Bill and Tonya Loucks spent a long time searching for the perfect piece of land where they would build their forever home. They wanted space, but to be in town. They also knew they didn’t want to build a brick home, which is a requirement of many developments in town. One day when Tonya was feeling under the weather and not in the mood to lot shop, they stumbled upon this property. There was a sign in the yard, so they called and the next day they were signing a contract on the hood of a truck! The development had large lots and the developers were fine with their brick-free plans. When it came time to build, they reached out to Ray Green, the father of one of their son’s baseball teammates. All those hours on the bleachers over the years had formed some rapport between the families and a plan was forged. Ray’s wife, Regina, a designer from Scruggs Lumber and Julie Bolinger of Winding Roads Interiors helped with much of the planning. The Loucks had done their research when it came to the planning and design phase. Over a period of four years, the couple frequented model homes, open houses and home building magazines for inspiration to determine the perfect 2,600 square foot layout. While the Loucks knew their style preferences – farmhouse look, with a variation of woods and neutral colors - Tonya asked her design team to push them outside that comfort zone a bit. At the end of the day, the Loucks wanted a beautiful space that was both functional for daily living and inviting for their guests. That’s exactly what they received. The exterior entry of this home is incredibly welcoming and warm. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

There is stamped, stained concrete in a wood-look pattern that helps tie the rough-hewn wood columns into the design of the rest of the home. The gable arch above the front porch flows into the home, adorning the entry way, dining room and the backside of the home, above the patio. The dark wood beams carry throughout the home as well. From the beams, huge modern ceiling fans efficiently circulate air around the large, open main living space. The floor that Bill and Tonya chose to use through most of the main level is a warm, wide plank that mirrors the beams on the ceiling.
Bill works from home and has his office at the front of the house. A sliding barn door provides privacy in the most stylish way. From his desk he has a view out the front of the house, with a window that floods the room with natural light. While the walls are a cool grey with white board and batten, the décor is all warm and rustic. Maps of the world and wine racks that double as bookshelves adorn the walls, giving the space sophistication and personality. The combination makes for a comfortable and warm working environment.

The kitchen of the home is open to the living area and they have most tastefully decorated with neutral tones in many textures. The island, housing the stainless-steel apron front sink and dishwasher, is a calming grey-green shade with gorgeous, contoured legs on the bar side. The backsplash is tiled in a fun pattern that fits current trends while sure to hold the test of time. The cabinets are finished with simple, modern hardware and are topped with long expanses of solid surface countertops white around the perimeter of the kitchen and black on the island. The wooden-backed barstools at the island bring warmth and play up the modern farmhouse design.

If you ask anyone in your local skilled trades profession about their business, a frequent response is, “Business is great! My only problem is I can’t find skilled workers in my industry.” The response is consistent throughout the construction industry (builders, electricians, plumbers, welders, landscapers, etc.) in both the residential and commercial sectors. With a common goal in mind, the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Central Missouri and
the Association of General Contractors of Missouri (AGCMO) teamed up to host the first ever Build My Future event in central Missouri on October 20, 2021. Having success in Springfield, Des Moines, and other locations, the Build My Future event was designed to allow trade professionals to demonstrate what makes their trade unique and exciting to young men and women that are preparing to graduate from high school. The October 20th event at Jaycee Fair Grounds was no exception. With over 800 students from all around central Missouri in attendance, the inaugural event was very successful! Students were able to get hands on experience with heavy equipment, finish work, concrete stamping, welding, robotics, and carpentry, to name a few. The range of possibilities for a successful career in the trades industry, what has become an unorthodox path, was made clearer for every student in attendance. The students eagerly went from booth to booth, climbing makeshift roofs, using a track hoe to knock tennis balls off traffic cones, stamping sand to simulate concrete, building structures, welding, transplanting plants, and operating heavy machinery. The experiences gained through this event are something these young people will carry with them for years to come.

For some, the perfect family lake house retreat is as simple as finding a home, buying it, and decorating it to their tastes. For the homeowners in this feature, it wasn’t that simple. Purchased in 2008, the 3,600 square foot home underwent two expansive remodels to get it where it is today. The couple had the lake view they dreamt of, now they needed to design the home to make the perfect lake retreat. They chose HBA builder Brice Bernskoetter with Bernskoetter Construction and Paulette Kreter with Paulette Designs to help with the plans. If there is one lesson to come out of the complete reworking of this home, it’s that having a plan, and being flexible when needing to adjust this plan, is essential to getting what you want. The homeowners had big (and sometimes bold) ideas of what they wanted, and they acknowledge that the awesome team of builders and suppliers made this couple’s diverging visions a reality. While one spouse is more traditional and formal, the other prefers a medieval style and color scheme. At the end of the day, both their tastes were considered, and compromises were made within each space. Typically, we start a feature with the interior of the home, but in this case, it’s the exterior that provides that “wow” factor so many are after. The curb appeal, for this lake home, is best seen by boat. The castle-like retaining wall certainly appeals to our homeowner with medieval tastes. The contrasting stone and mulched flower beds provide a frame along the water’s edge. 42

A well-designed, multi-stoned golf cart path is both classy and practical, providing accessibility to the dock from the home. The dock itself is an amazing 3,000 square feet and holds three boats and four wave runners with hammocks and seating for a small army. Stockman Stoneworks was integral in the entire process – from design to install – to create this amazing outdoor landscape. The quality of their work is apparent from every angle. In fact, the castle-like rock on the exterior of the home is a Stockman Stoneworks exclusive. The meticulous work of Winge Masonry was also vital to the success of this extensive outdoor project. Beyond the retaining wall, a dreamlike oasis exists. The centerpiece, a bean-shaped gunite swimming pool, was designed for all seasons and is a true entertaining mecca. There is plenty of seating inside and along the pool’s edge and an inset hot tub for cooler evenings. The theme-based lighting accents within the pool are functional but also quite the conversation piece. The beautiful stone patio features a masonry fireplace on one side and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen on the other. The built-in brick pizza oven and fun water features in the pool make this the favorite space of the couple’s four children. Looking up at the sweeping windows above the patio, an ornate metal railing with palm tree details adds some tasteful character to the surroundings and was designed by the homeowners themselves. While there is easy access to a couple of bedrooms and the downstairs living area right from the patio, a gardenlike stone and brick pathway leads you around the home to the front entrance.

The perfect metal light fixture draws your eyes up to the ceiling where the elaborate outer space mural by a local painter, Lauri Fleeman, captures your attention. Lots to Love… at the Luebberings
Jon and Kimberly Luebbering decided that it was time to build their ‘forever’ home for their growing family in a place that held special meaning. There was no question that the 3-acre piece of land where Kimberly grew up was the perfect spot for their endeavor.
While the location was perfect, the timing was less than ideal. Building during a global pandemic isn’t an easy task. The couple faced back ordered materials, out of stock appliances and skyrocketing lumber prices, but they stayed flexible and remained patient as
they knew the end result would be well worth the wait! Kimberly’s desire was for the house to be flooded with natural light and to have family photos prominently displayed throughout the home. Speaking of family, CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

Jon’s dad has a background in construction and helped them with many aspects of the build. Being electricians by trade, all the electrical work was done by Jon and Kimberly’s dad themselves. Having family involved in the homebuilding process made the final product that much more special. Dean Holtmeyer was chosen as their builder on a recommendation of family and friends, and they were quite happy with this decision. The couple appreciated how honest he was with supply chain issues and how conscientious he was about expenses, finding the best price possible. Seemingly small acts like this gave the Luebberings a lot of respect for Dean and his team. As you near the home, you’re immediately struck by the contrast of the beautiful white brick home surrounded by rolling green fields and trees as far as the eye can see. There’s a lot of room for their little girls to run around and enjoy the very same land that their mom played on as a child. Entering the home, the large windows, glass doors and open spaces do their job well - keeping the living area flooded with natural light from all directions. The light, neutral wall colors allow the light to bounce around to all surfaces.

In the open kitchen, the gorgeous brick backsplash is visually appealing while providing a comforting space. Originally, this was the brick that Kimberly wanted to use on the home’s exterior, but at more than twice the price of other options, it just wasn’t a feasible choice. A little creative thinking, and a compromise was struck. The front and back of the brick was cut off to make the lovely backsplash in the kitchen and the hall tree. The depth, texture and subtle pop of color is a unique and beautiful touch. They’ll be telling the story of the brick bargaining for many years to come.

One feature of this home that stood out was the appliances in the kitchen. In a time where stainless steel is everywhere, they chose crisp white and rose gold appliances that were worth the months long wait for arrival and installation. They complement the light cabinets and countertops and keep your eyes moving around the kitchen. The custom cabinetry in this home holds so many thoughtful details. One such detail is the recessed paper towel nook. With little hands everywhere, they never have to worry about paper towels being knocked over and unrolled. The contrasting bluegrey color of the island provides a little bit of cool coloring without overpowering the space.

keepsake that can be passed down to future generations. Throughout much of the main level, the couple chose a neutral, medium toned hardwood. The gas fireplace in the living room is wrapped in floor to ceiling stone and is adorned with a thick
wooden mantle. Exposed beams in the living area mirror the tones of the floor and help to tie the open concept together. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… at the Jordan household. Their lovely rancher is tastefully decorated, inside and out, for this most joyous time of year. The outdoor entryway is adorned with green garland and red accents. At night, string lights outline the rooftop, and a lighted wreath is centered on the stone gable. An outdoor Christmas tree and shrubbery are lit brightly amongst the wellgroomed landscaping – spreading holiday cheer to passersby. Inside, Jackie puts on Bailey’s Christmas sweater featuring Rudolph and finds her a red bow for the occasion. Bailey is the family dog, of course. 96

Since the Jordans are empty nesters, with daughter and son out on their own with their families and careers, Mark and Jackie decided to build a home with main level living and plenty of room for visitors. This ended up being
a logistics blessing, as their new home was built just next door to their prior residence. For the Jordans, deciding on a contractor was easy – Kent Bentage had built the last home and would build this one too. Mark shares
that the design of the home, which was his own, provides for wide hallways and a practical layout, allowing the couple to age in place. Paulette Kreter used Mark’s design to create the plans, making the home a reality. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

The Jefferson City natives come from a family of talented craftsmen and women which is evident in each and every room of this home. The living room right off the foyer is a welcoming space with vaulted ceilings and large pine beams soaring above the cozy furniture and cheerful Christmas tree. from their childhood but has a bit of modern flair. Her dad made the nativity scene on built-ins next to the lovely stone fireplace. Mark mentions the efficiency of the fireplace, making it both a practical and attractive focal point. Before moving onto the kitchen, we need to credit Jackie for her
efforts in creating the perfect ‘weathered’ look for the three large beams overhead. Thanks to Pinterest and a toolbox filled with hatchets, chains, hammers and the right color stain, she managed to create that aged, farmhouse effect while simultaneously relieving stress. Brilliant.

The kitchen is lovely – open to the living room and outfitted in warm tones complemented by the dark prefinished solid oak flooring. Jackie came up with the color scheme of the home including that of the kitchen cabinets. She found the color she wanted in a magazine (similar to this one, perhaps) and attempted to have it replicated. Because it was a specific shade, she had to go to a paint company and have them match it for the cabinets. The color was coined as, crème liqueur with a van dyke brown glaze. The rope-like inserts add a bit of ornate detail to the cabinetry which are complimented with gorgeous granite countertops and a shimmery backsplash, installed by Mark.

The house has a consistent modern-rustic feel. This is especially evident in the lighting. The light above kitchen island was Mark’s own handiwork and suits the space perfectly. He had collected all the pieces and parts and was able to put it together himself – saving costs and getting a homemade conversation piece in exchange. The interior doors maintain the rustic look and have a bit of farmhouse spirit with an old-world casing. The hallway features lighted nooks, perfect for displaying vases and art. The first thing you notice as you walk into the master bedroom is the unique diamond-shaped raised ceiling, another one of Jackie’s design ideas. Where the other bedrooms are more about the families’ history and furniture pieces handed down for generations, the master bedroom is a bit more modern. The master bath is outfitted with heated tile that looks like wood, a television, a perfectly tiled walk-in shower with plenty of space for two.

The basement adds tons of space for socializing with friends and family over the holidays and throughout the year. A colorful back drop to the bar area was another of Mark’s creations and resembles stained glass, adding vibrant light to the space. The modern gas fireplace welcomes you to another living area which overlooks a windowed multi-functional space. A playful sign hangs over the entry to the movie room – a fun environment with oversized bean bags and a large screen for watching those Christmas favorites. The stamped concrete flooring is perfect for rowdy grandkids and ping pong matches. Be careful though – there are still plenty of fragile pieces that serve as loving, momentous reminders of generations past.
