Swimming in the glacial waters is not recommended. The lake is up to 157 metres deep, measures 357km around, has seven branches connecting it to other lakes and its own monster, Nahuelito, discovered in the early 1900s but long known to aborigines. It is rich in trout and salmon, attracts kelp gulls and blue-eyed cormorants and is the source of the Limay river. Wooden chalets and stylish villas doze on the shore while downtown, myriad chocolate shops beckon along the high street where brightly-clad women shelter under the arcades, knitting ponchos and woolly hats. The church boasts over 45 stained glass windows and on the quaint clock tower, traditional Patagonian figures come out twice a day to strike the hours. But when the sun is shining, the unmissable attraction is the 360° panorama from Cerro Otto, at 1,405 metres. A cable car glides silently to the summit’s breathtaking view, stretching from the toy-like town below to the vast expanse of Nahuel Huapi, the islands, the neighbouring lakes and the rugged hills and mountains all around. It’s cold and windy on the top but the revolving restaurant welcomes you with hot food and drinks at reasonable prices and the most stunning views of Patagonia’s Lake District.

High-Tec Horrors WHEN YOUR GADGETS GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT Some of the scariest things don’t make very good costumes: nobody’s going to go to a fancy dress party as The Laptop Full Of Orange Juice, The Stolen Smartphone or The Family Photos That Got Deleted By Accident. But unfortunately such horrors do exist. How can you ensure that they don’t give you nightmares? The first step to avoid any kind of digital disaster is to have backups of anything important. You can do that in several ways: you can copy files to an external hard disk; you can upload them to an online service such as Microsoft OneDrive or Yahoo’s Flickr; or you can backup to CD-R or DVD. That latter option is the least safe, though, because discs can easily be lost or damaged. We prefer the online option, as it ensures our backups are kept far, far away in the event of emergency.

Keeping up-to-date backups means that even if your hardware suffers a horrible fate, your important files - your family photos, perhaps, or the book you’re secretly writing - don’t go with it. If your device is lost or stolen there are a few things you can try. Apple and Android phones and tablets have a “find my device” option - for Apple it’s Find My Phone in iCloud, and in Android it’s google.com/android/find. The latter even includes Android TVs, if you have one. You can use the services to make the device play a sound if you think you’ve just put it somewhere nearby or to display a message urging the finder to call, but you can also use them to lock the device and erase all the data on it, rendering it useless to any thief or to anyone who finds it.

One of the most common digital disasters is water damage: a drink spilled on a laptop, or a smartphone dropped in liquid. If that happens to you, stop immediately - and we mean immediately, because every second counts - and turn it off; if it’s a laptop, turn it upside down so the keyboard is facing downwards and the liquid can drip out. Wipe any wet surfaces, unplug every cable and leave it on top of a towel for at least 24 hours in a warm, dry place. Don’t try to fast-forward by using a hair dryer, as its heat can damage delicate components. When you’re absolutely sure it’s dry turn it back on and look for signs of weird behaviour: if it doesn’t work properly, you’ll need to take it to a repair shop. With phones the process is much the same, but you might get better results if you put the phone in a bag of uncooked rice. Rice is ultra-absorbent and can help dry your phone out more quickly. As for our final horror, accidentally deleted files, you can get them back if you move quickly. That’s because when you trash a file it doesn’t actually get deleted; instead, it’s marked as “okay to overwrite”. If you can get to it before it’s overwritten you can usually get it back, even if you’ve emptied the recycle bin. Our go-to app for recovering files is Recuva (www.recuva.com), which works on Windows, on camera memory cards and on USB sticks too. There’s a free version for simple recovery jobs.

45TH ANNIVERSARY

Award winning musical society TADLOP (Telford and District Light Operatic Players), are preparing to bring the wild west to Telford for their 45th anniversary and their 85th production, Oklahoma!

The office of the Local Government Ombudsman has found no fault with the decision making process to change Muxton Schools' Catchment area. This is disappointing news as the views of parents have been ignored, and a compromise solution rejected. I have grave concerns regarding the proposed safe route to Telford Priory School and will be raising these issues with Council officers.

TADLOP was formed in 1972 at Shirlee Gaston’s Dance school by a dozen parents of some of the pupils and other like-minded people. At that time, the district (rapidly becoming Telford) lacked an organisation to perform light opera and musicals. What was needed was a Society to bring a little “West End” theatre to the area. Within two weeks an organisation was formed and almost 50 people had expressed an interest in being involved in putting on the very first show “Calamity Jane”.

Congratulations to Phil Loughlin on being elected to Donnington and Muxton Parish Council at the recent by-election. The timing of the election has delayed the petition to start the process of establishing a separate Parish Council for Muxton.

“Over the years we have produced a huge variety of different shows from Gilbert and Sullivan to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and some more contemporary and modern pieces.” Says publicity manager Lyndsey Bird “TADLOP last visited the wild west back in 2012 with our production of “Calamity Jane” and so for our 45th anniversary it made sense to take a trip back to the land of cowboys once more and bring Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! to the stage.”

World Space Week

4TH TO 10TH OCTOBER duration, human-rated deep space exploration. Orion is intended to transport up to six astronauts to destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as asteroids, the moon and eventually Mars, and return them safely to Earth. It can withstand re-entry speeds of over 20,000 miles per hour. It will enable NASA to extend sustainable, affordable human and robotic exploration across the solar system, developing innovative technology and infrastructure to take space exploration even farther.

Space X: Planning for Our Move to Mars Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft “with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.”

The UN founded World Space Week in 1999 to celebrate “the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.” It’s now the largest space event in the world, with 86 countries holding 2,700 events last year. This year’s theme is ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’, and here we look at four major projects the Week will highlight.

New Horizons: Pushing the Boundaries The New Horizons spacecraft was launched on 19th January 2006, beginning NASA’s first mission to reconnoitre Pluto and venture into the distant Kuiper Belt. It conducted a six-month-long reconnaissance of the dwarf planet Pluto and its moons in summer 2015. With NASA approval, the spacecraft will head further into the vast Kuiper Belt, where it will study another of the ancient, tiny worlds, over a billion miles beyond Neptune’s orbit. The mission will provide information about the surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres of these bodies and how ‘ice dwarfs’, like Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, evolved. It may also tell us more about four previously unknown moons of Pluto - Nix, Hydra, Styx and Kerberos – which were discovered using the Hubble Telescope.

The Orion: Human-Rated Deep Space Exploration

In 2010, it became the only private company ever to return a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, and in 2012 made history again when its Dragon spacecraft took cargo to and from the International Space Station. It now runs regular NASA resupply missions and will be transporting crew to the ISS as early as 2018. SpaceX is currently developing the Falcon Heavy, the world’s most powerful rocket, and working on fully and rapidly reusable rockets, which will make space exploration more affordable and reliable. This year it successfully achieved the first reflight of an orbital class rocket.

Planetary Resources: Unlocking the Solar System’s Economy The vision of Planetary Resources is “to expand the economy into space.” The company focuses on developing technology to mine near-Earth X-type asteroids (rich in precious metals) and extract water from C-type asteroids. To this end, they’re developing prospector craft capable of surveying asteroids for prolonged periods and then impacting or landing on them to take measurements. The Arkyd 3 deployed into low-Earth orbit from the ISS in July 2015 and successfully tested its core prospecting capabilities. Arkyd 6 is scheduled to launch this year to test increased prospecting and space-based observation technologies. Before mining precious metals, Planetary Resources intends to produce fuel in space from water-rich carbonaceous chondrites that can be broken down into highly efficient LOX/ H2 rocket fuel.
