Mark Clemmit

Our host for the evening is Mark Clemmit. Described by England National Football Coach, Gareth Southgate, as having a unique ability to make his guests feel relaxed and open, Mark is a longestablished BBC sports broadcaster.

Known to many as ‘Clem’, he is also a prolific event host, which in the past 12 months has taken him to Miami, New York, Toronto, and Melbourne. Mark has also worked with some of the biggest names in sport and industry to develop their personal and professional communication skills.

Danielle Brown 2x Paralymic Gold Medallist Archer

Danielle Brown’s story is all about breaking barriers, famed as a double Paralympic archery gold medallist. After becoming disabled as a teenager, Danielle realised that even in adversity we have a choice. Choose to let the things outside your control defeat you or choose to control your response to it. It was this mindset that saw Danielle ranked World No.1 for her entire career. A five-time World Champion, Danielle also won gold at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 in an able-bodied discipline, showing her skill and focus is enough to beat even the best ablebodied athletes.

Proving her credentials away from competition, Danielle attained a first-class law degree whilst competing at a world-class level, a truly amazing achievement. Danielle continues to research the Champion mindset and has published a number of children’s books, including 100 Reasons To Hope, curated on behalf of Captain Sir Tom Moore. Her latest book, Run Like A Girl won the Sunday Times Children’s Sports Book of the Year 2022.

Club of the Year

Barbell Basketball

Cricket Cross Country Men’s Football Taekwondo Volleyball

Barbell

Basketball

Barbell had an outstanding year, boosting active membership by 113% (from 46 in 2022 to 98 in 2023), organising their first official nationally sanctioned powerlifting competition, and participating in the Imperial Varsity. The committee’s efforts significantly enhanced the society’s enjoyment and engagement.

The Basketball Club had a stellar year, exceeding their membership goal by selling 180 memberships, up from a target of 120. They earned Female and Beginner Friendly Badges from IA, and saw strong team performances: the LUSL Women’s team finished second in the Cup and third in the league, the Women’s BUCS Tier 1 team placed second, and the Men’s Tier 5 team won their league, advancing to Tier 4. Additionally, the men’s teams excelled in the LUSL Cup 2024, with the Men’s 1 team securing second place in their league. The club also promoted women’s basketball through the “Move Her Way” campaign, offering a free taster session for all Imperial girls.

Cricket

Cross Country & Athletics

The Cricket Club had a tremendous year, reaching a record 130 members and featuring notable additions of high-performance England County and Indian State players. They fielded four BUCS teams, three LUSL teams, and the Club XI. The Men’s 1st XI achieved back-to-back BUCS promotions, winning all five games to move up to BUCS Division 1 and reaching the National BUCS Indoor Finals. The Women’s 1st XI won the London Unis Indoor League for the second consecutive year and prepared for their BUCS Division 1 debut. They also triumphed in the LSE Varsity (2-1) and Imperial Varsity (4-0), marking unprecedented success and strong camaraderie within the club.

The Cross Country and Athletics Club has doubled in size since last year, now holding events six days a week. They earned the IA Beginner Friendly Badge for promoting new participation. Notably, they competed in the Imperial Varsity for the first time, broadening their reach within the community. Additionally, they organized fantastic trips throughout the year.

Men’s Football

Taekwondo

The Men’s Football Club had its most positive season recently, focusing on beginner development, high-performing teams, and a robust social calendar. They raised over £1500 for charity through varsity events and November contributions. The club organized a comprehensive preseason, including friendlies against universities like Cambridge. On the pitch, the top four teams achieved win rates above 50%. They also boosted their social media presence by over 50%, reaching over 1000 followers and regularly sharing updates and highlights. The community spirit and beginner participation were exemplified by a football fresher and complete beginner winning the annual Bola Bola trophy, becoming a prestigious member of the club and showcasing their welcoming environment both on and off the pitch.

Taekwondo excelled this year, achieving new heights and fostering a supportive community. At the BUCS Championships, the club placed 2nd in the BSTF Team Champions Series, their highest ranking since 2018, with 34 medals (up from 23 last year), including 6 golds. They introduced weekly Poomsae training, enhancing skills across all belt levels. For the first time, they participated in the Imperial Varsity, offering a safe environment for new members to try full-contact sparring. The club’s tight-knit community includes a strong alumni network spanning over 10 years, supporting both beginners and elite athletes.

Volleyball

Volleyball had a tremendous year, winning the UK Student Cup for the first time by defeating UCL and headlining their first Imperial Varsity with thrilling matches that drew large crowds. The women’s team topped Division 1, likely earning promotion to the Premier League, while the men’s team competed in the BUCS Premier League. They created a strong community, organizing the Deep Dish tour for beach volleyball and participating in the Portsmouth Movember Charity tournament for intermediate players. The club’s dedicated coaching staff provided weekly development plans and inclusive recreational sessions. They also earned two IA Badges for female participation and beginner friendliness.
