Editor´s Words

Spending quality time with your family proves to be very challenging for most people in today’s connected society. Even though we want to provide a good life for the people we love, we often focus too much on work, resulting in not having the quality time to enjoy family. It is all very ironic, since working long hours keeps you away from your family; the very people that you’re working so hard to provide for. It’s a vicious circle when you are the provider and strive for a work/play blend! But what happens when you are the parent that stays at home? Are you spending and giving YOUR BEST time to your kids? Or you are so engaged in keeping up with household chores, watching TV, spending lots of time involved in various sports/after school activities that you miss out on the real quality family time. The pace of modern life can too often mean that spending time together is the exception, rather than the rule. With the summer holidays around the corner, we’d urge families to see it as a time to re-establish bonds and create some really precious memories.

The “Knee by Knee” Examination The Best Way to Start Your Child’s Dental Health Our office is designed to be your Child’s “First Dental Home.” We recommend the prevention of tooth decay by scheduling an appointment as early as six months of your child’s age. Help us make your child’s first visit to the pediatric dentist enjoyable by omitting words like “needle,” “shot,” “pull, “drill,” or “hurt.” We will make use of other terms and words with the same message, yet playful! If your child is under three years of age, we will have a “knee by knee” examination, which is a convenient and safe way to accomplish the physical examination. The parent is instructed to sit sideways in the dental chair facing the dentist, who sits in the operator chair knee-by-knee with the parent. The c h i l d is positioned on the parent’s lap facing the parent, with one leg wrapped around each side of the parent. This allows the parent to use his or her elbows to restrain the child’s legs while having the hands available to hold the child’s hands. When the child is facing the parent, the examination reassures them that the position is expected and normal. The pediatric dentist and the parent can start an early guidance for the first erupted teeth, tooth decay prevention, and the start of oral

health habits. We recommend appointments every three months until your child turns three years of age or unless otherwise indicated. Even if no teeth have yet erupted, we can show parents how to clean the gum pad to prevent any infection when their children start teething. A visit to the pediatric dentist can also help detect not only tooth decay but also oral manifestation of a local or systemic disease at an early age and work in coordination with the patient’s pediatrician to treat them early. If your child is over the age of three, we will take the necessary x-rays to not only detect early tooth decay, but also to monitor the eruption of their teeth, any missing or supernumerary teeth (the so called ‘extra teeth”), to determine the need of early orthodontic intervention to prevent further malocclusion. This first visit will allow the child to b e c o m e more familiar with the dentist so that eventually, there will be less fear and anxiety in future visits. Remember today’s pediatric dentistry is about prevention!

HUMAN BODY FUN FACTS BRAIN

The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb. The cartoon image of a light bulb over your head when a great thought occurs is fairly correct. Your brain generates as much energy as a small light bulb even when you’re sleeping. The brain is much more active at night than during the day. Logically, you would think that it would take a lot more brain power to function during the day as opposed to at night. Turns out, the opposite is true. When you turn off, your brain turns on.

BODILY

NS FUNCTIO

Women blink twice as many times as men do. That’s a lot of blinking every day. The average person, man or woman, blinks about 13 times a minute During your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two swimming pools. Saliva plays an important part in beginning the digestive process and keeping the mouth lubricated.

DISEASES RY AND INJU Over 90% of diseases are caused or complicated by stress. Stress not only wears you down each day, but it could also be increasing your chances of having a variety of serious medical conditions like depression, high blood pressure and heart disease.

MUS CLES AND BONES We are about 1 cm taller in the morning than in the evening. The cartilage between our bones gets compressed by standing, sitting and other daily activities as the day goes on, making us just a little shorter at the end of the day than at the beginning.

Should you punish your child?

by Munir Shivji

Are you aware that instilling fear in children serves no purpose and creates feelings of shame and humiliation? Fear has been shown to lead to an increased risk of future antisocial behavior including crime and substance abuse. Studies also show that spanking and other physical discipline techniques can create ongoing behavioral and emotional problems. Harsh, physical discipline teaches children that violence is the only way to solve problems. Controlling or manipulating discipline compromises trust between parent and child, and harms the attachment bond. Positive Discipline is a program designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities. Based on the best selling Positive Discipline books by Dr. Jane Nelson, it teaches important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults. Basic Tips: • Allow natural consequences • Offer choices • Be sensitive to strong emotions • Use logical consequences sparingly and with compassion • Maintain a positive relationship • Use empathy and respect • Work out a solution together • Be proactive • Understand the child’s developmental abilities • State facts rather than making demands 10 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

• Effective communication and problem solving skills • Discipline that teachers (and is neither permissive nor punitive) • Focus on a solution instead of a punishment • Encouragement (instead of praise) The Innovative School in West Houston will offer a complimentary Parenting the Positive Discipline Way workshop for parents with children ages birth - six years on June 21, 2014 from 9:00 am - 12:00pm. This class is designed to help parents relate more effectively to their children. Parents will learn the techniques, tools and keys needed to develop a solution based discipline method. The session will be lead by Kathryn Miller. Kathryn is an instructor at the Houston Montessori Center for Teachers and The Institute of Montessori Education focusing on Early Childhood Montessori education. She is a frequent workshop presenter both locally and nationally for the American Montessori Society. Visit www.theinnovativeschool.com for more information and to RSVP. Munir Shivji is Head of The Innovative School. He holds a MACTE accredited Early Childhood AMS Montessori credential and an AMS Montessori Administrative credential from the Center for Montessori Education in New York. Currently, Munir is as a Professional Director on the board of the American Montessori Society.

Healthier diets A report from The University of Michigan examined the most comprehensive survey done on this topic. This report revolved around the idea of how American children spent their time between 1981 and 1997 as opposed to today. Researchers discovered that the amount of time children spent eating meals at home was the single biggest predictor of better academic achievement and fewer behavioral problems. Mealtime was more influential than time spent in school, studying, attending religious services, or playing sports. Doesn’t work for your family’s schedule?

Controlling the Costs of Home Ownership

By: Sherry Campbell Broker Owner of Energy Realty

The tax authorities can legally increase your homesteaded property values 10% annually, so if you are not diligent in monitoring this, before you know it, your tax values are higher than what you could sell your home for! Homes increase in value on average of 4%-6% in West Houston, so you can see where this could get out of control. Texas is one of the most affordable states to purchase a home, but there are other costs associated with home ownership that can get out of control if you do not monitor it every year (and I am not referring to home maintenance).

You have many options for protesting your taxes, ranging from doing it yourself in person or online, to hiring a property tax consultant that will only charge you if they are successful in reducing your values. The fee is generally 50% of the money saved.

Besides our mortgage, the other two large costs are property taxes and property insurance. Since we do not pay state income tax in Texas, the state gets a big part of their revenue from property taxes, which ranges from a low of 2.5% to 4% of the value in some neighborhoods. While we cannot control the percentage, we can control the value to some degree.

Property insurance is another big expense that you should monitor regularly. Insurance companies are in the business to make money, and when they experience high claims in a specific zip code, they distribute that loss back to the homeowner through increased premiums.

Recently I have heard a big misconception that the tax appraisal represents the value of what a house should be sold for, and that is entirely wrong. Homeowners that are diligent in keeping their tax values low, will see a huge difference in the tax appraisal, verses what an appraiser hired to determine value for a bank loan will come up with. The goal is to always keep our tax appraisal lower than what you can sell your home for! Most tax appraisals or home valuations are mailed in April, and homeowners have until May 31 to file a protest either online or by regular mail. Please be warned that this is like the IRS, if the form is not postmarked by May 31, it will be denied automatically For more information on procedures, please see http://www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxforms/50-195.pdf. 18 16 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

Most homeowners pay their insurance through an escrow account held by the mortgage company, so this is easily overlooked. The mortgage company always sends a notice of an increased escrow fee if the taxes or insurance increase, but most homeowners don’t pay close attention to this. What seems like a small monthly amount could be substantial for the year. If your insurance premium goes up, we advise that you get quotes from other insurance companies. You will be surprised at the savings you could find here! As a small Real Estate firm in the Energy Corridor, it is our goal at Energy Realty to continue to educate the public on home ownership.
