FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

White Hart

The Wharfage, Ironbridge TF8 7AW

T: 01952 432901

The White Hart is a popular Bistro and Café Bar located on the picturesque Ironbridge Wharfage, a stones throw from the leafy banks of the River Severn and the historic iron bridge. The White Hart is a popular Bistro and Café Bar located on the picturesque Ironbridge Wharfage, a stones throw from the leafy banks of the River Severn and the historic Iron Bridge. A short walk from the waterfront through the large courtyard terrace takes you to the main entrance, inside the sensitively renovated interior is warm and welcoming with a relaxed classical elegance, retaining echo’s of this 18th century Inn’s historic past. The well stocked bar takes centre stage, to the right is a relaxed lounge area complete with feature fireplace and comfy leather armchairs. To the left of the bar is a delightful bistro style dining area, which comfortably seats around 70 diners with a mix of intimate tables for cosy private meals and open areas that are perfect for larger groups. An exciting new addition to the White Hart family is the Number 9 café, which is located to the right hand side of the courtyard, and again offers lovely views over the waterfront. This newly renovated bright and bijoux café is open from 9am till 5pm and offers a selection of light breakfast options (served between 9am - 11am) and a full lunch menu (served between 11am and 5pm) including a wide choice of soups, sandwiches and tapas, a range of hot and cold drinks and a tempting selection of cakes. We visited the White Hart on a weekday lunchtime to sample the Bistro lunch menu; the Bistro offers both a set lunch menu, with the choice of either two or three courses and a wide choice of individual dishes, with options to suit all tastes and appetites.

8

On arrival we were shown to a lovely corner table and were served a large bottle of chilled water and a selection of fresh warm bread and butter to enjoy whilst we perused the menu. To start we opted to share the Ham Hock Terrine, with Sauce Gribiche and Sourdough Toast (£6.50). The starter arrived quickly and was attractively presented, the ham hock terrine had a nice chunky texture with a delicious salty yet sweet flavour, the sauce gribiche was the perfect accompaniment adding depth and flavour to the dish and the sour dough toast was perfectly fresh and fluffy.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT For main course I went for the Home Made Fish Finger Ciabatta, Tartare Sauce and Fries (£6.50) and following a glowing recommendation from our friendly waiter my Mom opted for the Sirloin steak (£18). The steak came served with chunky hand cut chips, roasted tomato, and a wedge of crunchy baby gem lettuce with blue cheese dressing. Mom thoroughly enjoyed the steak, commenting that it was perfectly cooked and meltingly tender, the hand cut chips were chunky and crisp on the outside and hot and fluffy on the inside, perfect! My fish finger ciabatta was tasty and filling and made the perfect lunchtime treat, the fish fingers were tender and flaky with a golden crunchy coating, served on a soft fresh ciabatta with tangy tartare sauce and crisp lettuce. They came with a dressed mixed leaf salad a side of coleslaw and a basket of skinny fries, this simple rustic dish was delicious and perfectly executed, so much so that I’ll definitely be returning for another one soon! Ordinarily I would refrain from indulging in dessert at lunchtime, but in the interest of providing a full and in-depth review, I quickly opted for the Chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream (£6) and Mom chose the sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream (£6). Well after the first bite I knew I had made the right decision, the chocolate brownie was dense and gooey, drizzled with a rich warm chocolate sauce, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream adding a cool freshness to the dish, it was a really lovely ending to a fabulous lunch. Mom’s sticky toffee pudding was equally indulgent and satisfying, with a delicious toffee sauce poured over a slice of moorish sponge and a scoop of creamy vanilla ice-cream to cut through the sweetness. The White Hart already has a great reputation in the area as a dinner destination but today opened my eyes to what a great lunchtime venue it is too… fancy a quick sandwich and a coffee? Number 9 café has got it covered! Prefer a long lazy lunch over a glass of wine? The White Hart Bistro offers that and more. I can definitely see myself spending several lunchtimes enjoying a delicious meal whilst watching the world and the river go by at the White Hart this summer.

Shropshire Gin Only launched at the end of February, Tiger Gin from the Shropshire Gin Company has been named one of the world’s best gins, having picked up a Silver Award at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC). Now in its 21st year, the ISC is the premier event in promoting outstanding quality spirits. More than 1,300 entries from nearly 70 countries worldwide make it a truly global competition. However, scooping an award is not easy with each spirit put through a rigorous blind tasting process by an experienced panel of specialist judges.

GAINS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

Last month the company launched its ‘Tiger Cubs’, a 5cl miniature, which can be purchased in person or online from local spirits specialist Moonshine and Fuggles in Ironbridge. JJ now has ambitious plans to expand the Tiger Gin empire across the UK and beyond. For more information visit the Tiger Gin website at www.tigergin.co.uk

Pictured below: Darren Wall and Martin Waite

Owner JJ Lawrence said: “Being recognised as one of the world’s best gins so soon after launch is fantastic. Our aim when we started working with one on the countries most respected master distillers was to create the ‘world’s best tasting gin’ and this award goes a long way to proving we have done just that.” The award is the latest success for the brand, which has already amassed a following of over 20,000 people on social media and is now stocked by over 100 local bars, restaurants and other outlets. It’s also caught the attention of online retailers and the product has been shipped to destinations worldwide including Italy and the US.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT

Summer menu is here... With summer just around the corner and our first anniversary approaching, positive change is on the menu at The Orchard!

Summer offers us foodies such a great opportunity for a wealth of flavours and colour after the more austere month’s just past, with fresh vegetables from the garden and lovely herbs to flavour every dish. Starters will be including some old favourites such as our creamy goats cheesecake with red onion jam and savoury ouefs coquette in Parma ham, along with some new fish options and a summer twist on our home made pate. Mains will also include favourites such as our local butcher’s steaks and our signature Orchard chicken as well as some inspirations from the Mediterranean. Desserts centred around the wealth of summer fruits will be combining tingling tartness with sweet highlights, and of course no summer would be complete without gorgeous ice cream Sundaes made from dairy cream and suitable for most special diets.

In addition the new summer menu will feature some midweek specials available on Wednesdays and Thursdays for those looking for a quick bite after work or those wishing to enjoy a lighter option in the garden. We are also looking at holding some live music evenings in the garden so watch us on social media for updates and news. Finally even though the weather is warmer you still can’t beat a good Sunday lunch so our fixed price three course menu will continue to be offered between 12.00 and 4.00pm every Sunday. So whatever your dining requirements, be it a quick after work supper to a more formal celebration meal, do come and visit us at The Orchard. We have every occasion covered! Recipe

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE BROWNIES Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert!

Ready in 1 hour 30 mins (plus cooling and chilling)

Makes 12 1.

INGREDIENTS: BROWNIE BASE • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour MOUSSE TOPPING • 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate

Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/Gas 4. Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2. Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. 3. Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin. 4. To make the mousse topping, melt the milk chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk. 5. Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

TIP Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour.

The Greater Outdoors

GADGETS THAT MAKE SUMMER SIZZLE

Let’s be optimistic and pray for a long hot summer. What gadgets can help your summer really sizzle? From making parties more entertaining to ensuring your barbecued food is full of flavour and not food poisoning, gadgets are here to help you make the most of every second of summer. One of the big trends this year is solar power - not because Britain has suddenly got sunnier, but because the combination of more efficient solar technology and low-power technology such as LED lights means solar gadgets work properly, even when it’s a bit dull. You’ll have seen endless solar lights and spotlights, but how about solar-powered water fountains, bird baths or other water features? You can spend from around £50 to several hundred pounds depending on how complex the feature is and what it’s made of: cheap ones tend to be made of resin, while natural stone takes you into the hundreds. Solar power is also very good for charging phones, which is handy if you’ve embraced streaming music and use your smartphone to play sounds in the garden. It pays to shop around: for example the PowerBee Executive charger, which has an RRP of £39.99, is widely available for as little as £13.99. While you’re at it, you could buy yourself a solar powered wireless speaker too: the Gemtune Kinna speaker is £40, while the larger and longer range Jabadoo wireless outdoor solar speaker is £99. Even if you don’t go solar, a wireless speaker is an excellent investment for summertime sounds, as it means you don’t need to keep your music close to a power point. For many of us summer means outdoor cooking, and of course there are plenty of products designed just for us. The Looftlighter (£48) and BBQ Dragon (£46) use super-heated air to get your barbecue started quickly, while the iGrill Mini (£43) is a Bluetooth thermometer that tells your phone when your food is ready. If money’s no object, the SmartGrill offers voice control, recipe apps and notifications on your phone or tablet. The bad news: the smallest one is around £1,400 and the most expensive model, the 42-inch, is nearly £7,000. Gadgets aren’t just about grilling, and they don’t all require a second mortgage either. Automatic wine coolers cost from around £50 and can chill a bottle of white wine in less than 10 minutes, while the lower-tech bottle wraps sit in the fridge until you need them, chill bottles in around 15 minutes and cost £9.99. Beer drinkers can join in too: the Xcellent Global Beer Chiller Chilling Sticks, stainless steel rods you freeze and then stick in your beer bottles, are £9.99 for two. The chillers work in some soft drink bottles too. We started off with optimism, but let’s add some realism too: the British weather being what it is, it’s a good idea to have early warning of incoming bad weather. An outdoor weather station provides just that, and you can choose from traditional clock designs with integrated barometers and thermometers from around £25 or go high-tech with a wireless weather station, which can cost from around £25 to several hundred pounds depending on the features you want to have. Or you could always go on Amazon and buy the Amscan PPP GB Umbrella Hat, which offers the protection of an umbrella with the hands-free convenience of a hat for just £2.99.

The Grass Can be Greener

superb but will take an awful lot more maintenance and be a good deal less hardwearing. Spending that little bit extra usually pays - cheaper turf often contains weeds and sometimes pests or diseases, or simply does not contain a good grass mixture in the first place. Always buy the turf or arrange to have it delivered just when you need it, as storage never does it any good. If you do need to store it however, you can usually do this for a couple of days. The turves can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer than this unroll as soon as they are delivered and lay them out flat, grass side upwards, preferably on paving or plastic sheeting. Make sure that you keep them regularly watered and lay them as soon as possible.

Laying the turf It’s the time of year when things are starting to look lush and green, and beds and borders are beginning to come into their own. But does your lawn spoil it all by looking like a rather motheaten patchwork quilt? Or maybe you don’t have a lawn but think it would be great to possess one of those beautiful green surfaces in the centre of your garden? Whether you have decided your old lawn is well past its best or you want to create one from scratch, it is the perfect time to get started, and turf should still be available from specialist suppliers or garden centres.

Preparing the site If you want a new lawn, it is essential to get the site properly prepared. It takes time and effort, but every moment you spend is well worthwhile. Start by removing all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass or lawn, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. If the area is really weed infested or covered with old lawn, then most people opt to kill this off with a weedkiller based on glyphosate. Then, once all the plant matter has died off, you can strip it away or dig it in. On sandy soils, incorporate some organic matter to improve moisture retention, while on very heavy soils it is often worth digging in grit and organic matter to improve drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly - walking over the site with fairly flat-soled boots is all you need to do. Once done, rake thoroughly with a garden rake and remove any stones or other debris which comes to the surface. Gently tread down the area again if raking makes it uneven.

Buying turf Always choose a reputable supplier and make sure that the turf you buy is suitable for the use you have in mind – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher than others, while some contain a seed mixture especially put together to make it suitable for use in shade. Others produce a ‘bowling green’ effect, which may look

16

It is essential that you lay your turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. Make sure that the joins on each row are staggered (like bricks in a wall), as this will give an even finish. Starting at one side, lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line which you can work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge of one abuts onto its neighbour. Lay the next row of turves, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the previous row. To avoid damaging the first row lay a plank over it which you can kneel on to lay the second row. Continue like this over the whole area until your new lawn is in position. Of course no lawn is ever exactly the right size to fit the turf length, so if you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end, as this will make it less likely to be dislodged or to dry out. If you want a curved edge to your lawn, lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and then cut them to shape using a half moon edger or a sharp border spade. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink in then carefully lift them and place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, taking care to ensure that any tiny gaps between the turves are filled in.

Care and maintenance As soon as the turf is in position, gently water it using a sprinkler, ensuring that this first watering allows the water to penetrate right down to the root level. If it doesn’t rain frequently then you will need to water your lawn on a regular basis, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots are getting established. In the meantime try to avoid walking on it too much and in no time at all you will have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of.

Gadgets

TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN GROW

Great gadgets for the green fingered With the worst of the weather hopefully behind us, it’s time to turn to the great outdoors - and for many of us that means getting our gardens and hedges in shape. Technology can’t quite do the weeding or clipping for us just yet, but it can help in lots of other ways - including solving garden mysteries. If you’ve ever suspected that pets or other creatures have been damaging your plants, the TLC200 Green Camera is a weatherproof time lapse camera that’s designed to monitor your most precious plants and show you any skulduggery. At £139 it’s not cheap, but then neither are exotic plants that you might want to protect.

collection bag, automatically storing and mulching the clippings instead of throwing them all over the path. You’re going to feel a bit silly using it but the reward is a relatively mess-free finish, although it’s worth pointing out that at 7Kg plus the weight of the cuttings bag it’s quite heavy for protracted use. There is a smaller version, the Garden Groom Midi, which is £59.99 and weighs 2.7Kg.

As battery technology continues to improve, tool companies are coming up with ever more useful cordless devices for garden use. Bosch’s Isio Cordless Shrub/Grass Shear (£36) is a great example: it’s a rechargeable clipper for shrubs, hedges and grass, and there’s also an optional extension handle that means you can use it without bending down, and a sprayer tank that turns the device into a spray for pesticides or fertiliser. You can get all kinds of cordless garden tools now, ranging from hand-held clippers to enormous and faintly frightening tree limb loppers, but look for Lithium Ion battery packs, not the vastly inferior and less efficient Nickel Cadmium (NiCD). We’ve been hearing about robot lawn mowers for years now, but every time we’ve looked at them we’ve been put off by the enormous price tags of around £2,000. That’s changing, and it’s now possible to get a decent sized robot lawnmower for around £800. At the time of writing the Worx WG790E is £774 (the RRP is £899) and the Flymo Robotic Lawnmower is £835 (£998 RRP). The Flymo has a working area of 400 square metres and cuts 30 square metres per hour, and because it’s virtually silent you can get it to do its stuff when everybody’s asleep - and its anti-theft system means you don’t need to worry that somebody will steal it while you’re in bed. It’s not completely autonomous - you need to fit a wire to show it the garden’s boundary, or it’ll get lost - but it’s starting to look like an attractive way to keep your lawn in great condition. While we’re on the subject of robots, if you’re thinking of investing in a leaf blower it might be worth considering a drone instead: a number of YouTube clips show drones’ propellers quickly clearing leaves from driveways, and while drones are more expensive than leaf blowers (from a few hundred pounds for a good one compared to around £30 for a blower), you can’t use a leaf blower as a mobile camera or fun toy when you’ve finished tidying your garden. One way to avoid cleaning up leaves is to prevent them from landing in the first place. Say hello to the Garden Groom Pro, which has clearly been inspired by those home haircut devices you see in catalogues: it’s a £99 hedge trimmer with its own

Outdoor Living where different types of flooring can differentiate, say, a kitchen from a dining room, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify a few stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences (dull ones can be changed fairly easily, or painted a bright colour for va va voom), hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path, for example, entwined with fragrant honeysuckle, would make a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can provide a link between two different areas of the garden as well as offering a shaded spot in which to sit.

Longer days and (fingers crossed) lots of sunshine mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing. The days of formal, look-but-don’t-touch gardens, with manicured lawns and ranks of ordered flowers in borders are – most would say thankfully – long gone. Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; in other words, they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family.

Finally, furniture. Take the indoors outside with waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. Meanwhile, if space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away when necessary, or consider building seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat, for example, and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. Armed with some basic design principles, the time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the sunshine day after day (we live in hope). And who knows, your efforts may also provide a long-term return. Creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion, and turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may even add value to your property.

by Katherine Sorrell

It sounds wonderful, but if your garden is in need of an update, just how do you go about achieving this magical blend of practical and pretty? The secret, of course, is in the planning. Look at the bigger picture first. How will you use the space and what do you want from it? To begin with, sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, whose training and experience means they will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of yourself. In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids would be the ideal spot for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best set closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or perhaps even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest to a garden and are easier to deal with than slopes – but if you are carrying a tray out from the house, it’s best to avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too, dramatically affecting both how your garden looks and also how it feels underfoot. Will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement the flooring in your kitchen for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors,

Tackling Troublesome Weeds Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • •.Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. • So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. • Remove your weeds before they set seed. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and

24

dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden.

Books

FOR DAD

Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy.

Conspiracy – Iain Gale

Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver

Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Well-researched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape.

Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mobenforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.

50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply.

The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it.

26

The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine.

More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

Beauty

A TOUCH OF INDULGENCE

Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy. I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in.

Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29,

has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up,

and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty

Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one essentials at the moment is

is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals

that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels dried out by central heating or air-conditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft.

Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but

The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away

dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day.

new Joli Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50,

Clarins’

are a real

treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare, so I do love a product

Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As that makes it easier.

implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it. Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own anti-ageing Hyaluronic Acid. The mask helps to tighten, lift and plump skin, so you look fresher-faced in the morning, even if the kids/dog/partner woke you up several times in the night.

New Country Homes Department One of Shropshire’s longest-established estate agents is expanding its service by launching a department specialising in country homes.

“We are therefore best placed to advise on all matters relating to your property, whether it be with regards to the best way to present and sell your home, to advising on planning legislation and landlord and tenant law.

The new team at Nock Deighton has specific expertise in country properties, including planning and development issues, and has been introduced to meet a rise in demand from buyers.

Which Type of ISA Individual Savings Accounts were first introduced in 1999. They provided exemption from income tax and capital gains tax, and quickly became a popular place to save and invest. Back then, it was a straightforward choice between a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares equivalent, but with seven different types of Individual Savings Account now available, making the right choice is much more complicated. So how do you know which ISA is best for you, and even whether you’re eligible to apply? We take a look at the different ISA accounts available, to identify which ones might suit your needs.

Instant Access Cash ISA A straightforward tax-free savings account offered by banks and building societies - interest rates have fallen considerably in recent years, but it’s also a risk-free way to put your money to one side. You get instant access to your savings, and need to be at least 16 years of age to open this account.

Stocks and Shares ISA Stocks and Shares ISAs are open to anyone aged 18 or over. The money is divided between various investment products, including company shares, government and corporate bonds, and unit trusts. Although as an investment there’s greater risk with a Stocks and Shares ISA, you can control your exposure to it by splitting your annual allowance between this and a Cash ISA.

Junior ISA Parents can save for their children in a Junior ISA. It’s open to children under the age of 18, but the child can only open an account if they are aged 16 or over. The annual allowance currently stands at £4,080, but a child between the ages of 16 and 18 can also open an adult ISA, which boosts their saving capacity. For a child under the age of 16, the account must be opened by a parent or legal guardian, but there are no restrictions on who can pay money in once it’s open.

Help to Buy ISA A fairly recent addition to the ISA family, the Help to Buy ISA was introduced in December 2015 in an attempt to boost the first-time buyer market. For every £4 saved, the government has pledged to add a £1 bonus (up to a maximum of £3,000), making it a great way to save for a deposit on a first property. There are limits on how much you can save each month, however, so it’s a good idea to start saving early. You can put away a maximum of £200 a month into a Help to Buy ISA, as well as a lump sum of up to £1,000 when the account is opened.

38

IS BEST FOR YOU?

You’ll receive the bonus when your property purchase is complete, and as couples are entitled to have a Help to Buy ISA each, there’s the potential to receive an extra £6,000 from the government.

Inheritance ISA To avoid having to pay tax on a deceased partner’s ISA savings, the Chancellor introduced the facility to inherit tax-free from December 2014. From the date of a spouse’s death, the surviving partner is granted an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) for the total amount in the account, and has three years in which to use it. Once an APS application form has been completed, they can open an account in their own name and the money will be transferred across.

Lifetime ISA The Lifetime ISA will be introduced from 2017, and is for people between the ages of 18 and 39. A 25% bonus from the government is available, so for every £4 saved they will put in £1 up to a maximum of £1,000. If money is withdrawn for anything other than a house purchase, you’ll be charged 5% on the amount taken out and lose the government bonus. It can be used towards the purchase of a house up to the value of £450,000, otherwise you need to keep the money in the account until the age of 60 to avoid the penalty. Additionally, the account needs to be open for a minimum period of a year to qualify for the government top-up. You can hold a Lifetime ISA and a Help to Buy ISA at the same time, but are only eligible to receive the bonus on one of them.

Innovative Finance ISA This is seen to be a riskier choice for investors, but one that potentially brings higher returns. One of the risks is that your money won’t be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme because the banks are not involved. You place your money with peer-to-peer lending platforms, which could attract a higher rate of interest than with Cash or Stocks and Shares ISAs. At the time of writing, however, there are only eight such online lenders offering this type of ISA. The ISA limit for the 2016/17 tax year is £15,240, rising to £20,000 in 2017/18, and the savings year runs from 6th April to the following 5th April. Each type of ISA has its own pros and cons, and it’s worth remembering that unless you opt for a fixed rate ISA, interest rates can fluctuate widely throughout the year. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/saving/article-3505692/Theseven-different-types-offer-choose-one-you.html http://www.moneywise.co.uk/banking-saving/savings-accounts-isas/ how-to-inherit-isa http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/mortgageshome/article-3520497/ From-new-Lifetime-Isa-shared-ownership-banish-time-buyer-blues. html

Do You Ever Sing I always sang in the shower and I often thought of joining a choir but I was certain they wouldn’t all fit in my bathroom so I took what I thought was the brave step of going along to a rehearsal to find out what it was like. Like most people, at first I was nervous and self-conscious but someone said to me “don’t think about what you’re doing, think about why you are doing it”. Of course we were all there doing it because we love singing, we love music and we all come to thrive on the camaraderie associated with any likeminded group.

IN THE SHOWER?

new friends, gone to some fantastic places, laughed more than I could possibly imagine, whilst at the same time being part of something that gives so much pleasure to so many people. Shifnal & District Male Voice Choir have been spreading happiness with song and laughter for nearly sixty years, why not come along and spend a night with us. Rehearsals are on Thursday, contact Steve for the venue details. 07854 232965 or statbeads@hotmail.com, don’t be afraid.

Then comes the first concert, when the nerves are jingling, but within seconds of the first few bars you realise that the audience are all on your side, they too love music, they too love singing, why else would they be there if not. You relax and find yourself enjoying every minute of the performance, which flies by with exhilaration. Add this to the thought that not only are you helping to raise money for worthwhile causes but you are participating in a very healthy pastime. Well, at least until you get to the pub afterwards. I don’t think there is a down side to joining a choir. You don’t have to read music, if I hadn’t joined I would still be sitting watching the usual drivel on TV, I wouldn’t have made lots of

PETS:

You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been.

TOILET TRAINING A PUPPY How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent. Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/12/2015/advice/dogtraining-how-to-toilet-train-puppy-housetraining/

ARE NOT Lasting Powers JUST FOR of Attorney THE ELDERLY Many people recognise the importance of making a Will but do not realise the significance of making Lasting Powers of Attorney. Have you considered what would happen if you lost your mental capacity and the impact it could have on your loved ones if measures have not been put in place? Most of us have people who would be willing to help however it is not that simple when dealing with institutions. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you to appoint representatives who can make decisions on your behalf. They can ‘step into your shoes’ when you are unable to make decisions for yourself. There are two types; Property and Financial and Health and Welfare which can deal with a range issues from running your bank accounts/business to decisions about where you live and how you should be treated medically. People can become incapacitated at any time during their lives either through an accident or illness. If you are a business owner, have you considered who would take over the daily running of your business? Who would have the authority to access the bank accounts and make decisions? Restrictions and guidance on how to manage your affairs/business can all be including in a Lasting Power of Attorney. If you would like to discuss making Lasting Powers of Attorney, please feel free to call me on 01952 297919.

Staying In

OR LEAVING THE EU

What are the implications for your personal finances? With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe, and won’t be forced into adopting the euro at any future point. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence - negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had.

So what issues should we be thinking about?

To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound. • The state of the property market. • Fuel prices. • Flight and travel costs. • Data roaming charges.

A majority vote to leave the EU

The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker sterling brings higher inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term. Ratings agency, Moody’s, have also suggested the UK’s strong credit rating could be put at risk if we leave the EU, but as we mentioned earlier, opinions aren’t based on hard evidence as there’s no data on which to model an outcome. Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedance, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter” if we left Europe. The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000 homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices. 55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home.1 eMoov say that, rather than an exit from Europe directly affecting the UK property market, the accompanying general

42

economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge financial decision, which could then reduce overall demand. Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote.2 Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs, which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices. If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop. Cost of travel Dame Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyJet, has warned that the cost of travel would rise steeply if we exit the EU, and it would mean the end of cheap flights. Others suggest a less severe impact for holidaymakers, saying that a fall in local prices within many countries would compensate for the drop in sterling value. Again, even if a drop in the value of the pound does occur, there’s no reason to believe that it would be a long-term problem. Data roaming charges The cost of using mobile phones and other devices abroad could increase significantly if we leave the EU. This is because the arrangement to reduce extortionate data roaming fees once charged by UK providers may no longer be valid if we are not part of the European Union. It is thought unlikely that a similar agreement could be reached by an independent UK.

Voting to stay

At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders. The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit. Author and property expert, Kate Faulkner, believes that growth of the property market would continue if we were to stay in Europe, but this would be at a reasonable level rather than a return of the unsustainable price rises that we’ve seen in the past. https://www.lovemoney.com/news/50954/brexit-eu-in-out-referendumproperty-prices-petrol-pensions-air-fares-jobs http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/money/mortgages-bills/what-a-brexit-couldmean-for-our-money-11364042606186 https://www.emoov.co.uk/news/2016/02/23/brexit-could-see-uk-houseprices-drop-by-5/ 1

Bike4Life

RAISES £63,500 FOR MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY to fund 25 air ambulance missions across the region. Jason Levy, fundraising and marketing director for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, and chair of the Bike4Life organising committee, said: “Our Ride Out is always a much anticipated event for bikers, and this year was certainly our biggest yet. Due to the growing popularity of the Festival, and thanks to the support from RAF Cosford, we moved the event to the airfield to accommodate the 12,000 visitors, a third more than previous years.

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s Bike4Life Ride Out and Festival attracted a record 12,000 motorcyclists on Sunday (8th May 2016), which raised £63,500 for the vitally important life saving charity. Over 6,000 motor bikers took part in the 23 mile Ride Out from Meole Brace in Shrewsbury, 40% more than participated in 2015, demonstrating the growing popularity of the event among the biking fraternity. The riders and pillions were led by motorcycle and truck racing legend, Steve Parrish, adventure motorcyclist and author, Nick Sanders, ITV4 Motorbike Show’s Henry Cole, the Emergency Bikers, Mark Hayes (Flymo) and Steve Forrest, and Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s chief executive, Hanna Sebright. In total, the event raised £63,500 for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, over 40 per cent more than 2015’s total, which will help

Pritchards Masters of Professional Dry-Cleaning & Laundry

“Over a 35 per cent of the incidents our three air ambulances attend are road traffic accidents, and sadly a great number of these involve motorcyclists in urgent need of medical attention. The atmosphere on the day was fantastic, and a huge thank you goes to the bikers and pillions who did the Ride Out and to everyone who attended the Festival for their support of our event and the charity.” Bike4Life is also in collaboration with Safer Roads Partnership and West Mercia Police who work tirelessly to promote road safety and to help reduce the number of road traffic collisions across West Mercia. The event took a year of planning and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Central Motorway Police Group, the Highways Agency, West Mercia Police Shropshire County Council, the RAF Museum Cosford and RAF Cosford. Organisers would also like to thank other road users for their patience and understanding during the Ride Out procession.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL

I WILL DO IT But tomorrow never comes. That seems to be the case when we are asked have we made a Will? It is a protective mechanism to try and not think about the inevitable for all of us. Making a Will is one of the most important purchases we will ever make in life.

TOMORROW...

would typically pay a solicitor, despite our expertise and specialisation in the will writing field.” To become a member of the IPW is a significant accreditation, as you must pass a strict entrance examination, undertake continuous training, have a £2 million Professional Indemnity Insurance and abide by a rigorous Code of Conduct. That is highly reassuring, as will writing is an area riddled with unprofessional practitioners offering poor advice and with organisations, or will factories, who have little knowledge or experience

Making sure your life time hard work goes to the people you love and cherish. This might not happen if you die without making a Will.

Having a Will that makes sure that your wishes are achieved and that can help you reduce any Inheritance Tax liabilities is crucial.

Alistair of ACW Wills and Estates Limited says “As a qualified member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters I have established a local business to give local residents the support of a will writing professional. Clients can trust ACW Wills implicitly, knowing we are a reputable and informed business who know exactly how to structure a Will, thanks to our membership of the IPW. This will allow us to stand apart from other will writers. At the same time, our charges are much lower than clients

ACW wills can also help draw up Lasting Power of Attorney that will allow your affairs to be conducted by a friend or family member if you are mentally incapacitated at some point in the future. For friendly guidance and advice in plain English contact Alistair on 07768 643225.

If anything happened to you tomorrow ... •• Would you be happy for your family to wait to receive your estate? •• Would you want your children to be in Local Authority care? •• Would you like the people to receive your estate to be decided by the Government? •• Would you be happy for your house to be sold for Nursing Home fees? If the answer is NO to these questions, then you either need to make or review your will Contact Alistair at ACW Wills and Estates Limited on

Storage Solutions

FOR EVERY ROOM

Halls

Coats, shoes and umbrellas seem to multiply in mysterious ways, and finding storage space for them in a narrow hallway can be a headache. Hallway storage is all about organisation – not just buying slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches, but also providing a variety of storage types: instead of just having some coat hooks behind the door, add a couple of racks at the bottom for shoes, maybe a hook for an umbrella, and a shelf at the top for bits and pieces. The result? A store-all solution. Alternatively, in many hallways it’s possible to build a cupboard under the stairs, kitted out inside with practical hooks, shelves and racks.

Bathrooms

We all want to be able to maximise space, show off the things we love and find the things we need quickly and easily. Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to how good our homes look and how streamlined our lives can be. Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. From spices to ski gear, toys to towels and photos and files, our homes are full of stuff. Stuff that we have to find space for, stuff that might need to be displayed or concealed, stuff for which we have to provide storage. Each room, large or small, requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of otherwise ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Or you could employ either an interior designer or an architect. Designers will be particularly helpful for creating an overall ‘look’, but should also be knowledgeable about space planning and have plenty of resources and contacts, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can offer inventive ideas to make the most of your space.

Living Rooms

Storage and display go hand in hand, especially in a living room, which is often the public face of a home, and where you’ll want to show off treasured possessions at the same time as concealing less attractive items. The best way to cope with these twin demands is to build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches, and cupboards within which you can hide whatever you like. In a typical period home, there is often a central chimney breast with alcoves either side which are ideal for shelving above and cupboards below. Alternatively, you could run a long, low cupboard along one entire wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which could also serve as either seating or display space. Thinking more laterally, when two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to find much-needed shelving space above (and perhaps around) the door or the windows.

48

It’s surprising how much kit you need to store in a bathroom – and this tends to be one room where storage furniture often gets overlooked. Custommade floor and wall cabinets offer a great solution for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces completely clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets hide belongings from view and can be built around sanitaryware to cover up unattractive pipe work. Alternatively, you might consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted pieces such as shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. For a complete, streamlined solution, pipe runs can be hidden behind floor-to-ceiling false walls made from studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. This is also possible when building a shower wall, allowing you to create handy niches in which to store shampoos and soaps.

Bedrooms

Clothes storage is one of those things that most of us can never get enough of, and in an ideal world you would design it specifically for whoever is using it. There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t make the very best use of space); find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist and choose from one of their ranges – which often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements, readily available from DIY sheds or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. Each option has its pros and cons, so it’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket.

Children’s Rooms

The first consideration for storage in children’s rooms is that your little ones can reach everything they need all by themselves. Raised beds with storage underneath are very useful for storing clothes or toys at just the right height. It’s also important that drawers are easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out if pulled hard. As for play storage, be very organised. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers (labelled if necessary) for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints. Image - Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

Hypnos Hideaway AT NEWPORT BEDS

The Hideaway divan base from Hypnos offers significant increases in storage capacity compared with traditional drawer divans. All storage areas are concealed behind beautifully upholstered deep valances, which cover the full height of the divan base. These practical and flexible pleated valances provide an exquisite tailored finish and attractive detailing, whilst ensuring easy access to stored items.

The Hideaway divan offers a unique choice of hidden storage. On beds larger than a single (90cm), which come with two divan halfs, there is the option to have drawers on one side and the large hideaway cavity on the other. It is the large open cavity that provides real flexibility for storage. Its robust design and construction caters for the storage of heavier and larger sized items like suitcases and boxes. The valances not only hide the cavity, but in the cases of drawers, also completely hides the outline of the drawer. All Hideaway divans are non-spring platform top divans that rest on castors for ease of movement. The base features a solid wooden top to provide a more supportive feel to the mattress, and is upholstered in fabric with a wide range of colour choices allowing you to match your divan to your home.

Trio’s statement is “Furniture is our business” and their vision is “Everybody can have anything, anytime, straight away”. They continue to re-invest not only back into the business creating up-to-date displays with new products and trends but they have just invested £3,000 on a state of the art cardboard and plastic bailer to recycle the whole of the waste that is created by running one of the largest independent furniture stores in Shropshire. Having appointed a new visual merchandise team their latest measure is to create a department store feel with piped music and different themes presented as you walk around the massive superstore. A recent £20,000 has been invested on a deeper sleeper display of Sealy posturepeadic beds, which has just been installed along with a £50,000 Halo studio and £10,000 on the finest leather sofas, Editions by Natuzzi Group. The company continues to house the largest brand names in the furniture and carpet industry, especially the bedding department. A further £5,000 is currently being invested on new heating system on the carpet department alone with a Powerflex heating system that will remotely control the flow of warm air circulating the department. The choice of carpets mirrors their vision statement, that everybody can have anything, their prices are very competitive from starter homes and landlords and people who are on a budget to those that

have the ability to enjoy the finest 100% hand made woollen carpets designed by Jacaranda. A further 10,000 square feet extension is currently being discussed to join the Telford store, this will allow more stock to be held for busy times like Christmas and bank holidays as they are finding people like to come in and buy but they want it that day. In addition to the branded furniture Trio Furnishings also deal with worldwide factories that deliver in 40ft containers every month. Their own brand “Trio Furnishings” carries seven exclusive designs of metal beds frames; they also have a range of solid oak furniture, all hand made using the finest American oak and a further collection of recliner sofas. A deal has just been signed off with Lay-z-boy, one of the world’s largest furniture with motion companies, this is the latest brand name to join the group. The new 27 seat show display has now been launched along with the famous Duresta upholstery. Further investment is also underway to build their online sales. Their website www.triofurnishings.com now attracts tens of thousands of people weekly. This is their latest growth area with new employees are being taken on to join the online team to cope with the demand of telesales and online orders, which are despatched nationally daily. They also offer an interior design plan. They have just completed a 4 bedroomed showhome for Hamma investments in Oakengates and things like rhino heads and large posters of New York are not to be sneezed at, as they look amazing. Its fair to say Trio Furnishing do not let the grass grow under their feet, they constantly move with the times, trends and designs and that’s why after 43 years in retails they are still attracting new customers, most who will return. Growing Up, Not Growing Out

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Most parents would say that their child’s health and life expectancy is vitally important to them. Yet nearly a third of all children in the UK are overweight or obese – increasing their risk of long-term health issues and a shortened lifespan. Last year Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, offered his explanation. “Junk food, sugary fizzy drinks and couch potato lifestyles are normalising obesity and as parents, a third of us can’t now spot when our own child is seriously overweight.” National Childhood Obesity Week, running from 4th-10th July, aims to raise awareness of this escalating problem.

The Scale of the Problem The 2014 Public Health Survey for England (HSE) showed that 31.2% of children aged 2 to 15 were overweight or obese. The 2014/15 National Child Measurement identified 19.1% of Year 6 children (aged 10-11) as obese and a further 14.2% as overweight, while even more worryingly, 9.1% of Reception children (aged 4-5) were already obese, with another 12.8% overweight.

The Danger of Childhood Obesity Many people dismiss a child’s extra weight as ‘puppy fat’ they’ll ‘grow out of’. This is a dangerous myth. Obese infants and children often remain obese through to adulthood, greatly increasing their risk of serious health problems including insulin resistance, premature onset of diabetes, premature onset of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, disability, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis) and endometrial, breast and colon cancers. Dr Sania Nishtar, Co-Chair of the WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, warned: “Overweight and obesity impact on a child’s quality of life, as they face a wide range of barriers, including physical, psychological and health consequences. We know that obesity can impact on educational attainment too and this, combined with the likelihood that they will remain obese into adulthood, poses major health and economic consequences for them, their families and society as a whole.”

Tackling the Problem What the government is doing: • The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) provides data to help the government understand children’s weight issues and formulate strategies for tackling them - and is also intended as a ‘vehicle for engaging with children and families about healthy lifestyles and weight issues’. Every year, trained healthcare professionals in school measure the height and weight of children in reception class (aged 4- 5 years) and year 6 (aged 10-11 years), using these measurements to calculate a Body Mass Index (BMI) centile. • Initiatives such as the Change4Life programme provide families with straightforward information about healthy lifestyles. • The Sugar Tax may be controversial, but hopefully it will encourage companies to reduce sugar in their products. Government research shows that if sugar in soft drinks was halved, sugar consumption would decrease by 5g in young children and adults and 11g in 10-19 year olds. If the nation’s sugar intake dropped to recommended levels within 10 years, 4,000 early deaths could be avoided and the NHS would save £480 million every year.

54

What Parents Can Do: • Give your child the best start. Exclusively breastfeeding babies until 6 months significantly reduces their risk of becoming overweight or obese. • Reduce Their Sitting Time. Research has proved that sitting for prolonged periods damages our health, even if we get regular exercise. So keep their box set binge-watching sessions to a minimum and ensure they’re broken up with short bursts of activity – creating something, helping with gardening or a trip to the park. • Increase Their Physical Activity. This needn’t be team sports or a gym session; find something they enjoy. Walking or cycling all or part of the way to school, a trip to the park or playground, countryside walks, kicking a football around, swimming, trying indoor snowboarding or skating, playing tag or trying a fitness videogame or dance DVD are all just as good. • Ensure They Get Enough Sleep. Lack of sleep can affect appetite-stimulating hormones, as well as affecting memory and concentration, lowering immunity and increasing the risk of mental and physical health problems. • Improve Their Diet > Beware sugar. Children and young people consume 3 times the recommended amount of sugar on average. Look out for hidden sugars in sauces and cereals, cut out sugary drinks, and if your children are used to adding sugar to cereals or drinks, wean them off slowly so that the change in taste isn’t too dramatic. > Provide at least Five a Day. This can be any form of fruit or vegetables, although ensure it’s not all from juices, as these contain free sugars just as damaging as those in sugary drinks. > Monitor Portion Size. Active teens need more calories, but younger children need significantly smaller portions. > Monitor Pocket Money Spending to ensure it isn’t spent on junk food and sweets. Finally, Set a Good Example. If you spend most of your free time in front of the TV or computer eating unhealthy snacks, it will be hard to persuade your child that following suit will damage their health and life expectancy. Don't Try to Hide

FROM POOR HEARING

When did you last mishear someone’s name, fail to follow the plot of a TV drama or ask someone to repeat something they said, two or three times? According to the website NHS Choices, there are approximately four million people in the UK with hearing loss who could benefit from wearing hearing aids, but who either ignore their condition or refuse to do anything about it. An occasional hearing lapse – particularly in a noisy environment - may not be a cause for concern, but if you regularly experience difficulties you should probably seek help. However, while most people are happy to accept treatment for poor eyesight and impaired mobility, many are reluctant to do so when it comes to their hearing. So why is it so hard for us to admit to hearing problems?

As a society we have become much more compassionate about aging issues such as memory loss and dementia, but sadly there is still a tendency to regard age-related deafness as something of a joke. Carry out an online search for “hard of hearing old man” or “hard of hearing old woman” and you’ll find exaggerated images of senior citizens, hands cupped round ears, looking angry or hopelessly confused. It doesn’t help that the models who pose for these shots, clad in grey wigs and brandishing ear trumpets, are often years younger. We wouldn’t dream of creating caricatures of people with poor eyesight, so why do we pick on those who find it hard to hear? Human beings often use humour to defuse their fears and it may simply be that deafness frightens us more than other age-related health issues. Hearing loss can be profoundly isolating, leading sufferers to lose confidence and become withdrawn. Not only that, research has shown that it can lead to cognitive impairment and depression. No wonder, then, that so many of us are in denial about our hearing problems, inventing reasons why we missed a vital piece of information: “They’re always mumbling on TV” or “The doorbell’s playing up”. Although you may want to hide your condition from loved ones, it’s not a secret that can be kept forever. When people lose their hearing they not only tend to retreat from normal social interaction, they also force others to work much harder to communicate with them. Hearing impairment in one individual can affect their whole family and the longer they leave it, the less chance there is that they will be able to adapt to using a hearing aid. Hearing experts such as Louise Hart from Action on Hearing Loss agree that the sooner you start to use an aid, the more you’ll get out of it. She believes that many people are put off wearing aids because it will make them look old, but points out that modern devices are a great improvement on those that were available even a decade ago. “Not only do today’s digital hearing aids work better than the older analogue ones, they’re also much smaller and neater than they used to be,” she says.

56

Choosing a hearing aid Hearing aids are powered by tiny batteries and nowadays almost all models are digital, rather than analogue. You can choose between several different types, depending on your personal tastes and needs. The Behind-the-Ear (BTE) model does what it says: resting behind the ear, it transmits sound through either an earmould or a small, soft tip that enters the ear canal. In-the-Ear (ITE) sits in the ear canal and the shell of the ear, while In-the-Canal (ITC) fits inside the ear canal with its working parts in the earmould. The Completely-in-theCanal (CIC) fits deeper into your ear canal than an ITC aid. You can obtain hearing aids through the NHS. However it’s worth bearing in mind that the ITE, ITC and CIC models mentioned above are not standard issue for the NHS, although they may be available in certain circumstances. You’ll have a wider choice if you buy privately, but this can be a more costly option. Fears that NHS models may be old-fashioned, unsightly or less efficient are unfounded, according to Louise Hart, who adds: “The NHS can procure high-quality digital hearing aids. For most situations, they perform very well and the waiting time to get one is short.” If you or someone you know is worried about their hearing, try the free online hearing test at www.actiononhearingloss. org.uk. If you’d like to know more about hearing loss, the charity Hearing Link can help by providing information, services and support. Visit www.hearinglink.org or telephone 0300 111 1113. Hearing loss can be worrying for you and your family, but don’t let outdated prejudices prevent you from getting help. In future there’s no reason why using a hearing aid shouldn’t be just as acceptable as wearing a pair of reading glasses.

Physiotherapy Based Bike Fit Over the years with the increased success of team GB both on the track and on the road there has been huge increase in people wanting to take up cycling and this in turn has seen an increase in cycling related injuries sustained on the bike. Within the clinic we have begun to see these problems with an awful lot of cyclists riding with pain and discomfort often down to incorrect posture on the bike, lower back pain and knee pain being the most common injuries. Here at SB Sports Injury & Physiotherapy Clinic we have developed a physiotherapy based bike fit where we have taken the expertise offered by experienced bike fit specialist and used our expertise and knowledge of anatomy and injuries to develop this service, based on your current and previous injury history. The area of bike fitting is a much debated

topic throughout the world of cycling. What’s the best position in relation to comfort, optimum aerodynamics and performance? There are varying levels of service offered to you at the point of sale. When you purchase a new bike whether it is your first or an upgrade, you can go for a basic fit to more in-depth systems such that use infrared 3D technology to measure the cyclist’s optimum position. In some cases you may just be sold the bike with very little advice about positioning. Now of course like most hobbies you can explore these options to suit your affordability. The service we have developed would benefit beginners, novices and more experienced cyclists. Whether you are starting out and want to get set up correct or if you are already experiencing pain it is a service you may benefit from. For more information email admin@shropshirephysio.co.uk or speak to Steve Briggs on 01952 462330

WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY

World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual event supported by the World Health Organisation. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors and highlights the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise public awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors and persuading health ministers worldwide to strive for their countries to become self-sufficient in safe, voluntarily donated blood and blood products.

Preparing To Give Blood

Why Should You Give Blood?

If you’re nervous, take along a friend or a distraction such as a book or MP3 player. Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take more than an hour.

Have you ever considered giving blood? It’s easy to find reasons not to, but it’s also easy to assume that blood will be instantly available if we need a blood transfusion. However, in the UK alone we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs. It’s not just victims of accidents and trauma that need blood transfusions. Your blood could also save the lives of patients undergoing surgery or cancer treatments, new mothers suffering haemorrhage during or after childbirth and people with blood disorders or sickle cell disease. In 2014, 67% of donated blood in the UK was used to treat medical conditions including anaemia, cancer and blood disorders, 27% was used in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% was used to treat blood loss after childbirth.

Who Can Give Blood? If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood. Existing donors can carry on donating blood beyond 66. Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months. However, there are things that can affect your eligibility to give blood, such as hazardous occupations, receiving a transplant, travel to certain countries in the last year, some cosmetic procedures and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www.blood.co.uk/whocan-give-blood. Also, women under 20 who weigh under 10st 3lb (65kg) or are under 5’ 6” (168cm) tall will need to have their blood volume estimated before they can give blood, as a low blood volume may cause fainting during donation.

Registering To Be a Blood Donor You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by phone by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation venue during a session. You can book an appointment in advance or take a walk-in slot at one of the 23,000 blood donation sessions held at more than 3,000 venues each year. 24 of these venues are permanent blood donor centres in major towns and cities, while the others are temporary local venues such as village halls.

60

To keep yourself as healthy and comfortable as possible when you donate blood, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regular meals. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid exercise that’s more strenuous than your usual activities. • Know your medical and travel history.

What Happens When You Donate Blood

Prior to your donation, you’ll be given a welcome leaflet and a drink just before you give blood, to help you stay hydrated. Your identity and the information on your donor health check form will be confirmed, and your iron levels will be checked by testing a drop of blood from your finger. A registered nurse will be on hand to discuss any concerns. In the donation chair, a small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure. The donation site will be cleaned with antiseptic before the needle, which is connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special agitator scale constantly measures your donated blood and will stop your donation automatically once the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any discomfort or pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm.

After Your Donation You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. Once you’re home, you should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine afterwards, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323.

Become a Lifesaver Think of saving a life and you probably imagine rescuing someone from an accident or a fire. But by becoming a blood donor, you could save a life every time you donate. So why not register today?

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE

Four years after its concept debut, Range Rover’s Evoque convertible has come to fruition. Its hard top sibling has already sold more than half a million units since it was launched in 2011 and over 1,500 orders have so far been placed for the convertible variant.

Boasting a 251litre boot, 500mm water wade ability, all terrain progress control and a ski hatch, it is a comfortable and relatively practical drive.

What is it?

Any rivals?

The Evoque convertible is the world’s first convertible compact SUV. Based on the same platform as the Evoque, and featuring much of the same spec, the convertible looks luxurious. The car’s chassis has received strengthening in order to maintain the car’s torsional rigidity, despite its lack of roof.

What’s under the bonnet? A 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium diesel engine powers the 4x4, putting out 180PS and 430Nm of torque through the Efficient Driveline four-wheel-drive system. This system varies the flow of torque between the front and rear wheels in different driving conditions. Fuel economy is a modest 49.6mpg while the diesel emits 149g of C02 per kilometre, making it theoretically one of the most fuel efficient Range Rovers available. The 9-speed automatic gearbox is from the standard Evoque. The added weight of the chassis – 1,967kg compared to the coupe’s 1,690kg – is noticeable when accelerating out of corners, though switching into its semi-automatic function and making use of the steering wheel mounted paddles proves slightly more responsive.

What’s the spec like? A 10.2inch touchscreen allows the driver to navigate using easy pinch and swipe motions even whilst driving. However, it can prove difficult to read when the roof is down. Safety is accounted for by hidden aluminium roll over bars, which automatically deploy in the event of an accident. The convertible is not just a summer fancy.

62

The roof can operate at speeds of up to 30mph and, unlike some other convertibles, neither rear visibility nor boot capacity is compromised when the roof is folded down.

Like for like, the Evoque convertible has no rivals. It is likely to draw a customer base from fans of luxury D-segment convertibles, and drivers of the original Evoque are also expected to be tempted.

What’s it like to drive? The 9-speed gearbox feels too sluggish for the convertible, due to the weight of the strengthened chassis. However, in its position as the new it-car for fashionistas, it is unlikely that the convertible will be tackling much more than the occasional country road. Acceleration to 60mph takes 9.7seconds while the vehicle tops out at 121mph and steering is reassuringly firm at both high and low speeds. Wind noise is reduced in convertible form thanks to clever aerodynamics and an optional wind deflector, meaning that noise and buffeting in the front of the cabin is limited, and audible conversations can be held even at motorway speeds.

The Knowledge Model: 2016 Range Rover Evoque Convertible 2.0-litre 4WD HSE Dynamic Power: 180PS Max speed: 121mph 0-60mph: 9.7 seconds MPG: 49.6mpg Emissions: 149g/km

Verdict As 4x4s go, the Evoque convertible wouldn’t be the obvious choice. Practicality is seriously limited, and realistically the model would only provide a comfortable long distance journey for two. But drivers wanting the benefits of both a 4x4 and a soft top can’t go wrong. Perhaps the model could do with some refinement, but for the first of its kind it will certainly set a precedent.

BMW

AT THE MOVIES 20th century, the Z8 roadster. With a modern and stylish roadster to accompany one of the most stylish film characters, the Z8 was met with an unfortunate end when a helicopter wielding a circular saw cut the car in half at a caviar factory. Shame. It was fitted with surface-toair missiles that had taken out a helicopter previously and it even had six cup holders, so it was very useful. As a main character, Jason Statham’s E38 735i in 2002’s The Transporter is pretty key, with much of the early action involving the 7 Series. One of its best moments is the chase following the bank robbery, where Frank drives superbly around the streets and ends up jumping off a bridge onto a car transporter lorry.

There’s no greater advert for a car than a starring role in a movie – and for BMW there have been a few! One of the biggest was when BMW took over the Bond franchise with a centrepiece in 1995 blockbuster GoldenEye. Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, drives the first generation Z3 with Bond girl Natalya Simonova, played by Izabella Scorupco, in the passenger seat around Cuba before the final mission. As with many Bond cars, the Z3 was kitted out with the latest gadgets, including a parachute braking system, all-point radar, missiles housed behind the headlights, and the iconic ejector seat. With little need for the Z3 in GoldenEye, which involved Bond driving a tank through Moscow, Brosnan returned in Tomorrow Never Dies and this film included one of the most impressive Bond cars, thanks to the amount of tech on-board. Bond was given a 750iL that included bulletproof windows, electrified door handles, tear gas, spike dispenser and missiles concealed in the roof. The most impressive feature of the lot, however, was the fact the car could be remote controlled from a touchpad in Bond’s phone. In the famous chase through a multistorey car park, Bond drives the 750iL from the back seat to remain under cover and thanks to the screen on his phone can see everything. After jumping out of the car, Bond drives the BMW into the assailants before driving off the car park and into a rental car shop several floors below. BMW’s most recent appearance in the Bond franchise was in The World Is Not Enough, and to close the century, BMW provided their final car of the

64

Noted for its driving sequences, 1998 film Ronin - set in Paris and Nice - involved plenty of action, and with the film nearing its final act, a BMW E34 M5 took place in one of the best chases in film. With the director wanting realism from every sequence, the Paris chase involved the M5, driven by Natascha McElhone’s Deirdre, with Robert De Niro pursuing in a Peugeot 406. The M5 dances between the traffic on both sides of the road, causing havoc as it drives around the congested city. Through tunnels and against the motorway traffic, the M5’s sporting pedigree is shown off, with the throaty six-cylinder engine screaming throughout. The only way to take it down was a pot shot from Jean Reno hitting one of the tyres, causing the M5 to flip. We jump forward a little with our final car on the list to 2011, with the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible series. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol involved one of the best concept designs, the Vision EfficientDynamic from 2009, and was the pre-cursor to the i8 electric sports car. It was involved in the final act where Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, needed to intercept the film’s protagonist and prevent the start of a nuclear war. The V ED swept in and out of the Mumbai traffic and with a special HUD with navigation screen it looked pretty cool too. Other honourable mentions for BMW include the black and orange E24 633 CSi from Back to the Future II, the E28 5 Series from The Bourne Supremacy and Robert De Niro’s E31 850i from heist movie, The Score.

Heritage

Lapped by the blue Tyrrhenian Sea, framed by mountains rising over 1,000 metres, Palermo is the bustling capital of the autonomous region of Sicily. Attracted by the natural harbour and strategic location, myriad civilisations landed on these shores and on its solitary headland, the iconic Mount Pellegrino has seen them all: Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish to name just a few, all leaving their mark on a city which became one of the richest on the Mediterranean. Today Palermo remains an enticing mix of old and new, treelined avenues festooned in hibiscus and oleander, traditional street markets, hidden courtyards and breezy squares and narrow twisting lanes where laundry flaps on the balconies. The air smells of oranges and lemons and freshly-baked pizza, church bells mingle with the hooting of scooters and tuk-tuks and pony and traps rattle side by side. Bursting with colour, Palermo is above all a city of palaces, theatres and churches, contributing to Sicily’s generous share of UNESCO sites. In a capital once protected by four patron saints, the most venerated today is Saint Rosalia, who freed the people from the plague. Churches pop up around every corner: austere or ornate, Norman, Renaissance, Baroque and more, but most endearing are the hidden chapels in the Vucciria neighbourhood, their gleaming interiors entirely covered in white stucco angels. Yet top of the list must be the Cathedral founded in the 12th century, boasting a magnificent doorway and royal tombs, a stunning Treasury and a rooftop walk, up 107 spiral steps but worth the effort for the panoramic view of

66

IN PALERMO

the city bristling with domes, the sea and the surrounding hills. Meanwhile, far below, visitors head for Piazza Verdi to pose on the steps of the Teatro Massimo and gaze at its refined neo-classical façade flanked by two bronze lions. Dating back to the late19th century, it’s the third largest Opera House in Europe, justly renowned for its acoustics, and the place where the final scenes of the Godfather Part III were filmed in 1990. Stroll along the road and you come to another architectural gem, the Politeama Garibaldi Theatre; unlike Teatro Massimo, this was built for the common people who preferred operetta, plays, equestrian shows and the circus. Yet one of the theatre’s greatest moments was the performance of Puccini’s opera La Bohème in 1896, applauded by a near delirious audience after a disappointing reception in Turin. Now home to the Sicilian Foundation Symphonic Orchestra, it dazzles visitors with its grand entrance and superb decorations, while on some guided tours you might see the original painted stage curtain weighing 450 kilos. As for Palermo’s palaces, most exotic are the Zisa and Cuba in Arabic style, set in the former pleasure grounds of the Norman kings, but most impressive is the Norman Palace, currently the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Following the Norman Conquest in 1072, the Arabic fortress was transformed into a sumptuous palace for the new Kings of Sicily, and as such is said to be the oldest royal residence in Europe. Beyond the 17th century façade, highlights include the splendid Ruggero Hall, named after Sicily’s first Norman King, and the 12th century Palatine Chapel. With its Norman architecture, its wooden ceiling in traditional Islamic style and its glittering Byzantine mosaics and dome, it exemplifies the rich blend of cultures which have shaped Palermo for over 1,000 years.

Why You'll be Bowled Over

BY THIS POPULAR GAME

A team of uniformed players lined up to bowl on a perfectly manicured green is one of the most evocative sights of the summer. Lawn Bowls is a gently-paced team game that – like cricket matches on the village green – seems to reflect a British way of life that has barely changed in hundreds of years. However, if you have always thought that outdoor bowls is a sport that is exclusive to the United Kingdom, you may be surprised to hear that the game is also played in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

Lawn Bowls has become popular for two main reasons: it’s a highly social activity, offering a strong sense of camaraderie within the club itself and the potential to develop wider networks through inter-club matches. It is also accessible to new members, being one of the easiest team sports to pick up (although regulars will tell you it takes time and skill to perfect the techniques required). The game is played in singles, pairs, triples and four player teams. Players use weighted bowls known as ‘woods’ that are heavier on one side, giving them a bias. The bowls are rolled along a flat grass bowling green towards a smaller ball, or jack, with points scored for the woods that stop closest to the jack. The team captain (or ‘skipper’) always plays last and takes responsibility for directing the team’s shots and tactics. It sounds simple, and it is, but the game also relies on precision, patience and – occasionally, when a player drives to dislodge an opponent’s ball from the jack – power. The history of playing bowls goes back to medieval times and the world’s oldest surviving bowling green, in Southampton, was first used in 1299. The best known historical reference to the sport is probably the story about Sir Francis Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe as the Spanish Armada approached the coast: he was so absorbed in play he is said to have insisted on finishing the game, claiming that he would still have time to beat the Spaniards. While this story may not be strictly true, it serves to highlight the addictive qualities of the game: apprentices, labourers and servants were banned from playing bowls by successive English kings because it was thought to distract men from their duties and lead them into dissolute company. Nowadays England is said to have more than 400,000 bowlers, while Scotland has approximately 100,000. Successful clubs can go on to compete at national and even international level: the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women is held every four years and the next event will take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 28 November to 16 December 2016. Despite its status as one of Great Britain’s most popular sports, up to now Lawn Bowls has had the reputation of being more suitable for the older generation. That view has recently been challenged by an upsurge of interest in Barefoot Bowls, a

68

relatively new Australian variant of the game that has attracted more young people to play. Many Australian clubs have been happy to relax their dress code and membership rules in order to appeal to the next generation of players. Barefoot Bowls uses four players per team with a game length of between 30-60 minutes, although the main objective – to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible – remains the same. In this country Barefoot Bowls has been promoted as a street sport and a tournament held in London last year drew a crowd of more than 150 students and young professionals. Another more traditional variant of Lawn Bowls is Crown Green Bowls, which adds an additional level of challenge as it is played on an uneven surface. In France the game of Pétanque is played on a hard dirt or gravel surface, either in public parks or dedicated areas called boulodromes. Hollow metal balls are bowled towards a ‘cochonnet’ (which translates as ‘piglet’), which is the Gallic version of the British jack. Pétanque is surprisingly popular in the UK too, and the English Pétanque Association website (www.englishpetanque.org.uk) lists 16 regions where the sport is played. There are thousands of bowling clubs across the UK where you can pick up the basics and eventually go on to play in leagues if you want to take part at a more serious level. The game can be enjoyed at any age (provided you are reasonably mobile) and you can play all year round, as the sport goes indoors in the winter. No one is said to be more than 15 miles away from their nearest bowling ground, so next time you come across the classic scene of players assembled on a green, don’t just walk on by: find out how you can become involved in one of the country’s best loved sports. You can find details of our local bowling clubs in the 'Local Health, Sport & Fitness Classes' pages which are at the back of this magazine, there is one in Lilleshall, Oakengates and Shifnal.

Art Exhibition

Phone Home

Are you ready to control everything in your house with a smartphone app? In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house. You can even control several devices around the home using Control 4 which is designed to help you keep a check on home no matter where you are access your cameras, turn on the lights, control the heating or even set up your cinema room while you at home (turn on the dvd player, dim the lights and surround sound on) - all at the touch of a button.

devices. You can also program certain events to take place automatically, for example - you can turn off your lights, lock all of the doors and turn the thermostat down. Professional installation is required but the ease of use makes this one of the best home automation systems currently available. There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive - so if you fancy a Bluetoothenabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to make even more smart devices - although inevitably, Apple and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides. That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition, so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best times and temperatures for heating your home, and can talk to your phone, see that you’re heading home from work and make sure the house is nice and toasty for your arrival. Sky’s latest Sky Q system can send video - including your recordings - from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home. Control4 is a smart home automation system to control lighting, entertainment, security, energy, and other connected

Bring Dad for Free

ON FATHER’S DAY SUNDAY 19TH JUNE

Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge, is inviting all dads to come as their guest on Sunday, 19th June when they can follow in Sherlock Holmes footsteps at a detective themed Father’s Day. Admission to the Victorian Town will be free for fathers, when accompanied by another fullpaying adult.

Dad can also pit his strength in a tug of war on The Green at 1.30pm, or why not buy him a pint and pork pie and join in the lively sing-a-long in the New Inn pub. Other family activities throughout the day include candle dipping in the Goods Shed using Victorian techniques to make multicoloured candles to take home and a ride on the horse-drawn bus between 1.30pm and 3pm.

Costumed actors from Sundial Theatre Company will perform scenes from their own version of a Sherlock Holmes murder mystery at 11.30am and 2.30pm. The legendary detective and his trusty sidekick Dr Watson were created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late Victorian era and this light-hearted take on his classic mysteries is certain to raise a smile. Then put your own detective skills to the test by following a cryptic trail set by criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty, Holmes’ arch enemy, solve the clues and win a prize.

Open 10am to 5pm Blists Hill is one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums. A great value Annual Passport Ticket allowing unlimited entry into all ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums costs £25 per adult, £20 for seniors, £15 for children under 18, £68 for a family of two adults and all their children and £50 for a family with one adult; under 5s free (t&c's apply); Passports can also be bought online in advance saving 10% and individual entry tickets are available at each museum. Activities and workshops vary day-to-day and some carry an extra charge. For further information call the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on 01952 433 424 or visit www.ironbridge.org.uk.

Council Welcomes

MAGNA INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT Local Enterprise Partnership, which will see us deliver 8500 new jobs through investing in bringing sites like T54 to the market.

Telford & Wrekin Council has welcomed the announcement that Magna International Inc plans to build a new world class aluminium casting facility at T54. Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Business said, “I am delighted that Magna International has decided to locate its new multi-million pound facility here in Telford. “This signals the dawn of a bright new era of opportunity for everyone in the borough. In Telford, we pride ourselves on being inventive and dynamic and the details of the high tech production process Magna has announced for its planned facility shows that they are a perfect fit for us. "We have been talking to Magna International for more than two years and an awful lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make this possible so it is a realisation of all those discussions.

“Magna’s announcement represents a hugely significant multi-million pound investment which demonstrates that Telford & Wrekin Council’s drive to attract new business and jobs is realising spectacular results. “This major development will see the creation of 295 skilled local jobs when the plant is at full capacity. The investment will also support many more jobs in the local supply chain. “With the T54 site just 12 miles from Jaguar Land Rover’s i54 complex, we are seeing significant levels and enquiries and we are confident more market leaders from the automotive supplies sector will be investing in Telford. “Magna’s proposed world class aluminium casting facility in Telford will be the largest automotive development in the West Midlands after the Jaguar Land Rover complex at the i54 site. We confidently expect that this will prove a gateway for further investment in the T54 site, which is already home to AXYZ Automation and Filtermist International. “Subject to receiving planning permission, we expect that construction on the new facility will begin in the autumn of this year. Magna has said production will begin in 2018.”

“This has been made possible as a result of the land deal that we announced in March with the Homes and Communities Agency and the Marches

Over 20 Bands The popular Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival will take place over the weekend of 9th and 10th July outdoors on The Green at the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron. Now in its 13th year, the free family event showcases some of the finest brass bands from Shropshire and the surrounding counties; this year there will also be a special guest band from Germany giving the festival an international flavour. With some 20 bands performing, it’s the largest, non-competitive brass band festival in the country. At least three bands will be appearing at the festival for the first time, while among the many others performing over the two days are the Abraham Darby Brass Band, Llangollen Silver Band, Black Country Brass Band, Shrewsbury Brass Band the Wellington (Telford) Brass Band and Salopian Brass. Performances begin at 10am on both days and continue until 5pm on Saturday and 6.30pm on Sunday. Bar drinks and light refreshments will be available to purchase. A ticketed charity gala open-air concert in aid of the Severn Hospice, Brass Night of the Proms, will take place on Saturday evening, 9th July

Young composers under the age of 19 on 1st September 2016 can enter the annual Nock Deighton Eric Peagam Memorial Trophy competition, which welcomes submissions in any genre or style, provided they are fully scored for brass band. Closing date is 1st June with a substantial cash prize and trophy for the winner, whose composition might be played during the daytime concerts. There are also cash prizes for those in second and third place too. Looking forward to this year’s Festival, Neil Fury, Chairman, said; “The Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival is now established as one of the major events in the brass band calendar. Its popularity has increased among both the players and the public every year since its inception and more and more bands are asking to come and play in the relaxed atmosphere of the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, which has kindly hosted the event for us.” To book tickets for the charity evening concert, priced at £10 per person, call 07583 279 608; further information about the Festival can be found on www.ironbridgebandfestival.co.uk.

When It's Time

TO CLIMB OUT OF YOUR EMPTY NEST

You’ve dropped her bags off at the student accommodation, taken photos of the campus to show the family and slipped her an extra fifty pounds to help with expenses. As you stand beside the car, waiting to leave, it hits you that you’re not just waving farewell to your daughter for the next three months, you’re saying goodbye to a way of life you have known for over 18 years.

“It wasn’t just that I missed my child, it was feeling that I had moved into a different phase of life,” is how senior nurse Jane Berry sums up the double-whammy most parents experience when seeing their children off to college or university. “Suddenly you are left staring at your partner over the breakfast table, thinking: where do we go from here?” Empty Nest Syndrome is not just about the emotions you feel when a son or daughter leaves home: it’s about facing a significant moment in your own life, too. The empty seat at the dinner table, the smaller shopping trolley, the half load in the washing machine – not to mention the eerie silence and unaccustomed tidiness – are not just reminders of your absent child, they are a wake-up call for you to reassess everything about your life: relationships, achievements, how you enjoy yourself and what you plan to do in the coming years. But it’s not all sadness and gloom. As we all know, living full time with a teenager isn’t always easy and this period of change can lead to a more balanced and mature relationship between parent and child. Positives may include getting your bathroom back, being able to see your friends more often and spending less money on outings and leisure pursuits. No longer will your clothes and possessions be borrowed or the fridge raided, and for the first time in many years you will have the freedom to act spontaneously – taking off for the weekend without guilt or worry. But on the downside there are those inevitable, nagging concerns about how your child is managing: are they eating healthily? Having too many late nights? Getting into unsuitable relationships? It’s just as hard to accept that you no longer have any control over your child’s life as it is to face not seeing them on a daily basis. Even the most positive parent is likely to feel sad for a while when children leave home, and at this time it’s better for your mental wellbeing not to hide your feelings from your partner, family and friends. It can be particularly hard for single parents, or for mums whose emotions are compounded by the onset of the menopause. If negative thoughts persist for many months it may be advisable to seek help from your GP.

84

Here are a few dos and don’ts that can help you climb out of that empty nest: DO - invest time in relationships Put aside those traditional ‘mum and dad’ roles and spend time getting to know your partner again. Plan a holiday together or take a series of short breaks to places you wouldn’t normally go with the whole family. If you are single, this is a good time to sign up to a reputable online dating site and start building a new life for yourself. DO - find ways of filling the time Do something useful with all those hours you previously spent tidying, cleaning, shopping and caring. Join a choir, start blogging about your feelings or plan a life-changing trekking trip to the Himalayas. Use the time constructively to build a new life for yourself instead of letting it slip away. DON’T - stalk your children on social media Through social media and Skype we can see, as well as hear, what our children are doing, but you should avoid the habit of obsessively checking what your child is up to. When you do speak, try to resist interrogating them or telling them how miserable you feel without them. DON’T - underestimate the impact on siblings When a child leaves home it changes the whole family dynamic, and that is often just as hard on the other children as it is for you. Encourage siblings to keep in touch with their absent brother or sister and plan some special activities you can all do together in the holidays. Like any grieving process, the key to recovery is giving yourself time to adapt. “I felt at a loss for far longer than I expected,” admits Jane Berry. “Then something clicked and I was able to move on. Now it’s great to see my son during the holidays, but by the end I can sense he’s counting the days till he can go back. In a way, we are, too – we still miss him but it feels right that he has an independent life.”

The Big Arts Show

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor The new Muti Use Games Area (MUGA) at Brands Meadow and the half ball court at Marshbrook Way have now been installed and the outdoor gym is nearing completion. The new equipment looks great and is already being well used. I am now running out of excuses not to get fit!

1ST - 3RD JULY

policies were deemed to be out of date and the five year land supply called in to question. If the High Court uphold this appeal then there will be little to stop development anywhere in the Borough!! You will have noticed that work has started to prepare for the upgrade of the Clock Tower roundabout. Let’s hope that traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.

Cllr. Nigel Dugmore (Muxton Ward) T: 01952 380237 M: 07528 979395 E: nigel.dugmore@telford.gov.uk

The Big Art Show will have some of the best craft and art artists in Britain. There is going to be over 120 exhibitors including glass artists, ceramicists, furniture designers, jewellers, textile artists, painters, sculptors, metal workers, and a photography exhibition and animation. There will be a number of demonstrations which will include Bronze casting, stone masonry, glass blowing, silversmithing, ceramics and a tattoo artist. During the show there will be live music, giving a relaxed atmosphere. To commemorate twenty years since his passing, one of the UK’s renowned pop artists Stefan Knapp’s largest works entitled Flying 4* will be on exhibition and for sale at The Big Arts Show, sisters show at Secretts of Milford, Milford, Surrey on the 10th and 11th September. Current owners Eleanor and Jerome Shiveley have agreed with Knapp’s widow Cathy to release the 10ft x 20ft enamel mural from their private collection for its long awaited return to public viewing and eventual sale. In the children's area there will a bouncy castle and puppet shows with puppet making work shops.

Cllr Nigel Dugmore

Planning Update: Gladman have appealed against the Planning Inspectors rejection of their appeal against the Muxton Lane refusal. This follows their successful appeal at Haygate Fields, where all the current local planning

The Big Arts Show was established 2014 and this year it will once again take place at the Greenhous West Mid Showground, from 1st to 3rd July.

Kitchen Recipe

Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.

...add a dash of… Quality and Value

All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.

…then a big chunk of…

Ownership and Responsibility

Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.

...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
